By Celeste Lodewyk Renwick Community Memorial Hall committee members have vowed to “fight to the end” to prevent the hall’s ownership being transferred to the Renwick School. Last Tuesday a heated public meeting was held between Renwick residents and members of the Renwick Community Memorial Hall committee to address the hall’s ownership. The intention was for members of the public to

vote on the transfer of the hall’s ownership from the community to the Ministry of Education, to be administered by the Renwick School Board of Trustees. The motion was put forward by Renwick business owner and member of the Renwick Residents’ Association Anthony van de Water. Mr van de Water said the future of the hall lay with the school, and described the transfer as a “no-brainer”.

“This hall is a wonderful asset to the community but where I stand I can see its demise. “Over the past 27 years there have been no improvements made to it, just maintenance which has been done as required. “As far as I can see there is no or very little income (likely) from hall bookings in the future, whereas the school has the funds available to maintain it to a higher standard,” Mr van de Water said. The historic Kingston Flyer steam train is set to be operating again by October, after Marlborough vineyard owner David Bryce agreed to buy the train last week. The tourist service, which operates in and around Queenstown, had faced an uncertain future after previous operator Kingston Acquisitions Ltd went into receivership in November 2009. Mr Bryce has agreed to buy two steam locomotives, the vintage carriages, storage sheds, the Kingston Tavern (which closed soon after the service ceased) a 14km section of track to Fairlight, six residential lots, and other development land in the village, totalling about 80 hectares.

Trespass order ‘breach of civil rights’ By Damian George A Blenheim man says trespassing orders handed to him by the Marlborough District Council and Blenheim Police are a breach of his civil rights, and “just cannot fathom” what led to them being issued. Anthony Hanna, unemployed, has been banned from setting foot on council grounds for two years, and was issued a trespass order from police which has since been dropped. The penalties, as well as a third trespass order prohibiting him from the Maataa Waka animal control grounds, came after Mr Hanna tried to discuss the “unlawful” holding of his dog following its impoundment for being

off property. Mr Hanna says he should not have had to pay the $180 to have the dog released, as the matter was not yet before the courts. He says his initial meeting with council staff last Monday was good-natured, and the trespass order came as a major shock to him. “I didn’t swear, it wasn’t heated – I just can’t fathom why I’ve been given a trespassing order,” he says. “I own a house, I’m a ratepayer – I basically pay [council staff’s] wages. “Why am I being treated like I’m a criminal?” Following a meeting with council staff and CEO Andrew Besley which

anthony Hanna displays the trespass orders handed to him by the Marlborough District council and the Maataa Waka animal control company.

left the impoundment issue unresolved, Mr Haana decided to take the matter to police. However, police refused to accept his complaint, before telling him to leave and that he would be issued with a trespass order if he returned. He returned anyway, was arrested, and later issued with the trespass orders. “It’s against my civil rights – I thought I had a right to make a complaint,” he says.

He says he was told to call the council on Friday to discuss the matter, but tried three times without luck. MDC compliance manager Garth Congdon was unavailable for comment yesterday and on Monday. Blenheim Police say they cannot comment on Mr Hanna’s arrest, as the matter was now before the courts. Mr Hanna is due to appear in Blenheim District Court on September 5 to answer a charge of wilful trespass.

Renwick hall ‘vote’ divides community Continued from Page 1. During the meeting a number of residents, including outspoken hall committee member Rata Harper, claimed that according to the Deed of Constitution of the Renwick Community Memorial Hall the vote could not legally take place. Instead an “indication of hands” was shown with 42 in favour and 19 against. The motion was deemed null and void and the meeting was closed without a decision being made. A hall committee meeting took place on Monday to help determine what

What others have to say: Brian Roughan, Renwick School Board of Trustees Chairman:

“The hall should not go into private hands. The meeting held was undemocratic and only represented two thirds of the Renwick community and the hall’s ownership should not be decided by a show of hands, but rather by a referendum by the rate payers of Renwick. “I was born and bred in Renwick, lived here for 42 years and was heavily involved in raising funds for the hall’s build. As far as I am

concerned this hall is not here for the taking, never has and never will be. Rata Harper, Renwick business owner and Hall Committee member:

“I have sought legal advice and will fight this to the end. “According to the hall’s Deed which was created in 1984, the School has use of the hall and it’s available for community events and the RSA. Why change something that is not broken? “If it transitions to the school then the community’s entitlements will be reduced over time and the Renwick community will be at risk of losing a significant asset. And to do so would be disrespectful to those who in the past went to so much effort fundraising to build this hall. “The hall was paid for within 12 months of being built and currently we have over $16,000 in the bank, so we are not broke.” To share your thoughts on this issue, contact Celeste Lodewyk by phoning 03 5777868 or email celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz

Devine’s lawyers seek compensation By Damian George The lawyers of salon owner Arthur Devine say they will be seeking compensation from his landlord following Mr Devine’s wrongful eviction from his Blenheim building. Staff and customers turned up to Arthur Devine Inspired Salons and Spa on August 5 to find the salon was closed after landlord William Yates cancelled the proprietor’s lease. Mr Devine owed Mr Yates “a good four-figure amount” in rent arrears, but an error at Mr Yates’ former law firm, Hardy Jones Clark, meant Mr Devine’s payment of that money was not picked up. Figure including GST close to $140,000

Blenheim-born Ian Wedde was recently announced as New Zealand’s new poet laureate, taking over the role from Bluff poet Cilla McQueen. Mr Wedde will receive $80,000 of public funding during his two-year tenure. He is expected to produce a publication of the work written during the period and to publicly advocate for and present poetry.

By Damian George The Marlborough District Council has received a bill of more than $120,000 for the recently-completed review into allegations of wrongdoings within the organisation. The council was given an invoice for $120,454, excluding GST, by special counsel Denis Sheard, who carried out the independent review, on Monday. Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman estimated in a public meeting following the report’s findings last month that the review would likely cost “well in excess of $100,000”, a prediction which was on the money. “We have received a detailed report showing there was no foundation to the allegations of corruption,” Mr Sowman said in a statement on Monday. “The report dismisses the corruption claims and validates the council contract documentation and I think we can now all move on. Marlborough saving energy Nearly 1000 homes across Marlborough have now been equipped with more energy efficient heating systems, government statistics show. The latest figures show 944 homes in the region have now been ‘retrofitted’, with 499 of those coming in the last 12 months. The increase is a result of the government’s Warm Up New

Zealand: Heat Smart initiative, which began in 2008, and offers subsidies for insulation and heat pump installation nationwide. Kaikoura Electorate MP Colin King says the figures are encouraging for the region. “At this time of year, it’s particularly important that our homes are warm, dry and healthy,” he says.

More than 114,000 homes have now been retrofitted across New Zealand. Anyone who has a home built before 2000 is eligible to receive a 33 per cent subsidy, capped at $1300. People with a community services card can get 60 per cent off the cost of installation.

Mayor’s award just the beginning for graduate By Damian George Look out for the name Gurjeet Singh. The Marlborough horticulturalist says there is “more to come” in his budding career following his graduation from the New Zealand Horticulture Training Organisation recently. Mr Singh is one of the local graduates set to receive an award from Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman at this year’s Marlborough Regional Industry Training Graduation Ceremony on Saturday. Opening up about cancer The answer to beating cancer is accepting it and talking about it, according to cancer survivor Sally Miller and husband Alan. Sun reporter Damian George talks to the couple about their journey through the illness.

Sally and Alan Miller are looking forward to a brighter future as Sally continues her encouraging recovery from Lymphoma, a form of cancer.

Sally and Alan Miller have a simple message for anyone who is going through a battle with cancer: don’t do it alone. The couple went through a “harrowing” time in the early stages after Sally was diagnosed with a form of Lymphoma cancer about 12 months ago - from which she is nearing a full recovery. But from the couple’s journey came an unlikely positive story, in the form of unbreakable new friendships forged through the cancer society. Though their scheduled meetings have now ended, the group of about 20 cancer survivors and their partners have decided to still meet regularly off their own back. It is this support, Alan says, which helped he and Sally through one of the toughest periods of their lives. “Suddenly, out of the blue being diagnosed with cancer, it’s a harrowing experience to go through, it really is,” Alan says.

“But being with these people and learning about their problems and helping to support them, that’s the great thing.” Sally says the group have forged a bond which will be the answer for one of them should their health take a downward turn. “When the need arises, this group will rally, no matter what the circumstances are,” she says. The group’s journey started a year ago, when Sally was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin follicular lymphoma, following a visit to the doctor prompted by bowel and stomach pains. Her doctor noticed the medication she had been taking for depression had caused her kidney function to deteriorate, and referred her to a specialist. From there, a tumour measuring 140mm in length and 80mm in depth (Alan says roughly the size of a mini rugby ball) was discovered in Sally’s abdomen. Alan says the tumour was pushing against Sally’s intestine, causing the pain. “We learned about all of this - the background to what the doctors were doing - from the cancer society,” he says. “They are so efficient with all of the information and physical and emotional support they can give, and taking the ‘nasties’ out of it.” The couple were invited to attend a six-week programme at the cancer society following Sally’s diagnosis, which Sally describes as a “guided tour through the journey of cancer”. She underwent chemotherapy to treat the tumour at Wairau Hospital, but it was only when it was suggested by an oncology doctor that Sally considered radiotherapy. For that, she went to Wellington Hospital, where she was treated once a day for 12 days over a twoand-a-half-week period. Though it helped to further reduce the tumour, the treatment took its toll on her mentally, Sally says. “I stood there and felt quite lost [after the treatment]. “I felt like my reaction to the radiotherapy...it was becoming part of my nature. “But I think I needed to go through that experience and feel unwell to discover that I still had some work to do, and to realise the difficulties other people are going through.” The tumour is now only the size of a golf ball, and Alan and Sally are now looking forward to enjoying a much smoother road ahead. Sally has this message for anyone who may have to go through what she has. “The answer to cancer is accepting it, taking all of the advice you can, and taking what you need for yourself. “It’s not a journey you do on your own; it’s important to have someone at your side.” Sally will have a check-up with a radiologist in six weeks and, from there, “the sky’s the limit”.

Sun readers have their say... Q: People seem to be more accepting of crime these days. Are you?

It’s becoming more common and you don’t seem to flinch as much, and I’m not suprised. But it’s still wrong.

The law seems to be protecting the rights of the criminals nowdays and there seems to be very little respect for the Law in this community.

The younger people seem to be more accepting of crime, more so than the older people.

Not so much accepting, but feeling overwhelmed by it all.

No, because people are still committing the same amount of crimes and nothing different seems to be done about it.

No, it’s not right. People work hard to get what they have got.

Renwick Community Memorial Hall Meeting Dear Ed, It was gratifying to see so many people attend the meeting on Tuesday night which resulted in a good majority, once again , voting in favour of proceeding with the proposed transfer of ownership to the Ministry of Education. If the transfer is successful the building will be fully funded and maintained to a much higher standard out into the future. The passage of time and the changing social and recreational needs of our community have resulting in a hugely reduced usage of the Hall and the financial structure of the present

administration coming under threat. The Hall at present requires considerable upgrading and maintenance, the cost of which would far exceed the present funds held. Many of us have worked tirelessly for the Hall over the past years and it would be nice to be able to maintain the status quo, but we cannot let emotion and living in the past stand in the way of a bright and well maintained future for our wonderful Hall building, and that is with our School and the citizens of tomorrow – our children. Helen Miller Renwick

No right to give hall away Dear Editor, With regard to your notice in The Sun [August 10] concerning the Renwick Community Hall: a number of people, a committee and council had absolutely NO RIGHT, legally or morally, to give away this property, which rightfully

belongs to 45,000 Marlburians. Charge the Education Department rent to cover maintenance and upkeep or, alternatively, let them do all that, including all expenses. Ken Lawrence, Secretary, Marlborough Concerned Citizens

Dear Ed, I have criticised and praised the council over many years. In the 25 years I have lived here I have never read so much criticism as in the last five years.

In my opinion it started when the council pledged $5 million to the theatre that should have paid for the Grovetown sewerage system. Yours sincerely Grandpa

Daffodil Day Friday August 26 – where bright smiles and beautiful daffodil flowers grace the streets as Cancer Society volunteers venture out to sell daffodils and collect donations for the annual fundraiser. More than $70,000 was raised in Marlborough last year and Cancer Society Marlborough staff and volunteers are looking forward to another successful Daffodil Day. As well as providing an opportunity to raise awareness of cancer in New Zealand, Daffodil Day is a major funding source for the Cancer Society. All donations received in Marlborough stays in Marlborough and goes towards providing a wide range of support services, information, health promotion, awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected by cancer. Whether it’s buying daffodils, donating to street collectors or purchasing Daffodil Day merchandise, every gift counts. But any donation, no matter how large

Friday 26 august 2011

or small, will make a difference in the life of someone living with cancer.

Cuddly and cute Milly Bears on sale Cuddly, cute and a great gift idea the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day Bear is on sale again, and this year the bear’s name is Milly. Last year 250 bears were Cancer Society Marlborough volunteer co-coordinator ordered for Marlborough Margaret Tepania with the Daffodil Day Bears being sold but because of its popularity, in support of Daffodil Day. they sold out very quickly. So this year, the Cancer Milly the Daffodil Day Bear retails for Society Marlborough is urging people to $10 and are available at the Cancer Society get in quick before they miss out. “There were a lot of disappointed people Marlborough office, supermarkets, Mitre who missed out on buying a bear last year 10, the Warehouse, the National Bank, the so this year we have ordered more and have Mariners Mall in Picton, Havelock Four them displayed in a variety of places,” says Square Supermarket, Seddon and Renwick SuperValue Supermarkets to name a few. Daffodil Day co-ordinator Hilary Gill.

Cancer Society Marlborough volunteer Pat Dean has personally experienced cancer so understands the importance of the work done by the Society. Many years ago Pat was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer and after surviving she made the decision to become a volunteer. After retiring, Pat followed through with her goal of helping others affected by cancer and became a Cancer Society volunteer three years ago. “The most rewarding part of being a volunteer is being able to help in one way or another, and being available to listen. “Plus I love working with our local team, they are all so friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome,” she smiles. Pat has lived all her life in Marlborough and says becoming a volunteer is worthwhile.

“You don’t have to be directly affected by cancer to be a Cancer Society volunteer, we appreciate anyone wanting to help and will welcome any enquires,” she says. The Cancer Society Marlborough office is located downstairs in The Forum Building in Market Place and is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm. Staff and volunteers are always available to offer support and information to anyone wanting to find out more about cancer. Cancer Society Marlborough is also non government funded so is operated purely on donations, sponsorship and bequests. FRIENDLY FACE: Cancer Society Marlborough volunteer Pat Dean says volunteering is both rewarding and a great confidence builder.

Story of survival

Proud to support Daffodil Day 2011

Hurricaines and Manawatu star player Aaron Cruden is proud to support the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day after surviving testicular cancer. Aaron was diagnosed in 2008 after finding a lump in one of his testicles while showering. He was only 19. Aaron underwent surgery and had the testicle removed but was later told the cancer had spread to his lungs. What followed was a gruelling nine week course of chemotherapy. Afterwards Aaron received the news that he was in full remission and only needs to undergo annual health checks. Cancer affects one in three New Zealanders, but with your help the Cancer Society can continue their valuable work in researching cancer, raising awareness of it in our communities and provide support to those affected. Show your generosity and support Daffodil Day on Friday, August 26.

Enjoy a freshly prepared lunch and live entertainment this Daffodil Day The wonderful team at Marlborough Community College will be preparing a delicious lunch in the Market Place, Blenheim on Friday, August 26. There will be pumpkin soup and bread rolls, sweet and savoury muffins and tasty chicken wraps from 11:30am -2pm. Show your support and enjoy Daffodil Day celebrations in Blenheim and Picton.

The Cancer Society Marlborough receives no government funding and relies on the generosity of the Marlborough community to provide services. Thank you Marlborough for your ongoing financial and volunteer support. Daffodil Day is Friday, the 26th of August, we look forward to seeing you.

Picton one of first to celebrate Daffodil Day Picton resident Betty McKenzie still remembers trundling around Picton’s industrial area pushing a borrowed vegetable trolley laden with daffodil flowers. She was the first to introduce Daffodil Day to Marlborough. Betty’s mother began Daffodil Day in Ragland in the North Island where she raffled a cake and sold daffodil flowers. Betty thought if her mother could do it, so could she.

“I didn’t feel shy about it, I pushed that trolley around and asked anyone around if they wanted to buy a daffodil. There weren’t many who said no,” she laughs. Betty and her husband picked and bunched the daffodils themselves before selling them for a donation, while in Blenheim a “huge” cake was raffled. This soon sparked an interest in the wider community and Daffodil Day in Marlborough began. “People were very supportive from

the beginning and it’s been strongly supported since,” Betty says. Today daffodils are sourced from all over the Sounds areas and are delivered to Picton by quad bike, four wheel drive vehicles and boats. This year alone saw 1000 bulbs planted at the end of Broadway Street in Picton by volunteers and students. At present Picton has more than 70 volunteers and are co-ordinated by Noeline and Trevor Gould.

Daffodil Day lunch Blenheim:

The creative team at Marlborough Community College will be preparing a scrumptious lunch at the Market Place in Blenheim on Daffodil Day. Warm your stomach with delicious pumpkin soup and bread roll, snack on a tasty chicken wrap or tempt your tastebuds with a freshly made sweet or savoury muffin.

The lunch will run from 11:30am to 2pm and will be accompanied by live entertainment.

Picton:

There will be a sausage sizzle being cooked outside the Harcourts building while volunteers sell Daffodils at the Mariners Mall and outside the Dog and Frog Cafe.

Livestock not affected by polar blast The polar blast which has hit most of New Zealand and is expected to continue in coming days will not adversely affect livestock, Federated Farmers of New Zealand says. “As with the front several weeks ago, the MetService gave us plenty of warning to shift vulnerable stock into sheltered paddocks and into yards. “This was accurate and timely and Federated Farmers appreciates the MetService’s work,” Federated Farmers adverse events

spokesperson David Rose says. “The MetService is also forecasting a number of good weather days towards week’s end, so the light is appearing at the end of the tunnel. Mr Rose says the only concern is in areas where snow is a rarity, such as Waikato. He says there are no real issues for livestock in the central North Island, and it is a similar picture in Auckland and Northland. He points out that, while pockets of

lambing are underway in Canterbury, cooler regions of New Zealand or those at elevation will not begin full-scale lambing for several weeks. “Lambs and calves are incredibly robust. Even if it’s cold for us humans, it takes just a few days of settled weather for them to find their feet,” he says. He says farmers entered winter on the back of a “great autumnal period” and are generally well-prepared for whatever winter may throw at them.

Farmers will back milk price inquiry Federated Farmers of New Zealand says it will represent dairy farmers at any milk pricing inquiry, but with separate reviews of raw milk regulations currently being done by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), Treasury, and the Ministry of Economic Development (MED), a new inquiry would be “premature and confusing”. The National party caucus gave the green light to a parliamentary select committee inquiry into milk prices last week.

“Anywhere, anytime, any place, Federated Farmers will put the farmer’s case [forward],” Federated Farmers dairy chairperson Willy Leferink says. “As a taxpayer and a dairy industry participant, I still think it is premature to hold a Commerce Select Committee inquiry into retail milk prices when an interdepartmental review of the Raw Milk regulations is still to report.” Mr Leferink says retail milk prices have

Not all electricians are equal At Callahan and Martella Electrical they pride themselves not only on their ability to be one of the few companies that can competently design and install comprehensive and innovative electrical systems for frost detection and irrigation systems - they also back their service and backup. Neil Callahan’s view is simple: “We need

At the end of the day our aim is to provide a service where the client will go and tell others how good we really were.” Callahan and Martella electrical also have one of the largest staff in Marlborough with a comprehensive 24 hour, 365 day call-out

Megan Gale is one of the world’s most iconic, successful and best known models and personalities. Who better to be the new face of L’Oreal Paris? Born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, Megan was first discovered when she won a modeling competition at age 18. After several years of modeling in Australia, Megan catapulted to international fame when she was cast in a television commercial for Vodafone Italy and was selected as a face of Australia in Italy. Megan has excelled in both the local and international modeling industry for more than 15 years. She has worked

both on the catwalk and in front of the camera, plus has recently embraced new challenges behind the camera also. She has appeared on the cover of countless magazines, including Marie Claire and Australian Women’s Weekly, and has modeled for numerous leading fashion houses both in Australia and abroad. Megan has also long prioritised her work with philanthropic organisations and charitable ventures designed to make the world a better place. This is highlighted through her work with the Australian Red Cross, Kids Help Line and the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Be Bold & Beautiful Come and check out our beautiful range of hats, and brighten up Blenheim this spring!

Drop Earrings

Extremely long drop earrings are also big this year, the longer the better. This is a great chance to really make a fashion statement with your jewellery. Big hoop earrings are really popular but it’s the long earrings that just skim or ‘dust’ along your shoulders that are the hot ticket item right now.

Watches:

If you like to be up to date with what the time is, then one great trend is the thin metal watch in either silver or gold. At the other end of the spectrum, thick cuff watches that you can slide on like a bracelet are also really popular. These are basically a watch embedded in a cuff of fabric and they come in loads of different colours and styles. Bright, bold colors and intricate designs are key ways to wear them, and they’re sure to make your outfit pop.

Necklaces:

Also really big for the coming season are vintage-style pendant necklaces. Large pendants are a great way of adding detail to any outfit, and you can choose from a range of different pendants such as ones made from metal or plastic or even fabric flower pendants attached to a long string of beads for a pretty, feminine look.

Crystals:

One final recommendation for top 2011 jewellery trends are bright, pretty crystals, such as those by Swarovski. Crystals are an eternally popular fashion trend as they’re such a classic design and the intricate detail they entail can go a long way to giving your accessories that added ‘bling’ to help you stand out from the crowd while keeping their classic edge that means they’ll always be popular.

Operation cover up By Damian George Thousands of children in Eastern Europe are about to receive a welcome early Christmas present from a Marlborough community group ahead of the region’s harsh northern winter. The Marlborough branch of the nationwide Operation Cover Up, part of the international Mission Without Borders organisation, was due to ship off a year’s worth of hand-knitted woollen garments on Saturday. St Christopher’s Church Hall, in Redwoodtown, was decked out the impressive haul of well over a thousand blankets, jerseys, hats, scarves, slippers, socks, toys and babywear on Friday and Saturday morning. The items will go to orphanages and poorer families in Ukraine, Romania and Moldova. Programme coordinator Ruth Buckley says she is grateful for the outstanding effort from the Marlborough community this year. “It’s been great, seeing as how we’ve already sent some items to Christchurch after the [February] earthquake as well. It’s very impressive.” She says donations are welcome for freight costs, which are $4 a blanket. Mission Without Borders is a Christian organisation which supports people suffering the effects of poverty or persecution.

By Celeste Lodewyk The weekend’s threatening rain clouds failed to put a damper on rounds three and four of the South Island Moto Trials Championships held in Blenheim on Saturday and Sunday. Marlborough was well represented with five local riders

showcasing their skills against competitors from as far away as Dunedin and Kapiti Coast. The two day event was held on the Leov’s property in Omaka Valley and Simcox Quarry. Local rider Brendon Wadsworth was pleased with the sections and says there

Letter to the editor In response to the articles regarding Kiwibunkhouse Ltd, I beg to differ and think that perhaps backpackers should look at their attitudes. They are not in their own country but are a visitor to New Zealand and should show more respect. This company has proved to be very professional in all aspects and has lived up to the recommendations that I received from many friends prior to leaving London. I received correspondence prior to my arrival and was fully aware of all the conditions. My induction included fully all aspects of the expected timeframe of

was plenty of positive feedback from the visiting competitors. “Saturday’s weather held out for round three, but after the overnight rain, Sunday’s round four was a lot more challenging. But overall all riders were pleased with the sections and I want to extend a big thank you to those who were involved in making this successful,” he says.

Results:

Dave Atwool, fourth in the Clubman Grade. John Mortimer, first in the Clubman Grade. Gareth Wadsworth, second in the Juniors Grade. Brendon Wadsworth, second in the Presidents Grade. Jason Baker, second in the Experts Grade. The final two rounds will be held in Christchurch on September 10 and 11.

Thank you Kiwi Bunk House employment of three months, and the conditions I would be working in. At no time was I forced to commit. In fact, it was made quite clear if I was not happy with the conditions then not to accept, as due to the large contract they had with a vineyard they had to be sure they had committed staff. This company does not get you to pay a deposit of $300. At all times I was paid correctly and the minimum wage, but I acheived well above this. When I was sick I was given home made soup, when homesick, lots of hugs and lots

of postive support. I have earned good money and shall be spending it in Queenstown. Due to working for the three months I now can apply to have my visa extended. If backpackers don’t change their attitudes, they may find future travellers will find it hard to get employment. I have worked hard, earned money to fund my travel, and honoured my contract. I will be recommending this company to all my friends A very grateful employee. Rebecca Sandsmith

First contract for Wheeler >CRICK E T By Damian George Blenheim cricketer Ben Wheeler has been named as one of Central Districts’ 12 contracted players for the upcoming domestic season. The 19-year-old all-rounder, who has secured his first contract, has played 10 first-class matches for the province since his debut in March last year, and was part of the New Zealand A side which took part in the recentlycompleted Emerging Players Tournament in Australia. The left-arm swing bowler is joined on the list by fellow young quicks Doug Bracewell, Bevan Small and Adam Milne, who debuted for New Zealand in a twenty20 match last season.

Tournament a ‘learning curve’ for under-13 side >HoCK E y By Damian George Marlborough under-13 boys hockey coach Greg Payne says his side’s showing in a tournament in Blenheim on the weekend served as a big learning curve for his players. Marlborough went down to 8-2 to Wairarapa, 10-1 to Wellington, and 13-0 to Canterbury in the five-team warm-up tournament for October’s national competition in Masterton. “It was the first time the boys have really been together as a unit and played a game, so it gave us a chance to have a look at where we’re up to,” Payne says. “The results were a little bit disappointing.” Payne says despite the lopsided

scores, there were some encouraging periods of play from his side which he took heart from. However, they could not sustain the level of intensity needed to beat the top teams. “In the game against Wairarapa, we were in it for quite a long time then the score just blew out towards the end,” he says. “It was 3-2 or 4-2 in the second half and we were creating opportunities. “Then the Wairarapa boys just lifted it and we just couldn’t go with them.” Payne says the match against Wellington also went well in patches, but “silly little mistakes” let the side down. “And soft goals got let in which you just can’t afford to let in.”

He says a match-up with Nelson, who Marlborough did not play in the tournament, would have given his side a better measurement of where it was at, as it had beaten that side twice last year. Payne says he expects his side to struggle at the national tournament, but wants to see his players fight. “We want to be competitive against some of those sides. “We’ve got a month or so to work on these things, and a couple of exchanges with Nelson and that type of thing. “The boys need to work on their composure on the ball, being a bit stronger than they are, and just having that desire to get that 50-50 ball. “They just need a little bit of confidence.”

Williams’ comments an emotional boil over New Zealand caddy Steve Williams’ comments following Adam Scott’s victory at the Bridgestone Invitational golf tournament recently have sparked a lot of furore right around the world. Williams, who became the latest casualty of former heavyweight Tiger Woods’ meltdown when he was dumped by the American two weeks ago, claimed Scott’s victory was the best moment of his career. “I have been caddying for more than 30 years now. I have won 145 times and that is the best win of my life,” Williams said after the tournament. People have questioned whether this can really be the case; they’ve

criticised him for stealing Scott’s moment and they’ve wondered whether Williams realises he didn’t actually play. To me, the explanation is simple: it was an emotional boil over. Williams, quite rightly, clearly felt aggrieved to be a victim of Tiger’s downturn. After all, the pair had won 13 out of Woods’ 14 majors together. Quite what impact a caddy has on a golfer’s performance is unclear to most people who do not play golf seriously. But, surely, it is far from a coincidence that Williams’ new employer enjoyed success almost immediately after he joined him. Whether or not it was his greatest ‘win’, it was most likely

his sweetest. It was an ‘in-your-face!’ moment from the big New Zealander. It wasn’t graceful, it was unnecessary, but, to be fair, so was his dumping from Tiger. It’s off his chest, and it’s likely Williams will now go back to being the quiet, behind-thescenes achiever that he has been for so long. Other happenings: About 230 runners turned out for the Woodbourne Half Marathon on Sunday. Among them, yours truly, who decided two weeks ago to have a nudge at his first half marathon, came home in 1hr 49.

Reunion set to remember iconic local family Willie Smith (left) and Phil Brown are organising a reunion to be held in D e ce mb e r for employees who worked at the Ford Dealership. Photo by

By Celeste Lodewyk Reminiscing on past memories from the days of working for local man Ted Lucas will be just one of the highlights of a reunion organised for past employees of Lucas Bros Ltd (Lucas Ford) in December. The reunion will take place December 3 and is being organised by Willie Smith and Phil Brown. The Marlborough business is now known as McKendry Ford, but its roots stem back to the early 1900’s to the Lucas family.

Ed and his brother Fred Lucas first started a service garage in 1919 and later went on to lease a premise in Blenheim when they also took on the Ford franchise in Marlborough. In 1929 the Lucas brothers constructed a purpose built dealership in Alfred Street, where the new car park building now stands, where it remained for more than 60 years. When Ed retired in 1958, his son Ted took over the business which he ran for a number of years before selling the franchise to Steven Overton.

It is this time period which the reunion will be focusing on. Looking back through old photographs, Willie and Phil recall their own memories. Willie began his mechanics apprenticeship after leaving school in 1976 and was one of the last original staff to leave. From there he worked his way up to the service manager position. Phil joined the sales team in 1981 after leaving Christchurch for Blenheim for a lifestyle change.

“We had some great times and all really enjoyed working for Ted,” Willie says. “Ted was a really good boss and the business had a real family feel to it,” adds Phil. The reunion will be held at the Clubs of Marlborough. For those who would like to attend the reunion or to find out more information, contact Phil on 577 9959, email motors@xtra.co.nz or alternatively phone Willie on 021 732 446.
