Reform Bill a ‘half-job’ By Damian George Drug Arm Blenheimchairman Roy Ramsey says changes made to the Government’s Alcohol Reform Bill are a “halfjob” and it is dreaming if it thinks they will fix New Zealand’s drinking problem in the next 12 months. The Government last Roy Ramsey week accepted all of the 130 changes suggested by the Justice and Electoral Select Committee to tighten restrictions on advertising and sponsorship of alcohol. They include banning alcohol sales in dairies and regulating advertising in grocery stores, while a proposed split alcohol purchase age - 18 at bars and 20 at off-license premises - was not changed. Mr Ramsey, who offers help to drunken people on Blenheim streets through the Drug Arm van, says the government has not gone far enough with its changes. “The purchasing age needs to be addressed, and I think we need to be talking about a drinking age because we haven’t actually had that debate before,” he told The Sun. “There are many reasons why youths should not be drinking, and huge evidence to suggest that kids should not be drinking because it affects brain development.” Continued Page 2.

Diverse market a ‘new concept’ NEW TASTE [left to right]: Chen Zhihao of Fan’s Chinese Restaurant, Anita Burrell-Smith of Alpha & Omega, JJ’s Coffey owner Jamie Son [front], V Negi from Maharaja India, and Sakim Sushi’s Lucas Park will some of the fare they will be serving at Sunday’s market. Mr Son is holding baking from Maggie Jane’s baking company.
By Damian George Local barista Jamie Son hopes his new multi-cultural food market in central Blenheim’s Market Place will become a daily feature during Rugby World Cup 2011. Mr Son, who runs JJ’s Coffee caravan at Market Place, will hold his first market at the venue this Sunday after being granted consent by the Marlborough District Council recently. The market has been given a twomonth trial period, after which Mr Son and the council will assess the
venture’s future. But Mr Son plans to re-approach the council after two weeks to discuss the possibility of the market running daily during the World Cup. “We plan to show tourists that we have organised something in the CBD area for people to do during the World Cup,” he says. “Rather than just having them spend ten minutes in the CBD and leave, this may let people stay a little longer than they would. “It will be quite a good market, and it’s a new concept.”
The daily attraction would include an arts and crafts exhibition on Monday, a fundraising day for schools and charities on Tuesday, and the multi-cultural food market on Wednesday. Thursday would be a seafood day, mainly featuring mussels, and Friday would be a wine day showcasing Marlborough wines. At this stage, Mr Son has about ten people on board with the project. They include local cooks from a range of nationalities, including Indonesian, Indian, Korean, Japanese,
Chinese and Czech. He says the idea was sparked by a desire to help migrant cultures in Blenheim generate another source of income in a difficult economic time. “They will have first choice in terms of getting into the market and setting up the stalls,” he says. “But it’s not only for migrant people; it’s for everyone.” Mr Son is welcoming interest from any cooks or wineries who want to help with the initiative. Want to get involved? Call Mr Son on 021 268 8322.

From Page 1. Mr Ramsey says he is not sure exactly what the drinking age should be, but research shows alcohol can affect brain development up until the age of 25. He says he has seen people as young as nine years old intoxicated on Blenheim streets.
“I was dealing with kids on the street at 18 [years of age] when the purchasing age was 20, now I’m dealing with kids at 15 and 16,” he says. “These kids I’m dealing with are actually stuffing up their lives.” Mr Ramsey says increasing the purchase age will help to empower
Trusted for generations
parents in controlling what their children are doing. Controlled Purchase Operations [CPOs] also need to be done more frequently and made stricter, and advertising of alcohol should be banned completely, Mr Ramsey says. Other changes proposed in the bill
include preventing bars from selling alcohol until the time allowed on their licence, and restricting trading hours to between 8pm and 4am, except in special circumstances. Roy Ra msey was awa rded a Marlborough Civic Award earlier this month for his services to the community.

Renwick hall debate continues By Celeste Lodewyk A proposal which aims to see the transfer of ownership of the Renwick Community Memorial Hall to the Ministry of Education has been stopped dead in its tracks by a number of hall committee members who say they will remain “staunch” in their opposition. No decision can be made until all hall committee members have had a chance to decide their stance and only then can the committee begin talks about the proposed transfer. Hall committee secretary Frances Powell has scheduled a committee meeting for September 12 and says issues such as getting more information out to the public will be discussed. “Many Renwick residents thought the school already had the hall so that tells us that many don’t understand the whole issue. “We also hope to talk about how to build funds up and what improvements can be started on the hall,” she says. Hall committee chairman James Cresswell says although he is in favour of the ownership transfer, his decision is based on the school’s ability to finance the hall’s upgrades and maintenance. “In 2006/07 the committee
identified that hall expenditures were going to exceed income and at the time we agreed the practical solution was to give it to the Ministry of Education unless there was a big improvement in bookings. “Personally I don’t want to see the hall go to the government, but the fact is that the Ministry has the finances to move it forward,” he says. President of the Renwick branch of the RSA, and hall committee member Robin Harris says until such time that RSA members can discuss their stance, he cannot say which way they will vote. “In the Renwick branch we have around 46 members who will be asked if they are in favour or not which will happen at our AGM on September 5, and when that happens a representative will be given instructions on which way to vote,” he says. In the mean time hall committee member Rata Harper is continuing to challenge the proposal and says she is seeking answers to why the Renwick School has continually failed to make regular contributions toward the hall. “They are not honouring the agreement signed in 1984 which
states the school must contribute toward wear and tear and maintenance of the hall. “I would also like to know where the $10,000 grant that the school received for the hall has gone, and why it hasn’t been used to make contributions toward the 30 hours of use they get per week,” she says. In response to Rata’s claims, Brian Roughan, Renwick School Board of Trustees Chairman says the $10,000 was granted by the Canterbury Community Trust around two years ago for the sole purpose of going toward the hall. “But this was dependant on whether the hall was a school asset which at the time was looking certain that it was going to happen. “So for now the money is still sitting in our budget and can’t be touched for any other purpose other than the hall. If the ownership transfer does not go ahead then the money may likely have to be returned,” he says. Thank you to all the Sun readers who responded with their thoughts following our previous story run August 17, and please continue to email them to: celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz
Daffodil Day about giving, says cancer survivor By Celeste Lodewyk Daffodil Day has a very special meaning in the Marlborough community, but for local woman Lesley Brinsdon it highlights the support given by the Cancer Society to cancer sufferers like herself. Lesley was one of many dedicated volunteers who hit the streets on Friday to collect donations for the annual appeal. Smiling radiantly and standing cheerfully with her collection bucket, Lesley says she was overwhelmed by the public’s generosity. “Everyone was happy and seemed to be having fun with Daffodil Day. “People were very generous with most stopping to make a donation and others even coming back more than once,” she told the Sun. Lesley had only recently returned from Christchurch where she has been receiving Radiotherapy for her bone cancer. She has already survived Breast Cancer and says the support she has received from Cancer Society Marlborough has been “invaluable”. “I have had great support over the past six years that I have been fighting cancer. By Damian George Former Blenheim girl Gabrielle Taylor was hoping to prove she has the X-factor when she performed in the popular Australian televised talent competition recently. The 14-year-old, who moved to Perth with her family five years ago, became the youngest person from the city to reach the filmed auditions on the Seven Network reality show. The X-Factor Australia’s new season kicked off on Australian television on Monday, and will premiere on New Zealand television on TV3 on Saturday. Gabrielle’s mother Jacque also
auditioned on the show, which is judged this season by former Spice Girl Melanie Brown and other notable stage performers Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Guy Sebastian and Ronan Keating. Jacque says Gabrielle’s appearance on the show has helped the young performer immensely in her development. “It has been an amazing experience for Gabby and she is a lot more aware of what is needed in front of a camera now.” Gabr ielle has ver y st rong Marlborough links. She is the granddaughter of ex-
Blenheim mayor Tom Harrison, while her father John Taylor is a former Marlborough rugby coach and Jacque is an ex-Blenheim musician. The age limit for this year’s show was lowered from 16 to 14, and Gabrielle “couldn’t wait” to audition, Jacque says. Gabrielle, who still has very close connections with the Marlborough School of Dance, performs as a singer and dancer. She dances jazz, ballroom, tap, ballet, Spanish, highland, and hip hop. Gabrielle is also auditioning for the
Young Talent Time show in September for the troope who will dance and sing each week in the show. A Facebook fan page has been set up for Gabrielle for her journey on the show. It can be found under Gabby Taylor.
Omaka Cemetery officially reopened Interments at Marlborough’s historic Omaka Cemetery may begin again later this year, 35 years since the last person was buried there. The Marlborough District Council decided earlier this year to explore the possibility of making more use of the old cemetery, and two weeks ago formally agreed to re-open it. Council reserves and amenities officer Nic Crous says there is still some work to be completed before
burials can begin, but local funeral directors have been advised that the cemetery has re-opened. “Unfortunately, records relating to part of the cemetery were lost or destroyed many years ago so, while there is thought to be immediate space for about 100 plots, more investigative work will be needed before it’s clear exactly how many new plots can be accommodated,” Mr Crous says.

Unused open space will also be assessed for its suitability for plots and paths. “We also want to look at the possibility of creating walkway access through to the Taylor River banks to the west.” Mr Crous says preserving the character of the cemetery is important, and the council is drafting a development plan for the cemetery which recognises its historical significance.

The family mausoleums and wrought ironwork at Omaka date back to the settlement of Blenheim and some of the notable figures from Marlborough’s past are buried there. The cemetery is divided into various sections including a paupers’ section, a separate Catholic burial area, an RSA section and a children’s burial area. Mr Crous says the schedule of burial fees has yet to be finalised.

Ang has purchased the Renwick hair salon, formally known as Bare Essentials and as of a week ago reopened as ‘Cabello Hair & Beauty’. Joining her are senior stylists Sophie Parsons and Holly Gleeson who have come from Blenheim to share their expertise and passion for hair. Ang says she is thrilled with the salon’s location, beside the Renwick SuperValue Supermarket, and says the locals have been nothing short of welcoming. “I looked at a number of salons t o p u r c h a s e b u t w a s d r aw n t o the Renwick area because of its friendliness and strong community feel. “Already we have had locals popping in to introduce themselves which has been really nice, so I think we will fit in nicely here,” she smiles.

By Damian George Marlborough wineries have picked up a swag of awards at the 2011 New Zealand International Wine Show, with Saint Clair Family Estate the best of the lot, claiming nine gold medals. The Blenheim-based winery won recognition in three sections - sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and pinot noir following judging in Napier from August 15 to 17. Its sauvignon blancs accounted for four gold medals, while its pinot noirs claimed three gold and its chardonnays two. Saint Clair Family Estate marketing manager Sarina Ibbotson says the winery is “absolutely thrilled” with the result. “It’s a huge thrill for us to win medals in any show it’s a real buzz,” she says. “But particularly to win over different varieties chardonnay and pinot noir - was a huge compliment.”
Saint Clair entered both 2010 and 2011 wines in the competition. Other wineries to excel included Yealands Estate, Villa Maria Estate and Drylands Marlborough, which each won three gold medals. Yealands Estate founder Peter Yealands says the result is a “fantastic recognition” for his winery, and proof that sustainable environmental practises can produce top-quality, affordable wines. Yealands prides itself on being one of New Zealand’s most eco-friendly wineries. A panel of 24 judges, led by Bob Campbell MW, reviewed more than 2000 wines over the three days of judging. The New Zealand International Wine Show is New Zealand’s largest wine competition. Trophies will be announced at an Awards Dinner in Auckland on September 3.

Students rise to challenge It looked like a Master Chef Kitchen challenge at Bohally Intermediate’s technology centre on Thursday, as students frantically battled deadline to bake more than 400 cupcakes for an SPCA fundraiser. The 440 animal cupcakes sold within the community raised $800 for the Marlborough SPCA as part of the organisation’s Cupcake Day initiative. Bohally Intermediate technology teacher Heather Webster says the students did a superb job considering their age and the pressure they were under. “Some of them have never actually done this before,” she says. The students received some assistance from members of Blenheim’s Cake Decoration Guild.

Dear Ed, What a beautiful day Friday was. Congratulations to all those who dressed up in yellow and who made donations for Daffodil Day. As a Blenheim shopper and relatively new comer to Blenheim I was so impressed with the effort that

Election issues Dear Ed, I wonder how people are in the same boat as I am with the election in November? I am annoyed with National/Maori government over the foreshore and seabed bill, the rising cost of living, antismacking PC stupidity, its ignorance of the environment (e.g. polluted rivers and lakes and 1080 poison) and the unfair
treatment of the recreational fishers public over blue cod and set nets. Now Labour are no better. Labour’s Jim Anderton imposed the blue cod and set net bans and the pollution started back then. The Clark government like the Key government is arrogant. I think it’s time to give them both a message on November 26. K Llloyd

I Site response In response to Adam Delaney’s letter, published on August 24: Dear Editor, Interesting complaints about our town from “not impressed with I Site” Adam Delaney. Adam states he wanted to do 6 uniquely Marlborough things in one day. He obviously did not do any homework before bringing his 5 star friends on a road trip around the upper south? I’m sure “uniquely” Marlborough would include a trip out to the 5 star Sounds, or perhaps a tour through the 5 star cellar
doors where his 5 star guests could taste some 5 star wines (not the 2 buck chuck they drink at home) Instead he fixated on our brand new I Site with construction all around it, and seemed to only drive down Grove Rd, the highlight seeming to be The Warehouse and a railway line roundabout! Did Adam come over on the Ferry? All the information about 5 Star activities would have been available to him on board. How uniquely 5 star ignorant. Regards, Blenheim Girl
Hi. Tiny Mighty Power wants to make power cheaper for people in Blenheim and Picton. To find out more visit Jane in our office at 15E Maxwell Road, Blenheim or just call us on 03 578 5776. We’d love to have a chat.
Early bus please Dear Ed, I’d love it if the Blenheim bus service would start at a normal worker’s commute time of 8am. Even 8.30am would be a huge improvement.
A bus service that starts after 9am in any town is just not serving the working community in my opinion. Early bird.

Dear Ed, Trust and Theft - the two do not go together. It is easy to suspect someone especially when the person has access to the house on trust. A few months ago two items of evening wear and a folk art painting were removed
from our home. It seems these days if anyone sees anything they want that belongs to someone else, it is alright to take it. I would appreciate the return of these articles to the front door step. No questions asked. Desperate Request - Percy Street.

Stroke Awareness Week 5-11 September 2011
It’s about tIme.
Early identification saves lives Blenheim husband and wife Bill and Beryl Ward have experienced many things during their lives, but unfortunately stroke has been one of them. Bill suffered a stroke four years ago began experiencing “unusual” health, where he was vomiting, off balance and had double vision. Recognising these symptoms early Bill and Beryl called for an ambulance which took him to hospital where he was told he had suffered a stroke to the right side of his brain.
Bill spent 10 days in hospital, experienced the hiccoughs for four weeks and now has to wear glasses to correct his vision. Today he says his left arm “plays up” occasionally, feeling tender and cold. Grateful that Bill’s stroke had not been worse, the couple continued on until November last year when Beryl suffered a stroke. She had suffered a bleed in one of her eyes which after failed treatments continued to affect her. One day after speaking to her son on the telephone Beryl
turn around and instantly felt her head ‘spinning’. This was followed with vomiting and continued ‘spinning’ before she pressed her St Johns alarm to be taken to hospital. A scan revealed she had suffered a stroke and now nine months on Beryl still occasionally feels off balance, uses a walking stick and has problems with her vision. Bill and Beryl identified their symptoms early and made medical contact, something which could have potentially saved their lives.
Stroke - it’s about time! Stroke Awareness Week is September 5 - 11 and will be focusing on educating the community on the symptoms of stroke and how to recognise them. Disabilities caused by a stroke can last a lifetime, so show your support to the Stroke street collectors who will be in the Blenheim CBD and at supermarkets around Marlborough on Thursday, September 8.
What is a stroke?
A stroke is a brain attack and it can be fatal. Stroke is caused by an interruption of the blood flow to the brain. This can happen when a blockage, such as a clot blocks an artery in the brain or when a burst blood vessel causes bleeding into the brain.
When the blood flow stops to a part of the brain, the cells in that area start to die straight away. As the cells die the brain cannot work in the same way and this can affect a person’s ability to walk, talk, eat or think properly. There are many factors that can cause a stroke including: • Age: High blood pressure rises as people age. • Gender: Men are more likely to have high blood pressure than women. • Family history • Being overweight • Smoking • Excess salt in the diet • Lack of physical activity • Excessive alcohol intake • Diabetes

Blood pressure clinics for Blenheim Stroke is the third largest killer in New Zealand after heart disease and cancer. Each year around 7600 people suffer a stroke, that’s around 20 New Zealanders every day. Each day more than 2000 people die from stroke and of the estimated 45,000 stroke survivors in NZ, many of them have disabilities and need significant daily support. High blood pressure is a key risk factor for stroke as it puts pressure on the blood vessel walls
and causes them to thicken and break down. It can also weaken the walls of blood vessels in the brain, and it’s these vessels that can burst leaking blood into the brain and causing a haemorrhagic stroke. High blood pressure may also speed up some types of heart disease that can lead to stroke, and untreated will increase the risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney failure. It is known as the “silent killer” because sufferers can have high

In an effort to raise awareness of stroke and to educate communities on prevention, the Stroke Foundation Marlborough branch will be holding ‘blood pressure’ clinics at the Blenheim Library on September 8 and 9. Nurses from around the region will be available to take your blood pressure and provide information and advice about stroke. There will also be a display in the Picton Library.

Meeting to allow free admission to the ground floor exhibition for ratepayers of both Nelson City and 3/12/10 Tasman District. Museum CEO Peter Millward reported that over the course of the year approximately half of the visitors are local residents with the remainder split between the rest of New Zealand and overseas visitors. Locals will be asked to show evidence of residence. A Library card or a paid account bearing a name and address will be quite satisfactory. The Museum will issue a card to those locals who request it. Non-residents will be charged a nominal admission for entry to the TA445 Museum venue in Nelson City. Temporary and touring exhibitions such as the most recent Hard on the Heels exhibition and the hugely successful da Vinci Machines exhibition of 2008 are treated as business decisions on a case by case basis and the admission fees plus the support of sponsors needs to cover the costs of such displays. These sorts of exhibitions will attract an entry charge but the intention is that local residents will still see the benefits of their ratepayer support for the running of the Nelson Provincial Museum. Initially the charge for non-residents will be $5 for adults, $3 for children with family groups of two adults and accompanying children capped at $12. Preschoolers free.
General Collection The Museum holds a very diverse and fascinating range of natural and social history items in the General Collection. Areas of particular strength are Maori taonga and artefacts, domestic items including costumes, toys, china, furniture, glass and silver, paintings, ceramics, medals, coins, textiles from the colonial period through to contemporary items. Most items have links with the past of the Nelson / Tasman Region and reflect aspects of its history, or have been donated by residents of the region.

local vineyards, olive groves, boutique breweries and artist galleries. The region itself has numerous opportunities for walking, mountain biking and watersports. The city is set between the attractions of the Maitai Valley and Tahunanui Beach. Richmond Forest Park is literally on its doorstep and Rabbit Island Beach a short drive away. The city provides a compact but varied shopping experience. The Saturday Outdoor Market is an essential and atmospheric stop for food, jewellery and crafts.

MS no barrier for Jess
“We love Daffodil Day”
In honour of Daffodil Day Rapaura School students held their own fundraiser where students dressed in wacky yellow costumes and made individual donations. The school raised a total of $309.90. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk
Fun day for furry friends By Celeste Lodewyk Cup cakes and plenty of patting, a day in paradise for many dogs! SPCA Marlborough has organised a special day for our furry canine friends that will include everything they love; a walk, cup cake icing (and eating), a barbeque lunch and plenty of competitions to show off at. The ‘Cup Cakes and Canines’ fun Day is being held this Saturday to help fundraise for the refurbishment of SPCA Marlborough’s puppy and dog shelter, which was once used to hold zoo animals. The shelter is currently cold and damp and the centre tries to
avoid using it as much as possible, says SPCA Marlborough manager Kate Horrey. “We want to make it warm, dry and comfortable for puppies and expectant and nursing mothers so the money raised will go toward this,” she says. The fun day is open to the whole community and dog owners are welcome to bring their canine friends. There will be a communal walk around the vines at 1pm, and dogs need to be leashed and have a supply of doggydoo bags. There will also be a range of dog competitions held in the front donkey paddocks between
1:30pm and 3pm and there will be a bouncy castle and cup cake icing for the kids. Dog obedience and agility displays will be held and the public is encouraged to walk through the grounds to meet animals waiting to be adopted. Entry is a gold coin entry and if it rains, the event will be postponed until September 10.
By Celeste Lodewyk This week is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Week and in highlighting the important work that the MS Society does, local woman and Society member Jess Moss shares her story of living with MS. Jess was first diagnosed with MS at the age of 22. She woke one morning experiencing complete numbness from the hips down and after visits to specialists, an MRI scan and a lumber puncture she received her diagnosis. She admits that it took a few years to accept her MS, but after becoming involved with the Marlborough MS Society she learned more about the disease and was able to accept it as part of her life. “Talking to other members in similar situations helped me to accept what I have and I became eager to learn more about MS. Since her diagnosis Jess has had relapses which required her to take medication, and although it doesn’t “cure” MS, it speeds up the length of the attack and helps decrease the damage to her nervous system. Despite not knowing what lies ahead of her, Jess refuses to let MS get in the way of enjoying her life and setting herself goals to achieve, a message she gives to other MS sufferers in the community.

“After joining the Marlborough MS and Parkinson’s Society I found great support from other members, and the information they were able to provide enabled me to accept that I had MS and move on. “I encourage others to do so,” she smiles. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Week runs from August 29 to September 4. This Friday there will be a street collection around Blenheim and all money raised locally stays locally. Show your support by making a donation.

celebrating
Father’s Day
19
sunday september 4 2011
Ideas for celebrating Father’s Day Father’s Day is all about making Dad feel special and letting him know how much you appreciate him. Begin Father’s Day with a big hug and tell him five things you love most about him. For example, “You have always been there for me, you take time to hear about my day, you make special time to spend with me, if I am sad you make me feel happy and when you leave for work you always give me a big hug”. If you want to give your father a gift make it something thoughtful and personal. Think of your father’s favourite things and organise a special gift or outing surrounding that theme. Here are some art and craft ideas to get you started.
Sweet Tooth Make a special ‘sweet-tooth basket’ for Dad with some of his favourite treats. These could include his favourite gourmet chocolates, homemade fudge, a freshly baked cake, or even roast some nuts with maple syrup and wrap them in cellophane and ribbon.
Handy Man Take a plain photo frame and decorate it with things that your father likes such as nuts, bolts, nails, latches and odds and sods from his workshop and then put a photo of yourself in the inside.
Handmade Handmade photo frames really are a personal expression of love. Going through your photo albums will give
you all the inspiration you need to create your own ‘frame of memories’. Here’s a hint: Black and white photos always look timeless!
text city to 5405 to get Dad a free pass to workout at cityfitness
At the Office Write a short poem or note for your Father and hide it in his lunch box or work bag. Something for his desk; Take a clean tin can and make a great pen caddy for Dads office by covering it with photos of you.
Sports Nut Make a sports log book so he can keep track of his favourite teams. Make headings on each page for the date, opposition, venue, weather conditions and score. Depending on the sport, you can add headings for things like penalties, fouls, tries, goals or rebounds for each of his favourite players. Decorate the front cover by cutting out pictures of his favourite sport, team or players.
Music Lover Copy a selection of your father’s favourite songs onto CD, and create a great album cover telling him he’s the “Best Dad in the World”. Every time he listens to the CD, he’ll think of you. Above all else, remember to tell your father how much you love him and how much you appreciate the things he does for you. Make him a cup of tea, and let him watch the news in peace - he really will appreciate it!
Redken giveaway Purchase any Redken for Men Shampoo and Work Hard Molding Paste in the lead up to Father’s Day and receive $10 off the combined purchase. Work Hard Molding Paste shapes with moldable texture to create styles with firm control. Whilst Redken Shampoos work to ensure in-salon style care. In celebration of this offer we are giving away two Redken prize packs each containing Redken Go Clean Shampoo and Redken Work Hard Molding Paste – valued at $66.00 each. Friends of the Emergency Department St John is looking for caring and dedicated members for some special volunteer roles. St John Friends of the Emergency Department play an important role in 18 Emergency Departments nationwide, including Wairau Hospital. In times of distress, people need more than treatment, they also need information and support. Because Emergency Departments are always busy, staff often don't have time to give patients and their families the support and reassurance they're looking for. That's where St John Friends of the Emergency Department make such a difference. Some of the tasks they carry out include offering reassurance to patients and their relatives/friends, assisting patients with food and drinks when asked by staff, sitting quietly with a distressed patient, being above all a FRIEND, to listen, to smile. St John is currently looking for volunteers to be Friends at Wairau Hospital. We have weekend shifts available (11.00am-3.00pm and 6.00pm – 10.00pm) and are also looking for people to be on-call reserves. If you are interested in becoming a Friend of the Emergency Department at Wairau Hospital or would like more information please contact: Helen Faulkner St John 93 Seymour Street, Blenheim Ph 03 578 0797

Pistorius inclusion will open up a can of worms There was something unusual about the men’s 400m race at the athletics world championships in Daegu on Sunday. In heat five, seven athletes were running with feet, and one wasn’t. South African Oscar Pistorius, who runs with carbon fibre prosthetic blades in place of his lower legs, qualified for the event’s semi-finals in his first world championships after running a respectable 45.39 seconds. The 24-year-old, nicknamed the ‘Blade Runner’, has overcome a long and complex legal battle to become the first amputee to race in athletics’ showpiece event. The problem is, Pistorius and his rivals are clearly not competing on an even playing field. I n it i a l ly [ i n 2 0 0 7 ] , t h e
International Association of Athletics Federations [IAAF] banned Pistorius from able-bodied competition, ruling his artificial limbs actually worked more efficiently than normal human limbs. The following year, though, the ruling was overturned, after research by biophysicist Hugh Kerr countered claims that the artificial legs gave him an “unnatural” rate of fatigue. In other words, his cardiovascular output was the same as able-bodied athletes. This comment from Herr, in response to objections about Pistorius competing at the highest level, is admirable. “We’re imagining a world in which you happen to be born
By Damian George Former Marlborough rugby captain Ramon Sutherland says a struggling Tasman needs to curb its attacking instinct if it wants to win more national provincial games. The Makos won just two matches in this year’s ITM Cup and finished last in the competition’s second-tier Cup Championship. It could have been a much different story for the Makos had it converted a string of narrow losses into confidence-building victories. It lost four of its last five games by four points or less - including a 32-36 loss to top Cup Premiership qualifiers Canterbury - and lost a further two by 10 points or less.
Sutherland, captain of the Red Devils when it snatched the Ranfurly Shield off Canterbury in 1973, says the Makos side is lacking patience and losing games it should win. “I don’t think they know how to win,” he says. “Even though they at times play attractive rugby, a lot of the time they’d be far better kicking for possession and trying to get position on the paddock.” Sutherland says Tasman’s inability to close out tight matches was exemplified in its last match of the season against Manawatu on Thursday. The Makos lost the match after outplaying Manawatu for much of the game and leading the Turbos

without fibulas, and you also happen to be the world’s best athlete. You should have the freedom to become that.” But the fact of the matter is the situation is a farce. Whether or not the Blade Runner’s legs are an advantage or a disadvantage, no one really knows. Pistorius is a remarkable, worldclass athlete. Make absolutely no mistake of that. The concern is where this will lead. In international cricket, laws regarding how far bowlers can straighten their arm were amended in 2005 to allow players like Sri Lanka’s Mutiah Muralitharan to continue playing. The implications of this IAAF move will open up a large can of worms.

right up until it conceded a try in the last two minutes. “They threw it away when they could have won the game,” he says. “When they got ahead, they couldn’t keep control of the ball and they turned it over and that’s what happens.” Sutherland says there remains potential within the Tasman side, but a lot of players “didn’t really front up” this season. “There’s some real good boys there - [loose forward] Joe Wheeler’s improved out of sight since he’s got over that [shoulder] injury, and that [flanker Shane] Christie looks good. “And [prop Sam] Prattley, the Rai Valley boy, has done very well too.”

feelings over a shot or pressure situation. Sir Walter Simpson, a Scottish philosopher and author of the 1887 book The Art of Golf, says it best: “Golf is not one of those occupations in which you soon learn your level. There is no shape nor size of body, no awkwardness nor ungainliness, which puts golf beyond one’s reach. “Beginners in middle age have become great and, more wonderful
still, after years of patient duffering, there may be a rift in the clouds. “In golf, whilst there is life, there is hope.” There are not many sports in the world where you can socialise and meet people while playing. Golf - the sport for all ages By Jonti Phillipson I have played golf with top tour pros, elite amateurs, social golfers, and the ‘one-can-a-hole’ characters. The question I am frequently asked is: “Pros’ swings must feel great all the time - is that how you feel, Jonti?” I wish I did, and it would make sense if it were the case. But it’s not. Top PGA tour players and the average hacker share the same

“Every man needs a good wife” Couple still in love 60-years on By Celeste Lodewyk “It’s a good woman that holds a marriage together”, says Wesley (Wes) Gardiner. Wes and his wife June (nee Powell) celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 18, and despite the fact they no longer live in Marlborough their ties to the region still remain strong. Wes was born in Marlborough and raised in the Tinline area near the Pelorus Bridge and is known in the region for the businesses he has owned and the work he did on the Redwood Rabbit Board. June was also born in Blenheim but raised in Ward, the town where they first met. “It must have been love at first sight,” Wes jokes. Wes was attending a dance at a Ward Show night with June’s cousin and spotted June sitting at the opposite end of the hall. “I asked if I could escort her home at the end of the night, so when she said yes I knew she was interested too,” he says. The two didn’t see one another again for four months until they met again at dancing lessons in Blenheim, where June invited him to visit her at home. Love soon blossomed and before long they married at the Anglican Church in Ward in 1951. “I will never forget our wedding day,” Wes laughs. “We had the reception at the Ward hall but had to go home to milk the cows half way through the night.
“We went back afterwards to find my mad rugby mates at the hall, and ended up having to climb out the hall’s windows to get away from them.” Four children, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren later Wes and June are still very much in love and enjoying being surrounded by their family. “There are many different factors in a long and happy marriage,” they say. “Your first love is raising your family, then after you have a devotion love. You mill up so much love over time that when the children leave home you still remain strong. “Overall, family is what makes a marriage last, it’s the children that hold you together. If the young ones of today could think of the children and how much it would mean to them to remain together, then their marriages would last like ours has.” For their anniversary, Wes and June received cards from the Queen, Prime Minister, Governor General and one from their local Mayor in Waikari where they live.
