By Damian George news@blenheimsun.co.nz Marlborough businesses need to concentrate on service and not on price tags if they want to entice shoppers away from the internet and back into stores, the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce says. A soaring New Zealand dollar, which sat at 87 US cents as of last night, has seen a surge in international online shopping by Kiwis recently as overseas prices drop. Marlborough Chamber of Commerce general manager Brian Dawson says what businesses cannot match in price, they must make up for in other areas. “The days have gone where you can simply sell a basic product or service in exchange for money and expect to retain the customer,” Mr Dawson says. “You have to add value in some other way. That’s really the challenge for local businesses.” Continued Page 3.

How to reach us

Local ‘pioneer’ now centenarian By Celeste Lodewyk There are many Marlburians who still remember being served by a smiling Jessie Windleburn, from when she and her husband Ernest built their ‘New Era Store’ in 1961, now known as the Burleigh Deli. That same vibrant smile is even bigger this week as Jessie prepares to celebrate her 100th birthday this Sunday. The Sun visited Jessie to look back over her life and discuss her highlights and time spent living in Blenheim. Jessie was born in Wanganui and received much of her education in private schools. She did however attend Havelock School before going on to secondary education in Nelson. Jessie married husband Ernest Windleburn and settled in Marlborough to raise a family

and open their own general store. Described as a “pioneer” of their time, Jessie and Ernest built a house and store at the corner of Battys and New Renwick Roads and named it the New Era Store, inspired by the new era of Jessie’s life and a new addition to the area. There they serviced the rural community and were remembered for their friendly manner. Local architect Dai Jones was Jessie’s first customer and later went on to purchase the store and house in 1986. He recalls how popular the store was with the locals. “Where they built the store was a growing subdivision of young families, so you could say she was a pioneer. She ran it well and was very popular with the locals,” he says. Aside from the store, Jessie

also had a great passion for the arts as well as outdoor activities such as white baiting which she enjoyed up into her 80s. “I would get up at 4am to go white baiting, I really loved it. “In fact I wish I could go now, I still have my rod and net,” she grins.

The tender for Blenheim’s new Wynen Street car park will go out early next week with the project likely to be completed sometime in October, Marlborough District Council executive projects manager Jamie Lyall says. Mr Lyall says it is hoped a tender for the $500,000 project will be secured by September 1. The development involves demolishing the old Working Men’s Club building on the site and extending the existing car park, creating about 100 more parking spaces. Meanwhile, Mr Lyall confirmed the resource consent for the site is now effectively owned by the council, after the developer who initially got the consent pulled out of plans to develop a $15 million Farmers Trading Co department store. A second developer later pulled out of the same project. Mr Lyall says all consents lie with the land. As the land is council-owned, consents are in effect also owned by the council.

More complaints about Bunk House Contractor remains silent By Damian George Several more people have expressed their concern about working conditions at Blenheim vineyard contractor Kiwi Bunk House following a protest which saw two workers sacked from the company recently. A Kiwi Bunk House employee, grandmother of a former employee and accommodation provider for overseas tourists who worked for the company are among those who have added their weight to the protest against the employer. Their comments follow a complaint from two American tourists, that the company are offering contracts which heavily favour the employer, and that some workers are not taking home minimum wage. That story was published in The Sun last week. Kiwi Bunk House did not wish to comment on those complaints, and have again ignored requests from The Sun to respond to the latest complaints. Dave Speedy, who occasionally houses overseas tourists in his home in Taylor Pass, says three separate groups expressed their disgust at the company’s working conditions when they stayed with him. The tourists were in Blenheim as part of the WWOOF [Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms] programme.

He says two of the groups, both English tourists in their mid-20s, also complained about not being paid minimum wage. Both groups, who have since left New Zealand, were told they had to purchase the company’s equipment rather than provide their own, while one was told they could not stay at Kiwi Bunk House unless they worked for one of the company’s contractors, Mr Speedy says. “They made some comment about New Zealand American tourists James and Alex Clark and Chinese labour rates, lodged a formal complaint against Kiwi because [the employer] Bunk House recently. didn’t make the pay up to says her granddaughter comthe basic rate,” he says. “They said it was third-world plained of “abusive, rude and conditions and said ‘I thought demeaning” behaviour from the you had a minimum wage here’.” then supervisor while working A current employee, who does for Kiwi Bunk House two years not wish to be named, says she is ago. She left the company after she struggling to get by because her wages have been cut and she is and some workers had missed not receiving the minimum wage. out on their lunch break, Mrs She says working conditions Gray says. “The other workers - most stayare the worst she has experienced “I have never felt what it means ing at Kiwi Bunk House - were to have my human rights threat- most unhappy,” Mrs Gray says. “They were told they would ened, my sense of worth bullied and a fear to speak to the boss lose their jobs if they moved out for fear of serious reprisal like I [of Kiwi Bunk House]. “They considered Blenheim have working for this company,” a third-world hole and advised she told The Sun. Blenheim woman Judith Gray their friends.”

Contractors must ‘protect themselves’ By Damian George Two Marlborough vineyard contractors say measures to protect employers are essential in their industry to safeguard against lazy workers who do not meet the demands of the job. Their comments come after a complaint from two American tourists that Blenheim contractor Kiwi Bunk House is offering contracts which heavily favour the employer, and that some workers are not taking home minimum wage. Both were laid off by the company after demading changes to the contracts before signing them. Precise Contracting and BK Horticulture Ltd say, while they do not want to comment on that particular case, employees need to realise that contractors can be crippled by workers who milk the system. Vineyard employees are paid a ‘peace rate’ according to their work output, but are entitled to be topped up to the minimum hourly rate ($13) if they do not reach it. “We have some workers who are earning $200 a day, and some who are earning $50 a day,” Precise Contracting owner Rhonda Burridge says.

“When someone demands the minumim wage, that means we are taking money from someone else in the gang who has actually earned it.” Mrs Burridge says there are plenty of good contractors in Marlborough, and people need to sort the good ones from the bad. “If the contract looks unreasonable, don’t sign it. It’s as simple as that.” BK Horticulture Ltd owner Ajay Gaur says New Zealand’s rules regarding minimum wage are “stupid” and are not helping employers. He says he laid off an employee recently who was slacking off and told Mr Gaur he did not have to work any harder because he was getting paid by the hour. “The government doesn’t look at the other side - what the recession is doing [to contractors],” he says. “If we’re topping employees up, we have a limited margin. This country needs revenue.” Kiwi Bunk House employees face losing two weeks’ pay and must front with two weeks’ rent if they resign before finishing their term. Employees are also asked to complete three days of unpaid training under the contractor.

skipper charged The skipper of a Dolphin Watch vessel which collided with an Outward Bound boat earlier this year has been convicted and charged with failing to keep a proper lookout. Michael John Lemberg, 49, pleaded guilty to the charge in the Blenheim District Court on Wednesday. Mr Lemberg, unemployed, was ordered to pay a total of $4400 in reparation to Outward Bound and the 12 students on board its boat when the collision occurred in Queen Charlotte Sound on February 5. The charge was brought following a Maritime NZ investigation.

Blenheim name on rich list Blenheim-born Professor David Teece was last week named at number 33 in the National Business Review’s Rich List for 2011. The California-based economist, worth about $190 million, heads the rapidly growing Berkeley Research Group [BRG] which consults to major law firms, Fortune 500 companies and government agencies. Professor Teece moved to Nelson at the age of 12, before earning his BA and MComm at Canterbury University, then moving offshore.

It was the New Zealander’s third win in as many races in this year’s competition, and takes him 25 points clear of second-placed Czech Martin Semerad with three rounds remaining.

Instructor welcomes driving law changes By Damian George A local driving instructor says he is looking forward to seeing fewer accidents on Marlborough’s roads following the implementation of an increase in the driving age on Monday. The increase in the driving age from 15 to 16 was the first of a number of changes set to be introduced in coming months aimed at improving road safety among young people. The blood alcohol limit for drivers under 20 will reduce to zero on Sunday, and restricted licence tests will be significantly strengthened from February next year. Regent School of Motoring

driving instructor Mike McCann says the change will result in safer roads, though he would like to see the driving age set at 18. “It’s a great thing; it’s a positive move forward because there’s too many young people killing themselves on the roads,” he says. “I think it will make a big impact.” Mr McCann says a number of young people get a licence at 15 or 16 and are “all about fast cars” which they are often not old enough to control. “Everybody thinks they’re bulletproof on the roads and they go too fast and the car becomes a weapon.

Blenheim driving student Jaron morris, 15, with driving instructors rod hill and mike mccann ahead of his restricted licence test yesterday. Jaron is one of the last drivers who will be able to sit the test before turning 16, as he booked the test before a driving age increase came into effect on monday. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk.

“People have got to be careful – cars are a lot more powerful these days.” He says the lowering of the alcohol limit is long overdue and should apply to all drivers. Regent School of Motoring chief driving instructor Rod Hill says the biggest impact on road

Car park opens with free parking

By Damian George Motorists were making the most of free parking on Monday and Tuesday as the Alfred St car park opened to the public. The ground floor and levels one and two of the new complex opened on Monday morning, with the Marlborough District Council offering free parking until an automated pay-as-you-leave ticket system is installed early next month. Tony and Shirlee Blake, from Picton, were testing out the new facility yesterday and gave it their tick of approval. They come to Blenheim once or twice a week.

“It’s nice to be able to park somewhere where you don’t have to run back and feed the meter,” Shirlee says. “I think it’s a great idea.” Under the payment system, drivers will collect a ticket on arrival and pay on their return. They will be given 15 minutes to leave the car park once they have paid. Building contractor Calder Stewart will continue to work on level three, which will be

Sun readers have their say... Q: What do you remember most about your school formal?

I didn’t get to go as I left school too early.

How much I hated it.

Driving my red Mini with my formal partner, girlfriend and squeezing Anton Oliver into the passenger seat!!

The photos with all my friends. It’ s something that you can keep and have forever.

Having all my friends all together, laughing and having fun, knowing we were going to have a great night and remember it forever.

I avoided going to them. I didn’t see any point in them and it was a waste of time.

Letters to the editor

Milk price Dear Ed, I saw on Campbell Live where a big “bottle” of NZ milk sells in UK for $2 when it’s $3 here. How does this come about? Why are our prices to NZ consumers set by export prices? Goods sold here do not have the cost of transport involved so should be cheaper. NZers are being ripped off. As I watch these sorts of things, I see National and Labour are both free market driven to the point of failing the electors’ interests and ripping the people off. One way to show the two main parties they are failing is under MMP to vote for a minor party. Democrat

Petrol rort Dear Ed, Petrol prices go up and down and back up at the whim of the gang of oil companies. I notice slow to come down but very quick to go up too. When is government going to wake up, petrol is the biggest inflationary factor and not in the

interests of the economy. Or are Bill English and John Key just thinking, the higher the price, the more the GST rake off is? Key and English should forget their free market obsession and have price control on petrol. H Francis

Kiwi Bunk House Dear Ed, Finally, two brave Americans have stood up against Kiwi Bunk House. Bravo to them for bringing up this matter. This problem has being going on for some time, and many of my Asian friends have become their working holiday slaves. It has been a nightmare for them once they check in. They are forced to stay minimum three months, because of the NZ$300 deposit (no refund). They are provided job at vineyard through contractor, but their wages was not paid directly to them. They received their pay from Kiwi Bunk House after

deducting room rental. This is totally outrageous. Regardless whether they work for a day or longer, they are forced to buy brand new pruning gear, costing above $NZ300. Kiwi Bunk House is not the only backpacker house that is doing this. We hope some authorities will investigate this matter as soon as possible before they tarnish New Zealand’s or Blenheim’s clean image. We don’t want backpackers to return home with a bad impression of New Zealand. Very Very Disappointed

Dear Ed, I read the article on page 3 of the Sun 21st July 2011 headed “Confusion over heat pump contract” in total disbelief. Question: Why wasn’t the heat pump contract for 177 council homes advertised openly locally with a warning - EECA Accreditation was a requirement. This town is well represented by a number of refrigeration and air conditioning contractors who have earned the respect of local and out of town customers. Dare I admit to having trained some of those personal. All would have numerous consents to operate within the trade, BUT would be staggered to find they need yet another consent paper with a tick box to qualify as a tenderer. The consequence of not winning a tender: • Tendering has a cost - unseen by

the customer • Every project has to raise capital that must be serviced • Major part of the capital will be spent outside of the town • The payback of capital and interest will become a commitment from the local rate payer • The ratepayer looks to local employers for sustenance • The local economy needs successful business to build a strong town • The employees of the out of town contractors will collect their sustenance but will not pay any of this towards Marlborough Rates. I close my comments before deep depression overwhelms, go dig a hole to shelter in before the flak that will surely follow arrives. John May Retired Refrigeration Engineer

Matthew Ryan

Owner and sole operator of Matthew’s Mechanical Services, Matthew Ryan has put his 14-years industry experience to good use after opening the business more than two years ago. Cars and mechanics have played a large part in Matthew Ryan’s life, so owning his own mechanical services business has been an exciting career move. Born and bred in Marlborough, Matthew started his career working at Blenheim Toyota where he began as an apprentice. There he worked for seven-years before taking his skills across the ditch to Australia. Still working for Toyota, Matthew also trained as a Lexus technician before returning home to Blenheim. His desire to operate his own business prompted him to begin Matthew’s Mechanical Services which he based from home. “I always had a dream to own a business so I am really happy with how things are going. “People love coming to the workshop because it’s an open area and they can see what is going on and more imporantly, it’s me they are dealing with,” he says. The majority of Matthew’s business came from word of mouth and referrals from his

many satisified customers. “Having that one on one personal relationship with customers is what brings people back,” he says. After only two years, Matthew’s Mechanical Services had grown so much that it needed a new premises. So five months ago Matthew packed up his tools and moved into a larger work space at 35 Main Street in Blenheim. There he carries out every aspect of mechanical work on all types of vehicles, from cars to utilities to trailers to light commercial vehicles. For those whose vehicles need to spend a day or more in the workshop, Matthew has a courtesy car and a four-wheel drive for loan. Open 8am -5pm Monday to Friday, and on the weekend by arrangement Matthew is available to help with all your mechanical problems. Simply phone or call in and see him today.

Look good - feel great!

Stay body beautiful with local businesses Imagine sitting atop of a lush green hill, sipping a cup of herbal tea whilst listening to the cheerful twittering of native birds. Being so close to nature, breathing the fresh air and enjoying the quiet away from the everyday stress of life can provide a much needed cleanse of the mind, body and soul. There are also a number of local businesses which specialise in providing the ultimate relaxation escape. Pampers Escape, located on the north side of the Wairau River (adjacent to Rapaura Road) provides all people of Marlborough a “place in paradise” to escape to.

There they can have their soul and senses put back in order in a beautiful and magical environment while they enjoy one of many beauty therapy treatments. Another way to unwind and relax is by having a hand massage and nail treatment. ‘Beautiful Nails’ technician Melissa Henderson says her clients enjoy the privacy and relax environment of her home based Blenheim business. Treat your hands and feet to a chic set of acrylic nails or even a set of party tips for when you want to impress on a social occasion. For those wanting to refresh their look, a stylish new cut and colour from Vogue

Hairstylists on Maxwell Road is just the ticket. Sit back and relax while one of their skilled hair stylists transforms your hair, leaving you feeling fresh and revitalized. To top off your relaxation escape, Trilby Johnson can help to empower you to achieve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being through her business Be Yu Well-Being. She offers a wide variety of techniques including massage therapy, Reiki Healing, traditional hot stones, holistic energy bodywork, well being coaching, providing oneness blessings and Access Bars.

Yummy mummies A common goal among new mothers is how to get rid of their pregnancy weight or “jelly bellies”, and regain their toned and more flatter stomachs. For some women it can be an easy task but for others it is an uphill battle that takes many months, even years. With proper exercise and a healthy diet the process can be much easier than you think. Proper nutrition and a gradual

return to other forms of exercise (walking, jogging, weight lifting) are just as important in restoring the body to its pre-pregnancy state. You’ll never see a “six pack” if a layer of fat is overlaying it. Weight loss and fitness take patience, time, and discipline; if things are pushed too soon, other problems can arise. For example, begin with a casual stroll around your neighbourhood and as you feel stronger, increase

the intensity level. Move on to a gentle jog and when you feel up to it, increase your jogging pace. By starting with low intensity exercise you are enabling your body to adjust at a comfortable rate. Remember that your body has had to cope with many changes during the pregnancy and birth so take your time and don’t push your body beyond its limits, good things happen in good time!

Celebrating the mind and body

The relationship between the body, mind and our health is an important one. For many people spirituality, meditation, mindfulness, exercise, good nutrition and self care are what keep the body and mind in harmony which in turn makes us healthy. It is important to know that it is we who create our own happiness. It comes from within us and we as individuals have the capability to create our own lives as we want it. Here are some fun tips toward boosting your physical and mental wellbeing. 1) Orienteer

An adventure at any age, orienteering gets you back to nature, be it in the local woods or an urban park, and gives a mental and physical boost. 2) Belly dance

One of the most effective ways to tighten the tummy muscles and help get rid of excess flab is to take inspiration from the Middle East and belly-dance. 3) Hide the remote

Experts say that even the simplest spontaneous activity helps prevent weight gain. Park your car further away from your destination, sit on an exercise ball and roll around while you’re working at the computer, make two trips when unpacking your shopping and hide the remote control so you have to get up.

Nelson Marlborough DHB Plans for 2011/12 We believe this Annual Plan will ensure that Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) can deliver high quality health and disability services to our community by working smarter and more efficiently while operating within our allocated funding. To see our planned specific actions and activities over the coming year view our Annual Plan at www.nmdhb.govt.nz.

>> Funding

and Expenditure

Funding NMDHB receives population-based funding and funding for specific crown allocations from the Government. This means funding is allocated on the basis of the: number of people, use of health services, ethnicity and socio-economic status, and how many people in rural areas. This totals $359m We also receive funds from other DHBs for their people treated in our hospitals, however as we are a ‘provincial DHB’ we contribute a much greater amount to other DHBs for our people to receive a range of services that we do not provide locally such as, for example, heart bypass operations, cancer treatments and organ transplants. This is shown as Other DHBs in the graph below under expenditure. This totals $8m Direct funding from Ministry of Health to Public Health, some screening services, Needs Assessment, life-long disability funding. This totals $21m We also receive payment from ACC for surgical and other interventions, private patients and interest. This totals

What we’re doing Our over arching goals are to achieve the best health outcomes for our patients and financial viability for the district and regional health sectors. The Annual Plan outlines the implementation of patient-centred service delivery through the more clinically focussed Executive Leadership Team. This new structure has strengthened clinical leadership across the district through increasing clinical involvement across specialist and community services. The DHB will continue to work with Primary Health Organisations, Mental Health providers and Iwi providers to achieve greater collaboration through health systems that work better across the full span of services. The Annual Plan also outlines how the regional delivery of services across the South Island will be implemented through the South Island Regional Health Services Plan.

World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7) is celebrated in over 170 countries around the world, and here in Marlborough we too are playing a part in acknowledging the importance of breastfeeding. The highlight of the week, ‘The Big Latch On’ (now in its sixth year), will be held in Blenheim at the Clubs of Marlborough on August 5. Last year a record 38 mothers got together for The Big Latch On

countdown, which saw around 1500 mothers nationwide take part. Registrations on the day are at 10am and the countdown begins at 10:30am and morning tea will be provided. And in appreciation of the impressive support of the Marlborough community, fantastic spot prizes will also be gifted out to congratulate the breastfeeding Mums of Marlborough.

This year’s theme; “Talk to me! Breastfeeding - a 3D experience”, hopes to encourage and strengthen inter-generational communication which seems to have been lost with time. Becoming a new mother is an overwhelming time in a woman’s life and often breastfeeding does not come easily. Receiving support from friends and whanau is incredibly valuable to help ensure that confidence is not lost and to encourage the Mum to keep persevering with the great job she is doing. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends breastfeeding for the first two years of a child’s life. In New Zealand the majority of mothers do not make it past the six week mark. World breastfeeding week also serves

to bring together community organisations that are committed to promoting breastfeeding and supporting parents who make the choice to breastfeed their children and to thank and acknowledge them for the important work they are doing. The Marlborough Breastfeeding Network was formed to ensure new mums are being supported at all stages throughout their journey. Currently we meet quarterly and consist of representatives from Maataa Waka, Plunket, Maternity Services, The Breastfeeding Clinic, Mum4Mum, Babes in arms, Public Health, Te Rapuora, Ngati Rarua and NPA. However, anyone with an interest in supporting breastfeeding is very welcome to be involved: breastisbest@ maataawaka.co.nz

Community support is invaluable too. to mark the occasion bright blue breastfeeding friendly logos will be displayed in supportive cafes throughout the Marlborough Region.

World Breastfeeding Week 2011 augu s t 1-7

Breastfeeding best By Celeste Lodewyk Mother of three, Samara Edgecombe believes in the importance of breastfeeding and shares her experiences as part of World Breastfeeding Week 2011. Pictured with Isaiah (5months), Evi (22months) and Wesley (5years), Samara has had very different breastfeeding experiences with each of her children. “With Wesley I had to stop after six weeks due to his Colic and I was advised to feed him formula to help settle him at night, otherwise he would cry for two hours straight. I was gutted I couldn’t continue breastfeeding him, but I accepted it. “When Evi was born I knew I wanted to breastfeed as long as I could. Mostly because she was very easy to feed, but also because I wanted to save money on formula. I had to stop when Evi was five months because

I returned to work, which I found really hard especially as I didn’t want to lose the convenience of breastfeeding. “Isaiah is my last baby which in a way makes it quite special, so I am planning to breastfeed as long as I can, between nine and 12 months I hope. Sometimes I think it would be easier to bottle feed him as I have my two older children also needing my attention, but this is where having a supportive partner is really important. “If I am in the middle of feeding Isaiah, my husband Warren will take the other two away and distract them. He will also take Isaiah and burp him after a feed so I can have a break as well as helping out with housework, it’s been great support,” she says. Show your support for World Breastfeeding Week 2011 by encouraging the women in our community with their breastfeeding efforts.

3) That there is a heaven to gain and a hell to shun 4) That Jesus Christ is God in the flesh and the only way to eternal life 5) That there is a religious huckster on every corner with a belief or an idea not found in the Bible – such lies can prove eternally fatal (Matt 23:15) 6) If it is in the Bible, BELIEVE IT! If not, TOSS IT OUT! (Isa 8:20) Despite accusations to the contrary, we are not the only voice in Marlborough. We will still be preaching and teaching down on Wither Road and we will still be out on the streets and on your doorsteps preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Picton team end 28-year drought

The victorious Picton Women’s Pennant golf team [left to right]: Maria McConway, Joan Golding, Cushla Brosnahan, Marie Rea, Margaret Frisken, Ricky Ashworth and Diana Harper.

> Golf By Damian George Picton has taken out the Marlborough Women’s Pennant Matchplay Trophy for the first time in nearly 30 years following a clean sweep of Rarangi in the final round recently. Having led the tournament since a first round 10-2 victory over Blenheim in Kaikoura in May, the Picton side sealed the trophy with a convincing 12-0 win in Awatere on July 18. It marked the first time Picton

had won the six-team tournament since 1983, and just the second time it has triumphed since it last won in 1962. The tournament, also featuring Awatere, Marlborough and Kaikoura, sees teams square off against each of the other teams over five rounds. Two points are awarded for a win, and one for a tie. Ricky Ashworth, who played in all five rounds for Picton, says she was “gobsmacked” to learn how long it had been since her team last won the trophy. “I knew it had been some time

[since Picton won] but I wasn’t sure exactly how long until we saw the trophy,” she says. Picton’s other results included a 5-7 loss to Awatere in Blenheim, a 10-2 win over Marlborough in Rarangi and a 9-3 victory over Kaikoura in Marlborough. It will now go on to contest the Tasman District Pennant Final, including teams from Central Nelson, Northern Nelson and Buller-West Coast, in Karamea on August 29 and 30. Scores: Picton 46; Awatere, Marlborough 29; Blenheim 27; Rarangi 25; Kaikoura 24.

Reunited pair taste trans-Tasman success > rowinG By Damian George Trans-Tasman youth champions Georgia Hammond and Sophie Mackenzie were only reunited by their coach a few months ago after being split up for picking up each other’s ‘bad habits’. The time apart had obviously served the Blenheim rowers well, as they combined to romp to a convincing 17-second lightweight double sculls victory at the under-21 Youth Cup Regatta in Penrith, Australia, recently. Both rowers were also part of the winning New Zealand lightweight quad and eight crews, giving them a clean sweep over

their Australian rivals. Sophie says the pair had previously rowed together in the pairs event for more than four years before being separated. “We were copying each other’s bad habits – things like incorrect leg drive and breaking arms,” she says. “[Being split up] was probably good for us.” Cold conditions contributed to slow race times in the doubles event, while gusty winds made for a difficult race in the eight, Georgia says. New Zealand finished in 7 minutes, 50 seconds in the latter – well over a minute below their best time.

There were no such problems in the quad event, won by New Zealand by 13 seconds. Georgia says the New Zealand side exceeded its expectations over the three days. “We wanted to win them all, but we didn’t expect to win by so much.” Sophie and Georgia now turn their attention to RPC [regional high performance centre] trials in September, before starting preparation for the national rowing championships on Lake Karapiro in February next year. Marlborough also produced another gold medallist at the regatta, with Hannah sloan the cox of New Zealand’s eight crew.

England are number one, like it or not The England test cricket side is undoubtedly the best in the world today. The world’s number two ranked side took an unbeatable 2-0 lead yesterday in their bid to knock their rivals, India, off the number one spot. Judging by their two performances so far, it seems only a matter of time before England, who needs to win the four-test series by two clear matches to go number one, achieve that feat. And it would be impossible to argue with that ranking. This England side, fresh off a demolition of Australia in the Ashes series last summer and a 1-0 victory over Sri Lanka recently, has all the hallmarks of previous great

test sides. Its top order all average nearly 50, its pace attack is balanced and ruthless, it has a world-class spinner, and possesses a seemingly innocuous tail which rescues it from potentially dire situations. The latter was demonstrated in this last test when tail-ender Stuart Broad made 64 to rescue his side from a top order collapse to get it through to 221. He then took five wickets for no runs as England, staring down the barrel of a huge first innings deficit, turned the match on its head before winning by 319 runs. In the previous match, it was wicket-keeper Matt Prior, along with Broad, who saved England from a similar situation and set up

Damian George

another massive win. Such st ubbor n, a n noying performances are reminiscent of the great Adam Gilchrist and co in Australia’s all-conquering side of recent times; just when you think you’ve got them, they counter. Its bowling attack contains arguably the finest swing bowler in world cricket, while Tim Bresnan and Stuart Broad can produce hostile spells. Its batting order, led by the run-guzzling Alistair Cook and supported by the likes of Andrew Strauss, Keven Pietersen and Ian Bell, has simply batted sides into submission. England is clearly number one. All that remains is for the rankings to confirm it.

Family business here to stay

Harold drives in style

By Celeste Lodewyk A family owned and operated business which faced closure recently has re-emerged under new ownership. Trendez Fashions in Blenheim has been purchased by Lisa and Matt Duncan, keeping the business in the family. Lisa is the niece of original owner Shelley Musgrove and her sister Coral Mason who sold the business back to Shelley 10 months ago. When it was announced that the business would close on Sunday July 31, Trendez employees were

inundated with support from customers. “We were so surprised by all the feedback we received, so we are glad that the business is staying,” Lisa says. Shelley, who is based in Christchurch planned to close the business as the building it occupied was on the market. Staff members were given their notice but thanks to successful negotiations over a new lease, Lisa and her husband seized the opportunity to buy into the family business.

“Matt and I had initially talked about purchasing the business a year ago so it was definitely on the cards,” she says. There are two Trendez Fashions stores in the north island and four in the south island, all owned by various members of Shelley’s family. Trendez Fashions was opened in Blenheim by Shelley in Bythell Place before it moved to the corner of Scott Street and Maxwell Road (currently Euro Fashions). Coral then purchased the business and later moved to its current premises on Market Street.

By Celeste Lodewyk Life Education Trust giraffe Harold and educator Genevieve MacDonald will be driving in style thanks to Blenheim Toyota for supplying a new vehicle. Blenheim Toyota has been supporting the Trust since its establishment in Marlborough in 2005 by supplying a vehicle to educators. Genevieve collected the 2008 Toyota Corolla GX last Wednesday. “The community benefits from the work of the Trust

just as much as the schools do so we are proud to support them,” Blenheim Toyota sales manager Scott McDermid says. The Life Education Trust runs a mobile classroom to 99 percent of Marlborough schools as well as schools in the Hurunui, teaching primary-aged children about how their bodies work and the benefits of good food. “We want our kids to be the best they can be and appreciate Blenheim Toyota’s support in this goal,” Genevieve says.
