Vineyard auction In tune Michael Ruffell was one of the four boys who stole the show at Stars in Your Eyes last Friday.

Promoted as liquidation sales by Bayleys Real Estate the two vineyards owned by Mr Dew’s River Farm Wines and River Farm Holdings Companies were sold at auction on Friday. The property at 111 Ben Morven Rd with 9 ha including a three bedroom residence, sold for $1million. This property was purchased for $1.65

million in August 2007. The second property at 36 Godfrey Rd with 9.2 ha including a cellar door and a 2 bedroom residence sold for $1.2 million. This property was purchased in 2009 for $2.48 million. Two other properties were also auctioned on Friday, one at 440 Brancott Rd was passed in at $450k but later sold for more

than $700k and a fourth property near Koromiko at 21 Para Rd sold for $575K. John Hoare from Bayleys told the Sun the ‘banks’ were certainly lending to customers and the market had started to improve. He said the $100,000K plus per planted hectare was the current market vineyard price.

Black Sticks come to town By Robbie Parkes Young Marlborough hockey players got to meet some of their heroes down at the local turf yesterday and wish them luck before the London Olympics. Children from schools all around Marlborough made their way to College Park after school to play a bit of hockey and meet Black Sticks Anita Punt and Petrea Webster. Both were signing autographs and felt it was a really great thing to be doing. “It’s really good, you can give back to people,” said Anita. For Anita, it meant a lot coming to Marlborough as she’s from Nelson originally. She said for the smaller provinces like Blenheim it really is great, they really do appreciate it here. “It’s just crazy to think they’re all going to be watching us.” “You realise you’re actually someone, and people look up to you.” She said it’s awesome to be giving back and to see how excited the young kids get when they see you, and to get that support is great. Anita and Petrea said this they had this kind of thing when they started but it’s a bit more personal. “It’s a little bit more intimate, you actually get to Black Sticks Anita Punt (left) and Petrea Webster with Coco Kennard and Kayla Coyne of Rapaura School. talk to them,” said Petrea. Around 1000 people went along to the Expo which was held at the Marlborough Convention Centre, a number which pleased organisers.

“We had a lot of positive feedback from stall holders and the public, so overall it was a great success and everyone who came along seemed to really enjoy themselves,” says Expo co-ordinator Hetty Kirby. There were around 45 exhibitor sites ranging from retail products, finance services, childhood education plus much more.

This year’s Expo, which was the fourth run in Marlborough featured a silent auction which encouraged people to stay longer, says Hetty. “We had a lot of people staying until the end which was great, and everyone enjoyed the auction, raffles and spot prizes which run throughout the day. “This is our major fundraiser for the year and the funds raised go a

Doctor helps young quartet

inbrief

By Annabelle Latz Their voices harmonise to sound as one. The successful road is happening quicker than expected for this Marlborough Boys’ College quartet. Fella Voce, who recently won Marlborough’s Stars in Your Eyes competition, is gearing up for the Young Singers in Harmony Competition final in Auckland in September. Michael Ruffell (tenor), Piers Dashfield (bass), Hadley Anderson (baritone), and Max Bicknell (tenor), described themselves as the ‘underdogs’ at Regional Finals in Wellington last week, but finished in the top six to earn them a place at Auckland’s final. “It will be great to go to Auckland and do our best, the first

Marlborough District Council will be undertaking its annual resident satisfaction telephone survey in June. year is all about learning,” said Michael. They have had great overall help and inspiration from the College’s music teacher Con O’Brien, and specific barbershop training from Blenheim’s Dr Nick Hassan. “We can’t praise Nick enough, it wouldn’t have happened without him. And without Con we wouldn’t have got started,” said Max. Hadley said the biggest challenge singing unaccompanied has been a great learning experience. Con said their attitude has been fantastic; they are involved in many aspects of school life. “They do one hundred million things. When you are at a boys’ school the focus is on sport more,

so to have singing when guys can listen and enjoy – that’s good,” he said. Piers said Hadley’s mum Jo has been a huge support with everything, and their success to date has been a team effort. “Basically, everything that has gone on behind the scenes is Jo,” said Piers.

Nick has loved every minute of working with the singers. “The boys are like sponges for information, talented, and keen to learn.” Nick has been a barbershop singer for 16 years, and said he is constantly learning. See Stars in Your Eyes review Page 22

Rugby boys advocate Men’s Health Week By Robbie Parkes

It’s always a struggle to get men to ask for medical advice, but this week is all about bringing about discussion and getting the locals involved. On Tuesday a number of boys from Marlborough Boys’ Rugby Academy got involved and helped deliver the message for Men’s Health Week which runs from the 11th to the 17th of June. Adam Smith along with some of his teammates handed out vouchers for a free sausage sizzle in the Market St forum while promoting Men’s Health Week at the same time. “We didn’t know much about it up until now.” We’re young and trying to keep fit and healthy, he said, and promoting it with these guys is great. Even some of the Tasman Makos will be helping out with a few events in the week. Te Ra Morris is the Hauora Tane coordinator for Te Hauora O Ngati Rarua, one of many organisation involved in promoting Men’s Health Week here in Marlborough. Ra said the aim for this year is to really cement it in the annual calendar and get the messages

through to offices and households. “A week’s concentration is what we’re doing at the moment,” said Ra. “Primarily it’s our older men that we’re aiming at to get these (messages) to, to bring about change.” “We want high profile people at a national level, smaller profile people on a local level,” said Hauora contracts manager Joe Puketapu. It’s about local men teaching each other, and not just about getting the big names to endorse them. “We think it’s important to make sure the community experience and voice is heard,” said Joe. “The message that we want to get out there, is men, we want you to be well.” He said that men need to get checkups, have their prostate checked, and make regular visits to the doctor. “I think it’s a combination approach where the young and the elderly work and coincide with each other.” It’s about sitting down and talking, he said. “The biggest challenge is going to be able to Bevan moody (left) and Jarome leonard working the grill on tuesday for men's Health Week. keep the momentum going” said Joe.

By Robbie Parkes A bit of exposure goes a long way, but getting a mention in an international travel guide and being named best restaurant in Marlborough certainly boosts the Hotel d’Urville name. WildTomato magazine has named the restaurant as the best in the region in their 2012 Dine Out awards. “It’s a pretty recognised magazine in the local area and it means a lot to us,” said owner Chris Birks. “The best restaurant, it’s not something to be scoffed at.” Chris got the news a month ago, but it was embargoed until now. However something he didn’t know of was a mention in American author, Patricia Schultz’s 1,000 Places to

See Before You Die. “You just don’t know, they don’t invite you to participate.” “To get that sort of exposure for a little town like us, it’s pretty good.” The book states: “...It is the welcoming downstairs bar and smart, always-abuzz restaurant that makes this an all-around great pick.” “You can’t really put a dollar value on it, it’s worth a lot to get worldwide exposure,” said Chris. They’ve even had a mention in one of the English Sunday papers. “Unbeknown to us, they did a write up,” he said. Chris has had the restaurant for the past six years, but has been in the accommodation industry for the last 35 years. He said to get these kinds of mentions really boils down to a few important things. “The standard of our food has got to be beyond reproach really.”

Chris Birks, owner of Hotel d'Urville

Their chef Maree, concentrates on local produce as much as she can, said Chris. The ambience is also a key factor he said. “I think the ambience is set here by the building itself,” he said. The dark native timbers, the high ceilings and chandeliers add to it all. “It’s the only place like it in Blenheim.”

“We strive to be the best and do our best.” Chris said they take pride in the setting, making people comfortable and the level of service they offer. “Obviously we want them (customers) to enjoy the experience here and go away happy, like everybody in this industry we don’t achieve that 100% all the time, but certainly try to meet customer expectations.”

Historical cemetery project making progress A major obstacle in the continuing development and beautification of the Upper Wairau Cemetery has been overcome. In the last few months, the trustees of the historic cemetery have been installing a well, pump and running irrigation lines out to the specimen trees and shelterbelts that have been planted there in recent years, “We now have an effective water supply to the cemetery which is a major asset to our landscaping plans and the day to day maintenance of the cemetery,” says chairman Jeff Hammond. The cemetery is administered and maintained by a small but active group of volun-

teers known as the Upper Wairau Cemetery Trust. The work is funded entirely by plot reservations and burial fees, with occasional grants for special projects, like landscaping. Controlling weeds, planting trees and spring bulbs, and most recently restoring many of the older plots and headstones have taken many volunteer hours and are ongoing. “We continue to get great feedback as to how good the cemetery is looking,” said Jeff. The Trust is now working towards creating an ashes interment area which started with the planting of a flowering cherry tree three A working bee by trustees of the Upper Wairau Cemetery in progress, from left: James Kay on tractor, Myles Emanuel, Cynthia Brooks, Jeff Hammond, Chris Kay and Linton years ago. Charges impact transport operators By Robbie Parkes With the new Road User Charges (RUC) system coming into play in August, transport businesses are uneasy about the changes. The changes are part of the Road User Charges Act 2012. The new system means that heavy vehicles will be charged on maximum legal carrying capacity and axle configuration rather than the vehicle’s dead weight. CRB Transport owner Mike Gifford said the changes are essentially leveling the playing field for them. “We’ve been overpaying for our road user charges and some people have been underpaying.” That’s what it’s trying to solve, he said. But, the charges still have an extremely adverse effect on his business. CRB Transport works in the logging sector, hauling heavy loads all around the area. “We run the maximum (road weight) of 44 tonnes all the time,” he said. Their trucks are stickered at 24 tonnes and the trailers are 22 tonnes (when full) which equals 46 tonnes. The new system means that Mike’s trucks will be paying for the 46 tonne maximum legal carrying capacity even when the trailer is empty. “We’ve always felt that’s been unfair.” It costs Mike 76 cents per kilometre travelled and so his road user charge hits $63,000 a month and $750,000 a year for 19 trucks.

“That’s a fair chunk.” And the infringement fees for not having it correct are huge, he said. It can cost upwards of $1500 for just being a bit over the weight limit. “We don’t set out to overload but it’s the nature of the business,” He said that nearly 76% of New Zealand’s general freight is carried by road trucks. “We believe as an industry that the road user charges should be abolished and should go to a diesel tax.” “There’s only a couple of countries that have a road user charge.” He said the charges will be passed on as a result of the change. “We’re a highly regulated industry working on a slim margin, so we have to pass it on.” Mike said there has been a lot of discussion around the topic and there has even been talk of going on strike. The New Zealand Road Transport Association lobbies for them and has been working on it for the past three years. Mike said the public do not know enough. Fastway couriers have also protested the changes, stating that the pricing structure will unfairly affect the courier services industry because of their lighter loads. “With the new system in place, our trucks will be assessed on the same basis as heavy logging vehicles.” said New Zealand Chief Executive Bruce Speers.

Switchme launch Police inbrief RFP for business

Last Wednesday

Businesses now have the ability to significantly reduce their power bills. A trial is taking place at the moment, allowing small to medium enterprises (SME’s) to use an online tool created by Switchme.co.nz. The ‘Request for Pricing’ (RFP) Tool is the first of its kind in New Zealand, aiming to change the way businesses compare and switch energy retailers. Scott O’Donnell, Marketing Manager of Switchme, said it applies an intuitive and easy-to-use tendering model to the complex New Zealand energy market. He said it aims to increase competition in the SME energy market by offering more transparency of pricing. “The cost of energy is often overlooked by SMEs, but there are significant savings available. Our investigations show that some

(June 6)

SMEs can save 40% on their energy bill, simply by switching providers or switching plan types.” SME’s wishing to participate in the trial are encouraged to contact Switchme via their website. Following a trial of the tool in June, the RFP Tool will be launched this winter in association with the Electricity Authority’s What’s My Number campaign. Switchme is New Zealand’s most popular energy switching service. It has been providing an energy comparison service to residential customers since 2009, and has switched over 30,000 customers. For more information or if you’d like your business involved in the trial, please visit http://www.switchme.co.nz/ or call 0800 179 482.

The Sun ran an incorrect story about Michael O’Brien. The story stated that the Blenheimbased trotting trainer, “never had any intention of deceiving the Blenheimbased gambling society Bluegrass Holdings Limited.” Further on in the story it stated “he has been charged by Internal Affairs Department with making a false statement, with the intent to deceive, in relation to his involvement with Bluegrass Trust, a non-profit company.” In fact, the story should have stated that Michael has been charged in relation to his alleged involvement with the Trust, and he would “vigorously defend the charges,” as he has never had any involvement with the Trust. The Sun apologises for this mistake.

It was probably about two years ago, and I can’t remember what I went in for, I don’t really have a need to use it.

I went quite some time ago, I was searching for a particular article. But I have no need to go for books, I find audio books easier to use.

Probably about 6 months ago. I was looking at navigation books.

The last time I went would have been two years ago. I took my stepson to return a book and had a look around.

I went today actually, to get a DVD.

Must have a fishing licence in Wairau Dear Ed, I see a reply to The Marlbrough Express, re the above, by Fish and Game region manager Neil Deans, stating that any angler does not need a valid sports fishing licence. Regarding catching salmon in the Wairau during May, does that mean

that the 2012 sports fishing regulations are wrong and he is right, because the booklet says the open season for salmon is October 1 until April 30? Could you kindly ask who is correct? Cheers, a honest fisherman. Neil Wilson

Those scam phone calls Dear Ed, Those scam phone calls. They have begun again! 5.30pm the phone goes. Sounds like a Chinese lady. I pick up the phone, say our surname, quickly so no one who doesn’t know us would recognize it! I then say nothing at all. The caller almost immediately rings off. I have heard that several calls are made at the time and one of them is targeted.

Shopping experience Dear Ed, I must admit that the new look Briscoes Store is nice. The next thing they need to do is get staff trained. Last Friday I purchased a light on a stand, they did not try to sell me any light bulbs when I got home found it needed special screw type ones. Upon my return to the store and asking for the 40w bulb required I was told to take a 75w. A no-no according to manufacturers instructions. I spoke to the manager on my way out and like his assistant did not offer to order the correct light bulb for me. It is no wonder some people shop out of town. Unhappy Shopper

I phoned, I think it was Internal Affairs, and was told there is nothing anyone in New Zealand can do about it as the calls are coming from “off shore”. So – do not waste your energy! Getting angry is very stressful Just ignore it but get them to ring off first. Threatening to report them to the police is an utter waste of time – they know we can do nothing! Prank calls Dear Ed, In response to the article in the Sun on Wednesday, June 6 titled ‘Prank calls continue’, I used to receive these phone calls as well. After reading an article on the internet talking about how to deal with these prank calls, I learnt a handy tip.

When they phone, hit the hash key eight times in quick succession. That deletes your number from their memory bank. It’s a well known fact. Since we did it we never received the same call again. Aquarius

Local war nurse By Annabelle Latz It will be 70 years this Saturday since Elsie Simpson joined the nursing staff at Blenheim’s military hospital. “I started on my 21st birthday,” said Elsie, (nee McKay). In 1942 she started her year at M a rlb o r o ug h C ol lege, (n ow Marlborough Boys’ College), looking after wounded and sick New Zealand military members. Born and bred in Havelock, after finishing school Elsie attended nursing college in Greymouth, and was then called back to Blenheim in 1942. “There weren’t really a lot of patient injuries, but there was a lot of flu

around, and the living conditions weren’t that good.” Elsie was boarding on Arthur St during that year. She remembers the rationing of food. “It was hard on lots of people. I still have some of my ration coupons.” Elsie joined the Air Force in 1943, as a nurse based in Nelson. She left at the end of 1944. In 1945 she married Leo Simpson, who she met at school. They lived in Blenheim and had three children. Elsie, 91 years-old this Saturday, still lives in Blenheim.

Tow the water line By Annabelle Latz The communities of Picton, Renwick and Havelock will soon be asked their views on the introduction of water meters as the Marlborough District Council explores this option as a way of addressing water supply challenges in the three centres. Assets and Services Manager Mark Wheeler said water metering is primarily a tool to encourage efficient water use; and it helps people to understand how much water they’re using. Council’s Planning and Development Engineer Stuart Donaldson said each of the smaller centres has had its own challenges maintaining good water supply, with water restrictions imposed as necessary. Currently, Council water meters are in place for the Awatere, Wairau Valley and the Riverlands industrial

®

estate as well as for commercial water users in Blenheim, Picton, Havelock and Renwick. A community consultation round, including public meetings, will begin from next month and is expected to continue into next year, leading into the 2013/14 Annual Plan process. Lara Bright, teacher aid at Renwick School, who teaches the edible gardens programme as part Enviroschools, said water meters would be a good move, from an environmental point of view. She said having to pay for water would encourage people to think more about what they use it for. For example, a garden hose uses 800 litres water/hour, a bath takes 120180L, and a shower uses 15L/minute. “It might encourage people to tow the line a wee bit,” she said.

Local musician Sarah Brown (below) pulled a good crowd to The Secret Garden Café last Thursday evening. She treated the group of about 100 to a tender selection of songs from her new album, ‘The Great Heart Robbery.’ Recorded in Sydney, this album features the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, as well as her five piece band. It was produced by Tim Buchen, who has also produced for Gin Wigmore. Described as a mix of gypsy blues styled music, Sarah’s new album is a great successor to her debut self-titled album which was released in 2006.

Thrill of the hunt

Hunting has been a sport enjoyed by generations of Kiwi’s, something familiar to local man Matt Willis, as Celeste Lodewyk finds out. Standing quietly on the ridge line, waiting, listening. Then all of a sudden, piercing through nature’s silence comes the urgent barking from the hunter’s dog, blended with the defiant squeals of an angry boar. The hunt is on! Matt began hunting from an early age and went on to forge not only a lifelong passion for the ‘sport’, but also helped to create one of New Zealand’s largest pig hunting competitions as well as launching his own hunting magazine. Hooked on Boars first hit magazine stands nearly five years ago and has quickly grown in both popularity and distribution. In addition to Matt’s success, the Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp made its debut in 2010, attracting hundreds of hunters from all over the country.

This year will be its third, entries have just opened and it will take place on July 6, 7 and 8 and is being hosted by the “great people” at Woodbourne Tavern. Looking back to where it all started, Matt credits family members and classic NZ hunting books for igniting his interest for hunting. “My hunting influence came from my Uncle David Western and family friend Michael O’Connor in my early days. “From there it was my love for reading which led me to authors such as Ken Cuthbertson who was famous for ‘Two Dogs and a Rifle’, as well as early books written about the venison industry in NZ,” he says. Matt’s first job out of school was at a hunting shop in Blenheim called Shooting Scene owned by John Bradshaw. That business has since been superseded by Don Hansen and his local Hunting & Fishing franchise. “As much as I enjoyed the job, working indoors wasn’t for me and the forestry industry soon beckoned,” he says. Matt’s next few years were spent

working in forestry gangs and at the local freezing works until the opportunity came to take on his own silverculture contract. “I was offered a planting contract in the Awatere for Bary Griffiths, I took it and never looked back. “I’ve been a contractor for 19 years now operating Matt Willis Forestry Contracting Ltd,” he says. This provided the perfect platform for Matt to continue with his hunting. “Forestry and hunting went hand in hand and many of my employees and fellow workers have also been keen hunters, so we have had some awesome times chasing pigs, shooting deer in the roar and bow hunting all manner of game.” One aspect of forestry work which was less attractive was of course the downtime with bad weather. It was these days which Matt decided to use to create Hooked on Boars. The rapid success of the maga-

zine soon spurred the Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp to be born thanks to the encouragement from Howie Morrison Junior of Hunting Aotearoa. “Howie suggested that my wife Lisa and I got this competition up and running, and thanks to the support of Lisa and our three boys, it’s been a great success,” he says. Last year’s competition saw 582 entries received from all over NZ and 148 boars weighed in, a number Matt thinks could grow each year. “We have some of the best pig hunting between Nelson and Marlborough so there’s no reason we can’t top last years numbers,” he says. The Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp is proudly supported by the following core sponsors. Hooked on Boars Magazine, Blenheim Toyota, Marlborough Hunting & Fishing, Stoney Creek, Matthews Trophy Hunting, Silverline, Transport Products, Champ Max, the Woodbourne Tavern and Stihl Chainsaws. Entries for the competition are now available on the Hooked on Boars website, at Marlborough Hunting & Fishing and at the Woodbourne Tavern. More about the competition will feature in this week’s Friday Sun.

Careers Evening

Careers a hot topic

Your career choice, find out more.

Determining which career path to tread is a hot topic, no matter who you are. Choosing your career path also means choosing how you spend your life, and something that successful people have discovered is that ‘the journey itself is just as important as the end goal’. O n e q u e s t io n m a ny Marlborough secondary students and members of the community may be asking themselves is this. “How do I know I have chosen the right career path for me?” One of the best ways to answer this question is to speak to an education provider related to that career, and what better opportunity to do this than the Marlborough Careers Evening being held on June 18.

The Marlborough Boys’ College is again hosting this event at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 from 7pm -9pm. This Careers Evening is not just aimed at academic students choosing a university, but it is for everyone seeking opportunities to find out more about training, apprenticeships and Polytechnic courses. MBC Careers and Transition manager Peter Kemp strongly encourages parents to bring their sons and daughters along. “Use this opportunity to have some quality time talking about the future and the wide range of options available. “Courses and training have become more ex-

The careers evening on June 18 will provide a huge range of training opportunities with some of the country’s leading institutions. Some courses provide training across an industry while some are very focussed like the new courses in Christchurch to study Electronics and contribute to the rebuild. While some courses are available in Blenheim, most of the advanced courses require students to move to a bigger centre. This brings up the issue of accommodation, its availability and cost. Course providers are well aware of this and can provide advice, while universities and some Polytechnics have their own student accommodation. The Careers Evening is a really valuable opportunity to find out the important information to make a good decision for the future.

Andrea Adams of Travel, Careers and Training (left) pictured with Marlborough Boys’ College staff member Claire Matthews says the Marlborough Careers Evening is the best careers expo that she attends throughout New Zealand. Organisers say judging by past success, this year’s Careers Evening is looking to be another successful event. pensive and it is getting more and more important to research carefully and make sure money is well spent and debt manageable. “By the time they are 40 years old they will on average have had 10-14 jobs and moved four or five times, so they need to be prepared

By Annabelle Latz A major fundraiser for Marlborough St John will bring motorbike enthusiasts from all over the district to Picton and Blenheim this weekend. The Marlborough Ulysses Ambulance Run is happening, where about 200 riders usually gather for the annual fundraising event, alternating their efforts each year between St John and Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The ride from Picton to Blenheim, usually raising about $2000, is popular every year. “It’s a really good turnout,” said Ulysses rider Jo de Reeper. She loves the freedom of motorbike riding. Her husband Allan will also be riding on

Sunday with Ulysses. He said riding a motorbike brings pleasure to a journey, and it is not all about the destination. Rebecca Lee, operation and team manager for Marlborough St John, said the money raised will go towards a new mannequin, which will help upskill and train existing and new staff and volunteers. Marlborough St John eventually wants to buy a mannequin worth between $10, 000 and $20,000, which will take ongoing fundraising efforts. There are about 50 people in the area involved in St John, but District Chairman for Nelson/Marlborough St John said they are always looking for more. He said St John is not just about ambulances, but also about youth programmes,

s e c i v r e s l a t i v Support St John is a registered charity which relies on the generosity of New Zealanders to fund its caring and health-related services. Last year St John attended over 336,000 emergency incidents and treated and transported more than 396,000 patients – that’s 6.6% more than the previous year. They at work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year caring for communities, helping people in medical and accident emergencies, and relieving sickness and injury. This year St John needs 46 new ambulances to keep up with this ever growing demand and because St John is a charity, it relies on donations to provide many of its services. With your support St John can continue to provide the following: - St John Ambulance Service, which operates 24/7 and helps around 400,000 New Zealanders every year. - St John Youth programmes, to teach young people first aid, health care and leadership skills. - Health Shuttles, to help people with health or mobility problems get to their appointments. - Caring Caller, to provide a

friendship service to those in need. - Friends of the Emergency Department, to give comfort to patients in hospital. - Safe Kids school programme, teaching children about first aid and give them confidence to use the 111 system. - Area committee volunteers, helping to support the work of St John in your community. To donate: Remember, donations of $5 or more may quality for a tax rebate. - Become a fundraiser for St John. There are many ways to raise money for St John. - Donate items or provide funds for a specific piece of equipment. - Request donations to St John instead of flowers at a funeral. - Leave a bequest through your Will. - Join the St John Supporter Scheme. - Donate through your pay. Keep it Local

Wednesday June 13, 2012

17

Here at The Sun we pride ourselves on supporting our local community. That’s why we’re running our ‘Keep it Local’ campaign once a month promoting locally owned businesses. The last year has been a challenging time for most businesses. There has never been a more important time to shop locally, putting your money back into your community. So support your local businesses and ‘Keep it Local’

Elite Tyre & Alignment

One Blenheim family business that knows the importance of being locally owned and operated is Elite Tyre & Alignment. The father and son team, Dave and Brendan Gill have been operating at their Grove Road premises for nearly two years and say a large portion of their business comes from customer referrals. “We have regular referrals from previous customers, some even from as far as Christchurch.” “Customers are often surprised at how quickly we have their vehicle ready. With over 50 years experience between us and over five years working together, we instinctively know exactly what the other is doing.

“It brings people back and it’s this support that is making our business a success,” Dave says. Being an independent tyre business with no franchise fees and restrictions, Elite Tyre & Alignment can source any brand and quantity of tyre. “We have one of the widest ranges so we can source the right tyre to fit the driver and the vehicle,” Brendan says. Their services include new and used tyres, tyre repair, wheel balance, computerized wheel alignment on car, 4x4, and commercial vehicles as well as stocking a range of Exide batteries and offering free battery and tyre pressure checks.

Deans Lifting Services

Deans Lifting Services Ltd is a local company which has forged a reputation for offering a dedicated and professional service throughout Marlborough and New Zealand. The company was purchased in 2003 by Arthur and Erica Dean which at the time, was operating with one truck. Over the past nine years the company has expanded to incorporate a modern Nissan fleet and a number of certified crane operators and overdimension load pilots. “Our business is only as good as our staff, and they are excellent. “Staff has earned a reputation for having the ability to carry

over dimension loads, and we are blessed to have three class-one pilot drivers for these loads,” Arthur says. The team at Deans Lifting Services Ltd are ready to tackle any project, big or small and they can lift and transport anywhere in NZ. These include concrete panels for construction sites (pictured), stainless steel tanks, steel constructions and other items such as pianos and large furniture. The company is also an agent for CSL containers which can be used for a range of application including storage, staff rooms and offices, and its cranes range from 22 to 47 tonne metre.

It had hoped to raise that figure by Sunday but so far only $51,700 has been donated. The plan is for Mila, an ex-circus elephant, to be transported to a US sanctuary so she can live with other African elephants.

Marlborough Boys College quartet steal show By Les Whiteside Stars in Your Eyes on Friday night again showcased the quality of talent in Marlborough. The 300 plus guests at the sold out Spring Creek District Lions Club fundraiser were fortunate to see some very good performances. Pumping along By Annabelle Latz The Rarangi pump track is the first of its kind in Marlborough. Track designer Damian Stones has been designing these tracks for a few years, and is based in Motueka. “It’s all about getting families on bikes,” he said. The track, located behind the playground at Rarangi, has continuous bumps and turns, and is suited for all abilities and ages. This pump track can be ridden in both directions, pushing off the bumps and around the banked corners. “The idea is not to pedal, but to pump your way around the track, and the challenge is for everyone.” The pump track was officially opened on Sunday, but has been in use since the beginning of May. Damian said it has been a great project between Rarangi District Residents Association, Marlborough District Council and Department of Conservation. A $10,000 grant from the council helped fund the project; the 1100 metre track used 300m3 of gravel and clay, and took five days to build. Damian said this could be the first of more pump tracks in the area.

“It’s easy and accessible. Hopefully the positive things happening here can be replicated.” Dakoda Jones, 12, from Rarangi, said the track is really cool, and there is a trick to getting around without pedalling. “When you get to one of these bumps you have to lean forward, and then lean back after.” Bev Doole, president of Rarangi District Residents Association, said it was a great community project, headed mainly by Rarangi residents’ pump track project manager Sarah Gray. “The original thought was to have a long trail, but the pump track is great for skills and development.”

Dakoda Jones gives the new pump track at rarangi a go.

In oar of Masters - locals win four trophies By Annabelle Latz The Blenheim Masters rowers returned from their regatta in Canterbury with smiles on their faces. They won 11 events and four trophies at the South Island Masters Rowing Championships at Queen’s Birthday at Lake Hood. Manager/coach of the Blenheim crew Mouse Taylor, nine rowers and one cox won Overall Top Club for most points, the Women’s Single Scull, Top Womens Double and Womens Four. Teams from all over New Zealand attended the weekend. “You meet so many people, and the friendships stay,” said Mouse.

He said it has been a great build up to the competition. “They have all been keen, doing a lot of work in the water.” Mouse said Masters grade, involving rowers aged 27 and upwards, provides a chance for athletes to start at a later age, or return to a sport they may have done in earlier years. “I’ve been involved in rowing since 1969,” said Mouse, aged 55. The weather was excellent on the Saturday, but rain and wind on the Sunday sent the competition indoors for a while. “It’s probably the best sport I have ever been involved in.”

Picton Masters Rowers had five competitors at the regatta, with Anne McNicoll winning her Single. Picton Masters Rower Neil Campbell, 53, said it was a great competition, especially because it catered for Novice rowers. “There are classes for people who have never competed in their life.” Andrew Johns, who won the Men’s Novice Single, took up rowing this season. Neil, who started rowing at age 25, said the non-impacting nature of rowing means it appeals to many age groups. “It’s not all about competing, it’s all about being involved.”

Volleyball results Last Thursday night Marlborough Volleyball’s FairWeathers’ Senior Winter League got underway. Having almost reached the threequarter mark in the competition there are just two weeks of round-robin play left before finals on 28th June. In the President’s grade the first game of the evening saw second and third ranked teams Clippers versus Cri Clovers on court. Clippers won the game with two sets, 26-24, 25-22, 20-25. Treefellas increased their points tally by three last Thursday with a sound display over Can’t Touch This who lost out 25-11, 25-15 and 25-15. In the final game for the grade Magnum came up against Kinoaths with Magnum winning the game 3 sets to nil, 25-20, 25-14 and 25-2. In C grade, Smashed ‘Em Bro played Safe Crackers, winning with two sets, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-18.
