Fiery wake up By Annabelle Latz Nigel Morrison was enjoying a sleep in on Sunday morning when he heard the fire alarm sound. “My son was milking the cows that morning, and my first thought was ‘What has broken at the cow sheds!?’ But it was the wake up call for one of the biggest jobs of his fire fighting career. Nigel, Chief Rural Fire Officer at Link Water,

has been fighting fires for 42 years. It was an 11 kilometre drive to Rellings Bay, where he and his crew from Link Water met up with the crew from Picton, and were soon joined by crews from Havelock, Blenheim, Renwick, and Rarangi. They were faced with a bach off the Queen Charlotte Drive near Picton, that had lost a battle to the flames that had engulfed it a short time earlier that morning.

The crews went to work quickly, and had water pumping equipment in the sea 100m below, pumping water up to the bach and surrounding scrub that was also in flames, just 10 minutes later. “It was really great what they did.” It was dark, the crews were flat out controlling the flames, when just a few minutes later another bach just a few metres away began to glow, then went up in flames. Pumpkin mystery solved By Annabelle Latz There may be more to the humble pumpkin than meets the eye. Gordy McCallum may be closer to finding the answer to his mystery. Last week he came into The Sun with a pumpkin he had grown, which he described as tastier than an ordinary pumpkin, with its thick darker flesh, and ‘funny shape.’ Colin Debenham from Ngakuta Bay rang The Sun last week, and wanted to pass on a message to Gordon. “It’s called Musque De Provence, it is sold at French farmers’ markets as wedges,” he said. Colin said the translated name is the Southern French Heirloom Pumpkin. He traced the name by looking in the King Seeds book. “I’d like to get a seed or two off him,” said Colin. Hugh Buckley from Levin

emailed The Sun, also believing it was Musque De Provence. “This is an old time pumpkin from France. Its fine grained flesh is well suited for pies. It makes great soup due to its bright orange coloured flesh,” he wrote. On Monday morning another knowledgeable pumpkin producer visited The Sun’s front desk. The man said Gordy’s pumpkin is a Queensland Blue Orange Squash. Gordy was happy to hear the news that his mystery may be closer to being solved. He wrote down the two names, and the name of the seed book, and was looking forward to finding some information of his own. “I’ll get on the computer, and see if I can find some books at the library. That’ll keep me out of trouble for a while, won’t it?” MYSTERY SOLVED: Gordon McCallum holds his Musque De Provence pumpkin.

Skating for success Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Until recently, the Renwick Skate Park has mainly attracted trouble. It was a spot where bored youths spent time breaking bottles and tagging. This has now changed. Since the formation of The Renwick Skate Club in recent weeks by a group of Renwick mums, the park has been cleaned, and much needed maintenance has been carried out. Mel Howse, Andrea Cook and Keita McCormick all have children who now use the skate park often. The Back Flip competition, being held this Sunday at the park, has been organised by these mums, and was a timely incentive to form a working group to clean up the facility. The tidy up has meant loitering and vandalism.

“It’s just been a positive roll on effect, it is a safer place to be,” said Keita. She notices families from Blenhiem at the park too, because of the great open space. “This is what it’s all about, to enjoy the park.” In preparation for this week’s event, the weeds have been cleaned up, chipped concrete on the park has been tidied up, lights have been fixed and the fence bordering the park has been mended. “Everyone has just jumped on board.” Paul Guile is secretary of the Renwick Grounds Committee; in charge of the almost nine hectare facility, which is also used for tennis, marching, bowling, rugby, soccer, cricket, Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade, and a car park. Paul is in full support of the new club. “We are really happy there’s a group that is

There were three suspicious fires at Whenuanui Bay, (Becks Bay) in the Marlborough Sounds at about 5am on Sunday. Two baches and one garage were extensively damaged. taking such a strong interest.” Paul said a group was formed a few years ago, but a lack of interest in the skate park meant it petered out. He said it is great now, with more adult presence and more use of the park in general, causing a decrease in troublesome behaviour. “It’s not nearly as bad now.” Marlborough District Council provides the Committee with an annual maintenance grant of $56,000, plus GST, to look after the area; one of the biggest sports fields in Marlborough. The next big project for the area will be getting the gravel area in front of the park sealed. That is estimated to cost about $130,000, so will need some fundraising efforts. Continued on page 6.

Music concert for young artists

Blenheim singer-songwriter Anneka Thwaites will be performing at Tempo's Kiwi Music Night on May 25.

By Robbie Parkes With New Zealand Music month well underway, Tempo will be holding their very own Kiwi Music Night for young up and comers to perform in. Tempo stands for Today’s Emerging Musicians Performing Onstage and organises concerts every month. May, being New Zealand music month means a bigger concert than usual as young and local Kiwi musicians have the opportunity to perform some classic Kiwiana on stage. Blenheim artist, Anneka Thwaites is the special guest for the night and she knows all too well how the Tempo concerts operate. “I used to go and do all those things too when I was growing up,” she said. Anneka started out playing the piano but moved towards guitar in her teens, eventually emerging as a singer-songwriter. She released her debut album In The Pink in 2008 and is making steps to record her second album. She said that her start in Tempo really helped

her, and to perform at that young age is key. “It’s so much harder as an adult to get on stage and perform,” she said. “Most of our really good artists have started from a young age.” The concert is aimed at all ages, but especially young kids who want to try their stuff and have a go, she said. “It’s just a platform really for interested kids to get up and perform,” she said. Anneka found inspiration at the concert when she was young after seeing a cellist come to perform. “Just amazing, inspired me to go along and try it out too,” she said. She wants to inspire young musicians herself and said for them to get out there and give it a go is the biggest step, but it is worth it. Young musicians are encouraged to come and perform on the night. The concert is at 7pm at the Wesley Centre on Friday May 25. The cost is $2 per person or $5 per family.

By Robbie Parkes The stage version of ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ has performed on the likes of Broadway, but for Blenheim, the more downscale and ‘budget’ performance has given it profile. “Plastic bags, recycled toilet brushes, it’s very comical, off the wall,” said Neville Patchett, stage director and the shows marketing person. Fiery wakeup call Continued from page 1. By Annabelle Latz “It was pretty unnerving when the second one went up, there was lots of crackling and banging.” There were up to seven fire appliances at the scene at the height of the activity. “When the second fire went up we had more reinforcements.” The crews managed to save much of the second bach, but Nigel still described it as a mess. “It looks like the fire was started

in the lounge room.” When the garage up by the road, 15 metres away, went up in flames, just two fire fighters were on the hose and pump to douse the flames, as most of the crew were preoccupied with the two houses and scrub. “We all worked well together. We respect each other’s brigades, and we all learn from each other.” Nigel was deeply saddened by the occurrence. He has fought many big scrub

fires in his time, but this involved peoples’ property and belongings. “It was a place these people would go to get away from everything, and now it’s gone. Just like that.” The crews were too busy putting out flames to notice any suspicious behaviour, but Nigel said there had been much speculation. After dampening everything down, sending the equipment back to Picton by boat or fire engine, Nigel said they were all home around lunch time.

To top off the morning’s events, the hot water for his shower had packed up. “It was just one of those days!” He wanted to thank the crews for the great team work. “We just did what we had to do.” Police have nearly completed examining the scene in Rellings Bay. If anyone has any information that could aid the investigation, please phone the police on 03 520 3120, or the Marlborough CIB on 03 578 5279.

Memories of Korea changed By Robbie Parkes Ernest Berry’s recollection of South Korea has been completely rewritten after returning to the country he once fought in. “We had no idea most of us, that there would be such a strong sense of gratitude from every member of the South Korean public,” he said. “From then until the time we left, there were people just lined up the way to see us.” Ernest served in Kayforce, New Zealand’s contingent of troops in the United Nations force sent to fight in the Korean War. For seven days, he and a number of other veterans stayed in Seoul where they were given medals and gifts in thanks for their service. “Every night was a banquet and every night had presentations,” he said. I try to dodge it. I tend to not go that way as it’s too dangerous.

I don’t like driving through that round-about. It’s a bit stressful and there’s too much going on with the trains and people trying to drive around the round-about.

They should divert traffic straight through Riverlands to Grovetown. It would cut down a lot of the problem and will have to happen sooner or later.

It’s difficult at times, but there isn’t really anything we can do about it. We can count ourselves lucky that there hasn’t been a serious accident.

Budget promises to help disabled Budget 2012 will make available $143.7 million over the next four years to improve the lives of people with disabilities. The disabilities sector receives the largest share of new health funding in the budget, other than DHBs. • $54.7 million for more home and community support services. • $1.3 million one-off funding for additional cochlear implants and follow-up services for adults and children in 2012/13 • $20.7 million for more help with supports like hearing aids, hoists and wheelchair access. • $57.6 million for the increasing numbers of disabled people using residential support services. • $9.4 million to give more people greater choice and control of the services they receive. This adds to the $1.035 billion the Government already spends every year in supporting disabled people including $450 million for residential care. Taxpayers also fund $224 million for disabled people living at home. This includes payments to non-family care givers.

Give up trying to educate! Dear Ed, Pedestrian and courtesy crossings have been discussed many times. Marlborough Roads may as well give up trying to educate those who don’t understand because maybe they are

the same dimwits who use the cobbled strips as pedestrian crossings, especially in Bythell Place. Yours faithfully, Clarkie

Aspiring to be a meter maid? Dear Ed, Sorry but really who would think that aspiring to be a “meter maid” at the age of 12 was really that important that an article had to be written about it. No offence to the people who do the job here in Blenheim, but the only reason Nicole James was even written about was because she parades around in a bikini!!!! Why doesn’t she get a real job that

involves wearing clothes like the rest of us in the big wide world, and save the bikinis for the beach. I would be so embarrassed if my 17 year old daughter suggested such a job that involved near nudity. Each to their own, but this does not warrant front page of the Sun, so not news worthy, maybe to her family. My opinion, Kris

Dear Ed, Now that the mid-week does not appear to be including the middle of the week television programs how about ‘Sun’ publishing Tuesday to Friday TV programmes. I’m sure it would be most appreciated. Can we also have more readers letters and do you have a petition for/or against the location for the proposed Theatre. Perhaps you could include a form to fill in with the ‘Sun’. Sincerely, Sarah MacDonald

Dear Sarah MacDonald, We do not feature weekly television programs as we are a local paper and focus on local events/stories. On the 11 May, 2011 we featured a poll on the proposed new theatre. 97% of those asked said they were for the theatre. Publisher, The Sun.

Refresher course for older drivers A free refresher course for older drivers is aiming to help overcome any confusion surrounding the new road laws changes. The Marlborough Road Safety Council do these courses about four times a year, but this one is especially important because of the new give way rules “We have noticed a hesitation in the new rules, people are unsure and it’s a matter of a lack of confidence which is perhaps natural,” said Council secretary Geoff Powell. “It’s a matter of sharpening up on the rules,” he said. The programme includes information about pedestrian crossings, roundabouts road markings, signs, speed limits and give way rules. Some local problems include the confusion around the courtesy crossings in the CBD, which the programme will touch on as well. Each attendee will be issued a book called ‘Keeping Moving’ which illustrates what these new rules are and how they work. “Older drivers of course aren’t driving as much as younger drivers and therefore they do benefit from coming together and discussing these things,” said Geoff. “Their mileages will be much smaller on average but they still need to drive through town.” The course will be presented at the Wesley Centre between 1.30 and 4.30pm on Tuesday, May 22. Contact Geoff on 5788143 to book a place.

A single male fly was found in New Lynn last Thursday and a controlled zone was put in place. The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) has set 71 traps to lure and capture any fruit flies in fruit trees in zone A, the area stretching 200m out from where the fruit fly was found. There are 188 traps in fruiting trees in the wider zone with more being installed. Ripe fruit from trees has been collected for testing for larvae.

Mitre 10 Mega Marlborough kitchen designer aimee beaumont with one of the new kitchen displays in-store.

Kitchens will inspire Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Many people have their own ideas of what features they want in their dream kitchen. Trying to visualise colours schemes, bench top styles, cabinetry design… this can all be very confusing and overwhelming. With the kitchen design team at Mitre 10 Mega Marlborough, kitchen renovations have never been so easy. In-store there are four brand-new Nouveau Designer kitchen displays, each with a different design and colour scheme. According to kitchen designer Aimee Beaumont these displays serve to inspire DIY customers. “These are an example of what we can do and for many people it helps to walk in and around these kitchens to help give them a better idea of what they want. “Customers can then bring their ideas to us and we can design a kitchen to what they want according to the measurements they provide. Plus our CAD computer programme lets you see your dream kitchen in perfect 3D colour,” she says. There is also a new display area showcasing examples of colours, cabinetry, countertops plus much more. Home décor/renovations co-ordinator Lynn Tyrer-Jones is also available to talk about the many options available including lighting, tap wear, colours etc. “It’s a great opportunity for customers to see everything that we can offer when it comes to their DIY home projects,” Aimee says. Preschool Baby on a budget Congratulations you are having a baby. Excitement builds, plans start racing through your thoughts and before you know it your baby budget is exhausted. It’s true when people say that babies cost money, but it’s also true that they don’t need to cost too much. With careful planning and preparation it’s possible to have a baby on a budget, it’s just a matter of ‘thinking outside the square’. - Baby equipment: Yes, babies do need specific things when setting up a nursery but remember that you only need the essentials. Essentials include somewhere safe for your baby to sleep (bassinette or cot), some quality wraps for keeping your baby snug, a safety capsule for your car (an essential for leaving the hospital!), a pram or baby

carrier to make getting around easier and a purpose built change table. Items such as nursery decals and other decorative additions are things you can add to your baby shower list for gift ideas! - Baby clothes: Shopping for babies is often more fun than shopping for yourself. So many cute things to buy. Mostly babies only need the basics, so a staple supply of singlets, all-in-one suits, socks and a warm jacket and beanie and some back up changes for ‘accidents’ are all you really need. - Nutrition: The World Health Organisation recommends that babies are breast fed exclusively for the first six months of their lives. While the choice to breastfeed is a personal one, and is not easy for all mothers, on a purely budget-friendly basis breast is

also best. Newborn babies feed approximately every three or four hours. That’s six or seven feeds a day. With formula costing between $20 - 40 per tin, and each tin anecdotally lasting around a week, you could be spending around $100 a month. Of course, that doesn’t take

Dry nights for children Night-time bedwetting affects around 15 to 20 percent of otherwise healthy five-year-old children. The good news is that bedwetting is just a stage that many young children go through and Huggies DryNites can make this difficult time a little easier by providing discrete and absorbent protection. DryNites not only protects your child’s self-esteem by providing them with the tool to manage this stage themselves, but they also help your child get a good

Merino ideal for clothing and wraps Nature’s wonder fabric, merino wool is completely natural and organic and is the ideal choice for children’s clothing and baby wraps. The wool comes from a special breed of sheep called the Merino, which can be found grazing peacefully all over New Zealand’s pristine farmland. Merino clothing is a wholly natural, recyclable and biodegradable product; at no stage in the manufacturing process are chemicals like chlorine or bleach used, making merino wool one of the safest clothing choices for your children.

Merino wool offers many health benefits to babies and infants. The heat regulation properties inherent in merino wool creates a temperature-controlled cocoon around a sleeping child resulting in a more restful sleep. It can take up to 1 year for newborns to be able to regulate their own body temperature and overheating babies can prove hazardous to their health. Merino wool garments should be your number one choice when it comes to clothing and wrapping your little ones.

Preschool

For the community, not profit I had an interesting conversation recently with someone who explained to me why they chose a specific preschool; they sought to put words to why they made this specific choice. From talking we realised it was memories they could recall of play, discovery and wanting their child to experience something similar. Centres that are community owned such as Blen hei m Ea rly Ch i ld hood Cent res Inc. are governed by parent Board of Trustees (similar to Kindergartens) focus on meeting

families needs as their primary objective. This shows in many ways such as the resources, facilities or the number of qualified teachers caring for your children. The Blenheim Early Childhood Centres have three centres; each has its own feel. “Te Kupenga” is behind Omaka Marae with a calm rural feel. “John Street Preschool” is central and “Uptown” near Redwood town on Hospital road. All three share similar practice, professional teachers, monitoring and support.

We welcome parents to visit and see if what we offer feels right for them. Spaces are available but limited. We offer “20 Free ECE” meaning we can offer great childcare, often up to 20 hours for children over three, at no cost to parents.

Each energy source has its benefits, it's up to you to choose which one is best suited for your home.

What makes you warm? The Consumer New Zealand website (www.consumer.org.nz) carried out its own comparison between different energy sources found in homes throughout New Zealand last month. Ultimately the humble woodburner was found to still be the cheapest way to heat your home, but in the electricity category heat pumps were stated as one of the cheapest heating options to run. Here is some information about different heat sources. Firewood: Along with wind and hydro, wood is one of the few sustainable carbon-neutral home-heating options. But to get the most heat (and the least pollution), it must be burned hot and in a specially designed firebox. The firewood must also be dry and the pieces not too big (less than 11cm in diameter). Some woodburners can be also

used to heat wetbacks. Wood pellets: Wood pellets are used in pellet burners and also in boilers for central heating. Pellet burners cost more to run than woodburners but they have their advantages. They produce less atmospheric pollution and the pellets are carbon neutral because they’re made from waste wood (compressed sawdust and wood shavings). Pellet-fired central heating has a clear environmental advantage over other types of central heating fuel – it uses a renewable resource. Electricity: Heat pumps are one of the cheapest heating options to run. They can be retrofitted – but they must be the right capacity for the house and they must be installed properly. All New Zealanders with houses built before 2000 are eligible for the government’s Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart funding. This programme provides grants for installing insulation and efficient clean heating to keep a home warmer, drier and healthier, and research shows it makes a noticeable difference. You can get up to 33%, up to $1300, off the cost of insulation and once your home is insulated properly, you may be able to qualify for $500 funding towards a clean, efficient heater. For more details about Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart and the funding available, or to apply and find an installer in your area, homeowners can visit www.energywise.govt. nz or call 0800 749 782.

heating comparatively cheap, while portable heaters were found to be the most expensive form of electrical heating. For modern well-insulated homes it’s recommended to use convection or oil-column models because the warm air won't leak away. For poorly insulated older houses with high ceilings, radiant heaters are likely to be more effective as you can feel their heat more directly. Warning - they shouldn’t be used in bedrooms or around young children. Clean energy: Our electricity comes from a combination of renewable (wind, hydro and geothermal) and nonrenewable (gas and coal) sources, so it's only a semi-clean fuel. But in your home, nothing is cleaner. Despite the inexorable rise in the price of electricity, electric heating provides a clean and easy way to heat your home.

Don’t burn your money What’s My Number has for some time been actively promoting its campaign to provide consumers with information about the potential savings they could be making on their power bills. The campaign encourages New Zealanders to shop around for power as well as implement everyday electricity saving habits to help reduce consumption. A simple calculator, provided by Consumer Powerswitch, helps consumers assess their potential savings. Look at www.whatsmynumber.org.nz for more information.

Energy saving tips: - Switching off the beer fridge could save you up to $300 per year. - Dry clothes on the line instead of the dryer and save around $200 per year. - Save around $120 per year when you switch off the towel rail once they’re dry (and it won’t cost a cent to switch off). - Change to energy savings bulbs and save around $120 over the life of each bulb (about $6 a bulb). - Wrap your hot water cylinder and pipes and save around $80 each year on older cylinders. - Wash your clothes in cold water

rather than warm water and you could save around $65 per year. - If your shower fills a bucket in less than a minute, save around $150 a year when you change to an efficient showerhead. - Turn off appliances left on standby and save around $125 a year. Full Sales, Installation and Servicing

Remember as a school student, racing over to sit beside the heated radiators mounted against the wall? They were toasty warm, not too hot to touch and created comfortable warmth throughout the room. These radiators are not restricted to the school classrooms, but they are also designed to be a stylish addition in many New Zealand homes. What makes a radiator system unique is that it’s a safe, stylish and healthy way to heat a home as there is no forced air draughts, not dangerous to touch and silent when operating. They do not affect curtains or furniture within a close proximity and great for drying clothes hung on an airing rack. As most heating sources are designed to match your home or business’s décor, so is the radiator system. They can be painted to match any colour scheme and can be supplied in a range of modern and funky shapes and sizes. New Zealand company Central Heating New Zealand markets the world-renowned DeLonghi Ultimate radiator range which are made from pressed steel panels. Steel heats up and cools down quickly, so these radiators are ideally suited to our changeable weather conditions and the busy lifestyles of NZ’ers. Marlborough’s only specialist in radiator heating is Rob Marshall of Marlborough Plumbing and Heating. Rob knows all about the many benefits of DeLonghi Ultimate radiators and can be contacted on (03) 577 9278 for more information about this great product.

Radiator heating systems can be a stylish addition to any home decor.

M A R L B O R O U G H

Stay WARM this winter! Winter Warmth is something we all require at some time. Air Con Marlborough in conjunction with EECA insulation and clean heat grants can help. They will provide a free home visit to assess your insulation and heating needs. The EECA programme provides a subsidy on insulation and heating for your home. Upgrading your insulation can raise the warmth in your home by up to 4 degrees (with no additional heating). Air Con Marlborough provides a range of insulation solutions using either a recycled polyester product which is clean and highly efficient, or Terralana Wool a purely natural product, again using a mix of recycled product and new. Of course we also have the traditional Pink Batts. Subsidies vary up to 60% on insulation and $1200.00 on Heat pumps supplied by Air Con and

Latino sporting affair By Annabelle Latz When Franco Medina reflects on his time spent in New Zealand to his friends and family back home in Argentina, he will describe the beauty and fun sporting adventures of Marlborough. The 24 year-old arrived in New Zealand 11 months ago, for a working holiday. His name has been a familiar one bantered around the Marlborough Triathlon and Multisport club, winning last month’s Couch Potato Duathlon, and the Michael Huntley Memorial Duathlon. “Living in Blenheim has helped me a lot in my sports, and training will keep being a big part of my travelling.” Although Franco has a natural ability and flare for athleticism, it is the spirit of the events which

he loves the best. “I like helping other people. I feel happy to see people who are really doing their best just to finish.” He admits he intended to spend his months in Auckland, but fate stepped in, after just a couple of weeks. “Some people were coming to Blenheim and I was like ‘ah why not, I’ll go too!” He has been a bee keeper at Bush’s Honey, Old Renwick Rd. In his home village of Coronel Suarez, Buenos Aires province, his family has a bee keeping business, which he has been involved in since he was small. “For me it was like being at home, I was part of the family here too.” He has spent the majority of his spare time in the Marlborough

Sounds, and getting involved in the local sporting scene. He wanted to pass on a big thank you to everyone who has helped him during his stay here, and share his fondness for the region. “I love it here, training in the mountains or by the sea. The views everywhere here are great with the mountains. I see a huge part of New Zealand here rather than being in a city.” He will continue travelling and working for another two years, and wants to be back in South America by 2014 to attend the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Franco studied accountancy before going travelling, and will pursue a career in that field when he gets home.

new riding hoMe A new home for Marlborough’s horse-riding community is being planned with a site near Spring Creek earmarked for the establishment of a new equestrian park. A feasibility study of a 20-hectare site at Botham’s Bend for a combined equestrian sport and recreation facility is due to be completed next month. Last year, the Council drew up a region-wide outdoor sports facility plan outlining the future use of parks and sportsgrounds and identifying likely future needs. Ma rlborough Show Jump ing, Marlborough Dressage, Marlborough Eventing and the Marlborough Endurance and Trail Club have been working closely with the Council.

Club celebrates anniversary By Annabelle Latz Some would call it a loo with a view. Getting off the beaten track is what Mary Jobberns loves about the Marlborough Tramping Club, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary next month. Up the Awatere Valley behind Gladstone Downs is a magic spot where the Tararua Hut and the Murray Adrian Hut stand. The club was formed in 1932, and these huts were knocked together about 60 years’ later. Since 1985, many feet have taken the rocky and rugged path, and made their way up to the huts to spend a night or a weekend. “It does test the average person to their limits. There’s no actual track, just loose rock. It’s just great,” said Mary, captain of the Club. There are nearly 90 river crossings to conquer up through the Hodder Valley up to the huts, with February, March and early autumn being the peak times.

About 400 people visit the huts each year. In mid-March a keen group of trampers opted for the easier option, and were flown to the huts by helicopter, with a new toilet. The hard work started when they got there. Setting up the new toilet involved a fair bit of digging, sweat, measuring and assembling. The $4500 project was paid for by the Club, a reflection on how well the huts are used. “The club is pretty much self funding. We like to keep the facilities in as good as condition as we can.” Mary is looking forward to the Club’s celebration, on Saturday and Sunday June 9 and 10, where all past and present members are welcome. The celebration will involve tramping, eating and lots of catch ups. Phone Club treasurer Helen Miller, 572 8530, or email lbhmmiller@xtra.co.nz for more information.

franco Mediina, from argentina, left Blenheim this week after what he described as a fantastic year here, heavily involved in sports and the outdoors.

Fisherman leads the way By Robbie Parkes Without many places to get certified fly fishing lessons in New Zealand, Malcolm Fretter has taken it upon himself to pass on his knowledge. “Down here we have about 10 qualified casting instructors, and they get their examinations through America,” he said. The nearest qualified fly fishing instructor is in Hanmer, then Christchurch, then Queenstown. “Nobody at the top of the South Island can teach them,” he said. Malcolm, a member of the International Federation of Fly Fishers is holding tutorials during the winter months to teach fishermen better casting techniques. He will also be sitting his instructors’ exam in November which will involve demonstrating practical tasks and answering written questions. The tutorials themselves act as training for his test. “I have to practice every day,” he said. Each tutorial goes for four weeks, with about two hours spent every Sunday learning these new skills.

The Sun

(From left) Gavin Morris, Paul Watts, Rod Littlefield, Thomas Walsh and John Rainey are fine tuning a few fly fishing skills with Malcolm Fretter (right) who will be a qualified instructor soon.

Most of the tutorials will be on grass, but the final Sunday we will take the lesson to the river. Approximately four groups will be run during the coming winter months. Malcolm said it is getting to a stage where fly fishing is waning. He said people are under-skilled and under-

prepared, go out fly fishing, and then grizzle that they don’t catch anything. “When it boils down to it, there’s an awful lot to it, it’s all mechanics and physic.” But he admitted people would not want to sit down to a ‘math lesson’ when they come to his courses, so he has to make his sessions

practical and fun. Malcolm has been fly fishing for 10 years. He used to do it with his father after WWII, when he was growing up in Leicestershire, Rutland in England. Names can be taken for the upcoming sessions at Henderson’s Fishing Shop on Grove Road.
