Making their marc By Aimee O’Hagan Four year 12 students from Marlborough Girls’ College have designed their own environmentally-friendly (and sweetly scented!) hair mist. Louise Brown, Olive Smith, Kate Thompson, and Erika Babb are the young entreprenuers who make up the group, Oceania. They have spent approximately six months creating the hair mist, which is part of their entry into the 2019 Lions Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme. It’s no ordinary spray: there’s something extra special about the girls’ product. The mist contains a particular ingredient – one that was featured in the product to reduce a certain growing problem in Marlborough; grape marc. “We’re using grape seed oil which is extracted from grape marc,” Olive explains. “This is a massive issue in the Marlborough wine region. “By incorporating that we thought we were playing a part in reducing a local issue.” Continued on page 2. Erika Babb (left), Olive Smith, Kate Thompson, and Louise Brown have designed and made a hair mist that contains grape seed oil.

Students design eco-friendly hair mist for business scheme Continued from page 1. Although small (125ml), the bottle of hair mist – ‘A Spritz of H2O’, the girls are calling it – packs a lot of power. The spray, according to Kate, “specialises in removing the salt from your hair following ocean swimming, as well as detangling and revitalising hair”. “We all swim out here at the beach and love going out there in the summer,” CEO of Oceania, Louise, says. “Which means we are always coming out of the water with salt in our hair. “We don’t really like it, so as a way of getting around that we developed this product.” Their target market, Louise says, are “beachgoers, teens, and tourists”. It is not only the ingredients of the mist that are eco-friendly: the team is also using glass bottles to package their product. “Instead of using plastic bottles,

which can easily be chucked away and found in the ocean, we are using glass bottles so they can be recycled,” Louise says. “It reduces the waste,” Kate adds. A percentage of their profit is also set to go towards local, non-profit organisation, Guardians of the Sounds. So far, the girls have had to complete two out of four challenges to prove that their product is impressive. As one of 22 teams across the Nelson/Marlborough region, the group were “excited” to take out first place in challenge one, which was to create a video introducing their product. “We weren’t expecting it!” Louise exclaims. Although the group has completed the second challenge (making a pitch to a dragon den of judges), they have not yet found out the results. What they are sure of, however, is that the pitch went “really well”.

The girls have their fingers crossed that they will continue to succeed in the next two challenges, which are product promotion and sales. For Oceania, the “coolest part” of the project so far has been the opportunity to work with Hope Dollimore from Designer Skincare NZ. “Designer Skincare helped us come up with the formula [for the hair mist],” Olive says. “It was really insightful for us, because we’re starting out and we know nothing.” According to Olive, it was Hope who inspired them to incorporate the grape seed oil in their product. “Hope suggested that we find an issue in our region and try to solve it.” For more information, Oceania can be contacted on 0221607937, or via email at info.oceaniabusiness@ gmail.com. The design of the girls' product is simple but striking. Products cost $15.99 each.

Chris takes on Boy George

inbrief

By Celeste Alexander Dreadlocks, makeup and a tall hat will be a dramatic change for Rapaura School teacher Chris Valli who will be taking to the stage as Boy George in the Stars in Your Eyes show next month. The Stars in Your Eyes show will be featuring nine locals who will transform themselves into their chosen music artist to perform in the charity contest which takes place on August 17 at the ASB Theatre. The event is a joint fundraising initiative for two local charities, Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation Marlborough. Originally, Chris had wanted to audition as George Michael but says he questioned whether he could hit the same notes as the famous singer, and instead looked for another option. “I was watching The Voice television show one night and saw Boy George so decided then that he would be my performance,” he says. What people may not know is that there is one commonality between Chris and Boy George; they both hail from Irish Catholic families. “But that would be the only thing we have in common,” he jokes. Dressing up and taking on another personality is nothing new for Chris who has been part of several Blenheim Musical Theatre productions, including the Full Monty, Annie and Mamma Mia. “I had moved up from Christchurch for a teaching job and auditioned for Full

Monty which was what got me into the theatre scene,” he says. Growing up as the youngest of seven children, Chris says music surrounded him 24/7, so when he heard the Stars in Your Eyes show was back on in Blenheim he knew he wanted to sing in 80s theme. To portray Boy George as closely as possible, Chris is embracing the dreadlocks and makeup look and is even practising his mannerisms. “Boy George has the ability to be gestural when he’s dancing. “It’s hard case being the only bloke in the show, but I’ll still look quite feminine,” he laughs. Each of the contestants have chosen a charity which will benefit from any winnings and having been a Type 1 diabetic for 25-years, Chris has nominated Diabetes Marlborough. “It’s funny, because my students will sometimes see me with a jelly bean in class and they will ask me if I’m OK as they know it’s to do with my blood sugar levels. “They’ve even brought me bags of jelly beans as a leaving gift as I’m off to Queen Charlotte College next term for a new role as an English teacher,” he says. Tickets for Stars in Your Eyes are now on sale at the ASB Theatre’s booking office, or at www.ticketek.co.nz and cost $73 including fees.

Local dancers hope to shine By Celeste Alexander Marlborough has a proud history of producing champion highland dancers, and this weekend there could be more titles earned during the 2019 NZ Championships being held at the ASB Theatre. Marlborough Highland Dancing are hosting the championships which begin tomorrow and run through to Sunday. Over 200 dancers aged from five to 25-years will be competing and of them, 35 are from Marlborough. This is exciting for the region, principal teacher at Marlborough Academy of Dance Robyn Simmons says, as the dancers coming from all around NZ will be bringing with them their teachers, parents and supporters to Blenheim. “This is the main event on the competition calendar for highland dancers in NZ,” she says. “Our dancers have all been

working extremely hard with their teachers to be able to perform at their best and we are hopeful of some superb performances and results.” It’s also a great time to showcase Blenheim’s ASB Theatre as previously this championship event was held at the old Marlborough Civic Theatre. “Marlborough Highland Dancing are pleased to host this event at the ASB Theatre as the state-of-the-art facilities will allow for more dressing room space for the dancers. “Plus the use of the new Anderson Theatre as a warm-up area for dancers and teachers is sure to be super-busy and popular,” Robyn says. For anyone wanting to go along and watch there is free entry to the public for the four days of the championships from 8.30am each morning through to 7pm in the evening.

Free session aims to help atrial fibrillation sufferers

The Heart Foundation is sending a clear message to Marlborough residents living with atrial fibrillation (AF) – you are not alone. The Foundation is hosting a free information session for people who are living with AF, New Zealand’s fastest-growing form of heart disease, on Friday July 19, at the Foundry, John Street, Blenheim, from 9.30 to 11am. Atrial fibrillation causes an irregular heart rhythm, which results in poor blood flow and an increased risk of stroke for some. It can strike adults at any age, but about four in every 100 New Zealanders over 65 will have AF in their lifetime, making it the most common type of irregular heart rhythm (known as arrhythmia). Local cardiologist, Dr Daniel Garofalo, is leading the session and will provide an

overview of the disease and discuss treatment options and lifestyle modifications that can help people manage it. “There are different types of atrial fibrillation and multiple clinical situations. Based on this, the challenge is to implement a treatment strategy that achieves a good result with minimum complications or side effects,” says Dr Daniel. “Atrial fibrillation is not a condition limited to the heart. The causes can often be found elsewhere, and the same applies to some of its consequences. Notably stroke is worth noting, as these days there are many effective ways to prevent it.” Heart Foundation Nelson Marlborough Heart Health Advocate Averil West says living with heart disease such as AF or recovering from a heart event can be “lonely and challenging for many

people”. “We want to reach out to those families and provide a warm, supportive environment that allows them to hear from experts and meet others who are in a similar situation,” she says. Those who are living with, or those who may be at risk of AF can also refer to the Foundation’s specialised AF website and resources, and seek medical advice if concerned. Symptoms of AF include feeling breathless, dizziness or feeling faint, racing heart, tiredness, chest discomfort and difficulty exercising. However, lots of people with AF have minimal, if any, symptoms. You can register for this free session at by contacting Averil West on 03 545 7112 or email averilw@heartfoundation.org.nz.

Surprise celebration for Virginia’s 25 years By Celeste Alexander Last Friday saw students and tutors gather at Community College Marlborough for the end of term, but little did one person in the room know it was also a secret celebration in her honour. As ComCol Marlborough manager Virginia Archer spoke to students about their goals for the year, her colleagues were sneaking in a cake, balloons and flowers to present to her. There were also some recorded videos from colleagues and friends congratulating her on 25-years working at ComCol. “Oh my gosh, this is a surprise,” Virginia exclaimed as she was handed beautiful

flowers. She went on to share her journey with the students, explaining how she too had found high school challenging. “I know what it’s like to be not asked to return to school. I didn’t have a great time at high school… stuff goes on in your home-life and when you get to school it can be hard at times.” Virginia left school and went into landscape design, and after returning to Marlborough she decided she wanted to ‘change peoples’ lives and help them to overcome the barriers they face at school. “A horticulture teaching position became available

at the college, which then was called an academy. Unfortunately the course was cancelled when I got the job but I stayed on in various other roles and over time I began to love the job even more. “There weren’t as many youth then but I was passionate about growing the number and here we are today,” she says. “What’s special about the culture we have here is that we understand everyone has a story and they bring that here. We offer a fresh start at ComCol… sometimes it’s been five fresh starts for people, but that’s just what we believe,” Virginia smiles.

ComCol Marlborough manager Virginia Archer (centre) was surprised by staff and students last Friday when they held a celebration for her 25-year milestone with the college. She's pictured with some of the ComCol students.

MDC and climate change to put up with of late. You can’t blame them for that. Putting up a different timetable will confuse a lot of people. Not only is Blenheim a growing place, as mentioned, we need more and maybe later services for workers without transport. Regular User Blenheim

Dear Ed, I note criticism of local government dragging the chain over climate change. A good example is the Marlborough District Council, which seems to have no policy about safeguarding trees. “The most effective way to fight global warming is to plant lots of trees, a trillion of them, maybe more,” according to a new Swiss study. Trees suck up heat-trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. So why does MDC allow the indis-

criminate felling of trees? I see up the Waihopai half a dozen trees on the road reserve have been felled. Even if you are a sceptic as regards global warming, trees have an environmental, wildlife and aesthetic value. Vineyard expansion continues to fell any and every tree. But then the God in Marlborough is wine, isn’t it? Even if it is for foreign owners. It just doesn’t make sense. Don Coyote Blenheim

Third win for young viti, Ben Richards

By Celeste Alexander Ben Richards from Indevin became the Bayer Marlborough Young Viticulturist of the Year 2019 on July 4 following the competition held at Constellation’s Drylands Vineyard. Competing on their home turf might have given Jaimee Whitehead and Dan Warman of Constellation a confidence boost as Jaimee took out second and Dan third. It was a long, tough day as the eight contestants worked their way around nine challenges which tested their physical skills as well as their viticultural knowledge. They also went head to head in the BioStart Hortisports at lunchtime and finally undertook a quick fire buzzer round and delivered a three minute speech at the awards dinner held at Wither Hills. They were tested on pretty much everything required to run a vineyard successfully and all showed they were very capable. “It’s very evident they had all worked hard in the lead up to the competition and they approached the day with great enthusiasm,” national co-ordinator Nicky Grandorge says.

“The calibre of contestants was high and there was a really positive vibe as they also gave each other a lot of respect and support. The sponsors and judges felt they were all very professional and already showing great leadership qualities.” Craig Harper, the solo cyclist who has just completed the race across America, was the guest speaker at the dinner. He talked about the importance of preparation, setting goals outside your comfort zone, and not giving up. This was great advice for the young vits as they embark on their careers, and also inspirational to everyone in the audience. As the Marlborough winner, Ben will go on to represent the region in the national final which is held in conjunction with Bragato at the end of August, this year being held in Hawke’s Bay. This will be the third year that Richards has been in the national final, so he will be more determined than ever to take out the overall title. The national winner will not only become the Bayer Young Viticulturist of the Year 2019 but will win an amazing prize package of a Hyundai Kona

one on one with the Sun

‘All the world’s a stage . . .’ Marlborough Repertory Society life member Aileen Rowe was often seen on stage, but the 90-year-old has had many roles in a rich life, as she tells Bill McElhinney. Aileen Rowe remembers when her family moved from Havelock to the Wakamarina Valley in 1933. Her Dad, Walter Schultz, had got a job with Baigent’s mill and the workers and their families moved into partially-built mill houses. “There were window and door openings, but no actual windows and doors in place when we moved in,” Aileen says. “Then it snowed! So they tacked sacks over the door and window openings.” Despite the freezing cold, she and her siblings ran outside to make snowmen and have snowball fights. It was a different world in 1929 when Aileen was born in Havelock. But the sprightly 90-year-old can look back on a full and fruitful life, recalling times, places, dates and people with ease.

“I especially liked directing one-act plays” “It was basic living in those times, but we were always well fed and happy,” Aileen says. “Although I was always worried about the long drop toilet. There were two holes in the seat, one for the adults and one for the kids. I used to worry that one of the younger kids would fall down the big hole!” Tragedy struck the family in 1941 when Walter died in an accident and Mum Mae and her nine children had to move to Havelock into a small, three-bedroom house on the Mahakipawa Road. “With a new baby and recently widowed, it was a tough time for Mum and she was very run down,” Aileen recalls. By 1942 Aileen was in Standard 6 (Form 2) and was deemed bright enough to go to secondary school, which not every youngster did in

those days. She boarded with an aunt in Blenheim while she attended Marlborough College, a co-ed school at the time. However, at the end of her second year at college Aileen left to work at the Havelock Bakery to support her Mum, who was struggling financially. It was here that Aileen started performing, a life-long interest that would provide her, and many others, with much enjoyment. “Jock Baillie, the baker, was great with youngsters and taught us to dance, to sing, we went to concert parties, although I made my first appearance on stage at age seven in a Queen Carnival to raise funds for Havelock Plunket.” In 1947 Aileen moved to Blenheim and began as a junior nurse at Wairau Hospital. Two years later a planned trip to Australia with a cousin fell through because Aileen’s Mum wouldn’t let her 19-year-old daughter go. Aileen worked in Blenheim and in 1949 married builder Jack Rowe, who she had known on and off since she was eight years old. Jack worked for Bythell and Co before going setting up his own business, with Aileen doing the books. The couple had three children, Marie, Bernard and Jennifer, and in 1958 Aileen joined the Country Women’s Institute, where she has been an active member for 61 years. In 1961 she joined the Marlborough Repertory Society, where she is a life member and still actively involved. She acted in a number of plays and was also a director. “I especially liked directing one-act plays,” Aileen says. “I also liked character roles when I got the chance and I especially liked working with director Duncan Whiting.” She wrote and directed plays for the CWI and in 1968 won a national award for the play, The Cage, which

she directed. In 1961 daughter Marie wanted to join St John, and because the classes were in the evening, Aileen went along to accompany her daughter and ended up joining St John herself. “It was busy most Saturdays,” Aileen recalls. “We were on duty at sports events, galas and A & P shows.” Her St John training helped save a life in 1969. “We were in town,” Aileen says, “and we came across an accident in Market Street where a man had fallen through a plate glass window and was lying on the floor of the shop bleeding heavily. “I dragged him away from the glass, whipped his tie off from around his neck, and tied a tourni-

quet round his thigh. The bleeding stopped almost immediately. “When I visited him in hospital the next day he threw his arms around me and thanked me for saving his life. His main artery had been severed in two places!” Aileen also worked in town at Coles Colour Service in Queen Street and was there part-time for seven years. In the late 1970s she worked at Thomas’s before getting a job at the Redwood Bakery, which meant early morning starts and home for a nap in the afternoons. However the bakery hours proved too much, and Aileen left to work part-time at State Insurance, where she stayed for seven years. At 59 Aileen retired from State and took up lawn bowls at the

Waterlea Club, which eventually relocated to Whitehead Park and became the Whitehead Park bowling Club. She did two stints as president and is a life member. A bad fall last year left her with a damaged arm, so she’s not bowling at the moment. “Plus I’ve had two hip replacements and I’m not moving so easily now. But who knows – I may get back bowling yet,” Aileen says with a smile. In 2016 Aileen published The Stages of My Life, her memoir, featuring stories from life as a child in the wilds of Wakamarina Valley and a detailed account of her family history. A mother, grandmother and great grandmothers at 90, she happily looks back on a full, rich life.

Musical duo will share their skills with students By Bill McElhinney Marlborough violin and piano students will have the opportunity for a masterclass with two talented musicians when the Auckland-based Emanon Duo visits Blenheim later this week. “The masterclass is essentially a lesson with an audience present,” pianist Monica Chang says. Monica and violinist John Thomson have performed in various venues over the past three years, not only bringing music to the community but working together to provide coaching to the next generation of young musicians. “Non musicians are welcome to attend the masterclass,” Monica says. “Even though the participants are the ones directly getting feedback on their playing, we are often communicating to the audience and the audience is often asked to participate in listening exercises or activities. “I have enjoyed attending masterclasses since I was young and I believe even non musicians will be surprised how much they can get out of these

workshops.” Monica is an active chamber musician, solo and collaborative pianist and a former Accelerando Junior Academy tutor. She currently supports a number of music teachers in Auckland as an accompanist and is a preferred pianist for the Suzuki Violin School in Auckland. John grew up in Auckland where he began his violin studies. In 2009 he returned to New Zealand after 25 years in the USA, where he gained his doctorate in violin performance and was violin professor at several universities and was violinist in the Rawlins Piano Trio. He has taught violin and viola at the Nelson School of Music and serves as concertmaster of the Nelson Symphony Orchestra. John and Monica will perform works from Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms in St Andrews Church 7pm on Friday. Their masterclass with local students will be held at St Andrews on Saturday from 9.30 to 11.30am.

Violinist John Thomson and pianist Monica Chang, the Emanon Duo, wll be peforming in Blenheim on Friday and holding a masterclass on Saturday.

Weather stats show the temperature is rising By Bill McElhinney It is getting warmer, weather data from the past 90 years shows. There was a cool start and end to June. The temperatures in the first and fourth weeks were below average, but the second week was a lot warmer than average and the third week was close to average, Rob Agnew, from the Marlborough Research Centre, says.

Although June mean temperatures have exhibited large variation over the period from 1930 to 2019, the overall picture is an upwards trend in June mean temperatures over the 90 years. The temperatures have gone from 6.86°C in 1930 to 9.1°C in 2019; which is an increase of 2.24°C over the 90 year period, Rob says.

Sunshine hours last month were well above average and there were 15 ground frosts, slightly above average. Total sunshine for the first six months of 2019 was 1428.9 hours, which is above average. The 12 month period from July 2018 to June 2019 is now the second sunniest July to June on record.

Rob says it is interesting to note that the three sunniest July to June years on record since 1930 have all been within the last five years. The average daily maximum temperature of last month of 14.2°C was 0.4°C above average, and the average daily minimum temperature of 2.8°C was 0.7°C below average, so the days were warmer than average and the

nights cooler than average. The coldest ground frost was -5.4°C recorded on June 3. This is the first year since 2012 to have recorded an above average number of frosts in June. The higher number of frosts is related to fairly clear skies associated with lower than average rainfall and above average sunshine, Rob says.

Thai 9 Restaurant There is plenty to be excited about at Blenheim’s newest Thai restaurant – Thai 9 on Scott Street. Owners Nichcha Wararatanasupa and Ping Muanwong took over the restaurant in May and quickly set about adding their unique touch. They have created a brand new menu based on authentic Thai flavours which will be launched next week, as well as their new online ordering system. All of this will be announced on the Thai 9 restaurant’s Facebook page including a barcode to scan the app. The restaurant has taken over what was formerly Poppy Thai, and with a fresh coat of paint and a spacious dining area, it’s an exciting new beginning for Nichcha and Ping. It’s been Nichcha’s personal goal to open her own Thai restaurant and since formally taking over in May, she and her team of chefs have been busy preparing for the opening. “We are really excited for people to come in and experience our authentic Thai dishes. Of course there is the option to alter the spice

level, but I think people will really enjoy the menu,” she says. Chefs Koy and Lek make their own sauces which enables them to be gluten free, as well as making their own selection of icecream flavours. The menu has a delicious selection of appetisers, curries, salads and noodle, rice and stir-fried dishes, as well as a kids menu and to finish the meal off – desserts! “Most of the menu is gluten free and we cater for vegan and vegetarian dietary requirements,” Nichcha says. “We have also added even more keto options to our new menu launching next week.” Thai 9 opens at 10.30am for those wanting to start their day with a coffee and it stays open through to lunch service. If it’s not coffee you are wanting, there’s a selection of flower teas, cold and iced drinks, bubble teas and juices. Then from 4.30pm it reopens for dining and takeaways. “Bring your friends and family for an enjoyable, authentic Thai dining experience.”

Council adopts annual plan, local body elections loom The Marlborough District Council has adopted its annual plan for 2019-2020, setting the rates for the coming financial year, which came into effect from last Monday. Council confirmed its funding priorities two weeks ago following the Annual Plan submission process. Mayor John Leggett says the council has managed to keep the rates increase this year to 3.62 per cent, down from the 3.96 per cent originally consulted on, and the 5.72 per cent signalled in the Long Term Plan. “This year we’ve been able to fund some great initiatives and projects that were brought to us during the Annual Plan submission process,” John says. “Major investments in core infrastructure, particularly

water, sewer and stormwater upgrades, remain our most significant cost driver. We have been able to maintain a strong environmental and infrastructural focus, whilst supporting a range of community projects. “The combination of these initiatives means Marlborough will be an even better place to work and live,” John says. “I’d like to thank everyone who submitted to our draft annual plan and to the Council staff who made our job so much easier. As I’ve said before, good information equals good decisions. “As we approach elections this coming October, I’d like to thank this group of councillors for their committed stewardship of our district over the three years of this electoral term.

“By working together in a cooperative, focused and practical way, we have made excellent progress that will benefit the people of Marlborough for many years to come.” There will be five vacancies on the council in this year’s local body elections on October 12. Councillors Trevor Hook, Cynthia Brooks and Geoff Evans have each announced they will not run in this year’s local body elections. Councillor Laressa Shenfield resigned in October last year and deputy mayor Terry Sloan has announced he is stepping down. Mayor John Leggett announced earlier this year he would stand again for the mayoralty as he still had several projects he wanted to see finished.
