C’mon pie-ple! By Bill McElhinney Who ate all the pies? Well it could be you, if you can come up with a winning savoury pie recipe. The popular annual Burleigh pies and Marlborough wine match competition is coming up soon, but this year the organisers have decided to widen the contest. “We’re inviting people to enter the Burleigh Pie Recipe competition,” organiser Fiona Fenwick says. “We want to have a bit of winter fun, so we’re looking for local pie fans to come up with creative ideas! Continued on page 2. Real estate agent Kurt Lindsay reckons slowbraised beef cheeks would make the best pie filling. However, a mate reckons ham, cheese and pineapple could be worth a go!

Your pie recipe could be a winner Continued from page 1. “All you have to do is put your culinary skills and tastebuds to good use and suggest a great savoury pie filling that the discerning pie loving ‘pie-ple’ of Marlborough will love!” The winning entry, as decided by the Burleigh pie team, will receive bragging rights, a crate of Burleigh pies to enjoy, and the opportunity to join the judging panel in the final of the Great Burleigh Pie Pairing Challenge in September. “You need to be over 18 and interested in wine,” Fiona says, “but you could get the chance to taste up to 60 pies with matching wines!” Devised in the depths of winter by a group of friends over a drink, the challenge involves sourcing pies from The Burleigh and matching them with a Marlborough wine. “The objective is to find the best locally produced wine to pair with
Burleigh pies that include: chicken, leek and mushroom; vegetarian; steak and blue cheese; mince and English cheddar; pork belly; Jamaican jerk chicken; steak and truffled cheese and more!” Fiona says. The Burleigh co-owner Rod Burdis is the man who comes up with the many and varied pie fillings. “I base them on my considerable experience as a pie consumer,” Rod says with a grin. “When we started out we had just two pie flavours, now we’ve got 13! “We love the unexpected and we love quality, so we can’t wait to see what Marlborough people come up with,” Rod says. You don’t have to produce the pie filling to enter: just fill out an entry form with your contact details and your pie recipe suggestion. And you need to be available to take part in the pie and wine
A creative savoury pie filling recipe could win you a spot on the Burleigh Pie/Wine Pairing judging panel.

One last push to save the oaks By Aimee O’Hagan A group of local tree-lovers are on the home stretch to preventing Dog Point Road from becoming a “treeless landscape” – but they still need all the help they can get. In March, it was announced that 70 oak trees lining the rural road were needing to be felled. The branches of the trees, according to Marlborough District Council and Marlborough Lines, were growing dangerously close to the power lines above. The trees were deemed a “fire hazard”; it was too risky to let them keep growing. Since then, the team has been doing everything in their power to save the oaks from being cut down, including figuring out alternative solutions to the problem. One such solution is that the power lines be undergrounded. Waihopai Valley resident, Grant Baxter, says that the group has received over $90,000 in pledges from supporters,

which is set to go towards funding the undergrounding of the lines. A recent change in contractor has excitingly taken the estimate cost of undergrounding down from $160,000 to approximately $130,000. “We’re down to the last 10 or 15 percent,” he says. “So that’s the last $20,000 to $30,000. “We’re getting a bit desperate. We really need the funds!” He adds that the group are definitely not far away, but he still wants to ensure that people know about it. “If you know of anybody, please pass on the pledge form,” he says. “It takes 30 years for the trees to grow, and one minute for them to be felled. “It would be an absolute tragedy if they were to be cut down.” For more information, Grant can be contacted on 0272971902.

Lieke set to go Gaga
By Celeste Alexander If you haven’t heard of Lieke Tegels before, you will soon after she performs as American singer and songwriter Lady Gaga at the Stars in Your Eyes show on Saturday, August 17. The event is a joint fundraising initiative for two local charities, Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation, and is being held at the ASB Theatre. The bubbly, fun loving blonde from Holland will be swapping her look for Lady Gaga’s flamboyant style for her performance, something she’s more excited than nervous about. “Oh my gosh… I’m definitely very excited. I don’t get nervous easily but that might kick in minutes before the show,” she laughs. The 29-year-old came to Marlborough nearly a year ago to work in the wine industry as a hospitality co-ordinator for Cloudy Bay. Back home in Holland, Lieke has been in covers bands over the years but stepping out on stage for the Stars in Your Eyes contest is something she’s never done before. “We don’t have things like this in Holland and it’s certainly not as community focused as what NZ is. “I had actually heard about the show from another contestant who encouraged me to audition. At first
I thought about singing one of her new songs, but then I decided that I wanted to be more like Lady Gaga and stand out. “What I love about her is that she knows exactly what she wants. She’s an amazing artist with her own style which is why I have chosen one of her earlier songs to perform,” Lieke says. To complete her look, Lieke isn’t giving too much away but does hint at it being something unique. “Let’s just say I’m doing lots of gluing, cutting and pasting at home,” she grins. For her chosen charity which will benefit from any prize money, Lieke has chosen the Graeme Dingle Foundation. “I chose this organisation because I love its values. If we all shared the values of resilience, respect and positive relations the world would be a better place,” she says. The Stars in Your Eyes show was originally featuring 10 contestants, however the Jessica Rabbit performance has unfortunately had to pull out. However the other nine contestants remaining are promising

Former nurses pay surprise visit to their elderly teacher By Bill McElhinney Working, learning and living together builds strong bonds of friendship. A group of nurses who began their training together at Wairau Hospital in 1964 gathered in Blenheim at the weekend for their 55th reunion. “There were 16 of us in the original 1964 class, and 11 managed to get to the reunion,” former Blenheim nurse, Helen Knapp, says. One of the weekend highlights was a visit to their former tutor, Esther Barnett, 88, now a resident at Waterlea Retirement Home. “She was a nursing sister who taught us in the classroom before
we went out into the wards, under supervision,” Helen says. “She was strict, of course, but she was also like a Mum to us, and was always keen to see that our best interests were looked after and that we did the right thing for the future of our careers. “She was thrilled to see some of her past pupils, and didn’t take long to remember most of our names.” The young nurse trainees spent three-and-a-half years together, training at Wairau Hospital and the former Holmdale Maternity Home, and living together at the former nurses home adjacent to Wairau Hospital. “You build strong bonds when
you work and live together over that time,” Helen says. “It was a great way to learn and you had the added benefit of having people with the same experiences to share your joys and sorrows with at the end of the day.” Living in the nurses home meant living under supervision, and you had to apply for leave if you wanted to be out after 10pm. “Some of the more adventurous girls would climb in the window if they were late back to the nurses home after an outing,” Helen says. The young nurses wore white uniforms with caps and red capes, and received a shoe and stocking allowance.
“If we were late to lunch we had to stand on a line on the dining room floor and wait until the Matron nodded. Then we were excused and could go to our table,” Helen recalls. “We only had half an hour for lunch and had to change to a clean uniform before we went to the dining room. “And we always had to stand if a more senior nurse or a doctor came into the room. We also had to stand back at doorways to let more senior people through first. “Some of the surgical equipment we handled was really antiquated,” Helen recalls. “There was an old autoclave steriliser at Holmdale which we
were all frightened of, because we had to light the gas to get it going!” The young nurses learned great practical skills by being trained in a hospital environment, Helen says. “In the 1960s there were Americans here at the Longbank US Air Force Base at Woodbourne, and we met some of the US nurses. “The ones that had been college trained had good technical skills, but the ones that had trained in hospitals had practical skills and more patient empathy.” The Class of ’64 will get together again in two years time, Helen says. “We’re all getting older now, and we don’t want to leave it too long!”

The proposed East Coast Whale Trail follows the migratory path of the giant sperm whales.
Whale Trail plan gets a boost By Bill McElhinney A new cycle and walking trail stretching 200 kilometres from Picton to Kaikoura has a new name and government funding. The Whale Trail has been in the planning stage since the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. Its name is a nod to the enormous success of the whale watching industry in Kaikoura and the historic importance of whaling in the Marlborough Sounds. It also mirrors the whales’ migratory path, which the trail will follow down the East Coast of the South Island. Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones has allocated $322,000 from the Provincial Growth Fund to enable a technical study to be completed. The money will be used for a technical study to create an accurate alignment of where the trail will go. “On behalf of the Marlborough Kaikoura Trail
Trust, I’m delighted that the Government has seen the potential of the Whale Trail and has allocated this critical funding to undertake the technical study. It builds on the generous support already received from the Rata Foundation,” Trust chair, Luke van Velthooven, says. “Our vision is a worldclass cycle trail that offers exceptional recreational experiences while providing wide-ranging and long-lasting benefits for our communities.” KiwiRail, Iwi, the Marlborough and Kaikoura district councils and the New Zealand Transport Agency will be key partners, Luke says. Marlborough Mayor John Leggett has welcomed the news. “I’m very pleased that the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund has come on board,” John says. “In 2017, Marlborough District Council gave $50,000 to
fund an initial study, which estimated a trail from Picton to Kaikoura could pump more than $100 million into the Marlborough economy over the next 20 years.” The Whale Trail will connect the communities of Picton, Blenheim, Seddon, Ward, Kekerengu, Clarence and Kaikoura and is expected to provide economic opportunities and stimulus to these communities. The Marlborough Kaikoura Trail trustees are property consultant/director and Rowing NZ national selector Luke van Velthooven; Dr John Forrest, a well-known wine industry figure; Margaret Cooney, commercial strategy advisor; Sank Macfarlane, owner of The Store in Kekerengu; former Port Marlborough chief executive Ian McNabb; environmental designer Cynthia Stoks and Kauahi Ngapora, general manager of Whale Watch Kaikoura.

Dingy dinghy gets a makeover from Renwick Menz Shed By Bill McElhinney The Renwick Pre-School children love their little dinghy. They play on it frequently, some with fishing roads, some with lifejackets. It has been fitted with a steering wheel containing a number of buttons to push, and a bell which rings brightly. The dinghy was restored and upgraded by the Renwick Menz Shed members. “It was pretty rotten when we got it,” Menz Shed chairman Rick Gleeson says. “Jonathan Haste took on the project and put in new framing, a new floor and painted it.” “I found the steering wheel at the Salvation Army Toy Library,” Jonathan says. “It’s got lots of buttons on it which the kids love to play with.” There are about 12 regular Menz Shed members at Renwick, and they have been busy building a
roadside stall for Wairau Valley residents and planter boxes for the Renwick Museum. Busy little boys also gather at the Renwick Menz Shed every Friday to learn some practical skills. The five, six and seven-year-olds, some accompanied by parents, are initially given hammers, nails and wood off-cuts and encouraged to build whatever they like. “We want to help youngsters build practical skills, to learn to be hands-on,” Rick says. The Menz Shed organisers were approached by Renwick School principal Simon Heath over a year ago, and since then have hosted groups of boys during the school terms. “We get them building things like toy trains and trucks,” says Rick. “We cut out the bits and the boys assemble them, sand and paint them. They get a real buzz out of each project when they see what they have made.”
Pat Clay takes over at Blenheim South Rotary Blenheim South Rotary recently had a changeover, with Pat Clay taking over as president from Ian Bond. “I have thoroughly enjoyed the past year, have found it personally rewarding and our achievements satisfying,” outgoing president Ian said at the handover. “There have been many milestones, the most significant being the Club’s 50th birthday back in November which we celebrated in style with a visit to the Tory Channel whaling station followed by a grand dinner.” The Blenheim South Club has a group of more than 40 Blenheim men and women who serve the local community by means of hands-on doing , fund-raising, and sponsorship. They meet weekly for approximately 90 minutes and usually enjoy a guest speaker and a meal. The club has become involved

Remember the heater-metre rule – always keep furniture, curtains, clothes and children at least one metre away from heaters and fireplaces.
Fire, heater and blanket safety Winter brings a unique set of fire dangers that you need to be aware of. Follow these fire safety tips to help keep yourself and your family safe, no matter the season. Fireplaces and chimneys • Always use a fireguard or spark-guard when using an open fire. • Never throw rubbish into the fireplace – particularly batteries and aerosol cans. • Always empty ashes and ashtrays into a metal bin and pour water over them before disposal. Remember that ashes can take up to five days to cool.
Beat the cold
• Keep matches, lighters and anything else that can create fire out of reach of children. Electric blankets • Replace your electric blanket every five years with newer heat-protected models, which are safer. • Worn and old electric blankets can cause an electric shock, fire and possibly even death. • At the first sign of wear have your electric blanket checked by a qualified electrician. • Don’t place heavy objects on the bed while the blanket is on. • Make sure the blanket is always flat on the bed and that
controls or cords are not twisted or caught between the mattress and the base of the bed. Twisted cords are a common cause of electric blanket fires. • Roll your blanket when you store it for the summer, don’t fold it. Heaters and clothes dryers • Remember the heater-metre rule – always keep furniture, curtains, clothes and children at least one metre away from heaters and fireplaces. • Never cover heating appliances or store objects on top of them. • Don’t overload clothes dryers and clean the lint filter after each
load cycle. Portable LPG gas heaters • Check to see the gas hose is in good condition and doesn’t show any signs of damage or wear. • If the heater does not light straight away, turn it off and then try again. Don’t let the gas build up before trying to relight it. • Always have fresh air coming into rooms where a gas heater is in use. • Have your heater serviced every 12 months. Winter WINTER
Not a dry window in sight? There are some comforting things about Winter – snuggly socks, heavy blankets and cups of hot chocolate. However there are other things that aren’t so comforting, and one of those is condensation on windows. How often have you awoken to find water dripping off your windowsills, or you have felt dampness on your walls and/or furniture? What is condensation? How and why do you get it? And perhaps the most important question – how can you prevent it? It’s all to do with science. Condensation occurs when water vapour comes into contact with a cold, solid
surface like an exterior wall or a cold window. As this water vapour hits the cold surface, it converts into a liquid form. This then trickles down the window and often pools on the window sill. Water vapour can be produced by a range of sources. It could be from your breathing during the night, or it could be from cooking on your stovetop producing steam. Even the common act of drying washing on an airer in the living area can create water vapour. Because that water vapour needs to go somewhere it will evaporate into the air,

If you wake up feeling the chill, wishing spring would hurry up and arrive then spare a thought for the areas in the world that record the lowest temperatures. New Zealand climate scientists have detected the coldest day ever recorded in New Zealand, while looking at old New Zealand temperature records being entered into the National Climate database. The new record for our lowest recorded daily minimum temperature occurred at Ranfurly in Central Otago, in 1903: a shivering -25.6°C.
turning into a gas, then it’s drawn to the window glass where it converts back into a liquid. It’s most common to find condensation in winter due to the difference in the exterior and interior temperatures, and people might not open their windows as regularly as they would in warmer months. This then causes a build-up in excess moisture. To effectively tackle this issue, look at permanent opNewsuch Zealand 1st glazing in aluminium tions as double windows and doors. and home ventilation. Dancing ‘til he drops Blenheim teen, Joshua Leota, chats with reporter, Aimee O’Hagan, about how he came to be a dance teacher for local group, Bcre8ve, and why he loves to boogie. “Dance is a lot of different things. It’s a way to communicate, a way to express, and a way to connect.” That’s one of the reasons why dancing is so important to local 16 year-old, Joshua Leota, anyway. A choreographer for performing arts collective, Bcre8ve, Joshua says he has been in love with dancing since the age of five. “My mum founded Bcre8ve in Auckland,” Joshua says. “I grew up in a church with lots of dancers back in Auckland, so dance was pretty much all around me. “When I saw people dancing, it made me happy, so I gave it a try.” Joshua eventually started to pick up from those dancers, and was still happily moving and grooving when he and his family moved to Blenheim at the end of 2016.
“To me, dance is an expression.” It was then he was “taken under the wing” of fellow Aucklanders, Nicole Pereia and Vita Vaka, who had moved to Blenheim a couple of years beforehand to bring Bcre8ve to Marlborough. Nicole and Vita were the ones who gave Joshua the opportunity to “lead the dance stuff”. From that point onwa rds, Bcre8ve seemed to really take off. Joshua, Vita, and Nicole – alongside fellow locals, Kimi Young, Filimoe’ulie (Fili) Moala-Fotu, Destiny Aires, and Lynette Leota – began to hold dance classes each week for children aged five yearsold to adults aged 18 and over. “Bcre8ve’s mission is pretty much creativity with a purpose,” Joshua says. “We believe that what we perform has a purpose to it, so we use
it to touch on issues like suicide, drug and alcohol use, and stuff like that.” According to Joshua, the collective has approximately five to ten students in each age group. His favourite part of teaching is the fact that he gives kids “the fuel to chase their dreams”. “Not because it gives me an ego boost,” Joshua explains, “but because it just lets me know, oh shucks, I’m doing my job... Helping kids out and inspiring the next generation. “To me, dance is an expression. “It is a platform to worship God as he has given me this talent. “I use it to tell a story through my movements and reach out to the community. “You can’t reach everyone by just talking to them, some people respond differently.” Surprisingly, Joshua has only ever taken part in one dance competition. In January, Joshua joined together with fellow dancers, Kimi and Fili, and made a three-person dance crew. The three trained for six weeks, then travelled to Christchurch in March to dance in the regional NZ HipHop International Competition. Although the three did not get through to nationals, they did get third in the mini-crew division. “It was definitely ground-breaking,” Joshua says. “We were the first crew from Blenheim. “We want to go back next year, give it another go, take more crews from here... Put Blenheim on the map for dance.” For Joshua, his first competition was a “good learning curve” and a “wicked experience”. He hopes to continue using his love for dance to do good in the community, particularly to connect with those around him and inspire people to follow their passions.
Joshua Leota (16) loves to connect with people through dance.

Bride of the Year BEAVERTOWN BLENHEIM LIONS
Saturday 20th July | ASB Theatre
It’s here! The show of the year For those planning to attend this weekend’s Bride of the Year Show… Wow! There’s an incredible line up of brides, trade tables and show entertainment instore for Saturday evening so if you don’t already have your tickets, you still have time. In just three days’ time 24 gorgeous brides will take to the stage at ASB Theatre in their wedding gowns for the 2019 Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year. The show follows on from last year’s successful format beginning with a cocktail hour in the theatre’s foyer before the show commences at 7.30pm. At 6pm the doors will open and people are encouraged to go along, receive a glass of wine at the door and walk through the beautiful archway into the trade table area. There, a number of businesses will have their products and services on display while local band Double Shot performs for your enjoyment. There will be canapes served during this time and raffles and silent auctions will be running. In the main auditorium, MC’s Rick Devine-White and Tania Smith will open the show and call the brides out on to the stage which will feature a beautiful chapel scene. From there the 24 brides will be individually escorted out with their wedding music playing in the background. There will be some entertainment on stage before half time when guests can return to the foyer area where there will be wedding cake served and a cash bar. This will also be another opportunity to purchase raffle tickets and place bids on the silent auctions. In the second half of the show, the
brides will come back out on stage together one final time while the judges collate their points. This will be followed by more entertainment from the combined colleges cast of the Young Frankenstein as well as a World of Wearable Art display. Judges Arthur Devine-White, Jackie Halliday, Jessica Jones and special guest this year, last year’s winner Sarah Taylor, will reveal who has won the top three placings. There will also be an award for Best Bridal Shoes, Mrs Personality as voted by the brides themselves, Mrs Photogenic as judged by the Sun Newspaper and the Lucky Bride which is a cash draw sponsored by Bernadette Thomas. The committee behind this year’s show has worked extremely hard to bring together this show as well as collecting donated items from local businesses. Show convenor Noeline Stewart says without the support of local businesses the Bride of the Year show would not be the success it is. “We wish to thank all the supporting businesses as we are so grateful to you. This year’s show is going to be amazing and I’d like to thank our judges once again. “We are very excited. It’s going to be a fabulous show directed by Jeannie Mark featuring 24 beautiful brides who are all equally as excited as we are,” she says. Proceeds from this year’s show will be going towards Crossroads Marlborough Charitable Trust and other local charities. Tickets will be on sale at the ASB Theatre or online at Ticketek right through to the day of the show and cost $48 each.
Bookings open for 2019/2020 We can cater for both intimate gatherings and larger celebrations, our team will help deliver a truly memorable day.

Last year’s Bride of the Year Show winner, Sarah Taylor will be a guest judge alongside Arthur Devine-White, Jackie Halliday and Jessica Jones. This is the first time a winning bride has been invited to join the judging panel, a huge honour for Sarah. “I’m so so excited. I think I’m most excited about being on the other side of the show,” she says.
Sarah has already offered her advice for being on stage to this year’s brides at a recent ‘hens night’ event held by the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year committee. “I told the ladies that it can be nerve wracking but once you have done it, you get a sense of accomplishment for putting yourself out of your comfort zone,” she says. “What I’ll be looking for is how
people are feeling and enjoying themselves. Dress wise, I’ll be judging how their dresses fit their bodies and how their accessories compliment their overall look.” Sarah’s own wedding gown will be on display in the theatre foyer along with the winning gowns from 2017 and 2016. Sarah’s stunning gown was a Zavana design, purchased from To Cherish Bridal Boutique in

Don’t get the Hump, it’s still a great walk!
By Bill McElhinney Southland’s Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is now the country’s 11th Great Walk, beating the Queen Charlotte Track to become the ninth Great Walk in the South Island. The Queen Charlotte Track was shortlisted from a list of about 30 tracks into the top three for consideration as a Great Walk. The other two contenders were the Te Paki Coastal Track (Te Rerenga Wairua/Cape Reinga, Northland) and the Hump Ridge Track, which is now a Great Walk. While the Queen Charlotte Track was not selected, Marlborough is still immensely proud of their iconic regional track, Rob Burn, head of the Queen Charlotte Track Inc., says. “We will be lined up ready for another crack at gaining DOC endorsement of the Queen Charlotte Track as a Great Walk next time the opportunity comes up,” Rob says. The Queen Charlotte Track was formed in 1983 and is still managed through a partnership between DOC, Marlborough District Council and private landowners. The application to seek Great Walk status was collectively endorsed by all parties in the group. The Track is open all year round

and is served by a wide range of accommodation, transport and service providers who work together to tailor Track experiences to suit all levels of ability and budget. Between 10,000 – 15,000 people are now walking or biking on the Queen Charlotte Track each year.
The Queen Charlotte Track stretches 70 km from historic Meretoto/Ship Cove through to Anakiwa in the Grove Arm of Queen Charlotte Sound. The three to four day walk is renowned for its stunning ridgeline views and contrasting landscape,

NZ Highland Championships a ‘wonderful success’! By Aimee O’Hagan Over 200 dancers from around New Zealand gathered at ASB Theatre from Thursday to Sunday to show off their highland dancing skills. They were in Marlborough for the NZ Highland Championships; a national competition – principal teacher at Marlborough Academy of Dance, Robyn Simmons, says – which is “the main event on the calender for highland dancers” each year. The age of the dancers ranged from five to 25 years-old. Approximately 35 locals took part. “The hard work and effort put in by our dancers resulted in some stunning performances and awesome results,” Robyn says.
“We had so much positive feedback from dancers, teachers, parents, and supporters about what a fantastic event it was. “The highlight would have to be the spectacular success of the Marlborough Academy of Dance dancers.” Local dancers who achieved outstanding results include Zoe Blackmore, Jayna Potts, Mackenzie Woolley, Zoe Francis, Liliana Stebbings, Annabel Rea, Ana-Rose Offord, and Hannah Hunter. My name is Burnetta Haswell. I own and operate a private hairdressing styling Boutique here in Marlborough. I am a one-person business as I like to provide a one-on-one service in hairdressing and styling, and it’s my intention to always give the best of myself to the client. For me, it’s about the sensory and visual experience for my clients as it’s what I would want for myself. I have built my business around my knowledge of hairdressing, makeup styling, colour draping and my own clothing range - the Hazzi brand. I am doing what I love and being my authentic self, I feel the clients enjoy the ambiance and relaxation that I aim to create. To keep things interesting at BH Boutique, I regularly bring in new products and the range of clothing, jewellery, handbags, body and hair products I stock, all help me in assisting exactly what the client needs. When you come to BH Boutique, it’s me providing the whole experience which is something I put a lot of work into and take immense pride in. I provide a customised personal approach for your needs.
