Story and photos by Celeste Alexander “And the first place winner for the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show is… bride number 19 - Margie Simpson!” There was a moment of stunned silence from Margie as her name was called out, as it came as “a huge shock,” she says. The show, held at the ASB Theatre, was another great success with 201 tickets sold. Continued on page 2. Bride’s emotional win Continued from page 1. Margie was visibly emotional as she accepted her first place sash and bouquet of flowers, and she later told the Sun she was “still in shock”. “It was the last thing I was expecting… I honestly did not think I’d hear my name called,” she says. Margie, a chemical and process engineer, works at the Marlborough District Council with water and water treatment. She married Scottish husband Alan Simpson in 2017, however she has only recently moved home to Marlborough after living abroad for the past eight years. “We came home for family, to be closer to everyone here,” she says. It was her celebrant Yvonne Dasler who inspired Margie to enter the Bride of the Year Show, as the show was supporting the Crossroads Marlborough Charitable Trust of which Yvonne is a founder and trustee. “Yvonne is a good family friend and I wanted to support her by

coming along, but I never expected that I’d win anything,” Margie says. “I also entered with two of my friends, Emma-Jayne Tucker and Sara Marshall. “My first reaction was confusion and shock. I heard my name but it didn’t register… there are so many amazing brides here that I still can’t believe the judges picked me. “I’m really stunned!” Margie’s beautiful gown was purchased in Edinburgh, Scotland and featured a blush pink tint on the skirt. “Because I bought it and had it sent home I was stressing that it would turn out a baby pink colour, but it was perfect in the end,” she says. Asked how she would be celebrating her win, Margie says she was heading home “for sleep”. “We had a funeral to attend in the morning which was very emotional then I had to get ready for the show, so it’s been a long day. “I’m looking forward to telling my parents I won, then going to bed,” she smiles. The second place winner was

Anneliese Lindsay and in third place was Nicole Barlow. Mrs Personality as voted by the brides was awarded to Jodie Leslie, the Lucky Bride sponsored by Bernadette Thomas went to Larissa Friend, and the Mrs Photogenic as judged and sponsored by the Sun Newspaper went to Elyse Nicholas. Proceeds from this year’s Beavertown Blenheim Lions Show will be donated to the Crossroads Marlborough Charitable Trust and other local charities, convenor Noeline Stewart says. “I’m so pleased to say that it was a great event. We have received great feedback and everyone enjoyed the entertainment from the dancers, the WOW designs by Helen Millen, singers and performers. “Everyone supported our silent auctions and raffles which is fantastic, so thank you to everyone who purchased tickets, to the businesses which donated items to us and for everyone involved in the organising and running of the show,” Noeline says.

Queen of country pop?

inbrief

By Celeste Alexander Laura Maharey is used to working backstage for theatre productions, so it will be a brand new experience for her when she steps out on stage for the Stars in Your Eyes show on August 17. She will be performing as the best-selling female artist in country music history… can you guess who it is? That’s right, it’s Shania Twain! Laura auditioned for the Stars in Your Eyes show following a conversation with a fellow contestant who encouraged her to ‘go for it’. It was also Laura’s desire to represent a local charity close to her heart that provided the final bit of encouragement. “The other contestant I was speaking with said the show would be great fun and for a good cause, so I decided to take the leap,” she smiles. Originally from London, Laura is a professional seamstress and had trained in London’s West End theatre scene doing costume design. She worked on theatre productions such as The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King before moving to New Zealand eight years ago.

Book winners

It was in Christchurch where she met her husband Dave, who is currently the pastor at the Oasis Family Church. “I sing on the worship team at church and we did the Good Friday service this year onstage at the ASB Theatre, but that’s the closest I’ve come to anything like Stars in Your Eyes,” Laura jokes. When it came to choosing an artist to represent, Laura says it was her interest in country music that led her to Shania Twain. “I thought Shania would be fun to perform. She’s a bit of a loose cannon which is the polar opposite of myself,” she laughs. “It’s safe to say I’m very nervous but I’m embracing the fun side of it and of course, it’s charity focused which is amazing.” The song Laura has chosen to perform is “upbeat” and she’s basing her outfit on the music video she’s watching. “I’m almost finished sorting my outfit, and I’m so glad for the help with hair and makeup because it’s not something I do every day,” she says. Each of the nine contestants has chosen a local charity which will benefit from any

prize money from the show. Laura has chosen the Marlborough Community Development Trust. “It seeks to ensure people are valued and experience God’s love, as well as providing a number of programmes locally. One is the ‘7 habits for Highly Effective Teenagers’, one of the Trust’s most successful youth programmes which helps to prepare students for high school and beyond. “It also provides breakfast in the Blenheim and Mayfield Schools two mornings a week as well as all the stationery needs for those schools. It’s a great trust which I’m also involved in, and even if I don’t win any prize money it’s great to create an awareness of what the trust provides,” she says. The Stars in Your Eyes is a joint fundraising initiative for two local charities, Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation, and is being held at the ASB Theatre. Tickets are selling fast so to avoid missing out get yours at the ASB Theatre’s booking office, or at Stars www.ticketek.co.nz at the cost of $73 including fees.

Thieves steal fuel Thieves have been targeting the diesel fuel for vineyard frost fans, Blenheim Police say. Over 1500 litres of fuel has been syphoned from the fuel tanks next to a number of the fans. Also one vineyard has been the subject of wilful damage to vehicles and sprayers. A mini farm trailer-tanker has also been taken from a vineyard. It may be identifiable as it is old, yellow and rusty. Drawing short-listed! By Aimee O’Hagan Blenheim woman, Wendy Murphy, not only loves pondering the meaning of human existence; she is also passionate about creating images that explore it. The Marlborough Girls’ College art teacher has recently been shortlisted as a finalist for national drawing competition, the Parkin Drawing Prize. Over 470 artists from around New Zealand entered into the competition, and Wendy’s piece was one of 79 entries to make it through to the next stage. The winner of the competition will win an incredible $20,000, while the ten runner-ups are set to recieve $500 each. Wendy’s drawing is titled ‘Meditation

on Mortality’, which, according to her, is part of an “ongoing metaphysical investigation”. This is her second year being selected as a finalist and investigating the subject in her artwork. “I’ve been exploring [the theme] for a number of years now,” Wendy says. “It’s to do with the things that effect us, but the things that we don’t necessarily have direct reference to. “So, things that are very small – like pollen, or viruses, or a cellular structure – but also things that could be very large, like huge cosmic things.” For this year’s entry, she was particularly inspired by kiwi scientist Roy Kerr. Roy did a lot of work in the 1960s, effectively leading scientists from all over the world to get together,

Central Conveyancing Blenheim If you are looking to buy or sell a property or business and require the services of a property law specialist, then the person you should call is Paul O’Regan. Paul is a qualified and licensed con veyancing practitioner who can take care of the legal process when trans ferring the ownership of property from one person or entity to another. With the introduction of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act in 2006, this paved the way for a new profession for people to specialise in conveyancing. “People now have another option for legal services when it comes to buying and selling properties, businesses and refinancing mortgages. This can all be carried out by a conveyancer,” Paul says. Paul’s experience covers a vast area in cluding mortgages, finance, contracts and forming strong client relation ships due to his background in rural

and investment banking here and overseas. “I’ve worked in banking for 20 years and was always attracted to the chal lenge of property law… I guess it’s in my blood,” he says. “I come from a long line of lawyers and judges in cluding my late grandfather who was a prominent barrister and solicitor in Wellington, and still has his name on the firm there – O’Regan Arndt Peters & Evans.” Central Conveyancing Blenheim is the only specialist conveyancing firm in Blenheim’s CBD and with Paul’s banking experience he can also offer general business advisory services in the areas of business planning, agri business banking reviews and stressed asset management advice. share data, and create the first picture of a black hole. “I’ve done quite a few images to do with the solar system,” Wendy mentions. “Marlborough District Council bought one of my pictures to do with the thirty moons, which is part of the council collection. That’s also to do with this astrological theme.” Wendy specifically entered the competition as a “way of exhibiting” her work. For her, the contest simply provides a means through which her pieces can be seen by other people. All of the finalists’ artwork is set to be displayed at the Parkin Drawing Prize exhibition, which will be held at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington, from August 6 to September 8.

Ice-skating with intention By Aimee O’Hagan Last Thursday through to Sunday saw children and adults alike slipping and sliding on an indoor, artificial ice-skating rink, which was set up in Queen Charlotte College’s school hall. But they weren’t just putting their skates on for fun: they were doing it for a good cause. The rink was set up in an effort to fundraise money for 20 QCC students, all of whom are set to head to Kofu, Japan, in September, 2020. The biennial trip will consist of the pupils spending a week attending the college’s “sister school” in Japan. “There were 49 students that applied, but unfortunately, we could only accept 20 of them,” says QCC Japanese teacher and trip organiser, David Collins. “There were 14 students that went on the trip last year.” Despite the low cost (only a mere $2) for skaters to hire a pair of skates

and whizz around on the ice, the fundraising method has proved to be an effective one in past years. According to David, the students have done “a variety of other things” in order to fundraise for the trip. Such activities include wood-chopping (which has always been a hit in the Picton community), cleaning-up after local festivals, and more. “We’ve got two policies,” he says. “That we try to have no financial constraints and that the kids always put in the hard yards themselves.” For David, the fundraising phase is a valuable one. Not only do the students get to raise the money required all by themselves, but they also gain people skills and make special memories along the way. “There’s some great spin-offs too. The kids get to bond with each other and also deal with people in the community,” he says. Lucy Stephens, Courtney Mathieson, and Charlotte Brooke-Taylor.

Leos mark 15 years of service By Celeste Alexander In 2004, a group of Marlborough Girls’ College students were given a taste of community volunteerism through the introduction of a Leo Club. The Leo programme was developed to provide the youth of the world with an opportunity for personal development through volunteering, and there are 7000 clubs in over 140 countries – 30 of which are in New Zealand. The programme, aimed at youth aged 12-18 years of age, was started at the college by the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Club with Bill Thomas, who was the teacher at the time. Over the 15 years it has been running it has gone from strength to strength.

The students who take part in the Leo Club enjoy a range of projects throughout the year, supported by Leo advisor Lesley Ayson for the last six years and Dawn Hammond. These students work hard in between their schoolwork to help the local community by ways of running a BBQ at Bunnings, selling raffle tickets, volunteer work at John’s Kitchen, book fairs and even helping at Blenheim horse racing events with gate keeping. Just last year alone, the girls gift wrapped new toys donated to them by the Blue Door and delivered them to the Marlborough Women’s Refuge, Marlborough Community Foodbank, the Wairau Hospital’s Emergency Department, the Child Cancer Foundation and the Marl-

The problem with batteries Dear Ed, I am a fan of battery powered vehicles and hope to one day own a battery powered car. What everyone seems to ignore is the impact of batteries on the environment. Firstly is the fact that most of the materials for batteries are mined from the ground just the same as iron, bauxite for aluminium, gold and all the minerals and heavy metals required for all the marvellous technology we accept today. Lithium, the key ingredient in most batteries now, is mined in just a few countries around the world. Australia, South America, Canada, China and a few other small areas. P robably t he most se rious problem is the lack of recycling available for

Set net ban in the wind Dear Ed, It’s time Marlborough’s recreational fishers woke up and stopped being so apathetic. According to a good, credible source the government, driven by the ideological often unrealistic Green Party, is to bring in a ban on all set netting for recreational, commercial and customary along our coastlines. Recreational set netting was already discriminated against as it was restricted to four months of the year while commercial fishing enjoyed 12 months. The proposal ‘in the wind’ is supposedly to protect dolphins. To my knowledge, no dolphin has been caught in a recreational set net around Marlborough’s coast.

Most recreational nets are used to target moki and butterfish and are set in close to rocks and kelp, which is not dolphin habitat. To avoid predator’s ambushing them, dolphins inhabit open water. This is yet another state intrusion into New Zealanders outdoor heritage. What the Green Party, government and local council should be doing is addressing the alarming habitat decline both inside and outside our Sounds by the siltation and excessive aquaculture that is still increasing. all the vehicle batteries for cars, trucks, buses, e-bikes, e-scooters, e-tools and all the other gadgets now available to society and run by battery power. We are all aware of the problem with the plastic waste polluting the world, and given the life of most rechargeable batteries is about 5 to 10 years, what are we going to do with the stock pile of toxic waste created by all the redundant batteries? This is a cautionary comment. We must fix the problem before it gets out of hand and society ends up with another disaster. Get over the euphoria of battery powered everything and make sure there is not another environmental crisis. Octogenarian Blenheim

Private Nathan Connell helps Department of Conservation staff and volunteers clean up rubbish scattered across Fox River.

Air Force joins Army and Navy in Fox River rubbish drive By Bill McElhinney Air Force personnel have joined Navy and Army forces to help remove tonnes of rubbish strewn across two of Westland’s pristine rivers and coastline. The Department of Conservation estimates about 2100 hectares, equivalent to 3000 rugby fields, have been contaminated with rubbish spilt from a disused landfill near Fox River during severe flooding in March. More Navy, Army and Air Force personnel flew to Christchurch on a Royal New Zealand Air Force Boeing 757 aircraft on Monday and then took the seven-hour bus journey to Fox Glacier. “We hope these personnel will boost DOC’s efforts to clean up the rubbish,” Rear Admiral Jim Gilmour, the Commander Joint Forces New Zealand, says. The affected areas include parts of Westland Tai Poutini National Park, Te Wahipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area, Waiau Glacier Coast Marine Reserve and a mataitai reserve. DOC operations manager in South Westland, Wayne Costello, says the Defence Force personnel would lead the clean-up of a zone which runs from the confluence of

Fox River and Cook River to the Tasman Sea, and an area which is about 60 kilometres long and runs along the coastline stretching from the mouth of the Karangarua River to North Okarito Lagoon. “The rubbish is so dense in the upper reaches that our efforts with volunteers need to be focussed here. We are at day 35 and so far have cleared 30 per cent of the

area,” Wayne says. “It’s awesome to be able to split up the tasks and know that the NZDF team will just get on and get it done. “At the same time, the NZDF support of the volunteer operations in the field has been absolutely essential – getting the volunteers on-site, moving the portable toilets, picking up the

500 kilogram bags of rubbish. It’s been a great team effort.” The NZDF is deploying, in phases, up to 70 personnel, vehicles and aircraft to support the Fox River clean-up. It currently has 18 New Zealand Army personnel and eight vehicles in Westland. Helicopter support will start in late July to help remove bags of rubbish from remote locations.

Zoe’s kilted journey Local 16 year-old, Zoe Blackmore, is the youngest highland dancer in the New Zealand Highland Dance Company. She chats with reporter, Aimee O’Hagan, about the highs and lows of her chosen sport, and where her next venture with the company will take her. From the Irish Hornpipe, to the Sword Dance, to the Highland Fling – Blenheim teenager, Zoe Blackmore, can dance them all. She’s been highland dancing with the Marlborough Academy of Dance since the age of five. Despite nearing the end of her years at secondary school, she is still just as passionate about performing as ever. In fact, the Marlborough Girls’ College student has been a committed member of the NZ Highland Dance Company for two years. The company is made up of approximately 20 champion highland dancers from around New Zealand, all aged from 14 to about 25. Zoe is one of the youngest dancers to have auditioned and successfully “make it in”. “In April last year, we went to New York and performed in the Virginia International Tattoo.” Zoe says. “That was an amazing experience. It was just... awesome.

“It’s good to push yourself to always do better.” “We performed in four big shows in this massive arena with bands and people, and it was crazy. We did heaps of little festivals during the day, which was so cool.” Spending two weeks in the U.S. allowed Zoe and the rest of the dancers enough time to train, perform, and fit in plenty of sightseeing and the usual “touristy things”! Her connection with the group has not only taken her to America, but will also take her to Western Europe in September this year. Belgium is the country that the company will be travelling to, and where they will again be participat-

ing in a “massive tattoo” alongside other highland dancers “from all over the world”. But not all of Zoe’s dancing is done overseas. She’s had plenty of other opportunities back in Blenheim to show Marlborough audiences just how well she can dance. Only a week and a half ago, Zoe competed in the NZ Highland Championships (proudly hosted by the ASB Theatre Marlborough). Not only did she win the NZ Championship Under 18 Irish Hornpipe, but she was also named Runner-up NZ Champion in the Under 18 section. All of Zoe’s dance exams have been achieved with honours (the highest grade one can get) and best of all, she is seen as an idol of sorts by all of the younger students in the Marlborough Academy of Dance. “Jayna [Potts] and I are the only seniors that dance here,” Zoe explains. “All the little kids in the studio are so cute – they look up to us, which is nice,” she smiles. But constantly being surrounded by much younger dancers isn’t always what Zoe wants or needs. For Zoe, one of the best parts about doing competitive highland dancing is that she has made “so many friends” that are not only her own age, but also love doing what she does. “When we come to Nationals, the dance company is full of all our friends that we get to see when we’re away,” she says. “Another positive has been seeing my progress [over the years]. “It’s good to push yourself to always do better!” In Zoe’s opinion, there’s only one particularly challenging “downfall” about her commitment to highland dancing. “It takes up a lot of time! “Because highland is such a time consuming sport, I had to make the decision at around age 13 whether or

not I wanted to focus on it or try and balance other sports, too. “I was one of those kids who wanted to play every sport so this was super hard for me, but I let go of all my other sports to focus on highland. Despite not having many days after

school or time on the weekends to spend time doing other things she loves, Zoe says “it’s so worth it”. When asked if she has any inspirational advice for others who aim to succeed in their chosen field, the teenager has plenty to say.

“Take the support and encouragement from the people that love you,” she advises. “There’s always complications to things in life and nothing’s easy without hard work, so stay positive.” “If you want it, then fight for it.”

Sailing towards success By Aimee O’Hagan Waikawa Bay 13 year-old, Eden Amos, is the only girl from Marlborough to be selected for prestigious sailing group, the NZ International Optimist Dinghy Association 2019 Girls Development Team. In October, she and nine other girls from around NZ will be travelling to Noumea, New Calidonia, to sail in the international sporting event, the New Caledonian National Optimist Regatta. Eden will be overseas for approximately 10 days. In order to pay for flights, food, accomo-

dation, training, coaching, and more, Eden needs around $4000. For her, the trip is a “big deal”. Surprisingly, she has only been sailing for two seasons. According to Eden, one of the most “exciting” parts about being selected is that she gets to wear an iconic black and white uniform to show she is representing New Zealand. It will even have a silver fern embroidered on it! The teenager’s favourite part of sailing is the connections she makes with other like-minded girls and boys. “We don’t get to see a lot of

people or converse daily with other people because we’re home-schooled,” Eden says. “I like the teamwork and being with other people around my age who have the same sailing ability as me.” The growing connections between members of the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club have caused the club to become a tight-knit community. “We’re just one big family, down at the yacht club,” Eden says. She and her family welcome members of the public to attend

Boogie woogie Jan on the way! By Bill McElhinney P ia n ist Ja n P reston grew up in Greymouth in a working class family where the piano was centre stage. One aunt who used to play for the silent movies would be on boogie/ stride style piano, another on the violin, accompanied by other family members on an assortment of percussive cutlery playing honky tonk tunes and radio favourites of yesteryear. “I always had a strong sense of t he beat of rhythm,” Jan says. “My mot her tel ls hair-raising stories of me rocking my cot so heavily at the age of one that it moved across the room.” “You’re rocking again Jan,” her Mum would say. “Me no rocky,” would come the tot’s reply. Growing up with sister Gaylene (now a Dame for her services to film-making: ‘’We’re terribly proud of her,’’ Jan says) Jan start-

But it was hearing pianist Winefred Attwel play boogie-woogie and ragtime that really made an impression. ‘’She was one of the first non-classical pianists I heard,’’ Jan says. A f ter complet i ng a classical music degree in Auckland she moved to Wellington where she became involved in cabaret with Red Mole - an independent political satirical theatre group in the 1970s - which played in a strip joint in Cuba St. ‘’It was there I left classical music behind. I love playing boogie-woogie, it’s uplifting, it’s fast,” Jan says. Jan says she’s obsessed with pianos and has a room full of them. “I have, much to my hus-

She travels back to New Zealand to play concerts several times a year with her husband, Mike Pullman, who plays drums. ‘’We met at Colenso High School, in Napier.’’ Jan is bringing her show, “88 Pianos I have known,” to Blenheim and Picton next month, with a show in the Boathouse Theatre on Friday, August 2, and at the Little Theatre in Picton on Sunday, August 4.
