By Celeste Alexander When someone is lost, missing, or injured in Marlborough, a call goes out to Land Search and Rescue (LandSAR) volunteers who respond to assist Police with the search and rescue operations. Last Friday evening saw a team of five respond to a callout at Picton where a retiree who was volunteering for the Picton Dawn Chorus rat trapping pro-

LandSAR team locates lost man Continued from page 1. For people who find themselves in situations where a walk or a hike takes longer than expected, there’s no better feeling than hearing the calls from people searching for them. For LandSAR Marlborough volunteers, the best feeling comes when there’s a positive outcome from a search, bringing the person home safe to their families. This was the case on Friday evening. Volunteers Lew Bright, Dean Boyce and Mark Lucas met at the Blenheim Police station where fellow volunteer Julie Neal was based in communications. After a debrief and gathering of what intel was available, the team headed to Picton. We arrived around 9:10pm at the carpark entrance to the Snout Track where we geared up. Searchers are equipped with what they call a 48-hour pack, hand held radios, maps and warm clothing. The search began quickly as we headed up the track as ‘team 2’ to where ‘team 1’, including team leader Shaun Crabb and Andrew Wheeler, were already in place. Following intel that was regularly updated from Julie back at the communications base, the combined team scoured several tracks and bush area, looking and listening for signs of the lost man. After stopping for a brief moment, we heard the crackling of branches down below the track we were on, prompting the team leader to call out in the hope of receiving an answer. And at 10.45pm, there it was! The sound we were all waiting for – a distant reply from the man we were searching for which provided huge relief to the team. We followed the sound to a lower gully area where the team split into two, one heading down a steep and slippery path to reach the man while

myself and Lew Bright headed back to the carpark to set up a control point base. As we waited for confirmation from the searching team that they had located the man, Lew explained how the search and rescue process worked. Lew had been involved in LandSAR when it first began in Picton. He was working at the Picton freezing works when the Police used to run the search and rescue. With a number of the men at the works having considerable back country knowledge, they became part of the search and rescue efforts. Now retired, Lew is part of the Alzheimers team, helping to locate people with dementia who wander off, as well as being the driver who takes the field teams out to the search areas. At 11.30pm the search team radio through that they have located the man and are walking him out. Team leader Shaun confirmed the man is uninjured and simply came ‘unstuck’ when trying to climb back up to a higher track. “He had done all the right things by staying put where he was and phoning for help. We were able to guide him down and assist him back. He was in good spirits and overall the whole team did a good job. “It’s a great feeling knowing we have helped someone,” he says. Once the man was safely on his way home, the team headed back to the Police station for a final debrief after midnight before heading home for a well-deserved sleep. LandSAR is a national volunteer organisation which provides land search and rescue services to lost, missing and injured all over New Zealand. Volunteers operate in suburban, urban, wilderness and rural areas including regional and forest parks, shorelines and caves. Volunteers are unpaid professionals who offer their skills free to the public 24/7 and undergo comprehensive

Sequins and glam

inbrief

By Celeste Alexander Will there be a sequin shortage in Blenheim after Sara Bishell’s performance as Cher in the up and coming Stars in Your Eyes Show? There’s no way of knowing until she steps out on stage on August 17 at the ASB Theatre to take on the persona of a glam pop star who has dominated the music scene for decades. There is one thing we can know for sure, Sara confirms, and that is there won’t be any of Cher’s iconic see-through outfits in the show. “No way,” she laughs. “I won’t be channelling any of her 80s costumes that’s for sure! But I will be wearing an outfit and wig that is ‘out there’ to look as close to her stage performance as possible for the song I’ve chosen,” she says. Sara is one of nine contestants taking part in the joint fundraising initiative for two local charities – Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation. She is already a dance teacher and national champion in highland dancing, a GP and mother to a 16-month old son, but it was during her time at university that she added singing to her repertoire of skills and talents.

Wanted man shot

“Singing was foreign to me and I never sung until I had a year off from uni when I did the Chicago musical… and I loved it! “I grew up dancing but being part of a musical alongside other people was really amazing. So with singing I’ve enjoyed the challenge of developing another skill,” she says. Sara has been taking singing lessons with local voice coach Con O’Brien for around three years now, so when she heard the Stars in Your Eyes show was returning to Blenheim she decided to audition. The preparation that is going into her performance as Cher involves not only learning the song, but also studying Cher’s on stage performance and movements. “At this stage I’m very nervous but I think once I’ve practised the song enough to feel more confident, the nerves will die down and more of the adrenaline nerves will kick in,” she laughs. “But I am also very excited,” she adds. Each of the contestants has nominated a local organisation or charity which will benefit from any prize money from

A man who was shot by Police in Blenheim on Sunday afternoon is in a stable condition at Wairau Hospital. The man, who was wanted by Police, failed to stop on State Highway 1 and subsequently spikes were deployed and the vehicle came to a stop at an intersection of Hardings Rd. The accused was shot in the arm after he threatened Police with a knife. After being shot the accused has then tried to get into a Police vehicle and flee. The accused was challenged by Police staff, arrested and first aid was given. He was unable to appear in court on Monday, and has been remanded in custody by consent until July 31.

the show. Sara has chosen the Blenheim Playcentre. “I grew up going to Playcentre and now with my own son, I’ve started taking him along. “I really enjoy how it’s parent-led and focused on the child, while supporting them to develop their skills while playing.

“The support there is amazing for parents and it’s reliant on volunteers and parents which is why I chose them,” she says. Tickets are selling fast, so to avoid missing out get yours at the ASB Theatre’s booking office, or at www.ticketek.co.nz at the cost of $73, including fees.

Caseys Creek upgrade The first phase of work on futureproofing Caseys Creek, which runs alongside Old Renwick Road, is now complete. O ve r t h e p as t si x m o nths , vegetation and debris have been removed and nine culverts have been replaced with new crossings with larger pipes. All works will increase the creek’s ability to take stormwater for the North West Development Zone of Blenheim (north of Old Renwick Road), which will provide an estimated 720 houses over the next 50 years.

Local eighteen year-old, Shannon McLean, is one of 22 students from across New Zealand to be chosen for the Global Development Tour 2020 Delegation.

Shannon’s going global By Aimee O’Hagan “You create your own opportunities; you’ve just gotta look out for them.” That’s the inspirational advice of local 18 year-old, Shannon McLean, anyway. And what’s more – she definitely knows what she’s talking about. The Marlborough Girls’ College prefect is one of 22 young kiwis from around New Zealand to have been selected for the prestigious Global Development Tour 2020 Delegation, which is run by charitable organisation, UN Youth New Zealand. In January next year, she and the group will go on a 29 day tour of Europe and North America to visit multiple United Nations sites; including sites in exciting locations such as London, Paris, New York, and Vienna. All of the places the students are set to visit are relevant to the 2030 Agenda for

Sustainable Development. The delegation will get the chance to meet with policy-makers, leaders of non-profit organisations and other international agencies, and more. The trip, as described by Shannon herself, is certainly a “one-off opportunity”. But it will be no easy task to get there: in total, the trip will cost around $10,000. When asked how she came across such an incredible opportunity, Shannon says that it was simply mentioned to herself and the other MGC year 13s by their dean. “I looked into it a bit further and it was a week until the applications were due,” Shannon says. Two references, a CV, long answers to multiple questions, and a photo of herself later, Shannon handed the 1000 word application in just as it was due. It didn’t take long to hear about

whether or not she had been shortlisted. “I found out later that day [that I had been shortlisted]... I was so happy!” Shannon exclaims. “At that stage I was thinking, oh wow, this would be such an amazing trip to go on, and I was getting pretty excited about it.” A week after being interviewed by the four trip directors via video call, Shannon was told that she had been selected. “My parents were so proud. “I’m still starstruck that I got it. It all happened so fast. “I don’t want to take it for granted... I’m going to take it to every advantage that I can.” Shannon hopes this chance will help her decide exactly what she wants to do for her future career. Her current plan involves starting up her own social enterprise, but she does not yet know what the enterprise’s aim will be. “Hopefully I’ll be able to find some worthy causes for my

social enterprise,” Shannon says. “When people ask me what I’m looking forward to about the trip, I just say I’m looking forward to everything. “I’m interested in ethics, waste and recycling, environmental stuff, UN women... I was watching videos on YouTube of UN women, and Meghan Markle is one. Like, imagine if I got to meet her. “I still have to pinch myself. I mean, it’s the United Nations! “It’s really important to know that just because you’re from Blenheim, it doesn’t mean you can’t get opportunities like this.” Shannon’s next step is to find and approach businesses to ask for help funding the trip. “I’m trying to be really creative, because $10,000 is a lot,” she says. Renwick’s new water reservoir on the way By Bill McElhinney The days of water bans and water restrictions for Renwick residents are coming to an end. Work on Renwick’s new water reservoir is well underway with ground strengthening and stabilising almost complete. Fulton Hogan was awarded the contract for the project in February and since then they have been preparing the site for the construction of the new reservoir, which will be three times bigger than the town’s existing storage capacity. The aquifer at the Renwick bores continued to drop last summer, and Renwick residents had to conserve water, with peak demand dropping by 25 per cent. The current water storage tanks, which were installed in the 1970s, have reached the

end of their useful life. Council planning and development engineer, Stuart Donaldson, says once the ground improvement works are complete the floor slab will be laid before construction of the 1500m3 reinforced, pre-stressed concrete reservoir, at 24 River Terrace gets underway. “While the ground works are taking place, the reservoir’s concrete pre-cast wall panels are being poured and stored off-site. The same method is applied to the reservoir’s roof tees. “This means that as soon as the concrete slab is poured in October, we’re all lined up and ready to progress construction as soon as possible,” Stuart says. Due to the constrained size of the site, construction of Renwick’s new water treat-

ment plant can only begin after the reservoir is completed in July 2020. “This is only the first step in a significant investment in long-term water management for Renwick. “The other main steps involve completing new wells at Conders Bend, installing the pipeline from the wells to the new water treatment plant, constructing the treatment plant and introducing a water meter system. “Once the three year work programme is complete, the community will have a safe and secure supply that meets national drinking water standards,” Stuart says. The project is funded by the council’s combined water scheme, which spreads the cost of capital water projects across all municipal supplies in Marlborough.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street.

Q: Do you think there should be stricter penalties surrounding illegal phone usage (texting, calling, etc) while driving?

Aaron Wilson Blenheim Yes, why not? All forms of breaking the law while driving are just as bad as each other.

Alex Aldridge Blenheim Yes, I do. It’s so easy to get away with. If there were stricter penalties, people would think twice about doing it.

Gerry Marriott Blenheim Yes, but increasing charges isn’t going to make any difference if they don’t catch the people who are breaking the law.

Katrina Flynn Blenheim Yes, because it is so dangerous. There should be more demerit points.

Nola Tanner Blenheim Absolutely. It’s their safety as well as everybody else’s. It’s not only them who suffer the consequences.

Wendy Webster Blenheim No, I think it’s pretty fair at the moment. They could probably do with a higher fine, though.

Simon’s not the problem Dear Ed, The National Party still seems to be riven with internal division over the leadership, but I think they are missing the point. The issue is not Simon Bridges. He’s a decent bloke. The issue is the hard-line Nats who fail to see that a large number of middle class Kiwis do want to see a fairer, more inclusive society. If National want to look to someone like Judith Collins to lead them to victory, they are sorely mistaken. Three years ago Judith Collins sold her luxury Maraetai holiday home for $1.9 million. She bought the property with her husband in 2006

for $1.17m, meaning they pocketed $730,000 in capital gain from the sale. Now Ms Collins and her husband, David Wong-Tung, are suing the Nelson City Council and a Nelson couple seeking $180,000 for remedial works and lost rental income, plus other costs, after a landslip almost eight years ago damaged a rental property they have in Nelson. The Nelson couple say they feel bullied and stressed over the lawsuit. I don’t think this is the sort of inclusive leadership most New Zealanders are looking for. Swinging Voter Blenheim

No excuse for abuse Dear Ed, I am so disgusted and embarrassed by the number of dear little babies and children who die and are abused in this country. What’s wrong with the carers and parents? Oh yes-they don’t know how to parent-what a pathetic excuse. None of us do. They get excused for being on drugs and drink. I am appalled-sick of the excuses-how could anyone hurt a dear wee

helpless child? They deserve the same done to them. I am so angry-doesn’t anyone care? We are born with an inbuilt instinct to care for our young, and the elderly. It’s time to harden up and show real tough love and forget the excuses people make. A New Zealander Blenheim

Let’s learn from Slovenia Dear Ed, Another food-for-thought film on Maori TV, a refuge from the howling wilderness of most channels. Michael Moore is down cried by hierarchies in the US because he shines a light on how things are and how they might be made to be. “Where To Invade Next” showed what non-militaristic countries, free from any military-industrial complex as was warned against by old soldier President Ike, can

achieve using free healthcare, free education, decent leave provisions and the like. I was particularly interested in Moore’s take on Slovenia, knowing its capital, Ljubljane, manages to recycle 68 per cent of its rubbish, having worked out that landfills are no answer at all. I wonder if, as part of a coalition of the willing, we could “invade” Slovenia and carry off the means to treat our rubbish wisely? Bill Holvey Blenheim

Henrick Moller and Dima Ivanov from Flip the Fleet, electric vehicle advocates, with an electric powered Nissan Leaf, the most popular EV in New Zealand.

Electric cars and batteries Dear Ed, My industrial electricians tell me that an electric car is the draw equivalent of four houses on average. I was talking to a solar engineer recently and he was regaling me with the story of an electric car household who blacked out the whole street for three weeks when they overloaded the system. Cramming the draw of four to eight extra houses on to every section is never going to work, not here with our very weak infrastructure, not anywhere that I can think of really, unless we adopt massive load shifting. What am I talking about, moving your usage to another time? No, I am talking about massive local and even in home load shifting with supplemental lithium ion batteries, currently very expensive still and likely to remain the plaything of people with money to burn. I have had the commercial

division of Tesla sales and their engineers run through with me one of their projects in Auckland where infill housing, 20 stories, threatened to take out their grid. The lead time and sheer ghastly cost of dealing with the Resource Management Act meant they could not redevelop the local infrastructure in time. The lead time for projects like this can run many years easily. They had to install a massive industrial Tesla battery farm and inverter farm, cost in excess of $20 million. I would suggest that proposing large scale adoption of electric vehicles is anti science and mischievous. The mineral resources are not there to achieve it nor do we have the money as a society to tolerate this sort of social engineering in an often mountainous, thinly occupied country Keith Adams Blenheim

Dima Ivanov from FlipTheFleet.org. responds. Your industrial electricians appear to telling you a part of the story only. I live in Auckland, and a company called Vector is the lines authority around here. From my previous discussions with them, a single phase 63-ampere supply is standard for Auckland houses. So let’s assume that 63 amps is the “average” that your electrician is referring to. The Nissan Leaf is the most popular electric car (EV) in New Zealand by a long shot. And most of the Leafs are capable of charging at 16 amps maximum current. If you wanted to charge it even slower – you can! Portable “travel” chargers only take 8 amps, meaning, you can plug them in instead of a toaster or a vacuum cleaner. At 8 amps that’s required to charge a Leaf overnight, you’re using only ONE EIGHTH of a households power supply. In other words, a single house is capable of charging eight EVs simultaneously. As for blacking out a whole street, sounds like a great story to me, but a little bit hard to believe. Typically, there will be a fuse at the pole next to the house, and if a house exceeds its draw, the fuse on the pole will blow, cutting the power to the house, but protecting the street. Perhaps, there was no pole fuse installed in this case? I’m not sure what you mean by the reference to load shifting, but I think you will find it very interesting to read up on

electricity line peak demand. And I’m sure you agree that it’s not sensible putting a petrol station that can fill a tank in one minute on everyone’s driveway – but we all tend to keep a jerry can for the lawnmower at home. Same with EV chargers – the very powerful ones are placed at dedicated high-traffic areas (like petrol stations), but the slower ones are for home use. On the issue of moving usage to another time: Many electricity retailers offer significant discounts for night-time use, which is – as it happens – the time you’re least likely to use your EV. Best of both worlds! Just like plugging in your phone to charge at night. Is the large scale adoption of electric vehicles anti science? This suggestion is, perhaps, similar to saying: “It’s wise to restrict people’s use of computers and charging of mobile phones to libraries and public places only.” Most people charge their laptops at home by plugging in a charger into the wall. An EV can be charged by plugging in a charger (called an EVSE) into the same socket on the same wall. No new infrastructure is required. Dima Ivanov holds a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Transport Design (Massey University Scholar, 1st Class Hons) and is also an advisory board member to Massey University Master of Business Analytics course.

one on one with the Sun

Be brave, be strong “Strong and empowered women and girls create a stronger world”. This is the belief of Blenheim woman Sarah McAlister of Warrior Women Coaching who is on a mission to change the world, as reporter Celeste Alexander finds out. Mental health is a serious issue – and on a global level! It affects anyone, anywhere and at anytime. It can strip a person’s confidence and self-worth and can stem from a wide range of issues. Fortunately, and according to Sarah, there’s been a ‘tidal wave’ of awareness around mental health and even abuse in recent times. “On a daily basis youth are struggling with anxiety and questioning their self-worth, which is heart-breaking,” she says. “With the likes of social media we are continually bombarded with the Kardashian image of perfection. It’s these glam magazine standards which make you want to look a certain way. “The thing is, your life doesn’t have to be like what the magazines show and what social media says you must be like. It’s OK to pull back from that and embrace you! “We need to step back and look at ourselves, to recognise what’s not working and what’s dragging us down and clean those things up. And for those who can see their friends and loved ones hurting, let’s support these people who are struggling. “Going back to who I was and accepting everything about myself was the most enlightening thing I ever did,” she says. Sarah operates Warrior Women Coaching which focuses on health and wellness coaching, goal setting, confidence building, lifestyle changes and advice on nutrition. It’s also common to see Sarah and her ‘warrior women’ walking the Wither Hills and other walking tracks around the region, which she says has proved to be a great way for women to connect. “Having a set day or time to get moving and having other like-minded people to join you is a hugely motivating factor that keeps you on track,” she says. This she does in her spare time. The rest of her days are spent working for Active Families as part of the PHO, as well as volunteering for Marlbor-

ough Women’s Refuge’s Crisis Line. She also recently signed up for the Marlborough Land Search and Rescue volunteer organisation. “I love being busy,” she laughs. In past years Sarah has worked for the Women’s Refuge here and on the West Coast, influenced by her upbringing and time as a teenage mother.

“Be the women you want your daughters to be, the friend you need, the sister you crave, be brave and be strong!” Sarah was born in Marlborough, the sixth of eight children. Unfortunately, her mother struggled, which resulted in Sarah growing up in the foster system. She experienced an abusive childhood, received little to no education, depression, and then a teenage pregnancy. At the age of 16 she found herself with a baby under the care of Women’s Refuge, trying to be strong for herself and her infant daughter. “I grew up with child abuse and was taught that I wasn’t worth anything, so as I grew up I learned to accept less. “I remember one day at the refuge a young woman not much older than I came in. She had no shoes on, a singlet, and a mini skirt. She was bruised and sore from a beating she’d received. “She had her three children with her, a baby wrapped in a nappy, one in a bathmat and the other in a towel. She had made a quick escape through the bathroom window while bathing them… I couldn’t believe that she was so beautiful yet someone still treated her like that. “This really stuck with me, so now I help women to focus on looking

Sarah McAlister has experienced love, loss and hardship throughout her life and is now empowering other women and families.

at their environments and the things they are not happy with, and then look at cleaning up that environment,” she says. When asked what advice she has for anyone, particularly women and young girls, who are dealing with negative self-thoughts, anxiety or depression, she says; “There are many things which can help.

Good sleep, the right nutrition and most importantly - taking a step back and looking at ourselves to see what’s not working and what’s dragging us down. “It might mean that we need to disconnect from people wo are not making us happy or unfollowing people or posts on social media. “If you have friendships where

people are constantly looking to ‘one-up’ you… just say to them ‘if you want to compete, go run a race’, then take a step back from them,” she says. “Be honest about how you are feeling and share it with someone. There’s help, support and great mental health services and advocates in the community.”

Te Piki Oranga celebrates five years

Te Piki Oranga Marlborough general manager, Anne Hobby, cuts the delicious birthday cakes!

FREE JAZZ CONCERTS NEXT WEEK

By Aimee O’Hagan On Monday morning, the beautiful sound of a waiata could be heard coming from the Te Piki Oranga quarters in central Blenheim. If one had looked into it further, they would have found a room full of smiling staff members, a table covered with delicious and healthy kai, and two, big birthday cakes. The staff at Marlborough’s Te Piki Oranga were busy celebrating the Maori health organisation’s fifth birthday. Since the organisation was established half a decade ago, it has grown rapidly. With three hubs across t he top of t he sout h regions, including the Blenheim-based hub, Te Piki Oranga has over 19 services available. According to general manager of Te Piki Oranga Marlborough, Anne

Hobby, a near 3,000 Maori utilise the organisation’s “health, social health, and wellbeing services”. The most recent “service innovation” created is ‘Tuhono’, a personalised programme for specific, Maori families to give babies the best possible start in life. “We have grown by 30 percent in the past five years,” Anne says. “There is no question we are secure in our own self and where we are going for our people. “We feel ext remely thankful and honoured to all of our kaimahi, partners, and the 2920 people who use our services. “All have been part of our journey thus far, just as we have been part of their journey. “We deeply appreciate the contribution of everyone in helping us revitalise whanau for their future.”

Clubs quiz nights help local school funds By Bill McElhinney Getting the answers right is going to help scoot things along at Mayfield School. The Clubs of Marlborough run a popular weekly quiz night with up to 35 teams taking part. “At one stage we had 48 teams at quiz night,” Clubs bar manager, Gareth Assink, says. Glenn Kirby is the quizmaster and the quiz night participants are family teams, teams of friends and workmates. Entry is $5 per team and there is a cash jackpot to end the night on a high, as well as prizes for first, second, random and second to last. At the end of the school term, the team that Gareth Assink, Clubs of Marlborough, Janet Udy from the successful Clubs quiz team, Lee Davis, Clubs CEO and Mayfield School pirincipal David Nott with the school scooter rack which will be updated with the Clubs donation.

accrues the most points gets to donate $500 to a school of their choice. Last week Janet Udy, representing winning quiz team Microbes, joined Clubs CEO and Gareth to present $500 to Mayfield School principal David Nott. “My three children went to Mayfield, so I was happy to choose them this time,” Janet says. Other schools have benefitted from the quiz night donations, which is great, Lee says. “The funds are generated by the community and we can give them back to the community.” Mayfield introduced Tuesday and Thursday scooter days, David says. Pupils can bring their scooters to school and ride them during breaks, and it has been a popular innovation. “I knocked up a stand for the scooters,” David says, “but it really needs to be replaced, so this money will go towards making a new stand for the kids to park their scooters.”
