Snowy returns By Celeste Alexander Snowy the snowman made his much anticipated return to Blenheim over the weekend, thanks to the efforts of two winter-loving families. Building a snowman in Blenheim for the public to enjoy has become a fun tradition for Aimee and Tristan Moore, Adam and Alice Le Brun, and all of their children. This was their fourth year of making a snowman in Blenheim. The families went four-wheel driving up the Awatere Valley where they loaded up their utes with snow at the top of the hill to bring back to town, to build Snowy at the Blenheim Train Station carpark. He proved to be a popular attraction on Sunday. Many families took delight in seeing Snowy and being able to touch the snow, however it didn’t take long before some people decided to damage it. “We are happy that so many people got to enjoy it, although it’s a shame to hear some people feel the need to destroy other people’s hard work,” Aimee says. Claramay Bristowe (5) got to meet a snowman at the Blenheim Train Station on Sunday. Photo provided.

Jazz cocktail bar for Hotel D’Urville By Celeste Alexander Blenheim’s well known Hotel D’Urville is in new hands and is set to receive renovations and some exciting additions in weeks to come. Nelson business owner Wayne Clark had been looking for a site in Blenheim to open a jazz and cocktail bar when he came across the listing for the former 1920s Public Trust Building on Queen Street. Wayne purchased the business lease from former owner Kevin Bourke with the option to also purchase the building. “It’s quite exciting actually because I used to come here 25 years ago and dine,” Wayne says. For the past two years, Wayne has owned and operated his Nelson businesses Bamboo Tiger Jazz and Cocktail Bar, and behind it, the Tiki Hut island themed outdoor bar. “These businesses have been extremely successful in Nelson so it was my plan to bring them to Blenheim,” he says. Wayne has several plans for the building. He will be operating his jazz and cocktail bar in the front bar area, his Tiki Hut will

be in the outside bar area at the back and the restaurant itself will be subleased. Upstairs the accommodation will remain the same but will receive new carpet and window furnishings. “Overall the building will be renovated while still retaining its character and charm. “One other plan we have for later down the track will be to put in a rooftop bar,” Wayne says. He is supported by his operations manager Grady Elliot who oversees Wayne’s business operations in Blenheim and Nelson. “Wayne is the concept and ideas man and I take care of the operations… it works quite well,” Grady says. The two have been working together for 12 years and are both excited to see their plans complete. “It’s a beautiful building that’s just looking a bit tired,” Grady says. “But with some TLC we hope to breathe new life into it.” The Hotel will be closed for the next four weeks for renovations before re-opening mid September, Wayne confirms.

Police weigh in on cellphone use while driving The Sun has received plenty of feedback from last Friday’s ‘Law Breakers’ front page, highlighting the problem of cellphone use while driving. Community constable Russ Smith was approached for comment on this issue and he has also provided some advice for motorists. While Russ does not comment on local statistics, he does say the region “has its share of drivers who choose to flaunt the law and drive while using a cellphone. “National media has recently highlighted the issue of cellphone use while driving and it is recognised nationally that a significant number of people use hand-held devices while driving.

“Police in Marlborough have regularly targeted drivers who choose to use cell phones while driving, but it is clear that many still choose to use hand-held devices while driving. “Police would by far prefer that drivers make their own good decisions around their choices while driving, than have to enforce this through issuing infringement offence notices. It is a fact that driving a motor vehicle safely requires concentration, attention and often the need for split-second decision-making. “Distraction is a major contributor to crashes throughout the country and drivers who choose to use a cell

phone while driving are unwittingly taking a significant percentage of their concentration away from the primary task of driving. This obviously leads to a much higher risk of crashes through driver distraction. “A good habit to get into is to turn your cellphone to ‘silent’ when you are preparing to drive, and/or put the phone out of reach or sight. Check it when you’ve arrived at your destination. “The world is unlikely to end because you miss a call, message or notification,” Russ says. Would you like to share your thoughts on this topic? Iona ‘excited to sing’

inbrief

By Celeste Alexander When Iona Panoho first planned her Stars in Your Eyes audition, she was intending to sing as English award winning artist Adele. However, three other people were already auditioning as Adele so Iona was tasked by the judges to choose another, so thinking on her feet she sang as Aretha Franklin. “The whole audition ended up being very last minute,” she laughs. “I knew one of Aretha’s songs well so I just went with it. It was so nerve-wracking as Aretha is insanely good, so I was excited to get the call back,” Iona says. The late multiple Grammy winner and ‘Queen of Soul’ Aretha Franklin is known for such hits as Respect, Freeway of Love and I Say a Little Prayer. “She’s pretty amazing! She’s an incredible artist and I’m really excited to be transforming into her,” Iona says. The Stars in Your Eyes show is taking place on Saturday, August 17 at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim. The event is a joint fundraising initiative for two local charities, Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation Marlborough. For Iona it will be another opportunity to grace the stage. The 17-year-old has been performing

since a young age. She plays the clarinet, piano and guitar and is part of the Marlborough Civic Orchestra. In preparation for the show, Iona has been watching live performances of Aretha to see how she moves about on stage, and takes note of the intricacy of her singing style. “The Blenheim Musical Theatre has been helping with a costume which has been heaps of fun, and it’s safe to say that I will look quite different on the night,” she laughs. Iona is being supported by her family in more ways than one. In fact her two sisters Charlotte and Peata will be providing back-up vocals during her performance. As for her chosen charity which will benefit from any prize money, Iona has nominated the Upbeat Development Orchestra and Theory Club. “It’s run by the Marlborough Civic Orchestra and provides a platform for young and returning musicians to learn to play their instruments. The theory club is for ages seven - 13 years who can learn music theory. “I volunteer there on a Friday afternoon and we have around 30 kids which we help with music book work as well as playing musical games,” she says.

Tickets for the Stars in Your Eyes show are close to being sold out so to get yours at the ASB Theatre’s booking office, or at www.ticketek.co.nz at the cost of $73 including fees. The three judges for the evening will be Tina Cross, the celebrity host who will also perform an entertainment slot during the show. Tina will be joined by Marlborough’s mayor, John Leggett and local

theatre director and singing real estate agent, Bridget McNamara. For the audience, from 6.30pm - 7.30pm there will be a pre-show cabaret in the foyer and Whitehaven Wine Room with complimentary Whitehaven wine and canapés by Karaka Cuisine. Guests are asked to arrive from 6.15pm to enjoy the food, wine and live entertainment, and to listen to the sounds of a pianist on the theatre’s grand piano plus the bluesy tones of a jazz trio ensemble.

Iona Panoho will be transforming into Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, for the up and coming Stars in Your Eyes show.

Students take the stage at kapa haka competition By Aimee O’Hagan Last Friday saw students from Blenheim, Picton, Nelson, and even Motueka performing on the stage of Marlborough Girls’ College’s school hall. They were there for the Top of the South Secondary Regional Kapa Haka Competition – a contest which

gives students a valuable chance to share their Maori culture and learning with the local community. According to MGC Te Reo Maori teacher, Louisa King, the contest is a rebranded competition – it hasn’t been held since 2012. “The 2012 earthquake happened during that com-

petition, so it was abandoned and the trophies weren’t awarded,” she says. “The purpose of it coming back here was to finish that and to give out the taonga.” Schools that took part in this year’s contest included Marlborough Girls’ and Boys’ Colleges, Queen Charlotte College, Nelson

College, Nayland College, Waimea College, and more. Louisa says the competition is a strictly regional contest; it will continue to act as a “non-qualifier” until “schools get up-and-running again”. “The purpose of the competition is to teach the youth of Te Tauihu the local songs,”

Louisa explains. “There’s two compulsory items that the schools have to perform: the waiata – traditional chant – and the haka.” In Louisa’s opinion, holding a competition like this really gives youth a “platform” to express their cultural identity. “Even if they’re not Maori, it’s about learning about

the indigenious people of Aotearoa. “There’s so many ripple effects that come from this simple competition. “It’s a great way to unite kids and give them a bit of confidence in who they are... To be proud of their school, be proud of their region, and be proud of themselves.”

A sweet effort for SPCA By Celeste Alexander A very cute and delicious cupcake production line was set up on Sunday afternoon as two Rapaura School students prepared for their SPCA Cupcake Day stall. Violet Keown (6) and Grace Price (5) were behind the fundraiser with the support of their parents Hayley Keown and Hannah Price. Hayley and Hannah baked 100 cupcakes on Sunday and the girls got together

to decorate them in animal theme. There were sheep, rabbits, ladybirds, fish and even worms coming out of grass – all created out of lollies and sprinkles. Violet and Grace also organised for their classmates from the Coleman Room at Rapaura School to dress in animal theme and bring along a donation for the cause. They held their cupcake stall at morning tea at school Monday morning and raised $141.60.

Promoting alcohol Dear Ed, A fundraising event supporting Renwick School glorifies and promotes alcohol (glass of wine on arrival). This clearly shows the lack of

knowledge of the effect of alcohol on our community. I wonder what the teachers, teacher-aides and all the professionals who are dealing with the effect of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder

(FASD) on a daily basis, think of this event. Renwick school pupils deserve better. It must be challenging to say the least to deal with one of these special

solar power for the car or to ease the loads on their systems with rapid charging absorbing up to 400 amps for some vehicles. Most houses are not built to take the loads and deliver the power to a garage. Think of all that older housing around Wellington suburbs – death traps for sure. If you are wealthy you can build a home with bespoke wiring to the garage or install a solar car port to recharge your electric car from the Tesla power wall that has been accumulating the charge from your solar panels. Dima is right about one thing, and that is refilling an electric car is like visiting a gas station with a very long sit down.

In case anyone thinks I am anti progress I already own 90 solar panels and am looking forward to see if hydrogen offers a more viable future for certain applications. There is downside to everything. EV’s can be theoretically around 98 percent efficient in terms of delivering energy to the vehicle. A hydrogen economy loses around 30 percent in getting the gas into a high pressure form. But it is quick easy and very energy dense. It is too soon to tell, but there are large scale experimental plants that turn CO2 from the atmosphere into liquid fuel compatible with our current fleet. Dear Ed I have to thank Dima Ivanov from FlipTheFleet. org for weighing in on the subject. His vision of recharging a tiny Nisan Leaf clearly demonstrates the dystopian future of living under the tyranny of electric cars. Your home becomes your prison with an electric vehicle chained to the wall for the duration of the night: no grocery shopping in the evening, no PTA meetings, no social life. An eight amp charge rate is around two thousand watts or a two bar heater, a sixteen amp charge rate is similar to running a full size domestic oven. These charge rates are all most

renters and owners of “cookie cutter homes” or spec housing can look forward to. Dima Ivanov’s contacts at Vectra can’t be very good. Vectra USED to own a division that dealt in Tesla batteries. It was Vectra’s own project to load shift with Teslas batteries that I was referring to. They spent in excess of $20m to do so. They employed over 20 engineers and completed some great projects in Australia New Zealand and the Pacific. They announced they were phasing out this division. Load shifting: Tesla car owners often install extra Tesla power walls in their home to either store

Letters to the editor continued Mobile phones and driving Dear Ed, Further to your article in last Friday’s Sun re illegal mobile phone usage while driving. I think the question needs to be asked: Why weren’t/aren’t the traffic police out monitoring this activity too? I think you would find that as dangerous as it is, they prefer to be patrolling the highways for those who

do those few extra km over the limit, than waiting at intersections or fast food outlets. And when I have taken this up with the Minister of Police, the argument given is that he is unable to offer directive to the police in their daily activities. Really! It is well documented that inattention causes 90 per cent of all vehicular traf-

fic accidents, and that using a mobile phone is particularly dangerous, yet the fine is a modest one sixth for that of littering - $80 versus $500, and just marginally less than the non usage of a seat belt, which while not maybe causing an accident might save a life. The problem is that NZ was very late in banning the use of mobile phones while driving, not till 2011,

and by 2013, smart phone were very prevalent, which is when the fatality rate started to climb and has been going up by over 10 per cent annually. Clearly, the fine needs to be increased several times and maybe the phone impounded, as it is with the misuse of a vehicle. And likewise for non seat belt usage, which adds a third to the current

fatality rate. But all this is meaningless unless it is enforced. Far easier, it seems to the government, to just get everybody to slow down - which in itself leads to more accidents through increased inattentiveness. A very concerned motorist Waikawa

Cellphone use shocking CEO of the Insurance Council of NZ, asking what is being done to improve driver behaviour. No one has given me a meaningful answer. I have suggested introducing compulsory third party insurance (CTPI) in a similar way to UK, US, Europe, and Australia. All these countries have CTPI and all have better law compliance and safety than NZ.

Why are they safer? Because drivers in those countries have to report demerit points to their insurance company, who will very likely increase their third party premium. The people the Sun caught would not want demerit points to cost them money in increased premiums, so they would obey the law. It’s that simple. Even without CTPI, insurance companies can improve safety

by increasing third party premiums for unsafe drivers. The NZ government and the AA say the fault is with our roads not with our drivers. The NZ insurance industry says nothing. All are failing us. The only support I have had is from the NZ road traffic police. I commend the Sun for its brave action. Evan Robinson Blenheim

As it appears that screens are the problem they must be taken out of the hands of these lunatics that continue to text-talk while driving. The banning and buy back of them must be the Government’s priority and must start immediately. People who have these devices must be compensated at the purchase price when surrendering them. The police could handle the

buy back, as they are the service that sees the results scattered all over the road. Yes, the homeless people will have to wait a little longer but there is plenty of government money out for such projects and the whole country will be far safer. I expect a buy back scheme to be launched before the end of the year. Safety First Blenheim

Trees have leaves, and are not bare as they are in the snowy other side of the world. Can you imagine what those happy, inebriated late night pre-Christmas people will undoubtedly use the colourful woollen decorations for?

It’s a crazy idea. How much better would it be to knit the wool into warm articles for those poor people overseas who need warmth at Christmas. As for the idea of knitting blankets from the wool for animals after Christmas – would this really happen? Who want to know with dirty wool? Who wants a woollen CBD? Summer Santa Blenheim

Drivers and cellphones Dear Ed, Using cellphones while driving causing death or injury in car crashes is well known I believe there are places where accidents caused by cellphone distraction now outweigh even drink driving related incidents. The problem, as your article has shown, is getting worse and yet our Government has done nothing about it. NZ statistics are readily available on line for anyone who wants

to research them. If our Prime minister was really concerned about the health and safety of the people of New Zealand, as she makes out she is, she would immediately takes steps to instigate an immediate buy back and the banning of all cell phones with a screen. Dear Ed, Your report about cellphone use while driving should be shocking. But it is not. It is just another example of the complacency regarding driving attitude and behaviour that permeates NZ society from the top. I have written to Associate Minister of Transport, Julie Ann Genter, head of the AA, Mike Noone, and Tim Grafton,

Neighbours helping neighbours Do you know the people in your neighbourhood? Could you all work together to cope with an emergency? Karen McKenzie, Marlborough’s new Neighbourhood Support coordinator, tells Bill McElhinney she is keen to help groups get established. Karen MacKenzie has seen how well a neighbourhood copes in an emergency. “I lived in Christchurch through both the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes, and the more recent Kaikoura earthquakes,” Karen says. “I have seen the differences between being in a well-connected area during an emergency and one where no-one really knows each other. “We lived in Halswell when the Christchurch earthquakes struck. The tiles were falling off the roof where I worked, and it was pretty scary. “But in our neighbourhood people didn’t really know each other, they weren’t very connected, so there wasn’t a great level of support.

“If something big happens, these are the people you will be relying on.” “But we had moved to Marlborough when the Seddon and Kaikoura earthquakes struck and the people were more connected. “Neighbours knew each other and checked on each other, they were more organised.” Karen has recently taken on the role of coordinating the Neighbourhood Support network in Marlborough. She takes over from former Marlborough Neighbourhood Support Coordinator, Sharaine Steenburg. “She’s done an amazing job for the past three years and we will miss her!” Karen says. “I’ve been in the job for a couple of months now, and am enjoying getting to know everyone. “I took this role as I am especially interested in using neighbourhood support to help us be prepared as a neighbourhood in an emergency. “I am very lucky to be a part of a

well-connected street, so know and appreciate the value of having support from my neighbours.” Karen Brohm grew up in Blenheim and went to Canterbury University to study management science and biology, then ended up working in Christchurch for Statistics New Zealand. Karen and her husband and their two children moved to Blenheim in 2013 and she eventually took up her new role after being contacted by Police and Civil Defence. “We have about 70 streets involved in Neighbourhood Watch,” Karen says. “There are a few I haven’t seen in a while so I plan to get out and visit them soon.” As well as visiting current groups, Karen is keen to see new groups set up. “Research shows that there is less crime in the areas where there are Neighbourhood Watch signs. “Neighbourhood Watch promotes active connections, which means people will watch out for each other and do things like check up on elderly neighbours if they haven’t seen them for a while. “And if something big happens, these are the people you will be relying on. You can tap into the many individual skills that people around you have. “You can’t rely on the emergency services to be immediately available as they will probably be stretched, so the people in your area will be your first support.” Karen is also keen to get young people involved in Neighbourhood Support. “If you have children who know what to do in an emergency, that really helps. Do your kids know how call 111 on a cell phone if there’s an emergency?” There is plenty of assistance for those wanting to set up a neighbourhood group, Karen says. “As well as providing signs, we can help you chose a street coordinator,

help with organising newsletters. “If you want to organise a get-together with a street barbecue, we can come and supply food. “We also have people from the Police and Fire Service who will come and give advice and supply start-up packs. “Get in touch if there is anything we can do to support your neighbourhood group—it doesn’t have to be related to an event! “We can help out with something as simple setting up a group email to make it easier to stay in touch with the people in your street. “We have stickers and street

signs if yours are broken or faded or you’d like an extra few in your street. “If you’d like to set up a street support system in case of an emergency or natural event, we can help you with that too,” Karen says. “Neighbourhood support can also be about people sharing surplus produce or passing on items they no longer need or use. It’s not just about emergencies.” Neighbourhood Support is a notfor-profit, community based crime programme, aiming to make neighbourhoods and communities

safer and more caring place to live. Neighbourhood Support initially started life as Neighbourhood Watch, introduced by New Zealand Police in the late 70’s as a crime prevention initiative. In the 1990’s Neighbourhood Support became a stand-alone organisation working alongside the Police. Karen is keen to hear from Neighbourhood Support groups and anyone wanting to establish one. Just email neighbourhood.support@marlborough.govt.nz or call 027 300 9958.

Top Kiwi group to feature in Foreshore celebrations By Bill McElhinney Celebrating Marlborough’s cultural diversity will be part of the Tuia 250 celebrations on the Picton Foreshore in November. Totaranui 250 Trust general manager, Chrissy Powlesland, says supergroup Fly My Pretties will be the headline act for the celebrations, but other cultural groups will be invited to perform from about 12pm to 6.30pm on November 23 before Fly My Pretties take the stage for about 90 minutes. This year New Zealand marks 250 years since the first meetings between Maori and Pakeha during James Cook and the Endeavour’s 1769 voyage to Aotearoa New Zealand. Tuia 250 will acknowledge this pivotal moment in our nation’s history as well as the extraordinary feats of Pacific voyagers who reached and settled in Aotearoa many years earlier. A dual heritage flotilla of waka hourua and tall ships will spend five days in Totaranui and Picton from November 21 to November 25. Chrissy says inviting Fly My Pretties to be part of our local commemorations was a deliberate decision. “It’s precisely because of the band’s cultural diversity and willingness to speak out on national issues that we wanted them to perform. “We want to hold an event that encourages debate about the past, shines a light on the tangata whenua stories of our dual history, and provides an opportunity for real conversations about that journey,” Chrissy says. Fly My Pretties is an ever changing collective, offering a collab-

orative musical and visual show featuring fresh and established contemporary musicians and artists. The Picton lineup will include Barnaby Weir, Anna Coddington, A Girl Named Mo, Hollie Smith, Lauren Barus (LA Mitchell), Mel Parsons, Ria Hall, Aaron Stewart, Age Pryor, Iraia Whakamoe, James Coyle, Jarney Murphy, Laughton Kora, Nigel Patterson and Ryan Prebble Cast member Ria Hall says: “Fly My Pretties has always been about celebrating diversity through music, so it’s fitting to be performing at an event which commemorates our unique tales of arrival. “It’s also timely to address, acknowledge and learn our own history, to put our nation in good stead in the present through a lens of understanding. The good, the bad and the ugly.” The Tuia 250 events kick off on Thursday, November 21, with a Powhiri led by tangata whenua at Meretoto/Ship Cove. The commemorative vessels including the HMB Endeavour replica from Australian Maritime Museum in Sydney and the a’afaite i te Ao Ma’ohi, a va’a moana from Pape’ete, Tahiti, will then sail through Totaranui to arrive in Waitohi/Picton on Friday, November 22. Throughout the weekend the vessels will be open to the public to hop onboard and have a look around. Saturday November 23 will see a huge stage used throughout the day to showcase cultural performances from members of our community. Early evening contemporary musicians will perform as support for Fly My Pretties.

July temperatures show the world is getting warmer By Bill McElhinney New Zealand has just had the second-warmest July on record, according to NIWA. And July was the warmest month the world has experienced since record-keeping began more than a century ago. In Marlborough, July mean air temperatures were the warmest on record, Marlborough Research Centre scientists, Rob Agnew, says. It was also wet, with well above average rain, well below average sunshine and below average number of frosts There were 13 wet days during July with the highest 24 hour total of 23.4 mm on July 15. The wettest period during the month was from Thursday 18th through until Wednesday 24th. Over those seven days 61.8 mm rain was recorded, with only one day of no rain. The mean temperature of 9.7°C was 1.8°C above the long-term average for July of 7.9°C. July 2019 has equalled the previous warmest

July (1932-2019) temperature recorded in 2005, Rob says. This is now the second warmest January to July period for the 88 years from 1932 to 2019. “When we look at the five warmest January to July periods on record in the last 88 years, three of the warmest years have occurred since 2016,” Rob says. Provisional sunshine results indicate Napier was the sunniest town in July, with 162.6 hours sunshine, well ahead of Richmond with 152 hours and Blenheim with 137.2 hours. For the seven months from January to July Richmond is currently in first place, 31.7 hours ahead of Blenheim in second place. Provisional sunshine totals to the end of July: Richmond, 1597.6 hours; Blenheim, 1565.9 hours (31.7 hours behind Richmond); Appleby, 1552.1 hours; New Plymouth, 1528.4 hours (missing 2 days); Whakatane, 1527.1 hours (missing 2 days in July); Napier, 1510.7 hours.

Renovated 1960 home scoops supreme award Six Marlborough homes have come out on top in the Marlborough/Nelson/West Coast Registered Master Builders 2019 awards announced at the weekend. Blenheim company Hunt Construction has won the Marlborough/Nelson/West Coast Registered Master Builders 2019 Supreme Renovation of the Year award for the category up to $500,000 which saw the revival of a 1960s home wow judges. The judges commented; “This home is a worthy winner, built by master craftsmen. “Originally built in the 1960’s, this house has had many alterations and additions over time. “This latest renovation involved reworking the interior and exterior spaces. This ultimately provided a modernised home, all while retaining a familiar charm from the past. “This was a challenging renovation for the team.

Extensive structural concrete and steelwork was required, and the owners lived in the home throughout the entire 12 – month construction period. “Despite these challenges, the owners were richly rewarded by seeing their ideas come to life throughout the build. “Neil Hunt’s team has provided outstanding solutions that have enabled this beautifully crafted home to be brought up to date.” The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on Saturday 3 August at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Overall there were 21 Gold Award winners from the Marlborough, Nelson and West Coast regions, which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Top 100 Gold Award finalists.
