Gaga for Lieke By Celeste Alexander “It was an unforgettable experience!” Lieke Tegels has won the 2019 Stars in Your Eyes show, held Saturday night at the ASB Theatre, with her singing and dance performance as Lady Gaga. A hospitality co-ordinator for Cloudy Bay, Lieke took the stage by storm with her rendition of ‘Bad Romance’. Her

expressive body movement and unique costume wowed the judges and even had the audience engaged with the actions. The second place winner was Chris Valli with his colourful and memorable impersonation of Boy George and in third, Iona Panoho with her powerhouse vocal performance as Aretha Franklin. Continued on page 2.

TWICE WEEKLY

Continued from page 1. Saturday’s Stars in Your Eyes was a huge success with a near sell-out show. Ticket holders first turned up to enjoy the pre-show cabaret and wine and canapes by Karaka Cuisine. They then took their seats to enjoy the performances of each of the nine performers, who were first introduced by video, before stepping out in full costume. Celebrity performer Tina Cross was an enthusiastic host for the evening as well as guest judge alongside Mayor John Leggett and local theatre director Bridget McNamara. The audience was treated to a spectacle of glitz, glamour, energetic choreography, colourful backup dancers, soulful piano playing and most importantly – the stars themselves! Each contestant sung and danced their hearts out, some added humour to their performance while others had the task of singing and dancing at the same time. For first place winner, Lieke Tegels, there were many nerves as she stepped up behind the screen, but it wasn’t noticeable as

she took charge of the stage with her Lady Gaga ‘monster’ moves. Her costume - sparkly cropped shorts and a gold coloured box for a hat - added to the authenticity of her performance. “The hat was actually a napkin box from work,” she laughs. “I had a lot of fun with my costume… with the combination of pieces with makeup and hair, it was a real piece of art,” she says. As her name was announced as the winner, Lieke says she “couldn’t believe it!” “Winning was not the main point of entering the show. I joined for fun and to experience the whole journey, which was just so amazing. “When hearing my name I felt my body kind of cramp up and I couldn’t speak,” she laughs. “I was so surprised but very happy for my chosen charity,” she says. “The whole experience, from auditioning through to the night, was unforgettable. Everything was prepared so well by organisers Liz McKay and Robyn Simmons. “I’d also like to thank my back up dancers as I couldn’t have done this without them, as well

Ed’s bunny pie plan a winner By Bill McElhinney Hop to it, home cooks – here’s the winning recipe in the Burleigh Design a Pie competition, and it features rabbit! Keen home cook and retired electrical engineer Edward Barron, who lives in Havelock, came up with the winning recipe, which he calls Wai-hop-ai Rabbit with Prunes. “I do most of the cooking at home because I’m retired now, and my wife, Annette, teaches at Renwick School,” Edward says. “A mate gave me the rabbit a while ago and I thought: ‘I can do something tasty with this. I can make a ragout and use it for a pie filling.’ “There are plenty of rabbits in the Waihopai Valley; they’re a great eco-sourced resource.

“I started by dusting the jointed rabbit pieces in flour seasoned with Grassmere salt and pepper, then browning them in local olive oil. “I removed the rabbit and sweated finely chopped local garlic, shallots and carrots. Well rabbits love carrots! “I then de-glazed the pan with some Marlborough pinot noir, added some stock then returned the rabbit along with chopped fresh thyme and quartered prunes. “I braised this on low for an hour, the de-boned the rabbit, reduced and thickened the sauce, let it cool and it was ready for a pie.” Edward will be eating well in the coming weeks after winning prizes from the pie recipe sponsors, Westmeat, Fresh Direct and

Sweet Creations. He also gets a crate of the famous Burleigh pies and will join the judging panel for the Great Burleigh Pie Pairing Challenge next month, which hunts down the best Burleigh pie and Marlborough wine match. Edward enjoys Marlborough wine, particularly sauvignon blanc and chardonnay, so is excited about joining the judging panel. “We had a great response to the recipe competition,” organiser Fiona Fenwick says. “In the end we had over 65 entries! Some sent in very detailed recipes, some were from children and parents and some even sent in the actual pies! “We did have a few weird ones, but overall the entrants showed

they were very ‘pinotative.’ “We will probably do it again next year, and may include a junior section.” In the meantime Fiona and friends are gathering the entries for the pie and wine match. “We’ve had a great response from local wineries so far,” Fiona says. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s great to see so many getting into the spirit of it. “There’s still two weeks to get your entries in and we’re aiming to have every winery in Marlborough entered.” The entry fees for the competition will also benefit local groups Marlborough Women’s Refuge, Marlborough Riding for Disabled and the Marlborough Migrants Centre.

Primary and intermediate school principals have accepted the Government’s latest pay offer, which gives NZEI members pay parity with their secondary principals of similarsized schools. The government put forward the new contract details last week, prompting principals to call off threats of further strike action. Area school principals are still in negotiations with the Government over their collective agreement.

New fence at Park New bamboo fencing has been installed to enhance the Japanese garden at Harling Park. Harling Park is Japanese-themed to represent Blenheim’s sister city relationship with the cities of Tendo and Otari in Japan. Council’s Reserves and Amenities Manager Jane Tito says the Japanese contribution to the park, including the recently added bamboo fence, has been designed in consultation with Tendo City Council staff.

Endurance cyclist’s effort honoured By Bill McElhinney The skin on his hands and feet has started to heal, the damaged nerves are mending, but the memory of riding in the rain is still fresh. “I’m not doing that again,” endurance cyclist Craig Harper told a mayoral reception in the Marlborough District Council chambers on Friday. The Blenheim builder was honoured for completing the 5000-kilometre Race Across America on June 22, one of only three New Zealanders to complete the event in its 36 year history. Craig spent a tortuous 10 days and 15 hours cycling through heat, rain, snow and wind, averaging 22.5 hours a day on the bike with only occasional short sleeps. To get a head start, he completed his first 40 hours of the race with no sleep at all. He finished fourth overall, and third in his under 50 age group. The support of the Marlborough community had been critical in his journey, and he would be forever grateful, Craig told the gathering. “I can’t thank enough the support from family, friends, and Marlborough businesses. “Without their genuine support and willingness to get behind me, I would not have had this opportunity.” Mayor John Leggett congratulated Craig and thanked him for “putting Blenheim in the national and international spotlight. “There was a big media focus around your event, Craig, and it was a win for Marlborough every

time,” John said. Craig also praised his support crew of nine, who also faced hardship and sleep deprivation during the event: crew chief Jim Rees; team manager Callum Anderson; driver/navigator Norm Wilson; massage therapist and wife Kate Harper; driver/navigator Jamie Fitzgerald; bike mechanic Ray Dunstan; driver/navigator Mel Johnson; team doctor Emily Marfell; media and communications manager Jason Henry. “They were vital to my success,” Craig says. “Along with coping with 60 pages of race rules, every day they had to find 40 litres of clean water and 10 bags of ice to make the slushies for my liquid diet. “I had to hand all decision making to them while I just focused on keeping going. “I lost it at times and had scary moments of real confusion where I thought I had been on the same bit of road before, but they were always there to do what was needed.” It was as much a mental challenge is a physical one, Craig says. “But there were only two choices for me: to quit the race, or keep going. “And quitting was never an option, so I just had to keep going. “At times I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. But the crew made a series of little profile cards with messages of encouragement which they gave me at each stop.” Why did he undertake such a gruelling challenge? “I enjoy the challenge,” Craig says, “and I wanted to test myself.

Craig Harper at the mayoral reception on Friday with wife Kate and daughters Brooke (11) and Hannah (9).

I find that when you do test yourself you feel more alive and you live life with a purpose. “It was tough, but I have no regrets. I would say to others,

make the most of life’s journeys. Go out and give it a go!” In the coming months Craig will be taking the opportunity to pass on the mental skills he

has learned to youngsters in the Marlborough community. He has already been asked to speak at Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges.

Plenty of choice for local body elections By Bill McElhinney A rush of candidates in the last few days before nominations closed means the October local body elections will be hotly contested. Two candidates are challenging Mayor John Leggett’s position and 10 others have put their names forward, so 31 council hopefuls will battle it out for 14

positions, including mayor. A surprise nomination was current Wairau-Awatere ward councillor Cynthia Brooks, who announced in June she would be quitting local politics. However, after being inundated with people asking her to reconsider, Cynthia has put her name forward again. The candidates for the Marlbor-

QCC wins Police training cup for third year running Story and photos by Celeste Alexander Students from all three Marlborough colleges were given a taste of what it would be like to go through Police competency training recently, as well as given the opportunity to win the ‘PCT Challenge Cup’. The Inter-College Police Competency Training (PCT) event finals were held last Friday at Marlborough Girls’ College where students from Marlborough Girls’, Boys’ and Queen Charlotte Colleges challenged themselves on the course. Students had to push a trailer a certain distance, then carry a full

container to a designated point, before running through a course, jumping through a window shaped hole, going up and over two obstacles then finishing with a sprint to the finish. Each of the colleges put in a good effort but it was Queen Charlotte College which won the trophy for the third year in a row with their best time of 1minute 45seconds. There was only seconds between each of the teams however, with MGC coming in second place with 1minute 46seconds, and MBC at third with 1minute 47seconds. The fastest time among the girls

went to MGC’s Eleri James-Sitters, and the fastest time among the boys went to QCC’s William Dunkley. Cape Campbell access Dear Ed, In response to a write-up on Cape Campbell access, dated 6.8.19. I totally agree with Tony Ashworth, no areas, especially coastal, should be closed off to the public. It is public domain, with conditions of speed, etc, etc . The East Coast Protection Group have made a great effort in fencing off bird nesting areas. If they wish to fence off seal areas and put white centre lines

along the beach, so be it. As far as having stationary vehicles within 20 meters of seals, I do not see that on SH1 when travelling south and seals are at the road edge. The coastal area farmers should think themselves lucky. Theoretically they have gained land. It would be a bit different if the coast was lowered instead of being raised. The Queens Chain is approx. 20 meters above the mean high

water line. If farmers wish to fence above that line, do it. Impossible, I know, in most places. Another point of interest: re. access to the Cape Lighthouse, maybe the Peters should open the road to the public, which taxpayer paid for many decades ago. My suggestion is: farmers, get over it, and get on with it. Phil Russ Ward

At the Grigg Drive to Rotary Lookout track entrance: MDC reserves and amenities officer, Robin Dunn; Walking Access Commission Regional Field Adviser, Penny Wardle; Mayor John Leggett; district councillor, Gerald Hope.

New track to access Withers By Bill McElhinney The hundreds of people that use the Wither Hills Farm Park every day now have a new track to access the popular walkways. The Grigg Drive to Rotary Lookout track was officially opened last Wednesday, and provides people with direct access from the Boulevard on Taylor subdivision to the Farm Park and its network of walking and biking tracks. Over 300,000 people accessed the Farm Park last year, council reserves and amenities officer, Robin Dunn, says. The council started counting users in 1993 using counters at various access points, and 30,000

users were recorded that year. “It’s grown every year since then,” Robin says, “with hundreds of people accessing the 18km of walking and biking tracks every day.” The council has also monitored the popular Taylor River walkway and recorded around 750 people on just one side of the walkway on a daily basis, with the numbers increasing over the weekends. “The Wither Hills tracks are a real asset to our community with thousands of walkers and cyclists making the most of them every year,” Marlborough Mayor, John Leggett, says. “It’s great to see new tracks

like this one being added to the Farm Park. “They’re also a draw card to those visiting our region with the Farm Park well known as a sporting and leisure feature in Marlborough.” The Marlborough District Council invested $45,000 into the project and a grant from the Walking Access Commission helped see the project through to its completion. The Walking Access Commission granted the Bike Walk Marlborough Trust $4000 from its Enhanced Access Fund towards designing and constructing gates and signposts for the new track. The Commission is glad to have

contributed, Walking Access Commission Regional Field Adviser, Penny Wardle, says. “Council staff and the Bike Walk Marlborough Trust worked extremely hard to complete the new route to the popular Rotary lookout and now we all get to enjoy it,” she says. “We’re pleased to be able to help people enjoy walks on their own back door.” Each year the Commission grants up to $100,000 to support new tracks and trails around the country through its Enhanced Access Fund. The money goes towards helping secure access to the outdoors for future generations.

Life Flight to the rescue When local woman Amanda Beattie went into premature labour with her first child, Ben, it was Life Flight Trust’s air ambulance that came to the family’s rescue. Six years later, the family is wanting to express their gratitude to help promote an up and coming fundraising event, as reporter Celeste Alexander finds out.

Life Flight's air ambulance.

Prematurely born, Ben Beattie is pictured in an incubator ready to be flown to Wellington by the Life Flight air ambulance.

Amanda and Brad Beattie with their sons Ben (6) and Beauden (2). Photo provided.

Amanda had gone into labour 10 weeks early and after several failed attempts to stop the labour, Wairau Hospital staff realised Ben was going to be born no matter what. From that point, the decision was made to request the Life Flight plane. Amanda says when the Life Flight crew walked into the small room where Ben was being treated, there was a “silent but very noticeable sign of relief on everyone’s faces”. “It was around 4am when the Life Flight crew and specialist NICU staff arrived. They were so supportive and warm even though they had been dragged out of bed! “My wee 1.6kg newborn was ever so carefully loaded into an incubator and he and his dad were wheeled off, airport-bound, for his flight to Wellington,” she says. Unfortunately, Amanda couldn’t

go on the flight due to hospital policy, making it the hardest part of this journey. Ben and his father Brad landed safely in Wellington at 6am then were transported by Life Flight ambulance to Wellington Hospital’s NICU. After three weeks there in NICU, Amanda and Brad received the news that Nelson Hospital had a spot for them, and Ben was cleared to leave. “Again he was carefully loaded into the transport incubator and he and I boarded the ‘bandage’ plane again. “It was a beautiful flight and we received the same smiling reassuring faces of the Life Flight team,” Amanda says. Ben is now a happy and healthy six-year-old boy who loves trucks, animals and rugby. Amanda and Brad have since

welcomed their second son, Beauden (2). Amanda came within just minutes of needing the services of Life Flight again after she went into labour at 25 weeks with Beauden. “The Life Flight helicopter had just been called out so instead we were taken to Wellington by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter,” she says. Amanda was put on bed rest at Wellington Hospital for a number of weeks before being able to return to Blenheim to give birth. There are hundreds more stories of Marlborough people who have Life Flight to thank. Because of the Life Flight Trust’s amazing work, a very special fundraising evening has been planned for next month. Brought to you by Mitre 10 MEGA Marlborough, ‘Uplift Marlborough’ will be held on September 20 from 6-10.30pm at

“It surprises everyone when they find out he was so premature. My family and I will never be able to thank Life Flight enough for their helping and nurturing hand in our time of great need.” Dubbed a ‘posh BBQ’, the event will be hosted by Life Flight’s great friend Mark Sainsbury.

Tickets cost $100 each and include delicious food created by celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal and cooked on new Everdure Barbeques, as well as local beverages and entertainment. Winter WINTER

Do heat pumps really save money? Heat pumps are efficient in cold weather. Using a heat pump can save you money compared to other forms of heating. A heat pump’s running costs depend on how long you use it and its energy output. According to energywise.govt.nz, a heat pump used six hours per day for six months of the year with an energy output of 6KwH will cost around $400 per year to run. So, if you use a heat pump instead of an equivalent electric heater in your living space, it can save you around $500 a year. But oil or fan heaters do have their places in your home, particularly for heat-

ing small spaces, such as a study, or a bedroom for short periods of time. Top tips to save money using your heat pump The best way to use a heat pump is to keep the setting low (18ºC or - 20ºC). Don’t set your heat pump to the maximum – it won’t heat the room any quicker, but it will use more energy. Programme it to turn on 15 minutes before you need it instead. • Clean both your indoor and outdoor heat pump filter regularly – at least once a year. It’s simple and quick to do this yourself unless the placement of the outside unit is difficult to get to. • Only heat the space you’re using. Don’t have heat pumps

going in bedrooms or in rooms you’re not using. • Turn off your heat pump when it’s not in use. It can run for as long as you need, but make sure you switch it off when you’re not using it. • Close doors and curtains to keep the heat in. • If you can, get your house insulated. The better insulated your home, the better it will hold the heat and the more energy efficient the heat pump will be. Heat pumps may be an efficient way to use electricity to heat your home, but you do need to select the correct heat pump for your home. Contact your local friendly heatpump specialist to find out more.

‘Life together is the way it should be’ By Aimee O’Hagan August 14, 1954, was no ordinary Saturday. Music was playing, people were happy, and church bells were ringing: Donald Cameron Manning and Pauline Mary Brunsell were getting married. It’s now been an amazing 65 years since the Blenheim couple’s special day, and the pair are still as in love as ever. “When my brother and myself were at Hutt Valley High School [in Wellington], we were young and involved in the scout movement,” Donald says of the events that would eventually lead him to meet his wife-to-be.

Donald never hesitates to give Pauline a kiss on the cheek!

“The commissioner of the [Hutt Valley] scouting organisation – Jim Vogel – bought Mistletoe Bay... He invited us to go and help develop the place... Which we did. “We left school and went to live in the Marlborough Sounds.” According to Donald, Jim also owned a grocery shop in Picton. Donald and his brother would occasionally “come up from the Sounds” and do a “little bit of work there”. When working at the grocery store, Donald would go to the “old post office” nearby to post letters to their family back home. The first time he saw Pauline (whose father and grandfather were local boat-builders), she was biking past the post office. “She was riding an old Raleigh 20 bike, with the skirt guards on the front and the back, and I still recall that she had a tartan skirt on,” Donald says with a grin. He got to know Pauline by taking her to the “local league dances” o n Sa t u r d ay nights, which they attended alongside two of their good friends.

Last Wednesday, August 14, marked the 65th wedding anniversary of Donald and Pauline Manning. The couple's special day was spent celebrating with family and friends.

“Her father used to come and pick her up [after the dances]!” Donald laughs. “In the end, they must’ve liked the look of me or something, and they let me take her by myself.” About five years after they met, the two got married at St Paul’s Presybyterian Church in Picton. The 87 year-olds have since had

three children – Lorraine, Grant, and Colin – eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. When asked about what the secret is to a lasting marriage, Donald says that there really isn’t one. “It’s just about being yourself… Being able to communicate with each other and love one another. “It’s easy to do – as long as you

get the right person. “Pauline’s always been a great mother... She looked after the children well, so I was able to work as hard as I could.” “I’m pretty sure I picked the right lady,” he adds with a smile. Any final words from Donald to describe his life with Pauline? “It’s the way life should be!”

EDUCATION Thrive at Scots College Scots College provides a future focused education through an holistic programme that builds character, citizenship, knowledge and the necessary skills to learn for life. Students are provided a safe and nurturing environment where they can realise their potential across academics, cultural, sporting and service. Transferable skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, character and citizenship all play a significant role in the College’s curriculum design at all levels. The recently implemented Year 11 course concentrates on learning and further development of these key skills. In addition, Scots Senior School

(Years 11-13) changes to become co-educational next year, providing an excellent educational environment where students are able to build the foundations to best prepare them to take their place in the wider community of men and women.

Scots College has over 100 boarders living on-site in their modern boarding facilities, located close to Wellington Airport. Boarders are cared for through a team of dedicated staff and gain a number of important life skills through a well-supported learning environment.

Excellence focus for students Nelson College is a progressive and innovative boys’ state school. Our learning environment focusses on ‘inspiring young men to take their place in the world by fostering the values of manaakitanga through quality education’. We take great pride in nurturing each boy’s individual interests and potential across all areas of academia, sport, arts, culture and leadership. Set alongside the main college campus are Nelson College’s two boarding houses – Rutherford and Barnicoat. These impressive heritage buildings recently had major refurbishments, so we can continue to offer the very best in boarding for our local and International students. Our experienced staff are committed

to creating a strong and caring community within the boarding fraternity ensuring that our boys feel supported throughout their educational endeavours, as well as taking advantage of everything the Nelson region offers. “We’re incredibly proud of our boarders,” says Director of Boarding Samme Hippolite. “We know how formative these years are, and we want them to have every opportunity to develop their interests. We also want them to have fun, make lifelong friendships and create unforgettable memories within the context of a clear and safe structure.” Nelson College encourages and celebrates achievements by its students. In 2018, 44 students received Board of Trustee Medallions, awarded to

those who win a national or international competition, or who represent NZ in a national team. The fields include sport, environmental defence, enterprise, hospitality, and music. At this time of the year, our winter sport teams come to the fore, with both our 1st XI Football and 1st XV Rugby achieving major successes. In 2020 we will be defending the Quad Rugby Cup on our home ground, as well as celebrating the 150th anniversary of New Zealand’s very first game of rugby, played between Nelson College and Nelson Football Club. An education at Nelson College is set within a climate that fosters tolerance, compassion and excellence for every student.

EDUCATION Students seen as ‘individual learners’ It’s often said that ‘a busy boarder is a happy boarder’. At the heart of the beautiful Nelson and Tasman Bay region, Garin College’s hostels offer boarders a really great place to be busy! With wonderful beaches, safe rivers, world class walking and cycle tracks - even the chance to get to a ski-field, once in a while - the region offers a range of sporting, recreational and co-curricular opportunities which are second to none. Twin hostels, Mother Teresa and Francis Douglas House, are modern, vibrant, stimulating places offering students the chance to meet in a spirit of friendship and discovery As the region’s only co-educational Catholic secondary school, Garin College has a history and reputation of which it can be justifiably proud. Founded in 2002,

we have grown steadily as a school sustained by Gospel values, living out our motto of ‘Faith and Wisdom’. Of ten recog n ised for strengths in music and the arts, Garin’s students also have an enviable track record of sporting achievements, as well as excellent academic results curriculum-wide. In this context, we hold our own with the best, but it’s a sense of ‘special character’, of learning occurring within a faith community, which makes Garin and its students really stand out. Our teaching is never dogmatic. Instead, we see our students as individual learners, discovering their God given potential for generosity, aroha, rangimarie, integrity and new life - the Garin values. For more information, visit our website or contact our Hostel Manager directly.

So you have bought yourself some after-study treats, planned a fun reward for when you have finished studying, your room is well lit and ventilated and text books are laid out neatly in front of you? But you still can’t find the motivation to study? It’s more common than you think. So how can you make studying fun? Listen to good music Plug in your headphones and no-one needs to know that you’re listening to the Frozen soundtrack… This is a classic study tip for a reason – everything is more fun when it’s set to music you love. Some people

have the gift of being able to concentrate even while listening to songs with tricky and compelling lyrics; some can even write an essay while singing along. Before you just go for your favourite songs, it’s probably worth considering whether you are one of those people. For most people, music without lyrics is a better option. That doesn’t necessarily mean Mozart – film soundtracks are fun and motivational. Use nice stationery Are you a stationery person? You’ll know if you are. If a fancy new notebook is what it takes then go ahead and treat yourself.

If you have a desk full of lovely pens, pencils, note-paper, notebooks, stickers and goodness knows what else, now is the time to use, and delight in them. Cover your notes in stickers if it means you’re more likely to reread them. After all, if it’s not to be used when you have important studying to do, why bother hoarding lovely stationery in the first place? Study somewhere different Mix things up with a little al fresco studying. Studying often gets boring simply because you don’t get a change of scene, unless you count going from your room to the library and back.

EDUCATION Affordable excellence Nelson College for Girls offers high quality, affordable education for young women in a very supportive environment. Our Boarding Hostel, Clarice Johnstone House, is a very important part of this. It offers excellent accommodation for up to 150 students, from New Zealand and overseas. This accommodation provides quality for our young women but is priced competitively. For many of our boarders, there are significant opportunities for them to be involved in sporting and cultural activities that would not otherwise

be available to them. Our boarding students are part of a very large family, proactively supported by our senior students through a wide variety of student led activities. Nelson College for Girls has a strong house system and all of our boarders are members of the same house, Whangamoa. They are passionate participants in all house activities in the school and revel in the ‘purple’ house succeeding well. Our Year 9 – 12 students live in Clarice Johnstone House while our Year 13 students are in the Levels building.

This modern accommodation provides them with a more independent living experience, while still ensuring our most senior students play a pivotal role in creating the family atmosphere of the boarding community. Our boarders enjoy academic success, make lifelong friendships and enjoy strong connections within the school and its community. Food for thought Food makes everything better – yes, even the challenging act of studying! It’s important to know how to eat healthy when most of your brain’s energy is going into schoolwork, whether you are studying for an upcoming exam or desperately trying to finish an assignment. There’s more to the art of eating healthy than drinking a litre of water every day and eating regularly: it’s about knowing exactly what the best foods are to eat. Try eating: Eggs – Whether they’re poached, boiled, or even scrambled, eggs offer a range of nutrients to give you that extra push when studying. Amino acids, healthy fats, lots of protein, and vitamins and minerals are only a few. Eggs also contain choline, which is an important micronutrient that your body utilises to create acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps balance mood and memory. Dark, leafy greens –

Dark, leafy greens are a great source of brain-healthy nutrients like vitamins, fibre, folate, lutein, and beta carotene. When consumed, they provide long-lasting energy. Best of all, there’s many different kinds of dark, leafy greens, including spinach, broccoli, kale, and more. Peanut butter – Yes, that’s right: peanut butter. Not only is it tasty, but peanut butter is also full of lots of healthy fats

and protein. Just a spoonful of peanut butter can keep you on task for a long time. Fresh fruit – Forget chocolate, candy, and energy drinks: fresh fruit is here to save the day. Fruits such as apples, oranges, bananas, and even blueberries have sugar that will not only give you an energy boost, but will also sustain it. Plus, they won’t make your teeth fall out anytime soon!

Rubbers stretch out to lead table tennis Unorthodox Rubbers have taken the lead following the third round of matches played in the Marlborough Table Tennis competition. They beat Ping’s Team 9-3. Matthias Krönert filled in for Simon Bishell and won his three singles comfortably. Jeff Sawyer backed him up with two wins. Malcolm Honour won a single and did well to take Ping Muanwong to five sets. Ping won two singles and Warren Haszard one. Ken’s Team beat PJ’s 7-5, winning three of the last four matches. Billy Hebberd beat Josh Sim in the last batch of singles matches before Ken Thompsett and Jason Kennedy played out their customary five

setter, with Ken taking it 11-7 in the fifth to remain unbeaten on the night. Ken and Billy won the last double to get the seventh point. Peter Cowdrey won a double and just lost out to a tenacious Peter Wells. Jason ended the night with two wins with Josh and Peter Wells winning one each. It was great to see Marion Wood back in action after having broken her playing wrist on June 1. Playing with daughter Jacqui and granddaughter Vanessa, Marion won both doubles as the Lost in the Woods team were pipped 23 games to 21 after matches were drawn 6 all with Gone Loopy.

Matt Pigou won his three singles, hitting his forehand with great confidence. Kylie won a single and came close against Vanessa, going down in a thriller. Marcus Osborne beat Marion 11-9 in the deciding set. Rory Osborne had a great night as JNR beat Zac’s Team 8-4. Rory started things off with a five set win over Peter Welch, before beating Zac Cowdrey. He then followed that up with a win over Rob Honour. Nathan Watson was a class act, with his attacking play bringing him three wins. Joseph Ruwhiu picked up a doubles win. Alex’s Team beat Matt Millar’s team 21 games to 20 after matches were drawn 6 all.

Earlier Alex Kennedy and John Diamanti had won two each with David Smith winning one. Matt Millar carried on his Perry Shield form with three wins. In his 16 years or so in Blenheim, Matt has shown an uncanny ability to change his game to make it as hard as possible for his opponents. Steve Rowsell won a single with Barbara Burkhart winning a double with Matt. Points: Unorthodox Rubbers (Simon) 25; Ken’s Team 24, Gone Loopy (Matt Pigou) 23; Lost in the Woods (Jacqui) 23; JNR (Nathan) 22; Alex’s Team 19; PJ’s (Jason) 17; Matt Millar’s Team 17; Zac’s Team 15; Ping’s Team 10.
