Mary’s gesture

By Celeste Alexander Blenheim retiree Mary Parker is well known for her striking Daffodil Cakes which she bakes and decorates for the Marlborough Cancer Society to raffle off.

This year’s cake has visited local supermarkets in recent weeks with volunteers who have sat selling raffle tickets.

At first glance this cake is bright with its yellow flower decorations, but on closer inspection one will notice the delicate, hand-crafted daffodil flowers made by Mary, adorning the cake.

Impressed? A lot of work goes into making these cakes, but it’s been a labour of love for Mary who, this year, has made her 31st and potentially last Daffodil Day cake.

Daffodil Day cake raises money Continued from page 1.

Mary was born in Blenheim, on Lakings Road, and grew up admiring the artistic cake decorating skills of her mother Frances Hood.

“Mum was an accomplished person,” Mary says. “She was one of the founders of the Plunket Society here in Marlborough and went on to the national executive board.

“She was a very good cook! People would bring her cakes and she would ice them with almond paste and royal icing, then she would pipe on designs,” Mary says.

Later in life as a young mother, Mary gradually developed the skill of cake decorating and went on to become a founding member of the Marlborough Cake Decorators Guild.

In the early years of her cake decorating she never believed she was good at what she did, despite a number of people “raving” about her skills.

“I thought it was because they hadn’t seen any good decorated cakes,” Mary laughs.

“My sister-in-law tricked me into entering a local competition by contacting the polytech and asking them to send me the entry information.

“So I did, I entered simply to prove that I was not as good as what people thought I was, but instead I won it!

“No one was more surprised than I was,” she grins.

After her win, Mary discovered a cake decorating guild in Canterbury and wanted to join, but the membership was full so a few weeks later she was asked if she was interested in opening a branch in Blenheim.

“I approached REAP about it and at the first meeting we had 20 people come along. Not long after the national president came and we established the Marlborough Guild, and it’s been going ever since,” she says.

In the years that followed Mary was invited to demonstrate around the country and even overseas in Australia, America and Canada.

But her involvement with the local Cancer Society did not start until her husband George Parker was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

“The cancer had also shifted from his bowels to his liver… In those days there were no treatment options and he passed away,” Mary says.

One of Mary’s friends, Margaret Parker (no relation) was involved with the Cancer Society and men-

tioned they were starting Daffodil Day in Marlborough. She asked if Mary would make a cake for a raffle.

“I’ve made a cake every year since,” Mary smiles. “It’s been something I could do for the society.

“When you are given skills like this, they are of no use unless you can share them.”

Mary’s Daffodil Cake is a “proper fruit cake” made the old fashioned way, she says.

“It has 2.4kg of fruit with a lot of spices in it and cooked slowly.

“I’ve always enjoyed making the cake but now that I’m in my 90s I think it’s time to give it up and hopefully someone else can take it over,” she says.

Mary’s Daffodil Day cake will be at the Marlborough Cancer Society office this week if anyone would like to purchase a ticket.

Have your say on local road speed limits The Marlborough District Council is reviewing speed limits on all local roads across the region and Marlburians are encouraged to have their say.

The review allows people to provide their feedback on the speed limits they think are safe and appropriate on local roads across our region.

Marlborough Roads had planned the review in conjunction with the NZTA review of state highways in 2020, but had decided to review

local roads earlier in light of frustrating delays. Acting without NZTA resources, the council could set Marlborough speed limits through a bylaw with public consultation.

Marlborough Roads Manager, Steve Murrin, says it’s important locals get involved in the consultation by completing the survey, available on the council’s website. A hard copy is also available at council’s reception, the Blenheim or Picton libraries, or

College links last for decades

By Bill McElhinney Friendships forged in college days are certainly enduring.

Proof of this was seen on Friday when members of the Marlborough Colleges Old Girls’ Association gathered at the Clubs of Marlborough Taylor Restaurant to celebrate their 60th Jubilee.

“The purpose of the group is to support and to maintain linkages with Marlborough Girls’ College while encouraging friendships amongst former pupils,” Association secretary, Mary Griffiths, says.

“We get together at least six times during the year and funds raised are passed on to Marlborough Girls’ College.

“We are very supportive of secondary education in Marlborough and we are looking ahead to a great future.”

Marlborough High School opened in March 1900 with a roll of 18.

In 1904 the co-educational Old Pupils Association was formed.

Then In 1919 the Board of Governors elected to change the name to Marlborough College.

Forming the Marlborough College Old Girls’ Association began in 1924. Now known as Marlborough Colleges Old Girls’ Association, it encompasses past female pupils from Stephenson Street and McLachlan Street (since 1963) Colleges.

The group has gone through some major interruptions during its history, but has continued to resurface, Mary says.

“The first recess occurred in 1914 as World War 1 broke out. The group then restarted in 1924 with a ball, Perrys Cabaret orchestra providing the music.”

was in the grip of the influenza epidemic, forcing the closure of the College and it wasn’t practical for groups to get together.

The second recess happened during World War II, from 194446.The committee continued to meet but no activities were undertaken as women were required to do the jobs normally

carried out by the men, who were overseas fighting for our freedom.

The group was revived in 1947 with 60 members, only to go in to recess once again from 195058, then resuming full activities in 1959.

Past pupils and teachers of Marlborough College and

Marlborough Girls’ College are eligible and welcome to join the Association for $10 a year.

“We welcome those living within and outside of Blenheim,” Mary says.

Police are seeking information following two vehicle thefts in Kaikoura and Taimate Sunday night.

Police received a report that a crashed vehicle had been found abandoned and on fire on SH1 between Seddon and Ward around 5:15am Monday.

Police and Fire and Emergency NZ attended and the fire was extinguished and nobody was located with the vehicle.

Also a Taimate resident has reported that their vehicle, a 1988 white Toyota Hilux, with the registration WQ9123 had been stolen from their property overnight Sunday.

The vehicle was fitted with bull bars and an aluminium crate and also contained a 30-30 Winchester rifle and ammunition.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen either vehicle – which are similar to those pictured around the Kaikoura, Ward or Seddon areas Sunday night or Monday morning.

Man shot by police named The man accused of stealing a car and fleeing from Police last month, before being shot by an officer, has been named.

He is 28-year-old Jarred Heaney.

Jarred appeared at the Blenheim District Court on Monday via audio visual link before being remanded in custody to reappear on September 16.

Merit Award a surprise for Joanne Waikawa woman Joanne Taylor was surprised to win the Marine Farming Association Marine Merit Award at the association’s annual awards dinner at the Marlborough Convention Centre last week.

The Marine Merit Award recognises sustained service to marine farming.

Joanne has worked for the Association over a number of years and has been involved with the Environment Programme with Queen Charlotte College and Golden Bay High Schools aquaculture academies. She also runs the MFA office.

Scott Gillanders of MacLab in Nelson won the Marine Farmer of the Year award for work on improving the company’s environmental performance, better spat retention, developing a new app and overseeing the design and delivery of a new vessel.

Pete Grierson of Marlborough Oysters won the New Entrant award for his work implementing the revolutionary Flip Farm approach to oyster farming, which 30 New Zealand growers are now using or installing.

neering took out the R+D Award for his work developing the Flip Farm, which has now been sold to more than a dozen countries.

James Higgins of Sanford took out the Environment Award for work including reconditioning mussel floats and a project to grind them down for use in making plastic pipes.

Marine farming is one of the largest industries in Marlborough

and provides around 1500 jobs.

The industry produces approximately 80 per cent of all commercially grown seafood in New Zealand. On average 65,000 tonnes of mussels and about 6000 tonnes of salmon are harvested each year in Marlborough, together earning more than $300m in exports.

Aquaculture NZ CEO Gary Hooper told marine farmers that

greenshell mussel production was flat at around 90,000 tonnes per annum but it still competed with rock lobster to be New Zealand’s top aquaculture export.

Association president, Jonathan Large, said change was still required by the industry as young people could not understand why any items were lost off marine farming vessel and ended up on the beaches.

“The next generation is expecting a lot more from us,” he told the 80 people attending the dinner.

The MFA’s environmental certification programme requires all vessels to reduce environmental impacts, including boat debris.

Crews also take part in regular beach clean-ups where 60 per cent of waste collected now came from sources other than marine farming.

Picking the daffodils

By Aimee O’Hagan Yesterday morning saw members of the Blenheim South Rotary Club gather at the Marlborough Lines substation on the corner of Murphys and Old Renwick Roads.

They were there to pick the daffodils growing at the substation, which are all set to be sold to raise money for Marlborough Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day. Blenheim South Rotary Club member, Ray GaudenIng, says the club spent all of yesterday – and will continue to spend today and tomorrow – picking daffodils at various locations around Marlborough, including along Henricks Road, in Woodend, in Tua Marina, and at various other places and porperties around the region.

For Ray, who has been a member of the Blenheim South Rotary Club since 2002, picking daffodils is an annual affair.

“I’ve been picking daffodils with the club for as long as I can remember,” he says.

substation for approximately four to five years. The most recent lot were planted in late May, which meant they would be ready to be picked in time for Daffodil Day. Marlborough is one of the only places in New Zealand that grows, picks and sells “real flowers” for the special occasion, as opposed to fake ones.

EVs and batteries Dear Ed, Concern is being expressed about a pending mass of scrap lithium batteries as electric cars become more common.

Car batteries have to be replaced when they are down to 80 per cent of their as-new power capacity.

But thereafter they have a very useful life in energy storage for power systems, a fact that the receivers of such “scrap” are unlikely to shout about.

They are far from being yet another polluting waste product and will most definitely not be junked.

Obviously the e-car community need to talk seriously to the car salesmen and negotiate a fair price for when their motive power has fallen by 20 per cent.

A bit of history: London had a small fleet of battery-powered electric buses in the very early years of the 20th century.

Swapping a rack of batteries took about the same time as gassing up their petrol rivals.

The bloke managing the company was a fraudster who bankrupted it. Some things never change!

Hundreds here for euchre tournament

By Bill McElhinney A card tournament started in Blenheim 25 years ago has mushroomed into a national event which attracted hundreds of players to Blenheim at the weekend.

Clubs of Marlborough hosted the Clubs NZ 25th National Singles Euchre Tournament on Friday and Saturday, with over 300 players taking part.

“The tournament started in Blenheim 25 years ago,” Clubs Card Section president, Peter Hand, says.

“Enid Blacklaws was a leading light in getting it started. There were 10 teams and 72 players in the original tournament.

“Now we have we have 72 teams and over 300 players here from Kamo to Invercargill!

“There are still some players here today who took part in the original tournament.”

The annual tournament is played in the South Island one year and the North Island the next.

The Clubs bought 100 new packs of card for the tournament.

“We must have new cards for the competition,” Peter says, “but they’ll be used again our weekly games.”

For those who aren’t card players, euchre is described as an excellent social card game, simple in concept but with a high degree of subtlety in the play.

You need the four players, two teams, two players to a team.

Take out the ace through the 9 in each suit from a standard deck of 52 cards, making a deck of 24 cards for the game.

Each player receives five cards, and you play one card at a time; the player who lays the highest card in the suit of the first card played — unless someone contributes a trump, in which case it is whoever lays the highest trump card — collects all four cards together and stacks them in front of him, thus taking the point, or trick.

In euchre, you win a hand and score points for taking the majority of the tricks in a hand, which means winning three or more of the five tricks available.

You get more points if you take all five tricks. The first to a specified total of points, generally 10, wins the match.

You play the game with partners, but one member of a partnership can elect to go solo, if he or she thinks they have enough winning cards in their hand.

Only seven minutes was allowed for each game of the tournament, with players getting through 36 games on the Saturday and 27 games on Sunday.

Euchre is played in the RSA Lounge at the Clubs every Monday at 7pm, with between 18 to 24 players taking part, Peter says.

Cribbage is played every Tuesday at 2pm and the Marlborough Bridge Club also has a room at the Clubs.

Seddon water now safe to drink The people of Seddon can finally celebrate - from Monday they have safe drinking water from the tap.

Nelson Marlborough Health agreed to lifting the Seddon boil water notice, following the completion of a series of checks by the Drinking Water Assessor.

David Speedy, Drinking Water Assessor for Nelson Marlborough Health, acknowledged the huge effort put in by water treatment staff and technical advisors to collect and present the compliance information.

Council chief executive Mark Wheeler says this is was a milestone for the people of Seddon.

“Being able to turn on the tap and fill up a glass of water that’s safe to drink is something this community has been waiting a very long time for. That day has finally come,” he says.

“I’d like to thank all of those involved in the treatment plant project over the years, particularly the Awatere Seddon Water Group, who worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition.”

The Awatere Seddon Water Group - Rick Hammond, Carl Jackson, Malcolm Clemett, Martin Hall and Liz Cleaver – have also welcomed the news.

“With the newly refurbished

Awatere Memorial Hall due to celebrate its opening and our sporting facility repairs completed, our wee town is well on the way to recovery after the destructive earthquakes of recent years,” group secretary, Liz Cleaver, says.

Efforts to provide safe drinking water from the tap in Seddon have been underway since at least 1975, and over the years there have been many attempts to tackle the issue. From the outset, the council and residents had to wrestle with the cost of modern water treatment for a small community.

After years of discussion, the council agreed to fund half of the cost of the treatment plant from its reserves. The project also received a $1 million government subsidy.

The balance was shared between Seddon residents through a capped annual charge on households in the scheme, and through a charge spread across other ratepayers in Marlborough’s water supply rating areas.

Council will continue working toward treatment for water supplied to rural households in the Dashwood and Awatere South rural zones. In the meantime, the boil water notice remains in place for these zones.

Help for the Solomon Islands Local woman Bridgette Knox visited the Solomon Islands nearly two years ago, and what she saw has inspired her to collect an array of items to send back to benefit the area where her partner grew up, as Celeste Alexander finds out.

Bridgette’s story began when she travelled with her partner, David, to his home at the northern tip of Malaita province in the Solomon Islands.

The couple stayed with his parents and surrounding family members and at the beginning, Bridgette says she was “taken aback’ by the raw beauty of the jungle, coastline, beaches and “wonderfully kept villages”.

“We arrived in the dark and the journey was a real indicator that a white face was an unusual sight, one that the children were both extremely excited about and others very alarmed,” Bridgette says.

Her first ‘shock’ was using the bathroom with a shower that had no walls.

“I soon forgot it was a problem and showered with a dress or lava-lava around me.

“Most people lived in beautiful grass huts; some had two and three rooms off them, with a wooden floor. They were totally sufficient and each hut had its own kitchen which consisted of a fire and all cooking equipment,” she says.

“I had never seen anything like this in my entire life.”

For the past two-years Bridgette Knox has been collecting items to send to the Solomon Islands.

She’s also now running a 'bra-drop' to benefit the women.

To pay for the container and shipping costs Bridgette has teamed up with local woman Erica Sprosen who is putting together a charity dinner and auction.

The ‘Solomon Islands Charity Dinner and Auction’ will be held on Monday, October 7 from 6pm.

Bridgette will also speak and share her story, so anyone interested in supporting this cause can

purchase tickets for $35 each and/ or donate items to the auction.

There will also be a ‘bra-drop’ at the All About You store for anyone wanting to donate bras in good condition.

Bridgette came across a 14-year-old girl struggling to walk with her cane due to medical issues caused by polio.

“Her aunt told me she had been waiting her whole life for a wheel chair.

I was told this young girl was one of many others you couldn’t see.

“I also heard a lot of the locals talking about ‘the clinic’ where medical services are provided. The clinic was the main vein for up to 45,000 people.

“A nurse went on to tell me that many died while others were in need of operations. There hadn’t been a doctor in 50 years… the memory still

haunts me.

“I felt sick from my naivety and for not realising such conditions could exist, not there in such a beautiful place,” she says.

Bridgette was also moved by the number of times that small children would ask her if she had a small book in her bag.

“I didn’t have one and felt unprepared.”

Among all of Bridgette’s experiences it’s very clear for her that the country is beautiful and the locals warm and friendly, however there are many resources lacking and unfortunately for most, there simply is not enough money to purchase what they need.

“At the end of the day I was visiting a third world country and although the outward appearance left a lot to be desired, the heart of the people runs deep. Their fight for survival has made them kind, strong, extremely loving, loyal and most of all, they have honour.

“There are no benefits there, no DPB, few jobs, and wages are meagre.

“I cannot walk away from what I have seen and I cannot close my eyes and look the other way. I am human, we are one family and I feel a great responsibility to help my brothers and sisters of the Solomon Islands.

“If you feel you want to become a part of this journey, your contribution is the only way. It will provide a stepping stone to a brighter future for the children of tomorrow,” she says.

Since their return nearly two years ago, Bridgette quickly set about collecting items to put into a container which will be shipped over this Christmas.

She has received donations of medical supplies from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board such as beds, nebulisers, walking sticks and walking frames.

She has also received donations of paint from Resene, books, puzzles and writing materials from local schools and kindergartens.

Free seminar aimed at helping job seekers

By Bill McElhinney New and intending New Zealanders in Marlborough can benefit from a free information evening being run by the Marlborough Citizens Advice Bureau.

“We have many immigrants and overseas workers who come here for full-time and sometimes temporary employment,” Citizens Advice coordinator, Heather Ramsay, says.

“These people often don’t know what their rights are, so in conjunction with Immigration New Zealand we are hosting a couple of evenings to help these folk.”

Topics to be covered include preparing a CV, which in NZ can be quite different from an overseas CV, Heather says; writing a cover letter; employment law rights and responsibilities; having your qualifications recognised by NZQA; and the advantage of belonging to a union.

“The idea is to help people understand employment issues.

“Even immigrants who have been here for some time can gain more skills through something

like this. We can give them a better understanding of some of the things that are required when you’re looking for jobs in New Zealand.”

The CAB has obtained the services of three presenters with specialist knowledge.

Katie Ramsay-Davies, an employment consultant with Workbridge, will discuss preparing a CV, writing a covering letter and interview skills.

Nicolette Prendergast, regional labour coordinator for Wine Marlborough, will discuss NZ employment rights and responsibilities.

Steve McManus from the Amalgamated Workers Union will talk about employments rights and the benefits of belonging to a union.

Although the seminar is aimed at new and intending New Zealanders, anyone can come along.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions and supper will be provided.

The free seminar is being held at the CAB Alfred Street rooms on Tuesday, September 3, from 7 to 9pm.

I survived - twice!

By Celeste Alexander Edna Stanley has been busy taking orders from businesses for bunches of fresh daffodils to be delivered this week.

Behind her friendly smile and cheerful laugh is the determination of a strong woman who has beat cancer not once, but twice!

After going through the whole journey of ill health and diagnosis, to treatment and recovery, she has come out the other side with an appreciation for the work carried out by the Cancer Society.

The Irish-born real estate agent has lived in Marlborough for nearly 40 years, coming up from Christchurch when her children were young.

Edna has always been a busy lady with family commitments and her career, but a few years ago she began feeling unwell.

“I think in the back of my mind I knew it was something serious but as we often do, I went into denial,” she says.

After finishing an open home viewing Edna says she was feeling “dreadful” one Sunday, so much so that she asked family members to take her to Wairau Hospital’s emergency department.

“I was admitted for tests.

“The next morning I was told I had a tumour in my bowel and by 4:30pm that afternoon I was being operated on by Dr Stephen Vallance.

“He removed the tumour and some lymph nodes,” Edna says.

Unfortunately, the cancer had spread. Another tumour was found in her bile duct four weeks later and she underwent another

procedure to have a stent inserted into her bile duct.

“I underwent eight sessions of chemotherapy and thankfully the tumour shrunk and disappeared,” she says.

Once her treatment was complete, Edna was given the all clear and for five years her health returned to normal.

“My health was good as gold until 2017 when blood tests came back with some irregularities,” she adds.

The locum GP Edna was dealing with sent her to see a surgeon, who organised a CT scan which revealed a tumour in her liver.

“Thanks to the fantastic care of oncology and the hospital staff we got onto it quickly and I was sent to Christchurch to have the tumour removed successfully,” she says.

This was followed by six rounds of chemotherapy before she was given the all clear.

“I have been so fortunate to have had the support of my husband, family and friends, which was so important in my recovery, as well as the Marlborough Cancer Society,” she says.

Throughout her cancer journey she admits she knew very little of the Cancer Society, so one day she walked through the door to meet with Hilary Gill and Margot Wilson (retired manager).

“I didn’t realise just how much support was available. The comradery there is amazing and the staff and volunteers are always willing to put their hands up to help.

“The library there is also amazing with so much reading material available,” she adds.

Edna has since joined as a volunteer and has been helping to sell fresh daffodil bunches to businesses. On Daffodil Day this Friday she will also be packing up her car and heading out with a friend to the Riverlands Industrial Estate and Cloudy Bay Business Park to sell merchandise.

“I receive great support from these areas so I’m looking forward to it again. I support the

Cancer Society because if you don’t give back, you can’t expect to receive all the time,” she says.

Table tennis players strike gold down South Marlborough table tennis players brought back 11 medals after competing in the South Island Individual Championships in Invercargill.

Jacqui Wood, Vanessa WoodLin and Warren Haszard won seven Gold and four Silver.

Jacqui was in a tough qualifying group in the women’s singles, which was re-drawn after the withdrawal of the top seed.

Jacqui lost to Canterbury’s Jianyi Zhou by 12-14, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7 but played well combining slow and fast loops.

Jianyi is a chopper with a devastating attack, rated number seven in New Zealand, and is highly regarded in the Oceania junior scene. She went on to win the women’s singles.

Jacqui combined with the men’s Singles winner Hongyi Li in the mixed doubles and they reached the final .

Jacqui paired with Southland’s Shelley Neal in the Over-30 combined doubles and the B grade women’s doubles, winning both titles.

Her third title came in the Over-30 mixed doubles when she partnered Southland’s Jeremy Gibson for a win over the top seeds.

Jacqui lost close matches to Shelley, who is a member of the New Zealand squad, in the finals of the Over-30 and B Grade singles.

Warren, who must know the roads of the east coast of the South Island like the back of his hand, won three golds.

After wins in the D Grade doubles with Southland’s Andrew Fleming and the Over-60 men’s doubles with Southland’s Barry Ellis, Warren reached the final of the C Grade doubles with Southlander Damian Mitchell and they were successful in beating the top seeds by 12-10, 11-6, 12-14, 9-11, 11-8.

Warren also reached the final of the Over-60 mixed doubles.

Vanessa won the Under-15 girls’ doubles with her regular partner, Lydia Mercer-Beumelberg from Canterbury.

Va nessa qu a l i f ie d for post-section play in the under-15 girls’ singles and lost to Lydia, who was the second seed, in five sets.

Vanessa just missed out in qualifying in the Under-18 girls’ Singles, losing to Otago’s New Zealand junior representative, Ruby Anderson, in five sets.
