Formal fever

By Aimee O’Hagan One of the biggest and most exciting days of the year is fast approaching for local year 12 and 13 students. It’s the annual Marlborough Combined Colleges’ formal, which is set to be held on Saturday, September 14. But for Marlborough Girls’ College head girl, Sophie Whittall, and deputy head girl, Mereana Ave, the formal is not the only event there is to get ‘geared up’ for.

Since the beginning of term three, the two year 13 students have been organising a thrilling, never-seenbefore, conjoined event called ‘Preformal Prep and Party’. “The aim of [the pre-formal prep half] is pretty much to get volunteers from the community to help out, do people’s hair, people’s nails – all that jazz – and get them ready for the formal,” Sophie says. Continued on page 2.

Marlborough Girls’ College head girl, Sophie Whittall, and deputy head girl, Mereana Ave, have teamed up with representatives from Marlborough District Council, Marlborough Youth Trust, NMIT, and more to soon bring their ‘Pre-formal Prep and Party’ event to life.

College students organise pre-formal prep and party event Continued from page 1. Not only will there be beauty therapists, hairdressers, make-up artists, and other trained professionals helping students get glammed up, but there will also be dresses, suits, jewellery, and shoes available to hire. “We’ve even got some seamstresses coming in to do alterations and tape dresses in on the day,” Mereana explains. “So you could have nothing ready for the formal, and just come in on the day and get it done!” After polishing off their looks, students will have the chance to stay for the pre-formal party, where there will be music, photobooths, and complimentary refreshments. Both halves of the event will be held at the MYSpace Youth Development Centre on Kinross Street, September 14. Pre-formal prep will begin at 10am and go until 4:30pm, followed by the pre-formal party, which will start at 5:30pm and go until 7:30pm. Tickets for the occasion will cost only $10. Each ticket purchase will

allow entry for one student and five family members. “We really wanted to keep the cost down, because on top of the ticket there’s sort of an expectation that you get a nice dress, a nice suit, make up done, hair done,” Sophie says. “We’re trying to make it affordable for everyone.” According to Mereana, the purpose of the event is not only to give every student an opportunity to feel their best on the big day, but to also stay true to her and Sophie’s “theme” as school leaders. “Our theme is inclusion and making everyone feel like they belong, and giving everyone the same opportunities,” Mereana says. “This is the perfect way to make what we have to do for formal more about what we wanted to achieve.” “It’s made it all worth it,” Sophie affirms. From this point onwards, the girls’ fundamental aim is to further promote the event

in the community – especially to the senior students at Marlborough Boys’ College. “There’s some really nice suits there that people have dropped off,” Mereana says. “We’ve done quite a bit of promotion at MGC, but the boys still don’t know much. “It’s important that they know about it as well.” They also want to continue collecting as many donations as possible for the event. “It’ll be amazing to have more shoes, jewellery, dresses, suits, anything like that,” Sophie says. “Anything and everything that people are willing to give, even their time,” Mereana adds. In order to register for tickets, visit EventFinder or the Combined Colleges’ Formal and Marlborough Youth Trust Facebook pages. Registrations are open until Friday, September 13, and door sales will be available on the day. To book appointments with

There will also be suits and ties, available for boys attending the formal.

participating stylists, call the MYSpace Youth Development Centre on 03 579 4310 or simply drop into the office. For more infor mation, email Sophie at sw15144@ student.mgc.school.nz, or Mereana at ma15130@student.mgc.school.nz.

Plenty of shoes, dresses, jewellery, and more can be hired at the event. Despite organisers not being able to guarantee an "endless range or perfect match", there will also be make up and hair products available for attendees to use. A DIY station will be set up for those who want to get ready by themselves.

Hip hop cop graduates Sixty new cops graduated yesterday at the Royal New Zealand Police College, including Picton woman Charlotte Codlin. Constable Charlotte Codlin decided to join Police so she could make a difference for youth like those she helped through her hip hop dance school. When she was 15 Charlotte and her sister founded a non-profit dance school in Marlborough to give disadvantaged youth the opportunity to learn to dance who would not otherwise have been able to afford it. Constable Codlin is posted to the Tasman District.

Witherlea Kindergarten kids, Jack Troon (left), Kamryn Anderson, Max McKay, Meredith McKenzie, and Lochlan Parker, are five children taking part in the 2019 Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project.

Little green thumbs By Aimee O’Hagan Around 251 kindergarten tots from around Marlborough are getting the chance to experience what it’s like to plant, grow, and care for a sunflower. The reason? Witherlea, Springlands, Seymour, Picton, and Redwoodtown Kindergartens are all taking part in the 2019 Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project. The exciting, biennial competition – which runs from August 19 to December 10 – gives kindergarteners the opportunity to compete with other children in their region, specifically to see who can grow

the tallest sunflower or widest sunflower head. The winning kindergarten for each region receives prizes from Daltons and The Warehouse, and all participating kindergartens go into the draw to win a gardening workshop. In each kindergarten, a child wins the title of “Daltons’ best little gardener” (complete with a certificate and prize pack). According to Witherlea Kindergarten teacher, Cynthia Rangi, all kindergartens taking part are provided with sunflower-planting essentials to give the tots a head start.

“It doesn’t cost anything to take part in it or integrate it into the learning curriculum because we’ve been provided with everything – soil, pots, and seeds,” she says. Not only will they get to develop their knowledge of gardening – sowing and caring for seeds, seed germination, and taking daily care of their sunflowers – but they will also learn other helpful skills. “There’s all sorts of measuring, maths, science, life cycles... Everything,” Cynthia explains. “Children get to understand the seed to plant process. “It’s always cool to see how tall their sunflowers grow.

“They just love it. You always get a really good response.” In fact, some even develop unique ways of taking care of their sunflowers. “One year, we had a girl singing to her sunflower,” Cynthia smiles. “It was so cute.” The project has very much grown to become a community-oriented experience – with children taking both their sunflower and their new love of gardening home. “They’re including their families in the whole experience as well,” Cynthia says. “We like to bring it to our whole community.”

Chess Club makes a new move By Bill McElhinney The closure of the Queen Street cafe Joocy Loocy left the Blenheim Chess Club without a home. The club had been meeting on Sundays between 10am and 1pm at Joocy Loocy Cafe for the past 12 months. But Scott Street Cafe and Ice Cream Parlour Delicia has come to the rescue and tomorrow Chess Club members will be meeting there from 10am to 1pm for their games. “We’ll be meeting now on Saturdays,” long time Blenheim chess player, Rod Gray, says. “Club members are on hand to offer free coaching for beginners and it’s great seeing parents come along with their children. “Although sometimes the kids get better at chess than the parents!” Delicia co-owner Peter Bristow used to play chess when he was younger, and is glad to have the chess players come along, especially youngsters. “It’s much better for them to be playing chess than sitting in front of their digital devices,” Peter says.

Chess has been linked with improving children’s concentration, problem-solving and creative thinking – and even mathematical abilities. It is also said to help with memory storage and how young brains manage information. Delicia already hosts games nights on Wednesdays and Thursdays which attract a wide range of people. “We’re grateful to Peter for hosting us in a nice, family-friendly environment,” Rod says. The club is also looking for someone with some spare time and some social media skills to help improve their online presence. They also want to get the message out to the many backpackers around town, as in the past they have attracted a lot of chess player who have come to Blenheim from other countries where chess is regularly played. “You wouldn’t even have to be a chess player,” Rod says. “But we could really use some help in this area. So if you can help, contact blenheimchessclub@gmail.com.”

All have responsibility for staying safe at work “We get many questions from clients who have started a new job and are unsure of their rights and obligations when it comes to being safe in the workplace,” Heather Ramsay from the Marlborough Citizens Advice Bureau says. “Safety is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace. “No matter what industry or location you work in, you, your workmates and your employer all have health and safety rights and responsibilities. “As a worker, your rights include the right to receive the training and support necessary so that you can do your job safely, the right to any appropriate protective equipment, and the right to stop work if you believe it is unsafe or unhealthy to continue. “If you work in a high-risk industry or in a workplace with 20 or more workers, you can request a health and safety representative and your employer has to appoint

one. “You also have responsibilities. You have to take reasonable care of your own health and safety, ensure that you don’t cause harm to others at work, and comply with the health and safety policies and procedures at work.” Employers must have health and safety policies in place that deal with likely safety risks, and ensure that workers get appropriate safety training,” Heather says.

“Whether the hazard is to do with heavy machinery, large animals, chemical fumes or highly stressful word conditions – the employer needs to check what the risk are and have procedures in place to mitigate those risks. If there an accident does occur the employer must notify WorkSafe. “If you think there is an issue with safety in your workplace, you can tell your health and safety representative or your employer. If nothing seems to be done about your concerns, you can talk to the health and safety representative or your union representative. “WorkSafe can get involved if you and the employer are not able to resolve the issue. “If you are not sure where to begin, or just want to talk things through with someone, come and see us at 25 Alfred Street. We can help you work out what your options are if you feel your workplace is unsafe and your concerns are not being

adequately addressed. “We’re open week days 9.30 am – 4.00pm. You could also phone us on 578 4272 or toll free on 0800 367 222, or send us an email marlborough@cab.org. nz. We also have information about employment rights on our website www.cab.org.nz.” Employment Rights and Responsibilities are the focus of CAB’s next Information session which is being held at 7pm on September 3 at 25 Alfred Street. Everyone is welcome. Citizens Advice Bureaux is an independent community organisation offering a free, confidential and independent service of information, assistance and referral from 83 locations stretching from Northland to Invercargill. Last year volunteers received around 500,000 enquiries on issues ranging from electricity, immigration, housing and employment to consumer rights, health and family.

Farm-style playground to open at Mark Smith Reserve Come along this Saturday 31 August at 11.00 am to help officially open Blenheim’s latest new playground, built in the new Boulevard Park on Taylor subdivision, on Turnbull Drive. On Taylor Pass heading south, turn right on to Laird Street and you will see the new playground at the end of the street. The new playground has a colourful agricultural theme, including a real tractor modified for playground use, a windmill,

dray-style seating, upcycled equipment from Pollard Park, a basket swing and stepping poles. The reserve is named after Mark Smith, respected stockman and long-time farm manager of the Wither Hills, who sadly died in 2015. Mark leased the Wither Hills Farm Park from the Council for many years and looked after more than 1000 hectares of grazing sheep and cattle.

New playground for Renwick A new Aztec-themed playground has just opened at Renwick Domain. The initiative was driven by sports user groups, Renwick Smart + Connected and the Renwick Sports Centre Board, who all wanted to see the children of those playing sports kept active during games. Fully funded and constructed by the Council, the new facility is already proving popular. Joe Keighley, chair of Renwick Smart +

Connected, welcomed the opportunity to get the community together to celebrate the opening on 18 August. “Events such as this are all about celebrating the progress being made to enhance the quality and connections of village life through new community facilities.” The next project in the pipeline for Renwick is developing a village green just to the right of the Domain entrance, as part of its Small Townships Plan.

Community News – Te Ara Mahi Positive Ageing – Living options in retirement years One of the biggest decisions made later in life is whether or not to stay in the family home. Sometimes the issue is taken out of our hands through a family decision, perhaps for health reasons. Sometimes the thought of another winter in a large, older-style home is motivation enough to consider downsizing to a smaller, low maintenance property, or a retirement village, which is an option for some. There are big issues to consider given that, for most people, their home is their largest investment. The financial implications of continuing to live independently and paying for necessary services or moving into a retirement village will depend on individual circumstances. It’s important to consider all the costs and the issues before any pressure comes on to make a decision.

The Commission for Financial Capability (previously known as the Retirement Commission) has information on its website about some of the personal, legal and financial implications to consider before settling on a retirement home. They have also produced a booklet ‘Thinking of living in a retirement village’ that provides information for intending residents, their families and existing residents of retirement villages. It includes practical tips to help you consider your personal circumstances and motivations for choosing retirement village living over other options. It also covers some important legal concepts and terms used in retirement village contracts and the financial implications of living in a retirement village. You can access the booklet via the website: www.cffc.org.nz/retirement-villages/living-ina-retirement-village/

The Sun Think carefully Re: Vote Carefully - the MDC population forecasts do include deaths so the population is definitely growing, not shrinking as the person who sent the text stated. I agree, think carefully about who you vote for. Have they been visible in the Community in a positive way, do they respect others views and can you trust them?

Second to none

Reading in Marlborough express regards to Blenheim Shops closing: It seems very obvious to me, not new food outlets are needed, not new added flower pots and trees, I maintain there is a crucial need of a shopping mall, bringing in good retail chains, I can think of several that would drive people into town. It’s not rocket science. May I say too, hells pizzas are likely to not draw many in, the very name puts thinking people off. There are enough food outlets in this town. Also Blenheim remains old and staid, remaining in the dark ages re traffic lights, and rubbish removal. ESPECIALLY in the current NO PLASTIC bag climate NATIONWIDE.

I would like to endorse the text talk message on “Our Lifeline” in the Sun paper 9th August. Our Blenheim hospital team are second to none - cannot thank them enough for their dedication and patient support. Thank you.

There for you To the Feel like a criminal 23rd August. I didn’t feel like a criminal at any stage while I was shopping or leaving Bunnings, I have found the meet and greet people very helpful, one also noticed I had been over-charged by one plant, I myself are very grateful they are there for all their customers. Interesting how some people feel like criminals, they may feel different if it was their business, then again may have nothing better to do than moan. They are there for you and Bunnings.

What a great day – something for everyone while going to a good cause. Thanks to all owners of beautiful cars & bikes who gave up Policy their Sunday for this event. Good to see also Re Feel like a criminal. We felt exactly the same up and coming members (grandkids) being and questioned it, reply was it is policy. Our involved. So well done. policy now is to go to another shop.

Not the way to treat others

Creating jobs To “Feel like a criminal” if the shoe fits wear it, but if you’re not a criminal why do you mind having someone stamp your slip? Perhaps having someone at the front door is their way of hindering theft and creating a job for someone who needs it.

In reply to George Street Retailer. You parked for 7 weeks for free when no meter in place ALL DAY. Council approached US re YOU doing that, we chose not to respond. Now you park for 6 hours plus out front and move car a space along ALL DAY. A polite question NOT a request blown out of proportion. Perhaps not the way to treat other retailers.

Singled out Re: feel like a criminal at Bunnings I also get the same treatment but at the checkout. I stand in the queue & watch an array of people walk through with all sorts of bags not being searched. Comes my turn & the inevitable i’ll need to check your bag REALLY!!! When I ask why I’ve had ‘size of bag’, ‘we check everyone’s, even ‘your bag is open’ when it was zipped shut & I’d only opened it to get my wallet out to pay. The sign says ‘we have the right to search all bags’ but they didn’t search my wife’s, the lady in front of me with the big open top shopping bag or the teen who walked through with the pack over his shoulder.... Just me, yup it makes me feel like a criminal, singled out & humiliated.

Re: Driving Safely I think you would find that if you stopped in the middle of the road for no reason while sitting a drivers test it would result in a fail, due to disrupting the flow of traffic. Also, think cellphone driver was trying to point out that hands free and non hands free is no different, both require concentrating on your conversation and less on driving.

Two vehicles stolen Dog park opening By Community Constable Russ Smith A stolen car was found crashed, abandoned and burning in south Marlborough, near the same place a ute went missing on Monday night. A white 1994 Honda Civic was found on fire and abandoned on State Highway 1 between Seddon and Ward, about 5.15am on Tuesday. Fire crews and police attended the scene and the fire was extinguished. Police found the car had recently been

stolen from a property in Kaikoura. A white 1988 Toyota Hilux was also stolen overnight from a property in Taimate, between Seddon and Ward. The ute had bull bars and an aluminium crate, and also contained a 30-30 Winchester rifle and ammunition. Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen either vehicle around the Kaikoura, Ward or Seddon areas They can contact Police on 105, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Local therapist to host talk By Aimee O’Hagan It may look like a difficult word to pronounce, but managing breast cancer surgery side-effect, ‘lymphoedema’, is fairly simple if it is detected early. That’s according to lymphoedema therapist, Kate McNabb, who is teaming up with local breast cancer survivors dragon boating team, Simply The Breast, to educate fellow Marlburians on the debilitating condition. Saturday, September 7, will see Kate holding an interesting but informative talk about lymphoedema at the Well and Good Health Centre, 1 Grove Road. The talk will start at 1:30pm, and a gold coin donation is required on entry, with all donations set to go towards the Marlborough Cancer Society. Food and drinks will be avail-

able for attendees to enjoy. Chairperson of Simply The Breast, Denise Neal, says that Kate will teach attendees about the “signs of lymphoedema and what we can do to look after our limbs after surgery”. “She is passionate about educating people to know the symptoms of this lifelong condition,” Denise says. “Kate has over 13 years experience in a range of fields of physiotherapy, including cancer rehabilitation, lymphoedema management, yoga/exercise therapy [and more]. “We have done this once before and had a great response... Even Simply The Breast team members learnt things they were unaware of!” Spots are limited, so call Denise on 021 131 2213 to book a seat.

Simply The Breast (dragon boating team) members - including chairperson, Denise Neal (left), and team member, Sonya Fuldseth (right) - have collaborated with lymphoedema therapist, Kate McNabb, to teach others about the signs of the condition and what people can do to take care of their limbs after breast cancer surgery.

Winning stars meet with their charities By Celeste Alexander The show has been and the performers are back into their normal routines again, but the success of the show continues to be celebrated; particularly by the charities nominated by the winners. The Stars In Your Eyes 2019 prize money won by the top three performers is what goes directly to their charities so this week, the winners met with representatives from their charities to handover cheques. First place winner Lieke Tegels (Lady Gaga) nominated the Graeme Dingle Foundation for Marlborough, winning them $1000. Lieke also went along to one of the Foundation’s Kiwi Can sessions at Whitney Street School

last week to experience what it’s all about. Of course, Lieke couldn’t help but sing with the kids and there’s no guessing which song she chose! Second place winner Chris Valli (Boy George) nominated Diabetes Marlborough due to his own experience as a Type 1 Diabetic. He was proud to win the organisation $500. Third place winner Iona Panoho (Aretha Franklin) nominated the Upbeat Development Orchestra and Theory Club where she volunteers, winning them $250. Stars in Your Eyes 2019 organisers Liz McKay and Robyn Simmons say the feedback from the show has been “overwhelming”.

“It was a really positive, rewarding and successful show and the support we received was phenomenal,” Robyn says. “Our celebrity host Tina Cross was really impressed and was perfect for the role.” “We would love to thank the community as a whole because without your support, it wouldn’t have been this successful,” Liz adds. This year’s Stars in Your Eyes show has raised an incredible $35,000 for the Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation. Asked if there will be another show held next year, Robyn and Liz say; “Yes we hope to do it again next year, so people should start thinking about who they might like to audition as!” There were over 120 volunteers

Family brings Pita Pit franchise to Blenheim

For all Commercial HVAC and Refrigeration

Proud to be supporting Pita Pit with their Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning requirements

It’s been a two-year long journey but the Pita Pit Blenheim franchise is here, it’s open and ready to serve you delicious, healthy food. Blenheim couple Heather and Mark Bowers are thrilled to see their business finally open and are so excited to welcome the public to enjoy everything that Pita Pit has to offer. “Oh my goodness, the feedback and support has been amazing,” Heather smiles. “I already have my first catering order!” “We have had so much interest since work on the building began and people are really excited to see Pita Pit come to town,” she says. The idea to open a Blenheim franchise came when the couple were thinking about a healthy fast food option. “We do a lot of travelling with our daughters who play sports, so when we were away Pita Pit was the one place we could all agree on to eat at,” Heather explains. “Then one day, I just woke up in the middle of the night with the idea of having a Pita Pit food truck. I contacted the company’s head office the next morning and left a message. “They called me back that day and asked if we would be interested in opening a store, rather than a food truck. “We thought the idea sounded wonderful so we decided that’s what we would do,” she says.

The Bowers family; Rosie, Lilah, Heather, Claire and Mark. Heather and Mark are proud to bring the Pita Pit franchise to Blenheim.

The next step for Heather and Mark was to find a building suitable for them, which they both admit was the biggest challenge. “We were looking for a building since 2017, one which fit our vision. This building was already set up as a cafe and we loved Main Street as it’s busy and still walkable from town. “All of our neighbours have been so supportive and patient

with all the trucks coming and going while work on the building was being carried out, so we thank them,” Heather says. The final step was to build a team of “Pita Pit superstars” who would be the friendly faces serving the customers. Heather handpicked each of her staff and over the past week they have undergone training on food preparation and service.

“We also have our daughters Lilah and Rosie working with us which we are super excited about. We are very much a family business and have a fantastic team so come on in and see us,” Heather says. Pita Pit Blenheim will be open seven days a week. Monday to Friday the hours will be 7am – 8pm and during the weekend will be 10am – 8pm.

MINUTES WITH

Lauren Palatchie Salesperson at Summit Real Estate Blenheim

 If you could donate $1m to any charity who would you choose and why? Oh my, $1M is a lot of money to give to just one charity. It would have to be shared amongst our local SPCA and Hospice, to Ronald MacDonald House, the Graeme Dingle Foundation and Lifeflight Westpac helicopter. The needs of these charities to help others is huge.  When you have had a bad day, what do you do to feel better? I don’t have bad days, only challenging ones.  What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been? Santorini ………… ha! I wish. Bucket list.  What is the best or worst purchase you’ve ever made? Best purchase has been my thermomix! It just does everything.

 If you could only eat 3 foods for the rest of your life, what would they be? Dark chocolate, bacon and red wine (I know it’s not food but I’m willing to compromise).  What thing do you really wish you could buy right now? Actually wish I could buy a holiday for the family to Fiji. What a way to wind down and have fun with the kids amongst such friendly and humble people.  Favourite programme currently watching? I love reality TV!  Who’s your favourite singer/ band? There are way too many I couldn’t name just one. I love a huge range of music from the very old (thanks mum and dad) to metal to hip hop and most things in between!

GARDENING THIS WEEK Fruit trees and roses: By Wally Richards I see that deciduous fruit trees and roses making strong signs of coming out of winter dormancy. There are critical times to implement preventive measures which, dependent on the weather and local conditions, will be applicable over the next two to three months. From last season there are disease spores that are sitting on the trees/roses and the ground underneath, waiting for the right conditions to attack new foliage, flowers and fruit. My suggestion is to spray with potassium permanganate (Condys Crystals) at the rate of quarter to a half teaspoon per litre of water with one mil of Raingard added. Try for total coverage of the tree or rose as well as the soil underneath. This will help destroy fungus spores and reduce problems later on such as black spot, rust, leaf curl etc. Remember that Condys stains, so be careful near buildings or fences you don’t want to stain. Now let’s look at a few specific problems, first stone fruit with curly leaf. There are two methods which have worked for gardeners. The first is to sprinkle Wallys Ocean Solids under the trees from the drip line to the trunk area. The traditional control is sprays of copper every eight to 10 days as the leaves are developing and untill after the disease time is past. You need to put Raingard with the copper as it will wash off in rain, and that is when the disease spores are splashed up into action. Some coppers are far better than others mainly due to particle size. The smaller the particle, the better the coverage of the target. Copper oxychloride is the cheapest and the less effective. Copper hydroxide is far

Codlin moth grubs ruin apples, pears and walnuts in gardens where they have established from past seasons.

better and copper sulphate in the preparation of Wallys Liquid Copper is the best, as it covers a greater range of diseases. Do not use a spraying oil with your copper spray as you then reduce the effectiveness of the copper. Many have found potassium permanganate at quarter to half a teaspoon per litre with Raingard is very good on the eight to 10 day cycle. If you have a bad problem use the liquid copper and potassium permanganate together. The important aspect is to keep a coverage of the leaves as they grow. Brown rot in stone fruit is a curse and treatment should be started after the fruit have formed. The best we have found is a combination of liquid sulphur, loiquid copper and potassium permanganate with Raingard added. No need to spray the tree, just the fruit every 14 days till harvest. A disease that attacks plums is called bladder plum. It attacks when in flower and later causes the formed fruit to be flat in the shape of a bladder. Spray with Wallys Liquid Copper for this, spraying the flowers that are open,

but only late in the day just before dusk when pollination will have finished for the day. Another plum problem is curly leaves after the flowering is finished. This is caused by the plum aphid feeding on the baby leaves as they emerge. Spray the tree with Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil a couple of times about two weeks apart. Aphids on roses and other plants early in the season can be easily controlled with a combination of Wallys Super Neem Oil and Wallys Super Pyrethrum (add Raingard), sprayed just before dark so bees are back home in their hives then. (Pyrethrum will kill bees) Codlin moth grubs ruin apples, pears and walnuts in gardens where they have established from past seasons. The moths are in cocoons either under the tree or in crevices on the tree trunk or branches. Check the tree for possible cocoons and with the aid of a small screwdriver they can be killed. Then under the tree, deeper in the soil is the enemy. If you have free range chickens they will root out the cocoons and eat them.

In times gone-by some gardeners would plant marigolds under the tree before winter and then in the spring. The smell of the flowers would confuse the moths when they emerged as they could not smell the tree and the apples above. Hopefully birds would eat them. Nowdays a number of gardeners use Wallys Neem Tree Granules scattered under the tree for the same purpose. This should be done about the time the flowering is happening. The moths are not going to emerge until the apples have set and are growing. A pheromone codlin moth trap can be used in vicinity of the tree to catch male moths when they are on the wing. Citrus trees should be given a good spray of Wally Liquid Copper with Raingard at this time to prevent a number of diseases. Neem Tree granules should be applied under the tree to control pests, including borer. It is also about time to apply natural fertilisers such as animal manures. Happy spring gardening. Singles players retain titles in table tennis champs Nathan Watson and Jacqui Wood retained their singles titles at the Alpine Motel Marlborough Closed Table Tennis Championships played last Saturday. In a repeat of the 2018 final, Nathan beat Alex Kenned in another high quality encounter between these two players. Both attacked well with Alex hitting some great winners to level the games scores at 2-2. Nathan turned on the power in the next two games to take the match. Nathan had a tough match in the semi-final against Matthias Krönert as Matthias pushed , chopped and hit to get to 2 sets all, before Nathan again hit with more power to win. Alex reached the final with a win over Matt Millar. In the quarter finals, Alex won a great match with Matt Pigou, with both players firing forehands at each other.

The two singles finalists combined to win the men’s doubles final over Matthias and Matt Pigou. Jacqui beat her daughter Vanessa Wood-Lin in the final. Jacqui was able to score points with powerful topspin shots, but the left-handed Vanessa did well to win the second set with some cross-court forehand winners. The mother/daughter combination, who reached the semi-finals of the women’s doubles at the South Island Champs last week, beat Kylie Hurren and Megan Stratford in the women’s doubles final. Alex and Vanessa beat Jason Kennedy and Jacqui in the final of the mixed doubles. In the final of the under-21 singles, Alex beat Vanessa. Earlier in qualifying, Vanessa beat Josh Sim, who reached the quarter finals of the men’s singles.

In the 22-39 grade, Nathan beat Matthias in four sets in the final. Matthias was in an interesting qualifying group as he just beat Jacqui 12-10 in the fifth set. Matt Millar dominated the Over40 Grade winning three titles. In the men’s singles final, he beat Jason Kennedy in straight sets . The two singles finalists then combined for a win in the open doubles over Kylie and Kristin Ruwhiu. His third title was gained when he paired with Kylie for a win over Jason and Kristin. Kylie took the women’s singles title from Marion Wood. The second seed, Warren Haszard, beat top seeded Ken Thompsett in the final of the over50 singles. Warren did well to keep the ball away from Ken’s forehand. Malcolm Honour beat Peter Welsh in the final of the over-60s.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Where’s my Wagner? The Black Caps have missed a trick by not playing Neil Wagner during this Sri Lankan year series. As a fan, it seems baffling that the powers that be could sit Wagner, who is currently ranked as the sixth best test bowler in the world. The two tests in Sri Lanka have been hampered by rain but Wagner’s

heart and hustle was sorely missed in the first test loss when the pitch offered nothing for the traditional seamer. Perhaps the team feel obliged to play the under-performing Tim Southee because he is the squad’s vice captain but it would only be a member of the Southee family that

would suggest with a straight face that Tim trumps Neil at this point. The Black Caps missed Wagner’s variety and short-pitches variation. His tactics unsettled the Sri Lankan’s in our conditions last summer and on a placid pitch, it may have been worth exploiting the mental scars in unfamiliar conditions.

The Black Caps have shown tremendous loyalty to Southee who has been a shell of himself since the 2015 World Cup. The same could be said for Mitchell Santner who was mercilessly dropped for the second test. Santner has been given every opportunity to succeed in all three formats

and while he seems to be a handy enough 50-over bowler he has not made the same strides in tests and his batting remains inconsistent at best. There is a limited window left with test specialist Wagner and during a tour where New Zealand has floundered in many aspects, his passion and energy has been sorely missed.

Local Kart Club takes out the National Club of Year Award By Bill McElhinney Kartsport Marlborough club president Blake Greenfield and Club Captain Matt Broughan are still buzzing after picking up the National Club of the Year at the NZ Kartsport Annual Conference in Auckland last weekend. Kartsport Marlborough beat 22 other clubs from around New Zealand for the award, with Kartsport Wellington a close second. Katrtsport Marlborough had to present a written application to Kartsport NZ outlining the Club’s achievements over the past 12 months. These included growth in membership; marketing activity/resources; Have a Go Day results; publicity results; outcomes of events hosted/ promoted; facilities development; membership services enhancements; financial results and sponsorship and grants. “The club had to provide evidence of the above activities and results,” Blake says. “Our presentation was then placed on Clubshare for everyone around the country to view. “The final stage was an interview in front of some 50 representatives. “The hour-long interview hosted by Shaun Summerfield from TV3 CRC

Motorsport Sunday programme. “I have to say that it was tough and if it was a race, I got off to a slow start but by the third corner I was back in the race,” Blake says. “The criteria was tough, but Marlborough was triumphant in claiming its first trophy for Club of the Year in the club’s 40-plus years history.”

This is a great result for the club, Blake says. “The entire club has been very focused and worked hard over the past 12 months. “Improvements to the raceway facility, track and clubrooms and continued membership growth was key to the win against the other clubs. We are a family club with club members across three

generations. “Next year’s calendar was reviewed and set and I am pleased to announce that our application for hosting the 2020 South Island Champs was successful. This will be run in late October 2020,” Blake says. “We will also be hosting the Vintage GP in mid-March. This

is a big event as well, with over 140 karts attending the last event. So we have plenty to plan for next year!” Blake says it has been an exciting 12 months for the club and the next 12 months will more of the same. “We can all be proud that our efforts have been recognised by other clubs.”
