Dog park opens By Celeste Alexander Anything is paw-sible when you have a dog, and Renwick resident Sue Macdonald has proven that with her eight-year-long campaign to open a dog park. Thanks to the dedication shown by Sue and support of the Marlborough District Council the new dog park was officially opened on Sunday to the chorus of happy barking. It is Marlborough’s first dedicated dog park and is the size of a rugby field, located in Renwick at Foxes Island. Continued on page 2. Dogs all smiles for pup-arazzi Continued from page 1. The park features some canine exercise equipment, water bowls, bins and a bench seat. There are also areas for small and large dogs to enjoy separately. For Sue, having a safe area for dogs to exercise and socialise was something she felt strongly about. Sue is a member of the Marlborough Kennel Association and has spent a lot of time over the years travelling away for dog showing events with her Golden Retrievers. Where she visited there were usually dog parks she could visit, something she felt was lacking here in Marlborough. “There are also many places in Marlborough where you cannot take dogs, so I felt we needed an area that’s safe and accessible. “There are so many benefits to having a dog park for

both the dog and its owner, as it’s about the social connections,” Sue says. When Sue was a member of the Renwick Residents Association she first announced her idea. After the Association came to a close and was replaced by the Renwick Smart and Connected community group, Sue took the opportunity to appeal to council. In 2015 Sue stood up during a meeting with council staff and sold the concept. Her speech captured the attention of Jane Buckman who began working alongside Sue to help with the dog park plans and submissions. “Sue was so impressive when she stood up and gave her speech that I went away and did some research. The council then took our plan and made it better,” Jane says. “I’m not a dog owner myself, my cat owns me,”

Jane jokes. “I’m simply here to fly the flag for Sue and looking at the completed park, the final product hasn’t varied much from our drawings and has already proven to be hugely popular,” she says. “Council has done a brilliant job,” Sue adds. “I just about gave up during this process and it’s taken a long time but it’s now a real asset to the community. “I really want to thank Jamie Arbuckle, past and present councillors who supported this project, as well as Jane and her husband John for all their help,” Sue says. Jamie, the chairman of council’s animal control subcommittee, played a pivotal vote in getting the park up and running, and says approval has been given for two more dog parks to be opened in Blenheim and Picton.

Sue Macdonald and Jane Buckman were proud to be at the official opening of the Renwick Dog Park last Sunday as they had worked hard to get the project's approval from council.

Students help out at wetland By Aimee O’Hagan Year seven and eight students from Fairhall School pulled on their gumboots early on Friday morning to pay a visit to nearby Tempello Farm. The 55 students went to help plant about 600 dryland and wetland plants in a significant wetland area on the farm. All the plantings, which included carex secta, kahikatea and pink broom, are intended to help slow the flow of the harmful, non-water-soluble chemical phosphorus, which can enter waterways via run-off from nearby hills. According to Jo Grigg from Tempello Farm, the small stream in which the students planted the vegetation is a catchment for the Taylor River. “The stream starts on Tempello, flows past Fairhall Golf Course, then down to Fairhall School and on to the Taylor River,” Jo says. “We would like to create a sediment trap to improve the water quality and add biodiversity to the area. “The idea is that it may be an area that the Fairhall kids bike to. “We really appreciated their help in doing this planting,” Jo says. Fairhall School Enviroschools leader, teacher Colin Wood, says the project came about as a result of the two Grigg girls attending the

school and being part of the school’s Enviro Council. “We took the students out to Tempello to have a look, and they were keen to help with the environmental work the Griggs were doing,” Colin says. Fairhall has had a Green Gold Enviroschool Award since 2011. Nearly 90 per cent of Marlborough schools and kindergartens are taking part in the government-funded Enviroschools sustainability programme, the highest participation rate in New Zealand. Schools are encouraged to do native plantings and other projects to enhance their environment, such as edible gardens and creating corridors for native birds. The Fairhall Envirogroup helps promote activities such as recycling paper, looking after the native garden and composting system, promoting “pack it in, pack it out” for a wrapper free lunch policy and collecting aluminium tops (Can Tabs) for the Kidney Kids charity. There is also a koha table where produce from the school’s edible garden is available. “We’ve had some experience, as we had previously helped with planting at the Para Swamp restoration project,” Colin says. “We’d love to go back to Tempello later on to see how our planting project went.”

Park honours memory of Farm manager By Bill McElhinney The memory of long-time Wither Hills Farm Park manager, Mark Smith, was honoured at the opening of Boulevard Park on Taylor Park on Saturday. Mark, who leased the high- profile Wither Hills Farm Park from the Marlborough District Council for 23 years, died tragically in 2015. The well respected stockman lived with his wife Heidi and their two boys on their farm south of the farm park, where he grazed sheep and cattle more on the more than 1000

hectares he was responsible for. Mark beat drought and the devastating Boxing Day fire in 2000 which ripped through the farm park. He had been in Kaikoura on the day of the fire and rushed home to save stock. Following the fire he was instrumental in introducing a grazing policy to minimise fire risk in the hills. Mark’s sons William and Nicholas, his wife, Heidi and mother, Kaye were at the opening. Mayor John Leggett paid a special tribute

to Mark and his family as he unveiled the new reserve sign. The Smith family planted a Pin Oak in a corner of the park which will be there for years to come. The new park has an agricultural theme, including a tractor modified for playground use, a windmill, dray-style seating and upcycled equipment from Pollard Park. The new park can be accessed by heading up Taylor Pass, turning right on to Laird Street and you will see the new park at the end of the street.

Rangitane developing Horton St site By Bill McElhinney Rangitane o Wairau have big plans for their Horton Street property, acquired as part of its Treaty Settlement with the Crown. Iwi members gathered at dawn on Monday morning to bless the Rangitane’s new development on the Horton Street property, the first stage of a wider plan to develop a series of light industrial premises on the site. “We will develop it further,” Rangitane commercial property manager, Corey Hebberd, says. Rangitane Investments Ltd, the commercial arm of the iwi, has constructed a purpose built facility for lease by Marine & Outdoors, who are centralising their Koromiko and Blenheim operations on one site. “This is a great location for us,” Marine and Outdoors general manager, Adam Marshall, says. “We’ve closed our other operations and brought everything to this site. There’s plenty of room and you can easily pull in here with a boat and a trailer.” “The Horton Street development is an important part of our strategy to build a long term, sustainable presence for Rangitane within Marlborough’s growing economy,” Rangitane Investments Ltd chairperson, Mark Solomon, says. “Developments like this allow our investment company to support the iwi Trust to provide a wide range of whanau services, to strengthen the culture, identity and mana of Rangitane.” “This development represents the first stage of Rangitane actively investing in our Horton Street property,” Corey says. “The Marine & Outdoors development serves as a catalyst to the next stages of developing this site for the long term benefit of Rangitane” The development comprises office space, showroom space, workshop space and yard space. The site is in a easily accessible and adjacent to the Blenheim Railway Station and State Highway 1.

More on cycleways Dear Ed, Grandpa loves cycleways, and I’m sure most do. But in lauding the Eltham Road cycleway from a cyclist’s view, he has failed to see the disruption caused by the poor design, not forgetting the ratepayers footing the cost of a big blunder.

The speed bump in Beaver Road is typical of poor design. The notice says 25 kmh, but it should be 5kmh such is its exaggerated height. Eltham Road, a major arterial route from Maxwell Road to High Street via Lee Street has been reduced (dangerously) to a

marginal two way street. If cars are parked or a bus or even small truck approaches, it’s one way. Residents are hampered in accessing driveways. The deputy mayor had the arrogance to try to justify the mess created. As a nearby resident I have

seen very few cyclists using it. Grandpa was one of the very few. Besides, the brilliant Taylor River cycle way is the one students and other cyclists use. I only wish cyclists would warn as they come up behind walkers. Passive Motorist Blenheim

Dangerous drive on Maxwell Rd Dear Ed, This morning (Thursday, August 22) at around 7.15, I was driving north on Maxwell Road when a lateish, biggish model silver 4WD pulled out from outside the Hospital Dairy and did a u-turn. There was a car immediately in front of me as well as a vehicle right behind me.

After driving onto the grass verge, this driver then decided they would immediately pull out past the parked car in front of him/ her and out into the path of our three vehicles. This was an unexpected move for the driver in front of me (well, for all of us really), so that driver directly in front of me had to

By Celeste Alexander Just as many of us were preparing to leave for work last Friday, hundreds of locals were up bright and early donning yellow vests and setting up collection points around Blenheim for Daffodil Day. One dedicated group decorated the CBD area with bunches of yellow balloons which cheerfully greeted people as they walked through. The Marlborough Cancer Society office was a hive of activity throughout the morning with volunteers coming back and forth to replenish their daffodil buckets, while in the Market Place area there was plenty of entertainment on offer. Manager Felicity Spencer says it was “amazing” to arrive and see so much colour and enthusiasm for Daffodil Day. “It’s such a beautiful day with the sun out and loads of smiling faces everywhere. It’s so special to see everyone embracing Daffodil Day,” she says. Blenheim School’s Kapa Haka and Pasifika Groups put on an energetic performance for the morning crowd, led by Nan Kahu. Obituary

Local identity fondly remembered By Bill McElhinney Blenheim identity Alison Skinner passed away in Wellington Hospital on August 2, aged 93. Alison moved from Springlands Lifestyle Village in Blenheim to Sprott House in Wellington in January to spend her remaining months with her family. Alison was born Alison O’Conner almost 94 years ago in Blenheim. She was the daughter of a farmer and a primary school teacher and brought up on farm on the Old Renwick Road before moving to 14 Weld Street Blenheim with her dad when her mother took ill. She had two brothers, Peter and George. She was educated at St Mary’s School and was photographed a couple of years back as the oldest living pupil with the youngest pupil at the 150th anniversary. She was bright and industrious. She lived at Weld Street for more than 60 years, where she tended her bountiful vegetable and flower garden. She had three husbands: Noel O’Sullivan, and after a lengthy break, Bob Ferris, with whom she shared happy times and a great deal of caravanning around NZ, her daughter, Fran O’Sullivan, says. She met Noel through hockey and other sporting endeavours in the post war period. When they separated, Alison went to work to support her family, initially taking in sewing – she was a lovely seamstress, Fran says - and then to a lawyer’s office. She joined the Blenheim Borough Council in 1964 and had a 23-year career with the council, rising through the ranks to become administration officer, no small feat for a woman in those days. She brought a great deal of local knowledge to the job as well as having a background of working in the law office, which gave her an appreciation of legal matters and an eye for detail. She was known as a quiet but efficient organiser of council functions and many a council ceremony ran like clockwork thanks to her attention to detail. A newspaper article on her retirement at 60 said “Ask Mrs Ferris” was

a catchcry at council. She worked under five different mayors and five bosses. She knew the statutes inside out and was passionately involved in pensioner housing. Alison was an active member of Zonta and club president from 1990 to 1991. She was also a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and later a member of Probus. Long-time friend and former Zonta member, Paula Bayley, fondly remembers Alison’s time at the council. “I was involved in helping find accommodation for the elderly,” Paula says, “and Alison was so helpful when it came to council pensioner flats. “She helped me find accommodation for many deserving elderly in our community.” Many years later, after Bob’s death Alison met and married Jack Skinner and they moved to Muller Road.

She did not like people to see her incapacitated in later years and did not like to have to be assisted, preferring to do things for herself, Fran says. “So she asked her son Terry and grandson Gabriel James to escort her up the aisle of St Mary’s Church when she married Jack. She had broken her hip but she was not going to be photographed on sticks during her wedding ceremony.

“She helped me find accommodation for many deserving elderly in our community” “When I think of mum – I think about a gallant person and a fighter. A woman who was, in many respects, ahead of her time. “She was a leader on the sporting field. She captained the Marlbor-

ough provincial hockey team and was known for her aggressive yet skilful style. “She was a netballer and champion swimmer and diver and also a good golfer and loved getting out to Rarangi with the girls after work. I believe some of her records at Rarangi still stand. “She tried to teach me a golf swing as recently as three years ago at Christmas, using a big umbrella in my Wellington living room. “I didn’t take it up, as it was obvious even then that at 90 she would thrash me. “After Jack’s death mum found it hard,” Fran says. “She was losing her sight. She had congestive heart failure and a lot of pain from her stomach. “It was not safe to be on her own, so she moved to Springlands Lifestyle Village where her friends, Joan Blackmore and Nancy Hammond, resided. “After our annual holiday last

Christmas I went with her to Wairau Hospital to see the specialist. He said to her – you’re not going to live forever you know. “She decided she would come to Wellington where she could spend those final months so she could die in the company of her family. “She loved beautiful clothes and shoes and lingerie,” Fran says. “I had never noticed Mum’s scent until I unpacked her things after they were brought up from Sprott House after her death. It permeated the house. “I had held it together until I unpacked the beautifully handsmocked dresses she made for me as a toddler and the booties and shawls she crafted for us three children going back nearly 70 years now. “They were still with her from Weld Street, to Muller Road and then to Springlands lifestyle centre and on to Sprott House – they were stitched with such love and hope for her family.”

Couple ‘thrilled’ with outcome of raffle By Celeste Alexander When Aaryn and Ange Nicholson of Details Blenheim decided to hold a Father’s Day raffle, they initially thought $500 was an achievable goal. The couple were raising money for a charity that is close to their hearts – SANDS Marlborough (Pregnancy, Baby and Infant Loss Support). It was held in conjunction with The Roadhouse Breakfast which took place on Father’s Day. On the day there was a real buzz at the Roadhouse breakfast and with over 220 vehicles and motorcycles, people of all ages and beautiful weather. Aaryn and Ange say they couldn’t have asked for anything more.

The support they received by way of donations of raffle items and ticket sales poured in from the very beginning and on Sunday, the final tickets were sold and the winners were drawn. The final amount that Aaryn and Ange raised was a “whopping” $2540. “When we came up with this idea we were thinking if we could raise $500 for the SANDS organisation that would be great. Then with running the raffle in conjunction with The Roadhouse Breakfast (a motoring event held at the Riverlands Roadhouse on the 1st Sunday of every month) it grew into something incredible,” the couple say.

“The support from local and nationwide people and businesses blew us away. The prizes donated far exceeded our expectations as did the number of tickets sold. For the community to get behind and help raise money for such a fantastic, and sadly a very necessary organisation, is amazing! “We’d like to say a very big thank you to everyone for supporting this raffle,” they say. There were 45 prizes in total won including an exterior vehicle detailing package from Details Blenheim, tools and a tool chest from Repco, local wines and a number of vouchers from local businesses.

Still 370 dogs unregistered Have you registered your dog? Marlborough currently has almost 10,000 dogs registered, but unfortunately there are still a number of dog registrations outstanding. Maataa Waka is responsible for delivering the animal control service to Marlborough on behalf of the Marlborough District Council, and is located at 56 Main Street. Right now animal control officers are actively following up on approximately 370 dogs that are late for renewal of their annual dog registration. The fine for having an unregistered dog is $300, so if your dog is not registered it is recommended that you do it today. Your dog must wear a current registration tag to ensure your dog can be identified. The 2018/2019 registration was green, and the new 2019/2020 registration colour is yellow. If your dog is found not wearing the correct registration tag it may be deemed as unregistered. On a positive note, the 2019 Black Hawk National Dog Show is coming to Blenheim from October 2-5 and will see a large number of dogs coming into the region with their owners.

Have you registered your dog for 2019/2020 period? If not, visit Animal Control at Maata Waka on Main Street.

With this in mind, Animal Control Services are advising that dogs will be allowed in the Blenheim CBD for the month

of October. Dogs must be kept under control on a leash and owners must immediately pick up after their

New premises, larger range It has been three months since Bearings and Accessories made the move from Nelson to Main Street, and owners Greg Simpson and Liz McKay are really happy with the new location. The company has been serving Marlborough for more than 30 years and thanks to their building’s larger space, the retail side has been able to bring in additional new brands. Bearings & Accessories are the largest wholesale and trade supplier of bearings, power, transmission and engineering supplies in the top of the South Island. For those who have yet to visit them at 51 Main Street, Greg and Liz encourage them to take advantage of the ample offstreet parking and larger retail

selection. “It’s great to finally have the room to bring new products to our customers, so come through and have a look. “We have over 75,000 items in-store, coffee facilities for our customers and of course – friendly and helpful advice from our fantastic team,” they say. Products range from bearings, O-rings, mechanical seals, pneumatics, transmission, V-belts, stays, welders, trailer components, wheels and castors, oils and lubes, and tools to safety gear and first aid kits just to name a few. They stock trusted brands like Teng Tools, CM Trailer Parts, Starrett, Gear Wrench, CRC, Strata Welders, FAG and Timken Bearings. “We now also have a larger

Chopper crews test skills in Marlborough By Bill McElhinney The buzz of Air Force helicopters will be heard in Marlborough skies this week as the Air Force and Navy test their helicopters and crews around the mountain regions of Marlborough. No. 3 Squadron, normally located at RNZAF Base Ohakea, has brought three NH90 and two A109 helicopters on Exercise Blackbird and will be operating out of the Dip Flat Defence Area in Marlborough, while No. 6 Squadron, from RNZAF Base Auckland, has brought three SH-2G(I) helicopters to Woodbourne Air Base for Exercise Bluebird. Both exercises will run within the Raglan and Rain-

bow Conservation area, Tapuae-O-Uenuku Scenic Reserve, Inland Kaikoura Ranges and Mt Richmond Forest Park areas from Monday until Friday, September 13. Wing Commander Mike Cannon, commanding officer of No. 3 Squadron, says as well as the mountain flying, Exercise Bluebird provides an opportunity to project a rotary-wing task unit to a challenging environment, honing skills that would be required in deployed operations. Commanding officer of No. 6 Squadron, Commander Sam Greenhalgh, says the exercises are designed to train the helicopter crews in

high-altitude mountain flying operations, which is an essential skill at home and abroad. “As well as conducting flying in the region, crews will also learn and practise theory in meteorological considerations and alpine survival,” Sam says. In New Zealand these essential, life-saving skills are needed in search and rescue operations. During the exercise the crews will also help the Department of Conservation with track marking and carry equipment and building materials into hard to reach areas. More than 100 personnel go to Dip Flat for Exercise Blackbird to live in tents and cabins.

An Air Force NH90 helicopter and its crew helped DOC with some conservation work while at Exercise Black Bird last year. The helicopter transported loads of gravel up one of the paths to a hut in the Malborough region. Exercise Blackbird is conducted in the mountainous Marlborough region and is designed to train helicopter crews in high altitude mountain flying operations, alpine survival and preparing crews for national contingency activities. Vineyard heroes celebrate success By Bill McElhinney The unsung heroes of Marlborough’s viticulture industry had their time to shine recently in the annual Silver Secateurs competition. The 60 million grapevines in Marlborough have to be pruned, stripped and wrapped every year, and the people who turn out on frosty mornings to do this are vital to the wine industry. Winter mornings are hard enough for Kiwis, but for the Pacific Island seasonal workers in Marlborough on the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme, it can be a pretty tough adjustment. Marlborough employs more than 2000 RSE workers in winter and another 890 in summer and is absolutely dependent on the work they do. Each vine is a puzzle, and the work the pruners do is vital to the success of next season’s crop. Each of the region’s 60 million vines is handled several times during the pruning and growing season. The hundreds of vineyard workers make millions of cuts as they work their way around the province. Marlborough’s vineyard area is expected to climb to nearly 30,000 hectares during the next three years. To put that into perspective, that’s adding the entire Hawke’s Bay wine region into Marlborough, which is already New Zealand largest wine grow-

ing region. To celebrate the skills of the vineyard workers, the Marlborough wine community hosts an annual competition called the Silver Secateurs, which is designed to celebrate and support the people responsible for tending the vines. The competition this year attracted around 300 entries and is one of the biggest industry competitions held during the year. Silver Secateurs began in 1995 as a move to improve quality and provide recognition for the skills of the workers. It is also a way of showcasing to the public the important work that goes on in the vineyards. Thornhill Viticulture and Horticulture Labour Specialists was the winner of the Wine Marlborough overall contractors competition, and Max Maralau, frtom Vinecraft, won the Champion of Champions Trophy. The day before the Silver Secateurs a new competition was held which targeted mainly local vineyard managers and supervisors. The new event was sponsored by Swiss company FELCO, which supplies high quality pruning equipment to the New Zealand wine industry. The Felco Kiwi Pruning Competition was won by Kerry Hammond, of Starborough Vineyards, who gets an all-expenses paid trip to Switzerland in March next year to represent New Zealand at the world pruning competition.

Kerry Hammond in the red checked shirt, won the Felco Pruning Competition. He is pictured here with the Felco team.

Molly our Maine Coon girl has been missing from 30a Lakings Road since Friday the 23rd of August. Molly is a very large fluffy tabby and white girl with an enormous fluffy tail. She is seven years old and has been spayed and microchipped. She is shy and is scared of dogs. She has not been seen since she went missing which leads us to suspect she may have been adopted by someone or else has been accidentally shut in a shed or garage. So we are asking local folks to please check out their garden sheds and other buildings. If anybody has any information please contact us on: Ph 578 3875 or 021 405 995 or email: lizdavidson@xtra.co.nz.

Omaka Aerodrome is a hidden gem in Marlborough, but is well known on the world stage. With its grassy runways, wide open spaces, world class restoration projects on classic aircraft, and one-of-a-kind aeroplanes, it’s a buzzing community. For aviation enthusiasts, you can’t beat the ideal flying weather that the region offers. With facilities like this, it’s no surprise that a small town like Blenheim has individuals from all over the globe coming to check out its heritage. For Classic Aero Machinery Service’s Tony Wytenburg, the Omaka Aerodrome location is essential to his aircraft restoration work. The several grass runways provide ideal conditions for the many classic aircraft which are built and tested by Tony and

Water polo star coming to Blenheim Five time Olympian silver medallist water polo star, Tony Azevedo, is coming to Blenheim early next year to run a training camp. Marlborough Water polo in conjunction with Seawolf Water polo Auckland, are bringing Tony to Marlborough from January 20 to 22 next year to run a training camp for up and coming NZ water polo players. “The registrations to this camp are now open and there are already 19 people registered to come to the Marlborough Camp, from Otago through to Manawatu,” Marlborough Water Polo chairperson, Martyn Birch, says. “The camp is limited to 55 participants. It is likely Tony and his family will be in Marlborough for a few days before the camp sight- seeing and enjoying the Marlborough hospitality.” For more information see the Marlborough water polo website. If you are interested in playing water polo, contact Jack at Stadium 2000, or come to the pool, on Wednesday evenings between 5.30 – 8pm and talk to one of the committee.
