Family first College principal stepping down By Bill McElhinney “Hi Granddad, I’m looking forward to spending more time with you!” The video phone message from Wayne Hegarty’s oldest grandson in Nelson sums up the Marlborough Boys’ College principal’s reason for retiring. “I want to spend more time with my family,” he says. The wall of family photos in his office remind him every day that there are five children and seven grandchildren out there that he and his wife, Joan, want to see more of. “And soon there will be eight,” Wayne says. “There is another grandchild due to be born soon in Melbourne.” Continued on page 2. Boys’ College principal Wayne Hegarty is looking forward to spending more time with family when he retires in December.

Grandkids will see more of Wayne Continued from page 1. It is 10 years since Wayne came to MBC from his position as deputy principal at Rangiora High. In that time there have been ongoing changes in the education system and challenges at the local level, all of which Wayne has steered MBC through. “Wayne has contributed significantly to the college during his 10 years in the role of principal,” College board chair, Sturrock Saunders, says. “Wayne's focus has always been the boys and providing them with the very best learning and teaching opportunities to enable them to be the best they can be. “His strength and compassion has also been evident over the past few months while the school has navigated a considerable challenge and it is a testament to Wayne, his senior leadership team and staff that the school has continued providing a very high quality of education in a supportive and settled environment.” When Wayne began as principal in 2010, Marlborough Boys’ had two statutory managers, a debt of $1.8 million, and a $1.3m loan from the Ministry of Education. Student achievement was below that of similar decile schools but Wayne, staff, students and the community worked together to “turn the school around.” In 2012 the loan was repaid and initiatives put in place at the school that have seen student achievement rise significantly. Wayne has been discussing his retirement with the board for the past 18 months to ensure a smooth transition.

Wayne Hegarty in Nelson with grandchildren Aron and Hazel.

“I wanted to make sure there was someone here who could steer the college through the co-location process,” Wayne says. MBC is to be co-located with Marlborough Girls' College on the 13.2-hectare McLauchlan St site, with Bohally Intermediate moving to the current Boys' College site on Stephenson Street. Wayne will stay on in a part-time position next year to help his replacement settle in, and consult ahead of the co-location. “I’m not completely retiring,” Wayne says. “I’m setting up as an education consultant, but I’ll only be working

part time. “And I’ll be staying in Marlborough. I really like it here and I have shares in a launch at Havelock, so I’m looking forward to more time down the Sounds. “And I’m also looking forward to getting more value from my membership off the Marlborough Golf Club!” He will miss seeing the development at exciting new teaching initiatives college staff have introduced. “There are some really innovative things happening in teaching today,” Wayne says. “There is more meaning in learning, more teaching of things like resilience.

“The new colleges buildings will be impressive, but it is what happens inside them that really counts.” Wayne will also miss the regular contact with the college boys – “The time I spend walking around catching up, finding out what they did at the weekend. “But I turn 65 on December 24, so now it’s time for family.” The school will advertise for Wayne's replacement next month and the new principal will start at the beginning of the 2020 school year. A formal retirement celebration for Wayne is planned for later this year, with further details to be announced later.

Planting on Sunday It was wet and cold last Sunday, so the Grovetown Lagoon planting day was postponed. If the weather holds volunteers are invited to the Lagoon this Sunday at 9.30am. Meet at the Wairau Rowing Club at the end of Steam Wharf, Grovetown, for tree planting, weeding and mulching work.

Give te reo a go!

Rangitane o Wairau members brought Anton Matthews and his sister to the Rangitane Cultural Centre on Monday night for free fush’n chips and a Maori language lesson. From left: Donna Grace, Nick Chin, Sarah Lee, Anton's sister Maia Matthews, Paora Mackie and Anton.

Fush’n chips and some te reo on the side By Bill McElhinney “Phew – did you patero? “Maybe you need to do tiko!” Maori language tutor Anton Matthews reckons the best way to get kids to learn te reo Maori is to teach them words that will make them laugh. “Patero is pass wind – fart – and tiko is number 2s and they’ll laugh as they learn. “Then if they get too carried away you can give them: ‘Kati tena mahi – Stop that, you’re being silly!’” Anton, a former school teacher, was at the Rangitane Cultural Centre in Grovetown on Monday evening where around 120 people had come for a free Maori language lesson. Arranged by Rangitane o Wairau,

the evening started with free fish’n chips from Anton’s popular food truck, nicknamed the Little Fish Waka. Anton and his wife, Jess, and sister, Māia Matthews, run a popular Christchurch restaurant, Fush. The menu is in English and Maori and Anton sources only line-caught fish and recently stopped selling tarakihi because he learned the stocks were endangered. “As a youngster, my parents sent me to kōhanga reo and kura kaupapa because they wanted to give me something that they didn’t have,” Anton says. “They did their best to speak te reo Māori to me, but most of my reo came from my time at Te Whānau Tahi [Christchurch’s full-immer-

sion Māori language school” The devoted father of two says teaching his children te reo Māori is one of the most important gifts he can give them. “We speak only te reo Maori at home, so the kids are immersed in the language. And I’m lucky to have the support of my wife Jess, who is a pakeha, but who also learned the language. "Through te reo Māori my children are better able to understand and appreciate their Māoritanga and who they are. “My goal is to show people that te reo Māori is so much more than a language used on a marae. It’s beautiful listening to our language on the marae, but you can also use it to describe the world, and use

everyday words.” "I always give the example of the haka. We all get very proud when the All Blacks do the haka, but if we want to own the haka and be proud of the haka, then we need to own te reo Māori as well.” It’s not disrespectful to give the language a try, Anton told the Monday evening group. “If you give it a go with the right attitude no one will be offended. “Our Maori culture is also our unique point of difference here in New Zealand. As a people, it belongs to all of us.” Anton took the audience through a series of words and phrases they could use every day and received an enthusiastic response. Ka pai!

It’s Maori Language Week, so you might like to try a few of these words and phrases. Korero mai – say it with/to me. Ka pai – well done. Kia tupato – be careful. Ata haere – slow down. Piwari – cute. Kia tere – hurry up! (We’re gonna be late!) Kia ora – Hello, Hi. Mōrena – Good morning. Haere mai – Welcome. Haere rā – Goodbye.

By Celeste Alexander There are some great young minds in Marlborough which have been hard at work these past weeks exploring a range of science and technology ideas. Local students from schools all over Marlborough are taking part in the Marlborough Lines Science and Technology Fair and the Sun Newspaper was invited along to Renwick School last Friday to view some of the great work that’s been done. Fast food vs home-cooked, liquid densities and tornadoes in a jar were just a few of the experiments on display at Renwick School. For Oliver Cody, his project involved looking at how different types of cooking oil impacted on the preservation of fried chips. His display showed chips from fast food outlets such as McDonalds, KFC and a fish and chip shop as well as some which were homemade. “I found that the homemade chips were the best to eat as they showed signs of the least amount of preservation,” Cody says. “The McDonalds chips were the best preserved.” Duo Marcus Hook and Jake Webber experimented on which water temperatures would create the best swirling tornado effect using glitter, a jar, some detergent and water. “We found that boiling water spun the glitter for the longest amount of time,” they say. It was a tough task for judges who spent time speaking with the students about their projects Marlborough Girls’ College students M’Kenzie Webb and Jaimee Randall took up the invitation to help judge the entries as they too had attended Renwick School. “We were at this school last year so it’s neat to be back judging. Their ideas are really good… in fact some are better than when we were here doing our science fair,” they laughed. The idea behind the Science Fair, which has been evolving in Marlborough since the 1960s, is to highlight the role that science and technology play in our daily lives and to test the students’ imaginations and skills. Within the schools the projects are judged and those that receive top awards then compete at a regional level where they’re exhibited to the public.

Heidi van Staden and Piper Alexander dressed the part for a Sponge Bob theme and experimented on which liquids would Sponge Bob the sponge float the best on.

Sammie Joyce presented her project ‘Bubbly Bath Bombs’, looking at which oil makes the best Marcus Hook did his project with classmate Jake bath bombs. Webber called ‘Tornado in a Bottle’.

Liam Harcus and Bryn Blacklaws did their project on ‘Icecream’, looking at what type of ice or icepack will set icecream the fastest.

Lizzie Youngman and Eve Owers studied ‘Rock Candy’, looking at where rock candy grows best.

HIGH QUALITY USED The Nelson Celtic Pipe Band, with drummer Jimmie Henderson, celebrate at the world championships.

Drumming on the world stage It’s been three weeks since a battle between the best pipers and drummers in the world was held in Scotland, but local man Jimmie Henderson is still on cloud nine since returning home. A side drummer for the Blenheim and Districts Highland Pipe Band, Jimme was honoured by being asked by the Nelson Celtic Pipe Band to join them at the World Pipe Band Championships. The competition, dubbed a ‘spectacular event’, was held in Glasgow where over 220 bands travelled from all over the world to compete. “After 28 hours of flying, stepping off the plane I was shocked to see how similar the landscape of Scotland is to New Zealand,” Jimmie says. “I actually made the comment to a band member; “Have we taken a wrong flight back to NZ?” A total of 90 people from Nelson, including three from Blenheim, went along as were band members, parents and supporters. Jimmie says the drummers practiced for around four hours a day in the two weeks leading up to the competition. “The week before the nationals I was surrounded by dozens of pipebands playing for hours on end which was so inspiring to hear different stuff non-stop every single day,” he says. Richard Ellena’s successor installed By Bill McElhinney The 11th Bishop of Nelson, Stephen Maina Mwangi, was officially installed on Saturday, September 1. Bishop Steve was officially welcomed to the city by the Mayor of Nelson, Rachel Reese, before a procession of Bishops, clergy, Kenyan visitors and invited guests walked from the Christ Church Cathedral steps to the bottom of Trafalgar St, led by members of the Nelson Brass Band. Bishop Steve replaces Bishop Richard Ellena, who served in the role for 12 years and retired at the end of 2018. Richard and his wife Hilary, who formerly served at Blenheim Nativity Anglican Church, have now moved to Moenui in the Marlborough Sounds. Bishop Steve comes from a rich Christian heritage. His father and grandfather were Anglican ministers in Kenya. He served as a pastor and church planter with Nairobi Chapel for eight years. He was ordained deacon in the Anglican Church of Kenya in December 2003 and priest in December 2004. He also served as General Secretary of Church Army Africa in 2003, a society of Anglican evangelists based in Nairobi, Kenya. His role included overseeing more than 450 evangelists in nine African countries. Steve felt the call to New Zea-

Dear Ed, So another major building company has gone down the gurgler (Stanley Group) and guess who is left high and dry again? Yep, all the subbies who, in good faith provided goods and services and are now unlikely to be paid. It’s not the first time this has happened, but there is still little

or no protection for these folk. It’s time for a law change so that all debts to sub-contractors of a failed construction company are secured against any building materials and products the subbies had on site. And the money from sub-contractors held by construction companies as a guarantee their work is sound should be held

in government-managed trust accounts in a scheme similar to the residential tenancy bond scheme. Directors found to have traded while their companies were insolvent, or who have traded recklessly, should face legal action. Former prime minister Dame Jenny Shipley and other Main-

zeal directors failed in their bid to overturn a total of $36 million in damages ordered against them in a case taken by the liquidators of Mainzeal. Let’s have some more protection for the little folk, and more accountability from those at the top! Fair Go Blenheim

offenders. They’re not hard to find – try school drop-offs and pick-ups for a start. And then there are the tradies – no shortage of them scooting

around town breaking the law. Time for a law change. A stiff fine ($1000 would be a good start) and confiscate the phone. Drive Safe Blenheim

They’re still on their phones Dear Ed, The recent article in The Sun highlighting cellphone use by Marlborough drivers doesn’t appear to have had much impact. They’re still out there, clutching

The top three place-getters for the Upper South Island Registered Master Builders CARTERS 2019 Apprentice of the Year; 2nd place Abraham Rood (Blenheim), 1st place Jay Pope (Nelson) and 3rd place Daniel Small (Blenheim).

By Celeste Alexander Two Blenheim building apprentices have managed to nail top spots in an upper South Island competition, narrowly losing out first place to an over-the-hill competitor. The Upper South Island Registered Master Builders CARTERS 2019 Apprentice of the Year winners were announced at the weekend. Abraham Rood, 24, of Blenheim won second place. He was trained by BCITO and is employed by Ken Anderson Building Ltd. The judges said Abraham was very well organised and honest, and “he will go far in the building industry”. Third place went to Daniel Small, 23, who trained at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and is employed by Scott Construction Marlborough.

Daniel was commended by the judges for his understanding of the building code and was a “standout”, displaying strong workmanship. First place went to apprentice Jay Pope of Nelson, employed by Mudgway Construction. Supporting the competition for 15 years, principal sponsor CARTERS Chief Executive Mike Guy says it’s been fantastic to see the development of thousands of young talented apprentices throughout the years, and to see them go on to have successful careers within the building industry. “Our longstanding partnership with Apprentice of the Year reflects our commitment to supporting this growth and ensuring we are providing apprentices with the tools, mentoring and training they need to succeed,” he says.

Support for lower speed limits on local roads Three weeks into the Marlborough District Council’s review of speed limits on local roads, initial feedback suggests the majority of Marlborough submitters are in favour of lowered speed limits. The review asks Marlburians for their views on what they consider appropriate speed limits on local roads throughout the region. The review does not include speeds on State Highways, which are administered by the New Zealand Transport Agency. Nearly half of the submissions to date have been in favour of more 50kmh areas (69 submissions) followed by 30kmh areas (32 submissions). More than 160 submissions have been lodged so far, but the council is eager to receive more feedback before the review process ends on Friday, September 27. Marlborough Roads Manager, Steve Murrin, says he is pleased with the online response so far but is aware that there are others who are keen to share their

opinions. “We really encourage people to make a submission to ensure their voice is heard,” Steve says. “We know that for speed limits to be effective, they need to be underpinned by community support and understanding, and that’s why community input into this process is crucial,” he says. Old and New Renwick Roads have been popular topics, with most submissions in favour of the speed being raised for New Renwick Road, and lowered on Old Renwick Road. The majority of submissions on smaller townships such as Spring Creek, Seddon and Renwick show support for a reduction in speed limits. The review is being conducted to ensure that the speed limits on Marlborough’s local roads are safe and appropriate. The public can submit feedback on the existing speed limits by completing the online survey at: http://bit.ly/MDCSpeedLimitReview before September 27.

Dementia affects many families Helping the community to remember those who can no longer remember is one of the aims of Alzheimer’s Marlborough. Bill McElhinney talks to Alzheimer’s Marlborough manager Diane Tolley about the Society’s work. Caring for her mother introduced Diane Tolley to the world of Alzheimer’s Marlborough. Diane’s first permanent position in teaching after moving to Blenheim was at Whitney Street School, followed by a time as principal at Ward and Kaikoura Primary Schools. Following her two principalships she spent 13 years as a professional development facilitator with the Christchurch College of Education, working with teachers in schools around the Top of the South. In 2011 Diane retired and it was then that Diane’s Mum, Joan, moved from Palmerston North to live with her and husband Leon. “Mum was 91 and in the early stages of dementia, Diane says. “I became involved with Alzheimer’s Marlborough when Mum attended the Day Programme.”

“One of the challenges with dementia is getting a timely diagnosis.”

preparations for the future such as organising enduring power of attorney, a will and the like.” Most of the organisation’s funding comes from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, but Alzheimer’s Marlborough has always relied on grants and fundraising to cover additional operating costs, she says. ‘‘We’ve never been in the posi-

tion of having enough guaranteed funding. But the Marlborough community has always been hugely supportive,” Diane says. Last year the society established a foundation to look after its future capital needs, rather than having to rely solely on current funding sources. The Alzheimer’s Foundation Marlborough looks after capital

and plans fundraising activities such as a golf tournament held to raise funds for the society and the screening of the documentary on Celia Lashlie’s life’s work. The foundation is holding a fundraising dinner at the Bamboo Garden Restaurant on the 24th September with tickets available from the Alzheimer’s Centre.

After her Mum died, Diane became a volunteer, helping in the Day Centre and taking service users out biking and walking and assisting with committee fundraising. She was elected president of Alzheimer’s Marlborough in 2015 and served in this capacity for two years before becoming the manager in 2017. “It’s a wonderful organisation to work for with everyone doing their best to make life better for people affected for by dementia.” “We’re like a big family – and have a wonderful team of volunteers,” Diane says, “but we would like more.” “Volunteers are rostered on for a morning or afternoon once a fortnight, to assist staff with running the Day Programme or driving the van to

bring service users to the centre and take them home again. “You don’t need any special skills to be a volunteer, just an empathy for people living with dementia” Alzheimer’s Marlborough was formed over 30 years ago to support people in our community affected by dementia by providing day respite for people living with dementia and support for their care partners and other family members. “Our aim is to support and educate family members of a person living with dementia. This allows them to live with dignity in their own homes for as long as possible,” Diane says. Community awareness education is a role that Diane enjoys and with September being World Alzheimer’s Month she is busy organising activities to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. “Our annual Memory Walk is a time for the community to remember those who can no longer remember,” Diane says Dementia is a debilitating condition that affects many families in Marlborough. Research carried out by Alzheimer’s New Zealand shows around 70,000 Kiwis have dementia and the number is set to triple by 2050. Symptoms can include memory loss, personality changes and impaired reasoning. “We can help by raising awareness, so that people can recognise the early onset of dementia and get the support they need.” “One of the challenges with dementia is getting a timely diagnosis,” Diane says. “Receiving a diagnosis helps the person living with dementia and their families get the support they need while the person is still functioning in the community.” “It is important for families to have the time to think about how life can be made easier for all affected by the diagnosis. Memories of sunset cruises in the Sounds By Bill McElhinney A reference to a 1924 ball featuring Perrys Cabaret Orchestra in a recent Sun story about the Marlborough Colleges Old Girls’ Association brought back memories for Blenheim’s Nigel Perry. “That was my father, George Perry, who played the violin,” Nigel says. “Along with drummer Sun Gamble, Sammy Marsden on the trumpet and Queenie Wilson on piano, George was busy nearly every Saturday evening in the 1930s playing at balls and cabarets all over the Province. “And if Queenie couldn’t make it, my Mum, Gladys, would fill in on the piano.” Perrys Cabaret Orchestra also played regular Saturday night dances on the old inter-island ferry Tamahine. Although Picton residents were served by a variety of ships during the course of longer runs, the town’s first dedicated ferry was the Tamahine of 1925. Famous for her permanent list and unsettling corkscrew motion in heavy seas, the ‘Tam’ crossed Cook Strait until 1962. The passenger service connecting Wellington and Picton dates back to 1875 and was for many years operated by the famous Union Steamship Company of New Zealand Limited. The 400 passenger Tamahine was the company's last ship on the run from 1925 until her withdrawal in 1962.

Drummer Sun Gamble, trumpeter Sammy Marsden, pianist Queenie Wilson and George Perry on the violin. TOP RIGHT: Perrys Cabaret Orchestra played regular Saturday night dances on the old inter-island ferry Tamahine.

“The Tamahine would sail over from Wellington and arrive in Picton at 4pm on a Saturday,” Nigel recalls. “Passengers would then board the ship for an evening cruise into the Kenepuru. “The ship would leave Picton about 6pm, dinner would be served then Dad’s band would

strike up and people danced until the ferry returned to Picton around 1.30am. “The Tamahine would then sail again for Wellington at 6pm on Sunday.” When the Union Company announced that the Tamahine was to be withdrawn and not likely to be replaced, the government of

the time decided that the service would be taken over by the Railways Department and an order was placed for a new ship. In August 1962 the first roll-on roll-off rail and vehicle ferry, Aramoana, was put into service and the romantic evening cruises and dances on the old Tamahine faded into memory.

Memory Walk Get our your walking shoes and grab a group of friends for the Memory Walk on Saturday, September 21 in Blenheim. The Memory Walk is a national Alzheimers New Zealand federation event and is proudly held in Marlborough. The community is encouraged to take part in the walk which takes place on Saturday from 10am at the Munro Street Carpark by the Taylor River walkway, rain or shine. Register on the morning and if you like, wear your previous years’ purple Memory Walk shirt, or a purple coloured top to show your support. The walk will progress down the walkway to the Henry Street bridge, led by piper Barry Brown, across Alfred Street and through to Seymour Square. Those who cannot manage the full walk can join the walking group at Seymour Square and walk from there to the Forum. Memory Walks are a great way to raise awareness of dementia and help to dispel the stigma associated with it.

Cuppa for a Cause Be a Superhero. Make your next cuppa count and raise vital funds to support people with dementia in NZ by hosting a Cuppa for a Cause. Participants at these events make a donation in exchange for a cuppa – tea, coffee, hot chocolate, a cold drink – whatever cuppa you fancy and maybe a biscuit or home baking. Why not dress up in your purple outfit and have a purple themed tea party or it can be as simple as putting the jug on and getting the biscuits out? Retirement villages, rest homes, hospitals, businesses (large and small), schools, service organisations, and private residences are just a few examples of ideal

places to host a Cuppa for a Cause. You can organise an event, large or small, in your community, workplace or home. When you host an Alzheimers Cuppa for a Cause, you help raise much-needed funds for local programmes and services for people with a dementia and their whanau/family and carers. You directly assist our mission of: A dementia friendly New Zealand/Aotearoa, he aro nui kit e hunga wareware. Sign up to be a Dementia Friend Imagine how you would feel facing the challenges presented by dementia every single day. Then imagine that wonderful feeling of having a support network around you that extends much further than your home, but also throughout the community. This is what becoming a Dementia Friend can provide to those in our community who live with dementia. A Dementia Friend is someone who learns about what it is like to live with dementia, and also makes a commitment to action that will help people with dementia to live well. Anyone can become a Dementia Friend – will you? By becoming a Dementia

Friend you are joining a growing community of people helping to make NZ a kinder, more supportive, inclusive and understanding place for people living with dementia. W hat does a Dementia Friend do? A Dementia Friend commits to take an action with or for someone or people living with dementia. Even very small actions can make a big difference – no action is too small or too big. Support can take the shape of something simple like wearing the Dementia Friends badge or bracelet, dropping by for a cuppa with someone living with dementia, helping them cook a meal, taking a walk with them, or helping with the weekly

grocery shop. Dementia Friends choose the action or actions they are comfortable with and able to offer. The programme helps ordinary Kiwis understand and feel more confident to support someone or people living with dementia through becoming Dementia Friends. It is a social movement designed to increase the size of the community committed to supporting Kiwis with dementia to live the lives they want to. A bigger action might be giving up a couple of hours a week to help someone you know with dementia or to volunteer for your local organisation. Supporting young people By Louisa Woods Adolescence is a time of upheaval. Even for the most steady of our young people, there is extensive development and change happening in all areas of their lives--bodies, values, learning processes, thinking processes, relationships. It is almost inevitable they will need some form of support as they negotiate this time of change, whether that be from someone at home, or a mental health professional. Most teenagers want what

most adults want; to be heard, treated with respect and compassion, and to be made to feel they are worthy of connection and support. Two common things that stop teenagers reaching out are fear of being judged or misunderstood, and worry that their problems are nothing compared to other people’s, and not worth bothering anyone with. It can be challenging to see where young people are coming from, and to take their issues seriously

and not brush them aside. It is so important to recognise that regardless the seriousness of the problem according to our standards, it is very real and significant for them. If they are sufficiently worried to need to talk about it, then we need to respond with compassion and respect. By doing this we create a safe space for our young people, and this can help protect their wellbeing. Louisa Woods is a guidance counsellor at Marlborough Girls' College. PBA

Motocross ride in memory of teen By Celeste Alexander The memory of fun-loving teenager, George Holland, will be remembered in a way that he himself would have loved – with a memorial motocross ride this weekend. George tragically passed away in 2017 at the age of 19, but his memory remains strong with those who knew him, so last year one of his friends, Mitch Parnwell, came up with the idea to hold a George Holland Memorial ride. Mitch’s father, Chris Parnwell is the Marlborough Motorcycle Club’s president and helped to establish the ride. Now in its second year, the motorcross event

is looking to be even bigger than the first. Last year saw 129 riders participate, but Chris has confirmed that this year there are around 152 registered. “We have riders of all ages taking part, right from the minis through to the seniors,” he says. A minute silence will be held in George’s honour before the race action begins. There are two feature races, one for the junior riders and one for seniors. In the senior race there’s $1000 up for grabs back to 5th place and in the juniors $500 back to fifth place. “The club has put up the prize money and we’re look-

ing forward to seeing who takes out the top spots,” Chris says. The club is encouraging the public to support the event by going along to watch the race action. “This is a memorial race for a young rider we tragically lost so the more support the better. “Entry is free for the public and there will be food and coffee carts onsite. We hope to see you there,” Chris says. T he G eorge Hol la nd Memorial takes place this Saturday and Sunday at the Huddlestons Property, 525 Avondale Road, Waihopai Valley, off State Highway 63. Racing both days at 10am – 4pm.

Bamboo Garden Just when you thought takeaway meals were quick and convenient, local restaurant owner Bu-nga Krataitong has taken it one step further by introducing an online ordering system for her restaurants Bamboo Garden and The Lemongrass. Bu-nga says she is always “looking to the future” when it comes to the technology she uses, and online ordering was the next step forward. “This is a new system for us and we are welcoming feedback, but so far it’s been positive and I hope our customers find it to be an easier option for ordering their takeaway,” she says.

How it works; simply visit the restaurants’ websites and along the top there is a tab ‘Order Online’. Click and scroll through the menu, selecting the dishes you wish to order along the way. Once complete go to the shopping cart and complete the order. It’s that simple! The order is then accepted by the restaurant chefs and they quickly get to work on preparing the order. “Of course you can still phone or call in to order, but with the online ordering it can speed up the process,” Bu-nga says. Bamboo Garden Restaurant is now also offering

regular chef specials, giving diners the opportunity to try new and exciting dishes. From classic Chinese to Thai and Japanese dishes, Bamboo Garden Restaurant embraces the richness and diversity of Asian cuisine. With their top chefs from all over Asia and a commitment to using the highest quality and freshest of ingredients, the menu is sure to deliver new and exciting tastes to your palate. It’s also the perfect location to host fundraising dinners. Book a table by phoning or going online and order from Bamboo Garden Restaurant and The Lemongrass.

Mad Hatter’s tea party By Celeste Alexander Last Friday saw a ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ held at Springlands Lifestyle Village and while there wasn’t a talking hare or mouse, there were big smiles and colourful hats worn by those attending. Springlands School Year 5/6 students from room 19 visit the residents every fortnight and enjoy a range of activities. Last Friday it included hats and iced biscuits. The students had created a variety of hats which were tall, short, flat and even had coloured ribbon hanging from them. Residents took part in the fun by wearing their own hats with fake flowers, lace and plenty of colour. Teacher Leanne Guyton says the regular visits are something the students and residents look forward.

Springtime is your time Flowers are blooming and so should you be! With colour and a tinge of warmth in the air, it’s a great time to be looking at our health and wellness. Are you looking to make some changes and springclean your health? Here are some tips you might enjoy. Spring into a healthy diet If you have over-indulged in winter comfort foods, try replacing the heavy meals for more fresh fruits and vegetables. You can naturally eliminate toxins and refresh your body with all of the great nutrients your body needs to be in top shape. Grow new exercise habits Does your body need a jumpstart? Now the days are getting warmer try in-

troducing a lunchtime walk or even an early morning swim. The days will start feeling longer with more daylight soon so it’s a great time to enjoy an after-work bike ride with the family or family dog. Try something different for a week and awaken new muscles and you might even discover a new activity that you enjoy. Blossom in the beautiful outdoors Venturing out into the outdoors can be invigorating for your physical and mental wellbeing. Not only can it increase your attention span and brain activity, but it can help to give you that positive boost that you might have been lacking during winter. Recharge your batteries

with fresh air, sunshine and natural surroundings. Sprout a more positive mindset Negative thoughts are not only draining, but they can be demoralising too. If you recognise that you are having one or more throughout the day, you can consciously choose to change it. Change your thinking from “I can’t” to “I can”, and see how you feel at the end of it. The bottom line How and when you choose to come out of the winter-funk in the springtime is largely in your control—and that’s a great feeling! Like a shy crocus peeking out from under the snow, being proactive takes courage, but the benefits are pure sunshine.

Women take the helm for popular yachting regatta Sailors from all around New Zealand, and some from Australia, will be heading to Waikawa this weekend for the popular Waikawa Boating Club’s Women’s Regatta. “Mud House Wines have signed on for the third successive year as lead sponsor of the regatta,” club development officer, Duncan Mackenzie, says. “From modest beginnings as a ‘women’s helm’ event the regatta has made huge strides and with boat entries over 50 percent ahead of the 2018 regatta the organisers are looking forward to a standout event.” The regatta has drawn boats and women from all over the country and a contingent of Australian sailors as well. While not a ‘pure’ women’s regatta in that there are males aboard some boats, these individuals are there simply as boat owners to ensure they are covered by their insurers. “A number of boats feature a 100 per cent female line-up and in terms of actual numbers of women sailors the event is set to be the biggest women’s keelboat event in the country,” Duncan says. “The competition just heated up some more with the entry of current national women’s keelboat champion Sally Garrett of Royal Akarana Yacht Club.
