Youngsters turn out in force to highlight climate change By Bill McElhinney Hundreds of Marlborough youngsters joined thousands nationwide on Friday in leaving school to protest at inaction on climate change. Friday’s action in the name of climate change is believed to have attracted 170,000 people nationwide, according to strike organisers. Images of placard-wielding hordes filled social media throughout the day, as children and adults

alike gathered to demand change and action to mitigate the effects of climate change. School Strike 4 Climate New Zealand spokesperson, Sophie Handford, said the strike wouldn’t be the last as climate activists in New Zealand and around the world were committed to the cause. In Blenheim the young protesters gathered in Seymour Square, opposite the Marlborough District

Council building. Marlborough Mayor John Leggett addressed the crowd and assured them their voices were being heard. He also assured them many of a recent list of demands the youngsters submitted to the council, including increasing recycling, encouraging hospitality business to reduce their waste and more bike lanes, were being incorporated in

the District Plan. The youngsters were also praised and encouraged by Climate Karanga Marlborough member Budyong Hill and former Green Party MP Steffan Browning. The young activists encouraged the wider public and businesses to turn up and support the cause, and many did. Some businesses also closed so their staff could support the protest.

Measles? Phone first! The last case of measles in Marlborough was in November 2018, and since then the Nelson Marlborough region continue to hold onto their measles-free status. The total of notifications of suspect cases in 2019 so far is 38. Health officials are urging anyone who thinks they have measles symptoms to phone first before visiting their GP, so they don’t bring measles symptoms into a clinic waiting room. The Public Health Service needs to know of all suspect cases via GPs, so it’s important to phone first. Yvonne Brown and Maureen Joyce with Christmas Child boxes at the Blenheim Wesley Centre. The teddies to be included in some of the boxes were knitted by a parishioner.

The boxes will be available to collect from the Blenheim Sun office in High Street, and can be brought back to The Sun office when they are filled. The boxes are also available from the Star of the Sea Catholic Parish office in Maxwell Road. A number of local churches have also joined

in and are asking their parishioners to fill the boxes. “Kids, get cracking and make Christmas special for some youngster,” Ginetta says. “And we’d like the boxes filled and returned before Labour Weekend, by October 25, so they can be shipped away on time.”

Taylor Pass Honey Co is celebrating Bee Aware Month 2019 with a morning of fun bee and honey related activities at The Vines Village Cafe & Deli, Wine Cellar & Boutique Stores this Friday from 10am. There will be honey tastings and a working demonstration of a beehive management around the village lake. Admission is free and kids can make beeswax wraps by booking with the Quilters Barn, $20 per session. Authorised by John Leggett, 29 Percy Street, Blenheim

By Bill McElhinney “This would make a great school holiday activity for your youngsters,” Star of the Sea Catholic Parish office manager Ginetta Petersen says. Ginetta is promoting Operation Christmas Child, organised by Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian non-profit organisation that collects small gifts for impoverished and disadvantaged children, many of who have never received a gift. The gifts are packed in special boxes which are then sent to children in places such as Fiji, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and countries in Southeast Asia, such as Thailand and Vietnam. “Many of these kids have never received a new gift until they open their Christmas Child presents,” Ginetta says. “It’s easy to do, its fun, and it makes a big difference to the children who receive it. “We suggest you pack your box with items like school supplies; games and small (safe) toys; wearable items like shirts, shoes and hats; personal hygiene stuffs such as soap and face cloths, combs and shampoo; and ‘something to love,’ like a teddy bear.,” Ginetta says. “We believe the shoebox is a tangible expression of love, and is often a life-changing experience for those that receive them.” The boxes come with instructions about how to pack them and what not to include. They are labelled for boys or girls, and there are three age groups to choose from. Last year thousands of boxes were collected in New Zealand, 400 of them in Marlborough. “We also ask for a $10 donation with each box to cover the cost of shipping them to the various countries,” Ginetta says. “You can do this online or place it in a clearly marked envelope and put it inside your box. “If you fill out your box’s age and gender label online, and pay the delivery donation, you can also follow the box’s progress and find out who it goes to.”

Daffodil Day proceeds for cancer

Blood pressure testing this Saturday This October marks the Stroke Foundation of New Zealand’s Big Blood Pressure Check, giving people the chance to get their blood pressure checked for free at participating sites across the country. In its 11th year, the Stroke Foundation is calling on Marlburians to go along to PAK’nSAVE Blenheim where one of the Big Blood Pressure Check testing stations will be set up this coming Saturday. One in five New Zealanders has high blood pressure but about a third of these people don’t know it. Redwood Lotto sells 10th First Division ticket Continued from page 1. When the Sun visited the shop on Monday the shop was buzzing with locals who were all talking about the win and getting their tickets for Wednesday’s draw. “We are super excited to hear that our shop had again sold a First Division ticket for Saturday’s draw,” Claire says. “The person who won is a local who has been coming to the store for a very long time. They are very deserving.” The Blenheim winner was one of three Lotto players who won the First Division, including from Hawkes Bay and

Christchurch. Because the Powerball was not struck during Saturday’s draw it has rolled to Wednesday where the jackpot will be $22 million. Peter and Claire have owned the Redwood Lotto Shop since 1997, which is a longstanding business in Redwoodtown since 1987. Over $23 million worth of prizes have been won there. The business sells a range of magazines and cards as well as having the Lotto franchise which Peter and Claire say has a strong following of regular customers. Claire Matthews.

Blenheim rolls out welcome mat for dogs and their owners By Bill McElhinney Hundreds of dogs, hundreds of visitors – the Black Hawk National Dog Show began in Blenheim today. A bylaw preventing dogs from entering the CBD has been lifted for the month of October, and many Blenheim businesses have put up stickers welcoming the dogs and their owners. Some have even put out dog bowls and treats. “We’ve had fantastic support from the Marlborough District Council and the local businesses,” one of the local organisers, Pauline Gregory, says. “This is the first time the show has been held outside of a main centre, so we’re thrilled to have it here in Blenheim.” Over 1200 dogs of all shapes and sizes will be shown and put through their paces, some in obedience tests, some in agility tests, and some just strutting their stuff before the judges. The show runs from today to Saturday and the public are welcome to visit the various venues. Tickets are required for some events, and these are available at Ticketek. Issues like climate change, the bypass, infrastructure for affordable housing, rates, aquaculture, cemetery fees, freedom camping, heritage… there is a long list that needs action now. Not more of the same old, same old. With nine years’ experience across every facet of council, I believe now is the time for decisive action. We have a growing population of seniors on fixed incomes - the current rating model is not sustainable. With larger ferries on the horizon, the amount of heavy traffic demands we

They seem to be in reasonable nick, and they are very feisty and bitey. “We do need to get them back up to a healthy weight so they can survive in the wild. The chick has a reasonable coating of down, but there are patches where the down has obviously been worn off after being trapped in the drain, John says. EcoWorld Aquarium works with Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary where the little blues, once back to full health, will be released back into the wild. Penguins move to places where it is hard for predators to get at them, but sometimes they get stuck, John says. It is penguin breeding season and more injured and sick little penguins are expected at EcoWorld. If you find a sick or injured penguin please contact EcoWorld Aquarium or your local DOC office for advice. And take care: little penguins are wild animals and they do bite.

EcoWorld’s trainee vet nurse, Celine Moshiem, checks out the little baby penguin that was rescued in Picton.

Forrest bows out, now it’s the Whitehaven Graperide By Bill McElhinney A bike tour through part of France sowed the seed for what was to become an iconic Marlborough sporting event. Marlborough wine pioneers John and Brigid Forrest took a cycle tour in France years ago, and when they returned to Marlborough they decided to continue recreational cycling. “We were out one day cycling along the river bank and enjoying the scenery, when we thought: ‘This is as beautiful as what we’ve just spent a lot of money on!’” John says. Event founder Pete Halligan and event director Duncan Mackenzie grabbed the idea and with the support of Forrest Wines, the Graperide was launched. “I still remember the first one in 2005,” Duncan says. “We had 698 riders. Now we’re building the event up again to what it was before the coastal highway closed, and we’re hoping to have a field of more than 2000.” The Graperide has also become an international event, attracting top riders from around the world. Now, after 15 years, John and Brigid are handing the event over to another family owned

Marlborough business, Whitehaven Wines. “Our staff and family have grown up with the Graperide as part of their lives, and I’ve even done the ride a couple of times,” John says. “But now we’re thrilled to be passing the baton to our close neighbours, Whitehaven, who are equally focused on community and sustainability.” “Being a family owned and operated business means creating positive impacts on our community is important to us,” Whitehaven founder and managing director, Sue White, says. “While we want to retain the core of what has made the Graperide such a renowned event, we look forward to adding our unique stamp to it.” “From the beginning we’ve had a focus on rider experience and Whitehaven have the same focus,” Duncan says. “I’m sure that together we’ll be adding to the enjoyment and memories riders take away.” As well as changing the naming sponsor, the Graperide will start and finish at the Vines Village on Rapaura Road. “And the distance will be the same,” Duncan says. “We’re looking forward to adding our special touches to

Fish and Game - Hypocrisy Dear Ed, The Marlborough Tramping Club have just completed another sweep of the lower Cave Stream valley floor, the fourth in 10 years, and with every sweep there are increasing numbers of wilding pines, 2000 odd with this last sweep up the valley floor. Again Fish and Game have recently been very vocal with regard to the nitrification of waterways, probably because farmers are an easy target, but Fish and Game have been deafeningly silent when it comes to lobbying Central Government to clean up the mess Central Government created with the Crown Legacy Plantings of the 60s,70s and 80s. I presume there inaction is due to not wanting to cut off the hand that feeds them! These Crown Legacy plantings

and the resultant wilding spread, if not addressed now, will destroy the freshwater ecosystems through acute acidification and a worst case scenario of an 80 per cent loss in water yield over all the South Marlborough river systems. That will result in there being no fishery at all, while not forgetting a total loss in all indigenous biodiversity as nothing grows under a wilding pine. Come on Fish and Game, get behind the South Marlborough Restoration Trust and community groups such as the Marlborough Tramping Club and actively lobby Central Government to mitigate this folly before it’s too late. committee in 2007 which rejected a bypass need and put the cost at $200 million. So MDC is involved. That $200 million was because the committee, in its dubious wisdom, had the bypass starting near Spring Creek. However a truck bypass starting near the northern approach to the Grove Bridge, i.e. Rowley Crescent from a roundabout and cutting through east to St Andrews/ Riverlands would cost probably within $35 million. With expert help (roading engineer/ real estate) I costed a ball park figure at about $32 million.

That was published in an opinion piece. A retired roading engineer contacted me after reading the article and he estimated the cost about the same. Surely the Mayor read the published opinion piece? To quote the $200 million figure is, to my mind, a misrepresentation of the reality and the best option. Besides a roundabout at Rowley Crescent would slow traffic approaching the Grove Road bridge as it enters the 50kmhour zone, surely a win-win outcome? Tony Orman Blenheim

Daylight saving timing Dear Ed, Last weekend we again turned our clocks forward one hour in preparation for summer, but why so early? It makes no logical sense to do this before the end of October. Why? Well firstly the e a r t h ha s not rot at e d enough for NZ to be able to compensate for this hour and hence, for us in the middle of the island, most will go to work in the dark again. Bypass costings ? Dear Ed, I was disappointed at the Renwick mayoral/candidate meeting to hear Mayor John Leggett’s response to a question about the need for a truck bypass. While Jamie Arbuckle and Rick Ireland wanted progress towards a truck bypass, the mayor was indecisive. His response, which I scribbled down, went something like this - “It’s yes and no.” (Is that strong leadership?) “The state highway is not council responsibility. It’ll cost $200 million.” Well that needs correcting. It may be state highway but council was part of the

The two former Scots had both been in demanding, high-powered jobs before deciding to move. Fiona had worked in public relations for major global companies such as Procter & Gamble, ICI and BP. Martin was the United Kingdom chief of staff for British Petroleum. They had visited New Zealand before and decided they wanted to move to give their family a better quality of life. “There was a lot of pressure in the UK, especially on the kids, and we lived a lot of our life indoors.”

Loving Blenheim, loving Marlborough. Fiona Fenwick is passionate about putting her adopted home town on the map.

Fiona had also been managing communications in sports, including English Premiership Football, before founding her own company in 1992. “But I found I was working too much on the business, not in the business,” Fiona says. “I wanted to be interacting with people, so I decided change was needed.” The couple moved to Auckland and a year later Fiona sold her business. “But I got bored,” she says. “So in 2002 I set up an on-line company, at a time when there were very few such companies. “I started selling party wares on-line after finding I couldn’t get what I wanted for my girls’ birthdays. “But after a while I discovered it wasn’t really what I wanted to do. I wanted to have relationships with my clients.” So she decided to step out again and formed her own company. “But I didn’t know anybody and

I didn’t have any clients, so I made a list: ‘Who needs to know Fiona,’ and I just started cold-calling.” Fiona soon built up a network and began working with leaders in the corporate world and also working alongside many New Zealand and International sporting organisations, providing reputation and personal brand support. She created fifteenminutes, inspired by American artist Andy Warhol’s words “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” “It’s focused on building your reputation,” Fiona says. “Your reputation encompasses everything you do. You can’t buy a personal brand or reputation and you can’t demand one – it’s earned – for better or worse! “If you want to be successful, you have to invest in your reputation.” Although they enjoyed life in Auckland, Fiona and Martin had always been drawn to Marlbor-

ough having visited several times a year since moving to New Zealand in 2001. In 2015 they sold up in Auckland and made the move. “We landed in Christchurch, hired a campervan and drove to Marlborough with the intention of finding a small property that we could easily lock up when we wanted to travel away for business,” Fiona says. But the plans for an easy-care lock up went out the window when an agent showed them a Brancott Road vineyard. “We came in search of the good life and we found it right here, our 30-year old vineyard and farm, spread over nine hectares in the Brancott Valley.” Their Marlborough home, The Quarters, was planted in pinot noir and the grapes from their organic vineyard are made into wine by winemaker Hätsch Kalberer and the team at FROMM Winery. “The vineyard was a steep learning curve,” Fiona says with

a grin, “but we’ve loved learning about Nature, seeing how the grapes grow and how they are transformed into wine. “It’s given us a whole new appreciation of the business and the hard-working people behind it!” Fiona is the public face of the popular Great Burleigh Pie Pairing Challenge. Devised in the depths of winter by Fiona and a group of friends over a drink, the challenge involves sourcing pies from popular Blenheim dairy The Burleigh and matching them with a Marlborough wine. The event has been going now for three years, and attracts more entries every year. “Its fun, and having fun is a part of what Marlborough is all about.” Fiona says. “I’m a passionate Kiwi and a passionate Marlburian by choice. “We made the decision to move to New Zealand and to come to Marlborough and we’ve never looked back!”

Celebrating 100 Years! – Servicing the Sounds since 1919 –

Family’s 100 year legacy celebrated In the 1880s a man named George S. Johnson sailed into the Pelorus Sound on the schooner ‘Prince Alfred’. He married a woman named Alice Schenkle, who happened to be the Captain’s daughter, and by the 1890s the family had settled into farming in the area. Of their six children, son Eric Johnson went on to build a legacy with a commercial launch business which today, is celebrating an

incredible 100 year milestone. What began with the launching of the Mahau, built by Eric in Mahau Sound on June 18, 1919, has since grown to be a well-established and iconic company which is now owned and operated by Eric’s grandson, Peter Johnson, and his wife Jennie. It is not only a time of celebration for the business, but also a time to reflect back on the hard work

and dedication of family members before them who have over the past century, helped to shape Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd into what it is today. “We are absolutely stoked to be celebrating 100 years of the Johnson family business in the Pelorus Sound. “There have been so many family members before us, working extremely hard and making sacrifices

to keep the business going and we feel truly privileged to have been able to play a part in that heritage,” Peter and Jennie say. To celebrate 100 years of Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd, Peter and Jennie have put together a pictorial booklet with a summary of the family history, featuring vessels from 1919 to 2019. This is made up of photos from the family’s collections and it has

been beautifully designed by Rick Edmonds. The family, employees and supporters of Johnsons’ Barge Service also came together at the weekend to mark the occasion. Those who attended also received a copy of the book and there will be further copies available for purchase at Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd in Havelock, located at the south end of the marina.

A business rich in history There’s barely a day when Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd is not busy. Based in Havelock, it’s owned and operated by Peter and Jennie Johnson who are the third generation to continue on the Johnson family business. It was Peter’s grandfather Eric who first established the business in 1919 with the launch of the Mahau. It was constructed from white pine from Brownlee’s mill at Blackball, just outside of Havelock. In the 1920s Eric purchased other launches such as the ‘Mahoe’ (previously named Minaroo), ‘La Rola’, ‘Alma’, ‘Iris’ and the first barge. By 1924 Eric had the mail contract for the inner Sounds mail run which he went on to run for the next 50 years. Eric married his wife Dorothy MacDonald in 1925 and the launch business became firmly established in Havelock. In the years that followed the couple grew the business and their family. Eric later went on to name the business Eric Johnson and Sons Ltd to include his sons Allan, Sonny and Kerry, and daughter Dorothy. Eric built several boats and continued to expand his fleet with five

boats and one barge, providing different services in the Sounds and D’Urville Island area. In the early 1970s some of the boats were sold along with the mail contract, while other parts of the business were retained by family members with Allan taking over the barging side of the operation. Allan, his wife Val and son Peter then formed Johnson’s

Barge Service Ltd in the mid1970s. Peter and his wife Jennie continue this proud tradition today with their freighting, logging, salvage and mooring installation services. Their two sons Stuart and Ashley have also played a part in the continuation of Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd. “Ashley worked for us on the

vessels in the past for around four years, but is now following his passion in the honey industry as a bee keeper for Taylor Pass Honey Company. Stuart is an engineer after doing his apprenticeship at Cuddon Ltd, and returned to Marlborough from Christchurch over three years ago to work for us and help maintain the vessels,” Peter and Jennie say.

Celebrating 100 Years! – Servicing the Sounds since 1919 –

The Johnson's Barge Service Ltd team, pictured at the recent 100 year celebrations. Photo by Graham Brooks.

Privileged to have great staff Not every business can boast of being a family operation spanning over 100 years, but for Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd it’s something they take huge pride in. Not only are there strong family connections with Peter and Jennie Johnson being the third generation, but the team they’ve built is also based on years of loyalty and service. This year is also a celebration of special milestones for two of their employees; Adrian Weatherhead

and Gordon Sargeant (Sarge). Adrian first joined Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd as a deckhand before progressing on to become a skipper. Today, he’s now the Operations Manager and has just clocked up 10 years with the business. Adrian was born in the UK but came to New Zealand at a young age and was working locally in the Sounds before being employed by Peter and Jennie. His wife Kim is also part of the team

after joining in 2010, and is now the Office Manager. While one decade of service is impressive, so is two decades which will be reached this coming December by Gordon Sargeant, skipper of the Pukatea. Gordon (Sarge) has been at the helm of the Pukatea since it was first launched in March 2000. “Both Adrian and Sarge are extremely capable and highly experienced men and we are very grateful to have them on

Proud to supply fuel & lubricants to Johnson's Barge Service. Congratulations on your 100 year anniversary.

our team. “Our team as a whole plays such an important part in the day-today running of our business and we are so lucky to have them part of our journey. From the newest employees of only a few months, to the longest serving members of 10 and 20 years, everyone is totally dependable and makes a positive contribution to the business – we can’t thank them enough,” Peter and Jennie say.

Partnered with life-saving air service Peter and Jennie Johnson are big supporters of the Havelock, and wider Marlborough communities. Where they can, they support local charities and organisations, including their sponsorship of the Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival each year.

This year they have donated to the Pelorus Pre-School and also the Graeme Dingle Foundation to support the organisation’s youth programme in Marlborough Schools. “We don’t have masses of spare cash to dish out, but we like to do what we can,” they say.

One other charity they also support is the Life Flight Trust. Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd has long supported the Life Flight Trust’s helicopter and air ambulance services with annual donations. But in the last three years Peter and Jennie decided to make a larger contribution

by becoming a partner to the charity. “We feel that the service is an essential one and you never know when one of our own people may need urgent assistance when out in the Sounds or around D’Urville Island, so it’s a kind of insurance policy,” they say.

Celebrating 100 Years! – Servicing the Sounds since 1919 –

We are specialists – no job too big or small Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd is located at the south-end of the Havelock Marina. The team specialises in freighting, salvage, mooring installation and service to the Pelorus Sound, D’Urville Island and Nelson areas. With their fleet – motorised barges Pukatea, Mahoe and Titoki, tow vessel Tawhai and dumb barge Hinau, Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd can carry everything from salmon, both live smolt and harvested fish, to building materials, farm stock, machinery, logs, fuel and so much more. Another vessel, ‘Manatu’ is due to be added to the fleet by the end of this year. What’s more, if it’s mooring installation and service you require, the team are specialists in this field and are your first point of call. “No job is too big or too small. With our great team of experienced staff, and Peter’s extensive expertise, you can count on us for good advice, good planning and a job well done – all at a fair price,” Peter and Jennie Johnson say. More about what we do: Mooring Services Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd offers a full mooring installation, audit, maintenance and repair service for swing moorings in the

Marlborough Sounds, D’Urville Island, Croiselles Harbour and Nelson areas. We have been building this service for over 20 years and now have over 1200 moorings on our list and can offer advice to those applying for new consents or for existing consent renewals. When servicing moorings, we lift the whole mooring out of the water to allow us to measure all components, (chain, shackles, swivels etc) for wear. Components must be replaced when they have worn by 20% from their original size. We clean the whole length of rope of any mussel and weed growth, scrub the float and rename and number it with the owners name and registration number. All components are recorded and the wear is recorded at each subsequent service. If any repairs are required we are able to do them on the spot as we carry all chains, ropes, shackles, swivels, floats etc with us, along with gas cutting and welding equipment. All shackle pins are welded in place. We use locally made mooring blocks, the design of which has been engineer certified, and Graeme Smith of Town and Country

Steel landing craft vessel Mahoe.

Builders has been making concrete blocks for moorings and the mussel industry for over 30 years – that’s almost 9,000 blocks!! Moorings are required to be lifted and serviced every two years but often become very heavily fouled with weed and mussel growth well before their service is due. We now offer a “Float and Rope” cleanonly around the 12 month mark in between the biennial service. This

can help keep your mooring floating by removing the weight of growth from the rope and can help prevent lost moorings, which then require the additional cost of a diving service to locate them. We also operate a system for our mooring clients where we send out a ‘courtesy reminder of service due’ when your mooring requires its biennial service inspection. All new builds and repairs are

carried out in accordance with the Marlborough District Council’s minimum construction guidelines. We also issue a Mooring Inspection Record for your files, and a copy of this is sent directly to the MDC so they know that your mooring has been serviced. We are happy to try and answer any queries or questions you may have so please feel free to contact Kim and Ayla in the office at any time.

Tasman Forest Management Ltd is proud to be associated with Johnson's Barge Services and have worked in partnership with them to find solutions for logging in the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds since 2002.

Lego holiday fun

Nelson Arts Festival comes to Blenheim Nelson Arts Festival is bringing two shows to ASB Theatre Marlborough – brand new theatre with Mr Red Light, and highskill physical circus with The WonderWombs. Mr Red Light has just premiered in Auckland to rave reviews. If you like your comedy fast-paced, wickedly dark and completely bizarre, then this new production will have you laughing out loud. The story revolves abound the antics of a failed bank robber (aptly named Mr Red Light, because he gets stopped at every opportunity) and his three hapless hostages, all bailed up in a pie shop. To pass the time, the four of them play a game of “getting to know you” with some surprising and hilarious revelations. And

to further frustrate the situation, they have to contend with the world’s worst police negotiator (as well as an ant, an Italian soldier and a skeleton, amongst other inexplicable characters). With a stellar cast, Mr Red Light comes from the twisted wit of writer Carl Bland and Blenheim regular director Ben Crowder, and is quickly staking it claim as the must-see show of 2019. Pick up a free programme from ASB Theatre Marlborough, and Blenheim and Picton i-SITEs. Tickets to Mr Red Light can be purchased from ASB Theatre Marlborough. By Celeste Alexander What better way to kick off the school holidays than by hosting a large crowd of children and giving them thousands of pieces of Lego to play with. The Clubs of Marlborough hosted the annual Lego building competition on Tuesday which was a huge hit with kids of all ages. The event is organised by the Farmers Department store. A spokesperson says it’s been running in Blenheim for around five years and all the Lego pieces are sent down from Auckland. Farmers then donates Lego products as prizes. Over 80 kids lined the tables covered in Lego and were tasked with the challenge of building either a balloon/rubber band powered vehicle, or something inspired by one of the Lego movies. Local man James McCallum was on hand to help the kids and judge the final entries. This was his second time judging the event. “I’m looking at the design, shape and scale to the object they’re building when I’m judging. I enjoy coming to this event and like to help out where I can,” he says.

2019 Local elections Candidates standing for MDC

MEG Martin

Mark Peters

My family and I made Blenheim home ten years ago and it’s where we intend to stay. I have worked in the community sector for 8 of the last 10 years whilst also studying and raising my three teenage children. I love this amazingly beautiful corner of New Zealand and want to see it thrive. I will work to further engagement with our wonderful young people, to support their needs and goals so that they will see this region as we do – a great place to live, learn, work, play, and grow.

I am keen to see our community groups supported and strengthened, and the incredible diversity of our region embraced and encouraged. I seek to ensure that the Council’s plan to minimise & manage our waste is put into practice along with the plans for roads, water treatment, and sewerage systems. If you give me your vote, as one of your Councillors, I promise to be a fresh and positive voice for the people of Marlborough, working hard to ensure transparency & prudent management of Council resources.

My grandparents came to Blenheim in the 1890’s, my wife and I were both born here and this has always remained our family’s home town. I am very passionate about Marlborough and have enjoyed my one term on Council. I have been Chair of the Annual and Long Term Plan Committees. My many years experience as a Chartered Accountant and various Financial Governance roles in Business, Sports, Church and Service Clubs, have given me a good background for contributing to Council. Over a long career in Chartered Accountancy I have served on many Company boards including terms as finance director of

both New Zealand Rugby and Highlanders Rugby Boards. I believe strongly in best practice financial governance and cannot abide waste or unnecessary expenditure. Around Board or Council tables I believe in solid debate and then collective responsibility once democratic decisions are reached. I want to ensure Council funds are used wisely and rates are levied fairly. I know how important our people, facilities and environment are to keep Marlborough a great place to live, work and play. If we don’t look after our precious environment well and serve the needs of all people in Marlborough we are letting our community down.

Peter Chapman #1 for Council Promising nil rates rises is at best misleading and at worst untruthful. I am NOT going to promise what I cannot deliver. I’m only one vote. It’s a democracy. My theme is simple: - “Common Sense and Core Business” Common sense is not a bus shelter with a hole in the roof, it is not cycleway curbing on Eltham Rd, it is not “sharrows” on Beaver Rd encouraging small kids to share the road with cars and it is not planning to build a pyrolysis plant adjacent to a residential area. The list is long….

Core business is providing clean drinking water, stormwater, sewerage and refuse collection. It’s about parks & reserves, footpaths and roads. It’s about providing facilities for the disabled and elderly. Our problem is not rising rates. It is the lack of population growth over which to spread the load. No-ones been honest enough to tell you that. The figures are available to all candidates in the Councils Pre Election Report. It is common sense!

Vote

Peter Chapman #1 for council “Common sense and core business”

Age 40, happily married to Jamie, with four children. I am passionate about our community, what it stands for and where we are heading in the future. I want to see our community grow and be a region we can all be proud of. Marlborough is a special place with so many opportunities. Developing issues in our ward are, condition of our roads, drinking water quality and the need for water storage to help in drought conditions. I want to work for you with Council to resolve these. I am eager to see the Small Townships Programme continue and

grow so we all prosper. I was disappointed by Councils decision to increase Cemetery fees and charges. Burial and Ashes beam plots have more than doubled in cost. In the Ward Cemetery the increase was $1939 dollars per burial plot. We need better consultation on important issues. Marlborough is my home and I live in Renwick and I’m raising my children in this great environment and community. I am approachable and a great listener, I will take constituents issues back to Council. I would appreciate your support to be your voice on council.
