Red rose day

By Bill McElhinney Red Cross teams and volunteers are visible in emergencies, such as the Nelson fires earlier this year, or the aftermath of the November 2016 earthquakes, but there’s also a lot of volunteer work done in the community every day. Forty local volunteers deliver the popular Meals on Wheels

service five days a week, 500 meals a month. It is one of the longest standing and most recognised Red Cross community programmes, and one that is much appreciated by its recipients, Red Cross Marlborough branch past president, Lynette Jones, says. Continued on Page 2.

Marlborough Red Cross members Moira Conroy and Gretchen Bristed hope people will support Red Cross Rose Day next Thursday.

Rose sales help local Red Cross Continued from page 1. “We’re more than just a carrier of hot meals; we deliver independence to many elderly and disabled people and those recovering from illness or hospital treatment.” In the aftermath of the 2016 earthquakes, which badly affected many East Coast residents, Marlborough Red Cross staff and volunteers responded with first aid, financial assistance and counselling. The Red Cross branch also supported the communities of Seddon and Ward with Red Cross barbecues at events through 2018. Other volunteers visit elderly residents in rest homes who may not have friends or family nearby. Some of these volunteers have been doing this for up to 10 years, and they form a relationship with residents, take them on outings, read to them, and spend time with them. Red Cross volunteers are also involved in the Community Gardens,

where the produce grown is donated to the Marlborough Community Foodbank and to John’s Kitchen. “Our van drivers transport dozens of people to all sorts of events every week,” transport coordinator, Moira Conroy, says. “ “We take people out from rest homes, and we’re looking at providing transport for Hospice Marlborough patients who may want to go out, we pick up the Stroke Group folk and other senior citizens.” Red Cross volunteers are now gearing up for their major annual fundraiser, Red Rose Day, on Thursday next week, October 17. “We will have 2500 roses to sell,” Lynette says. “Many businesses have brightened their offices with a vase of red roses. “By buying the roses you are helping those in need in our local community. The funds raised from the rose sales go towards our local projects.”

Red Cross teams are often among the first responders in emergency situations.

The roses will be on sale at sites around Blenheim, Picton and Renwick, in the Blenheim CBD and at Westwood Pak n Save. Between 70-80 volunteers have offered to help

with sales on the day. “If you see a Red Cross volunteer selling roses, please buy one, two or more, and know that you’ll be helping your community,” Lynette says.

Are you having problems streaming?

Following on from a photo and small story printed in the Sun Newspaper’s Farming feature last Friday, about the establishment of a Glossy Ibis colony in Marlborough, local man Will Parsons has counted even more birds. Will operates Driftwood Retreat & Eco-Tours and says the Glossy Ibis are from Australia, and are in the process of establishing a colony. He reported that late last summer all the birds disappeared, but his recent photo showed 16.

But this week Will counted even more – 27 Glossy Ibis, and he’s looking to ‘quack the case’. “Where are they all coming from? To our amazement they have increased in number from 16-27. “Some are juvenile with their somewhat more dowdy plumage but a majority are adults in their lovely iridescent breeding plumage. These pairs will soon be nesting at the Hardings Road oxidation ponds,” he says. If you have seen these birds over the winter, contact Will at info@driftwoodecotours.co.nz

Christmas appeal for children in need By Celeste Alexander Children come into a foster care environment for many different reasons, but the one thing they do have in common is they are in need of a safe place to call home and people to care for them. Bl e n h e i m wo m a n L e o n i e McLauchlan is one of many foster parents in Marlborough who open their homes and hearts to help these children. She’s been a foster parent for 23 years and more recently, around two years ago, she also took on the role of Foster Hope Marlborough co-ordinator. Foster Hope Marlborough is a charity based organisation that helps to provide children placed into foster care with the necessities. It’s common for a child to arrive on their foster family’s doorstep with little to nothing, so this is where FosterHope Marlborough comes in. “I’ve seen this myself with a little four-year-old girl who arrived one night with a bag she had packed herself. In that bag she had one shoe, a tiara, a purse and her mum’s dress – all things that were important to her at the time. “I had to call on a friend who was able to provide some clothes for her, but this is actually a reality for many children. “FosterHope Marlborough makes up backpacks to give to children who are removed from their homes which contain toiletries, new pyjamas, underwear, socks and some items to show them they are loved, like books and a cuddly toy. “For teenagers who are transitioning to independence we also put together flat packs which include things to take flatting such as sheets,

a pillow, duvet, crockery, cutlery, bath towels etc. “We receive so much wonderful support from the community by way of donations which makes this possible,” Leonie says. With the festive season fast approaching unfortunately it’s a time where child protection agencies are faced daily with the reality and severity of child abuse, neglect and crisis in the Marlborough community, she says. “It’s sad but our aim is to provide a little bit of happiness and hope to our most vulnerable children when often hope is lost and grief and fear/ depression invade their lives.” FosterHope Marlborough runs a Christmas present drive where donations of new, unwrapped presents for children in foster care are collected and distributed out to where the need is. The Sun Newspaper is proud to be supporting FosterHope Marlborough’s Christmas Drive by holding its annual Christmas Appeal for the month of November. It’s an annual event that the Sun Newspaper has been running for many years to support local charitable organisations. For anyone willing to support this appeal, Christmas present donations can be brought into the Sun Newspaper office and placed under the Christmas tree. Some gift ideas suggested by social workers include: Girls – Jewellery for ages 7-12, craft making kits, novelty toiletries such as bath gels, moisturisers, hair accessories, beach bags, jandals, snuggle rugs and board games. Boys – Cars and trucks, Lego sets, beach bags, jandals, sports balls,

Tragedy in Havelock Tragedy struck Havelock on Tuesday after a six-year-old boy was recovered from the water at the marina. Police say Nekko Paul Haworth of Richmond, Nelson was reported missing about 6.25am. The Police Dive Squad arrived on the scene about 1.45pm and after a short search they located him. The matter has been referred to the Coroner and a post-mortem has been requested.

Public planting day in Renwick There will be a public planting day and public meeting held on Sunday, 2-4pm, for the first stage of the new Village Green in Renwick, situated behind the skate park. Renwick Smart and Connected invites the public to go along, help them plant and view information about what is planned in and around Renwick for the next 12 months, plus it’s an opportunity to have your say on what you think the community needs.

sports sets and board games. “Items such as board games are wonderful present ideas,” Leonie adds. “They promote family fun and interaction. “There’s no better feeling than being able to give a Christmas

gift to a foster child and say it’s from someone in town who was thinking of them,” she says. A n d b e c a u s e F o s t e rHope Marlborough covers Marlborough and Nelson, some presents do go over to Nelson.

Police are warning of a scam linked to New Zealand Post that is currently making the rounds via email. Police say it appears that New Zealand Post has been the victim of a hacker and customers are being sent an email requiring payment for parcel delivery. Obviously people expecting items from New Zealand Post are more likely to click the link and pay the fee. Unfortunately, the payment goes to those responsible for the hacking. New Zealand Post do not charge for delivery of parcels after processing. The customer requesting use of their parcel service pays the fee when engaging New Zealand Post to deliver a parcel.

Sun Business Update

Raupo returns to Marlborough A lot has taken place in the last 12 months for Jugal Kishore. He purchased popular riverside restaurant, Saveur Café, Bistro & Patisserie, in September 2018 and after much consideration and feedback from his customers, he’s gone back to the business’s original name – Raupo Café & Restaurant. Last week saw the relaunch where Jugal and his family showcased the new décor and menu for Raupo. “This restaurant has always been known as Raupo and over the past year since we took over, we have been asked by our customers if we would go back to that name,” Jugal says. “We gave it a lot of consideration and consulted with Marcel Rood who first established Raupo. We took inspiration from Marcel

and he really motivated our staff which we are very grateful for. “We have also had Simone from Cinnamon House come in and consult on our décor, and now we are very excited for our customers to come in and experience what we have to offer,” Jugal says. The menu features some of the ‘old’ as well as new dishes with a European fusion. The wine list has also been relaunched to feature mostly Marlborough wines. At the front of the restaurant there will still be the traiteur where customers can get their takeaway coffee and enjoy the cakes and slices available. Raupo Café & Restaurant will be open all day, seven days a week from 7.30am until late.

By Bill McElhinney They’ve shared gym time, sad times, fun times and years of friendship, but like all good things it has come to an end. It all started in 1998 when community stalwart Viv Broughton was asked to take over the running of a women’s fitness class that had been meeting in the old Marlborough Amateur Weightlifting gym adjacent to the swimming pool. Viv, a former netballer and netball coach, was a regular at the class and when they lost their instructor “they were devastated,” says Viv. “There were tears at the thought of the group being disbanded, so I was persuaded to take over running it! “We had a Health and Safety inspector come over from Nelson to make sure we were doing it right and my daughter, Kirsty, was cajoled to come to help out.” The sessions were popular with the women, providing an opportunity for participants to work on their fitness and flexibility. There was also a good deal of support and friendship, and some of the participants were widows who had nursed husbands through challenging circumstances. “We had three aims: Fun, fitness and friendship,” Viv says. When the new Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 was established the group moved to the Amateur Weightlifters new location within the Stadium complex and continued their fitness and friendships. Viv ran her last circuit class in December, 2018, after 18 years, but the group continued with their

Tuesday and Thursday classes with the assistance of Stadium 2000 staff. There have been up to 30 women in the group, and as well as enjoying exercise and social times they have also banded together to support one another in times of sadness as well as raising money for local charities. “We’ve had Christmas functions, made donations to the Food Bank and raised over $18,000 for charities,” Viv says. The women have also enjoyed

a social time after each gym session, meeting first at what was Chequers coffee bar, and more recently at Fairweathers for the past 11 years. But health and safety regulations have meant the Weightlifters gym was no longer available to the group, and a few weeks ago they held their last session together, followed by a social time at Fairweathers, where the staff provided a cake to mark the occasion. “It was a bit sad,” says long

time circuit member Barb Thomas, “But times change and we have to move on.” The Stadium staff have offered the group the opportunity to use other Stadium facilities, including two new exercise rooms on the ground floor as well as the Stadium gym. “Some of the group still go to the Stadium, but they go on different days, so we’re split up now. But most of us are still exercising. You’ve got to keep moving!”

Vote today!

Dog Show delights

Voting in this year’s local government election closes at 12 noon this Saturday 12 October – so make sure you drop your envelope off at Council’s reception in time. It’s important to note that if you enrolled after 16 August 2019 - for example if you turned 18 after this date, or if you have moved address recently, you won’t get your voting papers in the mail. You’ll have to request special voting papers from the Council’s electoral officers. You can get in touch with them by emailing election@ marlborough.govt.nz, or Ph: 03 520 7400 before 5.00 pm today, Friday 11 October.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes strutted their stuff and showed off their skills in Blenheim last week as they competed in the 2019 Black Hawk National Dog Show. Over 1200 dogs descended on Blenheim for the four day show vying for championship titles in both the National Breed and National Obedience Shows, as well as the Agility Dog Sports Competition. Council’s Regional Events Advisor, Samantha Young, said the show was a great success for Marlborough. “It was the first time the National Dog Show has been held in Blenheim and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Out of town visitors praised the Show organisers and acknowledged the welcome and hospitality they received whilst they were in Marlborough. Hosting the event in Blenheim has brought a number of benefits to our region including an estimated economic impact of $1.4m.”

You can also cast a special vote if your voting papers are lost or damaged. All voting papers must be received by Council’s electoral officer by 12 noon tomorrow, Saturday 12 October 2019.

2019 Youth Civic Award winners The 2019 Youth Civic Awards were held in the Council Chambers last week and recognised four young locals. Selected for awards were Martinett Gouws, Joshua Leota, Shannon McLean and Luke Paul. Mayor John Leggett said the award recipients received endorsements from groups and organisations they’ve been involved with, which made for inspiring reading.

“I’m glad we have these awards to recognise our most civic-minded young people – it gives us all confidence for the future if we have teens of this calibre coming out of Marlborough,” he said. The Awards are an initiative of the Marlborough Youth Council and are a positive way for Council to support and encourage young people who’re prepared to put their hands up and make a contribution.

Ageing Positively – Check what you might get An online eligibility guide from the Ministry of Social Development is a great first step to understanding what financial assistance might be available to you, and how you can access it. The ‘Check What You Might Get’ guide takes you through a series of simple questions about your circumstances, your family, children, income, health, expenses and living situation. Once you have answered all the questions you will get a list with details of the services you may be able to access, along with an estimate of financial assistance you might qualify for.

Some people may be eligible for extra help with NZ Super such as the Accommodation Supplement, Disability Allowance or Temporary Additional Support. You can then view further information about these services and how to apply. The guide works on any computer or mobile device and does not store any of the information you enter. Feedback from Marlburians on Council’s review of speed limits on local roads has seen more than 470 submissions received from across the district. Marlborough Roads Manager Steve Murrin thanked those who took the time and effort to make a submission. “It’s great to hear the views of those who gave us their suggestions and to see so many taking an active interest in road safety in Marlborough,” Mr Murrin said. The review asked people what they considered to be appropriate speed

limits on local roads. It did not include state highways which are managed by the New Zealand Transport Agency. All submissions will now be analysed and summarised. Marlborough Roads will present a report outlining its recommendations to the incoming Council at the Assets and Services Committee meeting in November. A copy of the submissions received will accompany the report. “A second phase of formal consultation will be carried out next year if we do propose speed limit changes for some local roads,” Mr Murrin said.

Amnesty tipping in Wairau Valley and Grovetown Council is trialling free tip days at transfer stations in an effort to reduce illegal dumping across the district. On Saturday 12 October 2019 you won’t have to pay to dump your rubbish at the Wairau Valley Transfer Station. There will also be a free skip in Grovetown, at the Grovetown recycling site. Bypass toll What a good idea - of course those people on a tight schedule would happily pay a few dollars to travel on the new bypass - lets try it.

Have had the hospital trees as neighbors for the past 36years we are over them! Winter sun disappears very early afternoon, no winter drying of washing, mossy lawn!

Johns Kitchen. To the person who says there shouldn’t be any unemployment in Blenheim... looking at them, would you seriously employ that lot?

Complex issues In response to the text about clients of John’s Kitchen: if you took 5 minutes to chat with them you may discover a range of complex issues that make it difficult for them to find employment. You may also find that a number of them are taking steps to overcome these challenges, which in itself takes courage and hard work. So next time you drive past how about being grateful for your own circumstances and instead of casting judgement, say to yourself: ‘But for the grace of God, there go I’.

How dare you Re johns kitchen. How dare you. We grow veges in our garden and give to the kitchen. We are on a pension and at least we know they are having fresh vegetables.

Great service John’s Kitchen supplies a great service to the community! Have helped out there twice this year as a volunteer. Have the knockers ever given their time to help!!

Woes nearly over To the sad serial complainer that has nothing else to do but protest election signs on Grove Rd. Your woes are nearly over. Now about those noisy frost fans and those pesky whitebaiters at the Diversion screaming delight at another record catch. You’ll be kept busy but Council staff will miss you terribly! Try noise control!

A man with his business sign on his truck spends a lifetime looking for work and an honest days work for what he does for others. A politician with a sign on his/her vehicle is not looking for work as they do it for short term personal political gain at the expense of the working mans taxes. Gotcha!!

Disrespectful To the clown that left the big swastika on the sand at whites bay last week, are you proud of yourself? Also why did you leave the tap running on full? You need to learn some respect, people like you are a waste of space.

Great service Wave Cafe, what great friendly service in Picton, at Wave, coffee excellent and great food, will definitely take friends there.

Read the signs Endeavour Park, Shelley Beach, Picton Mountain Bike Tracks, dogs are not permitted. Picton locals should know better and read the signs.

Olympic sport? Come on NZ. What’s happening to society when TV is promoting this rubbish called UFC fight. It’s like a couple of animals fighting and you people who follow it should have a decent look at yourselves. Next thing they will make it an Olympic sport.

Win win! Finance ad on TV $15,000 @ $57 per week for 5 years, and US Govt environmentalists saying the world has only 12 years left, our kids being brainwashed! Well, I am off to buy my dream muscle car as it means I get 7 years finance free to enjoy life. Love dem experts.

Earplugs? Helicopters @ 5.a.m. Until sunrise. Is anyone giving out earplugs. Guess it’s for frost of cherries. But....!!!

Carbon vintage I guarantee readers never consider how much carbon is created in a bottle of juice. The fuel alone of excavators, tractors, pickers, trucks, chemicals and sprayers, frost wind turbine machines, helicopters, staff vans, waste fires, not counting the 40 litres of clean water abused for the mere masses each bottle! I see no noise pollution either. Another glass darling, lets do more next year?

Zip, zilch, zero All sitting Councillors pay lip service only to global warming. What have any of them done to address local air pollution, ie burning coal? Answer is zip, zilch, zero.

Short sighted? Just found out that our local House of Hearing has been taken over by some outfit from Australia and they are making Jan the wonderful receptionist redundant. How short sighted are these fools. Blenheim has an aging population and after trying the others I went to and stayed with the best. This was mainly due to Jan whose friendly smile always greets us.

Dogs in town Hi!! A shout out to Marlb District Council for Dogs in town area over October. I’m thrilledmy Border collie is happy (as he can share his great Social prowess) and my cats get free time at home to Party!!! Lol

Te Pataka Night Market showcases Maori enterprise By Bill McElhinney Local carver Lewis Smith takes his family to the Pelorus River to collect the special stone he uses for his work. “It’s a family affair,” Lewis says, “my wife Sophie and our daughters go to collect pakohe – the stone from the Top of the South.” Lewis, of Ngati Kuia, Ngati Apa Ki Te Ra To, and Ngai Tahu descent, draws inspiration and ideas from his knowledge of his ancestors. He uses the pakohe, from the Top of the South mineral belt, because it is the same stone that was used by his ancestors to make tools and weapons. Pakohe is known as the ancestor of pounamu (greenstone), and was used as a tool far before pounamu was discovered by Maori. “The carvings tell our story,” Lewis says. “Te Tau Ihu Taonga - Treasures from the top of the south.”

Lewis and Sophie will be among the stallholders at the popular Te Pataka o Wairau Maori Night Market, which will kickstart Labour Weekend at Seymour Square on Friday, October 25, from 4-8pm. There will be a great line up of authentic Maori arts, crafts, rongoa and a range of kai from local enterprises such as Te Tau Ihu Taonga, Big House Honey, The Aunties, Kinaman and The Kai Shack. The event is designed to showcase Maori businesses and products within the community, and will deliver a range of Maori delights alongside entertainment from local kapa haka roopu and individual local performances. “The local legend award, a tradition of the market, will be presented on the night as this is a chance for us to pay tribute and say thank you to our Maori volunteers who work tirelessly for and within

the Maori community,” says market chair, Dr Lorraine Eade. The work Gemma McKinney has done for the Marlborough Maori community was celebrated at the market last year. Gemma was honoured for being part of the organising team of Te Pataka o Wairau and for the huge voluntary hours she puts into community groups like Maori Women’s Welfare League and Maori Wardens. A Taonga made by Tasman Pounamu Carver, Taonga by Timoti, was presented to Gemma for her aroha and her manaakitanga to the Marlborough Maori community. Redwoodtown School, Queen Charlotte College and Marlborough Girls’ and Boys’ College groups will perform at the market this year, along with Emile, Emma Jaye, Tui, Cass and Tee and Te Moutere Tawhiti o Wairau.

Te Tauihu Taonga carver Lewis Smith with daughters Pirihira and Mahina and some of the pendants he has carved. Lewis will be among the stall holders at the upcoming Te Pātaka Night Market.

Pounamu carver Timoti presented a Taonga to Gemma McKinney at the Maori Night Market last year in celebration of all the work she does for the Malborough Maori community.

While the club welcomes these improvements, they are also welcoming a number of new drivers who have registered to ESS and will be racing during the season. “We’ve had an increase in youth ministocks which is great to see, including two sisters from Christchurch, one from Nelson and one new driver from Blenheim,” Shaloe says. “The streetstocks have also increased by four drivers so overall it’s really pleasing to see the number of drivers growing across the classes.”

Proud Print Partner for

Eastern States Speedway ended its last season on a high after being named one of four finalists in ‘The Most Improved Track’ category in the Speedway New Zealand awards. Now with the Opening Night about to kick off next weekend, the club is looking forward to a ground shaking, action packed season ahead. Heading the committee once again, Shaloe Lammas is in her second year as president and says while last season was good, the 2019/2020 season is set to be even bigger and better. “The club has spent the off season making improvements to the pit area and clubrooms,” she explains. “This includes a major overhaul of the pit area. We built a new compound and inside will be where our gear checking, arm band registrations and SNZ stewards will be based. “We have also sold the naming rights to our main tower to MTF Blenheim who have been amazing sponsors of the club. They have painted it bright yellow and blue and it really looks awesome. “The track’s infield has been levelled and grass seeded, thanks to the generosity of OsGro, and we have also had a massive refurbishment of the clubrooms with a new kitchen installed thanks to the donation of materials from ITM Picton and Contour Roofing Blenheim,” she says.

Looking ahead to the 14 race meetings on the ESS calendar which begin next Saturday, and finishes next year on April 12, 2020, Shaloe says there are some “exciting” events planned. “The November 23 meeting is the one I’m most excited about. “It’s a really big meeting with the Production Open Champs which features the Martin Motors 20 Lap Trophy, we are also having the Canterbury ATVs racing, and the Stop Family Violence Development Stockcar Teams Racing for new stockcar

Dance, drama, and dreams By Aimee O’Hagan For Blenheim 10 year-old, James Dight, all the world is quite literally a stage. In August, the young musical theatre enthusiast was told that he had been selected to be part of the Kiwi Allstars group – 30 New Zealanders aged 11 to 18 who will travel to the U.S. in January, 2021 to achieve their musical theatre dreams. This team of next generation performers will travel to New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles to sing, dance, and act on stages at world-famous destinations such as Broadway and Disneyland. The trip will also give the students a chance to work with professionals, attend exclusive workshops, and perform with 7000 other children from around the globe at the Junior Theatre Festival. After spending approximately 17 to 18 days in the U.S., the group will say their reluctant goodbyes and return home. James is the only child from Marlborough to be chosen for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “It’s a dream come true,” he says. “I felt so lucky to be chosen... I’m very impressed with myself!” The Richmond View School student has been doing musical theatre for two years, and dancing

for one. A dedicated member of Marlborough Children and Youth Theatre and DANCE On Grove, James has been in multiple local productions, including Cats, James and the Giant Peach, Mary Poppins, Don Quixote, and Follow The Yellow Brick Road. He is currently busy rehearsing for DANCE On Grove’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Accompanying James on the exciting trip across the globe will be his mother, Alison, who says that the two have to raise a combined cost of approximately $15,500 in order to attend. “We’ve raised just over $3000 so far,” Alison says. “We’ve done a pizza night, we’re selling t-shirts, and we’ve also sold a bunch of pies.” From this point onwards, the plan is to continue fundraising and saving as much as they can. “Next year we plan to do a variety concert with other talented people in Marlborough, do a mufti day at school, have a sausage sizzle, and hold some raffles. “We are also hoping for some sponsorship.” To find out more or to help James out with a monetary donation, Alison can be contacted at dightfamily@gmail.com, or on James’ Facebook page, ‘James Kiwi Allstars 2021’.

Ten year-old local, James Dight, is one of 30 young kiwis who are set to travel to the U.S. in 2021 and perform alongside 7000 other musical theatre lovers from around the world.

Keeping safe in the great outdoors

Carry a Personal Locator Beacon/EPIRB. These devices make rescue quick, effective and efficient, when time is often a major factor.

By Blenheim Community Constable Russ Smith As the weather improves and daylight arrives earlier and extends our leisure time in the evening, more and more people head away from home and into our rural, reserve, national park and high country areas. Unfortunately, Search and Rescue teams also become busier as a result. Whether you are a day-walker, tramper, wildlife photographer or hunter, there are some ‘must-do’ safety processes you should always have in place before venturing out, both for your own safety, and to ensure that if things do go wrong, there will be an appropriate response triggered that results

in the best outcome for you in the situation. The best advice the Police can give you to keep you safe and your property safe when you venture into the great outdoors is: Don’t leave anything valuable in your vehicle when parking and leaving it remotely. If you have an immobiliser switch for your vehicle, use it. Let family/friends or the Department of Conservation (DoC) know of your intentions – complete an ‘Intentions Form’ including date and time in and out, tramping/hunting area & details of those to contact if overdue. Please, carry a Personal Locator Beacon/EPIRB. These

devices make rescue quick, effective and efficient, when time is often a major factor. If you’re planning a hunting trip on DoC land, please ensure everyone in your group have a hunting permit from DoC for that area. It’s very quick and easy to do online and will save you the grief of an unlawful hunting conviction and everything that goes with it. Likewise, have permission to hunt on privately-owned rural land. Carry enough food, clothing & cold weather survival equipment to keep you safe and warm in case you’re delayed or unable to walk out on time. Prepare for the worst plan for the best!

At the end of the season when the dahlias die down, you should lift the tubers and store them till the spring and then start them off again.

gardening this week The weeds spring up in spring!: By Wally Richards The spring weather is still a bit patchy: some nice days, bit of rain and some not so nice days. When we can we should take advantage of the nice days to control the spring growth. Weeds are taking advantage of the conditions and sprouting up all over the gardens. I like to deal to small weed seedlings with a sharp knife when they are growing between plants. You can scrape the blade over the soil, scraping the little weeds off at ground level and then leave them to compost where they fall. For larger weeds, just slip the blade into the soil at an angle to slice through the roots below the crown. Then the weed can be left on the bare soil with its cut roots exposed to the sun. You are providing fresh vegetation to compost back directly into the soil, and the roots left under the soil surface will also rot, increasing the fertility of the soil. The beneficial fungi in the soil will not be disrupted and will continue aiding your plants in gathering of nutrients and moisture.

Goodness taken from the soil as the weeds grow is recovered and returned, along with a bit more than before through the individual weed’s internal chemical factory. The weeds left on the soil surface will break down very quickly and disappear over the warmer months. I am always amazed that if you mow the lawn without a catcher the lawn clippings disappear with a few days. Some switched on gardeners have started using the Super Compost Accelerator at 200 grams per litre of water to quickly compost weeds where they are growing. This is best done on a sunny day when the ground is on the dry side, with a little Raingard added to the spray. A lot of vegetables and flowers should be in and getting established and now you can start looking at planting some of the less hardy ones. Tomatoes can be planted, but it is a bit too soon for cucumbers and a few other more tender varieties. Vegetables and fruit that you grow in your own back yard using natural

methods which have proven their worth over thousands of years will not only be brimming with healthy goodness, they will taste far superior and you, on the top of the food chain will reap great health. Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. The first basic principle of good health and a long life. You need to grow your own and then you can see for yourself the difference in your health, the flavour and the change in your well being. Gardening is one of the most health activities that you can do. It requires minimum energy, gets you out into the fresh air and sunlight and makes you one with nature to your emotional well being. Recently I purchased some dahlia tubers to grow in an area in the front of the house. There is two ways you can grow the tubers. You can just place them into the spot where you want them to grow and let nature do its thing. The other way is you layer them in compost in a tray

and get them to sprout. Once you have shoots up about 12cm then you carefully lift the tuber and pare off the shoot with a sharp knife, taking a bit of the parent tuber and the new roots of the shoot. You can either plant these directly into a freshly prepared bed or pot them up to grow them on a bit to obtain a stronger plant, and then plant them out. The shoots will quickly grow into nice dahlia plants, which form a new set of tubers. You will end up most likely with a number of shoots, which means you have a lot more plants to use for displays, or you can give surplus plants to friends. At the end of the season when the dahlias die down, you should lift the tubers and store them till the spring and then start them off again as described above. The old tubers can be composted once you have your new plants. Your dahlias will perform much better using this method than if you just leave the tubers in the ground to come again each season.

his team. “It hasn’t just got one runway, so classic aircraft can take off into the wind,” Tony says. Omaka has become a bit of a hub for aircraft restoration, Tony says. Paul and Pip Hally from PMH Aviation Limited collect aircraft that have a rich history with the region. They’ve brought back to Marlborough a De Havilland Foxmoth from 1947, one of only seven in the world. With two other parties, they are rebuilding a Waco aircraft, which is the only one of its type in the world, and was previously owned by Marlborough Aero Club in 1936. “Whether you like aviation or not these aircraft are very significant to the region,” Pip says.

Graham Orphan has been publishing the Classic Wings Magazine for 25 years out of Omaka. Having lived in three different countries and travelled many more, Graham chooses to live in Marlborough specifically for the airfield. “I can’t think of a place I’ve lived in or visited, or another community with the richness and ability to work together for the greater good than Omaka,” Graham says. From the world-class Omaka Airshow to the Aviation Heritage Museum and everything else in between, the buzz around Omaka still grows. “People from all over the world are drawn to the positive energy and great activities here. “The community is absolutely remarkable,” Graham says.

Chief pilot of Fighter Flights, Graeme Frew, and Jay McIntyre of JEM Aviation, have taken a restored Yak 3 Russian World War II bomber across the world for the last two years. The Yak 3, which is typically used for scenic joy rides was taken apart, shipped to the Reno Championship Air Race in America, and pieced back together in an open-air pit there for the public to see. “It was known as a Yak in a Box,” pilot Graeme laughs. Jay, Graeme and their team were the first New Zealand team to enter the competition. “Americans were blown away with what we were doing. “We might have even taught them a few things,” Jay says. Last year, they went back for another go and had great success. They even got on the local news.

A popular place for aviation enthusiasts

The Marlborough Aero Club at Omaka Aerodrome has a long and intertwined history with the Marlborough region and its community. Established in 1928, it is one of the first aero clubs established in New Zealand and the first to own its own plane. Last year the Marlborough Aero Club celebrated its 90 year anniversary in April with an open day, where the public were invited to have a look around the Omaka Aerodrome. The club has over 350 members from all over the country and around the world. The Aero Club teaches students of all ages and stages flying and other vital aircraft skills, whether for recreational or professional

OMAKA

Omaka Aerodrome is a hidden gem in Marlborough, but is well known on the world stage. With its grassy runways, wide open spaces, world class restoration projects on classic aircraft, and one-of-a-kind aeroplanes, it’s a buzzing community. For aviation enthusiasts, you can’t beat the ideal flying weather that the region offers. With facilities like this, it’s no surprise that a small town like Blenheim has individuals from all over the globe coming to check out its heritage. For Classic Aero Machinery Service’s Tony Wytenburg, the Omaka Aerodrome location is essential to his aircraft restoration work. The several grass runways provide ideal conditions for the many classic aircraft which are built and tested by Tony and

Spring weather challenges Waikawa Boating fleet The weather gods brought changeable spring conditions to the Waikawa Boating Club’s race fleet for race one of the Marlborough Sounds Marinas Spring Twilight Series. Gusts of up to 35 knots caused a brief delay to race start before racing started under grey skies with variable winds punctuated by brief showers of rain and hail. Division 3 opened with a tight battle, Bruce Lock taking the win in the Lotus 10.6 Sea Fox from Ian Michel’s Wright 10 Playwright by 16 seconds, with Mac Post’s Townson 9.6 less than a minute back in third. Division 2 featured the largest fleet of the night with 12 boats on the start

line, Richard Coon continuing a strong run of twilight series results taking the line and handicap double with his Hanse 400 Raconteur ahead of Nicky Jenkins and Paul Skelton’s Hanse 385 On Appro, second on line and handicap, while Matt Michel brought the Ross 830 Bump n Grind home for third on line and handicap. With perennial line honours winner Satellite Spy out of the water for maintenance, Bob and Jenny Crum’s J120 Bluebird took the opportunity to claim line honours as well as finishing third on handicap. Showing good form after taking out the recent Mud House women’s regatta, Global took second on line and first on

handicap for a great start to the season for recently appointed rear commodore – sailing David Grigg. Flying Tiger made the most of the variable conditions to finish third on line but a strong showing from vice commodore Dave Kelway saw Khamsin home second on handicap. As boats bed in new crew members and those who hibernated over the cooler months come to terms with a return to the race track it’s great to see strong competition on the water in all divisions. With the newly created Thursday evening short-handed Twilight Series opening on Thursday there will be little rest for some skippers and crew as the season moves rapidly into high gear.

Croquet players off to Timaru

Brooklyn Croquet Club members who will compete in South Island Croquet Masters Tournament. Rear: Jack Dijkstra, Marg Foxton, John Best and Alan Gare. Front: Marg Campbell, Jan Clelland, Joy Hayes and Roz Bridges.

Eight members of the Brooklyn Croquet Club are travelling to Timaru this week to take part in the South Island Croquet Masters Tournament. Jack Dijkstra, Marg Foxton, Jan Clelland and Joy Hayes are all competing in singles, and Marg Campbell and Alan Gare are competing in the doubles, as are Roz Bridges and John Best, with Jan Clelland and Joy Hayes both partnering members from the Ashburton Croquet Club. Play starts next Monday, October 14, with the singles and the doubles start on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, all playing golf croquet. The golf croquet is then to be followed with two days of association croquet, another aspect of croquet within New Zealand. Timaru have had excellent response to the tournament and will be using three clubs within the city to accommodate all players. The wish now is for fine weather!

Success for Marlborough at Nationals table tennis Eight Marlborough-based players competed in the senior events at the National Table Tennis Championships in Christchurch, and silver and bronze medals were brought back to Marlborough. Alex Kennedy competed in the B grade men’s teams with two players from Sri Lanka. They won four out of five matches. Alex beat the current New Zealand under-18 champion Jason Sivilay in a team win against Waitemata2. In the individual events, Alex qualified for post section play in the B grade, losing to team-mate and eventual B grade winner Helitha Hendawitharana. In the C Grade, Alex was seeded 8th and reached the final losing to

the top seed, Jay Zhu. Alex and Matt Pigou played well in the C grade doubles, beating the top seeds in the quarter-final, before bowing out in the semi-finals. Nathan Watson was part of the Manawatu 2 Team that finished third in the B grade. Nathan was seeded 2nd in the B grade doubles with Nelson’s Daniel Astle, and they reached the semi-final. Nathan beat the well-performed David Walle of Canterbury in the qualifying for A Grade, to make the main draw. Jacqui Wood was a draft player for the Manawatu Women’s Team, who finished in 6th place in a very high quality field. Jacqui beat Sophie Low of North Shore, who is seeded fourth in the under-18

individual events. In the individual events, Jacqui reached the final of the over-30 singles, over-30 women’s doubles and the over-30 mixed doubles. Jacqui paired with her daughter Vanessa in the open women’s doubles and they took a set from the number one seeds, who went on to win the title. In the open mixed doubles, she paired with Hasitha Samaraweera and they won a round before bowing out to Dean Shu and Li Chunli, who is a legend in New Zealand table tennis, having won the 2002 Commonwealth singles title and being honoured in the 2017 New Year’s Honours List for services to table tennis. Matt Pigou played only in the

individual events, but what a tournament he had. In addition to a bronze medal in the C grade men’s doubles with Alex, Matt reached the quarter-finals of the C grade singles, losing to eventual winner Jay Zhu. Juniors competition Vanessa Wood-Lin played for Canterbury 3 in the Women’s Teams and won both her singles matches against Australia in a 4-3 win. Rob Honour was playing in his first Nationals, and in partnership with Matt, they were just pipped 16-14 in the fifth set against the fourth seeds who later claimed the title. Vanessa Wood-Lin reached the final of the girls’ under-15

doubles at the nationals with her regular partner, Lydia MercerBeumelburg of Canterbury. Vanessa played very well in the singles events, reaching the last 16 in both the under-18 girls’ Singles and under-15 girls’ singles. The Marlborough under-15 Boys’ Team of Rory Osborne, Joseph Ruwhiu and Peyton Ritchie competed in the B grade. Their closest match was against Canterbury 2, losing 4-3. Rory won both his singles, with Joseph winning one. Hannah Smit was a draft player and played for Presidents1 in the Girls under-18 grade. She won a single and a double against Presidents2 in a 7-0 win and was part of the team that lost to Australia 4-3.

sports talk with Jacob Page

Spark Sport flop offers Sky a chance Like a phoenix from the ashes, it seems Sky Television have a chance to soar again thanks to Spark Sport. The Rugby World Cup coverage simply has not been good enough and not worth the $59.95 to $89.95 price tag. Personally, I’ve had only minor issues and nothing that has seriously impacted my viewing experience but it is clear I am one of the lucky few. Many sport fans, who have be-

moaned Sky Television’s absurdly high prices and overall monopoly on sport coverage in New Zealand have likely realised the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. I have just signed up for all Sky Sport channels through their app Sky Sport Now for $39.95 a month on a 12 month contract. I get all sport channels and on demand sport content but no other Sky products, no movies, no ba-

sic package, just sport that I can chromecast to my television. As a fan of rugby, league, cricket, American sport, golf and tennis majors as well as all the one-off events to me it is a no-brainer at that price point. Four years ago I was paying Sky over $100 a month for many channels I did not want or need. This option cuts the fat and gives me a price I can live with. Spark Sport have a lot of work to

do and while their initial response to technical issues was admirable, it is clear streaming issues are still occurring and now the company is trying to minimise the issue publicly while trumpeting the games where there are no issues. Well, I’m sorry, Spark Sport, patting yourselves on the back for delivering the service at the standard you should have is a silly way to get a sore arm. Public perception is starting to

Open Day for surf life saving club Winter is gone and those fresh frosty spring mornings where we wake to crisp sunny day are here which can only mean one thing, summer is on its way. With the summer season approaching the Rarangi Surf Life Saving Club are holding their annual Open Day, to be held out at Whites Bay on Sunday October 20 from 10:30am to 2:30pm. If you have ever wanted to see what’s available and the many different ways you can be involved this will be a great chance to head on out and meet some of the team and ask those burning questions. On the open day there will be gear out for you to look at and ask questions about, some games down on the beach and for those who are keen bring your togs or wetsuit out and we can take you out on the water. There will be IRB (the orange boats) rides going within the bay for all ages, boards that you can have a go paddling on, and much more.

Some delicious food vendors are hoping to also make an appearance including Mr Whippy, Lil’Orbits Donuts and a sausage sizzle. Surf Life Saving is a family friendly Volunteer organisation with opportunities galore for the whole family. There’s the Junior Surf which is based around gaining water confidence and learning lifelong skills for children aged roughly from five-12 years. Moving up from there is the Rookie Lifeguards who help out on patrols and learn the ropes for ages 12-14. Then there’s the lifeguarding area from age 14 years and up where people can become a qualified Surf Lifeguard with opportunities to gain first aid awards, learn how to use a variety of equipment, become a crew person or driver in the IRB’s (Inflatable Rescue Boats), and much more including instructing, running the patrol, and examining new lifeguards just to name a few. Recently a new role has been developed for those who want

come back to Sky Sport, who have lost a lot of subscribers over the past year but may have a chance to claw most of them back if they are smart with the packages they offer. Spark Sport must go back to the drawing board if they want to be a serious competitor for sport rights in this country. This experience has been a failure. Perhaps that’s harsh but it is the reality and now Sky has a chance to capitalise.

This new qualification allows you to learn all the skills like a lifeguard but miss out the water components. Picton golf results

The Marlborough Seniors Tennis open two day tournament was scheduled for the weekend of September 14 and 15, but was postponed due to the weather, so was played later in the month. This meant those competitors travelling from Christchurch didn’t make a second trip, but the Nelson women made another trip over the hill, including the eldest competitor, 88-yearold Jean Walker. With president Max George promoting participation and comradeship, local entries were good and the groups were made up this year by ability rather than by age. Each group had four or five doubles and a round
