By Bill McElhinney The celebrations are over, and now it’s down to business for re-elected Marlborough Mayor John Leggett. John won the mayoral contest by more than 3000 votes, comfortably beating rivals Jamie Arbuckle and Rick Ireland, although he was never confident of the result. “It’s a great relief,” the smiling Mayor said on Saturday afternoon as family and friends gathered at his home to celebrate his win. “I’m humbled by the continued support of the community and

thank all voters for their support and participation in the election process. “Overall it was a good contest, although I would have welcomed the opportunity for debate. “I think at the end of the day, people respond to honesty and integrity, and vote for candidates they think will serve the community with good governance. It’s satisfying to see that our voters are well informed and supportive of a transparent style of council that benefits the wider community,” John says. Continued on page 2.

Mayor back with four new councillors Continued from page 1. The Mayor will meet with all councillors over the next week to hear their views and where they see their strengths around the council table. He will make a decision about who will be Deputy Mayor after that. “Marlborough has a wealth of experience in sitting councillors and I look forward to working with them in the new term,” John says. “And I welcome the four new councillors, who are of a high calibre and represent a wide cross-section of the community.” The four new faces on the council are Thelma Sowman and David Croad for the Blenheim Ward, Barbara Faulls in the Marlborough Sounds, and Francis Maher, Wairau-Awatere. John says he is proud of the council’s achievements over the previous term and he believes that continuity will assist this momentum. “We will continue with the mahi in train; infrastructure, our environment and provision for future growth,” John says. “Council supports economic growth through Smart+Connected, and this is an ongoing investment

into our regional business success. “I look forward to strengthening our partnership with Te Tau Ihu iwi, and in this regard, the upcoming Tui250 ki Totaranui commemoration symbolises our Dual Heritage – Shared Future. “And a big community project ahead is the Blenheim Library and Art Gallery.” Mayoral hopeful Rick Ireland won’t be tossing his hat in the ring again. “The campaign cost a lot of money and I can’t afford to do that again,” Rick says. “But generally it was a marvellous experience and I met a lot of wonderful people - some of whom were very funny! “I came to like my two fellow candidates very much, even though we have considerable disagreements on policy, and I hope to be able to stay in touch with them socially. “My main concern is the rate increases and I’m a bit surprised that few people seem to hold a similar concern. “Still, that’s democracy and the people of Marlborough have decided. Jamie’s final mayoral race By Celeste Alexander “We did as much as we could do and I really felt this election would be different, but we just can’t win that mayoral seat. “It is done! This has been my final mayoral campaign and I thank everyone who supported and voted for me,” Jamie Arbuckle says. Sitting in their rural garden on Sunday morning, Jamie and Sally Arbuckle were feeling a lot more relaxed than the previous afternoon, waiting for the phone call to hear who had won the Marlborough District Council mayoral seat. The afternoon was to be a double celebration for the third time mayoral candidate who was also celebrating his belated 40th birthday. Then the call came in around 2.30pm, confirming it was John Leggett who took the top spot with approximately 3000 votes ahead of Jamie. It was “disappointing” news for Jamie as he says he felt really good about this campaign. “We had a very different response this time around but unfortunately I can see now that there’s a core support which we are not going to break through. “I feel I didn’t have the support around the council table which is where we fell over, to be quite honest. “But they are all great people and I congratulate everyone who was elected,” Jamie says. Jamie did, however, receive the highest number of votes for the Blenheim ward, with around 2600, double that of Jenny Andrews who came in with around 1292. “I’m looking forward to continuing to represent my constituents who put me here for the Blenheim ward,” he says. Now he knows he won’t be mayor, Jamie is turning his sights

Cigarettes sold to minor A tobacco retailer in Blenheim has sold cigarettes to a 16-year-old volunteer in a tobacco controlled purchase operation which was undertaken by the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service. Nineteen retailers in the Marlborough region were visited by the volunteer, who attempted to buy cigarettes from retailers under the supervision of PHS employees. The offending retailer faces a $500 fine and will be checked on a regular basis.

Rangitāne commercial property manager Corey Hebberd says they would ideally like someone who had already worke d in the hospitality industry that could operate the heart of the building. The multi-storey office block located in central Blenheim is tenanted by a range of commercial tenants and is currently 95 per cent occupied. There is no room for a commercial kitchen, so food would need to be delivered to site. The café is expected to operate as an express/takeaway style. towards preparation for the 2020 General Election as a hopeful NZ First candidate for the Kaikoura Electorate. “Next Friday I will be attending the NZ First conference in Christchurch and will be training to be a NZ First candidate,” he says. Jamie is not the only one turning their sights elsewhere following the local election.

The Marlborough District Council began their drain spraying programme to control weeds in open drains on Monday. Spraying will take place in council-maintained drains and watercourses on the Lower Wairau Plains, east of Jacksons Road and Grahams Road. If you use water from drains or watercourses in the area for irrigation, stock or harvesting watercress, please check in with council’s contractor, Downer, Ph: 03 577 5807.

Sally, who campaigned for a seat at the council table representing the Wairau-Awatere ward, missed out after receiving around 545 votes. Cynthia Brooks, Gerald Hope and Francis Maher were elected out of the six candidates. “Yes, it was disappointing, but I found the process interesting, exciting, and I really enjoyed it,” Sally says.

Sally is now focusing on supporting Jamie as well as working on launching their new family business. “We will see what the future holds but we have our Brookhaven Cottage bed and breakfast business, a huge garden and our new home – it’s a big change from our previous location on Batty’s Road,” she laughs.

Young at Heart’s golden voices By Bill McElhinney They came, they sang, they conquered! The Blenheim Young at Heart Barbershop Quartet returned from the National Barbershop convention held in Christchurch earlier this month with a cluster of awards. Nick Hassan, Brian Kirke, Jim Sampson and Chris Young entered the Open and Senior Quartet competition after qualifying to sing with only 20 other quartets at the national convention. The Young at Heart lads won the gold medal in the Senior competition, also winning the Barbershop Harmony New Zealand senior quartet championship trophy and being placed 15th in the open competition. The quartet also collected the inaugural John Buckley Memorial Trophy for the Most Improved Quartet, judged by the quartet with the most improved score from the previous year. “John was a member of the Canterbury Plainsman Chorus and was a wonderful Barbershop singer, always warm and welcoming at Barbershop conventions,” Chris Young says. “It was a great honour to win this award.” The Marlborough Sounds

Youth scheme a sweet success By Bill McElhinney Thanks to the generosity of a couple of upper Wairau honey producers, the Marlborough Youth Trust has more honey than Pooh Bear could eat in a lifetime! It’s actually honeydew, a forest honey and one of nature’s miracles. Small aphids in the beech forests produce a sticky liquid which is collected by honeybees foraging in remote native black beech forests. If you’ve been out tramping around the South Island you will have picked up on the sweet honey smell around some beech forests and the sound of bees, wasps and tuis that are all drawn to the drops of honeydew sticking out from the bark of beech trees. Heather Gilbert and Warwick Brown have 800 hives spread from Manuka Island in the upper Wairau to the Conway river. They produce manuka honey and honeydew, and recently took on students from the Marlborough Youth Employability programme who were keen for some work experience. The Youth Employability Programme pilot scheme, which got under way in the South Island for the first time last year, is geared to helping year 12 and

thank you for your support and giving me the opportunit y to work for our communit y as a councillor. They've got a sweet treat! With some of the Marlborough Youth Trust honey are Spencer Lane, Tony Bason and Rebekah Nafe.

13 students from high schools across the region learn new skills to ensure they are "work ready." The programme focuses on key competencies such as positivity, willingness to learn, team work, self management, resilience and thinking skills. All students volunteer 20 hours of their time with a community-based group. As their skills and confidence grows, the youth do 80 hours of work placements in fields of industries they think they may like to go into.

Credits are awarded for participants to put towards both Level 1 and Level 2 NCEA. “We got involved with the Youth Trust as we are retirement age and wish to leave the world a better place,” Heather says. The Youth Trust workers collected hundreds of litres of the honeydew, which they are planning to sell as a fundraiser. They are packaging it in litre containers with a label designed by Marlborough Girls’ College student Amber Holton. “Honeydew is sweet, high in

amino acids and minerals and clinical trials show it has health properties that make it highly valued in Europe,” Heather says. “It looks like golden syrup and many people have told us it is the best honey they have tasted. “It needs no treatment to keep its smooth texture and clear colour, and it retains the rich complex of antioxidants, micronutrients, minerals and vitamins that contribute to health.” Heather drizzles honeydew over desserts, pancakes, icecream, and uses it to replace sugar in recipes.

Jamie’s climate change plans

Book bugs

Dear Ed, Re-elected Marlborough District Councillor Jamie Arbuckle made a great deal of climate change in his recent election campaign. Climate change is happening, and it is everyone’s responsibility, he says. He wants decisive action to implement meaningful policy that puts climate change at the forefront of decision making before it’s too late. Nice words. But Jamie also wants to hook up with New Zealand First, the coalition government partner that has been dragging its heels on climate change. Earlier this year NZ First slowed progress on the Government’s proposed climate change legislation, leading to a missed deadline for an announcement. Parliamentary sources say the party has been more intransigent on the issue than the National Party. Perhaps Jamie is hoping he can

Sights set on helping Blenheim local, Karina Greenall, is the Marlborough-based volunteer coordinator for upcoming Blind Week – Friday 18 and Saturday 19 October – and is ready as ever to help raise money for NZ charity, Blind and Low Vision NZ. Sun reporter, Aimee O’Hagan, has a chat with Karina to find out more. Ma rlburian woman, Karina Greenall, has a kind heart, a passion for helping people, and a colossal, unequivocal love for dogs. In 2013, these three, main characterisitics were the driving forces that first led Karina to help out with ‘Red Puppy Appeal’; a movement run by kiwi organisation, Blind and Low Vision NZ (formerly known as ‘Blind Foundation’), with the motivation of raising money to help breed and train guide dogs for blind New Zealanders. Karina enjoyed contributing to the movement so much that she decided to help out with another one of the foundation’s charitable appeals: Blind Week. Blind Week, like the Red Puppy Appeal, is an important, annual event on Blind and Low Vision NZ’s calender.

“Collecting for charity isn’t a chore.” Money raised over the two day appeal helps the organisation pay for braille boards, audio books, counselling, and many other tools and services – including support with getting a job – required to best assist blind New Zealanders (or those who suffer from bad sight) in living a normal day to day life. Last year’s Blind Week saw Blind and Low Vision NZ raise approximately $5246 in Marlborough, and a staggering $259,076 across the whole of Aotearoa. “The number of kiwis who struggle with bad eyesight is huge really,”

Karina says. “There is an estimate of 30,000 New Zealanders who are blind or suffering from sight loss, but there are only 12,000 who use the services of Blind and Low Vision NZ.” Karina believes this is because many kiwis have never been completely knowledgable of the exact demographic the foundation caters for. “They changed their name from Blind Foundation to Blind and Low Vision NZ to make people aware that they’re not only here for blind people, but also for those who are experiencing low vision or any problems with their sight,” Karina explains. She says she believes the charity is an extremely important one as anyone could “benefit from it” in the future. “I wear glasses, so perhaps I could need the help of the foundation in 20 to 30 years,” Karina says. “If you donate money, you could be doing your future self a favour. “Out of all my senses, sight is the one I’d least like to lose. It is a major hurdle to get over if you do. “However, people can avoid this by getting help at an early stage.” As the organisation’s volunteer coordinator for Marlborough, Karina says she particularly enjoys two main aspects of the job: the flexibility of her role and the social interaction it allows for. “Collecting for charity isn’t a chore - it’s a way of catching up with friends while supporting a good cause,” she says. “I often go collecting and bring a friend with me to help out. “Plus it gives me time to spend with my three dogs.

Now you can own an elegantly designed SUV for less than you’ve ever paid, with a surprising array of features:

Karina Greenall is passionate about helping charitable organisations make a tangible difference.

“Volunteering for charity makes for a good quality life.” This Friday and Saturday will see Karina and the rest of her team collecting donations at different destinations around Marlborough. Karina encourages people to

look out for the collectors in bright orange jackets, who will be stationed at the following destinations: Countdown Blenheim, Countdown Redwoodtown, Countdown Springlands, PAK’n’Save, Renwick Supervalue,

and Mitre 10. Blind and Low Vision NZ are very much in need of more volunteers to help collect donations, so for more information or to register and support the cause, visit www. blindlowvision.org.nz.

Tour country gardens this weekend By Celeste Alexander There’s something really special about a country garden so why not take the opportunity to walk through some right here in Marlborough? This weekend the public will have the opportunity to view 12 gardens as part of the Wairau Valley Anglican Parish Country Gardens Tour which takes place over two days, Saturday and Sunday. How it works is that people purchase a programme for $20 which provides them with the tour details. People can get together in groups and enjoy viewing the gardens together, as well as being able to meet some of the garden owners along the way. The organisers behind this popular event are Nicky Stace and Viv Grigg who are encouraging the public to purchase a programme and enjoy the tour. “The garden owners taking part this year are very generous in sharing their little pieces of paradise with us. “There are some really beautiful properties and we encourage people to enjoy them for themselves,”

Get a group of friends together and enjoy a country garden tour this weekend.

Nicki says. In the tour there are gardens located in the Renwick area, along Rapaura Road and on properties branching off Rapaura Road. “You will need a good lot of time to get around them,” Nicki says. Dotted along the tour will be a plant stall, cake stall, a BBQ and refreshments at designated

gardens. This is the 28th year that the tour will be held with proceeds being used by the church to fund a variety of things. Programmes are $20 each for cash purchase at Devon Nursery, Islington Gardens, Selmes Garden Trust, Roselands Pets and Plants, and the Renwick Dairy.

Recently the Sun Newspaper ran a book giveaway in conjunction with local author, Trilby Johnson. Coming from a tradie family, it was easy for Brendon Adams to gain experience from a young age from within the trade industry, and now decades later he is the owner and operator of Laser Electrical Blenheim. “I left school at the age of 17 to take up an apprenticeship as an electrician. This is the same job I’ve had ever since, and definitely up there as one of the best things I’ve ever done,” he says. Laser Electrical Blenheim has been serving Marlborough since 1979, providing high quality workmanship

across a broad range of electrical services. Being in business since such a young age, Brendon has trained well over 40 apprentices over the years, currently has three on the books and will look to hire again in the New Year. “Now would be a good time to think about a career for the new year. “Many of our best apprentices have walked in of the street and impressed me. I like that approach,” he says. “Good luck at catching me though, as I am often a hard man to track down!”

Chris is a fully qualified motorcycle technician and operates his business at 42 Park Terrace in Blenheim. Joining Chris in the workshop is apprentice Jacob Harmon who specialises in the on-farm servicing. This is an area which is also getting busier, Chris says, with horticultural and agricultural

servicing keeping them busy. “We also offer a pick-up and drop off service for added convenience,” he says. It is also the season for off-road motorcycle riding and competing so for all parts, spares and repairs, and even tyres you can call in and see Chris at the workshop. “We supply Dunlop, Pirelli, Metzler tyres among other brands with a full fitting and balancing service,” he says.

Design Marlborough is a fresh new architectural design firm having only opened 12 months ago. Director Ben Stace is a proud Marlburian and possesses a strong passion for the industry, being interested in designing homes since age 10. For nearly a decade Ben has gained vast experience working with a wide range of clients from housing companies, developers, companies and individual clients. “I see myself as the conduit

through with my clients’ ideas are formed into their dream home,” he says. Ben looks to the simple structural options that can be used to maximise the budget, while still delivering the clients a beautiful home. The building process can be stressful but when working with Ben, communication is key and he is available to his clients every step of the way.

Brendon Price As a teenager, Brendon Price would often be asked by people if he could repair their computers. It was something that went from being a hobby to a growing business and by the age of 18, Brendon employed his first fulltime staff member. It’s now been 22-years and BP Computers has firmly established itself in the Marlborough market. What sets BP Computers apart from other IT service providers comes down to one simple answer; “We do everything!”

“If it’s IT related we can do it, or at the very least we can point you in the right direction,” Brendon says. “Everyone on our team is passionate about the IT industry. “We provide a one-stop-shop style of service so the next time you need help with your home or business IT call on the team at BP Computers,” Brendon says.

having fun. Team sailing is an exciting sport. No two races are alike and through team sailing young people learn the basics: boat handling, strategy and how to work with your team to create a successful combination. In team sailing in NZ we sail 420s, a type of sailing dinghy with a skipper and crew. You get to talk in the boat so you’re always part of a team.

The 'Have a Go' session is this Sunday, October 20, at 12:30pm. Meet at Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, Shelley Beach, Picton. Come along and try it out. You’ll be hooked! The event is aiming at youth sailors, aged 11/12 upwards. Life vests available. If you're interested and want more info contact Deb on 021 05 02 079. A barbecue is also planned for the 'Have a Go' day.

Spring weather and daylight saving mean more time for fun on the water in the scenic Marlborough Sounds. And what better way to enjoy than scooting along on a sailboat, powered by a stiff spring breeze? If you’ve never sailed before, but would like to have a go, the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club is giving youngsters the opportunity to try team sailing. Marlborough has a great record for team sailing success, and the club is looking for young people who are up for a challenge, who want to learn the skills of sailing, be part of a team and have great fun. Over the past years, young sailing teams from Marlborough have represented NZ in Australia in the Pacific Rim team sailing regattas in Canberra, Melbourne and Hobart. Many of our young sailors’ achievements are recorded in the Marlborough Roll of Honour. That might sound daunting, but many of the young sailors had never been in a sailboat before starting out to learn the skills, strategy and techniques under the watchful eyes of a coach. The goal is to provide entry into the sport of sailing that is affordable, fun, challenging and accessible. It’s all about getting young people on the water and

Silver medal success for local water polo team The Marlborough girls under-16 water polo team won a silver medal at the National under -16 girls division 2 water polo tournament in Auckland. The team, comprising seven Marlborough players and two players from Tauranga played really well over the course of the four day tournament. First up was Waikato, the girls’ fitness showing through and allowing them to win 21-2. The next day they played North Harbour (White), in a very close game. The girls played very well, slowing down the oppositions’ attack with tight defence, working their way to a 5-4 win. Later that evening they played Canterbury B, again tight defence and quick breaks taking them to a win, 14-2. That put them at the top of their pool, enabling them to progress through to the quarter finals the next day, playing North Harbour (Black) and coming away with a 9-1 win. Next were semi-finals against Tauranga, which was ironic given the team had two loan players from Tauranga. They had slotted in really well to the Marlborough team and played hard against their own team mates, giving Marlborough the edge so they could go on and win 9-6, putting them into the finals. On Saturday they played Rotorua in the finals, both teams not having lost a game. It was very close with the teams locked at 3-3

at half time. Rotorua played especially well in the last quarter, scoring two goals to finish up with a win 7-6, meaning Marlborough won a silver, a fantastic effort given it was the first time they had been to an under-16 national tournament. Abbey Moody from the Marlborough Water Polo Club was awarded the Most Valuable

Player for Division 2, a fantastic and well deserved achievement. Thanks to the coaches, manager and supporters who travelled to Auckland, and thanks to everyone who bought sheep manure for our fundraiser, Meaters of Marlborough for a great array of meat, Subway for providing lunch vouchers and the Stadium 2000 for providing a great training facility.
