By Aimee O’Hagan “We’re so aware that there are a lot of cats going missing... But why?” That’s an important question that Springlands local, Liz Davidson, is desperately trying to find the answer to. From the perspective of the former Mayor of Marlborough, the reason for this is clear: two special cats of her own – Morris and Molly – have also disappeared, and she wants to know what happened to them. The beloved pair of felines both went missing over eight weeks ago, with seven year-old Molly disappearing on the evening of August 23. Just over a week later, on September 6, Molly’s older brother Morris vanished too. Liz and her husband, Keith, are offering a $500 reward for anybody who can successfully bring the cats back home. Owners still suspect foul play eight weeks after cats disappear

Continued from page 1. The cats are no ordinary pair of tabbies: Morris and Molly are Maine Coons, the largest breed of domesticated cats in the world. Standing at approximately 50cm tall and one metre in length, they are a very expensive duo. “Each cat is worth approximately $1500,” Liz says. “Although I don’t like it, I can understand why someone would steal them.” Despite this, she does hope that the two have been stolen and sold – the idea of this happening is better than the devastating but completely possible alternative. “Any other thoughts of what might have happened to them are too sad to bear. “They could have been killed. “It’s heartbreaking thinking of what they could be going through.” Liz and Keith have done all they can to try and find the cats, including scouring websites and pages such as TradeMe and Lost and Found Pets NZ, setting up cat traps in their back garden, letting local veterinary centres and the SPCA Renwick

Centre know, and even posting about it on Facebook. In fact, Liz’s post about the missing felines has been shared 873 times. “So far – since Morris and Molly went missing – we’ve had a lot of help and support from people,” Liz says. “We are very thankful for the kindness of strangers and for those that have contacted us.” However, not much has seemed to come of the mystery; unfortunately, Liz and Keith are no closer to finding a solution than they were when the cats vanished. “We recently discovered a lead but the police have yet to examine that, so it’s all very quiet at the moment,” Liz says. “Everything else has led to dead ends. “Both cats are microchipped, so if anything comes up, vet centres will know immediately that it is them.” Morris and Molly are not the only Springlands based cats to have disappeared unexpectedly; Rigby, a ginger and white scottish fold, is another cat from the suburb that has been missing for over three months. This follows multiple years of cat

Unlike Morris, Molly does not have a white stripe on her nose - however, she does have a “gigantic” bushy tail. Molly is much shyer than her older brother and is a classic tabby. attacks in Redwoodtown. Liz and Keith have been looking into other cases of missing cats in the hope that there might be a common explanation. “It’s so, so sad when one goes missing,” Liz says. “We miss them a lot.”

A Blenheim man was lucky not to be seriously injured after his vehicle was hit three times near Spring Creek on Friday morning. The driver was parked in a queue of traffic waiting to go past road works when a ute with large bull bars on the front drove into him from behind at speed. His vehicle was rammed into the car

in front of him, and then pushed out into the opposite lane, where it was hit again by an oncoming vehicle. The driver hobbled away from the accident and was taken to Wairau Hospital, where his body went into shock. He spent the afternoon at hospital where x-rays revealed nothing was broken. However he was battered and bruised and very sore all over.

Swim star’s last splash By Bill McElhinney Little Kirsty Broughton learned to swim at an early age. “When I was about four years old, Dad used to throw me off the front of the boat with my floaties on,” Kirsty says with a laugh. By age five, Kirsty was a member of the Blenheim Swimming Club, and already had a good grasp of the basics of swimming. That’s not surprising, as Dad Les was a swimmer and Mum Viv was also a coach. By age eight Kirsty was competing in swimming competitions and being coached by George Ashton. “That was in the old outdoor pool,” Kirsty says. “We would start training in October, twice a week, and the water was freezing – 16 to 17 degrees Celsius at the start of the season. “I would swim a kilometre just to warm up,” Kirsty says. Kirsty became a young champion swimmer, winning medals and competitions and by age 12 she was training five or six times a week, clocking up 30km in the pool. She stopped competing at age 17 and took up swim coaching, teaching youngsters on a voluntary basis. One of her early challenges was coaching her brother, Corey, who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident. Corey was training for the 1992 Disabled Games in Tendo, and with Kirsty’s help went on to win two gold medals. Drawing on her skills as a former top swimmer, Kirsty started professional coaching in 1996, becoming the head coach at the Blenheim pool. She also developed the popular Swim School and taught Kiwisport, a programme designed to get children participating in organised sport, at Marlborough schools. But now, after nearly 40 years of swimming, coaching and supervising, Kirsty has had her last day at the

Stadium 2000 pool. “It’s been great,” Kirsty says. “I’ve had such a wonderful group of people to work with but now I need more time for my family.” The biggest highlight for Kirsty has been seeing the thousands of people she has coached develop an important life skill. “Learning to swim is something

you can carry on for the rest of your life,” Kirsty says. Another highlight has been seeing the Stadium 2000 facility so well used by the community. Kirsty’s sister, Lyree, also works at the Stadium. “She came to help out part time and we ended up working together,” Kirsty says.

Now Kirsty Mattison is looking forward to having a break over the summer, doing some home renovations and enjoying her parttime hobby, abstract painting. “And I’m sure Mum will have me involved in some voluntary work,” Kirsty says. “But I don’t mind. It’s important to give back to the community.”

A historic Marlborough farm is up for sale for the first time in five generations. The 73-hectare Dunsandle Shades property on Hillocks Road, in the Wairau Plains was first bought by Robert Hillock back in 1866, the property has been farmed as a pastoral operation since and most recently ran as a 240 dairy cow farm, a rarity in the heavily vineyard planted region. The property is one of the few remaining bare pastoral blocks on the Wairau Plains.

Great place for green fingers By Bill McElhinney Spring has sprung and keen gardeners should get out to Linkwater on Saturday to see the huge variety of plants for sale at the annual Linkwater School Spring Fair. Linkwater School is located on Queen Charlotte Drive between Picton and Havelock, only 15 minutes from Havelock and 25 minutes from Picton. Linkwater folk help raise thousands of plants for the fair - vegetable seedlings, fruit plants, flowers, some fruit trees and other plants, including all your summer

veges, brassicas, and loads of gorgeous flowers for the garden. “The fair is an excellent opportunity to visit the Sounds village for a day,” Linkwater School fundraising committee member, Anna Polson, says. “Have a great cup of coffee and some food, buy some plants and still have time to go to the beach at Anakiwa. “It’s a fun day with all the old-fashioned games for children and families. “We’ll have a tug of war, bouncy castle, a barbecue, cake stall, art and craft stalls, raffles, trailer rides.

“There will also be Mr Whippy and plenty of other food items.” The Spring Fair/Fun Day at Linkwater has been going for about 25 years, and the funds raised are used to provide the best individualised programmes the school can provide for the students. “This means giving us funds for extra teaching time as well as being able to make sure our children don’t miss out on any opportunities made available to them,” Anna says. The Spring Fair starts on Saturday at 10am and runs until 2pm.

Linkwater School pupils Lee Taiapa (8), Dan Shaw (9), Arabella Venrooy (10) and Pip Lightfoot (9) with some of the spring plants that will be on sale at the annual school fair on Saturday.

Corner hedge is a hazard Dear Ed, The hedge on the corner of Percy and Dillon Streets is, in my opinion, a major hazard. As you travel south on Percy Street, at the intersection of Percy and Dillon Streets it is hard to see traffic coming from your right, sometimes at speed. By my estimation, the hedge protrudes at least 500mm over the footpath. You have to have half your vehicle over the Give Way before you can see if the road is clear. The hedge should be cut back to the boundary. There have been accidents in the past and many close calls at this intersection.

A serious accident is just a matter of time. Worried Motorist Blenheim Marlborough Roads replies: We have issued a letter to the land owner requiring him to trim back the hedge within the next 28 days. The hedge is planted on private property and is pushing out onto the road reserve. Given this, it is the responsibility of the landowner to trim/remove the hedge. Lucan Orchard Network Manager Marlborough Roads,

Dear Ed, The Post Shop in Redwoodtown closed over three months ago and NZ Post promised they would reopen in a new location. So what’s happened? Nothing. We’re still waiting for NZ Post to honour their promise. So c’mon NZ Post, there

are still quite a few of us (mainly oldies) who still want to post things like letters and parcels to families and grandchildren. Believe it or not, people still like getting something in the post that isn’t a bill! Pensioner Blenheim

Voter apathy a problem Dear Ed, The apathy of most voters is to be deplored. Do the 52 percent of voters who did not vote in the Marlborough District Council elections realise their vote might have resulted in much needed fresh faces on council? T h i r t y-t h ree-yea r old Scott Adams came within 13 votes of being elected in the Awatere-Wairau ward. Instead “same old, same old” were re-elected. What if another 10 or 20 per cent of those who did not vote

had thrown off their apathy and voted. All that was required was two minutes with a pen and sticking the envelope down. No stamp was needed. But one in two people in Marlborough were just too damned lazy. Did George Jean Nathan, American magazine editor 20th century, have it right when he said: “Bad officials are elected by good citizens who don’t vote.” Don Coyote Blenheim

Letters to the editor continued Don’t change speed limit Dear Ed, I read that there is a proposal to reduce the speed limit between Blenheim and Nelson from 100kmh to 80kmh to reduce the road toll. The journey from Renwick to Havelock can be travelled safely at 100kmh by any competent driver, which most of us are. The biggest problem is the slower driver near the centre line creating a long line of traffic behind, waiting for the slower driver to pull over so they can

pass. Lowering the speed limit will only increase the frustration these slower drivers cause, and may cause more accidents. Trucks are legal up to 90kmh. Reducing their speed will only increase journey times and the incentive to speed up to get to their destination on time. If this proposal goes ahead what it will create is more revenue from speeding fines. Kiwi Blenheim

Tarakihi troubles Dear Ed, Long time recreational fishers will have noted that while the governments (both Labour and National) closed the Marlborough Sounds blue cod fishery for several years from 2007, imposed a damaging slot rule which killed thousands of breeding female blue cod - all based on shonky NWA “science” - the real crisis was around tarakihi. In the 1970s-80s tarakihi were 50 per cent of food and line catch. Over-fishing and dumping by corporate company boats was

common. The latest Horizon Research poll shows Kiwis are not happy with a 10 per cent drop in the tarakihi quota and 70 per cent of New Zealanders want a drop of more that 40 per cent in commercial quota for tarakihi. Which raises the question, were ministers Guy and Carter, and now Nash, servants of the corporates while ignoring the health of the fishery and the public interest? Fish Head Blenheim

Crossroads – it’s a place for all to share Dear Ed, I am writing in response to the ongoing conversation in Text Talk in the Friday Sun regarding Crossroads on Redwood Street. I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to the conversation, and now offer my two cents worth as the manager of Johns Kitchen. There are some days I share the frustrations of drive-by two fingered typists who know the value of a good days work. Other days, when I take the time to sit out on a plastic seat in the winter sun, I can see some value in that, too. I understand that we don’t all share the same values and I believe we should have a right to express disgust in some way when offended. However I don’t think, as one Text Talk contributor does, that Crossroads is a disgrace to Blenheim. To me it’s more like a dusty little gust of grace blowing between a big red shed and a brave new world. It is really hard to define what Crossroads is, stuck somewhere between being a community cafe, a charity kitchen, a community centre, a drop in centre, a venue, a meeting space. The place carries both a social stigma and a divine stigma. I’m tempted to oblige one of our customers and open in the evenings as a punk rock venue. We could all make a song and dance about the state of the world as we each see it, and raise some sorely needed operating funds

while we are at it. Crossroads is a place to share food and conversation. The people of Marlborough provide the food, we prepare it, serve it, and our guests choose the price. It’s a pretty humble affair, it’s face to face and everyone is welcome to be involved in some way. We need cleaners and people who are good fund raisers. We need board members, hair dressers, vegetable peelers and people who kneel and pray. We will be running a November street appeal. This will be held on Friday, November 15, and is a new direction for us as we look to promote grassroots support. We are hoping to raise both social awareness and some of the funds needed to run Crossroads. Thanks to whoever fired off the first text. I think this is a conversation worth having. He appeared in the Blenheim Operatic Society’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, staged in the Marlborough Boys’ College Hall in 1979. “I was an 11-year-old in the kids’ choir,” Andrew says. He got involved with various Boys’ College productions, eventually leaving college to pursue working in photography in Wellington. But the pull of the theatre remained. During a stint in Wellington he worked with theatre groups helping stage such shows as Oklahoma, Carousel and other variety shows. He returned home in 1990 to have a summer break from city life, fell in love with his future wife, Anne, and stayed. He worked in photography labs and later established his own photography business, all the time having a strong involvement in musical theatre in Blenheim. “Over that period I was president of what is now Blenheim Musical Theatre, I think, five or six times,” he says. He also appeared in shows, usually in the background, but sometimes in a more prominent role, such as Mr Sowerberry the Undertaker in the 2016 production of Oliver Twist.

“I feel like I’ve done seven years work in the last three-and-ahalf years” His wife, Anne, is also a theatre stalwart, her most recent involvement being in the cast of the Blenheim Musical Theatre production of Mary Poppins. “You enjoy such camaraderie in the shows,” Andrew says.

“Every show is unique and you become part of a big family. And because you’ll never be all together again like this, it’s a special experience.” Andrew’s theatre management began when he took over the reins at the old Marlborough Civic Theatre following Christine Brown’s resignation. “I’d done everything I’d wanted to do as a photographer and by that time was self employed as a professional photographer looking for new challenge and opportunities. “Christine resigned, I applied - I found my niche,” Andrew says. Then in 2010 he left Blenheim to take up the role of chief executive officer at the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna, North Shore. The Centre is about three times larger than the old Marlborough Civic Theatre and caters about 50/50 to entertainment and conferencing. “It was a good grounding for me when I came back to Marlborough in 2015 to take on the role at the new theatre,” Andrew says. There were plenty of challenges ahead for the theatre’s new general manager. “The theatre was still being worked on when we opened in 2016,” Andrew says. “Our first show was Seven Days, so before the show we had to kick the builders out, clean the place, then get ready for the show. “The theatre seats still had the plastic covers on them! “We finished cleaning the theatre at 2am and were back there at dawn for the official Dawn Blessing. “The first six months were just a blur, with the occasional 22-hour day. “We had no front doors, we started at 7am and just kept going. And the box office was still at the old Civic Theatre, which caused a whole different set of problems with people being confused about where to go for bookings. “We had a whole lot of shows booked, so before each one we would

have to start cleaning up to make sure the place was spic and span for the hirers. “We often didn’t get home until midnight, after packing everything up so the builders could come back and continue work the next day.” There were also some tense moments with diva Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, who was booked to perform at a major gala opening performance in 2016. “She was concerned about the dust left behind by the builders, and threatened not to perform if everything wasn’t perfect. “But we persuaded her to trust us to have it right, and we did.” The theatre team also had to cope with new fire safety reg-

ulations, new health and safety regulations and learn to operate new systems. “And in the weeks following the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake we had sold-out touring shows but some people who had booked weren’t able to make it. “And we went out on stage before each show to reassure the audience that they would be safe in the event of another ‘quake – that the new theatre was built to cope with such events.” But the success of the new theatre was soon evident. In the first three months there were 17,000 audience attendances, compared to the 15,000 that attended the old theatre for the 2015 year. “We have the Royal New Zea-

land Ballet committed to come to Blenheim every year now, because of this facility,” Andrew says. “More and more conferences are coming to Blenheim because of our wonderful, central facilities, and local hirers have the theatre booked for six months of the year, so it is a well used community facility.” Andrew is proud to have left behind a great theatre run by a very well trained, committed and professional team, but now it’s time for a break. “I feel like I’ve done seven years work in the last three-and-a-half years,” he says with a grin. “It’s time to re-charge the batteries before I try something new!”

Kids Duathlon once again a speedy success By Aimee O’Hagan Last weekend’s beautiful, sunny weather made for the perfect opportunity to go for a run and a bicycle ride - and many youngsters from around Marlborough took up that opportunity. Approximately 320 children aged six to 18 were at Brancott Estate Vineyard on Sunday morning, taking part in the Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon 2019. The annual event, which has been held each year since 2007, gave children the opportunity to participate in one of two different courses, depending on their age and fitness level. For those who entered Course

1, the circuit included a 1km run, a 3km bike ride, and then another 1km sprint to the finish line. Course 2 was slightly more difficult, with participants running 2km, biking 5.5km, and then running an extra 1km. “Although the event is a Fairhall School fundraiser for various school camps, it’s a community event – so we wanted to get the whole community involved,” says Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon committee member, Julia O’Connell. “There was a selection of kids from all schools. “Every year we think the numbers are going to tail off,

but they never do!” Despite the event allowing for Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ College students to take part, the age of participants has always seemed to peak at about eight to ten years old. “It’s mainly primary schoolers that come along, but sometimes older kids join in and run alongside their younger siblings,” Julia mentions. “The duathlon is good for the primary school age group... It’s a great feeling for kids to complete the courses.” Many of the children also enjoy going for the “lovely bike ride” through the beautiful vineyards, which is included in the routes of both courses.

An enthusiastic team of Redwoodtown School students took part in the Harcourts Kids Duathlon on Sunday. Back row, from left: Paige Horne, Daniel O'Hagan, Brody Blick, and Sophie Stamp. Front row, from left: Sean O'Hagan, Zachary Roggeveen, and Alex Toms.

Austin Thomas successfully crosses the finish Jessica Mitchell gives a line! helper a high five. Leila Stone gives the Harcourts bear a big cuddle.

A story of clever innovation

New innovations in industrial plastics are being introduced to the world market every day, but did you know that many notable products were, and still are, being designed and manufactured right here in Blenheim?

Proud of our long term association with this innovative and dynamic company. Congratulations Mike and the Indac team on 40 years of design and manufacturing excellence.

Proudly supporting Indac Ltd as they celebrate 40 years in business

For 40 years Blenheim company INDAC Ltd has grown from humble beginnings, based at its Stuart Street premises, and is exporting its rotational and injection moulded products all over the world. The company’s name is an acronym from the words ‘innovation, design and construction’, which gives a clear indication of how the company operates. Thanks to the forward thinking of its founder and employees, INDAC Ltd has firmly established itself on the world stage bringing solutions to pretty much any challenge presented. The company’s story begins with founder Michael Hitchens. Originally from the UK Michael was lured to New Zealand by his uncle who, at the time, had a paint company based in Renwick. Michael worked for him before going into making rubber gloves which is what got him started. He later went on to become the first person to mould a smooth mussel float because; “If submarines

don’t have ribs on them, then these won’t either”, he notably declared. Michael’s passion for problem solving and ability to think up the previously unthinkable, enabled him to bring innovation to the forefront of his operations and has seen INDAC Ltd contribute a vast array of products to industries such as agriculture, aquaculture, marine, viticulture, government, science, waste management, construction and plumbing. Today, INDAC Ltd employs more than 20 staff who together contribute more than 200 years of experience in plastics engineering. Michael remains at the forefront of the company, but managing the operations is his right-hand man, general manager Graeme Rickard. Plastics engineering is an industry that Graeme has worked in since the age of 16. He’s been involved with the company for 12 years and is part of the “depth of experience” that INDAC

Ltd is well regarded for. “Right across our team we have people who specialise in plastics, design, engineering, manufacturing and prototyping. “We have a great mix of highly experienced employees who have been here long term, through to youth who bring with them fresh enthusiasm. We have guys who have worked in nuclear power plants, the aeronautic industry and very skilled draughtsmen,” he says. The company’s ethos is a simple one – “We design and create! If it’s something we haven’t done before, we learn very quickly and don’t know what the word ‘no’ is,” Graeme says. “We spend around 25 percent of our income on research and development which is huge for a business. But it’s how our business is driven. “If a customer walks in with an idea in their head, everyone here works together to find the solution. Innovation is our passion and it’s what drives us,” he says.

Congratulations to Indac on 40 years in business from all the team at BlueBerryIT. Looking after your technology needs for decades to come. support@blueberryit.co.nz | Ph 03 577 9530

Thinking outside the box A day in the INDAC Ltd office begins with the routine visit by company founder Michael Hitchens. Despite being ‘semi-retired’, Michael is still heavily involved in the innovation side of the operations and likes to promote an inclusive working environment where everyone can provide input, general manager Graeme Rickard says. “Michael thinks so far out of the square… it’s his passion,” Graeme smiles. “I enjoy that side too – we all do! “It’s the fun part, being able to take a basic idea that hasn’t even been scribbled onto a piece of paper yet, and bringing the team together to work on a design,” he says. It’s by working alongside clients and developing new innovative products which has helped the company to flourish over the past 40 years. Some examples of rotational moulded products designed and manufactured by INDAC Ltd include buoys, storage tanks, toolboxes, bins, trays, free standing signs and water troughs. Vineyard net reels and post caps, emergency kit boxes, salmon feeders, bait stations, multi-purpose spill kits and new tanks for rural fire trucks are also examples of what the company has produced. Injection moulding is the other manufacturing process used by the company. In it, plastics of varying natures are heated and injected

into a mould under incredibly high pressures and in a faster, more efficient way. While INDAC Ltd recognises that speed of manufacture is key for many of their clients, Graeme and the team are also extremely conscious of the environmental impact. “There’s a big focus on reducing plastic use which at times sheds a negative light on the plastics engineering industry. What people may not realise is that it’s also a big focus for us. “We take our responsibility as a manufacturer very seriously by recycling 99.7 percent of all of our waste. We do this either in house or we ship it out and have it brought back to use for our new products,” Graeme says. With the environment in mind, this has led the company to look at a number of environmental issues faced by communities, with one in particular being water storage. INDAC Ltd has specially designed its SlimTanks range which fit under eaves of homes and sheds to collect rain water overflow. These tanks can be coupled in a series for more storage capability and are ideal for the residential market. “We are also working on a new development in the area of water treatment which is very interesting and we expect will be completed by the end of the year,” Graeme says.

In addition to designing and manufacturing client-led productions, did you know that INDAC Ltd also provides the following services? Speedway opens with a bang By Celeste Alexander Eastern States Speedway’s track came alive on Saturday night after a six month slumber to welcome in the beginning of the 2019/2020 racing season. The crowd cheered as all drivers advanced on the track for the grand parade before the atmosphere hushed for a minute silence in memory of club life member Elwyn (Snow) Corbett, who sadly passed away during the off season. First out the gate to kick off racing were the streetstocks which looked every bit shiny, clean and straight. But it was short lived as the moment the green flag dropped, it was all on. Second out were the productions, which were also looking nice and polished, but the track’s wet clay soon took care of that and before long, drivers were focused on the finish line. The ministocks were another class of drivers who were chomping at the bit to get going and from the get go they were chasing the opening night’s double points. The first bit of drama of the night wasn’t from the streetstocks or stockcars as one would expect, but this time the saloons. Locals Daryl Martin and Rob Flood were joined by two Nelson super saloons but after a mechanical misadventure in the early laps, three went nose to tail. What looked like a drive shaft dropped out from under Rob’s saloon, bringing him to a slow halt at turn one, lap two. Nelson’s Shane

Carey in the 12N couldn’t avoid him and went straight up behind, followed by Daryl. The three had to take a few moments to get untangled before Rob was towed off. Daryl was the only man remaining on the track and despite the cloud of smoke billowing out from behind him, he roared through the final laps. Rob was able to return to the track for the final race thanks to Shane who loaned parts to him after his own car was put out for the evening. This earned Shane the certificate for Driver of the Night. The stockcars were another class which didn’t hold back, and

although there wasn’t a lot of hitting there was an obvious competition between lead drivers Tim Alexander, his younger brother Scott Alexander and teenager Leighton Stanton. Tim pushed through the field, nudging aside Scott and Leighton to take all race leads, leaving Scott and Leighton to tussle over second and third place. If you remember the Titans stockcar team, it was a reminder of the days when Leighton’s father Brian Stanton raced with the Alexander brothers. For those who love the risk-taking sport of sidecar racing, they

were treated to a taste of it with two Nelson riders making the trip over to race with 7e’s Knuckle Hill and Daniel Smith and 77e’s Neil Bruce and Kelvin Reiher. By the end of the evening it was a case of ‘pin your ears back’ and hold on’ as sparks flew, panels bent and new paint work was scratched. It’s certainly shaping up to be an exciting season ahead! Eastern States Speedway’s next race meeting is November 9 with the Stockcar Battle of the Vines round 1 and Streetstock Ford vs Holden bragging rights features.
