Scouting the sea By Aimee O’Hagan Summer is still a month away, but the surf life saving season has already begun. The official opening day for the Rarangi Surf Life Saving Club was held two weekends ago – from now on, local surf lifeguards will only continue to get busier as the weather gets warmer and Whites Bay becomes more and more crowded. It’s already been a big year for the club, who have trained all through winter to be completely prepared for the season ahead. They need to have their game together for the upcoming months, and require a skilled and efficient leader to keep them focused. That’s the role of Taylor Rogers, who has been part of the Whites Bay-based club since she was just 14 years-old. The young Marlburian not only acts as the RSLSC manager, but also as one of the club’s four patrol captains. Continued on page 2. Taylor Rogers is a dedicated volunteer at Marlborough’s Rarangi Surf Life Saving Club.

Surf life saving captain passionate about her role at local club Continued from page 1. “I used to be a competitive swimmer for a number of years, and one day I saw the Surf Life Saving Club training in the pool next to us,” Taylor says of how she got involved with the club. “It looked like they were having a lot more fun, so I jumped ship from competitive swimming to being a part of RSLSC!” Since that moment 11 years ago, Taylor has never looked back. Her highly important role at the club involves organising all the patrols and lifeguards, making sure people get through the “refresher programme” each year, and sorting out uniforms and merchandise. For the 25 year-old, saving lives is a passion. Not only is lifeguarding a way of keeping fit, strong, and on-top-of-hergame, but it is also an opportunity to meet new people. “It gives you really good life skills and people management skills,” Taylor says. “For me, the best parts of being a member of the club are the people we meet, the experiences, and giving back to the community. “Having that responsibility as a teenager makes you a bit more mature for your age.” In fact, children can get involved with surf life saving from an age as

young as five years-old. According to Taylor, the club holds programmes for children aged five to twelve and aged 12 to 14. After completing the second programme at age 14, the youngsters become fully qualified lifeguards. “There are so many opportunities getting involved with the club offers,” Taylor says. “I’ve enjoyed my time so much

with the club and the experiences I’ve gained from it.” At the beginning of 2019, she herself was selected as one of 15 surf lifeguards from around NZ to take part in ‘BP Leaders for Life’: a programme which holds five surf life saving workshops around the country, across an 11 month time period. “There are some people in our club

that have been surf lifeguards for 40 to 50 years,” Taylor says. “Not just at our own club, but at surf life saving clubs around the country in general. “People don’t realise the amount of hard work they’re putting in behind the scenes. “If it wasn’t for them, the club wouldn’t be as successful as it is today.”

It’s important to keep safe on the sand and in the water during the summer season. Pay attention to the following tips for advice on how to stay safe when you take a trip to the beach over the upcoming months: 1. Remember to choose a lifeguarded beach and always swim between

the red and yellow flags. 2. Don’t overestimate your swimming ability or underestimate the sea’s conditions – if in doubt, stay out of the water. 3. Always keep a close eye on young children that are in or near the water – keep them within arm’s reach.

4. Never swim alone – get a friend to swim alongside you. 5. Make sure you read and understand the safety signs. If you are unsure of what they mean, ask a surf lifeguard. 6. Take care to look out for rip currents, as they can pull you away

from shore. If you are caught in a rip, remember the three R’s: Relax and float, Raise your hand, and Ride the rip. 7. Always wear a life jacket when fishing or in a boat. 8. Be sun smart: slip, slop, slap, and wrap!

According to Surf Life Saving New Zealand, there are over 4900 surf lifeguards across New Zealand. They spend more than 237,000 hours patrolling beaches each season, which resulted in approximately 702 rescues from life-threatening situations last summer. Photo supplied.

Feared WWII aircraft has new local owners By Celeste Alexander Blenheim men Mark O’Sullivan and Ronan Harvey purchased one of the most featured WWII fighter aircraft, the Yak-3 known as ‘Steadfast’, and it’s currently being readied for its debut at the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow at Easter next year. Co-owner Mark is rapt to have the aircraft in New Zealand and can’t wait to show her off at Wanaka. “This aircraft has it all with her beautiful lines betraying

what can be brutal performance. The addition of a great smoke system means this aircraft will be something of a show-stopper at Wanaka,” he says. The Steadfast is the latest warbird fighter aircraft to find a new home in New Zealand, having arrived from Australia in September. The Yak-3 was feared during WWII due to their high speed and manoeuvrability, making them ideal in dog-fights. In the early 2000’s a decision

E L A S R O F

was made to build brand new Yak-3s based on the original prototype, this time fitted with powerful Pratt and Whitney R-2000 radial engines. The new aircraft were built in Romania and were snapped up by eager Warbird aircraft owners around the world. ‘Steadfast’ was exported to the United States in the mid-2000s, embarking on an illustrious career at the famous Reno Air Races. During that time the aircraft picked up nine world speed and

climbing records, including reaching 655km/h over a 3km course in Utah. In 2013 the aircraft moved to Australia where it has been operating until this latest move across the Tasman. ‘Steadfast’ will be one of two Yak-3s performing at Wanaka. Graeme Frew’s Russian fighter ‘Full Noise 35’ has been a regular at Wanaka since 2012 and is one of several Warbird aircraft which will be available for joy rides over the Easter weekend.

Students from Marlborough Boys' College carried out their annual Grundy Run tradition yesterday afternoon, running through the Marlborough Girls' College clad only in their socks and jocks.

MBC Grundy Run returns

By Celeste Alexander It was a relatively standard school day at Marlborough Girls’ College yesterday, until a parade of Marlborough Boys’ College senior students ran through wearing only their socks and jocks. Why? It’s the infamous Grundy Run tradition where students mark the end of their school year by running through MGC wearing their underwear. This year the group painted themselves head to foot and despite Police and college staff patrolling the grounds, they slipped through an unmanned carpark to begin their prank. Within seconds shrieks and laughter could be heard as the boys gathered to deliver a haka performance before they ran back out onto McLauchlan Street. It’s an annual event that’s condemned by staff at both colleges and has been for many years, however it did not deter the pranksters. “Let’s go again… c’mon quick before they stop us,” some of the students were heard saying afterwards. But it wasn’t long before they were turned around and given their marching orders.

Paint and suspenders seemed to be the theme for the Marlborough Boys' College Grundy Run. W h e n o n ly t h e b e s t W i l l d o !

Sam’s Shakespearean journey By Aimee O’Hagan Blenheim 17 year-old, Sam Lewis, loves bringing the works of William Shakespeare to life on stage. In fact, the Marlborough Boys’ College student will be heading to London in July next year to do just that, performing alongside 23 other young New Zealanders at the famous Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. But it’s been a long process to get to this point. Earlier this year, the Marlborough Boys’ College student took part in the annual Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Regional University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival (SGCNZ Regional UOSWSF), which was held at Queen Charlotte College. Sam performed a scene from Hamlet alongside Marlborough Girls’ College pupil, Samantha Mayne. He was ecstatic when he was selected to go straight through as a direct entry student to SGCNZ’s National Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP) for an eight

day course in Wellington, which was held from September 29 to October 7. Out of the 48 students selected to attend NSSP, only half were chosen to go on and be part of SGCNZ’s Young Shakespeare Company (YSC), which is the final stage of the competition. This particular group of students will keep Sam company on the trip to London next year. “I was out in the paddock with Dad, when all of a sudden my phone rang,” Sam explains of the moment he discovered that he had made it. “It was Dawn Sanders (CEO of SGCNZ). “The reception is a bit dodgy in Springlands so when Dawn told me that I had been selected for YSC, it took me a moment to register what she had said. “When I realised what she had said, I was so excited!” For him, the chance to perform in the world-renowned theatre is absolutely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“I was over the moon when I found out,” he says. “So were my parents. “I called my nana and told her that I had got into YSC, and she was so happy she cried!” Sam will be in the UK for approximately three weeks; spending two weeks rehearsing for the performance and another week touring other areas of the UK, such as Stratford Upon Avon. For him, the primary goal ahead is to fundraise the $9,000 required. This covers the cost of flights, accomodation, tours, and food. In terms of fundraising, Sam doesn’t have a completely set plan yet. “It will most likely be the usual,” he says. “I’ll do some sausage sizzles, bake sales... “I would really appreciate some support – there’s a lot of hard work ahead!” To f i n d o ut m o r e a b o ut Sa m’s jou r ney overseas or to help him raise funds, email sam.lewis@windowslive.com.

Sam Lewis is excited to head to London next year and perform at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre as part of the Young Shakespeare Company.

Camp adventures inspire youth By Community Constable Russ Smith Flying through the air attached to a cable and designing a flying contraption to be piloted off the wharf at Lake Rotoiti, were some of the fun activities enjoyed by Year 7 and 8 students who took part in a leadership camp last weekend. The local Blue Light Ventures team has been running leadership camps for Marlborough students every year since 2003. The small committee is made up of both Police members and members of the public with an interest in providing youth services for Marlborough. Up to 40 students are selected for each camp, with invitations sent to every Marlborough school with year 7 and 8 students, from Rai Valley to Ward and Picton to Wairau Valley invited to attend. While several camps in the early years were held at Kiwi Ranch

in the Marlborough Sounds, the camp is held at Rotoiti Lodge these days and is called a ‘Blue Light Alternative Strategies for Teenagers’ (B.L.A.S.T.) camp. All the activities appear to be fun, but are carefully crafted to encourage constructive fun for up to 40 youths. The programmed activities are designed to challenge youths to work beyond their comfort zones, understand the benefits of team-work, to become more confident and to demonstrate leadership skills. The programme is also designed to build a positive relationship between youths and police. The students began their adventure after travelling by bus to the lodge where a briefing was held before ‘ice-breaker’ games were held. Other challenges the young people attending the camp faced included a high ropes event called the ‘Flying

Kiwi,’ where a harnessed participant is shot into the air attached to a cable, something that a number of youth bravely undertook while overcoming their fears. On Saturday, the youths are in one of four teams, each with a team leader. They rotate through a whole day worth of challenges, with small breaks in between the challenges. Amongst the challenges, teams were tasked with creating their own unique ‘birdman’ construction. This is a flying contraption that must be ‘piloted’ by a team member off a wharf and into Lake Rotoiti. Teams were awarded prizes for the best birdman design and for the most creative take-off and landing. The teams also undertook a low ropes course, challenging their skills in balance and team work. In the years since the first camps were held, the Blue Light committee have seen a number of grown-up

A happy group of Blue Light camp participants. Photo provided

participants who have expressed how fondly they remember their camp experiences, how it positively changed their view of and relationship with police, and in some cases, how it gave them the confidence to pursue a career they thought was out

of their reach. One of our serving Blenheim Police members remembers their positive experiences at a Marlborough Blue Light camp, so who knows how many potential Police recruits have been inspired!

Dear Ed, Is it surprising that there was such a low turnout of voters in the recent local body elections? I, for one, have never been to a council meeting and I expect it is the same for many other people. I don’t know many of those who stood for election, so it made it hard to vote! Be Reasonable Blenheim

Proposed 80km is no answer to the road toll First, it is scandalous that the bureaucrats who rule us have done nothing for three long years about putting in a 40km speed limit outside schools for the appropriate hours, along SH6. Talk about ivory towers. Next, their proposed 80km limit for the whole of that highway is no answer to the road toll; while realistically there is little that can be done to keep off the road those

psychologically – even pathologically – unfit, for the vast majority of drivers and riders, going at a speed appropriate to all the conditions, plus being courteous, means safety will be preserved. I say this because of 30 years in the Fire Service, with all the attendance at smashes that this involved; and, way back, I was coroners’ officer assisting with post mortem examinations

of accident victims, so I’ve no starry-eyed view of human behaviour. Finally, there is an urgent need for roadside drug testing, drug addled morons being the latest menace to the public. Forensic results of such fatalities are not given to us till years later of course – easier to blame speed. Bill Holvey

is it costing? It’s no wonder they are going broke as they’re overstaffed! TV Critic

‘Local legend’ receives special Maori award By Aimee O’Hagan Friday night was no ordinary evening for Blenheim woman, Rita Powick. The Blenheim School resource teacher was “stunned” and “absolutely humbled” to have been awarded the title of Te Pataka o Wairau Local Legend at the Te Pataka o Wairau Maori Night Market, which was held at Seymour Square. According to spokesperson, Ranae Niven, the award acknowledges and celebrates Rita’s outstanding voluntary contribution to the Marlborough community. “Rita’s passion for enhancing Te

Reo Maori is well known,” Ranae says. “Her skills and knowledge were pivotal for the establishment of Te Pa Wananga, the bilingual unit at Omaka Marae. “Her leadership with Manu Korero competitions, Te Ataarangi classes, Taiopenga (which was celebrated last week), and our regional kapa haka competitions – plus many, many more – is testament to her commitment to Te Reo Maori.” Ranae says the award also thanks Rita for her role as a trustee for Waikawa Marae, for being part of community organisation Te

Matawai, for taking a “Kaitaiki role when it comes to our environment”, and much more. “I’m blown away to have recieved this precious award,” Rita says, with happy tears in her eyes. “I do what I do because of the people... The full credit should go to them. “By helping others, I’ve gained so much more than I’ve given. “I’m surrounded by so many fabulous people and I’m a very lucky person.” According to Ranae, Rita is loved and respected by all who know her.

“Where would we be without those ‘givers’ in our community, those who work so tirelessly?” Ranae asks.

“Rita has been – and always will be – a role model.”

CarFit workshop Make sure you and your car are ready for summer road trips by attending the next free AA CarFit workshop in Blenheim, on Thursday December 5. CarFit is a free community education programme for older drivers designed to measure how well people fit in their vehicles. Experienced CarFit facilitators show drivers how to set up their car so they are in the best position physically, have the greatest range of vision and can access all the controls. Marlborough District Council Road Safety Co-ordinator Robyn Blackburn

says setting your vehicle up correctly is not something we usually think about, but is really important - especially as we get older. “Modern vehicles have different adjustments they didn’t have 50 years ago, and this programme aims to teach older drivers how to operate those safety features and feel more confident and comfortable while driving,” Robyn says. “Seat belt and headrest height are obvious, and the tilt of the steering wheel and its distance from your chest is particularly important. “The steering wheel is the home of the airbag and

is designed to deploy into the trunk rather than the face, so correct steering wheel setup makes a big difference to airbag performance.” Getting “CarFit” is particularly beneficial for older drivers - our bodies become much more fragile as we age and being in a correctly set-up car helps drivers stay safe and feel more confident behind the wheel, Robyn says. If you are interested in taking part in the next Carfit workshop on Thursday December 5, please contact Robyn on 03 520 7400. PBA.

Man behind the engines Every old piece of machinery has a story to tell and Brayshaw Park is home to many historical pieces which have helped to shape Marlborough over the years. But what of the people who look after these machines and what are their stories? Reporter Celeste Alexander met with Marlborough Vintage and Farm Machinery Society member and retired engineer Ian Le Grice who, at 92, is still taking care of the big diesel engines at the park. In 1980, Ian became involved with the Marlborough Vintage and Farm Machinery Society after retiring to Blenheim with wife Estelle. Even in retirement, Ian couldn’t sit idle so he set about establishing the ‘Engine Shed’ at Brayshaw Park, acquiring the displays, setting them up and running them on open days for the public to view. He was also involved in establishing the Denton Building where the main collection is housed. Some of these big diesels are from the Picton Freezing Works, the airbase and local factories Ian says, while affectionately patting them as he walks through the shed. In fact, during Ian’s time with the Society, he can claim to have worked on most of the machines at the park. The enjoyment is evident on Ian’s face as he demonstrates one of the engines, pressing an electric ignition button and grinning ear to ear as the huge engine shakes itself awake. But where did this passion originate? Ian was born in a little bach at Piha Beach in 1927 and was one of four children. Growing up Ian “played around” with motorcycles and showed a strong interest in machinery, so it was no surprise when at age 15 he embarked on an apprenticeship as a diesel engineer at the Devonport Naval Dock Yard in Auckland. “My interest just came to me naturally, not influenced by anyone really. “Dad was a farmer and went on to start the Otahuhu bus company in Auckland, but for me, I was attracted to the naval dockyards to work on the big ship engines,” he says. Ian joined the Roose Shipping Company and worked his way to second engineer. The company purchased an American Landing Ship Tank No.283 which Ian says was used during World War Two’s Normandy Landings, and

renamed as ‘Rawhiti’. Ian worked on it for a variety of missions including to retrieve surplus war equipment from the Pacific Islands that was left behind as America and its allies advanced towards Japan. For the next five years onboard the Rawhiti, Ian got to see a lot of this part of the world during trips which took him to Sydney and other parts of Australia where they would off-load or pick up freight to transport to other destinations around the Pacific. “We transported many different things from railway sleepers and cattle to thousands of 44-gallon drums all over the place,” he says. While working for the shipping company Ian married and decided on a change of pace to focus on starting a family. He found work in the workshop with Mason Brothers who were the biggest engineering firms in Auckland at the time. He was working on mostly General Motors engines for forestry

“My interest just came to me naturally, not influenced by anyone really” and marine customers. In 1968 Ian, his wife and four children moved to Christchurch to become the South Island sales manager for Mason Bros, then two years later he started his own business selling steel. In 1978 Ian sold his business and retired to Blenheim. It will be 40 years in December since Ian joined the Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery Society and even though he admits he’s not “so quick on my feet” nowadays, he still helps

Pets day a fun event for students By Aimee O’Hagan All kinds of animals – from goats to sheep, dogs to cows, and guinea pigs to chickens – could be found at Rapaura School on Friday for the primary school’s annual pets day. Not only this, but taking a step into the school hall revealed tables covered in colourful arts and crafts, delicious baked goods, and even beautiful plants. The pets and various other creations were there to be judged, with some going on to be awarded highly commended, or a placing of third, second, or first in their age group. The judging was followed by a wearable arts fashion show and the day was concluded by a well-deserved sausage sizzle lunch. “The pets day is just one of those

traditional events we hold each year,” says Rapaura School principal, Michelle Spencer. “A really nice thing is that some of the judges have been affiliated with our school for many, many years. “It’s an awesome family day, and a great day for year eight’s too, who will no longer attend Rapaura School next year. “It highlights values of creativity; regardless of learning abilities, you can excel.” She says the event is seen by the school as a warm-up for the Marlborough A&P Show, which will this year be held on November 8 and 9, at the A&P Showgrounds, on the corner of Maxwell and Alabama Roads. “It’s an opportunity for students to really show their skills!”

Constable’s cyber-safety message By Celeste Alexander Kids spend a lot of time online, which has its benefits, but there also many hidden dangers which can affect children as young as three or four. This is the message of school community officer, Constable Josh Reidie, who spends a lot of his time talking with students at local schools about cyber-safety. Josh and his colleagues will also be delivering a cyber-safety set at the up and coming Clued-up Kids programme which is held annually in Blenheim for primary school students. The programme is aimed at years 5 and 6 students and focuses on a wide range of safety issues around cycling, boating, trains, quadbikes, fire, earthquake and dogs, to name a few. Every school in Marlborough has signed up to this year’s programme which starts November 11 and will see around 600 students take part during the week. “Road safety is always a focus of Clued-up Kids but with nearly all children having access to a device at home, cyber-safety is an important topic to address,” Josh says. “And if a child doesn’t have a device of their own, they can still gain access when at a friend’s house or on their parents’ device.

“It’s my role to try and guide the students and make them aware of things like not giving out personal information, which is what we will be talking about at Clued-up Kids,” he says. When asked what some of the main cyber-safety issues are faced by children, Josh says grooming and bullying are big ones. “Children can be online with someone they think is their own age, when in fact they are adults, and online bullying is contributing to our high suicide and mental health rates. “It also takes away their innocence so it’s important to give them the right tools so they won’t become victims, or make victims of others,” he says. For parents wanting advice on keeping their children safe while online, Josh says having control of their internet use is key. “Keep devices out of bedrooms and limit the time spent on them. “Also, limit the number of apps they use and be aware of them. Become a friend or a follower on those apps not to have conversations, but to keep an eye on things like bullying. “It’s also a good idea to make a contract with children, and include in it that if you don’t have access to their computer to check

what they’ve been doing, they don’t have it. “And importantly, don’t allow photos or personal information to be used by your children,” he says. While he can’t provide specifics, Josh says issues he has seen locally include young people in relationships sending nude photos to one another, then after a breakup those photos are forwarded to others. “Encouraging others to bully and to have fights with young people and even going to their homes to harass them there occurs. “Marlborough is no different to other towns, these things do take place. It’s just not always in the public domain, but parents and children need to know how to stay safe,” Josh says. Another of Josh’s messages is “stop, block and tell”. “Stop, think before you send it. Would it be something you send to your grandparents? Would you tell them they are fat, ugly, to harm themselves or send them a nude pic? If the answer’s no then don’t do it! “Block, don’t retaliate and tell someone you trust. “You can visit or contact netsafe. org.nz, call 111 or 105 for help or speak to trusted adults,” Josh says.

School community officer, constable Josh Reidie, and his colleagues will be delivering some important messages during a Cyber-Safety Set at the up and coming Clued-up Kids programme for years 5 and 6 students.

Clued-up K ids pro gramme is a collaborative community approach to child safety delivered in an interactive way by agencies and organisations in the Marlborough

Child Safety Group. It was piloted in Marlborough in 2006 developed from a programme known to be in place in Scotland. All year 5 and 6 pri-

mary school students are offered this opportunity which is designed to give children aged 10-12 years’ experience from ‘real life’ scenarios and learn how to react in a safe manner.

Omaka Aerodrome is a hidden gem in Marlborough, but is well known on the world stage. With its grassy runways, wide open spaces, world class restoration projects on classic aircraft, and one-of-a-kind aeroplanes, it’s a buzzing community. For aviation enthusiasts, you can’t beat the ideal flying weather that the region offers. With facilities like this, it’s no surprise that a small town like Blenheim has individuals from all over the globe coming to check out its heritage. For Classic Aero Machinery Service’s Tony Wytenburg, the Omaka Aerodrome location is essential to his aircraft restoration work. The several grass runways provide ideal conditions for the many classic aircraft which are built and tested by Tony and

If you haven’t stocked up on sunscreen yet, you might want to add it to the shopping list as temperatures are forecasted to climb as high as 30degrees in Marlborough this weekend. Metservice are forecasting temperatures to reach the mid to late twenties for eastern and inland areas this weekend, while some places in Marlborough and Canterbury may hit 30. A large high developing in the Tasman Sea should bring a fine weekend to most of the country and steer warm air originating over Australia towards New Zealand. MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey says, “The average daily maximum for most places during November is around 20 degrees, so this will be significantly warmer than normal for this time of year. The fine and warm weather comes after some cooler weather before the weekend with a couple of fronts moving north over the country. “A front with a strong southwest change moves north over

the South Island on Wednesday bringing a period of rain, with possible thunderstorms and hail in the east as the southwest change moves through. “The strong southwest change is likely to move through Dunedin around 2pm on Wednesday and should reach Christchurch between 6 and 7pm. It’s forecast to bring a short sharp burst of

rain and a significant dip in temperature as it moves through,” says Glassey. The front weakens as moves over the North Island early Thursday but will still bring some strong winds and showers to few places, before the ridge of high pressure moves on towards the weekend. Most centres should be dry for Halloween on Thursday evening.

Trust fund will help youngsters get to Bay Marlborough’s Mistletoe Foundation has successfully raised a $300,000 capital fund to ensure money is available to send school children to camps at Mistletoe Bay in the Marlborough Sounds. The foundation recently held a dinner at the bay, in Queen Charlotte Sound near Onahau Bay, that raised $115,000 to complete its fundraising. The dinner was created by the team at Arbour restaurant, and hosted by the Mistletoe Charitable Foundation’s patron Dame Lowell Goddard QC, along with the Mistletoe Bay Trust’s patrons Sir Stephen and Lady Tindall. About 40 people gathered in Blenheim to experience “Magic at Mistletoe”, taking a Marlborough Tour Company bus to Picton, and then the Marlborough Tour Compa-

ny vessel Odyssea to Mistletoe Bay. They dined in a room lined with ferns and fairy lights, with wine provided by Hunters and Seresin Estate. Sir Stephen spoke to the guests about some of his experiences with the New Zealand bids to win the America’s Cup, which he currently heads. Dame Lowell encouraged people to donate to the foundation, saying she had seen the irreversible effects of terrible events on young people’s lives, but she had also seen the power of positive events, “incredible effects that can be wrought on young people’s lives in this sort of environment.” By the end of the evening, more than $115,000 had been raised for the Mistletoe Charitable Foundation. Chairman Simon Heath says this

means the foundation has completed its capital fundraising, and will now focus on managing the fund, with the help of investment advisors Craigs, and distributing scholarships each year to students through the Mistletoe Bay Trust. “Principals of schools sending students to camps at Mistletoe Bay are now assured of being able to access help for students who might not otherwise be able to afford to go to camp and have the Mistletoe Bay experience,” Simon says. “As a school principal myself, I know that the time spent at the bay on camp, doing activities with classmates and learning valuable lessons, can be life-changing for our young people, and they need that experience now more than ever. “Everyone should be able to have Mistletoe charitable foundation Patron Dame Lowell Goddard with that Mistletoe Bay experience.” foundation chairman Simon Heath.

Sharing talents for fun and friendship By Bill McElhinney They call themselves “Orphans,” but they certainly aren’t abandoned or homeless. So it seems a strange name for a bunch of blokes who meet together regularly to play music and enjoy friendships. It all started in the 1856 in New Zealand when a group of actors, musicians, literary and art people decided they should form a club where they could play up and entertain one another away from the glare of the public. It was called the Savage Club after Richard Savage, a not so famous poet and dramatist who lived 100 years before. Within 30 years clubs had been formed in in Dunedin, Auckland and Invercargill. At their peak there were 46 clubs with a total membership of 5000. Such was the growth that they had closed membership and a breakaway group was formed under the name of “Orphan’s Clubs.”

The Blenheim club was formed in 1972 with around 40 members, and has provided a facility and venue for a wide variety of entertainers to perform in front of their fellow club members and guests. Two of the founding members, Ken Ham and Peter Scammell are still active club members and Ken is also the current national president, currently busy visiting clubs around the country. The Blenheim Orphans Club’s main focus is music performance, with regular club night concerts being held as well as variety concerts for invited friends and family members. From its beginning the club has supported and encouraged a huge number of musicians and entertainers, young and old alike to develop their art and confidence. Club members regularly entertain at various venues around the province and are particularly popular at local retirement villag-

es, where they entertain around 35 times a year. “People of all ages can come and join in at our regular club nights, which are held at the Redwoodtown School Hall every three weeks,” club member, John

Henry, says. If you’d like to share your talent in a supportive and non-judgemental environment, give John a call on 578 8789, Ken Ham on 972 0426 or Leon Broadbridge on 577 6695.

keeping those ‘nasties’ away from your home...

Hungry invaders When you hear stories such as the largest ant’s nest ever found being 3,700 miles wide, discovered in Argentina, it might make you feel a little better about your average home and garden ant colonies. But no matter the size of the colony, or the number of the ants marching across your kitchen bench, they are still a nuisance. To solve an ant problem it’s not just eliminating the ones you can see, you actually have to get rid of the ones you can’t see. Sounds a little backwards but it’s a fact! And it all boils down to the queen who is laying all the eggs and reproducing more and more ants. This queen needs to be fed as she doesn’t leave her nest, which is the role of the

workers. This is why every tiny crumb, grain of sugar or food left out, attracts the attention of the ants scurrying about looking for a food source. Your next point of action will be to find where the ants are coming from. Once an ant finds a food source in your home, it will return to its nest with the food while leaving a scent trail behind it. This trail will lead fellow worker ants to the food, and before you know it your food

cupboard could be crawling with hundreds, if not thousands, of the tiny menaces. Rather than killing the worker ants which you can see, you can either place ant bait along the trail you have found in the hope that the workers will find it and carry it back to the nest to feed the queen, ultimately killing her. The other alternative is to call in a pest control expert who can do this for you. After laying bait or having your home sprayed, be patient as it may take several days or even weeks to kill the queen. There could also be several colonies. Don’t make it easy for ants to find food in your home, and if you need advice or help, speak to the professionals.

Outstanding Mako win Finals victory a first for Tasman Mako In a sea of red and blue at Trafalgar Park in Nelson, the Tasman Mako finally took their place at the pinnacle of New Zealand domestic rugby on Saturday night. The Mako beat Wellington 31-14 to be crowned Mitre 10 Premiership champions for the first time. The Mako were unbeaten throughout the season. The final win didn’t come easy for the home team, with Wellington pushing them hard right to the end. In the final minute wing Will Jordan raced away off a counter-attacking break to seal the win in the 79th minute. After the game, Tasman co-coach

Andrew Goodman said the result was “just pure happiness”. Goodman said the win was a huge boost for aspiring rugby players throughout the region. “It’s massive for the kids coming through, both sides of the hill, to know they can stay here and be part of the best team in New Zealand, go on to play Super Rugby and on to the All Blacks.” Tasman captain David Havili said it was hard to describe the emotions after the victory. “We’ve been building for the past few years now, we just grew a culture where we love turning up each day, love coming to work with

a smile on our face.” Wyatt Crockett, who was playing in his last game, said the win ranked right up there with his Super Rugby titles for the Crusaders and All Blacks World Cup win in 2015. “It’s right up the top, for a little wee province like this one, we punch above our weight ... to get something so many people have worked so hard for is very special for our community.” “I’ve absolutely loved playing with this bunch of young men, they make me feel young even though I’m not. It’s been a pleasure to come back and play for Tasman the last couple of years, I’ve enjoyed every

minute of it.” The win came after the Mako lost three away finals in five years, before finally getting the opportunity to host the game in their own backyard. Before the match, former Marlborough captain and Ranfurly Shield winner Ray Sutherland said hosting the final was a tremendous achievement, and a vindication of the merger between the two unions. Tasman 31 (Will Jordan 2, David Havili tries; Mitch Hunt 2 cons, 4 pens) defeated Wellington 14 (Alex Fidow try; Jackson Garden-Bachop 3 pens) HT: 23-14

At the 2019 Mag & Turbo Tyre & Service Centre KartSport NZ South Island Sprint Championships in Dunedin, lap records tumbled in the near perfect racing conditions that greeted competitors at the South Island title meeting at Silverstream with a similar mix of the predictable and the not so across the five classes contested. Class title winners at the 2019 Mag & Turbo Tyre & Service Centre KartSport NZ South Island Sprint Championships meeting hosted by KartSport Dunedin at

Silverstream Raceway were; 125cc Rotax Max Light – William Exton (Picton) 125cc Rotax Max Heavy – Arron Black (Dunedin) 125cc Rotax Max Junior – Bo Hill (Nelson) Vortex Mini ROK – Louis Sharp (Christchurch) Cadet ROK – Izaak Fletcher – (Christchurch) 2018 class title holders William Exton (Jnr Rotax & Jnr Yamaha) and Arron Black (125cc Rotax Max Heavy) both again dominated proceedings in the balmy 27 degrees C temps that greeted competitors at the South Island meeting. Both qualified quickest, won each class race they contested (Exton now in Seniors and running in 125cc Rotax Max Light) and set new class lap records, Black in the second
