By Celeste Alexander Many car enthusiasts would agree; a well lived life is like driving a car. You have to make minor adjustments all along the way. If you are someone looking to make adjustments to your own vehicle, then the Ford Club of Marlborough invites you to attend their Marlbor-

ough Automotive Swap Meet and Vehicle Display event, the first time one has been held for all vehicle models in Blenheim. It’s being held on November 17 at the Alfred Street carpark, and all vehicle and motorcycle makes and models are welcome, as well as the public. Continued on page 2.

Members of the Ford Club Marlborough, Jill O’Brien, Murray Eyles and Dave Packer with St John Marlborough area administrator, Gayle Chambers (centre), are looking forward to holding a Swap Meet and Vehicle Display event on November 17, with proceeds going to St John Marlborough.

A day for all car lovers Continued from page 1. On the ground level stall sites will be set up by people wanting to sell carparts, and on the first and second levels of the building, cars will be displayed. Those organising it are hopeful that the public will support it by taking along their own “pride-and-joy”, to browse through the car-parts for sale or simply to view the vehicle display. This is because the Ford Club of Marlborough is looking to donate proceeds from the entry and display donations to St John Marlborough. What’s more, it will only cost a gold coin donation for the public to go along, and a $2 entry for vehicle owners wanting to display their cars or motorcycles. The organising group behind this initiative are club members Murray Eyles, Dave Packer, Dave Weir and Jill O’Brien. The Ford Club of Marlborough has 77 financial members who have vehicles from as early as a 1930 Ford Model A Pickup, up to the modern 2018 Mustangs. It was during one of the meetings that member Dave Weir suggested

Sunday saw people from around Marlborough gather at Brayshaw Park for the Vintage Farm and Machinery Open Day. There, multiple static and working vehicles and farm equipment were put on display. A restored cottage from the 1880's was also opened on the day for the public to take a look at. Food, drink, bouncy castles, and even Mr Whippy were there to keep people cool and refreshed. Diagnosis motivates Picton retiree By Celeste Alexander Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease can be devastating, but for Picton woman Christine Finlow-Bates, it’s also proved to be motivating when it comes to exercise. Christine was officially diagnosed in February 26 of this year by a neurologist in Nelson. One year prior, she had noticed when she was walking one of her arms was hanging in a different way. Then in May of last year she noticed a tremor in her left hand. “It was only when I was concentrating on something that I really noticed it,” she says. “The following month I visited my GP who then decided it was a benign essential tremor. I began reading and researching as I wasn’t convinced. I went and saw a different GP for a second opinion and they referred me to see a specialist in Nelson who diagnosed me with Parkinson’s. “It didn’t come as a surprise as I had pretty much decided at that point that it was Parkinson’s,” she says. For Christine, who has spent her life travelling and living abroad and enjoying physical activities such as line dancing, tramping and gym workouts, Parkinson’s was not something that was going to get her down. “It can be a downer when you start reading about it, but what I’ve found beneficial is to keep positive and to exercise. “It’s barely been a year since I was diagnosed and I have no idea how fast it will progress, but I do know that exercise is the best medicine and you feel better

Garden Fete this Sunday Rapaura Springs Garden Marlborough 2019 event is just around the corner, set to take place from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 November. There will be plenty of activities for the public to enjoy over that time including the STIHL Shop Garden Fete on the Sunday. It will be held at the Churchill Glade on Parker Street featuring plants, artisan vendors and garden product stalls from 9am – 3pm.

Call for water conservation in Renwick The High Street water mains upgrade is continuing over the next two weeks in Renwick and means most residents may experience lower water pressure than normal. The MDC is bringing the new bulk water main along High Street into service over the next fortnight, so residents are urged to limit their use of water for non-essential purposes. Once demand goes over 40 litres per second, residents will notice a reduction in pressure. This will only happen if there is high demand due to garden irrigation

emotionally,” she says. Christine contacted the Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Society community educator and registered nurse, Janine Ready, who works with 100 clients in the region who are affected by Parkinson’s. Janine was able to provide Christine with resources and access to an MS Parkinson’s exercise class held Wednesdays. This adds to Christine’s line dancing and two hours of ex-

ercise she does every morning. “Anyone with MS or Parkinson’s can access our service,” Janine says. This week, November 1-7, is Parkinson’s NZ Awareness Week and Janine is keen to spread the message that exercise is now bringing hope to people with neurological conditions. “We see symptom improvement and a better quality of life of those that exercise. Research

has proven that high intensity exercise produces Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) which facilitates neuroplastic restoration. “Currently there is no cure but the right kind of exercise has significant implications for neurological conditions like Parkinson’s, MS, stroke and brain injury,” she says. Nadine Taylor named deputy mayor Re-elected Marlborough Mayor John Leggett has chosen Marlborough Sounds Ward Councillor, Nadine Taylor, as his deputy mayor. Appointing Nadine as deputy was a logical decision, Mayor Leggett says. “Nadine has excelled in her role as a Councillor in the last three years. We work well together and I’m confident she has the qualities to be outstanding in the role.” The Council will retain the same committee structure as the previous term but the Environment Committee has been strengthened to reflect its important workload. The Environment Committee will have a three member leadership team, chaired by the Mayor supported by Councillors David Oddie and Gerald Hope. Under the Environment Committee umbrella, the Resource Hearing subcommittee will be chaired by Councillor Oddie who will also be responsible for the climate change portfolio. “Environmental management is at the heart of Council’s responsibilities and we have increasingly complex issues to consider. I want this committee to be strongly led and well supported because the work we are doing will determine Marlborough’s environmental reputation,” John says. He went on to say all councillors would be encouraged to take individual responsibility for leading their allocated portfolio areas. “There is a real depth of expertise on this Council and I want to ensure

we make the most of the skills that are on offer while also providing pathways for future leadership opportunities.” As well as her role as Deputy Mayor, Nadine will chair the Assets and Services Committee, overseeing the management of the Council’s big-budget assets and amenities infrastructure. “Councillor Michael Fitzpatrick is to be deputy chair of this committee and I’m sure his experience will see him excel in this position,” John says. Mark Peters, who will chair the Planning, Finance and Community Committee, has an excellent grasp of the financial management of Council’s operations,” he adds. “Planning, Finance and Community is a big committee and I have chosen Councillor David Croad as its deputy chair given his business and governance skill set.” Mark has also been appointed to Council’s Audit and Risk Subcommittee. “I have opted for proven experience with Council business and procedure in my choice of chairs but, overall, I want to see the subcommittees oversee much of the workload just as they did last term. I believe it is an efficient way of working. “Allowing the subcommittees to sift through the issues and work closely with Council staff means we get good quality reports for the full committees to examine,” John says.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street.

Q: Which song hits you with a wave of nostalgia or emotion every time you hear it?

Kelly Hamilton Linkwater ‘Stand By Me’. It reminds me of the movie and makes me feel happy.

Lee Mason Blenheim ‘Always On My Mind’, by Tiki Taane. It’s myself and my partner’s song - “our” song.

Marie Wilke Blenheim ‘We Are The World’. We learnt it at home in Germany. It’s a song that connects every nation.

Rosemary Baxter Linkwater I don’t have any particular songs that make me feel nostalgic, but I love country and western music. I grew up with it and it reminds me of family.

Sophie Reid Linkwater ‘The Phoenix’ by Fall Out Boy. I love loud music and it makes me feel very energetic.

Tere-Ariki Vardey Blenheim ‘Under Pressure’ by Queen. I just really enjoy listening to the song.

Theres a glaringly obvious opportunity for a center right broadcaster to bring some balanced opinions and facts to the voters. Look at the success of Fox News in America and Sky News in Aussie. What were they afraid of, the truth? Nom de plume TV 3 missed opportunities.

Support for new speed limits

Near crash

I have been reading with interest about the new speed limits for SH6 between Blenheim and Nelson and I have to say that I support them, based on the dollar figures alone. The plan stacks up! The Ministry of Transport says the social cost of each death is around $5 million and the cost of a serious injury close to $1 million. According to NZTA, in the 10 years between 2009 and 2018, 20 people lost their lives and 92 were seriously injured in crashes on the highway between Blenheim and Nelson. Therefore, deaths on this road have cost our country

Coming home from Nelson on Sunday 27th November at approx mid day, I approached the ‘new’ piece of road going over the Rai saddle. I was aware of a vehicle coming down the hill but as I reached the straightish part of the road, I realised to my horror that the car I had seen was on my side of the road - dead center on my lane......I literally had seconds to get out of the way, the first second I hoped ‘they’ would realise their error. Hell no.....I just had time to swerve onto the slow lane on my left before the car hurtled passed me. I was ‘aware’ that the

around $100 million and serious injuries around $92 million in just 10 years. People are crying over an extra few minutes travel time and truck drivers are complaining about the impact on the economy. It’s about time that we looked at the bigger picture and accept the fact that the road toll is already affecting our economy and that there is something we can do to change that quickly and cheaply – slow down! It could save our loved one’s lives, and even if they are not impacted imagine what else we could do with that much money! Maureen McDonald

car was being driven by a youngish girl with a passenger and she was driving a small, very bright blue, car. My heart was pounding and my fingers and toes were tingling, I didn’t have the after sight to look in my rear view mirror to see if she had got onto the correct side of the road or get a reg no. It shook me up as you can imagine - it’s not the road or the 100k speed limit that’s at fault, it’s the idiots that are to blame for poor driving habits and the habitual need for speed. Maggie Walker (I could have been no. 3)

Seymour Square/library I would like to congratulate the council gardeners for the lovely colourful floral display at Seymour Square. Now the council have the site to commence building the new library

and arts centre I trust the council will instruct the architect to follow tradition and incorporate a large hole in the roof as per the station bus shelter. Kiwi.

Sarah’s idea for new op shop By Aimee O’Hagan Woodbourne local, Sarah Huntley, is passionate about making a difference – but she desperately needs help from the rest of the Marlborough to make a particular community-oriented goal come to life. The mum of two aims to set up an op shop. Not just any ordinary thrift shop, but a store in which every item is just $1. The motivation behind it? Sarah’s disappointed at the lack of Marlborough op shops selling lowcost items, and believes that there needs to be a place where second

hand items – especially clothing – are nothing but accessible and affordable, especially for struggling families. “I’m always opshopping,” she says. “When I see things that are six or seven dollars, I think, well, what about the low income families that can’t afford to buy these things? “School uniforms, warm clothes, and even blankets for winter are so expensive. “How good would it be if people had a place they could go to and know that they’d be able to find something for an affordable price? “It would help so many families

out. “What’s the point of going to an op shop and finding a piece of clothing, when you can go to a big store like Kmart and buy something cheap and brand new for the same price? “The thing is, it’s so bad for the environment. “I mean, where are these big department stores getting their fabric from? Why is it as cheap as it is?” From Sarah’s perspective, a $1 op shop would prompt people to stop buying low quality stuff brand new, and encourage them to reuse items and shop secondhand. For her, a store like this would definitely be

the first point of call. However, Sarah has one minor drawback: she doesn’t have a property in which to get the op shop up and running. “It would be really helpful if a community group, a church, or anybody else has a space that I could use for the shop.” Sarah says she would prefer if all profits went towards a local cause that directly benefits children in need in our community, but says that it is really dependent on the owner of the potential venue and where they personally want the funds to go. “I have so many ideas and I’m

Sarah Huntley with daughter, Ana, and Beau the cat. Sarah aims to open an op shop whose proceeds go directly towards helping children in need within the Marlborough community.

really excited to get this going,” she smiles. “If I don’t get any response, my next step is to start looking at who I can contact, and go from there. “People might think that their church has space, but they might not personally be able to say that I can use it. However, it would still be a lead that I can follow up. “No matter what they have to say, I’d love it if people got in contact.” For more information about the project or to help out in any shape or form, Sarah can be contacted by email at sarahhuntley@outlook. co.nz.

In memory of Chris Marion Knight’s late husband, Christopher, was a strong and healthy man. He had been a publican, a maintenance man – he had even swum the English Channel. But when he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2014, he was told he had only months to live. Marion talks to Bill McElhinney. “They gave him six months when he was diagnosed early in the year. We thought he might make it to Christmas, but he went through to February 2015,” his wife, Marion, says. “Watching him fade away was dreadful – I wouldn’t wish it on anybody. “And the person who has the disease gets upset as well because they become so reliant on someone else.” Christopher and Marion met and married in the Cotswolds, England, where Chris was a publican. “We ran a typical English pub – The Spotted Cow – with three guest rooms and a marquee for weddings. “It was full-on, but we both loved it,” Marion says. They came to New Zealand for a holiday and to visit their daughter, Tina Johnstone, who had married a Kiwi and settled in Blenheim. “We toured the South Island and loved it,” Marion says. “Chris loved sailing and the Marlborough Sounds were so attractive. He said: ‘We could live here!’ “So we went home, sold the pub, and moved to Blenheim in 1996.”

“It was a shock, and the diagnosis was confirmed several months later, when Chris was then told he had only months to live.” With their previous experience in hospitality, Chris and Marion went to work with Terry and Toni Gillan who were establishing their Gillan Winery. “Chris had previously worked at the Blenheim Country Lodge, and had also run the Hunter’s Winery restaurant,” Marion says. “Then we joined up with the Gillans and really enjoyed that.” Chris also got to indulge in his love of sailing, joining Gil Painter on his yacht, sailing around New Zealand

and taking part in the annual Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Yacht Race across Cook Strait. “Chris then started working as a maintenance man,” Marion says. “He had refurbished a lot of houses in the past, so he used those skills to do a variety of maintenance tasks. He was always strong and active. “Then in 2014 we went to Australia for a big family Christmas celebration, and on Boxing Day Chris wasn’t looking himself. “I said to him, ‘I don’t think you’re well; let’s take you to hospital.’ “We went to the hospital in Manley, where they told him he was low on oxygen and had pneumonia. He was in hospital for five or six days before he was allowed to go home. “When we got back to Blenheim I could see Chris wasn’t well. He was lacking in energy, he was very quiet. “We went to see Dr John Hedley, and after examining Chris he said he felt Chris could have Motor Neurone Disease. “It was a shock, and the diagnosis was confirmed several months later, when Chris was then told he had only months to live. He was only 68.” Marion was determined to nurse Chris at home for as long as she could, and with the help of a nurse who came in every day to help shower and dress Chris, she did for a while. “But after two or three months Chris couldn’t eat, drink or speak, and was being fed through a tube in his stomach, which was really hard. Motor neurone disease affects the death of the nerve cells (neurones) that control the muscles that enable us to move, speak, swallow and breathe. These muscles gradually weaken and waste away, which causes progressive loss of mobility in the limbs and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. “Hospice Marlborough people were wonderful and Chris would go there for two or three days to give me some

respite.” It was a painful journey for both of them. Chris finally passed away in the Hospice on February 10, 2015. Since then Marion has been involved with the Marlborough Motor Neurone Disease support group, and with her previous experience in the hospitality industry, helped organise a successful mid-winter Christmas Dinner fundraiser.

“It was a great success,” Marion says. “We raised $10,000 for research into the disease, so we hope to repeat it every year. Marion is also a regular volunteer at the Marlborough Hospice Shop in Redwoodtown. “I help out there regularly, because I want to pay them back for all the help they gave Chris,” she says. An incredible 100 year milestone was recently celebrated by Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd, marking a century for this iconic company. Based in Havelock, it’s owned and operated by Peter and Jennie Johnson who are the third generation to continue on the Johnson family business. The original intention of Eric Johnson to provide a reliable service and be adaptable to clients’ needs, all at a fair price, is still the company’s aim 100 years later. “NEVER UNPREPARED.”

It has been 20 years since Marlborough Motorcycles owners, Brendon and Cathy Wadsworth, launched their business from home. Humble beginnings quickly grew to a larger scale operation covering motorcross, enduro and trail riding, and the opening of a premise on Grove Road. Then in recent years the couple purchased Peter Grinter Motorcycles, a business which has operated since 1981, putting two well established motorcycle names under one roof. Today, Marlborough Motorcycles holds the Can-Am and Kawasaki dealerships and provides sales and servicing for all forms of motorcycles.

Despite many students from multiple different schools around Marlborough submitting poems about the river to Marlborough District Council, the four were the only students chosen to have their poems engraved on a plague and mounted onto the riverside rocks. The initiative has been

going since 2010 and is a partnership project between MDC and Marlborough schools. Pictured are Tegan (left), Mafi, and Ronan, who unveiled their poem near the Beaver Road footbridge. Shackleton’s poem was uncovered a mere 100m away. Photo by Aimee O'Hagan.

Harry, Meghan, and Archie escape the paparazzi spotlight A family of three rescued Little Blue Penguins were successfully rehabbed and released on Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary in Picton Harbour last Thursday. The three Little Blue Penguins were rescued in September by EcoWorld Aquarium & Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre staff. Members of the public alerted EcoWord staff and they were found the family trapped and distressed in a drain in the Interislander Ferry carpark in Picton. The two adult penguins and their baby, were admitted to EcoWorld Aquarium’s

OMAKA

Omaka a world-wide attraction

Omaka Aerodrome is a hidden gem in Marlborough, but is well known on the world stage. With its grassy runways, wide open spaces, world class restoration projects on classic aircraft, and one-of-a-kind aeroplanes, it’s a buzzing community. For aviation enthusiasts, you can’t beat the ideal flying weather that the region offers. With facilities like this, it’s no surprise that a small town like Blenheim has individuals from all over the globe coming to check out its heritage. For Classic Aero Machinery Service’s Tony Wytenburg, the Omaka Aerodrome location is essential to his aircraft restoration work. The several grass runways provide ideal conditions for the many classic aircraft which are built and tested by Tony and

his team. “It hasn’t just got one runway, so classic aircraft can take off into the wind,” Tony says. Omaka has become a bit of a hub for aircraft restoration, Tony says. Paul and Pip Hally from PMH Aviation Limited collect aircraft that have a rich history with the region. They’ve brought back to Marlborough a De Havilland Foxmoth from 1947, one of only seven in the world. With two other parties, they are rebuilding a Waco aircraft, which is the only one of its type in the world, and was previously owned by Marlborough Aero Club in 1936. “Whether you like aviation or not these aircraft are very significant to the region,” Pip says.

Graham Orphan has been publishing the Classic Wings Magazine for 25 years out of Omaka. Having lived in three different countries and travelled many more, Graham chooses to live in Marlborough specifically for the airfield. “I can’t think of a place I’ve lived in or visited, or another community with the richness and ability to work together for the greater good than Omaka,” Graham says. From the world-class Omaka Airshow to the Aviation Heritage Museum and everything else in between, the buzz around Omaka still grows. “People from all over the world are drawn to the positive energy and great activities here. “The community is absolutely remarkable,” Graham says.

Spring Classic success for veteran Woodley Local veteran motorcycle racer, Jock Woodley, recently competed at the Spring Classic held at Manfield Motorsport Park. The event, organised and run by the New Zealand Classic Motorcycle Race Register club, is an annual event attracting riders from all over New Zealand to compete not only for class honours, but also the first round of the North Island verse South Island competition. Jock races a Yamaha TZ350 Grand Prix bike similar to that raced by himself and his brothers, Bruce and John, during the 1970’s and 1980’s. “Lester Ferdinand owns the bike and I am privileged that Lester asked me to race it for him,” Jock says. “We have improved the bike over time and as well as having a well prepared strong engine we have suspension and a chassis that work well together. We were especially keen to get to Manfield as the fast sweeping track is a test for handling as well as speed.” Jock races the bike in the ‘Pre1982 Junior’ class and on track at Man-

field he raced with the ‘Pre1989 Formula 2’ class. “So on track we were up against many Ducati 750’s, 600cc bikes and the likes. The track lines required are somewhat different in places on the lightweight GP bike compared to the big four stroke bikes so it is a great competition while racing for class honours,” he says. At the end of the weekend when the points were added up Jock came away winning his class. To his delight he managed three third place finishes overall on Sunday with a 750cc and a 600cc bike only in front of him. “I had some awesome battles with the big boys” Jock says, “the different styles of power and the different riding styles of the bikes made for great racing”. Another local rider Paul Brown raced his 600cc Yamaha at the same event, coming away with second in his class, the Pre 1989 Formula 2 class. Some issues with his engine meant he had to nurse the bike some but was able to finish every race still running at good speed.

“To top off our weekend we came away with the South Island winning the round of North vs South Island challenge, we now await the second and final round which will be held at Levels raceway at the end of November,” Jock says. “In fact I have to thank Paul for being so supportive to Lester and I where we had a shortfall in some parts to build the new TZ350. Paul was able to come to our rescue with some parts and is so interested in what we are doing. Being an ex TZ350 pilot himself he understands the challenges associated with these highly strung bikes.” Jock is now concentrating on preparation for his next big meeting, an International event run by the Classic Action Motorcycle Series Club at Levels raceway, the Mike Pero Southern Classic. “Last year we had over 300 bikes at this event with a number of international riders. This year we celebrate the racing sidecar class and I understand there are 25 plus rigs entered. November 29 through to December 1.”

Local veteran motorcycle racer Jock Woodley.

Bohally Intermediate have won a bronze medal in an extremely closely fought South Island Intermediate Schools Water Polo Championship. It was the first time that the school had entered the competition, which was held in Dunedin from 25th to 27th July and had fifteen teams participating. In their first match on Friday, they played against last year’s champions, Cobham, and in a very tight match, finished with a 3-3 draw. On Saturday they played four tough, physical matches against Southland Girls, St Hilda’s, James Hargest and Columba, resulting in wins in all: 17-1,14-0, 11-1 and 12-3 respectively. Sunday morning was a crunch match against last year’s runners up, Christ the King, who were a big, well drilled team. In a nail-biting match that Bohally led until the last quarter, they were edged out 4-6. Despite only having lost one match and having the second-best goal difference, this

result meant that they would play in the bronze medal match against Columba. That match resulted in a repeat of the pool stage result with Bohally coming away 12-3 winners. Pleasingly, spectators and opposition coaches were effusive in their praise of the way in which the team played and the spirit and fairness in which they did so throughout the tournament. What made the tournament result more impressive was the fact that they had only put the team together a few weeks previously after many of the players had performed well at a tournament in Lower Hutt a month ago. At the prizegiving, two of the team were also named in the Tournament Team (best seven players): goalkeeper, Alex Boyce, and team captain, Ryan Marsh. Big thank you to the team sponsors, Agrivit Ltd, Lorraine Barreteopaths, First National, and Marlborough Osteopaths.
