Silence in honour

By Celeste Alexander The news that everyone had been waiting for finally came through on the morning of 12 November 1918 – a Tuesday. Germany had surrendered and signed an armistice with the Allies the previous day, after a battle which lasted from 28 July, 1914 to 11 November, 1918. Now 101 years on, the Marlborough Returned and Services Association (RSA) honoured those who made the ultimate sacrifice by holding an Armistice Day Memorial Service on Monday. Blenheim man and veteran, John MacPherson, attended with his grand-daughter as he paid his respects and honoured the memory of his father, Robert, who served in the British Royal Navy during the first and second World Wars. Continued on page 2. Airforce veteran John MacPherson and his granddaughter Liv MacPherson, pictured at Monday’s Armistice Day commemorations in Blenheim.

In honour of First World War fallen Continued from page 1. Monday’s rain meant the memorial service was held indoors at the Clubs of Marlborough main hall, where members of the Marlborough RSA were joined by Airforce personnel, family members, and the public as they paid their respects. A two minute silence was observed at 11am followed by the national anthem, sung by Marlborough Girls’ College student Rosie McAllister. Mayor John Leggett welcomed attendees followed by an address by Wing Commander Kerry McKee, RNZAF Base Woodbourne. A heartfelt prayer was also given

by Padre Terry Terrill in recognition of Chaplains Corps Day. As wreaths and poppies were laid, there were tears and emotions throughout the room as some veterans took a moment to remember family members who served during WWI. For John, it was a moment of reflection as he laid his poppy for his father, Robert MacPherson, who served in the British Royal Navy. Upon his left breast he had his own medals proudly pinned. Born in Scotland, John served in the Airforce before moving to New Zealand in 1957 and joining the NZ Airforce

as a safety equipment technician. “During my time with the RAF, the NZ Airforce was looking for new members so I answered the call, then stayed on through to my retirement,” he says. John regularly attends Armistice Day services and says it’s still important for people to show their support. “It’s nice to see that even after all these years since WWI, people turn out and show their appreciation for those who lost their lives. “ I ’m p r o u d t o h a v e m y grand-daughter with me at today’s service and it’s good to see the

younger generations attending too,” he says. What is Armistice Day? After four terrible years, the First World War finally came to a close with the signing of an armistice between Germany and the Allied Powers on 11 November, 1918. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns famously fell silent. New Zealanders celebrated enthusiastically, despite having recently celebrated the surrenders of the three other Central Powers – Bulgaria, Turkey and Austria-Hungary – and the premature news of an armistice with Germany.

There was a lot of emotion felt in the room by those who attended the Armistice Day Memorial Service, particularly during the wreath laying and placing of poppies.

Police disappointed in motorists speeding near school Marlborough Police are extremely disappointed with the number of motorists detected speeding outside Marlborough Girls’ College during a recent road policing operation on Nelson Street. Police issued 288 infringement

notices to motorists in just four hours on Tuesday, 5 November. “This is an incredibly disappointing result,” says Senior Sergeant Peter Payne, Marlborough Prevention Manager. “Even small increases in speed result

in a much greater increase in your stopping distance. “That can mean the difference between life and death for pedestrians, so it’s vital that drivers slow down around schools.” Police will continue to run road

policing operations throughout November, focused on safe driving around schools. “Motorists need to be driving at a speed and in a manner that enables them to respond safely to the unexpected,” Sergeant Payne says.

Kris North with his Ducati will be taking part in the White Ribbon Ride's South Island leg which kicks off this Friday. He's pictured with Debbie Webster of Mike Pero Real Estate, who has sponsored the ride, and White Ribbon ambassador Ken Mahon.

Ride against violence By Celeste Alexander White Ribbon Ride – heard of it but you’re not entirely sure what it’s all about? It’s an event which sees a group of motorcycle riders convoy through towns in New Zealand, spreading the message that violence destroys families, and the South Island ride begins and ends in Marlborough. This week-long motorcycle tour happens every November – White Ribbon Month – and is a powerful and inspirational voyage for all involved. A lead group of riders steer convoys through towns in the North and South Islands, picking up support riders in every region along the way. White Ribbon Ambassador, Ken Mahon of Nelson, says this will be his sixth time taking part in the event. Joining him for his second

year will be his friend, Blenheim man Kris North. Kris says it’s a good cause to be part of and he’s looking forward to setting out. “Everyone needs to stand up for something and this is something I believe in, so I’m proud to be part of it,” he says. For Ken, the first time he took part was “a humbling experience”. “My first thought about violence was ‘how can a man beat a woman’, but after meeting people who shared their own stories, you soon realise that the mental control and abuse lasts longer than the pain of being hit,” Ken says. Ken is a member of the Red Knights Firefighters Motorcycle Club which has 10 chapters throughout the country. This is how he met Kris, through a charity ride.

Kris will be joining this year’s South Island group, who will begin their journey from Picton this Friday, travel down to Invercargill, then come back up to Blenheim on November 25. The main focus of White Ribbon Month is about men standing up, speaking out and taking action against violence towards women. “We are encouraging men to take ownership and if they see a mate being violent, pull him up and don’t ignore it,” Ken says. “This year we want to challenge those unwritten rules that guys grew up with like… “don’t be a girl” and “toughen up”! “These can suppress a person’s true feelings, so they learn to hide their hurt, which can then have a negative effect on them, and ultimately lead to violence. Violence destroys families, sets

our children on a destructive journey and affects one in three women,” he says. Also backing this year’s White Ribbon Ride is Mike Pero Real Estate Marlborough franchise owner, Debbie Webster. While she won’t be on a bike, she has donated $500 towards the fuel costs. “It’s my pleasure to be supporting the White Ribbon Ride,” she says. Organisers are encouraging the public to head along to Countdown Blenheim supermarket between 11.30am – 12.30pm on Monday, November 25, where space will be provided for the bikes to park up and the public to meet those taking part. White ribbons will be handed out, as well as information, and the public can meet with riders.

Camera Club Exhibition A photographic exhibition by the Marlborough Camera Club is currently on display in the upstairs foyer of the Clubs of Marlborough. The exhibition features work exploring the destructive impact of plastic on our marine life, contrasting photographs that celebrate the beauty of our planet, and more. It will be on display until Saturday, November 23.

Nell Gwynn will make you grin! By Aimee O’Hagan It’s been an exciting last few months for the cast and crew of Marlborough Repertory Society’s exciting production, Nell Gwynn, who are currently preparing for the show’s upcoming season. Opening night is tomorrow evening, and the production is set to run until November 23. With ticket costs ranging from $27.50 to $37.50, Nell Gwynn is being shown at Blenheim’s Boathouse Theatre. The delightful play is set in the 1660s and tells the story of one of London’s first actresses, young Nell Gwynn (Aley Matthews), who

catches the eye of promiscuous, theatre-lover, King Charles II (Jaemes Churchward). When Nell becomes Charles’ mistress, it causes stirrings both within the King’s Court and amongst theatre group, the King’s Company, of which Nell is an extremely valued member. Throughout the play, she is forced to choose between three significant aspects of her life: love, career, and family. Directors, Pam Logan and Tamara Henry, say Marlburians should come see the show because it truly has “something for everyone”. “It’s set in the restoration theatre period and based on real people, so there’s a lot of history embedded in the play,” Pam says. “It’s modern, witty, very baudy, and features feisty women fighting for what they want! “Although it does have obscure references,

there is no bad language.” According to Tamara, Nell Gwynn is “joyful” and “full of life”. “It’s a fabulous play – the cast has really enjoyed it, and I know the audience will too,” she smiles. The two say that a definite highlight of Nell Gwynn is the “catchy” music; although the production is not a musical, Pam and Tamara’s version features a trio of musicians, who play tunes inspired by the era and often feature on stage alongside the cast – enlivening the play and raising it to a whole new level of entertainment. “Come along to Nell Gwynn – you are guaranteed to be thoroughly entertained!” Pam says. Family fun at A&P Show By Aimee O’Hagan Last Friday and Saturday saw many Marlburians get out of the house and head to Blenheim’s A&P Showgrounds for the annual Marlborough A&P Show. While they were there, visitors snacked on candy floss and hot chips, went for rides on the popular ferris wheel and other fairground attractions, tried their luck at winning a new toy at the sideshows dotted around the grounds, and took their pets – which included sheep, cows, horses, and other farm animals – to be judged for various competitions. According to Marlborough A&P Association president, Chris Bowron, this year’s show was incredibly successful.

“I’d have to say it was even better than last year,” Chris says. “The weather was beautiful and exactly what we wanted. “It was great to see so many people getting out and enjoying what the show had to offer. “I am so pleased with how it went.” He says he was ecstatic to see so many school students from primary schools around Marlborough coming to the show on Friday to interact with all the animals that were there to pet and cuddle. “It’s what the A&P Show’s all about, really,” Chris says. “People having fun!” See more photos from the show in The Sun’s Out and About section on page 14.

Crossroads office manager, Lauren Dodson, has helped organise the appeal, which is to be held this Friday.

Crossroads to hold new charitable appeal By Aimee O’Hagan For the first time ever, Crossroads Blenheim is set to hold an appeal day this Friday; not only will supporters of the charity be raising funds, but they will also be raising awareness of Crossroads’ purpose and the work it does in the Marlborough community. According to Crossroads office manager, Lauren Dodson, all of the money raised throughout the day will be going towards “running costs” for the organisation. Crossroads needs approximately $11,000 to $14,000 a year in order to provide food, drink, a shower, care and support, and other essentials for members of the Marlborough community who are unable to provide for themselves. Collectors will be stationed on Market Street, at Redwoodtown and Blenheim

Countdowns, and at PAK’n’Save from 9am until 1pm on Friday. “People will be able to recognise us by our yellow, high visibility vests, our collection buckets, and our brochures, which will contain information about Crossroads Blenheim for people who are interested and want to find out more about us. “Cancer Society Marlborough were nice enough to provide us with the high vis’ vests and collection buckets.” According to Lauren, the idea for the appeal stemmed from the organisation’s desire to fund themselves. “At the moment, most of the funds dedicated to us are grants,” she says. “We decided to do this appeal because we wanted to find more ways of being self-sufficient. “We would really appreciate the support.”

Ferry Bridge traffic hazard cleared Many thanks to the member of the public, who took it upon themselves to clear the long grass, and growth from both ends of the Ferry Bridge at Spring Creek. It had become a hazard, as the view of traffic at both ends was hard to see. You should be rewarded with the amount

of fuel that your scrub cutter used. I hope now, that Roads Marlborough will spend the time spraying the area, to prevent further growth. While motorists in high vehicles such as SUVs would not have a problem, motorists in lower vehicles, such as cars had difficulty

in seeing approaching traffic from either end. I was about to register a complaint, but the helpful citizen did the job before I needed to. Well done sir. Grateful Motorist.

Beer Fest ‘a little extra special’ By Celeste Alexander Sunshine, music and a pint of beer in hand – could it get any more Summer than this? It’s exactly what will be on offer at the up and coming Renaissance Summer Beer Fest set for December 14, held at Dodson Street Beer Garden. Owner Dietmar Schnarre has been holding this event for several years now, but this year’s festival will be something a little extra special. “Being the only licensed brew pub in Marlborough, and the fact we have been next door to the Renaissance Brewing Company for the past seven years, we are celebrating the unique collaboration between both of our companies,” he says. Dodson’s has also one of the largest beer gardens in New Zealand. This year’s Beer Fest will feature 34 taps in total including 18 Renaissance, 10 from guest breweries as well as ciders for this Beer Fest. For those who prefer a wine, there’s a strongly focused wine list for Caythorpe Family Estate and Giesen Wines. This is just one of the reasons why the annual Summer Beer Fest is so popular with locals and out of town visitors. “Of the 300 tickets we have available, 180 sold very quickly,” Dietmar says. “People enjoy everything we offer including entertainment, German food to compliment the beer, a large car-parking area and a great social environment. “It’s a good old fashioned party,” he says. Lights, camera, action! Young filmmaker, director, and script-writer, Tyler Redmond, tells Sun reporter Aimee O’Hagan about his inspiring new film, ‘Rise Up’, and why it is that he is so passionate about the art of filmmaking. Blenheim local, Tyler Redmond, was only eight years-old when he wrote and directed his first video. It was filmed on his iPad, and the plot was similar to that of the 1982 fantasy classic, ‘E.T., the Extra Terrestial’. It starred himself and his little sister, Ava, and was filmed at home in their backyard. Fast track to eight years later, and the 16 year-old has launched his own filmmaking company, ‘Collaborative Kiwi Studios’, has made approximately seven movies, and is currently preparing for the premiere of his 25-minute film, ‘Rise Up’. The screening of Rise Up will be held at the Clubs of Marlborough, on Friday November 29, at 6:30pm, and entry is free. It’s a film that explores the subject of bullying (particularly in high school), the effect it has on those who experience it, and how to deal with the problem. Rise Up took approximately a week to shoot and features multiple young, local faces, including Amy Bain, Max Kenny, May Saussey, Ants Hamlin, and Samantha Mayne. The idea for the film stemmed from Tyler’s personal experiences; he himself has struggled with bullying in the past and felt the issue needed to be addressed. “I wanted to make something I could relate to,” he says.

“You can wish something up and make it happen.” “The best way I could do that was to write a movie about something that’s happened to me. “All I had to work out was how to tell the story and who to use to tell it. “What I’m trying to do is make people think. “Bullying is a subject that I want to

talk about – something we need to talk about.” Despite the film being based around serious issues, he says that he did try to add some childlike essense to it, describing the genre of the film as a “drama with hints of comedy”. He hopes people will “learn something from it”, and that it will both entertain and educate his audience. For Tyler, making the film has been both a very positive experience and a big challenge. It has been no mean feat to organise the sheer number of people

involved. “The first film I made had a cast and crew of fifteen, my second film had a cast and crew of 21, and this film had a cast and crew of 300,” he says. “Even then, we had to use some of the main characters as extras in scenes.” The script has been through three rewrites, but nowhere near as much as the actual film. “I’m up to my 304th edit at the moment!” Tyler exclaims. “It’s been a lot of hard work.” Outside of Rise Up, the teenager’s

favourite part of making films is that it is a medium through which he can tell stories, especially ones that are important and need to be told. “It’s like being a genie,” Tyler says. “You can wish something up and make it happen. “When I make films, I feel like the God of my own universe!” He says the best piece of advice he has for budding filmmakers is to “not give up on your dreams, and keep making crap until it gets good!” “If people treat you like rubbish,

don’t give up,” Tyler advises. “There have been so many people who have undervalued me and disrespected me as a filmmaker – my age makes people not take me seriously and think I’m incapable of doing my job. “I’ve made my film, Rise Up, to get a message out there, to tell a story of my own that I’ve been wanting to tell for quite some time. “You can also tell your story in your own different way – in a song, in art, whatever way you want – there’s lots of different mediums out there that you can use.”

Celebrating

25 YEARS Always a warm welcome

Members of the organising committee for this weekend's St Christopher's Morning Market are; Mark Peters, Colleen Agnew, Viv Peters, Lynne Simpson and Dale Simpson with an example of what will be on offer.

Something for all at Morning Market Over 30 years ago a group of St Christopher’s Anglican Church parishioners decided to organise an event which would create an opportunity to connect with the wider Blenheim community, as well as raise funds for their church. Their idea of a Market Morning proved popular and was well supported. There were a few years where the market was not held while other events took place, but it returned and went on to be hugely successful in the years which followed. This Saturday the church will be celebrating this long-running success and inviting the public

along. One person who has been involved from the market’s early years is Viv Peters, who says the Market Morning is an event enjoyed by parishioners and the wider community. “We think our market is great as it provides goods for sale at reasonable prices and is friendly. “People often tell us they look forward to this event,” Viv smiles. “We invite the community to come along and see everything we have to offer, purchase goods and enjoy a cup of tea and BBQ. “Money raised from our Market Morning goes towards keeping our hall up and running and

supports the programmes we provide,” she says. This year’s market will take place this weekend, November 16, from 8.30am through to 1pm. Church volunteers will have stalls with a huge array of goods for sale. “The hall will be full of things to see,” Viv says. “We will have cakes and baking made by our parishioners, jams, chutneys and fresh produce that we do ourselves, plants, treasures, second-hand clothing and books, sweet treats for children and for the woman with everything, Janet Briggs will have her embroidered makeup facecloths and beautiful-

ly smocked dresses. “With Christmas around the corner come and see our group of ladies who make the most wonderful Christmas decorations, and for the men we will have our garage area for bigger items. There are some very interesting things that go in there,” she says. For craft lovers, there will a stall held by a local craft group which uses the church as a meeting point, and of course refreshments. “If you want to try the best whitebait sandwiches in town then come along,” Viv says. “I always tell the cooks that I like a bit of patty in my whitebait please,” she laughs.

The St Christopher’s Hall is often used by the community for weddings and other events such as horticulture shows. “We have a lot of people who come to our hall and it’s quite a big place, so the money we raise helps to keep it in good condition,” Morning Market convenor Viv Peters says. The church runs an outreach programme, a Jitter Bugs music programme for under-5’s and an Eldercare programme which seeks to reduce social isolation and enhance the mental and physical wellbeing of older people living in the Redwoodtown area. “There is also a walking group which meets once a week for people to enjoy gentle exercise in a social environment,” Viv adds. “Whether you have been a Christian for a long time, or have never stepped foot inside a church, you will find a warm welcome here at St Christopher’s.”

Renwick treated to top shearing

Peter Stratford (left) and Howard Hughes. Photo supplied.

By Celeste Alexander Renwick was treated to some fast paced, high quality shearing last Friday night during The Woody Speedshear and Bark-Up event. There were some well-known local names taking to the stage in the speedshear including the Higgins family, with siblings Sarah and Duncan rising up the ranks in the senior categories. Duncan took the top spot in the seniors with his time of 28:32, followed by Sarah with a time of 35:29. Duncan also went on to win the Fastest Local Shearer award, receiving the Lou O’Leary Memorial Trophy. In the Open section there was a new name on the list for the first time; Te Kuiti shearer Jack Fagan who proved

to be a massive draw card and took out first place with his time of 22:75. Jack is the son of Sir David Dagan, New Zealand’s most successful competition sheep shearer. “It was brilliant having Jack in our competition,” Rowan Ingpen of the Woodbourne Tavern says. “He’s an example of the quality of shearing we saw on the night. Jack had never been to Marlborough before and wanted to come and have a shear, so competed with us and at the A&P Show,” he says. This year’s Speedshear saw a slight decline in shearer registrations, however Rowan says the quality was definitely up. “We had a lot of out-of-towners this year including guys from North Canterbury who came up for some

hunting and thought they’d come have a go. We were happy with the entries and the large crowd we had really enjoyed the action… it was packed,” he says. There were also six teams registered for the fun part of the competition and the winning spot went to Team Woody, which included Joel McKee, Anna Wilson, Nikita Henderson and Jack Fagan. The Bark-Up event was once again well attended and Best Bark was won by George Wadworth with his dog Frank, Best All Rounder went to Jack Marshall with his dog Jock, Best Team went to Holly Sandoe with her dogs Ranger, Ash and Shade, and finally Most Improved went to Rebecca Stewart with her dog Maggie.

Howard masters speech-making T he Sunbelt Spea kers Toastmasters held its Annual International Speech Contest and Evaluation Contest last Tuesday, November 5, at the Woodbourne Community Centre. Both events were won by Howard Hughes, who will now join Peter Stratford, winner of the Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests, to represent the Sunbelt Speakers Toastmasters at the area level competition at Lake Rotoiti in February 2020. The International Speech Contest requires contestants to present a five to seven minute speech on any subject they choose. Howard’s winning speech, “Paper, Rock, Scissors”, encouraged us all to take every opportunity life offers us. Howard also won first place

in the Evaluation Contest, where contestants observed a speech presented by a visiting Toastmaster and then presented a two to three minute evaluation (feedback) of the test speech. Speech contests provide an opportunity for speakers to improve their speaking skills and give all Toastmasters an opportunity to learn by observing the contestants. All contests are judged by experienced Toastmasters members. If you would like to gain more confidence in public speaking and leadership then come and visit Sunbelt Speakers Toastmasters. For more information about Sunbelt Speakers go to https:// www.facebook.com/SunbeltToastmasters/ or http://www. toastmasters.org.nz/.

ARE YOU PREPARED IF

DISASTER STRIKES?

Earthquakes, what to do before and after Earthquakes: they strike anytime of the day. You can be at home, at work or driving on the road – but the one thing we all have in common is the ability to keep ourselves safe during, and after, an earthquake. During: If you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps, drop, cover and hold. Stay indoors till the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit. If you are outdoors when the shaking starts, move no more than a few steps away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then drop, cover and hold. If you are at the beach or near the coast, drop, cover and hold then move to higher ground immediately in case a tsunami follows the quake. If you are driving, pull over to a clear location, stop and stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Once the shaking stops,

proceed with caution and avoid bridges or ramps that might have been damaged. If you are in a mountainous area or near unstable slopes or cliffs, be alert for falling debris or landslides. After: Listen to your local radio stations as emergency management officials will be broadcasting the most appropriate advice for your community and situation. Expect to feel aftershocks. Check yourself for injuries and get first aid if necessary. Help others if you can. Be aware that electricity supply could be cut, and fire alarms and sprinkler systems can go off in buildings during an earthquake even if there is no fire. Check for, and extinguish, small fires. If you are in a damaged building, try to get outside and find a safe, open place. Use the stairs, not the elevators. Watch out for fallen power

lines or broken gas lines, and stay out of damaged areas. Only use the phone for short essential calls to keep the lines clear for emergency calls. If you smell gas or hear a blowing or hissing noise, open a window, get everyone out quickly and turn off the gas if you can. If you see sparks, broken wires or evidence of electrical system damage, turn off the electricity at the main fuse box if it is safe to do so. Keep your animals under your direct control as they can become disorientated. Take measures to protect your animals from hazards, and to protect other people from your animals. If your property is damaged, take notes and photographs for insurance purposes. If you rent your property, contact your landlord and your contents insurance company as soon as possible.

During and after an earthquake, falling debris outside of buildings can pose a serious risk to people, so be alert and once the shaking stops, proceed with caution.

Wishing Tree Appeal to help those in need By Aimee O’Hagan Yesterday morning saw members of local community organisation, Salvation Army, gather at Kmart Blenheim (alongside Kmart staff) to kick off the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal for 2019. The annual appeal’s aim is to collect gifts or money to give to those in need within the community

for Christmas, particularly children and families who live under the poverty line. Despite being held in other regions around New Zealand for the last 26 years, this is the first time that the appeal has been launched in Marlborough. “Over the years, half a million children around New Zealand have

received gifts [through this cause],” Salvation Army representative, Susan Goldsack says. “We are so pleased to enter the project, too. “Christmas is not just about the gifts – it’s about the experience of love and expressing care for others. “It’s extra important during this mad season to help families that

are struggling to enjoy Christmas.” In order to contribute, gifts can be dropped into the green boxes at the entrance of Kmart Blenheim, which are underneath the ‘wishing tree’ in store. Taking a bauble tag off of the wishing tree will enable those who do so to scan the barcode at the register and contribute towards the cause, and coins can

be dropped in the collection boxes at the registers to make a monetary donation. You can also give online at kmart. co.nz/kmartwishingtree. Unfortunately, the appeal is unable to accept secondhand gifts. Items do not have to be purchased from Kmart nor wrapped up before given to the appeal.

Kmart staff, Nige Scott (left), Ragnita Devi, Irene Lu, Jade Mathijssen, Nicole Williams, Ieva Rimkute, and Raman Deep Kaur stand around Salvation Army representative, Susan Goldsack (centre), as Bo-Cheng Hse (left) and older sister Fu-Yun start the ball rolling by putting the first she cuts the celebratory cake. two toys in the collection box.

Be safe - be SunSmart

New Zealand sunlight can have high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation can cause skin and eye damage. You can protect yourself and your children by being SunSmart and learn how to keep safe while still living life in the sun. Here in New Zealand, we must protect ourselves when we are outside from September to April. Protect yourself all year round when you are in the mountains, out on the water and around reflective

surfaces like snow and ice. Slip on a t-shirt with long sleeves. Fabrics with a tighter weave and darker colours will provide better protection from the sun. Slip into the shade. Take shade under an umbrella or a leafy tree. Plan your outdoor activities for early or later in the day when the sun’s UV levels are lower. Slop on sunscreen. Use plenty of broad-spectrum, water resistant sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Apply 20

minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, especially after being in water or sweating. Slap on a hat. Wear a wide brim hat or a cap with flaps. More people are sunburn on their face and around their neck than any other part of the body. Wrap on sunglasses. Choose close fitting, wrap around style sunglasses. Not all sunglasses protect against UV radiation, so check the label for the sun protection rating.

Be SunSmart and protect yourself from the sun this summer.

The face and neck areas are prone to burning, so wear a wide brimmed hat and use sunscreen.

Common myths Understanding common myths and misinformation about sun safety might reduce your risk of sun damage. I can’t get sunburnt on a cloudy day. False. You can still get sunburnt on a cloudy day. UV radiation can get through light cloud cover, so unprotected skin can still be damaged. I can’t get sunburnt on a cold day. False. You can still get sunburnt on a cold day. UV radiation can still be high on a cool day when infrared radiation, which causes the heat from the sun, is low. You can also get sunburnt on ski fields, because snow reflects more UV radiation than any other ground surface. I’m windburnt not sunburnt. False. Your windburn is actually sunburn. The wind may make you feel cooler, but

UV radiation can still be high, even on a windy day. If there was such a thing as windburn you’d get windburnt if you were out in the dark on a windy night. My makeup has SPF, so I’m safe all day. False. Cosmetics and moisturisers with SPF can help protect you from the sun’s damaging rays. However, many cosmetics offer protection that is much lower than the recommended sunscreen minimum of SPF30. Also, many cosmetics are not broad-spectrum or water resistant. In addition to wearing SPF makeup, use all the SunSmart steps – Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap. A suntan is healthy. False. A tan means your skin has been damaged, which increases your risk of skin cancer.

I can’t get sunburnt through glass. False. Glass reduces UV radiation, but does not block it. If you spend long periods in a car or next to a window receiving direct sunlight you should be SunSmart - Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap. I don’t need to worry about sunburn as I have dark skin. False. New Zealand can have periods of very high UV radiation. Everyone, regardless of skin type and colour, is at risk of skin and eye damage. I’ve had sunburn before, but now I protect myself. That means I’m safe from developing skin cancer. False. UV damage adds up over your lifetime. The good news is that it’s never too late to be SunSmart. To prevent further UV damage be SunSmart – Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap.

Marlborough Helicopters Ltd has been working out of Omaka for almost 40 years and helping people in Marlborough and Nelson from the skies. “We have a long history with the airfield,” Owen Dodson from Marlborough Helicopters says. “We utilise all the other skills out there.” Over the years they have provided support in farming, forestry, firefighting and civil defences. By being eyes in the sky and the accessibility a Helicopter

provides, Owen and the team are able to help local farmers with weed control, help develop scrub into pastures, keep an eye on invaisive shrubs and help with spraying. They also contribute hugely to the vineyards and forestry companies locally which keeps all the work local. “We are also one of the first people to call in the event of a fire or civil emergency. “We all work together,” Owen says.

It’s been a very busy few weeks for Marlborough Academy of Dance director, Robyn Simmons, as she oversees all of the preparation for the up and coming end-of-year production Mission: Possible – Quest for the Key. With a year’s worth of lessons, exams and competitions now finished for the Academy’s students, Robyn is looking forward to seeing students have fun and embracing the mix of dance, music, song and drama together on stage. Dance has played a huge role in Robyn’s life since the young age of three. Her journey began with her mother Daphne, a dancer who had learned from iconic dance figure Betty Vercoe. Betty was a long-standing Blenheim teacher and one of the Blenheim Operatic Society’s best-known stalwarts. “As a three-year-old mum took me along to learn. I start-

ed with ballet then at the age of seven I switched to Highland which became my main focus. “I grew up in dance and Betty put me into operatic shows where I gained more experience. Unfortunately Betty died young so I started teaching at the age of 18 and have been ever since,” Robyn says. Robyn has gone on to be involved with Highland dancing nationally and internationally for more than 40 years and has seen many of her students achieve New Zealand championship titles. This was seen again this year during the NZ Highland Dancing Championships hosted in Blenheim where a number of Robyn’s Highland dance students won titles. “A lot of local kids did very well and our senior Highland class has several national champions in it. “We have Imogen Grayson who lives in Auckland and

travels to Blenheim for lessons, and is the NZ U18 Highland dancing Champion and the PACANZ Young Performer of the Year winner, as well as Zoe Blackmore who is number two under Imogen, and also a national champion,” Robyn says. Over the years Robyn’s students have performed in NZ teams in Scotland, USA, France, Korea, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. She has been a member of the NZ Academy of Highland and National Dancing since 1975 and on a local front, has also been involved in charity events such as this year’s Stars in Your Eyes show. For her services to Highland dancing, Robyn was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in 2012. For more information about the Marlborough Academy of Dance, contact Robyn at Marlb.Dance@xtra.co.nz

Battles and bragging rights in night of speedway action By Celeste Alexander Eastern States Speedway held its second race meeting for its season on Saturday, managing most of its rounds before the rain made track conditions too slippery, ending the night earlier than expected. The stockcars took to the track for the Battle of the Vines Round 1, and like the previous meeting, it came down to the Alexander brothers, Tim (77e) and Scott (59e), who fought for the top two placings. It remained fairly tame until Taylor Forbes in the 79e made the first contact as he attempted to spin a couple of the passing cars before kissing the wall himself. The productions came out with more tenacity than the last meeting and were full noise, full speed from the get go. Frank Burns in the 66e car dominated much of the night. Car troubles plagued Kaitlin Taylor (15e) with a blown engine towards the end of the night, leaving her out of the final race. All was going well in the youth ministocks field until Riley Keen in the 94e car got caught up in a pack and made contact with Gemma Hodgson (22e), spinning her aside. Her body language from inside the car was pretty clear, she wasn’t happy with losing her spot, and returned to

the race with the intention of making up time. Later during the night there was a cheeky tap from her on Riley but nothing that put them out of the race, until a wet track prevented their final race and ending the youth ministocks’ night a little earlier than sched-

uled. Looking for bragging rights, the streetstocks didn’t hold anything back as they competed in the Ford vs Holden feature. Nelson’s KC Rose in the 19N car stirred up the local drivers by collecting wins from the beginning, a streak which was

soon stopped by newcomer Jacob Lutherus (22e) who took the final race win for the night. The next race meeting for Eastern States Speedway will be on November 23 with the Production Saloon Open Champs & Martin Motors 20 Lap Trophy, Saloons and Canterbury ATVs.
