Goodbye MGC By Aimee O’Hagan

Marlborough Girls’ College’s community of pupils, teachers, and parents alike are saying an emotional goodbye to one of their most well-known and longest-serving staff members. English teacher and “king of the human condition”, Bill Morrow, is putting away his books today after spending 43 years teaching at the Blenheim-based

high school. Retirement is now the reality for the head of department (HOD) for English, who says that the highlights of his time at MGC have definitely been the people – both the staff and the students – and the abundance of memories. Continued on page 2.

Bill Morrow is retiring after teaching at Marlborough Girls’ College for over four decades.

School’s out for Mr Morrow Continued from page 1. According to Bill, his lengthy teaching career first began in his mid-twenties. In 1974, he went to MGC as a practicum (a student teacher/trainee), but only stayed there for a month, leaving Blenheim and going on to teach at schools in Ashburton, Napier, Riccarton, and other places around NZ for similar periods of time. After two years of transferring from school to school, Bill heard about a permanent job going at MGC. He applied for the role, got the job, and was soon back at MGC working as a full-time history teacher. “I’ve taught more history over the years than I’ve taught English,” Bill says, “but I was [definitely] involved

with English earlier on. “I would’ve been assistant HOD for English in 1996... And I took over as HOD in 2003.” “I’ve been at it for a while!” When reflecting on the changes that he has seen take place at MGC over the last four decades, Bill says that there are almost too many to mention. “There’s been a huge number of changes in the curriculum,” he says, having experienced the various switches from the old school certificate right through to the current day NCEA unit standards. “I think that would be the biggest change.” “The school’s grown too... There have been a lot more buildings [added to the campus].

“Also, the internet has obviously been a major change in terms of kids’ resources.” According to Bill, an amusing memory from his time at MGC was when someone put a piece of toilet paper in a senior teacher’s sausage sandwich. “We all sat there watching as he ate it while reading the paper,” he chuckles. Despite teaching students across all five year levels – from year nine through to year thirteen – Bill says that his favourite classes have always consisted of the older pupils. “I’ve really enjoyed the year 13s that I’ve had, both in history and English,” he says. “I’ve particularly enjoyed the schol-

arship classes. “The most important part of teaching is the fact that you’re able to inspire a few people. “Teaching is about getting [students] to believe in themselves. “It’s not all about exams – it’s about self belief.” For Bill, a principal philosophy is to always see the best in his pupils and believe in their ability. “No matter how difficult a student is, there’s always some sort of spark there,” he says. “The hardest thing is figuring out how to light the spark.” Bill’s plans for retirement include playing a bit of golf, riding his bike, and spending lots of time with his family.

Kathy farewells teaching By Celeste Alexander

Renwick School teacher, Kathy Moseley, has been asked by her students if she will cry this week, as she retires from teaching at the end of this term. “I’ll be extremely sad to leave teaching, I know that,” she smiles. “I’ve a lovely class this year and I feel it’s a good time to leave the profession on a high note. “It’s also an exciting time as I leave with many wonderful memories from my time at Renwick School. I’m very much looking forward to an early retirement; travelling with my husband and spending some more time with family,” she smiles. Born in Blenheim, Kathy has lived her whole life in the region. Going through high school it wasn’t teaching she had in mind for a career, it was music! “When I finished school instead of heading to university I decided to stay home and finish my music letters on the piano. “I then started working at Wairau Pharmancy and went through training to be a pharmacy technician which I did for eight years. I really enjoyed that but after our two daughters were born I stayed home to raise them,” she says. During her time at home raising her family, Kathy gave private lessons for the clarinet and piano. When her daughters, Nicola and Julia, were a little older, she took up a position at the Marlborough Girls’ College as an itinerant music teacher and went on to teach clarinet during Saturday morning music classes for many years. After deciding on a change, Kathy decided to go from teaching music to studying to be a primary school teacher. After four years of study, Kathy graduated alongside her daughter Nicola who was also capped on

Family worried for missing man A Blenheim man has been missing from his Redwoodtown home since last Wednesday. Holger was listed as a missing person on December 6.

the same day. “That was quite special,” she says. Kathy began teaching at Renwick School in 2002 in the 3/4 and 7/8 year levels, but she admits her “happy place” is teaching the years 5/6. “I love that age group,” she smiles. “It’s a great age.” As Kathy prepares to close her classroom for the final time, she says in between overseas travel and her ongoing involvement with the Marlborough District Brass Band and Blenheim Musical Theatre, she still plans to provide relief teaching to the school. “I won’t be completely gone but it will be nice to have that time with our four grandchildren as

well as my elderly parents living in Ashburton. “Plus there’s the gardening at home I need to catch up on,” she laughs. Husband Kevin is also retiring from 30 years of training and conducting the Marlborough Brass Band, as well from his role as the musical director for the Blenheim Musical Theatre. He will, however, carry on teaching when he’s available. “We’ve both been so involved with the brass band and Blenheim Musical Theatre that we couldn’t just walk away and not have it part of our lives,” Kathy says. “But next on our list is five months travelling in a campervan through Europe. Exciting times are ahead!”

Renwick School principal, Simon Heath, says Kathy has given so much to Renwick School over her 18 years. “Teaching across Years 3 to 8, leading teams of teachers at these levels, leading our school choir and creating the most amazing school productions just to name a few, she is a very respected teacher in our community. “Her contribution to so many childrens’ lives and bringing her musical talent to our school have all been so wonderfully appreciated. We are going to miss Kathy’s leadership, her sense of humour and her very unique school productions. We thank her so much and wish her all the very best in her retirement and pending travels.”

Christmas spirit at Blenheim parade Photos by Aimee O’Hagan

Despite getting heavily rained on halfway through, Blenheim’s Christmas Parade for 2019 did not fail – as always – to bring festive cheer to Marlborough’s biggest town on Saturday afternoon. Thousands of Marlburians

came along to watch the exciting parade, gathering together and lining the streets of Blenheim’s CBD. There were many community groups that took part in the event, with members decorating trucks, tractors, and cars alike in shimmery tinsel, and dressing up in

Christmas outfits and colourful costumes. The parade was led by the Marlborough District Brass Band and concluded by the classic Santa’s sleigh (which also featured his “little helpers”) and the Blenheim and Districts Highland Pipe Band.

The iconic Santa's sleigh float wraps up the parade.

Marvellous effort at parades Well done to all who took part in the recent Picton and Blenheim Christmas Parades... The floats were beautiful and bright, making us all feel the Christmas cheer. Great effort from everybody. My kids loved getting handed some sweets and other goodies to take home. The only downsides were the weather and the lack of sound. Blenheim’s was a very quiet parade with just the brass band and the highland pipe band making music (from what I remember). We need more music next year! - Happy bystander

Power consumers set for $200 credit Electricity lines company, Marlborough Lines Ltd, this week announced a 20% increase in the total dividend paid to the Marlborough Electric Power Trust ($6m) and a net profit after tax of $8.4m, for the year ending 30 June 2019. Marlborough power consumers benefit annually from the company’s discount and also the dividend to the Trust, which is used to fund a distribution to consumers. Chairman, David Dew, says that Marlborough Lines is in a strong

position and continues to deliver to its dual vision of operating a successful, reliable and safe electricity network and undertaking investments to the benefit of current and future beneficiaries. While total operating revenue increased 0.5% to $152.4m, a decrease in net profit after tax on the previous period resulted from the increased cost of sales and lower harvest volumes for Yealands Wine Group (YWG). The mark to market (non-cash) movement on interest rate swaps was negatively impacted by

Seaview vineyard at $137,000. This gain is recognised as part of the company’s total comprehensive profit for the year of $20.2m. The net assets of YWG are now $205m compared to the amount invested by Marlborough Lines of $122m - a substantial increase over the four years following Marlborough Lines’ purchase of the wine producer and exporter. Planted vineyard, winery capacity and dam storage have all increased over the past year and provide strong foundations for the future.

A new CEO, Tiffani Graydon, has been appointed and will provide strong leadership for YWG. Consistent with previous years, YWG has paid a dividend of $5.5m to Marlborough Lines. These funds along with other investment proceeds have been used to fund the $6.0m dividend to the Marlborough Electric Power Trust. The Trust has announced that these funds will be used to distribute a $200 credit to consumers for their electricity accounts in early 2020.

Wine sales reached $104.7m (up 2.8% on the previous year) and EBITDA was $20.0m, prior to NZ IFRS adjustments. Property owned by YWG saw a revaluation gain of $13.8m. Tiffani Graydon’s grape return Tiffani Graydon is back for her second tilt at Yealands Wine and this time she is in charge. The new chief executive officer speaks with Jacob Page about what has brought her back, learning from early business failures and balancing family life. Tiffani Graydon’s 20-plus-year career in the alcohol industry has earned her the biggest professional accolade so far as the new CEO of Yealands Wines. It turns out twice is nice for the new boss who returns to the company after an initial eight-month stint in the company last year in a different role. Her passion for the industry came almost straight out of university when her first tilt at business proved to be an unsuccessful yet opportune learning experience. “I do have a passion for the alcohol industry, it’s one of those things that once it has got hold of you, it’s hard to find something just as dynamic,” she says. “When I was studying I had a raft of hospitality jobs and then in my last year of university, I had a crazy idea with a couple of friends to open a restaurant and bar. “It was the couple of years we owned that where I fell in love with the wine industry and I used to deal with wine reps and I started to learn more about the industry. “I was very young and quite naive because I don’t think I’ve worked harder than I did back then at 21 or 22-years-old.”

“I’ve always had a love of food and wine and how it socially connects people.” “I really had no idea of the work that was required to run a restaurant but I took away an introduction to an industry which has given me so much more in my career,” she says.

“It wasn’t the most successful business but it gave me more than what it appeared at the time.” She says she learnt a lot about herself during the tough introduction to business. “Resilience is one, I remember we would be opening and at the odd time we’d still be trying to track down our chef and it taught me how important people management skills are and ultimately how important the customer is at the end of the day.” “From there I went into a sales type role at Montana and the skills I learnt during that time really helped.” Tiffani has worked at Lion, Antipodes Water Company and Pernod Ricard amongst others over the past two decades. She was also Yealands’ Group Manager Sales and Marketing between February and September of 2018. While she admits she has bounced around, it has been her drive and work ethic which has seen her prosper and in this case, return to the company. “I always try to leave the door open and I believe relationships are very important in business and it’s a small industry in New Zealand like a lot of businesses are and I hold a high value on my reputation.” She says the opportunity to return to Yealands as a leader is a career highlight. “I do feel this is my highlight today because I worked hard personally and professionally to get to this point especially over the past six or seven years.” Tiffani will split her time between Auckland and Blenheim for the role which was something she was looking forward to. “Our site at Seaview is a pretty special place so I’m incredibly fortunate to have that as my Blenheim office as well as my team in Auckland.

“The connection with the community of Marlborough is a big part of our business and it’s very important to us. “Coming in from working with a large multi-national, you can see what a positive that local ownership can be and I’m committed to being visible in the leadership role and that means splitting my time between Blenheim and Auckland.” Tiffani says her family’s support has been crucial in allowing her to chase her professional dreams over the years. “I have three kids, a daughter who is in her first year at Auckland University and a son who is 13 and another daughter who is eight. “I have a very supportive network, my Mum has always been a very active grandmother and we’ve lived close by and my husband is extremely supportive.

“I think a lot of people would say, regardless of the level of role you are in, that balancing things is just the way of the world today. “I’ve been fortunate that I’ve worked for companies that have supported a work/life balance and that coupled with the fantastic support around me has made things much easier.” Tiffiani says she tries to make the most of her down-time when it comes. “I live close to the water in Auckland so I love going for walks and I like to cook so I try to remain active while feeling like I’m winding down as well but I like to cook and have social occasions with the family. “Having travelled a bit, you try a bit of food and I try to bring some of it home with me. “I like to cook Thai - anything

Asian because we’ve travelled around that area a bit as a family so that can be a go-to for a meal.” She says Yealands appealed to her last year because of its history. “There’s a genuine Kiwi success story there,” she says. “I remember sitting in a competitor’s seat and looking on and thinking there were lessons to learn from Yealands especially around sustainability. “It may be a buzzword now but 10 to 12 years ago it really wasn’t something being bounced around board rooms. “I love going into businesses and transforming the performance within the teams and business units - it’s pretty energising.” She says Yealands wants to be a leader in sustainable wine-making while being true to the company’s Marlborough roots.

Debbie’s chop for charity By Aimee O’Hagan

Debbie’s hair before getting cut for Freedom Wigs NZ.

Saturday morning saw Blenheim local, Debbie Balcombe, get a haircut. But her motivations behind the chop, weren’t just to get a cool new ‘do’ Debbie was doing so to support two organisations, the Cancer Society and Freedom Wigs New Zealand. “My hair will be given to Freedom Wigs and will be made into a wig for people with Alopecia Areata [Totalis, Universalis, and other long term hairloss conditions],” Debbie explains. “The organisation does not take donations, so they will be paying me for the hair that I give. “This money will then be donated to the Cancer Society.” In order to get the chop, Debbie’s hair had to be at least 35.5cm long, unprocessed (with no perm nor coloured dye), young (no greys or whites!), and squeaky clean. The hair was donated as pigtails to

ensure it was as long as possible and there were no flyaway hairs. According to Debbie, the idea to donate her hair stemmed from a desire to make a tangible difference in other New Zealanders’ lives. “I prefer to donate my time intsead of donating money,” she says. “Organisations need the volunteers to make things happen. “I have donated my time to Rarangi Surf Life Saving Club, Plunket, Girl Guiding, and the Grovetown Restoration Working Group. “This time, my time was put into growing my hair, with very little effort. “I was nervous about getting it cut, and thought it would probably make me look like a boy - I [will] wear a hat most of the time until I [can] grow it longer again. “Tiana at Beyond The Fringe has done an amazing job, and I love it. “I have shocked a few people as I have always had long hair!”

There's no going back now! Debbie holds her hair in her hands.

Catch the lucky fish to win great prizes The highly popular Lake Argyle tag competition is all go, and this year Nelson Marlborough Fish & Game have ramped up the prize pool, with two $500 Henderson’s vouchers up for grabs, plus rod and reel combos, lure packs, free licences, and more! Over 200 tagged fish will be released into Lake Argyle before Christmas, and you could be the

one to net the lucky fish! “It’s simple. Catch a tagged fish, send us in your tag number and we’ll let you know if you’re the winner of one of our prizes,” says Jacob Lucas of Nelson Marlborough Fish & Game. “We plan to have Lake Argyle positively brimming with fish for the holidays, including lots of huge trophy trout released also.

This week we plan to release around 600 adult trout into the lake, and then another 200 tagged fish for the holiday season competition. “Like our Facebook page to find out exactly when the fish release will take place. We love getting your photos too, so try and send one of you and your tagged fish,” he says.

Anticipated Christmas concert set for Sunday Free family fun, carols and entertainment for the whole family – what more could you ask for as we count down to Christmas? This Sunday will see the highly anticipated Christmas in the Park event take place at The Glade, Pollard Park. It’s been a much loved and popular community event for many years held by the Blenheim Christian Ministers Association (BCMA), providing a

day of fun and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. The theme is, “That’s Christmas To Me” - which explores the Christmas story through different cultures, and includes a multicultural flavour to showcase as much of the local talent as possible. Make sure you don’t miss out on this event, so mark it in your diary for Sunday, December 15 from 1pm.

There will be two parts to the Christmas in the Park event this Sunday, beginning with a Family Fair which will run from 1-2.30pm. The organising committee behind the Christmas in the Park, will be putting on loads of free family entertainment including inflatables, face-painting and games for all ages to enjoy. What’s more, this year there will be an exciting new feature that will really set the Christmas theme – a Winter Wonderland snow room, sponsored by Glamour Weddings and Events. “There’s a secret surprise as part of the Winter Wonderland, so make sure you come along and see it for yourselves,” says one of the organisers, Shanan Barnett. “It was important to us to create a family friendly, community environment that’s free to enjoy, so everyone can have a fun experience leading up to Christmas. Last year’s Family Fair saw lots of new faces coming along which was fantastic, and we hope to see that again on Sunday,” he says.

Crowd favourite, the Hummingbirds, are back again this year and will be performing for the crowd.

Carols and fun set for concert The second part to Sunday’s festivities is of course the main attraction – the Christmas concert which runs from 2.30pm – 5pm. Crowd favourite, the Hummingbirds, will be back on stage again to entertain with their singing as well as leading the carols. Acoustic Boomtown will be another top act, a local rock band featuring Brad Pope, Phill John-

son and Sean Crockett, while the Marlborough District Brass Band will entertain and play Christmas carols throughout the afternoon. With the theme being “That’s Christmas To Me”, there will also be a multi-cultural element to the lineup. This includes Te Pa Wananga - the new Satellite classroom of Renwick School at Omaka Marae, performing ‘Kupe Finds Christmas’, and the

great voices and musical talents of Ni-van seasonal workers of ‘Vanuatu Sound’. “Christmas in the Park has always been a wonderful way of showcasing local talent, while bringing the community together,” Shanan Barnett says. “It’s one of the outings that Blenheim’s known for: it’s hugely popular and an event that everyone knows and loves.

Helping to organise this year’s Christmas in the Park are the Blenheim Combinded Ministers Association, Your Day Wedding and Events, Glamour Weddings and Events and sponsors; MoreFM Marlborough, Pak’nSave, the Sun Newspaper, Marlborough Lines and the Marlborough District Council.

Delicious food on offer In addition to an exciting line up of family fun and the Christmas concert, there will also be a mouth-watering selection of food stalls ready to feed the hungry crowds. A fundraising sausage sizzle will be run by Harvest Life Church with all funds going to

the Hospital Chaplaincy. Mr Whippy will be there with his icecream and donut caravans, Robyn’s Hotdogs n Chips, Sarah Cowan will be serving up refreshing real fruit icecream and coffee, Hazbeanz Coffee van will also be onsite, and Rosie’s Hot Food will be serving up delicious BBQ beef

cheeseburgers, chicken and chips snack packs for the kids, fresh spring rolls with dipping sauce and Soba noodle salad. And for something a little different, try some of the delicacies being served up by Kai Creations and Te Pa Wananga’s traditional Maori Kai.

Riding for charity Ulysses' 10th annual Toy Run this Saturday By Celeste Alexander

Christmas is for giving and coming together, which is exactly what the Ulysses Club Marlborough Branch will be doing this Saturday. Every year in December, members of the motorcycle club hold their Toy Run event in support of the Salvation Army Toy Appeal. This year it’s their 10th annual Toy Run and members are hoping for a good number of riders supporting it. What’s unique about the Toy Run is that it’s not just for Ulysses members, but also the public. Branch coordinator, Kelvin Watson, says they are

Ulysses Club Marlborough branch member, Tim Wills, pictured at last year's Ulysses Toy Run dressed as Father Christmas. The Toy Run will take place again this Saturday and anyone with a roadworthy motorcycle is encouraged to take part. File photo.

encouraging members of the public who have roadworthy motorcycles and scooters, to join in on the Toy Run. “It’s great to see new faces turn up our Toy Runs and especially when family members ride together,” he says. “On a good day we see around 80 bikes turn up but we are open to as many people who want to come along.” The Toy Run begins at the Woodbourne Tavern at Renwick. Riders are asked to meet at 11am, and the ride departs at 12noon. As per tradition, the ride is led by a member dressed in Christmas theme and anyone wanting to donate

a toy in Renwick can take it along before they depart. Salvation Army volunteers will be on hand to collect all donations. After departing the ride will head into Blenheim and finish at Blenheim School where the Salvation Army will have a BBQ fired up for a gold coin donation. Toy donations are also welcome there and the public is welcome to go along, look at the motorcycles and enjoy a sausage sizzle. Toys for all ages are welcome but please no soft toys. "We hope the public gets in behind the Toy Run. We hope to see you there," Kelvin says.

Encourage safe driving Keeping an open dialogue with your children while reinforcing the restricted license rules helps young drivers to be safer and more responsible when they get behind the wheel, says a mother of two. Annie Gleeson taught both her daughters to drive, but didn’t rely on her own skills and knowledge alone. “We made sure they got driving lessons from a professional to ensure they knew how to prepare properly for the tests, were getting the most up-todate version of the road rules, and didn’t pick up any of the bad habits we may have unconsciously developed over the years.”

Like most teenagers, Annie’s daughters had busy social lives and were often in and out of the house with friends, especially over the summer holidays. While the girls enjoyed a reasonable amount of freedom, there was no question of breaking any of the restricted licence conditions, Annie says. “While we were open to discussing and negotiating just about anything with the girls, we were very strict when it came to driving, the rules are the rules and there’s very good reasons for them. Conversations about what was on the agenda for the day and planning ahead to ensure they

wouldn’t be out after curfew, or be pressured into driving their friends were part of the daily routine, Annie says. “When they got old enough to drink alcohol there were lots of conversations around their rights and responsibilities and ensuring they really understood the consequences, there was a lot of negotiating and trying to keep the rules as considered and fair as possible for their age. “They knew they could always call me if they needed a ride home, there was never any bending of their licence conditions and they’ve always known that drinking and driving is never OK.” PBA.

Free CAB raffle a hit with shoppers By Celeste Alexander

Raffles are always fun to take part in. You purchase a ticket and wait in anticipation to hear if you have won a prize. However the Citizens Advice Bureau took it a step further by running a free raffle yesterday, giving shoppers at the Countdown Blenheim supermarket the opportunity to go into the draw for a box of Christmas goodies – and at no charge! Volunteers, including Sue Plummer and Carol Lake, could be found at the stall in the morning and handing out information about the Citizens Advice Bureau to members of the public. Carol says the free raffle was something the organisation has done for the past few years. “It’s a chance for us to speak with people who might have heard of us, but didn’t know what we do,” she says. The Citizens Advice Bureau provides free, confidential, independent information and advice to anyone. Volunteers help people know what their rights are and how to access services they need. To contact them people can phone 0800 FOR CAB (0800 367 222); visit their office at the Marlborough Community Centre on Alfred Street, Blenheim or email them via their website, www.cab.org.nz

Motorcycle prep for holiday riding As we head into the summer holidays, we can expect a higher volume of traffic on the roads, so it’s worth taking a bit of extra time to ensure your motorcycle is ship shape. Motorcycle suspension guru, Dave Moss, chooses to maintain all his motorcycles more frequently than the manual recommends to keep them in optimal condition and enjoy thousands of kilometers of riding as good as it can be. “Motorcycles only have two wheels and we are fully exposed,” Dave says. “If you do not maintain your motorcycle correctly, any mechanical failure will erode your safety and a serious brake failure, engine seizure, chain snapping, wheel bearing collapsing or sprockets breaking can take your life as there is no safety cage to protect you.” Some of the benefits of keeping your motorcycle well maintained include optimal brake function, saving money by burning less fuel and minimising fatigue by keeping handlebar levers and rear brake and shift pedals well greased and adjusted correctly, Dave says. Motorcycle maintenance

need not be expensive there are plenty of adjustments riders can learn to do themselves - check out Dave Moss Tuning on YouTube for a huge collection of free videos explaining motorcycle maintenance including cleaning brake callipers, cleaning a chain and checking and changing brake fluid. Dave Moss’ DIY motorcycle maintenance tips • Clean your brake calipers with a toothbrush that should have been replaced three months ago. • Clean your chain with WD40 sprayed on a rag, check adjustment and lube it every other week. • Check free play in the throttle and clutch and adjust it correctly. • Replace brake fluid every four months with a spanner, hose and drain bottle. • Check tyre pressure weekly to use less fuel and optimise grip and longevity. Dave Moss will be in New Zealand over summer and running a suspension workshop in Marlborough on Saturday 1 February 2020. You will need to register as spaces fill up quick. PBA.

Celebrating 5 years

Come on in, see what we offer Colin Price with the wheel balancing machine.

The team at Mag & Turbo Blenheim are excited to not only be celebrating five-years since it first opened its doors, but are also welcoming people into the store to find out about the many deals, specials and list of vehicle servicing that’s on offer. Owners, Darrell and Tina Bate, are proud of how much the business has grown over the years, which has seen the expansion of its workshop, equipment and technology, and range of accessories. As Marlborough’s only authorised Mobil Service Centre, the team uses Ryco oil filters and of course, Mobil oil. They also specialise in suspension and brake replacements and repairs, whether it be standard or upgrades.

“We offer many options in lifting or lowering vehicles and can also provide a thorough printed suspension test on your vehicle,” Darrell says. “A vehicle will only typically fail a Warrant of Fitness on visually leaking suspension, whereas the performance of what it is doing is often not measurable in a WOF process. “Tired suspension can result in poorer braking, handling, uneven tyre wear and passenger discomfort,” he says. Mag & Turbo Blenheim is the region’s preferred supplier and installer of Lock On towbars and various other vehicle accessories from across its supplier network. Anything from bonnet guards and weather-shields, through to roof racks and 4x4

bars and winches. For the past 18 months, Mag & Turbo Blenheim has also been an agent for Alttune, an engine ECU remapping service. From passenger cars to supercars, utes and SUV’s, the team can help to improve your driving experience by working with a network of partners to develop the best software on the market. A tune from Alt Tune will increase power, increase torque, increase throttle response and in many cases, decrease fuel consumption. “Most vehicles can be done in house via a remote PC connection to the team in the North Island, meaning no trip out of town or awaiting a technician to visit Marlborough,” Darrell says.

Minimising our enviromental impact Caring for the environment is something that Mag & Turbo Blenheim takes very seriously, and recycling their waste tyre product is extremely important. Darrell Bate has been involved with other local industry professionals, and the Marlborough District Council, to create an action group to ensure scrap tyre collection is done in a responsible manner. “There are a few cowboys out there that will collect tyres for a fee, before piling them up on areas of land with no intention of recycling them. In turn, this can become a major environmental and fire risk,” he says. Darrell says that ethically, tyre retailers and importers really need to hold some responsibility for the correct disposal and recycling processes of end of life tyres. Tyre Collection Services ensure that every tyre taken by them will be transported to their

Christchurch operation where they get baled, packed into containers and shipped to overseas (currently India) recycling plants. There, specialist equipment is used to separate the rubber, steel and petroleum based components for reuse in roading or runway surfaces, playground matting, general mats, shoe soles or anything rubber. “Dumping waste tyre product into landfill is just unacceptable nowadays and as responsible retailers, it is what we should all be considering, especially as part of an environmentally proud country,” Darrell says. Do not be afraid to ask where your old tyres are going next time you get them changed. Make sure they care about it Marlborough District Council solid waste manager, Alec McNeil, says responsible used tyre management has been a goal of those involved with the

production, distribution, retail and recovery of tyres for a considerable period of time. “The Government have recently reinvigorated interest in a national solution by looking at previous work done under the Tyrewise project. This project would see tyres included in a product stewardship approach

that would link all parts of the supply chain to optimise tyre recovery and fund this through a user pays charging system. “Having a national solution for tyres would level the playing field across the sector and mitigate any problems associated with tyre management.”

Congratulations to Mag & Turbo Blenheim, doing it right for 5 years, From the team at Towbar Express Ltd.

Bagpipes and tunes By student reporter Frances Chin

In addition to being a normal Year 13 student at Marlborough Girls’ College, Emma Fuller has an interesting hobby - she plays the bagpipes for the Blenheim and Districts Highland Pipe Band. Emma comes from a long line of bagpipe players. Her grandfather, Ian Campbell from Oamaru, started playing at age 14. Ian would bike 6km each way to practice – Weston to Oamaru and return, to practice his bagpipes, then played for the North Otago Highland Pipe Band. Emma’s uncle and aunt also played the bagpipes, and her mother and aunt played the drum and the three girls all learned highland dancing. Their mother made sure everyone was “all dressed correctly”, she says. Emma enjoyed listing to her grandfather playing the bagpipes, something he did for 55 years. “I always knew he played,” she says. “I heard him play quite a few times.” However, she admits to having had no interest towards playing the bag-pipes. “I didn’t really know what they were.” One day, Emma thought she would go and observe a music practice. “I decided that I’d go and have a look.” The practice changed her mind towards the bagpipes. “I thought I’ll start and see how I go,”

Emma says. “Two and a half years later I’m still playing”. Emma started learning on a chanter, a recorder like instrument. Eventually she progressed to the bagpipes and aims to practice her bagpipes every day, in addition to having a two hour practice with the band on Thursdays. Emma says the hardest part of playing the bagpipes is not the breathing, but the muscle strength needed. You need to “be big enough,” to hold the bagpipes, she says. It can also be difficult to play for a long time. “Your lips go kind of numb” she says. Despite this, Emma enjoys playing the bag-pipes, especially “the challenge of it.” Emma played at the Blenheim Christmas Parade, and at the up and coming NMIT graduation. She also plans to attend a summer school in Wellington, run by the Royal New Zealand Pipe Band’s Association. She will be “learning the pipes,” and “how to get tunes off and all that,” she says. Emma has also played live on More FM. “Yeah, they encouraged me to play on air,” she says. Emma enjoys playing with the Blenheim and Districts Highland Pipe Band. “We’re hoping to go to nationals in Invercargill in March next year,” Emma says. However, it’s not easy, marching in the outdoors while playing

an instrument. Recently the Blenheim and Districts Highland Pipe Band played in the (very wet and rainy) Picton Christmas parade. Although Emma’s grandfather passed away when she was seven, he is with her in other ways. Her bagpipes once belonged to her uncle

Gordie, and the box that holds them was built by her grandfather. Ian was also a professional joiner, and when Emma’s family found the box after he passed away, they found it was unfinished. They didn’t know who or what he had built it for, but it was obvious that time and care had gone into it.

“He was a perfectionist,” says Emma’s mother, Robyn Fuller. “The family got the box finished off and then they sent it up to me,” Emma says. “My bagpipes fit perfectly.”

CACTUS puts Marlborough teens to work By Aimee O’Hagan

A collection of Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ College students have spent the last seven weeks getting up in the early hours of the morning to participate in a series of arduous physical challenges, but are now free to sleep in for as long as they’d like. The group of 26 teens have just finished taking part in the 2019 Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit Support (CACTUS) programme, which is held biannually by Marlborough Youth Trust and officers from the Blenheim Police Station. Those involved in the challenging bootcamp spent three morn-

ings a week (from 6am until 7am) this term getting fit, developing resilience, learning leadership skills, and discovering how to effectively work as a team. The programme is based on military disciplines, techniques, and training values. Saturday saw the year nine to thirteen students throwing themselves into the final but most difficult morning of the programme yet, working together from 7am until 12noon to complete a series of intense physical activities, including a log lift and the infamous firetruck pull. The day was concluded with a graduation and prizegiving.

CACTUS participants finish the log lift by placing the log in a trailer. Students taking part in the firetruck pull.

Police urge firearm owners to take final buy-back opportunity By Celeste Alexander

Last week Federated Farmers vice president, Scott Adams, appealed to Marlborough firearm owners to take advantage of the prohibited firearms amnesty and buy-back before its deadline on December 20. On the back of this Crime Prevention Group Sergeant, Mike Porter, is also encouraging people who own prohibited firearms and/or parts, to attend the final event being held in Blenheim on December 18. “If people have prohibited firearms they should take the opportunity

to hand them in before the 20th of December. If they are caught with them post that date, they run the real risk of prosecution, having the firearms taken and destroyed and the possibility of being revoked as a firearms licence holder. “There has been so much information and publicity passed about the changes, that claiming ignorance or waiting for a law change won’t wash. “Police have always pursued people unlawfully in possession of firearms and this will not change,” he says. Asked if he had expected more people to attend the buy-back events,

Sergeant Porter says a last minute rush to hand in prohibited firearms “would not be unexpected”. “As with a lot of things people either wait and see how things work, can’t meet the dates for the buy-back, or just leave it until the last minute. We are prepared for that eventuality. “We have seen what we expected (firearms) to see. I can only recall one firearm that has been presented at the buy-back that stumped the armourers, and only because it was a brand not known to them,” he says. With only one event left before the

deadline, Police say the response from locals has been “mixed”. “We have not faced a lot of negativity but instead a mixture of reactions; mainly in the early periods it was the reaction of them not knowing how the handover would occur – that fear of the unknown,” Sergeant Porter says. “One man said to me he was just testing the process to see how it went, and as it was a positive process he returned with more items. “There have been those who are frustrated at giving up a weapon they enjoyed and had looked after

for years. There has been surprise displayed by those when they realised that they received a higher price for their firearm, magazine or part than they expected. “We have had people leave the buy-back and getting more than they expected, or finding out a part is also worth something, then returning with more firearms or parts/magazines,” he says. EVENT: Blenheim Christmas Parade

Saturday afternoon saw the Blenheim Christmas Parade take place in Blenheim’s CBD. Not only did many Marlburians come to watch the parade, but there were also plenty of people who featured on floats and put in lots of work behind the scenes.

New exercise programme for Parkinson’s to launch By Celeste Alexander

Last month Picton woman, Christine Finlow-Bates, shared her story of being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and how she believes exercise is “the best medicine”. Her message was backed up by Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Society community educator and registered nurse, Janine Ready, who says while there’s no cure, the right kind of exercise has “significant benefits for neurological conditions like Parkinson’s, MS, stroke and brain injury”. “Research over the past 10 years now shows evidence based information that with condition specific training with higher intensity can slow the progression of Parkinson’s,” she says. Well, the great news about this is that thanks to seed funding donated by Masonic Lodges, Lodge Eckford and Lodge Waitohi, a specialised exercise programme is now being launched right here in Blenheim. Janine came up with the idea to bring ‘Exercise is Medicine’ to the region, a programme which has already been rolled out in Auckland and more recently Wellington. Blenheim will be the third location in New Zealand to provide the Exercise is Medicine programme, something Janine is excited about. But it’s not a project she’s worked on alone. It’s been made possible due to a partnership between Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Society and the Stadium 2000. Stadium CEO, Rob Maclean, says

A cheque for $8617 was presented to the Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Society - Marlborough NZ by Masonic Lodges; Eckford Lodge and the Waitohi Lodge. Eckford Lodge master, Buks Lundt, and Waitohi Lodge master, George Stables, handed the cheque over to Parkinson's exercise class instructor, Deborah Dalliessi, and the Society's community educator and nurse, Janine Ready. Watching on from behind are Stadium 2000 staff. Absent: Freemasons, Chris Williams and obscured at rear, Craig Hammond.

it’s an opportunity for them to see the benefits for themselves. “The Stadium is really interested in seeing if it can take its health and fitness centre and group fitness to the next level in terms of research-based best exercise practice for health conditions. “Having Tim Webster along from Exercise as Medicine was a great opportunity for our staff and trainers from other facilities and we are grateful for the support of Marlborough MS and Parkinson’s

Society”. The stadium, as well as the Clubs of Marlborough fitness centre will have fitness professionals who will be trained to deliver this programme with the appropriate physical training and exercise options for the people in Marlborough with Parkinson’s. “I’m ecstatic to have the opportunity to bring this to Blenheim and am already looking at the next phase which focuses on MS,” Janine says.

To enable this programme to launch Janine made a presentation to Eckford Lodge two months ago, explaining the benefits of this programme and asking for assistance with seed funding. Master of the Lodge, Buks Lundt, says they were happy to offer funding and teamed up with the Waitohi Lodge. “We know it works too,” Buks says. “We have people within the lodge also seeing benefits from exercise with health related issues.

Sailing champs set for Picton this weekend This weekend, December 14 and 15, will see a large regatta event being held in Picton, with a number of regional and South Island championships being held. The 2019 Nelson Marlborough regionals will take place as well as the 2019 Zephyr South Island Champs, 2019 Regional Open Skiff Regatta and the 2019 A Class South Island Champs. All will be hosted by the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club and will see over 80 sailors and 15 boat classes. Races will be run on several courses, both inner and outer harbour, which is a challenge for the yacht club but one they are embracing. The QCYC’s new yacht club is still under construction, however once complete it will see more water related events make their way to Picton, beginning with the Zephyr Nationals in early February 2020 and the Ranking Optimist Regatta a couple of weeks later.

“We decided to give a portion and Waitohi gave a portion. We then approached our Grand Lodge and asked if they could match our donation; which they were happy to do. “We were very proud to present Janine with a cheque for $8617,” Buks says. Janine says this seed funding will now enable the training to be carried out and the programme ready to be launched in March 2020.
