Drop 9000ft Calling on locals to skydive for charity By Celeste Alexander

Would you jump out of a plane for a good cause? If you answered yes, then the Graeme Dingle Foundation is waiting to sign you up to be one of their ‘daring droppers’ as part of a local fundraiser, Drop for Youth Marlborough. Already a number of people have signed up including local business teams, a college principal, a school teacher and people from various aquaculture industries around Marlborough. In fact, it’s the aquaculture industry participants who are challenging other industries to take part. Continued on page 2. Skydive and raise money Continued from page 1. The Drop for Youth Marlborough is one of the Graeme Dingle Foundation’s more daring fundraisers, where participants plummet 9000 feet in a breathtaking skydive to help support tamariki around Marlborough. Regional manager for the Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough, Kelvin Watt, says the event will take place on February 22, 2020 with Abel Tasman Skydive and has already attracted some very positive interest. “It’s a bit of banter, fun and a challenge for people to get out of their comfort zone while raising some money for Marlborough youth,” he says. Originally this event was launched in 2013 as an abseil, called Drop Your Boss. One was even held

during a local Bragato conference with winemakers who did an abseil at the theatre. In 2015 Kelvin says they decided to “up the challenge” and change it to a skydive. “We named it Drop for Youth and it went really well. Over that period national office got on board and adopted the idea as well and now each region does their own. “It fits in well with our programme which promotes role modelling,” Kelvin says. Someone else who was instrumental in its success was Sanfords manager, Ted Culley. In 2015 when we did the skydive Ted was immediately up for the challenge and of the $45,000 we raised that year, Ted raised $18,000 himself.”

“These programmes work wonders in our local schools. As a parent with school-aged children I think it’s so important to support foundations such as Graeme Dingle who care so much about our kids,’’ Grant says. Kelvin says the challenge has now been set to get other industries signed up. “These guys are really engaged with it so let’s get some other industries on board. It would be great to see a cross-industry representation from wine through to travel,” he says. Signing up is simple; to find out more and to register email Marlborough@dinglefoundation.org.nz A Givealittle page is then set up for participants then all they need to do is raise a minimum of $1000. The skydive takes place on February 22, 2020 with Abel Tasman Skydive.

This year the local aquaculture industry has embraced the Drop for Youth skydive and have signed up a good number of participants. “In September when Blenheim hosted the big aquaculture conference, we went along with the Graeme Dingle Foundation kiwi and spoke on stage about the fundraiser and how it supports our local kids. “That day we had a bunch of people sign up; some from King Salmon and the Marine Farming Association to name a few, which was a great response. According to Paul McIntyre and Grant Lovell of New Zealand King Salmon, they signed up for Drop for Youth as it’s a “fantastic cause”. “It’s a fantastic cause and the benefits are endless. You can’t put a price on our future generations,’’ Paul says.

Omaka Flying Circus launches A new initiative has seen the founding of a new organisation in Marlborough, designed to help those aviation enthusiasts with a particular interest in WWI aircraft to find ways in which they can live their ‘Biggles’ dreams in an affordable and manageable way. It’s named ‘Omaka Flying Circus’ and already two successful meetings have been held; one at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre when four flyable WWI aircraft were presented on the grass corral to the three dozen people in attendance. All of the aircraft displayed on the grass were owned by local individuals or groups who have already followed their passion for aircraft of this era. The second meeting held on November 6, took place in a hangar workshop, where work is now underway on an initiative to build six early Great War aircraft in a group-build environment

Foster homes needed for kittens By Celeste Alexander

Preparations are beginning for the annual ‘kitten season’ at the SPCA Marlborough Centre near Renwick, with staff appealing for more foster homes. Centre manager, Donna Sologar, says kittens and pregnant cats are already starting to arrive at the centre, including some which are scared and wild. “The quarantine area is already at capacity. Some of the 18 cages are even housing new litters. “It would be nice to give these kittens a nicer space to thrive rather than a caged environment. With foster homes they receive more attention and hands-on love which is good for timid kittens. “Some kittens we receive have had no people interaction at all and come to us petrified, so in order to get them ready for adoption we really need people who have the time to spend with them,” she says. Kittens aren’t ready for adoption until they are at least eight weeks old and

have been de-sexed. “When they come to us really young, and often wild, this is where foster homes play an important role in preparing kittens for adoption,” Donna adds. The main criteria for foster homes include having a spare room for safety and containment. If there are other pets in the home they must be up to date with their vaccinations and can be kept away when necessary. Plus, those fostering kittens and pregnant cats need to either own their home or have landlord permission. “We provide everything they need to foster including food, kitty litter and bedding,” Donna says. When mentioning the supplies provided to foster homes, Donna also says over the kitten season, which runs from now through to April, the centre appreciates donations of kitten food, bedding, old towels and toys. “Even adult dog food is greatly appreciated,” Donna says. “Sometimes it’s nice for the dogs to have some wet food. “As you can imagine during kitten

season we go through a lot of supplies, so we appreciate any support,” she adds. For more information or to offer to be a foster home, call in to the centre or phone to speak with staff. The centre will be closed on public holidays.

Robitussin, an 11month old female tabby, has lived most of her life at the SPCA Marlborough centre, and is hoping she will find a forever home by Christmas.

Laying outside, stretched out in the sun while watching the birds flit about the surrounding trees, is a favourite past-time for SPCA Marlborough resident feline Robitussin. The 11-year-old female tabby/white cat has lived most of her life at the centre, after arriving as a wild kitten. As happy as Robitussin is to be lazily hanging about

Centre manager, Donna Sologar, says Robitussin arrived as an “angry, hissy little kitten” but has since become a happy and playful addition to the cats there. “When new cats arrive she’s the first to run and greet them,” Donna says. “She’s come a long way to progress from being wild; though at times she can be a little timid,

but she has a lot of love to give to someone who is willing to adopt her.” As time has gone on Robitussin has watched her feline friends be adopted, so it’s the hope of the centre’s staff that her turn will come, and soon. “We would love to see her adopted and living in her forever home before Christmas,” Donna says. “If anyone is interested in meeting her, please call into the centre.”

Principal Rural Fire Officer for Marlborough Kaikoura FENZ, John Foley, says the restricted fire season comes into effect on December 20, and is reminding residents to be vigilant with burn piles and to take care of excess vegetation around sheds and buildings now. “For people who have already had burns on their property they need to go back and check these piles for any residual heat and embers. “We’ve already had a couple of instances where burn piles had reignited two to three weeks after, and when people had assumed they were out. “Looks can be deceiving so open up it up and dig through with a shovel. It won’t take long for the summer heat and winds to get a fire going again,” he says. John says for anyone still planning to burn small piles of garden waste or vegetation there’s only a small window of opportunity before the restricted fire season kicks in. “Once the pile has burned down it’s safer to spread the ashes out to

“Another tip is to avoid pulling your vehicle over in an area with long dry grass. The vehicle’s hot exhaust can very quickly ignite the grass and the hotter the day, the less time it takes to start a fire,” he says. For more information visit https://www.marlborough.govt.nz

Keeping safe from burglars By community constable Russ Smith

Burglars have recently been active again in Blenheim, with a house on Main Road South in the St Andrews area the subject of an attempted burglary over the weekend. The burglar has possibly entered the property from the riverbank, first attempting entry to the house by smashing a bedroom window, but finding it was double-glazed. They have then tried to force a rear door to the garage, causing damage but failing to gain entry. The parting attempt was to a rear door to the house, again causing damage, but failing to gain entry. Police have also dealt

Russ Smith

with a series of burglaries in recent weeks in the Burleigh area. A commercial premises was burgled in Waters Avenue over the weekend with offenders forcing entry and searching through rooms. The victim is still assessing what was stolen. The Burleigh Dairy has been broken into twice in recent weeks and just west of this location, the De Brood

bakery trailer in Maxwell Road has also been broken into twice. With warm weather on the way, people are inclined to leave windows and sometimes doors open at home, and to leave garages and sheds insecure. Burglars tend to target properties that are left insecure as it’s much easier to steal from a place with easy access. The Police are encouraging everyone to be security conscious in the lead up to and over the festive and holiday period. Please lock up before you leave home, even if you’re away for short periods. You’re far less likely to be the victim of a burglary if you keep your home and buildings secure.

Search and Rescue teams were kept busy over the weekend tracking down and rescuing people who had made poor decisions to go into the great outdoors despite the very well-publicised weather forecasts that clearly showed bad weather for this period. If you are a tramper, hunter, boatie or into orienteering, mountain-biking or

any other activity that takes you into the great outdoors, please check the weather forecast before you go. If it looks remotely like conditions will be unfavourable, postpone your plans and wait for settled weather. It’s not worth dying over a poor decision. If you’re planning to be boating, or heading into a remote area you should

always carry a personal locator beacon, something like an EPIRB, which can be activated in an emergency to guide rescue teams to your location. These devices dramatically reduce the time search teams spend locating people and increase chances of survival by giving a clear indication of their location.

New Opaoa River Bridge build almost complete

Community Projects Fund open for applications

Work on the new Opaoa River Bridge has been progressing well with much of the bridge build almost finished, the NZ Transport Agency says. The new piles, piers, abutments and headstocks are all complete, most of the bridge beams are in place, and nearly all of the bridge deck spans are concreted. The next phase involves completing the bridge edge barriers and expansion joints, and asphalting the bridge deck. Work on both approaches to the bridge is also underway. Retaining walls are being built on the south approach and earthworks, stormwater works and roading construction have started on the north approach. As soon as the build is finished in early 2020, northbound traffic will be diverted on to the new bridge, so work on the approaches can be completed. Southbound traffic will remain on the old bridge until the approach work is largely complete. It will be quiet on site between 20 December 2019 and 6 January 2020 as work stops for the Christmas holiday period. However, as it is still a construction zone, traffic management will remain in place

Are you a member of an organisation or group that represents a small township or community in Marlborough? If so, now’s the time for you to apply for some funding towards your next infrastructure project. Applications for the Small Township Programme’s 2020 Community Projects Fund for small, low cost projects on outdoor public spaces are now open. To be eligible to apply your project needs to be on outdoor public space, supported by the community, able to be achieved within the next year and cost less than $10,000. Examples of projects include improving walking and cycling access and safety, landscaping and planting, developing an outdoor community space, improving outdoor recreation opportunities like a bike track or directional signage to key points of interest or interpretation/historic signs. Priority will be given to projects

with a reduced speed limit. Motorists are asked to please stick to the reduced speed limit when travelling through the site for everyone’s safety. More information: https://nzta.govt.nz/ projects/new-opaoa-river-bridge

that best meet the Small Township Programme’s objectives. If you are thinking of applying for funding we encourage you to contact our Community Project Coordinator, Heather Graham, Ph: 03 520 7583 or email: heather.graham@marlborough. govt.nz to discuss your ideas or the application process prior to submitting. Applications must be submitted to Heather by email or by post: Marlborough District Council, PO Box 443, Blenheim 7240, before 5.00 pm on Monday 2 March 2020. Please note that this fund is not available to Blenheim, Picton or Waikawa as these areas are funded differently, or the community is already on the full small township programme. Be a good dog owner this summer Many Blenheim dog owners exercise their animals at the Taylor River reserve, a shared exercise area for dogs and people. The river banks are the one area in town where dogs can run off leash, but they must be under control at all times. With summer here, dog control officers will be stepping up patrols, including at holiday spots around Picton and the Sounds. Remember there are strict rules about where you can and can’t take dogs in the Sounds - check the DOC website for details: www.doc.govt.nz/parks-andrecreation/know-before-you-go/dogaccess/ Please clean up after your dog in all public places; there are still too many owners who don’t pick up. Marlborough’s Dog Control Bylaw requires that all dog owners must remove dog poo and dispose of it appropriately. Owners are required to carry a practical means of removing faeces while the dog is in a public place. A breach of the bylaw carries a fine of $300. A Smart Map on the Council’s website shows dog exercise areas where dogs may be off leash, as well as where they can be

walked on a lead and where they are not permitted: https://maps.marlborough.govt. nz/smartmaps Temperatures are rising and hot cars can be extremely harmful to pets if they are left alone. Please do not leave your dog unattended in a car. If you’re going away consider the use of boarding kennels rather than leaving your dog alone at home, to ensure that they get plenty of exercise and they don’t bark while you’re away.

Positive Ageing – Don’t be scammed this festive season New versions of old scams are constantly appearing, especially at this time of year. It’s important you know how to recognise a scam before it’s too late. Scammers may make contact by email, phone call or through Facebook, pretending to be from a well-known organisation, bank or government agency. If you feel at all suspicious, follow your instinct. Hang up the phone, don’t open dubious emails and don’t be tricked into making a payment, or giving over financial or personal information. Remember, legitimate banks or businesses

do not ask for passwords and bank account numbers. It’s also important that you never send money to claim a ‘prize’ as this is also a scam. The phone call claiming that a computer virus is infecting your home computer is another scam - hang up and never reveal a password or any other personal details. If you suspect a scam make sure you report it to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment - Consumer Protection, Ph: 0508 638 723, available 8.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Friday, and 9.00 am to 5.00 pm at weekends.

The Sun Thank you A big thank you to the person who found my wallet at the roundabout near the warehouse last week and took it to the police station. It is good to know that there is still honest and caring people in the world. You deserve only the best.

Show some consideration To the guy in the red Suzuki Swift who drives around Marlborough like a maniac, perhaps you should show some consideration to other drivers, or at least to your employers whose brand is on your door.

Any suggestions? The Neighbours Cat. There is no excuse, but I can see why the odd cat gets shot. We don’t own a cat but we are always cleaning up cat poo. I am sure all the local cats have decided to do their business in our garden. I can’t figure out what the attraction is but it must be the nice soft soil or something. Any suggestions?

Weird We get a letter from SPARK. “Every now and then, we look over our plans and pricing to help us make sure you’re getting great value from us. But to keep things fair for everyone that means increasing prices too.” We’re ok with what we have now so what’s this “fair for everyone” bit? Another price rise the only change. Are we donating to charity? Weird.

Not your right Re: Pedestrians. Does anyone remember the rule about the diamonds marked on road by pedestrian crossings? If the car is after the diamond (closer to crossing) vehicles have right of way. Outside of the diamond vehicle must stop. It is not your right to walk out and expect vehicles to stop for you.

Nice and helpful

Thank you

Just got home from a visit to the dump, what a nice helpful friendly group of guys working there.

Just want to say thank you to the lovely lady who delivers our Sun newspaper on Friday on Whitney st. She is always so cheerful and makes sure our paper is delivered without trying to ram it into the letter slot. Well done.

You’re late Late for plane take-off. All you plonkers saying ”I was only a minute” Well have you ever thought 300 people being a ”minute” late in a flight. Read your ticket it tells you all. Don’t pat yourself on back for getting out of bed early, you were late... admit it. Why should all others sit on plane waiting for you. 299 people early & you “rock up” saying... Sorry? Get a bleedin life. Don’t say it was only Regional flight same principle.

Totally agree I absolutely agree with “Be On Time” in last week’s edition. Guarantee people would be on time if there was a gold pot to collect. Just set alarms or whatever to make sure you’re on time for your flight. Waiting for a late passenger is a scourge for those on board waiting especially those getting a connecting flight. Come on those offenders - BE MORE CONSIDERATE

Destroyed confidence Charles Street Package waiting for a courier pick up. To the person who stole this you have destroyed my confidence in courier leaving anything and it is such a nuisance having to collect it myself. Hope you were disappointed in the contents.

Why so long? Great to see the community hall in Ward about to get a full makeover. Why has it taken 3 long years to fix a predominantly council owned hall of real values to a small community when the sample council happily used OUR money to fully repay millions of theatre debt for a building they don’t own! Who pulls the strings around here? A few wealthy theatre attendees as the rest of us can’t afford to go!

Report To the person who was treated rudely at airport by Air New Zealand staff. Report her to officials. They’ll deal with her.

Merry Christmas Merry Xmas and a wonderful New Year 2020 to all my Marlburian’s living and working here. Thank you for all your hard work Vineyard workers Ni-van boys, and all other ethnic workers. Hope we all keep thriving and make Marlborough best region in NZ with its safe reputation, kindness and high human development. Thank you everyone love you all.

Great vibes Three thank you’s: to the lovely staff at Akbabas for delivering my food to the car when my son was asleep. The man who found my phone and returned it and to the knitters bringing some Xmas magic to the town centre. Great holiday season vibes people!

Eye catching The trees and bollards in Queen St, C.B.D area look great. Thank you to the crafts people who have made the area look so bright and festive. It’s eye catching.

Support local Don’t go to the Nelson market for your fruit and vegetables, support your own local Saturday market at the railway station car park. Plenty of vegetables there and lots of other bargains.

Amazing produce Somewhat amazed by the negative comments about our local Farmer’s Market. I went on Sunday to stock up on fruit and veggies and got some lovely new potatoes and other fresh veggies and punnets of new season’s blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. As you get nearer Christmas you will find an amazing lot of fresh produce available at the market. Good luck to the person driving to Nelson to buy their veggies. What a waste of Petrol. If you live in Marlborough how about buying from the local growers and supporting your community.

Sad really You’d hardly know it’s Xmas in Blenheim. Looking around the streets. And the supermarkets this year have very little choice of boxed biscuits. Wonder why? Sad really.

Traffic lights You must be joking!! I have come from a city with traffic lights and if you want to know what a holdup is like install them. For me keep putting in roundabouts Blenheim, I love them.

Lemon thief Beware there is a lemon thief in town. Two trees absolutely stripped at Tua Marina over the past few days. Now no lemons for friends and family this Christmas.

Yarnbombing To the complainers, am I not permitted to have fun with my craft, but am limited to helping the needy? Surprisingly enough I have capacity to do both. Who is selfish here?

Thank you Thank you to the person/people who have decorated the Christmas tree on the crossing near the railway station. Made me smile this morning even had presents under it!

Artists find niche in ‘Eden’ By student reporter Frances Chin

“It’s been incredible,” Vonny Paul says of the recent opening of her Art Gallery ‘Return to Eden.’ Located opposite the Saint Clair cellar door on Selmes Road near Blenheim, Vonny has a clear vision for her gallery. “I wanted to have a shop that fits in with the vision of Return to Eden,” Vonny says. “The gallery is clean, green, and environmentally friendly. A place of rest.” Vonny’s goal for the gallery is to “encourage and support local artists.” “It’s hard to break into the industry and it’s hard to put yourself out there. “I want my gallery to instil confidence in local artists, and help them gain a foothold in the industry. I love the fact that people can come here and paint and then put their art in the gallery. “The idea is to have artists in Marlborough working together, not just Pakeha but all nations. My heart is to help all cultures learn from

each other,” Vonny says. All of the art and craftwork is local and many artists are still contacting Vonny to have their work in the gallery. In addition to established Marlborough artists such as Brian Badock and Walter Scott, Return to Eden displays new artists such as Kelly Allenet, who “does anything from macramé to pottery.” Artist Linda Leger Kula has a display of her jewellery made out of tapa cloth and coconut husk. Resident weaver Abbey Kayle is completing a weaving course at Omaka Marae, and bassist and school principal, Dave Pauline, has a beautiful Rimu guitar on display. “All the artists have been amazing,” says Vonny. “It’s a gift to get to know people more.” Vonny and her fam ily moved to Marlborough about 15 years ago. Despite moving “for the education,” her sons left Blenheim for the Auckland music scene. They form three quarters of the popular indie band ‘The Daily J’.

Vonny was surrounded by art from a young age, as her mother was an artist. On their stove there were always “boiling pots of different concoctions,” that her mother would use to dye with. From her mother Vonny gets her artistic sensibilities. ‘It really passed down,” Vonny says. “Mess is life!” Vonny describes her art as textured and loves oils and impressionism. Vonny’s first project as an artist was a portrait of her sister she did as a child. “My sister was watching TV. I was bored so I started drawing a portrait of her.” Vonny and her parents were surprised by how well the portrait turned out. “It was good!” Vonny plans for the shop to act as a gallery during the summer, and then to focus on teaching during the winter. “It’s still the early days.” The resident artists often get together and brainstorm ideas. Her current theme is ‘summer’. “I normally get inspiration in the middle of the night,” she smiles.

Marlborough Singers’ performance of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ the perfect Christmas show By Aimee O’Hagan

2019 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 4X4 $70,000

Vonny Paul, owner of the new Return to Eden Art Gallery.

The weather may have been bleak last Sunday afternoon, but the auditorium of Blenheim’s ASB Theatre was lit up with a choir of angels: aka, the Marlborough Singers. They were performing one of the most celebrated musical works of all time, ‘Messiah’, which was written by famous 18th century composer, George Frideric Handel, in 1741. The magnificent oratario is made up of over 53 movements (songs or parts) which gracefully string together to create a commentary of the life of Jesus Christ, from his birth to his ascension. Performing Handel’s Mes-

siah was a timely move on the local choral society’s part, especially considering Christmas is just around the corner. In a modern world struck by commercialism – especially throughout this festive season – it’s safe to say that choral music imparting the orginal tale of the holiday provides a necessary breath of fresh air. There’s not enough of this kind of story-telling anymore. And I can say, with confidence, that the Marlborough Singers definitely paid homage to Handel’s iconic musical handiwork. Accompanied by professional opera singers and

powerful soloists, Wade Kermot (bass), local Elin Tomos (mezzo soprano), Declan Cudd (tenor), and Emma Pearson (soprano), the choir’s collective sound was effectively enhanced and made for a splendid show. Emma Pearson, in particular, knocked my socks off with her ability to reach multiple exceptionally high notes. The entire group of vocalists – both the community choir of 60 plus locals and the four professionals – were very much worthy of the standing ovation they got at the end of the concert. Bravo, Marlborough Singers, I hope to hear you sing again.

Renwick School principal, Simon Heath, and Renwick Community Memorial Hall committee chairperson, Murray Newman, pictured earlier this year when they announced the hall's upgrade had the green light. Scott Construction Marlborough has commenced work which is set to finish at the end of April, 2020. File photo.

Renwick hall upgrade begins By Celeste Alexander

Construction has begun on the Renwick Community Memorial Hall’s long anticipated upgrade, and residents can look forward to seeing the finished result at the end of April 2020. Scott Construction Marlborough is carrying out the work which will see feature earthquake strengthening, an attractive street entrance and frontage with landscaping, upgraded toilet facilities, a larger committee room, a commercial kitchen makeover, outdoor foyer area and all the seating replaced. The flooring will receive a facelift, a new sound system installed and a fresh

coat of paint. The hall is located beside Renwick School so the main gate from the carpark to the school is closed due to construction, and half of the carpark fenced off. Plans for the hall’s upgrade was first announced in 2012 and a few years later a smaller amount of $200,000 was granted by the Ministry of Education which enabled the committee to put together a business plan, feasibility studies, and architectural designs. It also contributed towards the installation of a new heating and cooling system which was put in place 12 months ago, alongside funding from the Friends

of Renwick School support group’s Twilight Carnival fundraising. Then in June the committee received a further $447,671 from the New Zealand Lottery Grants Boa rd, adding to the $400,000 secured from the Ministry of Education in 2017. The hall’s committee has been through a challenging 11-year-long process to get to this point however chairperson, Murray Newman, and committee member, Simon Heath, are thrilled to see the construction begin. “When the hall upgrade is finished, it will be something that Renwick deserves and so needs,” Murray says. “Watch this space.”

Summer Dining Top food in top locations Ask anyone what their favourite thing is about summer dining, and most would probably say ‘enjoying the seasonal produce’. This is the time of year where produce really blooms. Fresh berries, herbs and summer vegetables... all things make dishes colourful, flavoursome and delicious. Many local restaurants have, or are in the process of rolling out their summer menus with new and exciting combinations ready to excite the palate. Introducing the Sun’s ‘Summer Dining’ lineup. The Lemongrass: The Lemongrass restaurant on Maxwell Road has created a menu that puts the best of Asia on a plate. Starring dishes with a traditional yet modern twist on Thai and Vietnamiese cuisine, The Lemongrass has focused on fresh, lean and green. Bamboo Garden Restaurant: From classic Chinese to Thai and Japanese dishes, Bamboo Garden Restaurant embraces the richness and diversity of Asian cuisine. With their top chefs from all over Asia and our commitment to using the highest quality and freshest of ingredients, the menu is sure to deliver new and exciting taste to your palate. It’s also the perfect location to host fundraising dinners. Book a table by phoning or going online and order from Bamboo Garden Restaurant and The Lemongrass. And just when you thought takeaway meals were quick and convenient, local restaurant owner Bu-nga Krataitong has introduced an online ordering system for her restaurants Bamboo Garden and The Lemongrass. How it works; simply visit the restaurants’ websites and along the top there is a tab ‘Order Online’. Click and scroll through the menu, selecting the dishes you wish to order along the way.

Picton Yacht Club: With spectacular vistas over Marlborough Sounds, the Picton Yacht Club Hotel is a sought after destination for both the leisure and business traveller. private space With an expanded large influence on healthy, fat free and fibre rich food, complimentary menus and our exceptional beverage list of award winning wines, beers and spirits – Slip Inn is your perfect venue of choice. Thai 9: One of the reasons why Thai food is so enjoyable is because it provides the perfect balance of flavours. Whether it’s sweet, salty, spicy or sour that you prefer, Thai food provides the ultimate combination of these flavours. It has taken over what was formerly Poppy Thai, and with a fresh coat of paint, an exciting new menu and a spacious dining area, 2019 has been an exciting new beginning for Thai 9 owners Nichcha Wararatanasupa and Ping Muanwong. The chefs make their own sauces which enables them to be gluten free, as well as making their own selection of icecream flavours. The menu has a delicious selection of appetisers, curries, salads and noodle, rice and stir-fried dishes, as well as a kids menu and to finish the meal off – desserts! Most of the menu is gluten free and caters for vegan, vegetarian and keto dietary requirements.

gardening this week When to plant vegetables: By Wally Richards A number of gardeners like to do late plantings if they live in areas not prone to early frosts. Late plantings of sweet corn in January can often result in a second harvest of cobs before winter sets in. Tomatoes sown from seed in December and January should give you more ripe fruit after your earlier plantings have finished. You do not even have to sow seed, as you can strike the laterals (side shoots) to make a new young plant, once it has rooted up. To do this; fill a small pot two thirds full of compost and fill the balance to the top with sand or fine pumice. Remove a lateral which should be about 6cm long and place it into the sand to about the depth of the sand. Moisten down and keep moist. When the plant stands up and shows some new growth then the early roots have formed. If you spray the laterals with Vaporgard a day before you remove them off the

parent plant, you will have a new young tomato plant quicker. When removing laterals off tomatoes or old leaves, it is most important that you do not do this during humid or moist times as a disease can enter the wound and you lose a good plant. Remove laterals on a nice sunny day when the air is dry and as you remove each lateral, spray the wound with Wallys Liquid Copper. It is still not too late to plant seeds of summer crops unless you live in an area prone to very early frosts. Keep the soil moist at all times using non chlorinated water. (Put a filter onto your tap to remove the chlorine) It makes the world of difference and your crops will grow quicker and healthier. Gardeners that use tank water or are fortunate to live in a town/city that does not dose the water supply with this chemical poison, do not have to worry about a filter. If you do not have room for a vegetable plot then use

Believe in the Black Caps once again If the Black Caps are to earn a test series win in Australia over the holiday period, they must be aggressive. This team, currently ranked No 2 in the world behind India is strong, particularly by our standards as battlers who wait for their day in the sun. Kane Williamson’s men must not be intimidated and must not

be satisfied with merely showing up, showing some fight but eventually rolling over. The Black Caps team has flaws, Jeet Raval could not hit a barn door during a day on a farm at this point and Mitchell Santner is not the attacking spinner needed for Aussie pitches. However, these Aussies are beatable too.

They have a specialist captain in Tim Paine, their middle-order is frail once you get past David Warner, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuachagne. Plus, Mitchell Starc’s tricky foot issues may also be playing up. Openers Raval and Tom Latham must see-off the new ball and the Aussie pace attack and Williamson must have an attacking

mindset, especially in the field to try to put pressure on the hosts. None of this Black Caps team has ever played a test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground like they will on Boxing Day. It’s a tall task but this group of players has achieved enough history over the past five years, that another accomplishment would not be shocking.

Veteran Woodley stays optimistic Local Veteran Motorcycle racer Jock Woodley is optimistic of possibilities with the rebuilt 1980 Yamaha TZ350G despite a DNF at the latest race meeting, The Mike Pero Southern Classic, an annual International Motorcycle race meeting held at Levels raceway, Timaru on the weekend of November 30 December 1. Jock, a 2019 Marlborough Sportsman of the Year nominee, was confident of having some great races after qualifying in position two on the grid, in cool and overcast conditions, for the first race of the weekend. Jock was in the lead half way through that first race when he was forced to retire due to a fault in a carburettor. “A DNF is always a disappointment, while leading, more so however, sometimes fate plays a part in this game and it is what it is” he later remarked. So with that carburettor repaired, and of course with the revolving grid system, he had to start from the back of the grid in race two.

“We certainly have work to do.” “From that position I call it ‘threading the needle’ as we have to try and safely get through as much of the field as possible. I managed to fifth place, so overtaking about 30 other bikes in the process. When in that position the onus is on the passing rider to perform the manoeuvre in a safe manner and not to take risks which can endanger other competitors. It’s all about respect” Jock says. He also managed to make good gains while setting up suspension on the bike. Being brought up through the years on bikes with limited suspension technology Jock is now trying to learn the art of tuning the adjustable suspension

for each race track. “We certainly have work to do” he says. Sunday dawned dull and cool but again with promise of sun and heat later in the day. Race three for the weekend, starting from grid number five he managed to win the race taking the lead in lap one and holding that lead through to the end. One of the main requirements at a meeting like the Mike Pero Southern Classic is to have fun, he says. So the organisers ran a special feature ‘Two stroke GP’ race and in that, all of the two stroke race bikes were invited to come together and put on a show for the crowd. Utilising a Le Mans style start, where the mechanics held the bikes at one side of the track while all riders were on the other side, and when the flag drops the riders have to run to the bikes and get going. Jock managed to sprint across the track to the TZ350, which was being held by the owner Lester Ferdinand, and get away first. Even with much more modern bikes in the class he managed to hold that first place for the first full lap of the circuit before the much faster and later model GP bikes started to get by. A great bit of fun was had by all. Jock was up for the last race for the weekend, and again starting on pole position. He managed to get away first and was unchallenged to the chequered flag. When the points were collated it turned out that even though gaining no points from race one of the weekend, he finished in third place for the meeting. After the meeting Jock said “Cath, Lester and I are happy as, considering the DNF in race one. The meeting has been awesome as we learn about this new (1980) bike and its suspension, and we are focused on getting rid of the small gremlins that can be ‘par for the course’ with old machinery. The engine is strong we just need to sort the handling. “Also our Daughter Vanessa was there with grandson Lewis, his first time supporting me at a race

Neil Wagner could be another key. His lion-hearted efforts with the older ball ensure New Zealand has a wicket taker bowling at all times. This team has a fan base which believes they can win, half the battle of playing in Australia is the mental hurdle. If they believe, they can win.

meeting. I can’t help but wonder if he will follow the trend of his Mum, Uncle Mike, Great Uncles John and Bruce and myself, and go racing too”. So now it’s time for Jock to get the bike ready for the Pukekohe Classic meeting on January 30 to February 2 2020, where speed does help but handling is essential as the track is somewhat bumpy. He hopes to put up a good challenge for the Les De-Lacy Trophy

at that meeting. Jock would like to acknowledge the wonderful work the CAMS (Classic Action Motorcycle Sport) club had done with organising the meeting, also the incredible support he personally receives from local businesses Blank Canvas Wines, BASIS, Elite Tyre and Alignment, SIGN images, Beatnik & Co, Picton Tools and Tyres, also PENRITE OILS and PowerFlow Motorcycle Engineering.
