Marathon for his Dad By Celeste Alexander

When Tom Morley’s father was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer last year, he decided to make it his mission to raise awareness for the Cancer Society and the “amazing” support it provides to patients and their families. He has done this by completing one of the country’s biggest and most iconic running events – the 2019 ASB Auckland Marathon, as well as raising $7000 for Cancer Society Marlborough along the way. “My role model is now fighting the same battle that has affected my family throughout several generations. Not only is my family affected, but we know of several others who have friends and family around the world both fighting and having fought this battle,” he says. Continued on page 2. Tom Morley, an aircraft technician at Base Woodbourne, completed the recent ASB Auckland Marathon and raised $7000 for Cancer Society Marlborough.

Tom raises $7k for Cancer Society Continued from page 1. Tom, an aircraft technician working at Base Woodbourne, and a father of four, is close to his father affectionately known by all as ‘Pig’. In fact, the whole family is a tightknit unit which is why Tom and wife Louisa, and their 10-year-old twin daughters, four-year-old daughter and three-year-old son moved from Auckland recently to be closer to one another. Tom’s father was diagnosed in September 2018 and has been going through treatment since. While the cancer diagnosis was a shock to the family, it’s also been a source of inspiration for Tom who says awareness of what the Cancer Society does for families here in Marlborough is “so important”. “The Cancer Society Marlborough influences lives daily and provides amazing support. They are volunteer driven, non-government funded and I wanted to support them. “Running a marathon was always a bucket list goal of mine so when Dad was diagnosed I decided to do it in support of him as well as take the opportunity to create this awareness. “The more people that are aware the greater the impact we can have, and the more support our friends and

family fighting cancer can be provided with,” he says. Tom’s marathon goal was not as simple as just turning up on the day. While he likes to maintain a healthy level of fitness, Tom admits that he was never “marathon fit” and a huge amount of preparation had to go into his training. “I’m not really a runner,’ he laughs. “During the marathon when I reached the 30km mark my calves started to cramp up and I wasn’t sure if I could finish. “I’d done a half marathon in 1hr 50minutes so I thought I could complete it in less than four hours. But that’s the competitive nature in me. “Instead I finished in just under five hours, at 4hr 57minutes. As much as I wanted to reach my goal of under four hours, it wasn’t about the end time. It was about Dad and raising money and awareness,” he says. Adding another level of difficulty to Tom’s marathon challenge was the fact his university study was “ramping up”. “I was juggling my study finals and training on top of family commitments so it was very time consuming. The support of my wife Louise was amazing and from the wider family too. “There was a big group of family

at the finish line waiting for me and afterwards it was pretty emotional. “Probably the most overwhelming though was the support of donations that came through the online donation page. I was determined that the money would come to Marlborough and to watch the donations roll in was really humbling,” he says. Tom, Louisa and his parents Pig and Lorraine Cross met with the staff at the Cancer Society Marlborough office last Friday where they enjoyed a morning tea catch-up and spoke about

Tom’s marathon journey. Manager, Felicity Spencer, says it was “absolutely incredible” to meet the family and to hear why they chose to support the Cancer Society. “I’m just blown away by how much he raised. Everyone knows someone who is affected by cancer and we are so humbled by their gesture,” she says. Next on Tom’s bucket list of challenges? “I’d love to do a charity boxing event, much to the disgust of my mother,” he laughs.

Renwick Local historian and Marlborough Heritage education manager, John Orchard, will be leading a launch trip next month that essentially commemorates 250 years since Captain James Cook's arrival in the Queen Charlotte Sounds.

In Captain Cook’s footsteps By Aimee O’Hagan

“People will stand there, close their eyes, smell the bush, listen to the birds and the sea, and feel like they were there – in the past.” Want to visit the places where British explorer, Captain James Cook, stood many years ago and immerse yourself in rich New Zealand history? Marlborough Museum is offering an amazing opportunity to experience the journey of a lifetime: the chance to explore the Queen Charlotte Sounds on a tourist launch – visiting various places that were significant to Cook’s exploration and mapping of New Zealand back in 1770 – and to find out an abundance of extraordinary facts from local historian and

Marlborough Heritage Education manager at Marlborough Museum, John Orchard (QSM), among other specialists. Although the trip has been held mostly every third year for three decades, this adventure is set to be extra special. “The trip was postponed in February this year because we know the significance of January 15, 2020,” John says. “It’s normally held on a Saturday or Sunday so people will be free of work commitments, but next year’s trip will be held on a Wednesday because that will be the exact day Cook’s ship, HMB Endeavour, arrived in the Sounds 250 years ago. “The Tuia 250 flotilla, which visited Picton last month, did a

good job of informing the public of the significance of the upcoming anniversary prior to next year’s celebrations. “ According to John, the tour runs for the entire day on Wednesday, January 15, and will see passengers visit famous haunts of Cook, such as Hippa Island, Motuara Island, Cannibal Cove, Arapaoa Island, Ship Cove (Meretoto), Amerikiwhati Island, Wharehunga Bay, and more. “These are some of the places where Cook visited, and recorded,” he says. “Visiting these places acknowledges their importance to New Zealand history.” Passengers will be offered the opportunity to look at maps, photographs, artifacts, diary readings,

stories, and even see a Brown Bess musket demonstration. “We’re looking for a good boat load of 100 people,” John says. “Some people just come along to switch off and enjoy the environment!” The tour will depart from Beachcomber Wharf, Picton, at 8am, and will return to the same spot at 5pm. Participants are advised to bring lunch, water, snacks, sun protection, and appropriate clothing and footwear. Ticket costs for the trip range from $50 to $75. For more information or to purchase tickets, phone Marlborough Museum on 03 578 1712. Bookings close on Monday, January 13.

Bohally Intermediate School top achieving students for 2019 are; Rico Chen, Jemimah O'Donnell, Grace Jackson, Louis Girling and Grace Straker.

Standout students By Celeste Alexander

There was a rush of excitement for five Bohally Intermediate School students who were named as the school’s top achievers for 2019, as their names were read out during a prize-giving assembly last Friday. Year 7 students, Jemimah O’Donnell and Louis Girling, received the Pattie Cups, also known as the Bohally Challenge Cups. These are awarded to the students, one boy and one girl, who have demonstrated high levels

of achievement across the areas of academic, sporting, arts/cultural and community service. These students are also outstanding role models who portray exemplary character qualities, citizenship and effective leadership across the school. The next three awards, the Honours Board, were presented to Rico Chen, Grace Jackson and Grace Straker. The Honours Board is presented to the Year 8 students who have also demonstrated high levels of achievement.

These awards go through a rigorous selection process which begins with teacher nominations, which then go to all of the staff who have their say, and the finalists then have an interview with the principal before the top students are selected. “We have amazing kids at Bohally,” a spokesperson says. “Many of them could win but we unfortunately have to get down to a final few. “These are great role models and we wish our Year 8’s who are leaving for college the very best.”

Toy Run proves popular Saturday saw motorbike riders from around the region take part in the Ulysses Club Marlborough Toy Run for 2019. For the initiative, members of the club (and other participants) worked alongside Salvation Army to collect toys for children in need within the Marlborough community. Those who participated started the annual ride at the Woodbourne Tavern, Renwick, and finished at Blenheim School. It was the club's 10th annual Toy Run, which has been a constant success over the years. An amazing 124 riders and their motorbikes

joined in on the ride, which was approximately 40 more than last year. Pic tured are Daniel Woodhouse (left) and Peter Welz, who took part in

Forestry Facts Dear Ed Recently it was revealed 67% of forestry in Marlborough is “non compliant”, i.e. not obeying the environmental rules. Googling I found the four largest private landowners in New Zealand are all foreign-owned forestry companies, 70% roughly of the forestry industry is foreign owned. It doesn’t end there. The Labour-led government has actively encouraged further

foreign purchases of land for forestry through a stream-lined ‘special forestry test’. Since the government was formed, the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) has approved more than $2.3 billion of forestry-related land sales - about 31,000 hectares of it previously in New Zealand hands. Of that, about half has been sold via a streamlined ‘special forestry test’ introduced by the

Say goodbye to unsightly, aching, varicose veins

government last October. Pre-election concerns by Labour, Greens and NZ First about land falling into foreign hands were puffery. Meanwhile the clear felling of pine forests sees silt pouring down valleys into rivers and the Marlborough Sounds. Government has committed fibre. Locally what does MDC intend to do? Sam Socrates

Recently I have spent seven weeks in Maxwell Lifecare as I broke my upper right arm and being right handed and unable to care for myself, I had to have help.

Why secrecy? Dear Ed Recent minutes of the Marlborough District Council show the vexed question of ‘closed door’ meetings still remains. I note the ‘public excluded’ tag to a number of matters. Why? The rates collected are public monies and councillors are elected by the public to serve the public

interest. Staff are paid by the public to serve the public. Too often “public excluded” is used for - well one can only imagine. Too often the tag “commercial sensitivity” is used as an alibi. I also note the well paid positions of committee chairs, ranging from $41,000 to $51,000. Don Coyote

Enhancing food and beverage exports Good to see that Government and commerce are getting together to find ways to enhance our food and beverage exports. In 2013 Rod Oram reported that such produce in 2011 had got us $25.4b, for which the overseas consumers had paid between 140b-200b, so creating a higher value within New Zealand can obviously

be extremely profitable. We are just amazingly fortunate to have a Kiwi company like Scott Technology to aid in processing; we have to get our people trained and motivated so as to take advantage of what is surely a golden opportunity to capture wealth on our doorstep. Bill Holvey

Wednesday December 18, 2019 It's that time of year when school is rounding up and students are saying 'hello' to the long-awaited summer holidays. For St Mary's School year eight students, the end of every year also brings an opportunity to participate in the school's legacy project, which involves painting a mural at a spot around the school. This year's mural is currently being painted on an enormous shipping container. The theme of the mural is "In Christ's Light", which also happens to be the school's slogan. St Mary's youth

Stand-up comedy coming to Picton Fancy a laugh after the result of the World Cup? Award-winning Wellington comedians Alexander Sparrow and Katie Boyle return to Picton Little Theatre for a season of stand-up comedy on December 21. The duo tour all over New Zealand with character comedy and have decided to add stand up to the mix. “I did stand up for several years,” says Sparrow, who has been internationally recognised for his Trump impersonation, which saw him travel to Hollywood in 2017 to perform as one of the world’s top 10 Trump impersonators. He has also won several comedy awards and toured nationally with five character comedy shows. “But I haven’t toured with a stand-up show since 2014. It’s great to be back performing as me again – and to try to get away with more provocative material than I used

to do.” Opening the show is Pat Goldsack (Boyle) who is an 87-year-old woman that runs a swingers club and brothel. The titular character of Pat Goldsack’s Swingers Club & Brothel won Best Comedy at the 2018 Palmy Fringe Festival, and was nominated for seven more awards across three different cities. “I do love Picton,” says Pat, “I met one of my husbands here. The naughtiest one, no doubt.” The show has something for everyone, though does contain adult material. “Sometimes you want to leave the kids at home and get a little naughty.” Stand Up Comedy: Pat Goldsack & Alexander Sparrow is on 21st December at Picton Little Theatre, with a start time of 8PM. Tickets $20 at TakeNote and Alyssums Gifts, Home & Kitchen.

Five generations of farming Caythorpe Family Estate is more than just a passion for Simon Bishell and his brother Scott. Simon talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about expectations growing up, diversifying and being motivated by the future and not the past of the 139-year-old family business which has spanned five generations of his family. Family is never too far away on Caythorpe Estate which is affectionately known as ‘The Farm’. Simon runs Caythorpe Family Estate with his brother Scott - they are the fifth generation of Bishell’s to run the property. The lead-up to Christmas can be frantic. “This is our busiest time, so when others are skiving off and have a few days holiday, unfortunately, we don’t have that luxury. “Fortunately winter is a bit quieter and we usually take our Christmas holidays then.” Simon and Scott run the 190 hectare estate which produces wine, cherries and hay and also has a livestock component as well. What is rare about their partnership is it is the first time in the 139-year history of the operation that two members of the Bishell family have run it at the same time. “Working with family always provides challenges but for us it also provides a lot of opportunity and reliability and you know there’s no one else you can depend on like family when it comes to getting things done in the business. “I look after the vineyard and the orchard. “When I was growing up, the animals and the cropping didn’t interest me a whole lot but I was drawn to the horticultural side of it. “Even when I was a kid I enjoyed working in the cherry orchard and that merged into the vineyards. “My brother’s passion is still the animals and the cropping, that traditionally farming thing so we are lucky that we work together but still have those separate levels of interest within the business.” While both brothers grew up on the farm, they were both borders at Nelson College during their teenage years and then went to university in Canterbury. “Once university finished we both ended up back on the farm after some travel in between,” Simon says. Simon admits while he enjoyed growing up on the farm he did not initially view it as his long-term career. “I took an interest in it but no, I didn’t think it was going to be my career. “When I finished school I wasn’t 100 percent sure of what I wanted to do with my career so I took a year out and just worked on the farm here because I didn’t want to make my next move without knowing exactly what I wanted to do. “Vines really interested me so that was

my go-to and I could see viticulture was a way I could apply good science in a farming operation. So I enrolled concurrently at the University of Canterbury to do a Bachelor of Science, and Lincoln University to do a Bachelor of Viticulture & Oenology. “I pretty much made my mind up two days before I was going to Christchurch about where I was going to go and I ended up down the viticulture road. “I’m not sure what tipped me that way but I’m very glad now, looking back, that I did.” Simon says there was never any pressure from his parents for either he or Scott to join the family business as adults. “As long as I was happy doing something, they were happy to support me in whatever that would have been. “Equally, I think they were quietly excited when I did decide to study viticulture and come back to the farm to continue the family tradition. He is not motivated by the estate’s past but motivated by the future of the business instead. “It’s more about building on the legacy and giving the next generation just as much, if not more opportunity than we were given but we also want to acknowledge the hard work and sacrifices of the previous generations at the same time,” he says.

“Even when I was a kid I enjoyed working in the cherry orchard.” Simon says learning to get as much out of the things you can control while not sweating things like the weather was important day-to-day. “It can be very tough and incredibly frustrating but it doesn’t matter what you are farming, you’re always going to be dealing with the elements but it is also one of the attractions. “It’s the thought of the unknown because you don’t know what Mother Nature will throw at you from one season to the next. “It can be frustrating, enjoyable, challenging, rewarding and heartbreaking all in one. “Last year we had a strong grape harvest but on the other side the cherries were very poor - we had a great crop but two weeks before we started picking,

it rained and rained and rained and ripe cherries hate rain, they crack, split and rot. “But the day I finished picking cherries we had no rain for more than three months and that provided excellent conditions for grapes.” Simon says he felt like he was fully immersed in the business of the farm in the late 2000s. “I’d run the orchard from early stage when I came back for university holidays but it wasn’t until I had a few years experience of running the vineyard that Dad (Murray) was comfortable with it and he could trust that I knew what I was doing. “That was in the late 2000s that he fully handed over the reins to me to step up. “Without being disrespectful Dad was never the most enthusiastic grape grower simply because he grew up in the traditional farming sense, he loved the cropping, tractors, big machinery and the animals. “But as times changed and we had to change the land usage to pay the bills and stay on the property, he became very proficient but it wasn’t his love or passion and he was probably happy to hand it over to me.” Ensuring the operation utilises technology advances is a key part of the business. “Farming industries have traditionally been very manual-based and labour intensive, but we want to use the technology to work smarter, not harder especially in a place like Marlborough where the wine industry requires a large labour base off a small population” “The last five years, we’ve made a big push for technology here at Caythorpe.” He says the lead-up to Christmas is always busy. “At the moment the alarm clock is going off at 5am, I have cherry pickers starting at 6am where I’ll have anywhere from 10 to 20 pickers, then I have three supervisor staff who work between the orchard and packhouse and processing online and corporate orders. “We pick cherries until 1pm, then 10 staff work on the fruit we’ve picked that morning in the packhouse, processing, grading and packing in boxes for dispatch. That takes us through to 5pm and then with some tidying up, the key staff finish around 6pm. Then I’ll head back out to the orchard to assess what fruit I have, where it is ripe and I’m working out what rows need to be picked the next day and working out a plan in my head.

“It’s a long day and you’re bloody knackered after that. “We also have 140 hectares of vines that are going through the flowering stage at the moment, so it is busy.” Simon says he has several motivations when he gets out of bed each day. “Caythorpe has generally been a single family business so now the farm has to support three families with myself and wife Sara, Scott and wife Rachel, Dad (Murray) and our extended families so we have to make it more productive, and if we want that legacy to continue it will need to support more people. “That’s why diversifying is so important especially with a wine brand. “When the sixth generation are making career decisions, if we have a successful wine brand then that opens up more career opportunities. “One day maybe I’d like to have a restaurant and cellar door on the property and enter the wine tourism side of things as well. “I’ve always considered it ‘The Farm’ because everything we are doing comes off the land. “It doesn’t matter if we are growing cherries, wine or animals, it all happens on the farm. “The farm was always the big picture.” Simon likes to stay fit and active and likes to play an instrument or two in his spare time. “Fit body, fit mind helps a lot.

“We have a piano in our lounge and I find it quite soothing, I kind of go through phases where it won’t get played for a while and I forget my repertoire.” He says whatever the next generation choose to do with their lives is their decision. “I would dearly love for our children to take an interest in it but if they choose another career that’s fine too and we’ll plan accordingly when that time comes. “If you try to force it there’s every chance it will backfire so it has to be natural and wanted. “My brother and I feel extremely privileged to be in the position we are in but it’s all down to the sacrifices that Murray and our late Mum (Diana) made. “They got to the early and mid-80s and a combination of family circumstances and financial climate at the time meant they had a lot of debt to pay and they were left with two options. Sell the farm and pay the debt off and ride off into the sunset or diversify and think outside the square. So in 1985 they planted cherries which can be a real boom or bust crop and then in 1987 they planted vines and the rest is history. “My Dad didn’t want to sacrifice all the heritage. “My Great Grandfather wrote a poem once about how if you look after Caythorpe, Caythorpe will look after you and so far that has been accurate.”

A big thank you to all our clients and tradies. Have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

Thank you to all who have supported CARE Marlborough this year. Have a happy and peaceful Christmas.

Christmas message from the Mayor It’s been an eventful year. Now, as 2019 draws to a close, we’ve had a few meetings of your new Council and I’m feeling very confident that we have a team who will work constructively – with a good mix of knowledge, experience and fresh ideas coming to the table. This year we’ve celebrated more milestones in the long earthquake recovery phase including the economyboosting re-launch of the Coastal Pacific railway link and the opening of Seddon’s restored community hall. This year too Seddon finally got to turn on the taps of its improved water supply – a much anticipated moment. Repairs and strengthening for the Ward Hall have been approved and, in Blenheim, we opened the long-planned Youth Hub MYSPACE. An undoubted highlight for 2019 was the Tuia 250 ki Tōtaranui commemoration which brought a great crowd to Picton and an opportunity to learn about our dual heritage. Tuia 250 is also strongly about weaving our cultures together, today and in our shared future. Front of mind this year has been environmental restoration and enhancement, and it was a considerable win to receive government support for the Te Hoiere/ Pelorus Catchment under the alliance of Kotahitanga mō te Taiao. Council is also contributing almost $1m for LiDAR mapping in Te Hoiere/Pelorus This year I want to pay particular thanks to all those working in our emergency services. In a year which has seen us reeling from the impact of forest fire, the Christchurch Mosque attack and the Whakaari / White Island eruption, it’s comforting that there are brave people willing to risk their lives for us. My wish is that you all stay safe over this summer holiday. As a region we continued to grow in population so there are plenty of newcomers in our community. This holiday season is just the time to extend a hand and make our new residents welcome. It’s also the season to extend goodwill and friendship to all. Anne and I look forward to spending our Christmas with family and friends and we hope you all enjoy a happy, peaceful festive season.

Festive cheer at Christmas concert Story and Photos by Aimee O’Hagan

Blue skies, warm temperatures, and sunny weather made for perfect conditions on Sunday afternoon. For attendees of Marlborough’s annual Christmas in the Park event, which was held at Pollard Park’s Churchill Glade this was very positive news. The popular event saw a huge crowd of people come along, with thousands of Marlburians gathering together to celebrate the festive season. Multiple community and performance groups – including the Marlborough District Brass Band, the Hummingbirds,

Acoustic Boomtown, new Renwick School satelite classroom at Omaka Marae, Te Pa Wananga, and more – took to the stage to present Christmas-themed items at the concert. Those who came along to the event had no fear of going hungry, with refreshments being offered at various food carts around the site. Organisers of Marlborough Christmas in the Park 2019 included Blenheim Combined Ministers Association, MoreFM Marlborough, Your Day Wedding and Events, PAK’nSave, Renwick School students performed as part of Te Marlborough Lines, Marlbor- Members of the Marlborough District Brass Band performing. The GPF has help fund a number of projects in Marlborough, including rural recycling containers in Seddon, Okiwi Bay, Awatere Valley and Oyster Bay, as well as the new recycling hub at Havelock Marina.

Cullet must be sorted into clear, green and brown before it can be used to make new glass bottles. Alec explains the centre needed to be upgraded due to changes in the transport system which takes the glass from Marlborough to Auckland. Previously the bunkers would become over full during peak periods, such as summer holidays. However, by increasing the bunker size by 80%, this should no longer be an issue, he says. The Blenheim Resource Recovery Centre has nearly doubled its glass recycling capabilities, thanks in part to a $15,000 grant from the Glass Packaging Forum. The Marlborough District Council funded the remaining $50,000 to construct a concrete storage bunker and concrete pad for storing recycled glass - just in time for the peak festive season. Council Solid Waste manager, Alec McNeil, says the ability to store recycled glass in its three different colours (clear, green, brown) makes it more valuable as a recyclable material. “The additional storage capacity for glass will ensure that the quality of cullet (recycled glass) being returned to O-I New Zealand (in Auck-

Marching Championships a ‘great success’ By Aimee O’Hagan

Last weekend was a significant one for members of the Marlborough Marching Association, who – for the first time in many years – were the hosts of the South Island Marching Championships. The competition saw 26 teams across four grades (Under 12s, Under 16s, Seniors, and Masters) from around the South Island take part, and was made up of three different phases. “Most teams march[ed] a Review and Inspection known as R&I, then a Technical Drill, then a Display,” says MMA secretary, Jaklyn Nicholl. Despite some of the phases being optional, most teams took part in all three. The marchers’ routines were choreographed to all kinds of music, from tra-

ditional tunes to modern pop songs such as Gwen Stefani’s ‘Hollaback Girl’. According to Ja k lyn, participants were judged on their timing, spacing, correctness, the excellence and the brilliance of the ‘picture’ being presented in their display routine, the versatility of the team, and other important marching components. “The weekend was a great success as we had beautiful days and a great crowd,” Jaklyn says. “Our two Marlborough teams did well. “Ashton, our Senior team, came third in Senior Display. “Our U12 Renwick Cordeaux did not place but have improved. “I look forward to seeing our teams compete at Nationals in Auckland this Members of Renwick Cordeaux Under 12s team, Lucy Stephens (left), Issy coming March.” Milan, and Shanae Ireland.
