It still brings a smile to the face of Marlborough Woodworkers Guild member, Vince Smith, when he talks about a recent and very special project undertaken by the volunteer group to help grant the wish of a local family. The Brooks family applied to the Make A Wish Foundation last year on behalf of their 15-year-old son, Zachiah, who has a rare genetic condition, for a specially designed swing bed to be installed outside of their home. Zachiah has a rare syndrome called Cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome that affects less than 10 people in New Zealand. Because Zachiah enjoys being on a swing, his family wanted something which was safe, sheltered from the sunlight and had enough space for him and a caregiver. The Foundation approached the Marlborough Woodworkers Guild to come up with a design. Guild vice president, Bruce Vallance, designed the outdoor structure. The swing bed was made to queen size bed measurements and the base was made large enough to allow people to walk around the edges. The project was supervised by Guild member, Graham Wadsworth, and worked on by around 15 members, all at various times. “When we were approached by the Make A Wish Founda-

tion several months ago, the committee decided to go ahead with the project and since then, it’s been something we’ve all enjoyed,” Vince says. “We were supplied a photo from the internet which was used as a guide. The project was worked on for around seven weeks, all the while we kept in contact with the Brooks family and visited the site it would be installed. “We built the structure and swing bed offsite at the clubrooms, located at Brayshaw Park, before dismantling it to transport to the family’s home,” he says. Blenheim businesses MICO Blenheim and Archgola Outdoor Shelters also helped with various aspects of the project including with a Make A Wish fundraising event. Once completed and in place, Vince says it was a heart-warming moment seeing the family’s reaction. “The family was over the moon… thrilled to bits,” he says. “It was one of the biggest projects we’ve undertaken and we thoroughly enjoyed working on it. Many of our members helped and it was great dealing with MICO. Nothing was a bother to them.” Archgola Outdoor Shelters organised the roof covering which provides Zachiah with protection from the sunlight and the official handover date was December 7.

Welcome in the New Year at Picton with family friendly entertainment and fireworks at midnight.

Welcome 2020 with a bang Picton to host New Year’s event, you’re all invited By Celeste Alexander

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, fireworks will light up the sky and people will cheer and embrace as they welcome in a brand new year. Every year Marlborough puts on a spectacular display for the public to enjoy and this year once again, it will be held at Picton in what’s been dubbed ‘Marlborough’s biggest New Year’s Eve Party’. The Marlborough 4 Fun team has announced its entertainment lineup and it’s looking pretty exciting, with local and out of town acts taking to the stage. The event will be held on the Picton Foreshore and kicks off at 7pm. The public is encouraged to make themselves comfortable and settle in for a “great night”, Marlborough 4 Fun manager, Taylor von der Decken says. “Grab some chairs and bring your picnic blanket because this

year the New Year’s Eve event in Picton will be on the grassy foreshore area. “We hope this minor shift in location (previously held in the London Quay area) will encourage more members of our community to come out and celebrate the New Year holiday together with friends and family,” she says. The focus of the event is to be ‘family friendly’ with music and entertainment for all ages. “We will have live music on stage with great entertainment effects thanks to the Marlborough Light and Sound team,” Taylor says. “Pack a picnic or check out the many food trucks and food vendors that will be set up on the night. “For everyone’s safety this is a zero tolerance alcohol free and smokefree event, which will be strictly enforced by security and police,” she says.

On stage will be three bands entertaining the crowd throughout the evening including Marlborough’s own ‘DoubleShot’. “This awesome duo is one of our many local, talented bands and we are thrilled to have them first on stage to kick off the night,” Taylor says. Fol low i ng t hem w i l l b e ‘A.F.T.E.R’, a brand new musical project from NZ’s Battle of the Bands manager, Andrew Featherstone. Later in the evening will be the ‘Cover Story Band’, an energetic and fully interactive covers band with songs from Kings of Leon, Guns’N Roses, Pat Benetar and Creedence Clearwater Revival, through to The Beatles and the Killers. Adding some humour to the entertainment will be MC, Max George. “We look forward to seeing this funny man on stage in between

sets,” Taylor says. Finishing off the night is the main event, and what everyone will be waiting for – the fireworks! Getting to Picton has been made easy with free bus transport, however people must book as soon as possible to avoid missing a seat. Free bus transportation will be available from Blenheim and Picton (and return). The timetable is as follows. BUS DEPARTURE TIMES ( D epa r t f rom SEY MOU R SQUARE, Blenheim) • 6.30pm ex Blenheim to Picton • 7.00pm ex Blenheim to Picton • 7.30pm ex Blenheim to Picton • 8:30pm ex Blenheim to Picton RETURN TIMES (Depart from Picton iSite) • 10:00pm ex Picton to Blenheim • 12.30am ex Picton to Blenheim (multiple buses) Bookings are essential so visit https://marlborough4fun.co.nz/ for the link

Robbie’s canine companion secured By Aimee O’Hagan Type one diabetic Robbie Parkes, with his family's chocolate labrador, Olive. The four year-old is well on his way to being united with a diabetic alert pup, who will help monitor his insulin levels when mum, Diane, can't.

It’s been a tough last seven months for Linkwater-based family, the Parkes, who witnessed four year-old Robbie be diagnosed with type one diabetes in May. They’ve been fundraising non-stop since August, with money going towards the purchase of a new diabetic alert dog. Costing a huge $20,000, Robbie’s new pet will be trained specifically to meet the young diabetic’s needs, and will help keep an extra eye on both him and his insulin levels when mum, Diane, wants to get a good night’s sleep. The pup cannot be purchased from New Zealand. Diane wants to say a big

thank you to multiple businesses and helpful supporters – especially Erica from All About You Lingerie – from around Marlborough who have contributed towards the cause. Their help and generosity has enabled the family to raise the funds required in record time. “The thought [that we have raised] $20,000 for the dog in just over three months is just amazing,” Diane says. “My aim was to have it paid for by November, which we just managed. “The support from Marlborough has been amazing. “We have had strangers ring wanting to donate something because they had seen the articles or seen it advertised in certain shops.

“We will be forever grateful for people’s support and love, and the ones who have bothered to check up on us to see how Robbie is doing.” She says that the focus is now being put on getting Robbie (and herself) to Australia in order to train with his new furry friend. All money raised from this point onwards will go towards their trip across the ditch (the date of which is undetermined), meeting the pup, and the last leg of training. “We are hoping to have a quiz night and auction in January or February, which will be held at the Woodbourne Tavern,” Diane adds. “Robbie is so excited and can’t wait to go and meet his pup.”

Bride of the Year – it’s an event which has been well known in Marlborough for many years and has helped to raise thousands of dollars for local charitable organisations. Every year it’s put together by a volunteer committee made up of members of the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Club who co-ordinate the show, run silent auctions and raffles to raise money. They first began holding this show in 2003, however the event’s origins go back even further.

fIRe seAsOn stAtUs

MARLBOROUGH / KAIKOURA

From Diabetes Marlborough, Child Cancer and Riding for the Disabled, through to the St John ambulance service; these are just an example of who has benefited from proceeds raised from the show. Since 2003 the show has donated in excess of $100,000 to local charities. This year’s show was held at the ASB Theatre and took on a different format to what it used to be. There was a strong ‘theatre show’ element to the evening which saw a cocktail hour held first with trade tables displayed in the foyer area, then during the show there were dancers, performances, World of Wearable Arts

designs and an on stage chapel scene of guests watching a couple getting married. It was another success with 24 brides taking part and 201 tickets sold. While the 2019 show finished on a high, the committee has decided that it will be taking a break for a year and no show will be held in 2020. With this in mind show convenor, Noeline Stewart, who has headed the committee for the past five years, has also decided to take a break and is stepping down from her role. “I’ve always enjoyed helping with the Bride of the Year show

since it first began in 2003, and my role as convenor for the past five years has been challenging and exciting, and it’s been a pleasure to share that experience with all of the beautiful brides who have taken part. “I have two new twin grandsons who I’d like to spend more time with so I’m stepping down to focus on family. “The committee has been absolutely amazing and put in a huge amount of work over the years, and the support of the community and local businesses has helped to make it a success. “I thank each and every person who has helped us,” she says. Every term, the Clubs of Marlborough donate $500 - which is raised via their weekly Wednesday night quiz - to a local school. The winning quiz team for the term gets to pick the school and this term's school, Havelock School, was picked by winning team the Microbes. Havelock School principal, Ian Quilter, says the $500 donation will be spent on upgrading the school's swimming equipment. Pictured is Clubs of Marlborough bar manager, Gareth Assink right, handing the cheque of $500 over to Ian. Photo supplied.

The Sun Thieves and car satnavs Just a thought: If you enter your home address in your car’s satnav and a thief steals your car, they’ve not only got your car and know where you live, they also know that you’re not there. The advice is obvious but I’ll give it anyway. DO NOT enter your home address into your car’s satnav.

Abysmal ACC the place that looks after overseas people. Because we care! Doesn’t do the same for New Zealanders, who they treat with arrogance. We pay for their protection, but get treated abysmally. Thanks to the DHBs for picking up these cases ACC failed. All excess monies from ACC should go to the DHBs.

A shame What a shame that Xmas in the park has become so diluted that there were only 3 songs on the carols sheet and out of those only 2 were sung. A few years ago there were at least 6 or 8 Christmas carols.

Not a good look Red suzuki swift! We all know that vehicle and who they work for. Not a good look. Who hasn’t thought about ringing up this company?

We need both To, you must be joking: There are many of us who came from cities AND traffic lights. We need both. There are definite holdups with roundabouts too when traffic is too heavy. My son drives a bus, you need to hear him. He is kept waiting as he cannot get through roundabouts at certain times, having to give way to his right.

Happy release day for rescued penguin A rescued Little Blue Penguin has been successfully rehabilitated and released on to Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary in Picton Harbour on Monday. The Little Blue Penguin was found wandering about in a container yard, in broad daylight, obviously lost. It was admitted to EcoWorld Aquarium’s wildlife rehabilitation centre where it was rehabbed to full health. “We are lucky as this was a quick rehab of only three weeks” says EcoWorld’s director, John Reuhman. “The team has cared for the Little Blue really well and by ensuring the bird maintained its wild nature it should have adapted well for its return into the wild. “It’s been a busy spring with four Little Blue Penguins successfully

rehabbed and released. However, although we tried hard, another three penguins brought into rehab were too ill and died in our care.” EcoWorld Aquarium works with local vet Christine MacKenzie. Once rescued, Little Blue Penguins, having been returned to full health are released into the wild on Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary John says it’s Penguin breeding season and more injured and sick Little Penguins are expected to arrive at EcoWorld Aquarium. If you find a sick or injured Little Blue Penguin please contact EcoWorld, your local DOC office or the SPCA for advice. “And please take care, Little Blue Penguins are wild animals and they do peck,” he says.

EcoWorld Director John Reuhman prepares the Little Blue Penguin for its release on Kaipupu on Monday.

Removal of Foxes Island recycling service The rural community recycling container at Foxes Island in Renwick will be removed tomorrow, Thursday 19 December 2019 at 5.00 pm, following a spate of persistent illegal rubbish dumping. Council’s Solid Waste Manager, Alec McNeil says although the actual volumes of rubbish are not large, they are creating a significant litter problem which is adversely impacting on the surrounding environment. “It is a shame that the actions of a minority are spoiling it for everyone else, but the current level of illegal dumping and littering is unacceptable,” Alec said. “As a result of this, Council is removing the service and redirecting the community to the Resource Recovery Centre in Blenheim,” he said. Signage will be erected to advise people of the change in recycling locations.

Stars in Your Eyes confirmed for 2020 By Celeste Alexander

The Sun Newspaper is a proud supporter and sponsor of local events in the region, and for 2019 in particular it was of the Stars in Your Eyes event which took place on August 17 at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim. The show was a joint fundraising initiative for two local charities; Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation Marlborough, and was a sell-out success. The evening began with a pre-show cabaret which was

enjoyed by all, followed by the show which featured nine contestants who transformed themselves into well-known music artists. Celebrity entertainer, Tina Cross, was a judge alongside Mayor John Leggett and local theatre director Bridget McNamara, as well as the host and performer during the evening. First place winner was Lieke Tegels who took the stage by storm with her rendition of ‘Bad Romance’. In second place was Chris Valli with his colourful and

memorable impersonation of Boy George and in third, Iona Panoho with her powerhouse vocal performance as Aretha Franklin. With ticket sales and silent auctions held, the Stars in Your Eyes show raised an incredible $35,000 for the Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation, and $1750 in prize money was presented to the top three winners which they donated to their nominated charities. Being the huge success it was, the decision to hold another show in 2020 was easy for

organisers Robyn Simmons and Liz McKay. “Yes! We are all booked for another Stars in Your Eyes show which will be held in August 2020,” Robyn says. “We want to keep the momentum going by holding this show two years in a row, then after that we will look at if we alternate it to be biannually so we have enough contestants. “But it’s a definite for 2020 and auditions will be held early 2020, so if you are interested start thinking about who you could perform as,” she says.

Kiwi Can Leaders, Gemma Miller and Filimoe’ulie Moala Fotu, and artist Gynelle Blake together with Mayfield School Year 6s with a beautiful mural they created. The mural was gifted to the school by the Year 6 leavers in a ceremony held at the school on December 13. Photo provided.

Coastguard’s Old4New is back to keep boaties safe Following five successful years, Coastguard’s Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade will once again be motivating kiwis to check and upgrade their most important piece of boating safety equipment. Up to 2 February boaties will have the opportunity to bring their old, damaged or ill-fitting lifejackets to one of the 63 Old4New van locations and upgrade them for brand new, heavily discounted Hutchwilco models. This year, the Old4New van, kindly provided by the Giltrap Group, will reach new locations including

Lake Waikaremoana, Kinloch and Turangi, as well as returning to boating hot spots and community hubs in the far north. Since its introduction, Old4New has greatly assisted Coastguard in its mission of ‘Saving Lives at Sea.’ Over 13,500 old lifejackets have been upgraded through the initiative, meaning thousands of Kiwis are now safer on the water. This is a number, Old4New Community Ambassador, Sue Tucker, is keen to increase over the 2019-2020 summer season. “We continue to see lifejackets in

all shapes and sizes, some even 50 years old, and what a lot of them have in common is that in an emergency they won’t keep you safe. We need to be out in the community reminding Kiwis that lifejackets don’t last a lifetime,” says Sue. Over time, exposure to the elements and general wear and tear, heavily effect a lifejackets ability to keep you afloat. Even if an old lifejacket looks good to the eye, there is a chance that its effectiveness has reduced with time. “Lifejackets, including inflatable versions, need to be checked each

year to make sure they are in a good condition. If you know your lifejacket is no good, or if you just want some peace of mind, bring it to the Old4New van to get it checked.” “The motivator behind what we do, is simple. We want to ensure Kiwi’s return home to their loved ones after a day out on the water,” says Sue. “That starts by taking and wearing a fit-for-purpose lifejacket, every time.” If you can’t make it to one of the Old4New van locations, retailer Boating and Outdoors, will once again be offering the Old4New

Lifejacket Upgrade instore at select locations around the country. The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade would not be possible without the generous support from key sponsors, Maritime New Zealand, Hutchwilco, Giltrap Volkswagen and Boating and Outdoors. For more information and a full location schedule visit www.old4new.nz or contact Coastguard on 0800 BOATIE (262 843). The Old4New van will be in the Blenheim on Tuesday 7 January at Marine and Outdoors, 14 Horton Street, Blenheim.

WOMEN OF THE MONTH

The Sun

Women in

Welcome to The Blenheim Sun’s - Women in Business Feature where we shine the light on local women in business

Anna Bensemann (Anna the Planner)

Chris Steadman,

Hypnotherapist, wishes you a wonderful 2020

Resource Management Planner/ Town Planner

What does your role entail?

What does your role entail? I help people navigate the confusing world or resource consents. I prepare resource consent applications and file them with district and regional councils for activities like subdivision, boundary Ph 0279 460445 adjustment, earthworks, septic tanks, second dwellings, water permits, business setup, coastal jetties, sea walls and rock protection works, and any other activities that generate the need for a resource consent.

What has been your biggest achievement? Starting Baseline Group Marlborough with the backing of Baseline Group (Christchurch) two and a half years ago and continuing to grow in Marlborough.

What do you love about what you do? I really enjoy seeing other people being successful and knowing I have helped make it happen, particularly when I can drive past a development and see the results of that hard work.

How do you define success? Waking up each morning passionate about my work and excited to go to work.

What do you do in your downtime? Spending time with my young daughter and going for walks in our beautiful pristine native bush.

What is your unique selling point that sets you apart from the rest? We are a small family owned and operated business with the support of a larger similar business based in Christchurch. We can offer small business, local, personal service, but using big business expertise and skills, creating a unique experience for our clients.

Ph 021 671 195

Make 2020 YOUR year of change. I can help you to take control, whether it be weight loss (though Virtual Gastric Banding), quitting smoking, overcoming stress and anxiety, helping resolve relationship problems, phobias and fears, and so many other problems which could be getting in your way.

What has been your biggest achievement? Quite honestly, it is difficult to say. I have helped people lose twenty and often more kilos, I have saved relationships by using simple relaxation techniques, and I have helped people give up drinking, smoking, and getting rid of chronic pain. For me, as a therapist, these are everyday achievements but for my clients, they can be quite life-altering.

What do you love about what you do? I love watching people come into my clinic, anxious and desperate for a solution. I then watch them float out again with a smile on their face. This must be the best job in the world!

How do you define success? By both immediate and long term results. When someone tells me that they haven’t had a cigarette for two years after seeing me, or are easily maintaining their weight loss, I get such a warm feeling that together we have achieved something wonderful, something that they thought would be so difficult, but has turned out to be so easy.

What do you do in your downtime? Because this is my hobby as well, I spend a lot of time researching new ideas and ways of doing things. Other than that, I walk the dogs, or potter in the garden.

What is your unique selling point that sets you apart from the rest? Two things, I guess. One is my voice which people seem to find ultra-relaxing. The other is my magic box, which sends a very gentle, utterly painless current through the head. This deepens relaxation so that the mind becomes even more receptive to new ideas, or habits or ways of doing things. www.ntrance.co.nz Ntrance Hypnotherapy

Working on my own means my role entails everything from the cleaning to the accounts and every aspect in between. My main focus is customer satisfaction and I spend my day designing, perfecting, printing and then delivering products, ending the day on a high note knowing my customers are happy with the work I have produced.

What has been your biggest achievement? My biggest achievement is purchasing Prisma Print Ltd and creating a career for myself that I love. The steady growth and job satisfaction are constant reminders of how far I have come and what I have achieved.

What do you love about what you do? Simon

How do you define success? To me, success is waking up every day looking forward to what’s ahead. No amount of money compares to the satisfaction of loving life both at home and at work.

My biggest love is the moment I present somebody with their final product. George’s big swim in three days Blenheim local and Marlborough Boys' College Head Boy for 2020, George Glover, will be swimming the length of the Queen Charlotte Sounds twice on December 30 as part of what he calls, 'The Black Dog Swim'. The swim will go for a massive 10 days, with George swimming approximately 85km. The motivation behind the massive swim? George wants to raise awareness of youth mental health. All funds raised through the swim will be donated to kiwi organisation, I Am Hope NZ. So far, George has made just over $6000, but aims to raise approximately $50,000. To contribute towards the cause, visit George's givealittle page, https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/ black-dog-swim-for-nz-youthmental-health. File photo by Aimee O'Hagan.

Summer photo competition

 What food do you crave most often? A poached egg on potato rosti, topped with avocado and tomato. Mmm... Delicious!

 What was the last photo you took? A screenshot of my boyfriend pulling an ugly face on FaceTime, haha.

 When you have had a bad day, what do you do to feel better? Call a friend or talk to my sisters. Either that, or bask in the sun and read. There’s nothing better than a good book.

 What thing do you really wish you could buy right now? An entirely new set of clothes. My current wardrobe desperately needs an upgrade.

 What was cool when you were young, but isn’t now? Pokemon cards and Mighty Beans. They’re still cool for primary schoolers, but DEFINITELY not for people my age.

The summer break is about fun and family so why not share your holiday memories by entering into the Sun Newspaper’s ‘Summer Snaps’ photo competition! Whether it’s photos of your family enjoying the Marlborough Sounds, sharing a picnic at the

11

park, frolicking on the waterslide at home in the backyard, or doing some arts and crafts, if you think your photo sums up what the holidays are all about, send them into the Sun. The top photo, as judged by the staff, will win a café voucher.

Email your photos to celeste@ blenheimsun.co.nz and include your name, address and contact number. A selection of the photos will feature in our January 8, 2020 issue and the winner contacted. Good luck and happy snapping!

 Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life? My dad. He’s so strong, clever, kind, and comes up with the best puns. A true hero in my opinion.  What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been? Amalfi Coast, Italy. I’ve never seen a place so spectacular and vibrant.

 What is the best or worst purchase you’ve ever made? A cone of mango sorbet in Paris. BEST sorbet I have ever tasted!  Favourite programme currently watching? It was Friends a couple of months ago, but now it’s definitely Glee.  What fashion trend makes you laugh or cringe? I used to see no point in owning a pair of ripped jeans, but then I purchased a pair myself and they actually look quite good. So I guess that makes me laugh because I caved into a trend I used to cringe at. Lol.

sports talk With Jacob Page

Parker needs a boxing ring Joseph Parker may be the most curious man in New Zealand sport at present. The 27-year-old former world boxing champion seems to be doing most of his talking with his mouth and not his fists of late as his career appears to be stalling. Parker has not fought since his June victory over Alex Leapai which was essentially a training bout for Parker. An argument can be made the 26 of 28-win boxer hasn’t had a

meaningful win since his majority decision victory over Hughie Fury in September of 2017. Since that time he has lost to Joshua and fellow Britt Dillian Whyte. Parker was forced out of his scheduled October 27 with Dereck Chisora with a mystery illness. Mystery is the right term for Parker, who does all the promotional, charity and public image things well, just his career has failed to wow the casual boxing public. With underwhelming victories

littering his resume, the casual fan is still wondering what all the hype is about. As a child, I grew up with the power punch of David Tua. He was exciting and while lacking the height and technical skills of Parker, he had a powerful punch that made him thrilling to watch and feared amongst the heavyweight division in the early 2000s. Parker might be more of a purist’s pugilist but his value as an entertainment commodity continues to

dwindle as his inactivity continues. There must be a feeling within his camp that 2020 must be a big year for him. He is below Joshua, Andy Ruiz, who he once beat in unconvincing fashion, Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury in the heavyweight pecking order and there is only so many social media videos and menacing interviews with words of supposed intent that can be said before it all falls a little flat. Parker is not a great talker so he

has to deliver in the ring with gritty bouts. So far, many people remain sceptical on his ability to be anything more than a handy boxer who was in the right place at the right time to win his world title. The man himself seems like a true gentleman who does right by his fans and community from a public relations standpoint at least from all visible signs but something just does not seem to be adding up.

Jack Adams has fun as he warms up for the academy’s final game of the season.

Football fun with RNZAF Photographs and story by Aimee O’Hagan

Throughout 2019, five to seven year-olds from around Marlborough have been taking part in a football academy at the Royal New Zealand Air Force quarters in Woodbourne. The scheme – which is non-competitive and has the simple aim of teaching the participating kids skills such as integrity, courage, committment, and comradeship, while having lots of fun – was

set up by Dave Turner from the Royal New Zealand Air Force, in conjunction with the New Zealand Defense Force. “The players are encouraged to be kind and helpful at home and in school, and to participate [by] doing jobs at home to earn a gold coin, which they bring to training with their story,” Dave says. “Feeding the chooks, making their bed, and vacuuming the house seem to be the most popular. “This money helps the academy buy new gear, so we can self-fund

and not rely on sponsorship.” The academy started in term one of the school year, with the players taking a break throughout winter to join winter football clubs. At the beginning of this term, the group’s sessions began again. The academy’s final game was played last Tuesday afternoon. Despite the rain, the children still enthusiastically kicked the ball about and had fun. “The most important aspect of the academy is that it enables all of the social demographic to

participate,” Dave says. “I have been in or working for the air force for 30 years this year and thought it would be a great celebration of what I have [got] out of the game, [and] to give something back to the community free of charge. “We aim to add the seven to nine year-olds age group to the five to seven’s we have now, starting in February 2020. “We are also looking into producing a free ‘tennis’ club and other sports in the near future.”

He korero no te Kaunihera o Wairau NEWS FROM THE MARLBOROUGH DISTRICT COUNCIL

Harbourmaster

Harbours team update Did you know that over 18% of New Zealand’s coastline is contained within the Marlborough Harbours limits? The Sounds support a diverse array of on-water activities from boating to jet skiing and kayaking. Throughout summer the Harbours team patrol vessels are out and about on the water to provide information and advice on maritime safety. Our patrol skippers are friendly, approachable and always happy to have a chat about boat safety. To ensure your safety and the safety of others there are a few updates below to bear in mind when you’re out on the water.

and the 5 knot limit as they approach Picton and Waikawa marinas can be fined $200. Vessels can also be fined for exceeding the speed limit of 3 knots in the marinas. The Harbourmaster will also monitor speed limits on the lower Wairau River from the State Highway 1 Bridge to below the Blenheim Rowing Club. The maximum speed in this section of the river is 5 knots. Jet skis take note. These speed cameras have been calibrated to the same standard as similar cameras used by the Police on our roads and provide clear evidence when a breach has occurred.

Speed cameras

There are now automatic speed cameras at the marinas in Picton, Waikawa and Havelock. The cameras record vessels’ speed as they approach and depart the marina. Vessels exceeding the 8 knot limit as they approach Havelock marina

Navigation lights

During the summer period the Harbours team will run some patrols during dark, paying special attention to boats showing navigation lights. All boats must display navigation lights from sunset to sunrise, and during conditions of restricted visibility, to ensure safety on the water.

Tory channel

The Eastern Tory Channel entrance presents a number of hazards including strong tidal streams, limited sea room and a blind corner. During summer this area may be frequented by more than 20 fast moving ships and ferries in any given day. All boaties using this area are advised to keep a close ear to

VHF Channel 16 or 18 to hear the ferry traffic, and make their own call with more than 10 minutes to spare.

Rafting up

Rafting up in a beautiful bay in the Sounds is a wonderful way to meet friends but please use your holding tanks. This will ensure everyone can swim in clean water.

Harbours gazebo

You may see our Harbourmaster’s gazebo at launching ramps this summer. Our team will be around to provide information about safer boating. There will be some giveaways to win including an annual launching pass. Make sure you come and say hello if you see us.

Ngakuta Bay Ski Lanes What’s New After discussions with the Ngakuta Bay Boating Club and Community Association the Marlborough District Council Harbours Office have reinstated a safer water skiing environment.

How to Use the New Ski Lanes Land Based Markers Five Knot Buoy Ski Lane Buoy Water Ski Access Lane High Risk Area (no more than five knots)

Keep safe on the water this summer – Message from the Harbourmaster With warmer weather upon us there’s a lot more activity in the Marlborough Sounds. The Harbourmaster’s patrol vessels are out on the water this summer to promote safe boating and compliance with navigation bylaws. Whether you’re on a boat, jet ski or kayak it’s important that you prep your gear, check the weather and know the rules. Harbourmaster Luke Grogan said it pays to be prepared because when you’re on the water things can go wrong very quickly. “Just recently we had an example where a spear fisherman fell off his kayak in front of a departing ferry. He was subsequently

separated from his kayak and although he was sighted momentarily by the ferry master he then ‘disappeared’. “Our Harbour Patrol co-ordinated a response via VHF radio and with support from the ferry, local vessels, Port Marlborough and Marlborough Nelson Marine Radio the exhausted fisherman was fortunately found a short time later on Mabel Island. “It’s incidents like this that highlight that even in daylight, calm weather and in the inner harbour, accidents happen. However, this incident really reinforced the power of VHF radio to get help where it’s needed on the water,” Luke said.

December 2018

General Rules for Access Lanes • Access lanes are for take off and landing only. • Keep to the correct side of the lane for your direction of travel. • Enter and leave a lane at right angles to the shore. • Always have an observer in the towing vessel watching the skier at all times. The skipper of the boat cannot fulfil this responsibility.

Designated water ski lanes have been established by the Harbourmaster. These lanes allow high speed access to and from the shore for the purpose of water skiing only. Lanes are marked with orange and black posts on shore and orange and black buoys. Refer to the banner on the right on general rules for access lanes.
