Aging with grace By Aimee O’Hagan

Sitting in her comfortable chair in her room at Ashwood Park Retirement Village, resident Jean Leslie is the picture of health and happiness. She’s only just turned 102 years-old, but still has a joke or two to crack and a smile that lights up the room. Born and bred in Marlborough, Jean has seen many, many changes and events take place over the years, from the horrible effects of the two world wars on kiwi families – including her own – to the rise of the digital age. Continued on page 2. Jean Leslie is 102 years-old and ready as ever to see another decade through.

Another decade begins for 102 year-old Jean Continued from page 1. Jean’s long life began in December 22, 1917, when she was born in small rural town, Tua Marina. Meeting her husband, Arnold, who grew up in Okaramio, led to the two getting married in 1941. They were married a little later than other young couples of the day, with Jean at the age of 26. “We took our chances,” Jean smiles. World War II was challenging for the young couple, with Arnold going overseas to fight for the country. “It was a traumatic time in our lives,” Jean says sadly. “That was nearly three to four years of our life chopped out com-

pletely. “The war stole those years away from our marriage... It was tough.” After Arnold returned, the two moved to Kaikoura to start a family. Since that point in time, Jean has had four children, nine or ten grandchildren, and “too many great-grandchildren to count.” In fact, most were in Marlborough two weeks ago for her birthday celebrations, including two of Jean’s little great-grandchildren from across the ditch in Australia. When asked about what the highlights of her life have been so far, Jean’s answer is a mix of two significant things: her family and her Christian faith.

“Wonderfully, all my children have retired to Marlborough,” she says. “They all pop in and out every now and then. “My son helps keep me up to date with the radio and the television, and my daughters are so lovely and helpful. “[Another highlight is] the church and my faith... The blessed assurance that we’ve got Christ in our life always.” For Jean, the most significant change she has seen take place over her lifetime is how quickly others seem to be moving. “Life was happy and quiet when we were young,” she says. “Nothing that great happened,

except the man in the moon and that sort of thing. “Life’s just drifted on. “Whereas nowadays, people are so busy – rushing through their lives. “Nobody’s got time for anything. Nobody’s got time to stop and smell the daisies. “It’s a pity really.” Although the centenarian says she has no idea what the secret to a long life is, she does have some words of wisdome for younger New Zealanders. “Take your time,” she advises. “Stop and look around you, and see the beauty of this world in which we live – it’s a pretty good world, you know.”

Sharon says goodbye to teaching

By Aimee O’Hagan

When Sharon Holm is asked what she will miss most about teaching, her answer is all the hugs, kisses, and high fives she gets from her new entrant students at the end of a school day. She’s spent the last 29 years teaching at Redwoodtown School, not only working as a teacher but also as both assistant and deputy principal (at different points in time). Retirement is now the reality for Sharon, who says she’s full of mixed emotions: sadness to be saying an emotional farewell to her beloved students and fellow staff members, but also excitement for her newfound “freedom”. Over her years of teaching – which have seen her teach at Whitney Street, Rapaura, and Wairau Valley Schools, among others – Sharon has seen many changes (both in the curriculum and teaching styles) take place, and has made an abundance of beautiful memories. One such memory came about when Sharon went on a camp with a class of year twos. “We were all falling asleep on our camp beds, and then my stretcher snapped in half,” she recalls, laughing. “I gave everyone a fright and woke them up again!” For her, the best part about teaching is having a positive impact on many students’ lives. “It’s the type of profession you have to love,” she says. “And I love making a difference to so many lives, every day. “You don’t realise how much you effect someone when they are a child, but then they come back when they’re older and it’s only then that you know

Mana Cruising Club helps rid rats A Mana Cruising Club crew is sailing across Cook Strait from Wellington to help rid a Marlborough Sounds’ island of rats and keep it rat-free so its native wildlife can thrive. A Department of Conservation (DOC) Community Fund grant of $20,000 is being given to the Mana Cruising Club Friends of Pickersgill Island group for trapping work on Matapara/Pickersgill Island. It will enable the purchase of 55 self-resetting A24 rat traps and supplies for maintaining the traps. The crew from the Porirua-based club will boat to the island in Queen Charlotte Sound twice a year to service the traps.

how much you meant to them. “It really pulls at your heartstrings... It’s taught me so much.” According to Sharon, she was asked by many about why she’s chosen to retire now, instead of waiting until she’s been teaching at Redwoodtown School for

30 years. “I replied, ‘well, I just don’t have the energy anymore.’” she says. Her plans for retirement include spending a lot more time with family, doing more tennis, exploring parts of New Zealand she hasn’t yet seen, and even

travelling around Scotland with a close friend. “The best thing about retirement is that I can do what I want to do, when I want to do it,” Sharon smiles. “[This] year I might even be able to get my Christmas cards out early!”

Police have already begun to locate cannabis crops growing in rural areas now that the growing season has arrived. Police are asking for public who have located any to let them know. Those who are in the illicit business of growing cannabis often look for a remote, scrubby area where they can plant their crop and it’s less likely to be found by others. As an added incentive for you to let Police know when you discover cannabis growing on your land. “Call us, we’ll remove the cannabis and reduce the risk to your property!”

Back country legends, mule trains and murder Local journalist, Tony Orman releases sequel Marlborough journalist and author Tony Orman has just had his 25th book ‘Down a Country Road II’ published. It is a sequel to his bestselling book last year; ‘Down a Country Road’, featuring stories from New Zealand’s rural heartland. Publishers New Holland said last year’s ‘Down a Country Road’ sold out in just six weeks, so a sequel was virtually inevitable. The first chapter features a colourful local Marlborough back country legend “Whacka” Anderson who farmed Mt Patriarch Station up the Wairau Valley. Other Marlborough identities feature Ken White, a New Zealand representative at dog trailing, high country musterer Fred Stacey, Sabine Gibson a backcountry poet and gold miner who lived in the Howard Valley near St Arnaud and Grace Johnson, a remarkable World War Two Marlborough land girl. In addition Marlborough features in tales of mule trains used on Kekerengu’s Bluff station and a chapter on 19th century murders in Marlborough’s upper Wairau Valley near St Arnaud. A strong motivation to penning the chapters was that in an age of rapid urbanisation, rural New Zealand was slipping more and more into the recesses of the nation’s mind, says Tony. “There are urban youngsters who

do not know where the supermarket produce such as meat or vegetables originally came from. It underlines the widening gulf between town and country. “So hopefully this book will remind some urban dwellers there is a rural New Zealand out there and it’s worth knowing about its productivity and experiencing its values and recreation.” Some chapters delve back in history, one example being missionary William Colenso who in the 1840s crossed the Ruahine Ranges to spread the Christian ethic. “Colenso was a missionary but he was undoubtedly imbued with the qualities and insatiable curiosity that go to make an explorer,” says Tony. “Those old explorers were remarkable and indefatigable. They had none of today’s gadgetry even motorcars. Travel was with horse or by foot. No frame packs - just a swag. No sleeping bags, just a woollen blanket. No maps because the territory they entered was unknown and unexplored. No waterproof clothing, probably just an old suit coat - no primus stoves or gas cookers, just a billy and the open fire.” There is a fascinating chapter on moas and research by a Dunedin man that suggested while moas were certainly extinct today, a few remnants

may have clung on for a few hundred years even into the 20th century. “The satisfying thing about a book like this, is I’m not really the author. I’m just the gatherer, the curator or messenger. Everybody in this latest book as in “Down a Country Road”, is really the author because they are the ones who have given me the stories,” explains Tony. “Another satisfying aspect is that many of the tales would have been lost and inevitably forgotten as time goes by. Recording them for posterity has been a pleasure.” The Sun Newspaper has two copies of ‘Down a Country Road II’ to giveaway to readers. To enter the draw to win one of these copies, simply send your name, phone number and answer to the following question to; celeste@blenheimsun. co.nz Question: Who is the ‘colourful local Marlborough back country legend’ who farmed Mt Patriarch Station up the Wairau Valley, that the author refers to?

No bloom but kindy still wins tallest sunflower award

Sam Carter and Connor McKinnon of Witherlea Kindergarten are pictured with their sunflower, which is late to bloom, and won the region's tallest sunflower title in a recent competition. Photo provided.

It’s been a blooming success, without the bloom, for Witherlea Kindergarten which has won a sunflower growing competition. The Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project has run over four months, spanning 11 regions and involving 13,024 children – 251 of which were from Marlborough. As part of the project each child grew their own Kings Seeds ‘Skyscraper’ sunflower which can grow up to a whopping four to five metres tall. Spectacularly huge and towering the Skyscraper produces golden petalled flower heads which can measure up to 45cm across and weigh several kilos, whilst the stems can be thicker than a person’s arm. While the competition has ended, and the plant being late to produce a flower, Witherlea Kindergarten’s sunflower has still measured the tallest in the region, measuring in at 197cm. For kindergartens which did not see their sunflowers bloom in time for the main project due to location and weather, Daltons is running a Late Bloomers Awards. Kindergartens are invited to send in photos and measurements of their blooming best sunflowers anytime from now up to Monday, February 10. Flower or no flower, the children

at Witherlea Kindergarten are ecstatic with their award. Witherlea Kindergarten’s head teacher, Ed Parker, says gardening plays an important part in the kindergarten’s activities. “Gardening has always been a big part of what we do at Witherlea Kindergarten and we are lucky to have the space and enthusiasm to grow a bounty of fruits and vegetables each year. “The Sunflowers in Kindergar-

tens Project is always popular here and we have had some very happy winners announced within our kindy growing contest. “Because of the big winds recently, there has been some sunflower casualties and horizontal growth, but like our tamariki we also encourage resilience in the face of challenges.” Witherlea will receive a prize from Daltons and The Warehouse.

Responsible camping on Council’s radar Extra Council rangers will be out and about over summer in an effort to spread the word about responsible camping in Marlborough. Earlier this year, the Council received Government funding of $183,610 for additional rangers to manage the high-season period, on top of its current staff of two. Rangers will visit camp sites and other spots used by campers to

ensure things are running smoothly, and educate people about their responsibilities. Rangers will also gather information that can be used as part of a feasibility study ahead of Council’s review of the Freedom Camping Bylaw 2012 next year. Council’s Reserves and Amenities manager, Jane Tito, says there has been a big increase in the number of visitors camping at Marlborough’s

responsible camping sites – up from 7,000 in 2016 to 12,000 in 2018. “On top of the funding for additional rangers, Council was also successful in getting funds of $25,000 from central Government’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund for a feasibility study on a long-term, sustainable approach to the management of responsible camping sites in Marlborough,” Ms Tito said.

“This study, which is also funded by Council, will help to inform the bylaw review and will consider the trends and challenges associated with managing responsible camping. It will look at how monitoring is carried out and the impact of responsible camping on other providers. As part of this study Council will review our existing campsites to determine whether we have the right

number and type, and whether they are in the right locations,” she says. The study will also include consultation with iwi, the camping and motorhome associations and other interested groups. Council’s Freedom Camping Bylaw 2012 was last reviewed in 2016 and the new review is scheduled to commence in July 2020, following the results of the study.

If you can provide a caring foster home for kittens and pregnant cats, the SPCA Marlborough team wants to hear from you.

Kitten foster homes With kitten season in full swing, the SPCA Marlborough Centre is looking for more foster homes. Centre manager, Donna Sologar, says it’s nice to give the kittens and pregnant cats a nicer space to live until they can be de-sexed and adopted. “When they come to us really

young, and often wild, this is where foster homes play an important role in preparing kittens for adoption,” she says. The main criteria for foster homes include having a spare room for safety and containment. If there are other pets in the home they must be up to date with their vaccinations and

can be kept away when necessary. Plus, those fostering kittens and pregnant cats need to either own their home or have landlord permission. “We provide everything they need to foster including food, kitty litter and bedding,” Donna says. For more information contact or visit the centre.

DOC’s Summer Explorer programme The Department of Conservation (DOC) and local community groups have teamed up to provide a number of events for youth, adults, and family this summer. For ages five to 12-years a three-day holiday series run by Conservation Kids, Kids Conservation Club, and East Coast Protection will be taking place on the 10th, 17th, and 22nd of January. Planned activities will investigate the wildlife of Marlborough’s East Coast. There is also a field trip planned for February. A gold coin is necessary for entry. On January 9 there will be a free treasure hunt at Momorangi campground, with on-site rangers helping the ‘hunters’ to identify their finds. For family groups, Fish & Game will be hosting a free fishing day on Lake Argyle, January 18. Supported by DOC and Henderson’s Ltd, expert fishermen will be on-site to help out. A sausage sizzle will be available for a gold coin. Those interested in wildlife can go visit Te Pakeka/ Maud Island as it will be open on the 5th, 12th, 25th, and 26th of January. This scientific reserve is home to endangered insects and reptiles. Te Pakaka/Maud

10

Island is also famous for the endangered Maud Island frog that lives on it. Trips will be provided by Pelorus Tours and DOC, and will cost $135 adults/$65 children. More local is the Grovetown Lagoon, where a benched track provides footing for a stroll around this restored wetland. The Grovetown Lagoon Trust has planned a walk to celebrate World Wetland Day on 2nd February. Families (and dogs on leads) are encouraged to attend, and there will be activities for children. For the seasoned outdoorsmen, the Marlborough Tramping Club will be walking to the Emerald Pools along the Pelorus River on 12th January. This two hour return walk is flat but will involve some rock hopping and a swing-bridge. An easier tramp will take place on 22nd of January to Cape Campbell Lighthouse along Marfells Beach. Feeling artistic? Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary is hosting a photography workshop. The workshop will cover photo composition. Participants will then be sent by boat to Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary to photograph the wildlife. The workshop is $30, and includes boat transport.

Catch the lucky fish to win great prizes The highly popular Lake Argyle tag competition is all go, and this year Nelson Marlborough Fish & Game have ramped up the prize pool, with 2 x $500 Henderson's vouchers up for grabs, plus rod and reel combos, lure packs, free licences, and more!

Over 200 tagged fish have been released into the lake and you could be the one to net the lucky fish. It's simple; catch a tagged fish, send in your tag number and if you are a winner you will be contacted. There will also be a family fishing

day at Lake Argyle which is aimed at people that want to give trout fishing a go, or are new to the sport and need a hand to help them catch more fish. Educational permits will be provided as well as a BBQ. All ages welcome.

minutes with

Celeste Alexander

Senior reporter for the Sun Newspaper  What food do you crave most often?

 What was the last photo you took?

I grew up in Australia so BBQ’s were pretty regular. I love bacon wrapped asparagus cooked on the BBQ.

A selfie with my seven-yearold son, Jett, at the Renwick Christmas Tree Festival last weekend.

 When you have had a bad day, what do you do to feel better?

 What thing do you really wish you could buy right now?

Buy myself something ! Doesn’t need to be anything expensive, but a girl’s got to treat herself occasionally.

A house renovation/extension.

 What was cool when you were young but isn’t now? Stirrup pants- the pants with those elastic bits that went under your foot! They were the most hideous things.

 Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life? My Poppy. He raced sidecars until he was 71, he’s worked hard all of his life and always has a funny joke to tell you. He even walked me down the aisle at my wedding!

 What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been? Going from a hot and dry Australian landscape to the beautiful Marlborough Sounds – I’d pick the Sounds any day.

 What is the best or worst purchase you’ve ever made? I begged my parents to let me colour my hair when I was 13. I picked copper blonde and ended up with semi-permanent peach coloured hair. Worst decision ever!

 Favourite programme currently watching? CSI (Crime Scene Investigation). My two children are hooked too! We all like to see who can identify the guilty person first.

 What fashion trend makes you laugh or cringe? Snap pants. They were trendy when I was a teenager but after seeing Kim Kardashian wear them with high heels, I hate them even more!

Tiki Tane a headline act for Mussel Festival The Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival is excited to launch the 2020 event with two headline acts, a first for the Festival now in its 16th Year. The festival will be headlined by NZ Music Icon Tiki Taane, along with New Zealand’s favourite Super-Band The Phoenix Foundation. Supporting both headline acts will be festival favourites Sun City Soul, and Havelock’s Band of Locals. “Tiki Taane is one of the most iconic names in New Zealand music, and is beyond a perfect fit with the Festival, it’s a big win for Marlborough and the Festival,” says organiser, Hans Neilson. To tantalise your taste-buds there will also be Two Raw Sisters joining the Festival for the first time, supported by Chris Fortune and Paulie Hooton in the culinary tent. With a great line-up of live music and entertainment, delicious food, fine beer and wine and seafood, summer in Marlborough wouldn’t be complete without the Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival. This quintessentially Marlburian event has been “Servin’ up a whole ocean of fun” for 16 years, and 2020 promises to be the best one yet, organisers say. The 2020 event will also include all the Festival Favorites like cooking demonstrations, competitions, market stalls, industry displays, the KidsZone

to keep the wee ones busy, and of course another crack at the Guinness World record attempt for mussel opening. Over the years the event has raised over $200,000 for the Marlborough community. “Our biggest point of pride is that we are able to deliver such a high quality event that is affordable, accessible, and true to its legacy as Marlborough’s most family friendly festival.” Hans says.

Trade in your old lifejacket for a new one Just in time for summer, the coastguard’s Old4New Life-jacket Upgrade Campaign is returning to Marlborough. “New Zealanders need to be aware that lifejackets don’t last a life-time,” says Sue Tucker, Old4New community ambassador. “Each year we have people come to the Old4New van with lifejackets that are 30, 40 and even 50 years old.” “Lifejackets, including inflatable versions, need to be checked each year. If you’re in any doubt as to how to check your lifejacket, visit the Old4new van

and we’ll show you exactly what you need to do and look out for.” According to Coastguard CEO, Patrick Holmes, lifejackets save lives, but old lifejackets are no good in an emergency. “Lifejackets that are over 10-yearsold should be replaced even if they look OK. Seawater, sun, and general wear and tear impact how effective they are and many old lifejackets won’t even float, which is a serious concern in an emergency.” If you are unsure about the age and/ or the safety of your lifejacket, this

is an opportunity to get it checked. If your lifejacket is deemed unsafe, with your consent Old4New will take your old lifejacket and dispose of it safely. In return they will sell you a new lifejacket at a heavily discounted price, allowing you to be safe and save $30/$40 while you’re at it. On Tuesday, January 7, the Old4New Van will be parked from 8am - 11am outside Marine & Outdoors, Blenheim. If you can’t make it to the van, that’s okay, because from Tuesday, January 7 - 14 Marine & Outdoors Blenheim will be supporting the scheme.

Stay safe from burglars There are always a few sad stories that emerge over the Christmas period of families that suffer a house burglary or a theft in which their Christmas presents and property are stolen. Most thieves are opportunists. This means that they will often be travelling a regular route when they see something that tempts them to take another look. Then while they are snooping around, they may take advantage of an easy target. To reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft or burglary around Christmas time: • Don’t display your presents and

Get to know your neighbours While the holidays is a time for relaxation and spending time with family and friends it’s also a good to be mindful of our neighbours, particularly in the event of an emergency. As we all know, emergencies can strike at any time and can cause extensive damage to property, roads and businesses, as well as posing danger to ourselves. This is why Marlborough Civil Defence Emergency Management works closely with Neighbourhood Support. They’re all about making our neighbourhoods stronger. So if you don’t already know your neighbours, make it your mission these holidays to introduce yourself and swap contact details. If you know your neighbours, you’re more likely to be supported when times get tough and you will know who may need your help. You don’t need to be best mates, or know everything going on next door. You just need to be able to say ‘kia ora’ or ‘hi’. Easy! If you don’t already have a list of information sources which can assist in the event of an emergency, such as earthquakes, floods and fires – here’s a list to keep.

Your phone (landline or cellphone): Keep calls to a minimum, and send texts instead. Think about letting one person know you’re OK and asking them to share the message. Antenno: Antenno is a free mobile app that sends you notifications and alerts about places you care about in Marlborough. It’s simple and easy to use. It can also be used to immediately tell Council about things that need fixing, or to give feedback. Social Media: The Ministry of Civil Defence Emergency Management and the Marlborough District Council post messages on Facebook and Twitter. Radio: Listen to the radio on your cellphone, at home, a battery-powered radio or in your car. Here are the local frequencies: Radio Live – 95.3FM Blenheim and 92.3FM Picton. The Hits – 96.9FM Blenheim and 89.1FM Picton. More FM – 92.9FM Blenheim and 94.7FM Picton. The Breeze – 89.7FM Blenheim and 98.7FM Picton. Brian FM (live broadcasting from emergency services) – 100.9FM Blenheim, 104.3FM Seddon and Awatere Valley, 105.9FM Picton, Okiwi Bay and French Pass, 100.1FM Havelock.

gifts so that they are visible to the public • Don’t leave presents or purchases in plain view in your vehicle while you’re away from it • Don’t leave your vehicle unlocked while unattended • Avoid letting the public at large view your house contents (ie; while providing a Christmas light display) • Don’t leave your house or garage insecure while away from the property • Don’t advertise the fact that you’re on holiday - have someone clear mail, mow lawns, park a car in the drive occasionally and don’t pull curtains.

We’re all responsible for keeping children safe in our families and communities. Consider the following safety information this holiday season, and beyond. For families, whanau and caregivers: • Listen carefully to your child – take notice of anything unusual. • Always know where your child is, and only leave them with trustworthy people. • Show your child how to get safely to and from school and other common places. Teach them to walk with friends, not alone. • Stay in touch with local parents and know who your child walks home with. • Provide your child with a list of useful contacts and emergency phone numbers. • Discuss with your child how to identify and report unsafe behaviour. • Encourage your child to take action when they feel uncomfortable, unsafe or scared. For children: • Tell someone if you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or scared. • If you feel uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation. • Trust your ‘gut instinct’. • If the first person you ask doesn’t help, keep trying until someone does. • If you see anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to call 111.

sports talk With Jacob Page

The more things change, the more they stay the same 2020 looms as an exciting year of change for sport in New Zealand. It is a safe bet to suggest the Tokyo Olympics will be a phenomenal sporting success. The question for Kiwis will be, after multiple Olympic campaigns of 18 medals in 2016 and 13 in 2010, can the squad maintain those lofty numbers for a country so small. From a Marlborough standpoint and a selfish one on my part, I would love to see rower Robbie Manson win a medal in the single sculls. His form seems to have gone

through a few low-points of late but mentally, I know he is capable of a big performance on the biggest stage. Olympic bronze medalist Eliza McCartney has had health and fitness issues over the past 12 months but she is also talented enough to go further if her body lets her. This will also be the last hurrah for shot put star Valerie Adams, arguably one of our most successful single sport athletes ever. Rugby goes through its traditional year of change as a new four-year World Cup cycle begins.

It is hard to see any New Zealand franchise getting close to the Crusaders though Ethan Blackadder’s injury-forced absence is a big loss for Scott Robertson’s team. There will also be more inexperience in the All Blacks’ ranks for the first time in 10 years. There is a feeling the aura of the men in black may be slowly disappearing and the Springboks are deservedly the team to beat. Questions remain over whether this golden era of the Black Caps can continue.

Kane Williamson will keep scoring runs for fun - technically he is just too good not to do it. The major questions surround how much longer Ross Taylor wants to and can continue to play international cricket and can the team build depth beyond the usual familiar faces, especially in the test match cauldron. The reality is, the Warriors will still be awful but the fans will be the most popular in the NRL. A youthful Wellington Phoenix team seems to be making progress

in the A-League. The same cannot be said for the New Zealand Breakers, who are getting progressively worse in the NBL. From a viewing standpoint, it will also be interesting to see how the battle between Spark Sport and Sky TV broadens over the next year. The public, myself included, have wanted Sky’s strangle-hold on live sport to be loosened. Now that it has happened, I’m not so sure, we, the paying public are better off.

Hopai Sports Day tomorrow

Special wood chopping events will be sure to entertain the crowd.

For years, generations of Marlborough families have flocked to Havelock for its annual Hopai Sports day. This day of sun, swimming, and friendly competition is, to many, part of the very fabric of Marlborough. Incredibly, this next Hopai Sports Day, held tomorrow (January 4), will be the event’s 100th anniversary. Special Centennial events have been planned, such as; a 1900s period-costume competition, a special wood chopping event, and boat races. There will be a 4pm prize giving for the winners of these events. Hats, mugs, honey, calendars and cards commemorating the centenary also will be for sale. Don’t worry, all the usual activities are still on

the menu. The popular Gumboot Throw will be on, as well as raffles and tug-of-war events. Teams will be returning from last year to defend their titles in the Hopai He Man race. Take along a picnic lunch, bring your togs and sunblock, and maybe rummage around Granddad’s attic for some early 20th century clothing. There is no bar facility so BYO, and this year there will be some EFTPOS machines available but this will be of limited capacity so organisers recommend bringing some cash as well. Admission is $5 per head, and 12 and under are free. Access is by road via Kenepuru Road. Landing barge is provided by Johnson’s Barge Service.

There's plenty of fun activities for the kids to enjoy. Photos by Lamirana Photography
