New Year newborn By Aimee O’Hagan

Blenheim couple, Ben and Georgia Rogers, are two parents who are feeling incredibly tired but very happy and content. At 4:58pm, on January 1, Georgia gave birth via a caesarean section to Marlborough’s first baby for 2020 – a baby boy weighing an impressive 10lb 10oz. While they have not yet chosen a name for their extra special newborn, both Georgia and Ben can safely vouch that they are overjoyed to welcome him into the world. Continued on page 2. Georgia Rogers is the mother of the first baby born in Marlborough in 2020.

Ben and Georgia's son, who was born on January 1, 2020, and weighed 10lb 10oz.

Continued from page 1. According to Georgia, the arrival of their baby boy was “perfect timing”. “He was due on December 23, but we were hoping that he would come earlier so we could enjoy Christmas Day. “Luckily it worked out that we could still enjoy Christmas; he was about nine days late. “The birth [itself] happened quite quickly... It was a bit of a blur.” Also excited about the newest member of the Rogers family is Ben and Georgia’s other son, two year-old Makhi. “He loves it,” Ben laughs. “He’s always cuddling and kissing his little brother. “We thought Makhi would be jealous that his younger brother is getting all the attention... but he’s actually embraced it!”

“It’s just about reminding him to be gentle,” Georgia adds. The two describe their newborn boy as a “good, content baby” who doesn’t cause much of a bother. “He doesn’t really scream, he just squawks,” Georgia laughs. The couple would like to say a “huge thank you” to all of the midwives and doctors at Wairau Hospital’s maternity ward, particularly midwife Shona Wills. “They’re like angels,” Georgia says. “They’re so helpful. You just press a button and they’re there!” Both parents look forward to watching their new baby boy, alongside older brother Makhi, grow up and take on what the world has to offer. “They’ll be going on lots of fishing trips with their dad,” Ben smiles.

East Coast protection bylaw process underway Marlborough District Council is beginning the process to consult the public on a bylaw protecting the coastline around Cape Campbell, between the Waima/Ure and Awatere river mouths. The issue was discussed at the Planning, Finance and Community Committee on 28 November and the approach agreed by the full Council on 12 December. The Kaikoura earthquake dramatically uplifted 110 km of Marlborough’s East Coast in November 2016,

raising it by up to 2.5 metres in the area between the Awatere and Waima/ Ure rivers. Councillor Gerald Hope, who is Deputy Chair of the Environment Committee, says the uplift caused the high tide mark to shift by as much as 200 metres, leaving much more beach and shoreline exposed. “Before the earthquake, vehicle access to this area was virtually impossible and restricted by the tides, but after 14 November 2016 it became possible to drive along the coast at

George’s big swim to finish today By Aimee O’Hagan

A young swimmer from Blenheim has succeeded in inspiring many – both locally and nationally – by testing his own mental and physical strength in the name of mental health. Marlborough Boys’ College student and head boy for 2020, George Glover, has spent the last nine days swimming the length of the Queen Charlotte Sound. Not just once, but twice. That’s appromimately 123km, which is just over three times the length of the Cook Strait. It’s all for the Black Dog Swim: a movement started by the teen to raise money for New Zealand charitable trust, I Am Hope – with all funds going towards youth men-

tal health programmes around the country – and to increase awareness of the importance of mental health. With a goal of raising $50,000 over the course of the swim, George is well on his way - having raised over $49,000, he’s only got approximately $500 left to go. He’s been supported by a multitude of Marlborough and Tasman businesses and organisations – such as Pita Pit Blenheim, Vines Village Cafe, Tasman District Police, and others. The route George has taken has consisted of him swimming from Anakiwa to the head of East Bay (the halfway mark of his swim), and then back to where he started. George’s historic journey is set to end today, with the 17 year-old finishing the swim at Anakiwa Wharf.

Holiday drowning toll at six Preliminary figures from Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) indicate the preventable fatal drowning toll for the official holiday period is six. The summer holiday period ran from 4pm Tuesday, December 24 and ran through to 6am Friday, January 3 2020. The average toll during this period for the last five years is eight preventable drowning fatalities. With the summer season ongoing for a few more months, WSNZ is appealing to all people to make wise decisions around water.

Police have named the pedestrian who died after being struck by a car in John Street, Blenheim on December 27. He was Nikolay Andreev, aged 44. Mr Andreev was a Bulgarian national who had been working in the wine industry in Marlborough. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones,” a Police spokesperson says. A 29 -year-old Blenheim man and vineyard worker, Kevin Paisa, appeared in Blenheim District Court on Monday charged with dangerous driving causing death, injury, and refusing to give police officers a blood test.

Steampunk in Marlborough By student reporter Frances Chin

Welcome to the Cancer Society Marlborough

WELCOME TO THE CANCER SOCIETY MARLBOROUGH

This Heritage Day, set for February 6, Marlborough Museum will be running its Steampunk Inspiration Competition for the second year in a row. People are invited to submit a steampunk model, photograph, or an outfit and can enter more than one category (with each having three age brackets, under 12s, 1218s, and older). On the day of the competition, the outfits, models, and photos will be displayed and judged at the museum and the winners of each category will have their work displayed in the museum’s exhibition. In previous competitions, Marlborough Museum had a Victorian theme but with numbers dwindling the decision was made to change things up a little. The costumes were too complex for many to make, and the summer heat was an obstacle, says Steve Austin, the executive director for the Marlborough Heritage Trust. “It was a ridiculous time of year to dress up in suits and thick dresses. Steve chose Steampunk as the new theme. “I’m always looking for creative ways for the past to be bought to life and enjoyed,” he says. “Not as in living in the past, but using the past as a jumping point. The past is a point of reference, not of residence. Steampunk encapsulates this.” Unsure as to what Steampunk is? You’re not the only one. “I didn’t know anything about Steampunk,” Steve says. After researching, he learnt that Steampunk is a subculture aesthetically based upon 19th century industrial machinery. Think of shiny metal and whistles and cogs. Steampunk has a following in Oamaru, where the annual Steampunk Festival takes place. Members of the Steampunk community contacted Steve and gave him encouragement.

“[With Steampunk] people live it, flaunt it, and embrace it,” Steve says. “It gives people a life of freedom, to go use the resources they have around them to create something new and fun.” Steve was worried that Steampunk would be too exotic of a theme for Marlborough residents. However, last year’s heritage day competition “went really well”, and people entered from not only Marlborough, but places such as Christchurch, Motueka, and Wellington. “They looked absolutely amazing,” Steve says. “Young and old were all involved in the competition. “A woman over 60 told me about her steampunk themed birthday party. Steam-

punk inspires for all generations. It really does appeal for all ages.” Steve feels that Steampunk embodies the principals of Heritage Day, as it connects the past and the present. “We’re looking for a connection in what happened in the past and how to display it visually. And how to get people interested and really celebrate the past not as something dead, but something we can reinvent and have fun with,” he says. For entry forms contact the museum on (03) 578 1712, email info@marlboroughmuseum.org.nz or visit the team at Brayshaw Heritage Park, 26 Arthur Baker Place. The cut-off date is 4 pm on January 30.

Popular festival returning to Picton By Aimee O’Hagan

Next Friday January 17 and Saturday 18 are two days that are set to make for an exciting end of the week: the Picton Maritime Festival – which is celebrating it’s 15th birthday this year – is once again being held at the Picton Foreshore. An anticipated occasion that now “holds it’s own place on the summer events calender”, the festival is a free, family-oriented event that celebrates the special maritime heritage of Picton and the Marlborough Sounds. There are plenty of things to look forward to about the festival, including a range of professional and local entertainment (from Wellington-based band Superbad to Queen Charlotte College’s Kapa Haka group), free boat rides around the harbour, lots of delicious food and drink, and even an exciting fireworks display! As well as this, there will be multiple exciting competitions to take part in and the

chance to meet a group of pirates who go by the names of Captain Festus McBoyle and his friends. According to organisers, the aim of the event is to bring the community together, enable children to learn about Marlborough’s maritime heritage in a fun and participatory way, and provide families with the opportunity to spend time together without the burden or barrier of having to pay expensive entry fees. All funds raised by the Picton Maritime Festival Trust will be distributed back into the community to support local initiatives which directly benefit youth and families. The two-day occasion is set to cater for over 6000 people, so make sure to come along and make the most of a fun and free day out! This year’s event will run from 11am to 5pm on Friday January 17 and from 11am to 11pm on Saturday January 18. For more information about the festival, visit http://www.pictonmaritimefestival.co.nz/.

Shanae Deacon Blenheim The Australian fires. It’s pretty sad that some were deliberately lit.

Steve Austin Blenheim I think like a lot of people, we are pretty horrified with Australia’s fires. I think one of the reasons it’s so challenging is we know we also have a major risk of fire in Marlborough.

New Year’s Honours The recent New Year’s Honours list leaves me slightly confused. An All Black coach travels around the world, business class all expenses paid with perks, gets a gong. A doctor or surgeon at the local hospitals working under great stress trying to save or

repair patients; underfunded and (working) long hours. After years of study and at a great personal cost, it would seem they would have gained more recognition if they had chosen to be a rugby coach. Just a thought. Kiwi

Recycling woes As concerned ratepayers who try to do our bit for the environment by recycling our bottles plastic and cardboard, I was horrified when they shut down the recycling bins at foxes Island. When we contacted our council rep she said to use Rapaura. We live close to Renwick, we pay rates we have no rubbish collection in this area. Rapaura has nothing like the population of the Renwick area so understandably we were annoyed that their bin was OK but the one for Renwick and surrounding area was closed due to too much rubbish left outside the bin.

If the bins were emptied more regularly or monitored at certain times when people are dumping, this problem could be overcome. When we arrived down to the Raupara bin to do our bit for the environment by recycling (pictured), it was far worse than I ever saw at Foxes Island. Also it is located just across the road from the school. We don’t have a level playing field. Town residents have rubbish collection and kerbside recycling while Renwick residents have no rubbish collection and now not even a recycling bin. Concerned ratepayer

Out of Town perspective I have lived in Blenheim for two years now and love the place. I love the slow pace of life and the people are mostly friendly. It’s refreshing after living in the big city in NZ and abroad. But I have noticed the traffic habits in Blenheim are appalling. Everyone is in a rush which I find hard to understand. It takes five minutes to drive from one side of the town to the other even in peak hour traffic and people always seem to be in a hurry or late to get somewhere. People in Blenheim seem to think if they are on a road and going forward they have the right of way. There is no empathy or humility with regards to letting people in from residential properties, gas stations, businesses or side streets. I always let people in even though I have a stressful driving job and am always behind with time. Then I watch behind to see if the next person does the same thing as this is normal behaviour in big cities merging like a zip. Generally this doesn’t happen as people are to self absorbed and don’t realise that in the bigger picture this helps them out as well. The fact is if no one actually let anyone out or in to the NPD gas station at peak hour the place will with more population gridlock. This is why people in big cities like Auckland, Sydney and London think of others and let people in and if they do something to upset someone they wave to acknowledge it’s their fault and are sorry. There are a lot of elderly in Blenheim that make mistakes while driving and we need to look out for these people not sit on our horns and scare them because of anger and frustration. One day I had to reverse out of a drive way and the traffic was all stopped with road works. I checked to see it was clear waited for a four wheel drive to pass and then continued reversing. I reversed straight into a little car and dented both doors. The lady said she thought I would stop. When I was reversing she couldn’t wait three metres for 30 seconds even though the traffic was stopped with council lollipop

and Hundalee areas, which only partly covers the hole. Who is responsible for this bad repairing, and when can we expect the job to be done properly? Sincerely, Cheap and nasty.

people. A truck driver came down and said to me he saw everything and morally it wasn’t my fault but people in Blenheim won’t stop. It cost me no time or money as my insurance paid the bill but the lady who couldn’t wait had to make many trips to the panel beater, drive a loan car for a week and doesn’t have a mint car anymore because of lack of patience. I had the impression Market Street was a pedestrian friendly area but people speed down it not looking out for people crossing. Just because the parked vehicles are close and limit driver’s vision doesn’t make it acceptable. I don’t want to sound like I am stereotyping drivers but I have noticed middle age women speed everywhere in their little brand new Japanese cars where as elderly men are cautious and drive slow. If you are at the intersection on Kinross and Redwood Streets trying to cross and there are types of this demographic going in opposite directions it is impossible to cross safely. I have allowed myself 200 metre’s to reverse out on to a main road in a 50km area and when I’m just about to move forward I hear the unforgiving sound of someone sitting on their horn because I have stopped their speeding flow down the road and they can’t stop for five seconds. I have seen someone toot when someone pulled out in front of them and then pull into a house a few drive ways up the road because they put them out by a few metres. I hear that people in Blenheim are proud there are no traffic lights and I agree if one set of lights was installed it would change the whole flow of traffic. But if people started leaving five minutes early, being courteous to others and stopping this righteous ego centric attitude it could help someone other than you, save a child and make Blenheim an easier place to travel round for everyone. Let someone else go first who knows you might brighten up there day. Regards Anonymous

Retired teacher shares QSM recognition Ngakuta Bay resident, retired teacher and keen conservationist, Andrew John, has received the honour of a Queen’s Service Medal for 2020. He talks to reporter Celeste Alexander about how he became involved in conservation and what this award means to him. It’s been nearly four months since Ngakuta Bay resident, Andrew John, found out he was to receive a Queen’s Service Medal, as part of the New Year’s Honours list for 2020, but the surprise has still not worn off. Andrew was awarded for his services to conservation and education, in particular for his involvement with Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary and efforts to educate students on conservation. “Am I used to the idea? I never will be,” he laughs. “A letter arrived from the Prime Minister’s office last September asking if I’d accept the award and I was a bit stunned. “I do what I do because I enjoy it. I’ve always enjoyed nature and had an instinct to work with kids, so naturally I like to bring the two together,” he says. Andrew volunteers for Forest and Bird, Birds NZ and Kaipupu Point Sanctuary. He provides support in the way of organising events, tree planting projects and by being on the management team for the Kaipupu Point Sanctuary. It’s a role that comes easily to Andrew, a retired science teacher, who has spent the past decade visiting schools to share with students the different aspects of conservation work. “One side of what I’ve been doing is working with Picton School teacher Helen Boudier who is really keen on conservation. I’ve been going into her class for an afternoon once a week for

the last 10 years, talking with students and teaching them about different aspects of what we do at the sanctuary, Forest & Bird, and general conservation work. “She’s a good support and we do fun things with the kids.” “It’s a nice feeling when you get comments from the kids on a bird they’ve seen or plants they’ve identified in their garden,” he says. The award and recognition is not something Andrew is willing to accept alone. He also credits his wife, Dianne, who herself is heavily involved with local conservation efforts. “Dianne has a love for birds and she led the way with the bird conservation side of things. She’s involved with bird monitoring, particularly with Birding NZ as well as trapping work in the bay here. “She was thrilled with the award and proud of what we’ve achieved. It’s also made possible thanks to all of the support from those involved in these organisations. There’s lots of support in Picton for this work and we all work together; it’s very much a combined effort. “With the award I got a letter of congratulations from PM Jacinda Adern in which she wrote; ‘It is an acknowledgement of your contribution and of those who have supported you and your work’. This summarises the way I feel,” he says. Andrew first got involved after moving to Ngakuta Bay in 2001. He and Dianne are originally from a little town

near Swansea in Wales. He worked as a relief teacher with all of the colleges, but mostly at Queen Charlotte College. Around 2006 when Kaipupu Point Sanctuary took off, he got

involved in the teaching side of the operation. He would visit classes and talk about bird life, predators and what’s taking place at the sanctuary, then give guided walks to those students.

“It’s the sort of thing that the more the public learns about what’s possible and what we can achieve, then other suburbs like Blenheim might have their own predator free areas too one day,” he says.

Summer Dining Four Seasons Shanghai

Four seasons shanghai restaurant

Authentic Chinese cuisine When it comes to trying new flavours and a menu that boasts of being ‘traditional Chinese food’, there’s plenty to like at Redwoodtown’s newest destination – Four Seasons Shanghai Restaurant. The restaurant is owned by Blenheim couple, Yun He and Huizhen Xiao, who arrived in New Zealand from Shanghai 12 years ago. It was their desire for true, authentic Chinese food which inspired them to open their own restaurant last year in June, which is located on the road side of the new Redwood Hub building. Inside, the restaurant extends its focus on Chinese

tradition by including it throughout the décor. Diners can enjoy the lanterns, Beijing opera masks and Chinese paintings which convey the meaning of happiness, prosperity and fortune. The menu is exciting, fresh and a celebration of Chinese cuisine. Asked which were some of the more popular dishes, the couple say the community has embraced everything on offer. “But if we were to choose the most popular, they would be the Kong Pu Chicken, the Sizzling Black Pepper Beef served on an iron plate, and the Sliced Pork Belly with Garlic Sauce,” they say. The menu also offers up

dishes including lamb, seafood and vegetarian options. “Our Stir-fried Lamb and Crispy Squid Salt and Pepper are also popular. And people love our tofu and eggplant dishes,” Yun adds. “The menu includes the sweet tastes of Southern China and the spicy tastes of Northern China.” Four Seasons Shanghai Restaurant is open seven days a week. From Monday through to Sunday, it’s open for dinner from 4.30pm til late for both dining and takeaway. For anyone wanting lunch, the restaurant is open Tuesday through to Sunday from 11.30am – 2pm.

Top baby names in NZ for 2019 According to Births, Deaths, and Marriages New Zealand, a new baby name has taken out the top spot for girls’ baby names in 2019. Amelia has now replaced Charlotte as the most popular baby name for girls, while Oliver still remains the most favoured baby name for boys. It comes as a surprise that Amelia has now overtaken Charlotte as the most popular girls’ baby name, because although Amelia has been on the list of the top 10 baby names in New Zealand since 2011, Charlotte and Olivia are the two names that have continued to swap between first and second place multiple times over that period. Perhaps influenced by the royals or the McCaws, Charlotte was the top name for females in 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018. On this year’s list of the top 10 baby girl names in New Zealand, Isla came in third. Noah is the second most popular name for boys and Leo the third. When it comes to Maori baby names, Mia and Nikau are the most popular.

The two are followed closely by Aria and Mikaere. Nikau remains the top candidate for the most popular Maori boy’s name, having been number one on the list for many years. It is now the second year that Mia has topped the list for girls’ names.

Colourful run happening this Saturday Tie your hair back, get dressed in some old clothing, don some googles, and head to Picton’s Port Marlborough Pavillion this Saturday, January 11, for the Rainbow Run 2020! The event will run from 10am until just after 12pm. Tickets cost $5 for children aged five

to 16, $10 for adults, and $25 for a family of two adults and three children. Children under five free. All attendees must be wearing a wristband to take part: tickets can be swapped for wristbands at registration on the day. Hopai Sports a success once again By Aimee O’Hagan

Last Saturday, January 4, saw a multitude of Marlburians flock to Marlborough Sounds’ Hopai Bay to attend the annual Hopai Sports Day, which celebrated it’s 100th anniversary this year. A widely anticipated and popular occasion, the event involves

attendees taking part in a range of sports contests: from egg-andspoon races to gumboot throwing competitions, marathons, boat races, gumboot-throwing contests, and much more. There was even a 1900s period-costume dress-up competition held at this year’s Hopai Sports Day, and a small store set up on

site sold products such as mugs, honey, cards, calenders, and commemorative hats. According to Hopai Sports committee secretary, Ketta Gerard, the day “went off with a bang”. The event brought in a “huge crowd” of 1000 adults and a similar number of children – the largest attendance the event has

seen for many years. “All races were heavily contested with many entrants,” Ketta says. “With fine weather, the day was enjoyed by all.” She describes the day as a “huge success” and hopes that the “traditional family day” will continue to thrive in the years to come.

Speedway welcomes new year with a bang By Celeste Alexander

Streetstocks are a class which are never too shy to get in amongst the field and bash their way around the speedway track, and last Saturday night’s race meeting at Eastern States Speedway was a great example of this. The club hosted the Streetstock Challenge Cup which saw Blenheim and Nelson put together streetstock teams which went on to battle it out for bragging rights. The teams; Marlborough Misfits and Nelson Knights put on a spectacular show for the crowd. Local drivers Anthony Gane (4e), Sydney Briggs (8e), Calvin Aberhart (15e), Jacob Lutherus (22e), Anthony Clark (48e) and Daniel Honey (721e) took to the track with the intention to send Nelson packing. While each of the three races were strongly dominated by Nelson cars, local Anthony

Clark managed to place in the top three of each. This however was not enough for ESS to take the win which went to the Nelson Knights. To add some lighthearted fun to the evening, the Clark Photography Biggest Stirrer award was presented to Simon Bland (31v). The first round of the Precision Auto Centre Streetcar Series kicked off on Saturday with a lineup of local and one Nelson driver registered for this feature. Three heats were held and now sitting at the top of the leaderboard are; Darryl Roberts (47e) on 88 points, Matthew Vincent (17e) on 85 points and in third place, Mike Taylor (74e) on 78 points. The Production 2K Cup was another big feature event for the night which saw two groups race over two heats. Emerging from the dust were three top place getters. Congratulations to Frank Burns (66e) in first place, George Jackson (34e) in

second, and Brett Allan (888e) in third. The final big event for the night was the Marlborough Saloon Champs which saw only one local driver, Hamish Fearn (71e), go up against visiting Christchurch drivers. After a great night of racing it was Willie Woodhouse (71c) who took top

spot with 90 points, followed by Danny Knight (5c) on 87 points, then Billie Woodhouse (117c) on 83 points. The next race meeting at Eastern States Speedway will be February 1 with the Stockcar Battle of the Vines – Round 2, and Streetcar Series – Round 2.
