Flash back

By Celeste Alexander

At the end of this month the public might think they are having a flashback to the 70s when they see half a dozen former patrol vehicles driving about Marlborough. Anyone who remembers the days when road safety was policed by the Traffic Safety Service, an entity which was part of the Ministry of Transport, will recall seeing traffic officers driving older style vehicles like the 1937 Ford V8 Coupe or the V8 powered Holden Kingswood. From 1937 the majority of road traffic enforcement and education work was the responsibility of the Ministry of Transport, Brian Smith pictured just before his retirement with one of the three coloured-patrol vehicles, the Holden SV6, introduced to the Tasman region in 2014; very different from the days when he drove a Holden Kingswood as a traffic officer. meaning the Traffic Safety Service was run separately to the New Zealand Police. But in 1992 the service was transferred to the Police after the National Party came into power and commenced a process of splitting up the Ministry into State Owned Enterprises, Crown entities, or selling it to the private sector. This saw the once well recognised black and white patrol cars and matching uniforms of the MoT disappear overnight. A reunion is being held in Blenheim later this month which will see former traffic officers from all over the country come together for the two day event beginning January 31. Continued on page 2.

TWICE WEEKLY

Former traffic officers set for reunion Continued from page 1. During that time, a number of traffic officers transferred over to the NZ Police while others pursued other options. These stories and many more will be shared among the 188 people attending a reunion being held in Blenheim over two days beginning January 31, for former local body and MoT traffic officers, organised by two local couples; Bruce and Claire Wood and Bev and Richard Pottinger. One of those attending is a former traffic officer who transferred to the NZ Police, spending a total of 42 years in service to both – local man and retired senior constable, Brian Smith. Brian began his career in Christchurch in 1973, working as a motorcycle officer. Six years later he transferred to the West Coast and was given a Holden Kingswood for his patrol vehicle. “I thought that was Christmas,” he laughs. “Back then the vehicle was yours alone to use and you treated it like it was your pride and joy.” He recalls one memorable incident when he came across what resembled a car towing a caravan. “There wasn’t much left of the car which was missing quite a bit of the body. It belonged to a squatter who had been kicked off some land and had been using county roads on his way from Waiutu to Blackball. “But he had a 5km stretch of the highway he needed to travel, so it was a bit of bad luck for him that I was there,” he jokes. He says his time working as a traffic officer was “really enjoyable” with plenty of variety before the merger took place and he transferred to the NZ Police. “I loved every minute with the MoT

and I worked with a great bunch of people. You would often work by yourself so when I stopped someone I was always aware that the first thing out of my mouth would determine how the rest of the interaction would go. “I always believed that you treat people how you would expect to be treated. “It was interesting work and back then our job was varied, but when the merger took place a lot of that variety disappeared overnight,” he says. In 2004 Brian joined the Marlborough Police and was with the Highway Patrol group. He retired around five years ago, but months before he did his last vehicle was the newly introduced red Holden SV6. Brian will be among many attending the reunion which will see people from all over the country attending, Richard says. Richard, who himself is a retired MoT traffic officer, says these reunions are held throughout the country but it’s the second time it’s been a nationwide event. “My wife and I were at last year’s reunion where she put her hand up and suggested we host it in Blenheim. “It’s not political, just a fun get-together. Some of the people coming are still active in the Police force,” he says. Attendees will enjoy events held at the Clubs of Marlborough where photographs and functions will be held over the two days. Outside in the carpark will be the former patrol vehicles, including one motorcycle, which have been restored and are now privately owned. “People will be curious when they see these vehicles… they’re still in their original condition,” Richard adds.

George completes inspirational swim

The Sun

100 years of racing at Waterlea

For 17 year-old Blenheim local and Marlborough Boys’ College head boy for 2020, George Glover, the last three weeks have been incredibly life-changing. A week ago, George arrived back in Anakiwa after spending ten days swimming the length of the Queen Charlotte Sound. Not once, but twice. It was all for the Black Dog Swim, an initiative started by George to raise money for kiwi mental health organisation, I Am Hope NZ, with all funds going towards kickstarting youth mental health programmes around the country and assisting those who suffer from mental illness to get the help they need. George’s original aim was to raise $50,000 for the charity. Instead, the final amount exceeded a massive $62,000. “It’s so cool... [Especially] to see everyone that chipped in,” he says. “But it wasn’t about the swim, it wasn’t about me: it was about mental health and bringing people together.” Throughout the lengthy swim, George was joined by a support crew made up of “the elite of the elite”; people from businesses around Marlborough and the rest of New Zealand who wanted to show George that they believed in him. Supporters included experienced river, lake, and ocean swimmer, Dave Edgar; adventure racer, Dan Moore; president of the Old Boys’ Association, Ross Anderson; Tasman District Police senior constable, Glen Richardson; Jon Haack from Haack Construction, and many more.

The Marlborough Harness Racing Club will host its annual two day summer meeting this Friday January 17 and Sunday January 19 at Waterlea Raceway. Friday’s meeting will be a twilight affair beginning at 2:50pm with Sunday set to be a traditional family day. Join in with celebrations for 100 years of racing at Waterlea. See advert on back page.

Drop for Youth fundraising quiz night

“It was awesome to make those connections,” George says. “I couldn’t have had a better support crew. “It was great to spend the holidays in the Marlborough Sounds, swimming with some good blokes. “I’d say most of the challenges [throughout the swim] were mitigated because of the people on board.” When discussing what these exact challenges were, George says there wasn’t really one thing that stood

out to him. “The whole swim was a challenge,” he laughs. “It was just one big, long slog.” According to George, he could have finished the swim in five days – the time of day he swam the ten different legs of the race were based on the patterns of the tides and the currents – but he decided it would be best for his health to space it out a bit. “At one point, we were going at the speed of 12 minutes per kilometre,”

George mentions. “The Olympic 1500 metre swims are holding speeds that are about the same. “That’s just crazy.” George’s plans for the future include taking part in a possible 48 hour swim at “the town pool” – but for now, he is content with resting and reflecting on the task he just undertook. “If my swim gets people talking about mental health, I’ve done my job,” George smiles.

Blenheim local, Phillipa Hyndman, is holding a music and musical-theatrethemed quiz night this Saturday, January 18, at 7pm, at the Blenheim Musical Theatre rooms on Lakings Road, with all money going towards the Graeme Dingle Foundation. It’s all for the foundation’s Drop for Youth initiative, which will see Phillipa and a collection of other brave Marlburians go skydiving for charity. Maximum six people in a team. Cost is $10 per person. BYO snacks. Raffles are available. RSVP by this Friday, January 17, to Phillipa: 0277132603 or phily_o_fish@hotmail.com.

Lucky Lotto winners in Blenheim Two Lotto players from Marlborough won $15,256 each in Saturday’s Second Division live Lotto draw. Fourteen others from around New Zealand were also winners in the draw. The winning tickets were purchased at PAKnSave Blenheim and New World Blenheim.

When schools send their students away for camps there’s always a huge amount of luggage and supplies that go with them. Likewise with sports groups, carting around equipment can mean a lot of extra baggage so having access to a community hire trailer can take away a lot of the hassle. This was the thinking of Agrivit directors, Clare Kilty and Jeremy Watts, who recently purchased a new shuttle trailer for the purpose of making it available to Marlborough schools and sports teams for free hire. Clare says from past experience, accessing trailers to transport gear for school camps is difficult and felt it would be a good way to support the community. “We think it will be successful,” she says. “The stadium has a similar community trailer which is always in use so it will be great to have two available in the community.” Also supporting Agrivit’s purchase of the trailer is agricultural company, Croplands. Agrivit builds Croplands Quantum Mist sprayers and are Marlborough’s only authorised Croplands service agent and because of this

More public housing set to be built across region By Celeste Alexander

Late last year in October a new agency, Kainga Ora, was created and is now responsible for providing public housing, home related financial assistance and delivering aspects of the Government’s Build Programme. With public housing (state houses) there is a big push for new homes to be built to help meet demand for public housing. Kainga Ora has announced that is has plans to build at least eight new homes for tenants and their whanau across the Marlborough area this financial year. There are 427 Kainga Ora homes in Marlborough; 12 of which are new homes built in the 2018/19 financial year. A spokesperson says 12 homes are currently vacant due to a variety of reasons; routine maintenance/refurbishments between tenancies, awaiting re-development or long term work to fix significant damage. Two of these vacant houses are awaiting redevelopment and three are waiting for work relating to subsidence. Kainga Ora’s investment of more houses will help to modernise its housing stock while

providing more modern warm, dry homes for tenants, area manager, Dale Bradley, says. “The investment includes homes of different bedroom numbers and sizes to help meet demand for public housing.” Dale also states that on top

of a $500,000 investment this financial year in maintaining its existing homes, this new build programme “re-affirms” Kainga Ora’s commitment to existing and new tenants. The spending on maintenance includes painting, fencing,

roofing and driveway safety improvements. “We’re really proud to have built some new houses in the last year in Marlborough, and it’s wonderful to see that will continue in this current financial year,” he says.

Zakea achieves Olympic performance dream Twenty-one year-old Massey student Zakea Page, who previously lived in Blenheim, has achieved his lifelong dream of performing at an Olympic opening ceremony, in Lausanne, Switzerland, at the Winter Youth Olympic Games recently. Za kea per for med h is unique artform, which blends sport and art, in front of thousands at Vaudoise Aréna on January 9, making him the first person to design a Youth Olympic medal and perform at an opening ceremony of a Youth Olympic Games. A passionate hockey player, he executes fast-paced, energetic painting performances using a hockey stick and a ball soaked in Chinese ink. “My ultimate life ambition has been to perform at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, so to be able to achieve that is incredibly humbling,” he says. Zakea won an international competition to design the medal for the Youth Olympic Games in April 2019. His design, Beauty in Diversity, which was rendered by fellow Massey student Ryan Ardern, beat more than 300 entries from 60 countries. As a result, he travelled to Lausanne for the games where he received the gold, silver and bronze medals from the president of the International Olympic Com-

cry and half the world cheer at once – sport has immense power, and so does art.” Zakea credits studying at Massey with helping him achieve his ambitions. “The peers, mentors and friendships I’ve developed at Massey have really helped me elevate my craft and myself as a person.”

Saturday morning saw the fun and colourful event, FreshChoice Picton Rainbow Run, held at Picton's Port Marlborough Pavillion. Those who came along completed a 1km run - or did it twice - and got doused in colourful powder at the end. The event started at 10am and continued on until just before midday. Many attended, with all going away with rainbow-coloured clothing. Photo supplied. More photographs in The Sun's Out and About section on page 14.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street.

Q: What are your thoughts on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s desire to step down from royal duties?

Brian Allen Blenheim I think they’re quite welcome to leave if they want to, but they shouldn’t be financially supported by the British Government if they do.

Catherine Donnelly Blenheim I understand about mental health issues and the need for space, but it wasn’t respectful to the Queen or the right way to go about it.

Elizabeth Aitken Blenheim It seems to me that Meghan as an American doesn’t understand the Royal family at all and how to behave in a royal manner. Harry is only sixth in line to the throne so it won’t make a difference, but I’m sure the Queen is very upset.

Peter Watt Blenheim They have the right to their own lives but they have to work with the other family members. Bearing in mind that Harry is sixth in line to the throne, I’m supportive of what they are doing. It’s the 20th century, the monarchy has to get with the programme.

Tricia Dawson Blenheim It must be disappointing for the rest of the Royal family, but Meghan and Harry have to do what they’ve got to do to take care of themselves.

Logan Lowther Blenheim It’s kind of wrong that they’re leaving. [Meghan] knew what she was getting into when she joined the Royal family. She can’t really do it then leave London.

Cape Campbell Dear Ed, As Councillor Gerald Hope said; Cape Campbell was previously a remote wilderness. That was before the earthquake lifted the land. The only way there was along the beach or through a couple of farm properties that border the Cape now after the earthquake has become remote wilderness and accessible to the general public, even if it is by four wheel drive vehicles, which makes it like a lot of other remote wilderness around NZ. The earthquake has changed a lot of things, not only for us humans,

but also other animals and sea life as well, including Cape Campbell. It has now given us access to the Cape for all that wish to venture out there. We all have to learn to live with these changes even if that is driving out to the Cape in four wheel drives. Then it becomes the new norm to deny people that right on the basis that there COULD be long term effects is not on, you have to remember that it was nature that caused this situation, not man. Nature can look after itself without any inteference from us. M Whitmee.

Clearing misconceptions In yesterday’s (8/1) Letters to the Editor, a concerned driver was highlighting the impatience of some Blenheim drivers. While I basically concur with them I’d like to clarify a couple of issues. The first being reversing out onto a main road or car parking space. While the onus is on the reversing vehicle I would agree legally it would be better if it was on the driver of the vehicle coming from behind, as they have uninterrupted vision. However, it’s a mystery to me, why the NZTA allows vehicles to reverse onto a main road, when it is fraught with danger. Much better to reverse park, as they do in many overseas countries. And whereas in some NZ provinces main road angled parking

is such that one drives out of a parked bay with the direction of the traffic flow rather than reversing blind into the on-coming traffic - dangerously non sensical - all provinces should adopt it, or better still, it to become the correct and legal procedure. Also mentioned about sounding the horn; which we tend to judge as a sign of anger. The real use of the horn is to warn and inform another driver of the consequences of an action, nothing more. So if you do get honked, it’s to let you know of a possible intending collision, and therefore take some appropriate action. Lastly, yes some drivers automatically feel they have the right of way when approaching a roundabout, at

speed, from the right side of another vehicle, but if that vehicle is at the give-way sign before them, then it’s perfectly entitled to enter the roundabout and the other vehicle must give way, as they are now on the roundabout ie exactly the same as one would at a stop sign controlled cross road intersection. So often I see drivers intending to enter a roundabout while they are 10 metres or more away from the give-way sign, and so coming up at speed intimidates another driver who’s already there. Trusting that clears up any misconceptions. Chris Davies Past traffic signal engineer UK and Australia

Emma’s changing pace with horses Emma Dippie’s one constant has been horses but the past year has taken her in a new direction. The harness racing hopeful and current stable hand with Blenheim’s Anne-Marie Best, talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about her time in the sulky and her impressions of the sport and the industry. The first time Emma Dippie drove a harness horse, something just clicked. “After the first day I thought ‘this is for me’. “Just sitting behind a horse and the power they have, it’s quite amazing,” she says. The 22-year-old Marlborough Girls’ College alum had been passionate about horses all her life and after several years competing in equestrian, she was keen to make her next move. “I did a course down at Telford and then I went to work for (champion show jumper) Logan Massie in Dannevirke for a year and then it’s been Harness racing for the past year.” Emma admits the switch from equestrian to harness racing was rare. “I came home for a holiday and Anne-Marie was needing some help so I did that and I got hooked. “My close family aren’t big on horses - my parents thought it was a phase. “When I was younger, I had a rocking horse and that was probably the start of it. “When I was a teenager I convinced them to get me a horse - an ex-thoroughbred Smoogie. I did a bit of everything with her, show jumping, dressage, trekking. “She’s now chilling out fully retired in Seddon. Emma’s goal in the short-term is to get her junior drivers license which

will allow her to drive in races. At present she drives Anne-Marie’s horses at the trials. “Along with all the paperwork, you need 25 trials drives to become a junior driver which I’m about halfway through. “I actually won my first trial and Anne-Marie was on another horse behind me yelling at me all the way round the track to make sure it went well.

“After the first day I thought ‘this is for me’.” “It’s good being in a small stable, you learn more and you’re with the trainer more. “Anne-Marie has four in work at the moment.” All four horses will compete at Blenheim’s two-day meeting this Friday and Sunday. It will be Emma’s job to be handson with all the pre and post-race duties on the day. She says the stables’ best hope is Valley Star. Emma’s ultimate goal is to train a winner herself one day but she is keen to show what she can do on the track before then.

On top of all their interests, the family has also built on, and introduced, some events to Renwick including the highly popular annual Pig & Deer Hunt and a Speed Shear. “We’ve worked really hard to create an inclusive environment here at the Woody,” Rowan says. “We like to provide family friendly events and in general, bring the community together. “Through these events we’ve seen a number of families grow; including youngsters we’d see with their parents who are now older and coming into the tavern. “There are even kids we used to see bringing in possums and rabbits to our pig hunt events that are now in their late teens and out hunting with their mates. This is the neat thing about being here…

we see families grow,” he says. The Woodbourne Tavern has its own unique following with a number of locals who have continued to support it for many years, Stacey says. “When we took over I remember one of our customers telling me she had her own seat and not to change things. She still comes in and sits in that same seat each week and is part of our lives now. “This is the same with many of our regulars. We even have overseas travellers coming in who have been told about the Woodbourne Tavern and have come to stay as they passed through,” she says. Behind every good business is a dedicated crew of staff, which is another reason why the Woodbourne Tavern does so well, Stacey says. “All of our staff are fantastic and play such a crucial part in our business. Kerri has been with us since the beginning and we’ve had staff leave to start families and are now back with us. “We really encourage growth and training and I think that’s a big part of why we have such a good team,” she says.

Food and good old fashioned service Over the past 10 years, Woodbourne Tavern & Motels owners, Rowan Ingpen, Stacey Goodwin, Richard Marlow and Adrianna Ingpen, have seen a number of changes take place within the business. The number of staff has increased from seven to now 20, the function side of the business has grown, fundraising quiz nights are held more frequently, and a big emphasis has been made on food. “The menu is an important part of our business and we’ve made a lot of good changes there,” Stacey says. “We want to provide good quality pub grub as well as offering something for all tastes. “One thing people really like are our buffets. We’ve had birthdays, weddings, funerals, reunions… pretty much all types of events held and catered for here.

Proud to be the Woodbourne Tavern’s preferred hospitality supply partner. Total supply, every occasion

“We also have a popular burger menu, and with all of the ingredients we use we source it all locally where we can. We have

excellent suppliers who provide us with beautiful fresh fish, and we use meat from the Renwick Meat Market next door,” she says.

Four years ago the family also expanded on its operations by purchasing a Bottle-O franchise which has been well supported.

Proud to supply the Woodbourne Tavern. Congratulations on 10 years in business!

A day of celebrations planned Celebrating a decade in business is something the owners and staff at the Woodbourne Tavern & Motels are looking forward to. Saturday, January 25 will be 10-years to the day when Rowan Ingpen, Stacey Goodwin, Richard Marlow and Adrianna Ingpen took over the business and it’s a celebration they want to share with the community.

Because they encourage an ‘all inclusive’ environment, they have chosen to hold two events that day; one being for families including young children, and another later in the evening for people over the age of 18. The family friendly afternoon will run from 3pm – 7pm and feature music from local band, Double Shot, bouncy castles, face-painting

Then from 7pm there will be an R18 party held with live music from bands Gold Rush from 7pm – 10pm, and from 10pm – 2am Grumpy Monkey. “It’s going to be a good old-fashioned party as a way for us to say

Blenheim photographer wins national award Marlborough photographer Matt Winter’s expertly timed photo of two paradise shelducks in perfect symmetry has won the inaugural Game Bird Habitat Trust’s photo competition. It is incredibly rare for a photographer to be able to capture two birds in flight and in perfect symmetry. The stunning photo was judged the best paradise shelduck photo by judges Mark Mitchell (award

winning NZME photographer based in Wellington) and Richard Cosgrove (former Fairfax Media Visual Manager). Matt, an author of several books and articles on the New Zealand outdoors, is often out “hunting” with a camera. Asked what the secret is to great wildlife photography, Matt says that it is “patience in many forms. The patience to learn about your

game and the patience to spend many hours out in the field waiting for that perfect photo”. The winning photo will now be used as the 2020 game bird habitat stamp. This stamp is sold on gamebird hunting licences and as a collectors stamp by NZ Post, and raises funds for the protection and enhancement of game bird and other wildlife Matt Winter’s winning photograph. An incredible 100 year milestone was recently celebrated by Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd, marking a century for this iconic company. Based in Havelock, it’s owned and operated by Peter and Jennie Johnson who are the third generation to continue on the Johnson family business. The original intention of Eric Johnson to provide a reliable service and be adaptable to clients’ needs, all at a fair price, is still the company’s aim 100 years later. “NEVER UNPREPARED.”

It has been 20 years since Marlborough Motorcycles owners, Brendon and Cathy Wadsworth, launched their business from home. Humble beginnings quickly grew to a larger scale operation covering motorcross, enduro and trail riding, and the opening of a premise on Grove Road. Then in recent years the couple purchased Peter Grinter Motorcycles, a business which has operated since 1981, putting two well established motorcycle names under one roof. Today, Marlborough Motorcycles holds the Can-Am and Kawasaki dealerships and provides sales and servicing for all forms of motorcycles.

FIRE AND EMERGENCY IS SEEKING LOCAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBERS IN YOUR AREA Help us make your community more resilient in an emergency. Want to contribute to a stronger, safer Aotearoa? Here’s an opportunity to ensure your community’s interests are reflected in our local and national planning. You’ll also be supporting your community to be more connected and resilient in an emergency. Fire and Emergency New Zealand is establishing Local Advisory Committees (LACs) across the country to help us understand each community’s current and future needs. This will help us better support you to reduce risk, prepare for and respond to emergencies, and recover quickly when they happen. LACs will help shape our support for your community, by providing a strong local perspective on what matters. As part of a LAC, you’d be representing your community’s understanding of local risks and issues. Feedback collected from your networks would inform the collective advice of the LAC, which would then be considered in Fire and Emergency’s local and national planning. We are seeking LAC members who: • want to use their knowledge and experience to make their community safer and more resilient. • are well-connected and willing to engage with a range of networks and communities of interest to gather a wider perspective (not just represent a specific group). • have a good understanding of local risks and issues.

Sound like you (or someone you know)? Nominations are now open. Find out more and download a nomination form at www.fireandemergency.nz/LACs

the Queen of the Withers and the winner of the Open Women category, finishing the run in 45:35. Lucy Harman also did very well, winning the Junior Women category with a time of 54:59.
