Tauihu unveiling By student reporter Frances Chin

The Wairau will soon have another landmark representing its deep history. This Friday the sculpture ‘Te

Tauihu o Te Waka-a-Māui’ will be unveiled. Placed outside Marlborough Railway Station and alongside Highway 1, this sculpture is over four metres tall and will be illuminated at night. Continued on page 2.

Riki Palatchie and Dr Peter Meihana pictured at the site where a sculpture, ‘Te Tauihu o te Waka-a-Māui’, will be unveiled this Friday at 4am. Riki is a Rangitāne trustee and head of the tauihu project, and Peter is a lecturer in Māori History at Massey University who has been working closely with the project.

Sculpture inspired by Waka Continued from page 1. The sculpture will be in the shape of the prow of a waka, called a tauihu. The sculpture was designed and carved by master carver Heemi Te Peeti, from Foxton, with steel and bronze casting done by The Heavy Metal Company in Wellington. The tauihu is a community project led by Te Runanga a Rangitāne o Wairau with the support of the Marlborough District Council, Rata Foundation, Pelorus Trust, WPS and Marlborough Lines.

The unveiling comes at the end of the Tuia 250 commemorations. According to Rangitāne Trustee, Dr Peter Meihana, ‘Tuia 250 is about celebrating the achievements of Polynesian navigation so it makes perfect sense that a tauihu be used to reflect that history’. Rangitāne Trustee, Riki Palatchie, says the ‘tauihu will stand alongside other sculptures in Blenheim, such as the pou whenua, Te Huataki, which also helps to retell the Māori history of our region’. Riki and Peter say the tauihu also

represents the early human history of the Wairau and the subsequent migration of Kurahaupō people from Wairarapa and Te Whanganui a Tara (Wellington). Peter says ‘the tauihu will give physical shape and form to our oral traditions’. The tauihu will also have an interpretation panel, to explain the history and symbolism behind the sculpture. Rangitāne believe the tauihu will a have positive affect on the wider Wairau community.

Peter, who teaches history at Massey University, says that as we approach 2022 and compulsory history in New Zealand schools, sculptures such as the tauihu, ‘will become an important learning tool’. According to Peter, ‘history needn’t be confined to books and the classroom’. The tauihu will be unveiled on Friday morning at 4am. The public ceremony will be led by Rangitāne Trustee, Jeremy McLeod, and Heemi Te Peeti, and run in accordance with Māori protocols.

Thieves have gone to new heights to get their hands on some cash after scaling a fence and breaking into the SPCA Marlborough centre near Renwick, last Saturday morning. Manager, Donna Sologar, was alerted by phone by the centre’s alarm system at 6.40am. She arrived shortly after to find the office had been broken into using a pair of hedge trimmers which were left at the scene, the alarm ripped off the wall and broken, cupboards all open and rifled through, and their older style till taken. Petty cash from a tin had also been taken, bringing the total amount stolen to “a few hundred”, she says. “Nothing else was touched; the computers were still here as well as cellphone sitting on the counter for emergencies…it was just the money they were after.” But what surprised Donna the most was the lengths, or rather heights that the thieves went to in order to gain access to the property. “They’ve climbed over our main gate which is the highest point of the yard,”

she says. “Plus they had to carry our old and heavy till up and over the main gate, leaving a trail of coins which must have fallen out in the process. “But the weird thing was that it was daylight when they broke in. At that time of morning we hope someone saw something and can report it to the police. “There’s a walking track beside us and the dog park nearby, so we are hoping that someone has seen suspicious looking people in the area, or a vehicle parked by the main gate. “They wouldn’t have run very far carrying that old till,” she says. Despite only being a few hundred stolen, Donna says it still has a huge impact on their charitable organisation. “We are a charity and don’t have a lot of money here. We rely on donations and adoption fees so having this money stolen, and our security system broken will have a big effect on us. “It’s just annoying but we are pleased that the animals are fine,” she says. Police have assessed the scene, taking finger prints and the hedge clippers as part of their investigation, however Donna urges anyone who has information to contact Blenheim Police.

Around 60 pilots set to take flight in bush pilot champs By Celeste Alexander

In 2013, when the very first Healthy Bastards Bush Pilot Champs was held in Blenheim, 55 pilots entered and it was everyone’s wish that this event would continue to be a success. Fast forward to 2020 and it’s now the eighth year that this hugely popular event is being held on Saturday, February 1 at the Omaka Airfield. The Bush Pilot competition was designed by the Marlborough Aero Club to promote their new flight training programme, which has a strong focus on strip flying, and hands on piloting skills. It’s supported by major sponsor Dave Baldwin of Bulls Flying Doctor Service, and is a Precision Landing, and STOL Takeoff and Landing competition held annually. What’s more, it’s caught the attention of some people in Alaska who also hold a similar event which is regarded as being the world’s main short take-off and landing (STOL) event, and are sending someone over to watch. This is hugely exciting for founding member of the Healthy Bastards Bush Pilot Champs, and event organiser, Craig Anderson. “The competition in Valdez, Alaska is a worldwide STOL event and we’d like to align ourselves with them a bit, so a couple of people are coming over to see what we do. We are also sending someone over to their event this year which is quite exciting for us,” he says. This year’s event will see up to 60 registrations from pilots

across the country including students through to commercial pilots. Around 50percent of registrations are from local pilots and in the past, pilots competing have been as young as 17. “The whole purpose of this event is to promote high quality flying,” Craig says. “It is world known and an event that attracts spectators from all over the country. “It’s starting to become an international event and attracts 80 odd aircraft on the airfield, including the people who flew in just to watch,” he says. It’s a single day event which kicks off at 10.30am and one that provides great entertainment for the public. “For me, the most exciting part of this event is when we get new pilots and students entering,” Craig says. “We often see new pilots who have been trained well, fly at the standard of the experienced pilots. “Watching a new pilot with under 100 hours of flying, perform really well… that excites me,” he says. Asked for an example of aircraft being flown, Craig says Gisborne ag-pilot, Andrew Hogarth, will be competing in his 1950s bush plane, the de Havilland Beaver. Andrew has been flying for 28-years, clocking up 15,500 hours. As well as watching the competition itself, the Marlborough Aero Club will be putting on some lunchtime entertainment for the crowd. There will be a race between

Tom Hyland’s 100 day cycle trip took him to both ends of New Zealand.

Tom Hyland celebrating when he reached Bluff.

Tom’s cycle for hope By Celeste Alexander

Blenheim man Tom Hyland is settling back into home and work life again after completing a 100 day cycling trip around the country. It was an inspiring journey which saw him connect with people from all walks of life, an idea he came up with at the age of 15 when going through his own battle with depression. Tom shared his own story in the hope of inspiring others in what was a self-funded trip that covered 6000km of road on his second hand bicycle. He says he met some incredible people along the way. “The trip definitely reinvigorated me and taught me a lot,” he says. “I realised that I had a narrow perspective on mental health. I know my own journey but after being exposed to everyone else’s stories I found

it incredible to hear how others came through their struggles and kept themselves healthy.” Asked if there were any particular special moments worthy of mentioning, Tom says “there are too many”. “If I had to narrow them down I’d say there are two which really stand out. One really special moment was when I was cycling back up the East Coast of the South Island, and I was 40km up from Oamaru heading towards Timaru. “I had my first flat tyre which itself was a flattening feeling. I had a spare tube with me but when I went to fix it on the side of the highway, two pumps with my new tyre pump and it ripped the back out of the tube. “So there I was stranded, but after five minutes a guy came past with a trailer hitched on the back, and he screeched to a halt. He drove me back to Oamaru

and helped me to fix my tyre. He shouted me lunch then drove me back to the spot where I was. “He gave me a hug and $50 for a new bike pump… he was so amazing! I was gutted with my first flat tyre but it ended up putting me in the way of this amazing guy; a real positive coming from a negative situation… it was symbolic,” Tom says. Another chance encounter with more “incredible” people came when Tom met former Olympic and world champion rower, Eve Macfarlane, who herself has battled depression. “I was staying with a friend of hers and he took me to meet Eve. We saw eye to eye on everything with mental health and she mentioned a book she was working on. “This led to her interviewing me as well as having a photoshoot; she’s a remarkable

woman and it was really special meeting her,” he says. With all of that time cycling amongst nature and some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes, Tom says every place he visited had its own “hidden gems” and beautiful scenery. “Everyday you come around a corner and see an old abandoned building or look out over beaches, but one place I’ll never forget is Cape Reinga. It’s a very special place with spiritual meaning behind it and tears were shed when I rode in.” Since arriving back over the Christmas period, Tom says he’s been quietly getting back into home life, but he has plans to share his journey and personal story. “I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who sent messages to me; they all mean a lot,” he says.

Journalist set for daring jump By Celeste Alexander

In a month’s time, a number of people will be jumping out of a plane to skydive for charity. The Graeme Dingle Foundation has been signing people up to be their ‘daring troopers’ as part of the organisation’s Drop for Youth Marlborough fundraiser which takes place on February 22 with Abel Tasman Skydive. Already there are 24 participants who have their Givealittle pages up and running, which provides the public and their supporters with a way to make donations. The Sun Newspaper is proud to support Drop for Youth Marlborough, but not just by being there; but by also having one of their reporters, Aimee O’Hagan, take the 9000ft plunge. Aimee, who joined the Sun team 12 months ago, says skydiving has always been something she wanted to experience to “tick it off my

bucket list”. “What better reason than to also raise money for a great local organisation,” she says. “It’s going to be terrifying doing this but for now I’m not feeling the panic; but on the plane looking out it will set in. “It will be very scary but worth it. The Graeme Dingle Foundation provides a lot of great programmes within the community for kids, such as Kiwi Can. They’re all about helping kids tackle the world and learning to use good strategies to develop positive relationships and resilience.” Applications are still being taken for those wanting to sign up for Drop for Youth Marlborough. Asked why she would recommend it to others, Aimee says for “the same reason as I’m doing it”. “To face your fears and to show youth that there will be obstacles in life that they must face during their lives, but with the right tools and knowledge these obstacles can be overcome,” she says.

Also taking part in the Drop for Youth fundraiser is Sanfords manager, Ted Culley. Ted is currently leading the fundraising efforts with more than $23,000 in donations. Of the 24 participants in this event to date they have raised more than $37,000. But with your help this amount could be even more. So far the aquaculture and wine industries are well represented while other industries include education, media, engineering, food distribution, viticulture and winemaking, a funeral director and community members. Signing up is simple; to find out more and to register, email marlborough@dinglefoundation.org.nz A Givealittle page is then set up for participants, then all they need to do is raise a minimum of $1000. Removal of 4% rate cap What’s behind the CEO of the MDC suggested removal of the 4% rate cap??? Recently the CEO of MDC said there was no need to continue the council’s self imposed annual rates increase to under 4%; which I find quite startling. Firstly, why does there need to be any annual increase above the CPI or at all? The MDC owns three large corporations which feed in considerable profits to the council, yet we have never had a global set of accounts to show this, which was promised by the Mayor at a ratepayers attended candidate election rally in Waikawa. Surely, any new capital items should be paid out of these profits or used to help keep rates down. Secondly, with the CPI running at less than 2% for the past few years how can he justify such a statement. Even the Mayor stated at the time of the council elections; “he saw no need for constant rate increases now that

the council had completed most of it’s long term projects.” If we take a 4% annual increase and project it over 10 years then rates will have increased by 50%. And with interest compounding annually, to 100% in just eight more years. That is a phenomenal increase. The reason why MDC has one of the best debt ratios in NZ is because of limiting rate increases. Lets keep living within our means. Thank you, Chris Davies. Response from the Marlborough District Council Dear Editor, Council is continually taking steps to reduce rate increases. The 2019/20 rates were forecast at 5.72% but were reduced to 3.62%. Our 2018-28 Long Term Plan shows a less than 50% rate increase over the next eight years, and for most of the next 10 years rates are forecast to go below our rate limit.

Courtesy towards job seekers Our highest priority is to complete major capital projects to accommodate Marlborough’s growth and improve environmental outcomes. They include new water storage and treatment plants in Renwick and Havelock, water and sewerage infrastructure in Picton, and the upgrade of stormwater and wastewater in north-west Blenheim to enable residential housing development. Our capital spend last year was $49.3m, the second highest level ever. We publish our accounts as a stand-alone entity and as a consolidated group including subsidiaries, in our Annual Report. In an independent survey each year, three quarters of Marlburians say they are satisfied with the services they receive from their Council. Mid way through last year my family and I moved to the Blenheim area. As part of our relocation, my husband and I both needed to secure employment. Six months on, my husband has found himself a position but sadly I am still looking. Since August of last year, I have applied for over 70 positions in various roles and for various businesses in the area. My search for employment has left me feeling very disappointed and completely disillusioned with many of the places I have applied. It seems that the age of technology has taken away the basic values of courtesy and politeness. It is amazing the number of positions that I have applied for where I have not even had an acknowledgement that I have applied for the position, yet alone had any kind of follow up or follow through to let me know that my application has been unsuccessful. I feel that in 2020 it is time that businesses in Blenheim wake up. Not only am I a potential employee of your business, I am also a poten-

tial customer, client or I will know someone who may potentially be considering using your product or your service. If you cannot even have the decency to acknowledge the time I have taken to show interest in working for you, then why would I ever consider giving you my business or referring you to someone else? It is time that businesses in Blenheim stopped being so arrogant and remembered that without clients or customers you quickly have no business. In this age of technology it is not hard to have an automated email set up to at the very minimum acknowledge someone’s application. It is not hard to thank someone for taking the time to show interest in becoming part of your team. Even if the person is not going to be successful and get the position, at least you have left them with some sense of goodwill towards you. Yours sincerely Potential customer/client as well as employee

There are other people who like me are concerned about all the pine trees being planted and the explosion this has meant in the amount of wilding pines all over the South Island. Isn’t it ironic that the government has spent 17 million dollars and just given DOC another million dollars to combat these trees at the same time as we are busy planting billions of these trees all over our iconic high country? It’s being done to save the planet and being good for the environment. What a joke that is! Nothing lives in a pine plantation and when the trees are felled it is utter devastation. Just go for a drive to Nelson and

see the destroyed hill sides with erosion and any bits of regenerating native bush destroyed. Just having this happening on my own farm where foresters have just ploughed their way through a small piece of regenerating native bush destroying the trees, the habitat for numerous native critters and a small area of native clematis. Oh so good for the environment! Not! The most amazing thing is that it is their right. Here we are celebrating anyone out there planting a few natives, and we should, but at the same time ignoring the thousand of native trees being destroyed every day during logging. Water is another issue being ignored. Pine

trees dry up streams and pollute them with turpentine. An argument being used when the government want to spend money spraying out pine trees but not mentioned when they want to plant them. Funny that! When the trees are felled only 10 per cent of what is left gets bound as carbon in the soil the rest gets released as emissions to the air. That is on top of the thousands of logging trucks clocking up our roads using vast amounts of fossil fuels in the process. To think that this is good for the environment is like the emperor’s new clothes! Lone Sorensen

Council’s take on climate change? Marlborough has now been listed as one of the four hottest regions in NZ due to climate change. The Mayor stated recently that he takes the environment very seriously and yet wherever I go I see more trees being felled to make way for ever increasing vineyards that have helped to heat up the Marlborough region, by reducing rainfall and increasing humidity, not to mention the dust due to increased winds. How will the mayor manage the harvesting of the MDC pine forests when the time comes to fell them? Will it just be clear

felled, as normal with stumps left everywhere and no road buffer zones, or will he choose to have them selectively felled as in Canada and Japan and help retain their carbon while new trees grow? Then there is the problem of recycling waste. To date all we have seen is a few recycle bins in Picton, but the old rubbish bins remain. When are the council going to do away with these non recyclable bins? Likewise, at the airport and MDC camp grounds, so much more could be accomplished. Lets’ at least try. one on one with the Sun

Family, fun and flying Mark O’Sullivan finds himself in the fortunate position of being able to combine his two passions, family and flying. The Marlborough aviation fanatic talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about how he caught the aviation bug, his purchase of a Yak-3, and how his late father influenced his passion. Marlborough’s Mark O’Sullivan admits between family and flying, there is not much time for anything else in his life at present. The 40-year-old purchased a Yak-3 known as Steadfast with friend Ronan Harvey and the pair are preparing their new aircraft for its debut at Warbirds Over Wanaka in April. “This aircraft made its debut at our Marlborough Classic Fighters event in 2007 and was mighty impressive then. “It’s a real crowd pleaser and quite the show-stopper especially with the smoke generators on it. “We saw it come on the market in July last year and a few months later the deal was done and we started pulling it apart ready to be shipped to Marlborough.” The Yak-3 was one of the most feared planes in WWII because of its speed and manoeuvrability making it ideal for close-quarter battles. In the early 2000s a decision was made to build brand new Yak-3s based on the original prototype, this time fitted with powerful Pratt and Whitney R-2000 radial engines. The new aircraft were built in Romania and were snapped up by eager Warbird aircraft owners around the world. ‘Steadfast’ was exported to the United States in the mid-2000s, embarking on an illustrious career at the famous Reno Air Races. During that time the aircraft picked up nine world speed and climbing records, including reaching 655km/h over a 3km course in Utah. In 2013 the aircraft moved to Australia where it has been operating until this latest move across the Tasman. Mark says family played a big part in his passion for aviation. His late father, Kevin took him to airshows as a child and while he was not able to fly due to medical reasons, it left a huge impression on Mark. Equally, Mark’s wife Kate is also a supporter of his passion, which he admits makes it easier to find the time

to fly and purchase planes. “I’m extremely lucky that Kate loves it as well and is often just as keen to fly somewhere as I am. “We own a Harvard Cessna 185 six-seater Bush plane and we do a lot of family flying with our two kids, George, 8 and Mila, 6. “A lot of the aviation guys can’t get their partners or wives into a plane so I certainly see myself as one of the lucky ones. “New Zealand is such a great place to aviate so it’s always been part of my plan to get the family involved and also what it takes in terms of preparation and safety for flying. “I’m a mechanic by trade, not in aviation but another field so I have a huge interest in the mechanics of planes but I absolutely love flying. “There are a whole bunch of distractions in life but I’ve never seen anything like flying that totally zones me out and relaxes me. “It’s the best way to relax and detach from the busy nature of life.” Mark says by the time he was 24 he was keen to fly himself and did so at the Marlborough Aero Club.

“It’s a real crowd pleaser and quite the show-stopper.” Mark with son George, 8.

“I just started one day and I have just never stopped. “I started in a Nanchang on 82 hours flying and it’s progressed from there. “One of my instructors once said to me, and I’ll never forget it, you need discipline, skill, attitude and knowledge to be good at this and that’s always stuck with me.” Mark says despite all of the classic planes he has owned or been in, he says his Cessna owns a special place in his heart because of the freedom it

gives his family to travel up and down New Zealand. “No one wants to talk about it with me because it’s just a Cessna but it’s such an all rounder and people are always in it and that creates great memories for me. “It allows us to go to places in this country that appear untouched and when you return to the hangar after a day like that, it’s certainly something I reflect on.”

Mark says he has been motivated to fly by the memory of his late Father, Kevin. “I only learnt four months ago that he took flying lessons in the late 60s at the Marlborough Aero Club so that’ll be some research I’ll have to do soon. “It has spurred me along to think Dad would have loved to fly solo but couldn’t so I’ll get out and do it for him.” Mark says Ronan is the ideal

co-owner of Steadfast. “We are like-minded souls with our approach to things and it’s quite a breath of fresh air for me to be working with someone who has a high level of aviation mechanics,” he says. “I’m sure it’ll be a great partnership with this plane and we feel privileged to have an aircraft like this and bring it to Marlborough for Kiwis to see flying around, it’s a huge thrill for us.”

Picton Maritime Festival a sunny success Friday and Saturday saw thousands of Marlburians flock to the Picton Foreshore for a two day extravaganga of sun, sand, and fun. They were there for the Picton Maritime Festival - an event that is held annually and celebrates Marlborough’s unique maritime heritage. This year, the event celebrated it’s 15 year anniversary. From raft-building contests to games of tug-of-war; bouncy

castles to arts and crafts; and multiple performance by local and professional talent to food and drink carts, the festival offered all kinds of entertainment and activities for those who went along. All funds raised at the event will be distributed back into the community, specifically supporting local initiatives that directly benefit children and families. Photos by Aimee O’Hagan.

This is an extremely valuable service to the clients in need of informal respite care, but there is a growing demand and more volunteers are being sought. Field worker Catherine Donnelly says more volunteers are needed and currently there are people on a waiting list for relief carers. “It’s a very rewarding role as

a volunteer and there is free training provided. Relief carers provide an invaluable service by allowing a disabled person to remain in their home so the primary carer can have a break and time to themselves. “It’s a 24 hour, seven day a week job that can often isolate the carer, so providing them with support makes a huge difference to their lives,” Catherine says. Rising from the ashes Dry Cleaning business re-opens - new building, new name March 1, 2018 – it’s a date Dave Poole will never forget. The alarm call from his Queen Street premises, Blenheim Dry Cleaning, came through at 1.30am. “At first I thought it was another false alarm,” Dave says. He had previously been called out when a young intruder broke through a skylight on the building. But as Dave drove down Redwood Street that fateful morning, he saw the glow in the sky as he approached town, and soon realised it was serious – the business he had spent 11 years building was going up in flames. “It was well ablaze by the time I got there,” Dave says. “You could see the glow in the sky from Horton Park in Redwood Street.” The combined resources of the various Marlborough fire brigades were gathered to fight the blaze, assisted by Fire Command from Nelson. “There was no way of saving the building,” Dave says. The fire fighters, some of whom had fought the Farmers Department Store fire in central Blenheim in 1973, were intent on making sure the blaze didn’t spread and rip through more of the CBD. Their efforts paid off, but Dave’s business was reduced to ruins. “It was devastating,” Dave says. “That shop had been a dry cleaning business since 1945.” And Dave had put his heart and soul into it since leaving Marlborough Laundry in 2007. The ensuing months were tough for Dave and his wife, Lisa, as they experienced a

roller-coaster of emotions and struggled to decide what to do. Protracted negotiations with the insurance company added to the stress until a settlement was finally reached 15 months after the fire. Fire investigators had quickly pin-pointed the cause. “It was a faulty three-phase electrical wire in the celling that sparked the blaze,” Dave says. “We were lucky it happened when it did. If we had all been in the shop at the time, the first thing we might have known was when the ceiling caved in. There could have been a fatality.” But Dave and Lisa were also heartened by the response from loyal customers and the Blenheim community. “There was a flood of flowers, food and people coming to wish us well. We were overwhelmed,” Dave says. Support from Master Valet in Nelson and the Picton Laundry enabled Dave to continue to service his regular customers. “Our van was our mobile shop for 20 months,” Dave says. “But we did it to meet our clients’ needs.” But good things were to come. Chris Godsiff, formerly from the Marlborough Tour Company, had talked to Dave about setting up a commercial laundry to service the Marlborough hospitality industry. The idea took off. A project manager showed them the former Auto Care building in Freswick Street and the seed of a new business was sown. Chris and Sue Godsiff and Gary and Helen Pauley, who had also been with the Marlborough Tour Company, joined Dave and Lisa as shareholders and directors in the new venture

– Everyday Best – a new commercial laundry and drycleaners equipped with state-of-the-art technology. “We couldn’t have done it on our own,” Dave says. “But now we’ve got a team with a complete set of skills to help run the business. “And we’ve got two of our staff who were with us in Queen Street back, Ange Millan and Sheryl Smith.” Supervisor Laura Hughes, Tracey Pickering, Jo Sinclair and Anan Srisuk complete the Everyday Best team, and Dave and Lisa are thrilled with the way they have gelled. “We’ll be able to offer the same level of quality and service as we did previously,” Dave says. “We’ve already had a wonderful response with people coming through the door and saying: ‘Welcome back!’” Dave and Lisa are also grateful for the support and skills of builder Dave Norton, electrician Russell Greer and Steve Handisides from Majestic Plumbing who were all intimately involved in the planning and fit-out of the new premises. And there was another special moment: when the building was finished, former Blenheim Nativity Anglican Church Vicar and retired Bishop of Nelson, Richard Ellena, came to officially bless it. The new business will be officially opened with a breakfast barbecue from 7am on Wednesday, January 29. “Come and have a look,” Dave says. “We’ll be more than happy to show you around. “This is a community asset. It will be around a lot longer than I will!”

New technology and increased capacity sets Everyday Best apart The new Freswick Street Everyday Best laundry and drycleaning business is the only one of its kind in the Marlborough region, says proud operator Dave Poole. “We now have a fully operational commercial laundry based in Blenheim supplying rental linen to the Marlborough Hospitality industry,” Dave says. “And we also have the same day laundry and drycleaning service, with the emphasis on

quality and service that our customers have come to expect.” At the heart of the business are a host of new machines imported from overseas, incorporating the latest in drycleaning and laundry technology. Dave, a Marvel Comics fan, has given some of the new machines nicknames. “Our big, new drycleaner is called Phoenix,” Dave says, “because we’re risen again from the ashes!”

The machine uses new hydrocarbon cleaning technology, as opposed to the old perk solvent-based technology which is now being phased out around the world. “It’s more environmentally friendly and can clean a greater range of fabrics,” Dave says. “It’s a green machine, and the only one of its type in the Topof-the-South.” There is also a new washing machine which can handle loads

Photographic screenprinting workshop By Celeste Alexander

Blenheim artist, Jean Loomis, at home in her art studio. Jean will be holding a two-day photographic screenprinting workshop in March.

Blenheim a r tist, Jean Loomis, had her first experience with photographic screen printing when living in Australia in 1982. Her husband was working on his PHD in Adelaide so for the year, Jean made it her goal to learn more about the art form. “I happened to come across a group of women who were funded by the South Australian Arts Council to teach other women photographic art printing. “I spent one year in a garage learning it and I owe a lot to that,” she says. Prior to that she learned to use the screen printing process during the 60s when working a holiday job with an industrial screen printing company which made tourist items, such as printed beach

towels. That was where she learned the fundamentals of screen printing and over the years, her art and skills have adapted with new techniques. It’s these skills which will be shared during a two-day workshop which is being held as part of the Marlborough Art Society’s 2020 Summer Workshop series. Jean is one of three who will be sharing their different art skills. Her workshop is titled ‘Screen Printing’ and has around 15 spaces for people who are interested in learning the photographic process. “Today most screen prints are produced using a photographic process,” Jean explains. “This process enables you to create a stencil using a drawing or photograph which is then photocopied onto clear plastic.

“The stencil is placed onto the screen which has been coated with a light sensitive emulsion. The screen and stencil are then exposed using a UV light and the image developed with water,” she says. Participants will bring their own selection of strong contrast black and white drawings plus some black and white photographs. As part of the workshop they will receive their own screen and squeegee and will have produced around five of their own prints. All workshops will be held in the Marlborough Yealands Estate Gallery Studio. To register for the Screen Printing workshop with Jean Loomis, contact Helen Ballinger on 021 0267 8711 or email workshops@ marlboroughartsociety.co.nz

Hilarious ‘Heroes’ coming to Havelock Town Hall By Aimee O’Hagan

Fancy a chance to enjoy some wonderful theatre performed by local thespians? In two weeks, a rehearsed reading of an exciting new comedy named ‘Heroes’ is set to be performed at Havelock Town Hall in Havelock. Directed by Peter Miekle, Heroes is a play set on the outside terrace of the expansive Convent Gardens for Retired Military Men, in France, August 1959. It’s an English adaptation of the original French play, ‘The Wind in The Poplars’, and is centred around three veterans who are patients at this particular institution – Gustave (played by Greg Bettjeman), who is agoraphobic; Philippe (John Leary), who is prone to collapsing as a result of shrapnel being embedded in his head; and Henri (Ian Cameron), who has a lame leg.

Together, the trio devise a plan to escape from the retired soldiers’ home, having had enough of “the tortures of their confinement: dictatorial captors, untrustworthy fellow prisoners, and far too many birthday parties”. Throughout this process of hatching an escape scheme – which, at the very least, consists of them going for a picnic on a nearby hill – the men “enter into verbal duels”, come up with conspiracy theories, tell tall tales, and grumble about Sister Madeleine, who runs the institution, and fellow inmates. According to Ian, he instantly thought Heroes would be good fun to perform as soon as he read the script. “[I] still enjoy the wit and farcical action,” Ian says. “Over the weeks of rehearsal, Peter’s direction has helped me appreciate and admire the mixture

of humour and pathos as the three elderly veterans realise their limitations. “We are very excited by this departure from our normal fare.” Peter describes the play as “something quite unique” and Greg says that Heroes is “a very beautiful play with layers”. In John’s opinion, all three leads have learned a great deal from Peter. He is confident the play will go well and has really “loved and enjoyed the experience”. Heroes will be staged for two days only, with a night performance on Saturday February 1, from 8pm until 10pm, and a matinee on Sunday February 2, from 4pm until 6pm. Tickets for the play are only $10, and can be purchased from Still Books in Blenheim, Bow to Stern in Havelock, Take Note in Picton, and Foresters Cafe in Rai Valley.

Wednesday

In today’s modern age youth and technology seem to go hand in hand, whether it’s for educational purposes or fun. But according to researchers, children who spend a portion of their day on ‘screen time’, staring at the LED screens of cellphones, computers and other digital devices, this screen time could be causing problems for their eyes and vision. Children who spend multiple hours staring at digital devices are at risk of developing vision-related problems such as digital eye strain, tired eyes, headaches, fatigue and near-sightedness. Encourage frequent visual breaks One of the best things you can do to reduce your child’s risk of digital eye strain is to get them to follow the “20-20-20” rule: Every 20 minutes, take your eyes off your screen and look at something that’s at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This simple task relaxes the focusing and eye alignment muscles, reducing the risk of many of the symptoms of digital eye strain. The 20-20-20 rule also might decrease the risk of myopia progression. Some research suggests focusing fatigue may be associated with the onset and worsening of myopia. Taking frequent breaks from staring at digital

screens helps reduce this fatigue. One of the best ways to help your child to avoid these problems is to establish media-free times each day, and set limits for how long they can be on a device at a time. It’s also recommended that children do not use devices prior to bedtime. If you have any concerns, or just for good practise, schedule annual eye exams. A good time is prior to the start of every school year. Children and technology are the future, however taking simple measures can help to ensure your tech-savvy child can see clearly and comfortably for years to come.

Stress - the root of many issues Stress can be felt by all ages but if you are experiencing ongoing stress from your work, family life or other commitments, then now might be the time to take charge and make 2020 a more enjoyable and less stressful year. What some people may not realise is that stress symptoms may be affecting your health. It’s easy to blame those nagging headaches, frequent insomnia or decreased productivity at work on illness, however it actually could be stress that’s causing it. Stress can affect your body, thoughts, feelings and even your behaviour. If you can recognise the common stress symptoms, then you will be on the path towards managing them better. If you don’t, stress that’s left unchecked can contribute to many health problems

such as heart disease, obesity and high blood pressure. For example; a common effect of stress can cause headaches within your body, anxiety within your mood and over/undereating within your behaviour. Fatigue can lead to a feeling of being overwhelmed, a change in your sex drive can lead to social withdrawal; there are numerous effects caused by stress that can have a flow-on effect within yourself. Take action to manage your stress. Regular physical activity, relaxation techniques, time spent with family and friends, making time for hobbies, getting plenty of sleep and eating a healthy, balanced diet can all help. If you have concerns that stress has had a physical or mental effect on you, visit your GP or a professional counsellor/therapist.

Healthline, Pharmacists, GP or GP Practice Nurse, and Urgent After Hours GP offer professional health advice. If you arrive at Wairau Hospital’s Emergency Department with a non-urgent health concern you may be referred to your GP.

With its grassy runways, wide open spaces, world class restoration projects on classic aircraft, and one-of-a-kind aeroplanes, it’s a buzzing community. With facilities like this, it’s no surprise that a small town like Blenheim has individuals from all over the globe coming to check out its heritage. For Classic Aero Machinery Service’s Tony Wytenburg, the Omaka Aerodrome location is essential to his aircraft restoration work. Yak 3 races in America

Chief pilot of Fighter Flights, Graeme Frew, and Jay McIntyre of JEM Aviation, have taken a restored Yak 3 Russian World War II bomber across the world for the last two years. The Yak 3, which is typically used for scenic joy rides was taken apart, shipped to the Reno Championship Air Race in America, and pieced back together in an open-air pit there for the public to see. “It was known as a Yak in a Box,” pilot Graeme laughs. Jay, Graeme and their team were the first New Zealand team to enter the competition. “Americans were blown away with what we were doing. “We might have even taught them a few things,” Jay says. Last year, they went back for another go and had great success. They even got on the local news.

“It was great, we were really promoting Marlborough and our destination. It really raised the profile,” Graeme says. The Yak 3 was imported to Marlborough in 2004, was restored, and began its first flights in 2012 and has been flying ever since. “Every time I fly I always see around 30 people having a look,” Graeme says. The Yak 3 scenic flights offer a view of Marlborough you wouldn’t usually get to experience, especially at top speeds of 500 kilometres per hour. Omaka holds a soft spot for Graeme because it was the place he did his first flying lessons. For Jay, Omaka has been the home of JEM Aviation since 2006. “Omaka is a real communi- Pilot Graeme ty of people doing what they Limited beforeFrew and chief engineer Jay McIntyre from JEM Aviation they take the restored Russian WWII bomber Yak3 love,” Jay says. out for a spin. 100 years of racing action at Waterlea Photos by Aimee O’Hagan

Horses and humans alike gathered at Waterlea Racecourse on Friday and Sunday for two busy days of harness racing. They were there for the annual summer trotting meeting, but this year’s event was extra special: the club was celebrating 100 years of harness racing at Marlborough’s Waterlea Racecourse. Horses, jockeys, trainers and breeders from all around New Zealand went along to participate in the races.
