Ted’s jump By Celeste Alexander

Sanfords general manager of aquaculture, Ted Culley, is no stranger to heights and certainly isn’t afraid to put his body on the line for a good cause. Ted is one of 26 people who have

signed up to jump out of a plane for the Graeme Dingle Foundation’s Drop for Youth Marlborough fundraiser set for February 22. While the other ‘daring troopers’ are jumping 9000ft, Ted is taking it a giant step further by jumping at 20,000ft. Continued on page 2.

Continued from page 2. As part of his 20,000ft jump, Ted has also challenged himself to raise $20,000 and lose 12kg of weight. After many conversations with contacts throughout New Zealand and overseas, he’s managed to exceed $24,000 in donations and has also lost 18kg. “I was 12kg over the limit for the 20,000ft jump so I decided through a bit of painful discipline that I’d aim for that; but I’m down 18kg now. “Plus I’ve had 87 sponsors… that’s a lot of conversations. Some of the sponsors hadn’t heard about the Foundation but they know how crazy I am so they feel obligated to put money in,” he laughs. Ted’s connection to the Graeme Dingle Foundation goes back a number of years when Sanfords first got involved back in 2002. Ted was invited to join in with some kids during a Kiwi Can lesson and since then, he admits he was “converted to the cause”. “The feedback from the Kiwi Can programme has highlighted how it’s improved young people’s behaviour and respect and generally encouraging children to do the right thing. what you are looking for in staff; someone that thinks of other people and are not just out for themselves. “Marlborough was one of the last areas that got into it but the area manager, Kelvin Watt, has done an extremely good job of getting the coverage here and signing up local schools to the programme,” he says. The idea to skydive and fundraise came when the ‘Drop Your Boss’ was introduced, where Ted took part in the first year and raised $14,000. When at a presentation for Project K, a 14 month long programme designed by the Foundation for teenagers, one of the prizes a student received was a parachute jump. “I said to Kelvin, we have to do this! The next Drop Your Boss we did and I think I raised around $19,500, hence why my target was $20,000 this year,” he says. Aside from jumping and fundraising Ted has also sponsored children from Havelock School to skydive as part of a letter writing project where they explain how the Kiwi Can programme had impacted on them. “Last year a daughter of one of the guys working for me in the factory got to do it; she got a big buzz out of that,” he says.

There are 26 local people including teachers, a journalist, a funeral director, people from the viticulture and aquaculture industries and others from the community, who are jumping out of a plane next month in the name of charity. They just need your support to reach their fundraising goals. Photo provided.

With the day of the jump nearing, Ted is asked how he’s feeling ahead of his 20,000ft drop. “From my experience the hardest bit is getting off the seat and going to the plane’s door to jump… it’s the hardest metre I’ve moved in my life,” he jokes. “Nobody can hear you screaming as you free fall apart from the guy on your back. “It’s not for everyone; people can either do it or they’re horrified by the idea. It’s a bit like seafood… you either love it or hate it. It’s a similar

disposition,” he says. Anyone wanting to support Drop for Youth Marlborough, Ted invites you to visit the Givealittle page and support the other participants who are currently fundraising. The goal is for each person to raise $1000 in order to enable them to jump. “Please go online and support these people,” Ted says. “They have put themselves out there to fundraise for a fantastic cause.” Visit https://givealittle.co.nz/event/ dyf-marlborough.

Renwick residents urged to conserve water Renwick residents are being strongly encouraged to conserve water. Council’s Operations and Maintenance Engineer Stephen Rooney says with a period of hot weather predicted and no rain forecast, locals are encouraged to begin conserving water now. “Residents are asked to restrict irrigation use during the heat of the day and from 6pm to 9pm to avoid significant reductions in the reservoir’s capacity. Reduced capacity has an

impact on the water available for firefighting and other emergencies,” Stephen said. “There are a range of steps people can take to conserve water including fixing leaking or dripping taps, taking short showers, and washing clothes and dishes on a full load. “Over the past few summers Renwick residents have done a great job in voluntarily reducing their water use. If these habits continue we may

be able to avoid imposed restrictions this summer,” Stephen said. Council is investing just over $10 million over three years in long-term water management infrastructure for Renwick. “As well as construction of the new reservoir, we’re completing new wells at Conders Bend, installing the pipeline from the wells to the new water treatment plant, and constructing the treatment plant.”

“Once this programme is complete, Renwick will have a safe and secure supply that meets the national drinking water standards,” Stephen said. “Until then, please reduce your water consumption over the summer months.” Please don’t: • Wash vehicles • Fill swimming pools • Clean driveways and outdoor areas with a hose.

Sarah shears way into world record By Celeste Alexander

It’s back to reality for local shearing contractor, Sarah Higgins, who returned home at the weekend after making history as part of a four-woman team which sheared its way into the record books. After nine hours of shearing Sarah and the team set a new world record last Thursday after they shore 2066 Romney lambs. Sarah (27), who is originally from Havelock was part of the four-strong team of women who set a World four-stand women’s nine hours strongwool lambs shearing record at Waihi-Pukawa Station, Turangi. Of the 2066, Sarah shore 528. She says she was pleased after exceeding her initial target. “I knew I’d be doing well if I could shear 500 so I was happy to get over that.” Asked how she was feeling during and after the event, she says it was a feeling of “relief”. “It’s a bit hard to describe to be honest. We had all been working hard and looking forward to it for six months; so it was a big feeling of relief that we had accomplished the goal we set,” she says. “But on the day it was good and we all had our families there supporting us. The temperature in the shed wasn’t too hot… perfect for what we were doing.” Of the four women Sarah was one of the most well-known for being a regular on the competition circuit, including her previous achievements in 2015 when she became the first person to win Golden Shears titles in

Over 7000 students set for school In Marlborough it’s projected that 701 new entrants will embark on their first day of school in the 2020 school year, and around 7159 years 1-13 students will take to their classrooms over the coming weeks. Education Minister, Chris Hipkins, says the year will begin on a positive for families who will “feel less of a financial pinch than in previous years”. “Our school donations scheme is just one of a number of Wellbeing Budget initiatives that will make a real difference in the coming year. “This year parents won’t face the prospect of fees for NCEA and Scholarship exams, and 623 new Learning Support Coordinators will be starting in schools nationwide this year.

both woolhandling and shearing, adding the Novice shearing title to the Junior woolhandling title she won two years earlier. The World Record attempt involved the women shearing the standard nine-hour day in five runs. The runs were 5am-7am, 8am-9.45am, 10.15am-midday, 1pm-2.45pm and then 3.15pm5pm. Sarah, owner of Higgins Shearing Ltd, shore 528 lambs while other members of the teams, Megan Whitehead (Gore) shore

608, Natalya Rangiawha (Raglan) 507 and Amy Silcock (Wairarapa) finished with 423. Their dream target was 2000 which they easily passed and according to chief referee, Martyn David from Wales, despite the huge amount of energy used throughout the day the quality “got better and better all day”. Organiser Jill Angus Burney, who in 1989 shore a solo nine hour record of 541, was overwhelmed by the support for a record that cost about $15,000

to stage. There was no previous record, but starting at 5am, they were always on pace to hit the dream target of 2000 which was passed in the last quarter hour to knockoff at 5pm. Sarah’s official count for each of the five runs is as follows: 120, 105, 98, 98, and 106 = 528. Asked what the next challenge is, Sarah says it will be Golden Shears in March followed by her wedding in April to fiancé Ben Hewson.

A public notice has been sent out to local schools concerning Coronavirus ahead of children and young people returning to classrooms for the 2020 school year. Any students or staff members who may be at high risk of exposure due to recent visits to China, or have been in close contact with someone confirmed with the virus, they are encouraged to delay the start of their school year for 14 days and voluntarily stay away.

Who would have thought that a trip to Lochmara would result in Blenheim couple, Allan and Pauline Reddecliffe, winning a prize worth $20,000? In October last year, Allan found out that his snap of friends Doug Irving, David Jones, and Jack Curtis looking for reception at Lochmara Lodge had been deemed the winner of a national photography competition run by the Probus Active Retirees magazine. According to Pauline, the exciting news was imparted to them via email. “When they emailed us, Allan was in the garden,” she says of the day the two found out. “I had to read it three times before it sunk in and I could tell him.” “She came out [to tell me] and she was all shakey,” Allan says with a laugh. “I was bloody amazed.” In Allan and Pauline’s opinion, it was the photograph’s entertaining caption – ‘3 wise men looking for reception’ – that made it stand out from the other photos, which were entered by other Probus Club members and retirement home residents from around New Zealand. Allan’s amazing prize will see the couple go on a 12 night cruise abroad the Aranui 5, which will take them around the Marquesas Islands, including Bora Bora, Tahiti and others. Excitingly, the couple will also get to stay four nights at a resort in Papeete. Having gone on the exact same trip before, the two are delighted to be returning to the islands. Both are looking forward to immersing themselves in the life of locals and buying presents for the stars of Allan’s winning photograph – Doug, David, and Jack.

Welcoming crowd wowed by Tauihu sculpture By student reporter Frances Chin

Street lights glowed as people waited in anticipation for the first glimpse of the Tauihu last Friday before dawn. Through a damp mist the veiled sculpture loomed over the crowd. Rangitāne trustee, Jeremy Tātere MacLeod, invited people to gather around the sculpture as he performed a karakia before the veil was pulled to reveal the magnificent Tauihu. The huge sculpture drew gasps of awe. Made of bronze and steel, the Tauihu exists as a physical representation of the Wairau’s Māori history. On the prow of the waka figures of past ancestors are displayed, alongside designs representing features of the Wairau. In the darkness of the early morning, the Tauihu was a sight to behold. Green and blue lights cast a watery glow along the bottom, making the sculpture seem like it was rising from ocean waves. The crowd was invited to touch the Tauihu before the sun rose in order to transfer their mana into the bronze and steel.

Viveyan Tuhimata, Karena Martin and Ricky Earr of Te Piki Oranga Maori Wellness Service attended in support of the Tauihu unveiling/blessing last Friday morning.

A crowd of around 100 people turned out for the 4am unveiling, and afterwards each were invited to touch the Tauihu to transfer their mana.

Even more spectacular during the day, the Tauihu sculpture has been attracting plenty of The Tauihu is made of bronze and steel and is over 4m interest since its unveiling last Friday. It sits outside the Blenheim Railway Station. tall, and will be illuminated at night.

Furthermore, he states last years capital spend was the council’s second highest, and I would ask how many extra staff have been added to the payroll since he took over as CEO, and in particular last year?

And finally, I have yet to see a consolidated set of accounts - as stated - showing how the profit from the MDC subsidiaries fit in with the council’s yearly spend and or future capital spend items, and neither had the mayor when asked to produce them last October at the meet the councillors and mayoral candidates. In the MDC CEO response to my letter dated the 22/1, he clearly states that the rate increase over the next eight years will be approximately 50% - he actually said less than which equates to around to 49% - therefore we can now expect an annual average rate increase of between 4.4 - 4.5%, thereby more than confirming my suggested 4% annual increment.

Thank you for your honesty. He also was proud to admit that 75% of ratepayers were happy with the MDC services, which while may be correct, it didn’t say that 75% of rate payers were happy with the constant overall annual rate increase, a question not asked! which equate to twice the annual CPI. Grant Stubbs pumped for life after petrol Grant Stubbs, the friendly familiar face of independent petrol stations in Blenheim for 28 years, thinks retirement suits him. He talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about his emotions of moving on to life after Caltex, why the time was right and the importance of all relationships. Grant Stubbs believes he is just as comfortable under the bonnet of a car in his home garage as he was being the face of Caltex in Blenheim for 28 years. “It’s a relief, the service station game is getting very competitive and yet New Zealand’s use of fuel is tracking down as of last year,” he says. “The advent of fuel efficient cars and electric cars was always going to happen. “There’s all these fuel discounters coming into the South Island market and yet it is a diminishing market. “I brought my first station at the Guyton’s site opposite the railway station in 1991. “Up until four or five years ago the industry was stable - we wouldn’t have a price change in two months and we’d all be a similar price. “Now you have lean and mean price discounters with stand alone sites and minimal staff so the time was right for me in an aggressively changing market.

“It was heartbreaking, we’d sunk our life savings into it but we were one of many victims.” “I was the only independent fuel retailer in Blenheim and I could see if I stuck around I was in trouble. “The reality is I’m tired and I didn’t have the energy to go on with the next phase.” Grant says after beginning his working life as a mechanic in 1978 at the Grove Road Services site, he jumped at the chance to buy the petrol station which was attached to it, 13 years later. Grant ran the garage side of the business and his wife ran the petrol station on the site until 2008, when petrol company, Caltex did not renew the lease on the tanks.

“At that point there was a big divestment in petrol stations around the country and we were a victim of that. “It was heartbreaking, we’d sunk our life savings into it but we were one of the many victims. “Fortunately, I was able to buy the site on Main Street pretty quickly and move a lot of stock which minimised the losses and we got stuck in again. Grant says relationships have been the key to a successful business life. “Relationships make it all happen and not just with customers but also my staff. “We all had our friends, family and fans and in a small community that personal service counts for a lot. “If you got that right and your price was pretty competitive then people would stay with you. “I guess I’m a bit of a dinosaur with thoughts like that but it’s what has worked for me. “I’m a natural introvert, I’m speaking from my home workshop at the moment. “Retail is different, it’s constant interaction and it was fine and of course there was no workshop for us on Main Street so I guess I had no place to hide.” Grant says the shopkeeper aspect became a big part of business for the past 15 years. “Back in the day there was very little in the shop.” “Cigarettes, a few bags of chips and a pie warmer in the corner was all you needed and the rest of your shelves were full of car-related products, oil etc. “Service stations have become the dairy that used to be on the corner of every street 30 years ago. “I was the only petrol station left in town that didn’t have a barista making the coffee. “Convenience is everything now, back in the day we’d wipe windscreens, check oil and water, tyre pressure but now people want to fill up, grab it and go. “The quality of the interaction isn’t there.

“You have to trust your staff and pay them as much as you can afford, not necessarily how much you can get away with.” Staff is another key part of the longevity. “Happy staff are engaged staff. “You don’t want to stand over them like a boss, but instead work alongside them as a colleague.” Grant says he does not believe he left the industry fully on his terms. “There hasn’t been a lot of acknowledgement from (Caltex) for the time served so yes that bothers me but I wasn’t expecting it, that’s the industry we are in these days. “M ixed a mongst the feeling of relief is the satisfaction that we did the best we could for 28 years and provided a service to Blenheim.” He says retired life is something he has quickly become used too. “This was my first Christmas and New Year off because I always worked through the stat days. “We have a lifestyle block here on the edge of Blenheim and an Air B’n’B setup, plus my son is setting up his own plumbing business. But really my wife and I are just enjoying some quiet time to be honest. “I’m in no hurry to get back to work - I’m very happy here in my shed.”

Kids amazed by shark teeth By student reporter Frances Chin

Last Friday Marlborough’s youngest got their first brush with archaeology. Marlborough Museum’s Natural History Week ended on a high note with their ‘Meet an Archaeologist’ Workshop, aimed at ages seven and under. The workshop was run by Heritage Trust Regional Collections Manager and Archaeologist Logan Coote. Logan did his Master’s degree on D’Urville Island, which, while interesting to him, would be “very boring for anyone who doesn’t get excited by copper mines and argillite quarries.” Logan began the workshop by explaining what an

archaeologist was, and what they do. While the children were initially disappointed with the surprising lack of dinosaurs involved, this soon turned to excitement they (and guardians) were invited to handle artefacts excavated by archaeologists. These included Pakohe (argillite) tools found in the Wairau Bar, and a huge Moa bone. However, the star attraction was a megalodon Tooth, owned by Logan himself. Children were given a sharks tooth and a Megalodon tooth to see the size difference. Spoiler alert: the megalodon tooth was a bit bigger. The children were then taken outside to practice

excavating. Using tools such as trowels and brushes, in sand buckets the children excavated plastic eyeballs, dinosaur toys, and obsidian chips. The Wairau bar is one of the oldest sites of settlement in New Zealand, with artefacts found dating back 700/800 years. This workshop celebrating Marlborough’s deep history was the perfect way to end the Marlborough Museum’s Natural History week. And who knows? Only 20percent of the Wairau Bar has been excavated. Thanks to Logan and the Marlborough Museum, maybe the children who attended their workshop will be the ones who explore the rest.

Chase Franken was excited to see a megalo- Rawhai Poipoi and Ariana Poipoi holding a don tooth up close. megalodon tooth.

Hayley triumphs at inaugural ‘Havelock’s Got Talent’ contest By Aimee O’Hagan

Saturday night was an exciting evening for a collection of Marlburians, all of whom were given an opportunity to shine and show off their talents for an enthusiastic audience. They were competing in Havelock’s Got Talent; the first ever talent quest to be held in the small, rural town. Despite the event – which sold out with a full house – being dominated by great singers and skillful guitar players, it also featured a mysterious story-teller and one very comical poet. For Havelock local, Hayley Mortimer-Jones, the night was a particularly big success. Not only did the singer take out the people’s choice award, but she also won first place. Linkwater teen, Tom Clerke, came second, and Havelock resident, Hans Neilson, placed third. When asked about how she felt about her win, Hayley says, “Surprised!” “I didn’t get a lot of practise in beforehand,” she laughs. “I participated as a present for Mum on her birthday, and it was a very last minute decision.” As the winner of the competition, Hayley was rewarded with $150 cash and a free scenic helicopter ride for four with Marlborough Helicopters. “I’m going to take Mum, Dad, and my partner with me on the helicopter ride,” Hayley says. As well as this, she was granted a meal voucher for two at Slip Inn Cafe, Havelock, for winning the people’s choice award. Second place winner, Tom, was rewarded with a $50 cash prize and a night for two in the Kingfisher Suite at The Lodge at Te Rawa, which is set to include a continental breakfast and return transfers via the Marlborough Tour Company.

Winners of Havelock’s Got Talent first place, Hayley Mortimer-Jones (left); second place, Tom Clerke; and third place, Hans Neilson celebrate their success.

Jocee Tuck sang a beautiful number for ‘anyone who loves someone’. Shalom Del’Monte Aberhart

Hans’ prize for winning third overall was a family pass to the Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival 2020 and an additional $50 cash prize. “The committee were delighted

with the calibre of the artists, the number of entries we received, and the generosity of our sponsors,” says Havelock Theatre committee secretary, Ian Cameron.

Steve and Deb Turnbull were the only group to perform at the event

“We were extremely fortunate to have our judges, Con O’Brien, Samantha Baxter and Ross Sinclair, and have received good comments about their judging since.

“Havelock Theatre is definitely keen to make this an annual event!” For more photos from the event, see The Sun’s Out & About section on page 14.

You breed ‘em, we treat ‘em Early detection and treatment of pests is always better than treating an infestation, say Kevin and Michelle Gunn, owners of The Spiderman, Marlborough. The Spiderman has been providing professional pest control to local residents for more than 20 years. With Kevin being a registered Master Pest Control technician and Michelle supporting him in her human resources role, the couple have continued to deliver “exemplary pest control services to new and existing clients, right across the region. This season has seen The Spiderman busy with a steady increase in ant and cockroach infestations, including calls from clients to treat significantly large infestations in homes and businesses. The most common ant species treated have been the common black house ant and the little brown Darwin ants. While tiny in size, they pose a nuisance with thousands of dollars of food products being thrown away by homeowners each season, so early intervention is key, Kevin says. “Early detection and treatment of pests is always better than treating an infestation. It means less cost to treat, less sprays and faster results. “Generally if you have issues so does your neighbour; you should consider speaking to neighbours about pests and you may have and work together to eradicate them from

Bug-off mosquitoes For most, mosquitoes are the insect God should have left in the scrap bin. Even the mention of these blood-suckers sends most into furtive scratching fits. Captain Cook came up with the term ‘sandflies’ to describe the species of insect that plagued him and his crew upon their first arrival to Aotearoa. Called ‘waeroa’ in Te Reo, we have 16 different species of mosquito in New Zealand. Twelve are endemic (native), and four are introduced.

Of the four introduced species, three can be found in Marlborough; Striped, Brown-House, and Southern Salt-marsh. These mozzies are attracted to Marlborough’s sunny skies and marshy wet-lands. How to deter mosquitoes has been a question long asked by New Zealanders. The Maori used to cover their skin with fish oil and the crushed leaves of the Ngaio Tree to keep the mosquitoes away. Prime Minister Richard Seddon (Prime Minister of New Zealand

from 1893 until his death)had to smear himself in a mixture of lard and camphor oil in order to stop the mozzies of Haast Pass biting him during a trip there. Nowadays, scientists know more about deterring these vampire insects. Female mosquitoes breed in still water. So, to discourage mosquitos around your property it’s a good idea to clean out your gutters and water tank. Otherwise a call to your local friendly pest controller could be a good option. your home and boundaries. “We have responded to a number of ant infestations including multiple individual nest sites and in some cases, larger ant colonies found in gardens, sheds, garages and the walls and ceilings of homes and businesses. “We have followed one trailing black house ant infestation which travelled through three properties in Springlands before we lost sight of the ants. Ants are fascinatingly organised and can travel over a wide area to achieve the objectives of the colony’s queen or multiple queens. “We are also finding large

cockroach infestations in new build homes. This is not something proud new homeowners would expect, however we have noticed an increase in cockroach activity in new build developments and some clients are now choosing to treat their new homes before moving in,” he says. The Spiderman is here to help you achieve a bug free home, office, work space, commercial premises and everything in between. Contact Michelle and Kevin for advice and services. Success for croquet players

inbrief

By Aimee O’Hagan

Marlborough Golf Club

The beautiful weather on Saturday morning made for perfect conditions for the Blenheim Croquet Club’s annual golf croquet tournament. A group of 24 players from Blenheim, Christchurch, Riwaka, and Richmond gathered at the club to participate in the

competition. In the end, it was Blenheim Croquet Club members Stan and Moira Paul who won the tournament, with Graham Dawson and Jean Zaludek coming in second. Organisers would like to say a big thank you to First National Marlborough for sponsoring the tournament and the prizes for the winners.

Queen Charlotte Yacht Club – another step closer This last weekend was reason for both celebration and reliving happy memories for the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, as it was the last Saturday racing with briefing held in the old boatshed. Racing was outside with a stiff 15 to 20 knots northerly breeze. Beautiful conditions made for great racing except staying dry

was not an option. The fleet of Optimists, Topaz, Open Skiffs, Splash, 420, Laser, Paper Tiger, Finn and a Nacra sailed three races before returning to Shelley Beach. After racing boats were moved into the new boatshed, which is part of the new club, still under construction. On Sunday QCYC volunteers

turned up to dismantle the old boatshed. It will be a while longer before the New QCYC water sport facility is fully operational, but it will be worth it and it will enhance all the great things already happening in Picton, a spokesperson says. It has been a busy month for QCYC sailors. Several have attended regatta’s and National events all

over the country. From February 1-5 QCYC will host the Zephyr Nationals. A few weeks after that around 175 sailors will descend on Picton to take part in the 2020 Interislander Optimist and Port Marlborough Starling Champs at QCYC. QCYC sailors will also attend several regattas in March and April.
