Century old education Continued from page 1. The past seems closer than ever in the fever-ward turned 19th Century classroom. Chalk boards, slates, and canes fill the room, reminding us of a far off land before Fortnite and iPhones, when children played with hoops and rods, and wore bonnets and caps to school. The day is a highlight for many, giving people a chance to experience what life was like over a century ago. Despite the excitement in his classroom, John has never had any trouble with his students. “I find because I’m a different face and that the aim of our programme is to be hands on—kids are dressing up and touching old things so they are

excited and passionate.” The Heritage Education Programme has developed over 60 different programmes over the years. John has taken his students to see the world’s ninth oldest wooden ship ‘the Edwin Fox.’ He has also taken them to the aviation museum, whaling stations, and Captain Cook sites. John has even helped them look for gold. “We take them to Wakamarina Goldfield,” John says. “We teach them how to pan and sluice for gold.” However, this is John’s last year as a full-time member of Heritage Education Marlborough. He will be moving into a part-time role to focus on some personal historical projects. What will he miss the most? “My

favourite part is taking children to historical sites,” John says. “And interacting with young people, it’s always been a lot of fun.” While technology may change, naughty children stay the same. John knows his classroom so well he can match century old graffiti to its perpetrator. Pointing at a set of initials inside a wooden desk, he explains that the engraved initials, BHSS, stands for Bertha Helena Stace Stace, born 1881. Bertha died at 100 years of age in 1981. But if you look at her scrawled initials, you can see a young girl, carving her name into her desk in a moment of boredom. Bertha is not the only hoodlum caught red-handed. One gentleman

named Ferg Murray, while attending the programme with a family member, recognised his own initials carved into a desk. Luckily, over 50 years later, he wasn’t punished for defacing school property. Marlborough Heritage Day will take place at Brayshaw Park. Lasting from 10am to 4pm, there will be a variety of activities such as; model boats, stamp collections, and a dress up competition. There will also be demonstrations of skills such as blacksmithing, woodwork, and chaff cutting. The Riverside Railway will be running all day. Entry will be $5 for adults, and free for children.

Te Pataka Night Market sets a festive scene for Waitangi commemorations After four hugely successful markets, Te Pātaka o Wairau Māori Night Market is back on Wednesday, February 5 from 4-8pm at Seymour Square. What better way to commemorate the first signing of Te Tiriti ō Waitangi and celebrate all things Te Ao Māori, than with your whānau in the surrounds of Seymour Square in Blenheim. This event is designed to showcase Māori businesses and products, and with a stage of Māori entertainers including kapa haka groups. Te Pātaka host for the evening is talented Kahutane Whaanga. He will be accompanied by a range of local entertainers, including kapa haka groups

from Queen Charlotte College, Marlborough Boys’ College, Marlborough Girls’ College, Te Rerenga o Te Rā and Te Moutere Tawhito o Wairau along with some fabulous soloists, setting the scene for a warm whānau atmosphere. Spokesperson, Dr Lorr Eade, says, ‘Te Pātaka provides a platform for emerging Māori businesses to introduce their products. “We are excited to have some new stallholders, including a hairdresser, harakeke products, beautician, greeting cards and for the first time a number of rangatahi have established and are running their own stalls. “This is on top of our tried and

true stallholders from previous markets, tā moko, toi Māori and other amazing products and kai. “The interest and support shown by attendance at the markets has continued to grow in strength. “We are always inspired by the smiles on the faces of people and the positive feedback we get (some even suggesting we do this monthly!). “Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Rārua and Rangitāne thank everyone for their ongoing support to this event, especially our sponsors the Rātā Foundation, Ministry of Culture and Heritage, Te Puni Kōkiri, Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu and the Marlborough District Council for the February event.”

Funding announced

Yealands, Council and Sun Newspaper partner to launch sustainability initiative By Celeste Alexander

Yealands Wines announced today that it has partnered with the Marlborough District Council and the Blenheim Sun Newspaper to launch a new sustainability initiative, offering $100,000 annual grants to local groups committed to improving the region’s environment. The Yealands Wines Marlborough Sustainability Initiative (YSI) offers a total of $100,000 each year to local environmental not-for-profits working to improve fresh water quality, preserve sensitive natural areas, and protect biodiversity. The opportunity to provide resources to improve the local Marlborough region was a natural expansion of Yealands’ existing commitment to sustainable winemaking. As New Zealand’s only Toitu carbonzero accredited winery, Yealands has consistently committed itself to producing high-quality wines in the most sustainable way. Most recently, Yealands has joined the member list of International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA), a collective that unites winemakers in a mission to decarbonise the global wine industry. As part of this membership, Yealands has committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2045. Michael Wentworth, general manager external relations and sustainability at Yealands Wines, is gratified that Yealands can add this initiative to its growing list of sustainability commitments. “Marlborough’s environment

Plastics destined for landfill More plastics will be sent into Marlborough landfill, as items such as coffee lids and takeaway cups are now non-recyclable. Due to China no longer accepting a number of plastics, about 15 percent of plastics processed in Marlborough has no recycling pathway and must be sent to landfill.

Gas station goes into liquidation The Challenge Station will be auctioning off its assets, after being put into liquidation on December 28, 2019. The auction starts this Saturday at 11am, with viewings opening at 9am. Everything in the store and garage attached must be sold.

and its people come together to produce Yealands Wines. Given our connection to the environment, we recognise that we have a role to play to protect it and support those people in our community who work so hard on environmental causes, he says. Sun Newspaper publishers, Les and Katrina Whiteside, say they are thrilled to be involved with this community initiative, while Marl-

borough Mayor, John Leggett, says he’s “pleased” that the council can help support their valuable work on the ground. “There are many deserving environmental projects here in Marlborough, run by passionate and inspiring locals. Thank you to Yealands Wine Group for setting up this fund, which I’m sure will be appreciated by many in our community,” he says.

Applications for the YSI grants will be open twice a year. Each charitable or not-for-profit community group can apply for individual grants of up to $10,000 each year. The first applications are now open and will close on February 29. For further information on the initiative, application details, and terms and conditions, please visit https://yealands.co.nz/marlborough-sustainability-initiative.

The un-named 27-year-old man who shot his friend in the leg has pled guilty to using a firearm to cause death or bodily injury. The two men had known each other for years. They have worked together, and hunted together regularly. The accident happened when the rifle was loaded then suddenly discharged, shooting the man’s friend through the rifle case. The bullet penetrated the man’s upper thigh, shattered his femur, and damaged his artery and pelvis. He is now recovering in Hutt Hosiptal. The 27-year-old’s lawyer says the case is appropriate for restorative justice, and asks that a conviction not be entered.

‘The King and I’ off to theatrical start By Aimee O’Hagan

In May, Blenheim Musical Theatre is set to stage one of the most beloved musicals of all time. They’ll be performing ‘The King and I’, a musical written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, and based on the book ‘Anna and the King of Siam’ by Margaret Landon. The play tells the ‘moving’ story of Anna Leonowens, a British governess to the court of Siam (now Thailand) in the 1860s, who undertakes the position as the schoolteacher of the royal offspring of Mongkut, the King of Siam. Struggling to resist the forces of ancient customs and traditions, King Mongkut takes on Anna as his advisor to help modernise his country. Throughout their time with each other, the two learn about understanding and respect; creating a bond that brings two very different cultures together. “The King and I has a good, strong storyline and [contains] some of the best music written by Richard Rodgers,” says director, Duncan

Whiting. “It’s a musical that has lasted some 70 odd years. “The story itself is based on actual fact... There’s a lot of historical background to the King and I, but I think there’s two things that [really] make this musical: it’s the East meets the West – that’s important to the story line – and the big friendship that comes through between the King and Anna.” “This is a musical that is a classic,” says production manager, Neville Patchett. “The story is really through the ages – it’s the same as what is happening in the world today.” After playing the principal role of the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera last year, Spencer Kingi will be returning to bring King Mongkut to life. Aria Bakker will be playing the role of Anna after portraying Christine in Phantom of the Opera, and Samantha Baxter is set to play the character of Lady Thiang, following last year’s role of Carlotta. “In these three performers, the audience is really going to get more

than their money’s worth,” Duncan says. Secondary principals include Jed Cornelius as Anna’s son, Louis; Luka Van Rensburg as Prince Chulalongkorn; Peata Panaho as Tuptim; Daniel Diamond as Luntha; and Peter Miekle as the Kralahome. Although rehearsals have just begun, there is already an “enormous effort” being put in behind

the scenes. “Another [important] aspect of King and I is the visual aspects,” Duncan explains. “For that, the society is building a complete wardrobe for the production. “This is a big challenge which a whole group of dedicated ladies is now getting underway with.” According to Duncan and Neville, BMT is constructing a

completely new stage set for the production – which again, Duncan says, is set to involve a lot of man power and people. “Audiences can eventually expect a large orchestra in the pit led by Richard Ellena, which will be made up of Marlborough’s best players. “It’s a total community production which we hope the community will appreciate and come to see!”

children, a sausage sizzle raising money for Grovetown School, and much more on offer for those who come along. Dogs are welcome, as long as they are on leads. According to vounteer coordinator for Grovetown Lagoon clean-up group, Wetland Warriors, Rosanne Anderson, the lagoon is a “lovely” and “very special” spot. “It’s a very important feature in Marlborough,” she says. “A remnant of the wetland that used to be there. “It’s a little area that many people don’t really know about – even people who’ve lived in Marlborough all their lives – so we’re working on improving accessibility to the lagoon and letting people know it’s there.”

Volunteer coordinator for the Wetland Warriors, Rosanne Anderson, says people should come along to the walk on Sunday for the chance to get some good exercise and enjoy the beautiful spot that is Grovetown Lagoon. Photo Supplied

Wheelie bins on the move

Renwick residents urged to conserve water

The red and yellow litter bins located in Blenheim and Picton will soon be moved to some of Marlborough’s rural towns. Solid Waste Manager Alec McNeil says the wheelie bins have been trialled in Blenheim and Picton for the past 18 months as part of the national ‘Litter Less Recycle More’ project. “With only six months left until the trial concludes, we want to find out whether there is a need for the bins in some of our smaller towns,” Alec said. The wheelie bins will be on the move from Monday 3 February. Servicing of the remaining litter bins for Picton and Blenheim will be adjusted to take account of

Renwick residents are strongly encouraged to conserve water. Operations and Maintenance Engineer Stephen Rooney says with ongoing hot weather and no rain forecast, locals are encouraged to continue conserving water. “Residents are asked to restrict irrigation use during the heat of the day and from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm to avoid a reduction in the reservoir’s capacity. Reduced capacity has an impact on the water available for firefighting and other emergencies,” Stephen said. “There are a range of steps people can take to conserve water including fixing leaking or dripping taps, taking short showers, and washing clothes and dishes on a full load. “Over the past few summers Renwick residents have done a great job in voluntarily reducing their water use. If these habits continue we may be able to avoid imposed restrictions this summer,” Stephen said. To help people better understand the

the reduction in bins. When the trial concludes in June, Council will review how effective the system has been and whether it should be continued.

It’s easy to blow the budget over the summer holidays. Most of us want to forget about belt-tightening at this time of the year, but that can mean a debt-laden new year. Even if it’s been a costly Christmas, it’s wise to start taking steps now to manage your money. Too many people fall into the trap of putting gifts on credit cards or a store card, which can add dollars to the cost of every purchase. It’s a good idea to always pay mortgage, rent, finance and insurance payments before spending on gifts and

food. If you’re in a tight spot with your finances, Budget Service Marlborough may be able to help. It’s a free service with trained people. Don’t leave it until you’re in real trouble – the sooner you act the better. They can review your household budget and check you’re receiving all your entitlements. You can contact Budget Service Marlborough on Ph: 03 578 2006 or visit them at 25 Alfred Street Blenheim, from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. Appointments at other times can be arranged.

Combined ceremony?

The Sun

Due to the time it’s taking to build the new Opawa road bridge, can we combine the opening ceremony with the heritage listing ceremony to save some ratepayers funds?

talk Whitebait

Stop the sale of whitebait and large sock set nets from the Division. Most motorhomers staying there the whole season sell their bait and most use large sock nets.

Thank you Thank you to the mother and daughter that kept an eye on my chihuahua on Monday when he took off at riverbank and went to Farmers. Then back to my car. I was panicking that he would be run over or worse. Nice to know there is compassionate people out there.

School field So disappointing to see the Fairhall school playing field desecrated so mummy darlings can feel more secure.

A waste Johns kitchen. We have taken bok choy, silverbeet, celery and parsley down there. No they are not open till the 27th but why is it there is always bread and buns sitting in a trolley. Why do the homeless and people that cannot afford bread not take it. So what happens to the bread and buns at the end of the day. We got kids in Blenheim that don’t even have breakfast. What a waste.

Noisy vehicles At 5 am almost every day for weeks my family are being woken by a noisy silver Subaru and a equally noisy white wagon. It doesn’t seem fair that we and our neighbours have to put up with the noise from these vehicles before dawn.

I would like to say a very big thank you to a lady named Stacey who helped out the Saturday of the 22nd Dec 2019 and to St Johns.

Sick of it

Name calling Re defensive riding. Did you need to address the size of the lady. Rudeness much. Perhaps I could address you as small minded idiot!!!

Totally agree with Fulltime Billboard. I drive past it every day and am sick of it too. Wouldn’t buy a house from him.

Marfells Beach As a descendant of Richard and Margaret Marfell I support the proposal to protect the coastline including Marfells Beach. The beach was gifted and authorities have the right to put restrictions in place to protect bird and marine life and the environment. I do not want to see the beach irrevocably damaged as that would devalue the original gift. However, a designated boat launching area should be available.

Plastic shopping bags have been banned to save the dolphins and other wildlife. When are we banning the use of plastic water bottles for the same reason?

Good start BUS STOP@RENWICK. Thanks Council, I’m still waiting for when the bus will come and how often. Good start but taking a while.

Out of touch To RIDICULOUS: No point in arguing with an out of touch person, obviously someone whose lives in this town, never been away to see what’s happening elsewhere.

Take a look Agree with the mess from the recycling centre on the riverbank, come on council take a look!!

Health conscientious. Top marks Pak n Save, for keeping those antiseptic wipes on hand. Someone is looking out for us.

Clean up Watching rubbish collector’s going about the routine of collecting the bags. One burst as he threw into truck, left rubbish on road which he did in first place and this included a sharp knife. Come on rubbish guys you burst the bag clean up road, after all we pay rates to pay your wages. Keep our streets clean.

A little compassion Took my son to A&E Saturday evening with a lacerated foot. He had been swimming and got me to pick him up from the marina. After more than a 3 hour wait with damp clothes in air conditioning, he was feeling chilled, so I asked for a warming blanket. The nurse attending him said “it’s not like he’s 92 & has a heart condition, no, you’ll be going soon”. He was shivering by the time we got in our vehicle. Whilst I appreciate the wonderful job they do at A&E, I feel a little compassion goes a long way.

Information is key to cancer awareness Throughout the year there are awareness events held which highlight a variety of health conditions experienced by people all over the world. The point of these awareness weeks, and days, is to educate people about the impact that these have on our daily lives, and to provide information on how communities can help. One in particular which affects a huge number of people is cancer. Cancer is New Zealand’s single biggest cause of death and most people will have some experience of it, either personally or through a relative or friend. To encourage a global awareness of the impact of cancer, World Cancer Day is recognised on Tuesday, February 4.

The aim of World Cancer Day is to spark conversations and provoke deeper dialogue on the most critical issues in cancer all around the world, and right here in New Zealand. According to the World Cancer Day website, 9.6million people die worldwide every year from cancer. Here in New Zealand the Cancer Society says today, 60 New Zealanders will hear the words “you have cancer”. So how can you help? Show your support for the Cancer Society with their numerous fundraising projects throughout the year or volunteer your time. Marlborough has its own branch located in Blenheim’s CBD, where they provide a number of local services and offer information

and support to people affected by cancer. The Marlborough Cancer Society also holds a number of events and street appeals throughout the year to raise funds which enable them to continue providing their services and programmes to local families. Because they do not receive any government funding donations and grants are vital to their day-to-day operations. If you are someone wanting to support the Marlborough Cancer Society, or are looking for support and information the team is there to help. “And if you want to talk – we are here to listen. “No one should face cancer alone… with Cancer Society here, you won’t have to.”

Finding skin cancer early could save your life Get to know your skin by checking it regularly— particularly if you are over 50, have a family history of skin cancer or have had any bad sunburns as a child. It is recommended that all New Zealanders get into the habit of checking their skin (preferably once every three months) so they can spot skin cancer early when there is a better chance of successful treatment. Ask your friend, use a mirror or ask a relative to look at the parts you can’t see. (If you can’t check your skin, ask your doctor’s practice nurse or the doctor.) It’s easy to check your skin and should only take 15 minutes. Just follow these steps. • Check your whole body—from head to toe, front, back and sides

• Check your head and neck— don’t forget your scalp, ears, face and lips • Check the trunk, front, back and sides • Check your arms and hands, including nails • Check the soles of your feet, between your toes and nails • Check your buttocks and legs. What to look for Look for these things when checking your skin: • Any spot, mole or freckle that has changed in shape, size or colour • A new spot that is different from other spots around it • Any small, dome-shaped lump that wasn’t there before and an outline of a mole that changes or becomes raised • The surface of a mole that has become rough, scaly or has become

an open sore • A mole that itches or tingles • A sore that bleeds, doesn’t heal and/or has become an open sore • A sore that heals and has become an open sore again • Any skin spot that you are worried about. Skin cancers rarely hurt and are more often seen than felt. Develop a regular habit of checking your skin for new spots and changes to existing freckles or moles. Self-examination can find skin cancers in their early stages. Have your skin checked by a doctor immediately if you notice any of the changes described above. The risk of developing skin cancer increases with age, but skin cancer also affects younger people. Get to know your own skin and talk to your doctor at the first sign of any change.

Skin cancer awareness clinics The Cancer Society Marlborough is once again holding its annual skin cancer awareness clinics. These will be held in Blenheim and Picton to provide a forum for local people to detect early signs of skin cancer and provide the chance for early intervention. In Blenheim, it will be held on Friday, February 28. The Picton clinic will be held on Wednesday, March 4. Skin specialists and GP’s from Marlborough, Wellington and

Nelson are invited to support these clinics. Anyone can come along between 3pm - 7pm, no appointments necessary, and wait to see a specialist or GP. People are checked and referred for urgent treatment by a consultant or urged to follow up with their GP as appropriate. The clinics are free to the community, open to anyone, however we do ask for a donation to contribute to our running costs. The clinics are more than just a chance to diagnose skin problems, they also provide

the opportunity to educate and inform. Details: Blenheim - Friday 28th February, 2pm - 7pm at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Picton - Wednesday 4th March, 3pm - 7pm at the Picton School Hall (entrance at 25 York Street). We look forward to welcoming you to our Skin Awareness Clinic. The Sun Newspaper will be running a series of reader giveaways throughout the year, so keep an eye out on what goodies will be on offer next.

Goodbye grandstand It’s a sad time for those who recall sitting in the large concrete and timber grandstand at Blenheim’s A&P Park, as demolition works got underway this week. However it also brings excitement amongst those who regularly use the park, including Marlborough Football, who will benefit from a

new and safer facility being built. The Marlborough District Council has budgeted $180,000 to demolish the 1920s building after past earthquakes caused concern about its structural integrity. Prior to the decision being made to demolish the building, there were calls for the grandstand to be

preserved, however conditions were set down to protect and preserve areas within the park. A MDC spokesperson confirmed that a budget allocation for a new facility at A&P Park is budgeted for year 2021/22 at $1.7million. A feasibility study is currently being prepared for the new facility.

This week... A beautiful pair of rose-gold plated earrings to giveaway to one lucky reader. To enter into the draw to win this prize, email your name and contact to celeste@ blenheimsun.co.nz

Fulton Hogan and HEB awarded roading maintenance contract Council has awarded a sevenyear road maintenance and renewal contract jointly to Fulton Hogan and HEB. The Network Outcomes Contract covers all maintenance and renewal works on local roads in Marlborough. Assets and Services Manager Richard Coningham says there’ll be more inspections

and a greater emphasis on fixing potholes and clearing water channels and culverts. “There will also be increased CBD street cleaning and unsealed road and motorcycle route maintenance. Greater emphasis will also be placed on maintaining Marlborough Sounds’ roads.” The contract starts on 1 April 2020.

gardening this week Bringing the past to your plants: By Wally Richards I have written about Humate and Fulvic acid a few times in the past; which I call Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) Recently I have noticed a growing number of gardeners that have been trying the product and finding out the many benefits that happens. Several have told me how their plants and gardens have improved. So for those that are not aware of the MBL benefits let’s review the product. There are many applications that MBL can be used for, some of the most interesting include; Unlocking chemicals in the soil. (If you have been using fertilisers in your garden for some time you will have a lot of fertiliser locked up in the soil.) Drench the soil with

MBL and these unlock and come available to the plants. If you are into growing record breaking vegetables for shows this could be for you. Benefits can include; Aids and speeds up germination of seeds. • Helps to release locked up fertilisers from past applications especially phosphates. Helps increase availability of chemical fertilisers and organic foods for plants. • Helps reduce many common plant disease problems. Helps clean up many toxic compounds, chemicals and oil spills in soil. • Helps to establish plants in areas where they can’t or struggle to establish. Stimulates growth of soil micro organisms. • Increases root respiration

and formation as well as availability of micro nutrients. • Can increase permeability of plant membranes, which will enhance nutrient uptake. Increases vitamin content of plants and improves seed germination. • Accelerates root development. Stimulates plant enzymes and contains a number of trace elements such as Si, Mg, S, Mn and more. • Increases ability to photosynthesis. Contains silica which strengthens cell walls, helps block disease and regulates cell temperature which increases drought and frost tolerance. • Increases pH buffering properties of soil. Retains and releases water soluble

fertilisers for plants when needed. Increases soil aeration. Improves soil structure and makes soil more friable. If you have brown patches on the lawn where dogs have urinated use MBL to help restore or re-establish grass. Use on your flowering annuals for bigger displays and you will need fewer plants to fill beds. Whether you use chemical fertilisers or organic preparations, MBL will give you better results and you need to use far less chemical fertilisers and so saving you money. Put it in your weed killers for better results. Can be mixed as a foliage spray with most garden sprays to advantage. Problems, ring me at 0800 466464.

Gecko features in Pollard Park design

During the summer holidays the Marlborough District Council’s gardening team had the help of some university students during the break. When looking at a new feature planting for the garden located beside the gazebo area at Pollard Park, one of the students came up with the idea of a gecko design. Marlborough District Council gardener, Rachel Hutchinson, says normally the team will pitch in ideas for the design, but with the student’s interest in geckos there was some artistic licence given. “For the green colour we planted pyrethrum, the white and little dots of purple is alyssum, and then the orange is with marigold. The gecko will be in place until March before it comes out for winter planting.

Experience with vintrace software is an advantage in this role but not essential. This is a fixed term role for the vintage period, which will involve 12-hour shifts during the peak of fruit intake.

sports talk With Jacob Page

Mahe v Father Time The Mahe Drysdale single scull circus must end. Two-time Olympic champion Drysdale is one of New Zealand’s most decorated and highly respected sports people in my 25 years watching sport. However, the time has come for him to end his quest to go to one more Olympics solo later this year.

Drysdale failed to qualify for the men’s single scull final at the North Island club championships at Lake Karapiro on Saturday. The 41-year-old seemed to be carrying an injury into the regatta. He was fifth in the second heat, which saw four rowers qualify for Sunday’s final. His time of seven minutes 57.53

seconds was 0.6s off fourth spot. In the interests of transparency, current Kiwi single sculls front runner, Robbie Manson and I went to Marlborough Boys’ College together and I would consider him a personal and professional friend. While Manson has underperformed at major international regattas, he poses a higher medal

probability in the boat than an aging Drysdale who is harming his legacy by not knowing when to call it a day. The cynic in me suggests Drysdale’s inability to gracefully exit may be affecting Manson mentally. Drysdale has nothing left to prove, his Olympic legacy is as cemented as the likes of Mark

Todd, Valerie Adams, Peter Snell and Jack Lovelock. Those are some lofty names to be in the company of when it comes to Olympic feats. Manson deserves a shot and the sporting public deserves to remember Mahe Drysdale for the supreme athlete he was, not this 2020 shell of a rower we are witnessing now.

George wins Hipkins Cup for second year Conditions were near on perfect for the Hipkins Swim held last Sunday, an annual sea swim event hosted by the Rarangi Surf Lifesaving Club. The sun was out and the wind was light as the swimmers gathered on the stoney shores of Rarangi beach for the start of the race, all wearing the much favoured full length wetsuit apart from one brave soul donning the knee length swim shorts. As they set off at midday in a pack the swimmers quickly spread out in length and width taking whatever line they thought would be best. As the swimmers all made the long journey to the first marker they were forced

back together with swimmers coming from all angles and lines to round the marker and head into Whites Bay. The most challenging thing was the fact the tide was on its way out, with a number of swimmers commenting that they could feel themselves battling the currents. Local man George Glover made it to the sand in first place for the second year in a row with a time of 31.02minutes, slightly slower than last year’s efforts reflecting the tidal changes. George was closely followed in by 15-year-old Oliver Mandeno with 32.16. Following them were two of

Two days of beautiful weather and a high number of entries have concluded another successful golf tournament hosted by the Rarangi Golf Club. The McKendry Honda Summer Spectacular Pairs Nett tournament was held over two days last weekend and attracted 100 entries in the Men’s and Women’s pairs. Convenor, Carla Heppelthwaite, says in the five years that she has been involved this was the highest number of entries she’d seen. “To see this level of entries was very pleasing. We had 25 women’s pairs, the best number we’ve had in years, and 75 men’s pairs; plus the course was in excellent condition so overall it was a very successful tournament,” she says. Unfortunately for the previous winners looking to add to their lucky streak, the top of the leaderboard featured some new names with Di McCarthy and Rete Kydd winning the women’s pairs (with 211), and John Billingsley and Sam Rainbird

winning the men’s (with 194). “They were all first-time winners,” Carla says. “Our previous back-to-back winners, Lyn Brice and Sue Lang, missed out on their third win this year and instead managed fourth place and were only three shots behind first place.” Second place in the Women’s Pairs were Annie Hubert and Maryann Best (212) and in third were Donna Mitchell and Kerianna Scott (213). In the Men’s Graeme Kerri-

gan and Jamie Norton placed second (203) and in third were David Best and Bruce Curgeven (203). Entries came in from as far as Nelson/Motueka, Kaikoura and Christchurch. “We have three men who have been coming from Christchurch for around 20 years, and they team up with local players,” Carla says. “It shows the appeal that this tournament has to players. We are now looking forward to next year with anticipation.”
