Starting school is an exciting time for young children who are embarking on their first few years at primary level. In the Anderson household with six-year-old twins, Indi

and Ruby, the excitement levels were pretty high on Sunday afternoon. Their bags were ready, books covered and lunches already packed as they counted down the hours until they could see their school friends again. Continued on page 2.

Six year-old twins, Ruby and Indi Anderson, were excited to start their school year on Monday. Do you have an adorable photo of your new entrant son/daughter starting school this year? If so, send it to celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz along with names of those featured in the photograph, and the Sun will publish a selection of them in our next issue.

Double the smiles for school

Indi and Ruby Anderson were all packed, ready and excited for school on Sunday night.

Continued from page 1. The sisters have enjoyed a holiday break filled with adventures with family including camping in the Marlborough Sounds, horse riding and lots of beach time on hot days. But despite all the fun they were having, they were still looking forward to returning to Witherlea School for their second year. “They missed their friends, which is one of the reasons they’re excited to start back at school,” Mum Mandy says. According to Mandy the girls are in separate classes; always have been bar one term when they very first started school late in the year. Being so close and best mates when hanging out at home together, it’s a different

story with their personal interests, which are quite different. “Indi is the artistic and musical one who also loves her writing,” Mandy says. “She does athletics and plays rugby for Central which I coach. Ruby however doesn’t play rugby, but instead is the team’s number one supporter with the water and oranges. “Ruby loves maths and is animal obsessed. She loves nature and is always collecting insects; we regularly have funerals for the dead praying mantes she finds,” Mandy laughs. Aside from their adorable smiles and innocent giggles outside of school the girls attend Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes run by Marcelo Lopes, something they’ve done since they were five-years-old.

When someone is lost, missing and injured in Marlborough, a callout goes out to local Land Search and Rescue (LandSAR) volunteers who respond to assist Police with the search and rescue operations. One of these callouts occurred on Saturday afternoon in response to a lost tramper in the Pelorus River area. The teams gathered at 1.20pm and by 2.27pm a team of five were kitted out, briefed and deployed in the 28 degree heat. The field team consisted of four field team members and one logistical support/containment, LandSAR Marlborough operational tracker and field team leader, operational tracker and field team leader, Kerry Lammas says. Those who took part in the search were Kerry, Dean Boyce, Jason Jones and Mandy Smith; supported by the wider team involving Lew Bright (logistic support/containment), Kimberley Karaitiana (IMT), Julia Eason (IMT), Ron Harris (IMT/AREC) and

Paul Rennie (IMT/AREC). “The Lost person had cell reception and was in contact with IMT so the field team had a rough location and was conducting a sound/line, a process of blowing whistles, along the track,” Kerry says. The ‘lost persons last known point’ (LKP) was reached around 4pm and the tracking team was deployed and found relevant sign. This led them off track and following sign along the pink trap line markers. By now, the team was in deep bush and the lost person could no longer hear whistles or people. The team regrouped and hatched another plan to back-track to where they went off track. The team back at base then radioed with another grid reference and the field team went straight to it, approximately 500m from their current location. This time they conducted a sound/line/sweep in thick bush. The 500m was covered in approximately one hour and the lost person was located, safe and well but thirsty

Criminology to teaching

inbrief

By Frances Chin

Wine and Food Festival this weekend

While her students may know her as ‘Mrs Macdonald,’ Redwoodtown School teacher, Ciara Macdonald, is also known for her work in another educational role. In addition to teaching years 5/6, Ciara is the chair of the Marlborough branch of the New Zealand Education Institute (NZEI). From 1881 and during the past two years especially, the NZEI has been a powerful force of advocacy for teaching staff in New Zealand. Ciara is a passionate educator who loves to teach and interact with her students. However, she was not always aware of her teaching ability. While growing up in Gisborne, Ciara never considered teaching, but instead studied Criminology at Victoria University of Wellington. After graduating, she moved to London for two years with her partner where she worked in corporate. While working in a London office, Ciara knew she was missing something. After returning to New Zealand she decided to do something different. “I wanted to do something I was more passionate about,” Ciara says. “I considered becoming a social worker but I wanted to do something with a more positive impact.” Ciara “has always loved kids,” so she decided to study teaching at a postgraduate level. After finishing her studies, Ciara came to Blenheim with her partner and started teaching at Mayfield School which she “absolutely loved”. After completing her registration and becoming fully qualified, Ciara moved to Redwoodtown School. She feels that “Redwoodtown School is a very special place.” “It’s culturally rich, and I love the focus on creativity and values based learning.” A few years ago Ciara was intro-

The Marlborough Wine and Food Festival will take place this Saturday from 10.30am -6pm. With a varied selection of local delicacies and wines from over 40 different wineries, this day is a must-do for foodies and wine connoisseurs alike. Global reggae phenomenon Katchafire will be performing. Hailing from Hamilton, this band of former “ruff n tumble youths” will be playing reggae “with an R’n’B and funk rub.” Finally, world famous chef and “godfather” of fusion cuisine Peter Gordon will be on stage in the Culinary Pavilion, teaching us all how to cook right.

duced to the NZEI Marlborough secretary at a gathering and decided to get involved. “I grew up in pro-union family,” Ciara says. “The Marlborough branch was very welcoming. They are always excited to have new people get involved.” Initially, Ciara was the representative for new educators, in their first to fifth year. While acting in this role she “immediately felt passionate about it.” “I realised how much I care about looking after educators,” Ciara says. Following this passion, when former chair Dave Patterson stepped down, Ciara was encouraged by peers and mentors

to take the opportunity. Now, in her role as NZEI Marlborough Chairperson, Ciara is not planning on slowing down. Motivational speaker and author Tim Tipene will be coming to Marlborough on February 28 to speak to NZEI members. And while everyone is keen to get back into the classroom, there are still battles to be won. “As much as we’re excited about another year there is still a lot of campaigning to happen, especially for support staff and ECE (early childhood educators). “Pay equity for teaching assistants is still an issue. Support staff are meeting this month to discuss the issue while the gov-

ernment prepares a proposal. “ In addition to this, Early Childhood Educators (ECE) are campaigning for greater pay equality between the private and public early education sectors, she says. “Some preschool staff are paid just over living wage of $21 per hour or less. Preschools may also only have one qualified teacher on duty. “Our biggest goal is to support ECE and support staff,” Ciara says. “And workload and wellbeing are still major issues.” “There are improvements but we still face a lot of challenges.” “Development of a wellbeing framework is an excellent initiative for us.”

Hospital soon to ditch the coal for a more ‘greener’ option By Celeste Alexander

For the last eight years Wairau Hospital has burned an average of 1000 tonnes of coal in its three boilers, however this is set to change thanks to the announcement of funding to future proof the region’s hospital by replacing them with a more ‘greener’ option. The Government is investing around $5million in Wairau

Hospital, although details on how and when capital will be made available are yet to be confirmed. The announcement was welcomed by Nelson Marlborough District Health Board chief executive, Peter Bramley, who says there is “some urgency” to the need to replace Wairau Hospital’s coal-fed boilers. “While we don’t know

exactly what fuel source or system will be best for Wairau Hospital, we can assure the community that it will not be coal-based. “We look forward to a greener future for our hospital,” he says. Of Nelson and Wairau Hospitals, only Wairau’s boilers exclusively use coal. Nelson Hospital uses a combination of landfill gas and coal.

Wairau Hospital's coal fueled boilers will be replaced with a greener option thanks to the announcement of $5mil funding from the Government.

Green light for new commuter bus services Two new Marlborough bus services will begin running on Monday, February 17. The Blenheim to Renwick service and a new Blenheim commuter service will provide Marlburians with greater transport options and complement the existing Blenheim to Picton and Blenheim bus services. The Blenheim to Renwick service will operate from Monday to Saturday, and will run four daily circuits on weekdays - one early morning, one mid-morning, one mid-afternoon and one early-evening. It will also run two circuits on a Saturday - one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon.

The service will begin and end at the Seymour Street Countdown and will include multiple stops in both directions including Springlands Countdown, Pak’nSave, the Marlborough Airport and Woodbourne. Fares for this service will be $3 for adults and $1.50 for school-aged children. Children under five-years travel for free. SuperGold card holders can travel for free during off-peak hours in the mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Wairau-Awatere Ward Councillor Cynthia Brooks says it’s great news, especially for Renwick residents and for Blenheim commuters wishing to take the bus rather than drive to work. The Blenheim to Renwick

bus service will also provide people from Blenheim with the opportunity to pop out to Renwick for a few hours for coffee or lunch, or hire a bike to cycle around the many cellar doors in the area,” she said. “Council took on-board lots of feedback from the public, who suggested routes and travel times. I think we have found a good solution that meets the needs of our community and our growing population,” Cynthia says. The new Blenheim commuter service will operate Monday to Friday and will provide two simultaneous services to Southern Blenheim. The morning services will depart at 7.30 am and 8.00 am. The evening

FREE FUEL FREE FREE FUEL FUEL

services depart at 5.15 pm and 5.45 pm. These services will depart from and return to the Countdown Seymour Street bus stop and each circuit will take around 23 minutes to complete. The West route will travel along Maxwell Road, Taylor Pass Road, Forest Park Drive, Hillcrest Avenue, Wither Road and Howick Road. The East route will travel along Stephenson Street, Houldsworth Street, Muller Road, Redwood Street, Wither Road and Weld Street. The fares for this service are $2 for adults and $1 for school-aged children. Children under five years will travel for free.

Both services will be operated by Ritchies Transport Holdings Ltd through a variation to the Blenheim Bus Service contract. Cynthia says people need to support the new services. “The new bus services are an 18-month trial. Through the public survey we ran last year, I know many residents are passionate about improving public transport in Marlborough. If the new services are supported by the public, they are much more likely to continue for the long term.” The timetables and locations of bus stops for the new services will be posted on the Council website by Wednesday, February 12.

Public calls for the Marlborough District Council have prompted an investigation into rabbit control options along the Taylor River.

Rabbit population causing concern Rabbits have been the hot topic of discussions among Blenheim residents in recent times, but it hasn’t been about their cute-factor or potential to taste delicious in a pie. It’s been about the high number seen in areas along the Taylor River Reserve. Public calls to the Marlborough District Council have prompted an investigation into rabbit control options along the Taylor River. The Council has fielded calls from residents con-

cerned about the number of rabbits they are seeing around Blenheim. A Council spokesperson says the Biosecurity and Parks teams are currently looking at options to control the numbers and are in discussions with neighbouring property owners. “We have already successfully carried out some night shooting through a Police-approved and permitted operator. “Public areas like this can

be challenging. Control work takes careful planning to ensure that there is no risk to the public.” The Council is the management agency for the Regional Pest Management Plan which has a programme for feral rabbit control, a recognised pest under the Biosecurity Act. Under the Plan, property owners are responsible for pest control on their own land. This allows the Council to control pests on the land it owns or manages.

Harleen Apperley is saying goodbye to staff and friends at Aberleigh Village after 11 years.

New plans for retiree By Frances Chin

Harleen Apperley talks about her life between giggles. “I was a postie,” she says. “In wind, rain, or shine, I would deliver the Kaikoura post.” “It’s all different now days,” she says. “You have machines to do it.” Harleen ‘Harley’ Apperley has lived at Aberleigh Village for 11 years, and at 80 years of age, is still going strong. Her nickname at Aberleigh is “Double-Trouble,” due to her infectious laugh and her tendency to fall out of bed. Sadly, after calling Aberleigh Village home for so long, Harleen will be moving on to Redwood Rest Home and Village. Harleen grew up in Kaikoura, with her parents and her

two brothers. Her mother was a seamstress, and her father was a mechanic. As a young woman Harleen worked as a postie, before moving with her husband to Blenheim in 1969. Harleen worked in a lingerie factory, until she fell pregnant with her first child. Blenheim has changed greatly during Harleen’s time here. “There are a lot of new shops, it looks very different.” Harleen’s husband, John, was a staple at St Mary’s Catholic Church, working there for 38 years. “John used to ring the church bell, until the doctor told him to give it up as it was affecting his spine.” Harleen is an active member of the Marlborough Stroke

Club, and attends the friendship group. She loves to have a laugh with her friends there, and to celebrate members’ birthdays at the bamboo garden. Harleen is sad to be moving on from Aberleigh Village, but is excited for a change of scene. A lover of good food, she is looking forward to Redwood’s “amazing pork-belly, with chocolate cake for desert,” and the friends she will make there. Harleen wants to give a big thanks to the team at Aberleigh Village for looking after her, and a special thank you to her doctors, Doctor Bird and Doctor Hassan, and to the staff at Aberleigh Village. “Thank you very much for putting up with me!”

The Big Spend

Dear Madam & Sir, I finally struck a programme I really, really enjoy—on Choice, “Jack Irish,” a who-done-what that puts the weak, childish dreck that constitutes Jack Reacher, NCIS etc. in its proper place. Took a lot of finding though.

Had time to read the big spend up, I notice that the majority is to be spent on transport infrastructure mainly in the North Island with Auckland getting the lions share. Some monies to schools and hospitals. At the last election this government promised to build hundreds of affordable houses with Kiwi Build, this has never happened.

Good on yer, Aussies! Don’t fancy the new “Alone” much, don’t see the point of putting the poor hopefuls in such a totally hostile place, where they can’t really exercise initiative. Yours faithfully, Bill Holvey

Bex Nafe Blenheim My family. Life has its ups and downs, but family’s always there.

With an ever increasing list of people needing housing and the government bringing in hundreds of refugee families and housing them {and good on them for that}, there was no mention of a housing program to ease that growing problem we have with the homeless New Zealanders, and the list is getting longer. KIWI

MDC and environment Dear Ed In this day and age of growing environmental awareness you’d expect the Marlborough District Council to be a shining example. But at Shep’s Park in Severne Street was the notice warning of glyphosate i.e. Roundup herbicide being used. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) (World Health Organisation) labels glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen. “Roundup not only has the potential to jeopardise human health, but it also poses a risk to livestock, wildlife and ecosystems in the areas surrounding where the weed killer is sprayed” says Green

Planet. The coverup by corporates allaying fears about the herbicide, using compliant scientists has been well documented. Read the book “Whitewash” by Carey Gillam, Research Director for the consumer group US Right to Know Now in the election campaign, two Awatere/Wairau ward councillors lauded climate change and the need for an emergency declaration. “Any denier is dumb,” said one. Would those councillors label the use of Roundup in public parks as not only “dumb” but dangerous too? Don Coyote

Playground upgrades awaiting approval Council’s Assets and Services Committee has agreed to fund improvements to four playgrounds. Westwood Reserve, Ballinger Park and Mark Smith Reserve in Blenheim, plus Victoria Domain in Picton, are all in line for an upgrade. Following a request from locals, Ballinger Park is set to get a new flying fox, and at Mark Smith Reserve a new pathway will be constructed along its northern boundary to better connect to the Taylor River tracks. The Westwood Reserve playground has been in the pipeline since the development of the sub-

division in 2016. Over the past few months Council staff have been working with community representatives on a suitable playground design. The new playground will feature a landslide platform, climbing wall, fireman’s pole and a timber-framed swing. The playground will also include a shade shelter, soft fall safety matting and seating made from existing concrete blocks. In Picton, the Victoria Domain playground will be redeveloped so that it is more accessible to children of all needs. A basket swing and new safety matting will

Clooney and Zogg are best mates and are patiently awaiting a new home together.

Best mates looking for a home By Celeste Alexander

Two bachelors just hanging out together watching the world go by. It sounds like the beginning of a man-flick. Well, it kind of is; except the feline version. The SPCA Marlborough centre is home to two male adult cats, Zogg and Clooney. They were rescues who are looking for a new home - together! Centre manager, Donna Sologar, says the two are bonded and spend most of their time side-by-side. She would love to see them both find a new home and staff have been featuring them regularly on social media, to no avail. “We just don’t know why noone has taken them home yet,”

she says. “They’re such lovely cats who just need a quiet home without any children so they can let their personalities come through. “Zogg came from a not very nice situation where he was living with lots of other cats, so he gets anxious when he’s not with cats. He’s made a lovely friend in Clooney and we would love to see them adopted together,” she says. Because centre staff want to see them adopted together, they’re offering a two-for-one adoption price. The adoption fee covers desexing, microchip, vaccination and flea/worming. Call in and visit Zogg and Clooney at the centre or phone the staff for more information.

be installed. Deputy Mayor Nadine Taylor, Chair of the Assets and Services Committee, says the funding for the upgrades was allocated at the Land Subdivision Account meeting in August last year and covers capital improvements. “These upgrades are really great news for families and children across Marlborough and follow the opening of new playground facilities at Pollard Park, Renwick Domain and Mark Smith Reserve last year.” The committee decision is subject to Council approval on February 27.

Mark Smith Reserve in Blenheim is one of four playgrounds which could soon receive upgrades.

one on one with the Sun

Happily trapped in a passion for birds Dianne John has turned her interest in birds into 18 years of encouraging their existence and growth with her actions at Ngakuta Bay. She talks to Sun reporter, Jacob Page about her interest becoming an obsession, what a Sunday drive did to enhance it, and why Ngakuta Bay is a place she never wants to leave. ”We moved to New Zealand in 1976, first to Palmerston North and then in 2001 we came to Marlborough. Originally from Edinburgh, a job offer for her husband got them both to New Zealand. “It was by luck that we came here as it wasn’t really on our radar but we thank our lucky stars that we did.” After several months of renting, it was a Sunday drive which took Dianne’s life to Ngakuta Bay, about 10 minutes outside Picton. “Seven months into renting in Blenheim we went for a Sunday drive and we thought ’wow, wouldn’t it be nice to live here?’ “We wanted to buy so it worked out well.

“I have to weigh up what I want and the tui and bellbirds win hands-down.” “This is remote enough with Picton still accessible, yet we live surrounded by the bush and the beach and in the winter we have 45 to 50 permanent residents and even some of them are away.” Dianne says she always had an interest in birds from a young age but

it was never a hobby. “I’d look at them in books or on the TV but it wasn’t until our kids were older that I started to take the odd photo. “When we came to Marlborough we joined Forest and Bird and through that we joined what is now Birds New Zealand. “That’s when my interest became a passion and if you ask my kids, my obsession.” Dianne says she would love more urban people to get involved. “There’s so much talk about sanctuaries and forest trapping and, apart from Wellington, no area is making it an urban issue. “There is an organisation called Squawk Squad, which is a crowd-funding group which raises money for self-resetting traps and your name is attached to a trap in a sanctuary and then people who fund it find out what that trap has caught while they are drinking their lattes and they can feel like they’ve done something to help. “I was involved in starting Picton Dawn Chorus and as a spin-off of that I thought I could do my own trapping.” After the Department of Conservation and local iwi were happy, the trapping expanded with the passion of others. “From humble beginnings we have nine trap lines which is about 160 traps out and working.

“I’ve always been aware of what is in my garden or around me when I’m walking but now it’s been other people who are noticing the amount of birds about,” she says. “I used to get excited to see a juvenile bird and now that’s a regular occurrence and that’s down to the trapping.” She says being able to help in a hands-on capacity, has enhanced her enjoyment. “Through Birds New Zealand I’ve had several incredible experiences. “I had three summers, a month at a time, on the Chatham Islands helping the albatross form a new colony. “I did the same with the Hutton’s shearwater at Kaikoura.

“I’ve also been up to Great Barrier and Little Barrier Island working with the black petrel birds.” It has not all been about birds though. “I also worked with the Stephens Island frogs. “I was a physio but I had a very understanding boss that allowed me to do the volunteer work. “Some people go for holidays, but I’d rather be doing something.” Dianne says she gets no joy out of killing rats. “I have to weigh up what I want and the tui and bellbirds win hands-down. “It’s not the rats’ fault, we brought them here, but it’s not something I enjoy.” Dianne admits even with her

work, it remains an uphill battle to convince the masses. “We must get more people to connect with the environment that we are all part of. “Until society accepts that we are all connected, it will be a challenge to see mass change.” Dianne says she has no interest in ever leaving Ngakuta Bay. “I want to be taken out in a box, I never want to leave here and the kids say we can’t sell the house as they’d like it for a holiday home. “If everybody does their bit, we can make a predator free New Zealand. “We have 12 people of our 45-strong community regularly checking traps and that’s great. “The reward is that you get to hear and see the birds.”

Sand, sea, and fun at Beach Fest Friday evening was an exciting night for hundreds of Marlborough youth, who gathered at the Picton Foreshore to attend Beach Fest 2020. The event, which is held annually by the Marlborough Youth Trust, offered multiple activities for the teens who came along: from live DJs and entertainment to food and drink vendors, to a volleyball tournament, inflatables, and

even the chance to get their hair braided by a professional! The aim of MYT, when planning Beach Fest, was to hold one last party before the youth return to college or university and once again get stuck into their studies. Upcoming events for MYT include an ‘Into The Wild’ adventure course and Youth Week. Photos by Aimee O’Hagan.

EDUCATION Learn to drive If you are teaching a young person to drive, get yourself well prepared with the nifty free learn-to-drive website drive.govt.nz, and smartphone app DriveGo. The road rules and the way we teach driving skills have probably changed quite a bit since you learned to drive, and that’s where the learn-to-drive website and app comes in handy. Loaded with coaching guides, free lessons and resources, drive.govt.nz and DriveGo have been designed to make teaching someone to drive less stressful, and help young people become confident, safe drivers. Often parents and caregivers worry they are passing on bad habits or advice that is past its use-by-date, but the online learn-to-drive tools give you the confidence that you are passing on accurate information. The website and app were also designed to help young people become safe, skilled and capable drivers, so it’s well worth sitting down with your young charge and checking out all the lessons and tips and tricks together, to ensure you’re both making the most of this helpful resource. Also check out the AA’s Supervised Practice Checklist for loads of helpful information and guidance to get you started on becoming a great driving practice supervisor. You may even consider booking a refresher driving lesson with a professional driving

instructor to ensure you’re on the right track, before you start helping your learner driver. Download Drive Go for free from the app store on your iPhone, or Google Play on Android.

Or go to drive.govt.nz/ for tons of information and to check out the other interactive tools available for young learner drivers and their coaches. PBA.

The Marlborough region welcomes 701 new entrants for the 2020 school year. The total number of students enrolled in primary and secondary schools will be 7,159. After two years of industrial action, teachers have ensured that these new entrants will be entering an educational system that is different from past years. Part of this change is the introduction of the Government Donation Scheme. Under the Government Donation Scheme, $62.5 million in additional government funding will be funnelled into New Zealand schools. Schools that opt in to the scheme will be paid $150 per student, with this payment being supplied as a lump sum included in schools’

January 2020 Operational Funding Instalment. Education Minister Chris Hipkins welcomes new entrants, and hopes the government donations scheme will make things easier on the whole for both parents and staff with the upcoming academic year. “We know how difficult it can be for parents to afford the donations that schools request. Our scheme will take significant financial pressure off many kiwi families. Just over 90percent of Decile 1-7 schools in the Marlborough/Tasman/West Coast area have opted in to the Government’s donation scheme, with $2,909,700 worth of funding being given.

Improved access to Mapp Track A new mountain bike cattle stop and pedestrian gate were “officially” opened last Wednesday by Peter Blackmore from the Marlborough Mountain Bike Club, and Linda Le Sueur from the Marlborough Tramping Club. The two had some fun while marking the occasion with the cutting of ribbon at the stop and the gate. The structure is located at the top of Redwood Rise, providing improved access

‘Insanely fast’ racing from Modifieds By Celeste Alexander

The overcast conditions of Saturday evening provided just enough relief from the 30+ degree heat for the large crowd which turned out for Eastern States Speedway meeting. The crowd knew it would be a good one with the top feature being the Broadbridge Transport South Island Modified Champs. But the excitement really took hold when the first rumbles of these V8 powered, winged monsters were felt through the ground beneath the crowd’s feet. From Greymouth, Christchurch and Stratford, 10 drivers descended upon ESS for an insanely fast night of championship racing. It was a real treat for local speedway fans that don’t often get to see the Modifieds in action. Two very excited ladies sitting beside me declared that the Modifieds were among their favourite of classes. Asked why one replied; “I love anything that runs on methanol!” And just to prove how sharp the driver must be and how fast things can go south, Kevin Ban’s 49c had a collision on the first corner which threw him straight into the wall. Seemingly uninjured, Kevin was towed off for the race to continue. But it’s time like these that spectators can get an understanding of how important roll cages and safety harnesses are, and how they can mean all the difference between a driver walking away or heading to the ambulance. Another hairy moment was during race two when Atama Holland (48GM) and Stephen Sinclair (82c) made contact. But thanks to some quick thinking and expert handling they were able to avoid disaster and straighten up to continue racing. By the end of the night it was Steve Thompson (54GM) who topped in points with two firsts and a fifth placing, becoming the new South Island champ followed by Stephen Sinclair (82c) and Ralph Godwin (99c). Kicking off the night’s programme

Blenheim's own Mini Sprint driver, Nigel Jackson. Nigel is registered to Christchurch due to there not being a Mini Sprint class at Eastern States Speedway. SpeedNut Photography

was the Black Stag Build Group Modified Sprint & Mini Sprint Champs which was dominated early by Christchurch driver, Kieran Harris. In second was Darryl Scott (8i) and third was Brent Hayston (29c). What the local crowd might not have known is that we had Nigel Jackson (81c) and Brent Hayston (29c) who are actually locals but because ESS doesn’t run Mini Sprints, they races in Christchurch. The stockcars were another class which put on a show for the evening in the second round of the Stop Family Violence Stockcar Battle of the Vines. Returning to the track was Taylor Forbes who was out for a number of weeks due to a broken arm. Another driver being welcomed back was Jamie Boulton in the 851e car. This class saw a couple of spills but not so many hits during the night, but instead showcased more of their speed and handling. In the first race the top three places were fought over by Tim Alexander (77e), Leighton Stanton (57e) and Scott Alexander (59e).

The second of the races was won by Scott and the third by Jack Rarity (416e). The total points for the Battle of the Vines saw Tim sit in first place, Scott in second and Brandon Schumacher in third. The Precision Tyre & Auto Streetcar Series second round produced three different winners from each of the races. Looking out over the field it looked like the battle between the mechanics with three local businesses sponsoring a number of cars, including Mag & Turbo Blenheim, Martin Motors and Precision Tyre & Auto. This non-contact class can still leave a mark on the concrete wall, especially when drivers like Mark Taylor (74) go nose first in and limp off with a destroyed tyre. While Darryl Bunn (47) took the first win, the limelight was quickly stolen by Craig Chapman’s little white Honda Civic (23). For its size and being one of the smallest cars on the track, it put up a great little fight. Unfortunately it couldn’t keep up the pace for the rest of the night, losing the third and final race to Nelson’s Glen Squire (48n).

With one more round to go, Darryl Bun is leading on points with 30, followed by Christine Chapman (61) on 29, and Matthew Vincent (17) on 28. The one class which did take to the track with some tenacity were the Streetstocks. There was no flag chasing that night, but rather a night spent hitting, spinning and sitting on the brakes to hold up the cars behind them. The two Anthony’s, Anthony Gane (4e) and Anthony Clark (48e), kicked the night off with a tussle over positions before (Gane) went on to chase down Sydney Briggs and spin him at the final corner to take the first race win. In the final race Dale Johnson, or Wingy as many know him as, proved that having one arm doesn’t mean you can’t still win the race. To date this season Anthony Gane is leading the points followed closely by Sydney. Next up on the Eastern States Speedway calendar is February 15 with the Streetstocks Pitcrew/ Sponsors Race, Stockcar Best Pairs and the Production Best Pairs.
