Playground upgrades awaiting approval Council’s Assets and Services Committee has agreed to fund improvements to four playgrounds. Westwood Reserve, Ballinger Park and Mark Smith Reserve in Blenheim, plus Victoria Domain in Picton, are all in line for an upgrade. Following a request from locals, Ballinger Park is set to get a new flying fox, and at Mark Smith Reserve a new pathway will be constructed along its northern boundary to better connect to the Taylor River tracks. The Westwood Reserve playground has been in the pipeline since the development of the sub-
division in 2016. Over the past few months Council staff have been working with community representatives on a suitable playground design. The new playground will feature a landslide platform, climbing wall, fireman’s pole and a timber-framed swing. The playground will also include a shade shelter, soft fall safety matting and seating made from existing concrete blocks. Two bachelors just hanging out together watching the world go by. It sounds like the beginning of a man-flick. Well, it kind of is; except the feline version. The SPCA Marlborough centre is home to two male adult cats, Zogg and Clooney. They were rescues who are looking for a new home - together! Centre manager, Donna Sologar, says the two are bonded and spend most of their time side-by-side. She would love to see them both find a new home and staff have been featuring them regularly on social media, to no avail. “We just don’t know why noone has taken them home yet,”
she says. “They’re such lovely cats who just need a quiet home without any children so they can let their personalities come through. “Zogg came from a not very nice situation where he was living with lots of other cats, so he gets anxious when he’s not with cats. He’s made a lovely friend in Clooney and we would love to see them adopted together,” she says. Because centre staff want to see them adopted together, they’re offering a two-for-one adoption price. The adoption fee covers desexing, microchip, vaccination and flea/worming. Call in and visit Zogg and Clooney at the centre or phone the staff for more information.

Deputy Mayor Nadine Taylor, Chair of the Assets and Services Committee, says the funding for the upgrades was allocated at the Land Subdivision Account meeting in August last year and covers capital improvements. “These upgrades are really great news for families and children across Marlborough and follow the opening of new playground facilities at Pollard Park, Renwick Domain and Mark Smith Reserve last year.” The committee decision is subject to Council approval on February 27.
