Wine, food, fun! By Aimee O’Hagan

Men and women from around Marlborough, the rest of New Zealand, and even places as far away as Amsterdam got dressed up to the nines on Saturday for an exciting day of wonderful wine, flavoursome food, and plenty of entertainment. There were approximately 7,000 of these guests, all of whom gathered at Blenheim’s Brancott Vineyard to enjoy this year’s Marlborough Wine and Food Festival. Despite the sunny weather turning a little colder towards the end of the day, feedback from attendees was nothing but favourable. “The festival went really well,” says Wine Marlborough events manager, Loren Coffey. “It was a fantastic day out.” Continued on page 2. Popular festival a success once again Continued from page 1. The event’s entertainment line-up proved incredibly popular, with nationally renowned bands (such as Katchafire and The Feelers) and local talent (including Jocee Tuck and Eden Kavanagh) taking to the two stages on site throughout the day. According to Loren, there was a

lot of effort put into the culinary pavillion this year, with accomplished chefs Nick Honeyman, Bradley Hornby, and Peter Gordon visiting to show off their cooking talents. “So far we’ve only had positive comments from exhibitors, guests, and punters,” she says. Two of these happy festival goers

were Ben Parsons and Libby Holdaway, who both say that this was their second time attending the event. “Wine and Food Fest was heaps of fun,” Libby says. “Blenheim is super small so it was cool bumping into so many people we knew and doing tastings from wineries that we regularly drive

past.” “Overall, it was a really great day,” Loren says. Organisers hope next year’s Marlborough Wine and Food Festival will be just as successful. For more photos from the event, see The Sun’s Out and About section on page 14.

It has been a week since a fire took hold in the Forum Building in Blenheim’s CBD, and while it’s caused damage to a number of the businesses and power outages to others, it’s the outpouring of support from the wider community which has had the greatest effect. The Forum Building is owned by Toni and Terry Gillan and has 12 tenants. Toni spoke with the Sun yesterday and says two independent fire investigators, including one from Wellington, have been through and so far have not pinpointed what caused the fire. “It’s no fault of anyone; it’s simply an electrical fire that broke out in the storeroom of CBD Café. What I will say is that the Fire and Emergency people have been absolutely amazing from when they first responded through to the investigation. They’re incredible people,” she says. Since the fire Toni and her husband say the support from the community has been amazing. “Everybody is like us, they can’t believe it,” she says. “It may look small but it’s a huge event for us. We are just boxing on and doing our best to support our tenants. “At the end of the day it takes time but there’s incredible comradery being shown. Going forward it’s about the spirit of the community, so my message

is to please remember to support these affected businesses,” she says. The businesses which suffered fire and smoke damage are now working towards finding short term premises so that they can get back up and running. The CBD Café’s storeroom was where the fire originated. Owners Mike and Tania Godsall say the damage is “extensive” and will be closed for the “foreseeable future”. “The storeroom is a write off and the rest has extensive smoke and water damage. “We do want to try and get up and going asap and are looking at the option of a pop-up café,” they say. “We are humbled by the huge support we are receiving, even from people we’ve never met before. But like a phoenix we will rise bigger and better.” Upstairs, Allure Hair Studio suffered smoke damage. Owners Karen and Joe Maxted say they are trying to make the best of a bad situation and have found temporary space at Hair By Kardos, on Maxwell Road. “It was the smoke that got us,” Karen says. “It looks like it went through the vents and heat pumps. We’re busy packing up what we can and the whole team will be working out of Hair By Kardos from the 17th… we’re very lucky.” Next door at Dolce Bar & Restaurant, owner, Owen Rarity, says he’s focusing on supporting his staff until the business

can get up and running again. “My intention is not to be out of action too long,” he says. “But the building owners have been very good and want to see tenants back to normal as soon as possible. Repairs are still being assessed and like everyone else, we’re itching to get back to business,” he says. The Cancer Society rooms suffered extensive damage, a blow to the team which only recently saw their office renovations completed.

“We are still reeling… it’s heartwrenching, but we hope to update everyone soon,” centre manager Felicity Spencer says. “We are now looking for a short term solution where we can get set up again, but until then we want people who are needing cancer support to know they can get this from their GP or by phoning 0800 CANCER. This number is answered by support and information nurses,” she says.

Community skin clinics The up-and-coming Skin Clinics will be held in Blenheim and Picton to promote awareness of skin health and are open to anyone, entry by donation. The Blenheim clinic will be February 28, 2-7pm at the Marlborough Convention Centre, and in Picton on March 4, 3-7pm at the Picton School Hall.

Blenheim CBD post service temporarily closed Paper Plus Blenheim had to temporarily close following the fire which took place in The Forum building last Wednesday night. Anyone wanting to use the NZ Post services are encouraged to visit the NZ Post in Springlands until the store reopens. Blenheim couple, John and Patsy Nelson (front), had an incredible experience last week when they met one of the world's greatest rock bands - Queen, along with front man, Adam Lambert.

Locals meet rock legends By Celeste Alexander

It was the experience of a lifetime for Blenheim couple, John and Patsy Nelson, last week when they were invited to meet and greet rock band Queen and Adam Lambert (who has been fronting Queen for nearly 10 years). John and Patsy, who have lived in Blenheim for nine years, were all geared up to go to the concert in Wellington as part of Queen’s Rhapsody Tour, but never expected this welcome surprise. John, who is one half of New Zealand band, Late Model European, incidentally released their own album, It’s Time! Luckily John was able to “pull a few strings” with the promoter to make the meet and greet with

Queen happen. “It was such an honour for Patsy and I to share a moment with these rock legends, especially shaking hands with Brian May who has created some of the most memorable guitar riffs and solos ever,” John says. For John, Queen has been a big influence on his musical journey over the years. “Brian was a guitar hero for me growing up and learning guitar way back in the 70s,” he says. Asked how the band members were in real life, away from the stage and adoring crowds, John says “really down to earth”. “They welcomed us with open arms and were very relaxed and responsive to what we said to them. I only wish we could have

had longer. “We spoke of past concerts we had been at including Freddie’s last gig at Knebworth in 1986, and Patsy and I wished Adam, Roger and Brian well on the tour. We also spoke to Adam about his new solo album ‘Velvet’. “They were really down to earth but it all went too quickly,” he says. With his own fond memories of Queen’s legendary frontman, Freddie Mercury, John was asked how well Adam Lambert performed in his place. “In my opinion, and in fact Brian and Roger agreed, there is no one that can sing like Adam Lambert! He is not there to be like Freddie as there will never be another one like him, but Adam puts his own stamp on the songs.

“You can see the joy in Brian and Roger’s faces as Adam smashes out the songs. They called him ‘the gift from God’. “I’ve seen Freddie’s last show in 86 and it is such an amazing thing that they can still put on the most incredible show with Adam,” he says. Asked which were their favourite Queen hits; Patsy says hers is ‘Love Of My Life’, while John’s is ‘Who Wants To Live Forever’, both of which were performed during the concert, much to their delight. According to the couple, the band was enjoying their time in NZ, and first time in Wellington, before heading to Australia where they will headline the Bush Fire Benefit concert next Sunday.

Cowpat sparks fire hazard By Frances Chin

As summer finally begins to heat up, it becomes more and more important to be aware of potential fire hazards. Federated Farmers urges all rural residents to be careful that they don’t spark a blaze. An overlooked fire risk is cowpat sticking to the exhaust of a tractor or other vehicles. “It sticks on there, dries, heats and starts smouldering,” a Federated Farmers spokesperson says. “If that falls into dry grass it can set off flames.”

Another risk is mowing dry grass. Earlier fires in the Marlborough region were thought to have been caused by a stone getting caught between the blades of a mower and causing a spark. “In the current conditions, farmers and others should think very carefully about whether it’s safe to do mowing or topping or any other activity that could cause sparks.” In extremely hot weather powerlines can “sag” and brush foliage underneath. Powerlines can also touch each other in the wind, causing sparks.

In Marlborough, the risk of fire is ever present. On Monday Fire and Emergency services were alerted to a fire on Taylor Pass Road. It is u n k now n what caused the blaze, but it is thought to have started in grass and then spread to surrounding pine trees. Federated Farmers urges all farmers to take precautions. Practices such as bringing a fire extinguisher on farm excursions, or filling empty spray tanks with water could be the difference between a small fire and an uncontrollable blaze.

Blenheim Summer Concert proves popular Sunday afternoon’s sunny weather made for ideal conditions for the Blenheim Summer Concert, which saw hundreds of locals gather at Pollard Park to enjoy a picnic dinner and an evening of live music and entertainment, including performances by The Hummingbirds, the Marlborough District Brass Band, musician

Midge McCleary, and others. While adults watched the performances taking place on stage, children played on the nearby playground and climbing frame. Multiple food vendors were set up on site to keep those who went along happy and refreshed. Photos by Aimee O’Hagan.

A decade to remember I think of the decade from 2010 to 2020 as the decade of the frog. This choice has nothing to do with frog numbers. I selected this decade as the year of the frog because of one of its characteristics. Its nervous system can detect a rapid change in temperature but no absolute temperature. So if a frog is put in a pot of water that is heated very slowly it won’t know anything is wrong. There’s no rapid change in temperature so it believes everything is fine. Eventually the heated water

will kill the frog without the frog knowing why it died. How could it? No one warned it of the danger. During this last decade climate scientists have been warning us of slowly rising global temperatures – and the reasons for it. But we haven’t noticed anything very significant. In any case if we responded to the scientists’ warnings it would affect our lifestyle. It’s better to stay in the pot and continue to worship our most ubiquitous God called Money.

Money is an unseen force with an invisible hand that orders human activity. Hallowed is his name. His Will will be done on Earth. He won’t lead us into the temptation of listening to climate scientists. He will deliver us from the effects of global warming. His is the power and the Glory forever and ever. And should we ever doubt; a loan against the future’s market is always available. By Peter Thomas (this letter has been abridged)

Don’t be a burglary victim By Community Constable Russ Smith

In recent weeks local police have spent considerable time and effort investigating several dozen burglaries that have been reported over recent months. As a result, two men, a 26-yearold and a 39-year-old, both residing locally, were arrested on different dates recently, both remanded in custody and both now face close to twenty charges each. While a number of the burglaries alleged to have been committed

Russ Smith

by these men were at commercial premises and entry to these places was forced, the vast majority of the residential burglaries they allegedly committed to homes, garages and sheds in suburban and rural settings, were easy pickings for them as the buildings were often left insecure or unlocked. While for the time-being, the volume of burglaries has decreased in Marlborough, it will only take another active dishonest individual or two to victimize another large group of locals. Whether you are a business

owner or a residential householder, Police would like you to take a good look at how you protect your property. Business owners need to make sure their premises are well secured after-hours and that attractive or valuable items are either locked away or hard to steal because of an effective security system. Spending money on good security, including a good alarm system, lighting, and a professional safe that is secured effectively to the floor and/or wall, will save you a great deal of expense and

grief should burglars target your business. Your home and all the garages, sheds and buildings on your property should always be locked securely when you’re not there, even for short periods. Leaving valuables like a mower or power tools insecure or leaving windows ajar (even on stays) can tempt a dishonest passer-by onto your property. Almost all local residential burglaries occur when doors or windows are left insecure by absent occupants.

Steampunk creativity on show By Frances Chin

Last Thursday, on Marlborough Heritage Day, contestants showed their creativity during the Marlborough Museum’s Steampunk Competition. Contestants showed off their Victorian costumes with an industrial twist, wearing corsets and bustles, and brandishing lace umbrellas. Posters displayed goggles and cogs galore, and steampunk models were on display to be ogled at.

The winners of the costume competition were: Laila Buunk, Henry Buunk, and Melissa Neal. “We were really pleased,” Marlborough Museum’s Executive Director Steve Austin says. “It was great to see steampunk capturing everyone’s imagination and inspiring them to get involved. “It really appeals to all ages. We were delighted.” The steampunk exhibition will be available all week.

Be alert when on the road Summer is peak motorcycle season in New Zealand, and with plenty of motorcycle events being held around the country, it’s important to be prepared before hopping on your bike, says long time motorcyclist and motorcycle safety advocate John Laing. John has been riding motorcycles for more than 45 years, but racking up the kilometers hasn’t

made him complacent. When it comes to his personal safety on his motorcycle, he is as vigilant as when he was learning to ride. “Before getting on your bike, always make sure you’ve got the right gear on - gloves, helmet, jacket and pants with padding in all the right places,” John says. “Always check your tyre tread

and pressure. There’s only a piece of rubber the size of your palm keeping you on the road, so tyres are absolutely critical for your stability, safety and performance.” Motorcyclists travelling long distances need to be aware of their abilities and not push themselves too far, he says. “If you’ve got a big ride, make sure you get a good sleep and

don’t plan to ride further than you’re able. “People riding as a group should ride only as far as their least experienced rider. You need to be fit for motorcycling and it takes time to build up your stamina for riding.” As well as maintaining physical fitness, motorcyclists need to keep their wits about them, he

says. “Always be alert and take care - not just of other traffic, but the road surface and the fact that other road users don’t always see you as well. “Develop strategies to keep yourself safe. Learn to recognise potentially dangerous situations and be prepared to slow down or pull over,” he says.

Simon Olliver brings his talents back to Blenheim The Marlborough Boys’ College ‘old boy’ is now 31 and keen to bring his experience and skills as an orthodontist back to where he grew up. He talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about returning home, his second stint at university and his new perspective on life in Marlborough. As many teenagers who finish their school years in Marlborough, Simon Olliver could not wait to leave and blaze his own trail. Like many before and no doubt many will after him, he is now delighted to be home. “It’s really nice to be back, it always feels like home, a number of my friends are coming back, the weather is great plus it’s nice to be back closer to my parents. “When I was going to school all I wanted to do was go away and study and travel overseas but now that I’m older, the priorities have changed and I think Blenheim is a pretty great place to live.” His parents, Peter and Jenny Olliver, have taught generations of the region’s teenagers during their time at Marlborough Boys’ College. Not that their classrooms were graced with Simon’s presence all that often.

“When I do a task I have to do it to the best of my ability.” It was the prospect of being in his parents’ respective English and History classes which had an impact on his choice of subjects. “I wanted to avoid being in Mum or Dad’s classes at school so I had to do sciences.

“After leaving Marlborough Boys’ a mate of mine and I went to Otago University and decided dentistry would be a good profession. “I graduated in 2012 and went to Auckland to work as a Dental House Surgeon at Middlemore Hospital followed by three years as a general dentist in the Bay of Plenty.” During that time Simon sat and passed his Fellowship examinations with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in Sydney. Simon says it was his time in Tauranga that made him really see that orthodontics was a way his skills could have a positive impact on people. “I observed a local orthodontist one day and realised it was a good specialty because it’s a positive experience for patients, both young and old. “You give them their smile which gives them confidence during their teenage years and beyond. Having successfully completed his full time three year postgraduate doctorate in orthodontics, Simon felt it was time to return home as a proud Marlburian. “I’m pretty excited to return to Marlborough and bring these skills back to my community”. He is the first from Marlborough to graduate as an orthodontist and will be the first fulltime orthodontic or dental specialist based locally in Blenheim. “I think locals can relate to someone who has worked hard and achieved their goals.”

Former Marlborough Boys’ College Old Boy, Simon Olliver, has returned to Marlborough with his skills as an Orthodontist.

Simon says he has always had a thirst for knowledge and a desire to apply himself to his study and work to the best of his ability. “I never want to be average and I’m a bit of a perfectionist,” he says. “When I do a task I have to do it to the best of my ability. “So when I realised I could be really good at one aspect of dentistry I found that very appealing.” Simon will also travel to Hutt Valley Hospital to treat children born with cleft lip and palate as well as craniofacial anomalies, but the vast majority of his time

will be spent in Blenheim. “It’s a chance to give back to those who really need the assistance and working in a multidisciplinary team is both rewarding and stimulating.” He said going back to study three years ago was different from his first time experience. “There are only three applicants accepted each year, and it was an incredibly demanding course, but in the end really worthwhile. Simon says he wants young people in Marlborough to understand they can achieve on a national and global stage from a small town at

the top of the South Island. Simon will welcome new patients out at Omaka Landing where he is based with long-time friend and colleague Eduard Durrheim at Durrheim and Associates. Simon says his time since Marlborough Boys’ has felt like a blur. “I feel like it’s been a crazy few years but I don’t feel like I’m an anomaly in my year group of Marlborough men. We’ve had many former students do great things and I’m glad to return and serve the next generation of Marlburians.”

We listen to your design needs Building your new home is a very personal experience so when looking for an architectural designer, you want someone who is professional, skilled and most importantly – someone who listens to exactly what you want. This is what Jason Anderson, of Anderson Architectural Design, believes in too. Jason established his busi-

ness seven years ago, a journey which has seen them grow from a home-based business to a larger team now consisting of three architectural designers. This growth prompted Jason to relocate the business to a new location at 62a Market Street (former First National Real Estate building). No matter what size home you are looking to build, Jason

and his team will work alongside you to bring your ideas and even drawings to life. Creating contemporary, stylish and comfortable homes is what Anderson Architectural Design does best. Each and every design reflects not only the wants and needs of the client, but they also compliment the environment in which they are built.

What’s more, Jason and his team’s ability to quickly translate concepts into design renderings save time and money. What are clients who work alongside Jason saying? “He has a refreshing energy with great pride and passion for his chosen profession.” If you would like to know more, call in and see the team. PBA.

In the age of minimalism, having too much stuff can seem like a curse. Does your clutter spark joy? If not, it’s either time to ‘Marie Kondo’ your belongings, or introduce some more storage space. Hooks are an amazing way to free up cupboard or floor space: Pin them behind doors or inside cabinets. A dropped towel can become an elegantly draped fabric when hung from the right hook. And channel your inner J K Rowling by introducing your very own cupboard under the stairs. Hide away books, old DVDs, and general clutter under there. Don’t have stairs? No problem. The art of finding storage derives from this easy mantra: “Everything Can Be Used for Storage If You Believe.” Space behind your flat-screen? Add some shelves and chuck some CDs back there. Room under your bed? Put some open boxes down there. Use your imagination, and your house will look like less cluttered in no time.

Colour yourself happy Every year the new and latest décor trends are enthusiastically talked about as designers and home/business owners look ahead for decorating inspiration. There really isn’t a right or wrong way to plan your décor; with many trends nowadays taking on a less conservative approach, and instead being more about using as much colour and texture as possible; the options are endless. Many of the hottest trends for 2020 are seeing some of the older styles from decades ago pop back up and be woven into modern décor. Big and bold patterns, traditional wooden furniture pieces, materials stripped back to their

original form… there’s no end to what can be achieved. For some added inspiration, here are some top trending decorating ideas. Farmhouse-style: According to Google, a top-search term in 2019 was “farmhouse-style home”. It’s not new to the decorating industry, however it’s a unique blend of wood and steel pieces, often paired with neutral cream tones and bold bright hues. For those who enjoy the authentic ‘older’ look, adding second-hand pieces such as baskets and old wooden boxes can add some character to a space. Unconventional pairing: The term ‘colour-blocking’ is a

popular one, and means the pairing of unconventional colours for a bold statement. If you don’t want these colours on the walls, try adding the colour to window furnishings, cushions, upholstery or even a rug. Is it yellow, or is it green? Chartreuse, a lively citrus colour that is neither yellow or green, has been

gracing homes in recent times due to its growing popularity. Yellow, as we know, is a happy colour known for invigorating the mind and soul, as well as evoking feelings of harmony. Introduce this colour with throws, duvet covers, lamp shades and artwork.

Bathroom revamp Does the thought of staring at the same old tiles as you shower inspire you to get creative and plan a revamp? Then it may be time for a bathroom redo. No need to break the bank, either. • Re-grouting your tiles can be an affordable way to make your bathroom seem new again. Large tiles are great for small bathrooms as they can make a space feel bigger than it actually is. Patterned tiles are very fashionable, and coloured tiles are a great way to add some “pop.”

• Change your bathroom’s colour scheme. Consider the 60-30-10 rule: 60% of your bathroom should be its main colour, such as white, then 30% your midrange, with 10% being your accent. Go bold and bright • Buy some new towels. Nothing is better than a new set of crisp, fluffy towels. Get some fun, crazy colours, or even dye your own! • Change the fittings. A new set of tap fittings is a great, affordable way to bring some sparkle into your bathroom

Mary-Jeanne, Hannah, and Sophie prepare to plummet By Aimee O’Hagan

On February 22, 25 brave Marlburians will be singing Tom Petty’s ‘Free Fallin’’ as they jump 9,000ft from a plane. They’re all taking part in Drop for Youth Marlborough – an initiative which will see participants go skydiving in order to raise money for local organisation, Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough. Those joining in include representatives from the aquaculture industry and multiple Marlborough wineries, teachers from schools around the region, a reporter, a funeral director, real estate agents, and many others. Also taking part will be Marlborough Girls’ College principal, Mary-Jeanne Lynch, and twin sisters and former MGC students, Sophie and Hannah Whittall (‘Team Double Trouble’). The three jumpers are currently “working together” to get their fundraising tallies up to the $1000 required to do the drop. “This is a great opportunity [to collaborate with Mary-Jeanne] because we’ve just left school and our relationship with MGC is still strong,” Hannah says. “What better way to promote the cause?” When asked about why they’re participating in Drop for Youth, all

three say that it’s to “take a risk and support others”. “I’ve got to show kids that it’s okay to step outside of their comfort zones,” Mary-Jeanne says. “I really don’t want to do it, but I’m going to because all money raised is going towards helping our young people.” Being highly involved in what goes on at MGC – both presently and in the past – Mary-Jeanne, Sophie, and Hannah have seen firsthand how GDF programmes such as Stars and Career Navigator positively impact youth in Marlborough. “The Graeme Dingle Foundation is remarkable,” Mary-Jeanne says. “We live in a community where there is so much support for young people. “It’s incredible and exactly why we can do so much in our schools.” So far, fundraising efforts have included Hannah and Sophie holding a sausage sizzle and bake sale at Bunnings Warehouse Blenheim – which successfully raised $515 – and the three doing a ‘surprise’ presentation at MGC to rally support from students. To donate towards the cause, visit https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/ hannah-and-sophie-whittall-dropfor-youth or https://givealittle. co.nz/fundraiser/mj-lynch-dropfor-youth.

Veteran Woodley wins Pukekohe Classic Local veteran Motorcycle racer Jock Woodley competed last weekend at the 41st Annual Pukekohe Classic run by the NZ Classic Race Register club, and came away on top in his class. Jock and the owner/mechanic (Lester Ferdinand) of the 1980 Yamaha TZ350 Grand Prix bike that Jack races, went to the meeting with a fair level of excitement as they have spent some time getting to understand suspension, and getting this bike to handle well. On the Friday prior to the meeting they attended a track test day to try and get a heads up on what was required from the bike to be competitive. “We had five practice/test runs of 15 minutes each, it was very hot, and between each test discussed the bikes behaviour and what options we had, made adjustments and then out for the next test. From the first run out on Friday to the best lap of the weekend was close to a six second gain. We were chuffed,” Jock says.

Qualifying was Saturday morning and out Jock went in the usual mixed class of Pre 1982 Junior, (Jock’s class) in with the big bikes of Pre 1989 Formula 2 and 3; so he was riding amongst big, fast company. Woodley qualified 8th overall on the 350 and 1st in class with the next pre 82 Junior on grid number 16 with about 30 bikes on the grid all up. Due to a power failure in a line of pit garages effecting part of his group, Jock was set to race five races all on the Sunday in order to complete the whole race programme. After a blistering start in race one on Saturday, and running close to the bigger 600cc and 750 bikes at the front of the field Jock was disappointed that the race was stopped. Sunday’s race programme was interesting with a change to the race order to give riders all the points races in one day. “All in all I did those five races on the Sunday and managed to take five wins in the class while

running in the top 8 overall on track. “Aside from incredible racing, a personal best time for me on that circuit, five wins in class, I was treated to a very special first equal place winning the ‘Patrons Trophy’ with my friend Dennis Charlett; awarded for ‘best performance for the week-end’. Dennis raced the Bathurst Replica Roger Freeth McIntosh Suzuki 1200. “We came away elated at the

suspension tuning success and the way the bike performed, feeling very confident about the possibilities for our next race season which we hope to include the Greymouth Street-races on Labour week-end and the ‘Motofest’ New Zealand Nationals meeting at Hampton Downs next year. We may be talked into going to Phillip Island Australia next year for the International Classic also, but we’ll see,” Jock says.

Saddle up for SI Show Jumping Champs By Aimee O’Hagan

Looking for a worthwhile way to spend the upcoming weekend? Why don’t you head to the Marlborough Equestrian Park on Saturday and Sunday to watch the South Island Show Jumping Championships? It’s the first time in 20 years that the event – which is set to see approximately 240 horses and 170 riders from around New Zealand take part – is being held in the region. “We haven’t held it in Marlborough for a long time so there’s been a lot of effort put into it,” says Marlborough Show Jumping committee member, Ross Bisset. “The grounds are looking sensational.” There will be plenty going on for

spectators to see, with the venue boasting three show jumping rings and one show hunter ring. According to Ross, there are about 30 locals participating – including some national level contestants. “There will be some of the best horses and the best riders from around the North Island and South Island competing at the champs,” he says. Although the event will be continuing all weekend long, Sunday afternoon is when the elite of the elite will be attempting to master the most impressive of jumps. “We’ve got horses jumping at olympic heights of 1.6m – there’s nowhere to hide at those sorts of heights!” Ross exclaims. History from the archives The Blenheim Sun Newspaper has teamed up with the Marlborough Museum archives department to provide a weekly snapshot of events, people and historic moments captured through the lens. Each week the Sun will feature a photograph with a caption about the person, place and time, as kindly provided by the Museum.

Pauline 'Susie' Bennett had been a pupil at St Mary's School, Blenheim. This photograph was taken in 1930 with her father, Dr. James Freeborn Bennett, after her first flight with a passenger. Dr Bennett was the Honorary Surgeon of the Marlborough Aero Club.

Sandcastles and digging for prizes this Sunday Do you have some winning ideas for sandcastles? Then come on down to Whites Bay for the More FM Beach day and show off your stuff! Taking place this Sunday, February 16, More FM Marlborough has arranged a number of competitions to get involved with; and of course, an amazing variety of prizes. There is the Peter Ray Holmes Sandcastle competition: perfect for anyone who takes playing in the sand seriously. Categories include: Originality, technical difficulty, and best sea creature. Registration opens at 10:30am and closes at 12:45pm, and everyone who competes is eligible to win a family weekend away at Hanmer Springs. ‘Argh me matey, there be buried treasure ahoy!’ For the MTF Blenheim Beach Dig, tags will be buried in an allocated beach area. If you find one you will win a prize, potentially up to $500! The dig starts at 1pm, and no spades allowed. There will also be a Little Beach Dig for under-fives. And finally, if you can throw like Valerie Adams, this one is for you. BP Computers have provided a brand new Bluetooth speaker, to be won by whoever throws a ball closest to the flag provided, starting at 11.45am.
