In 1981, New Zealand saw its first female accepted into the fire service; she was also the first in the Commonwealth. Back then it was unheard of for women to be recruited, however fast forward nearly 40 years and today brigades are actively promoting firefighting as a career and training
ground to women of all ages. For Renwick woman, Karen Timms, it’s been a five year goal to go through the training to become a qualified senior firefighter. Proudly, she’s recently achieved this and not only realised her goal, but has also become the first female within the Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade to do so. Continued on page 2.
Karen Timms has recently realised her goal of becoming a fully qualified senior firefighter, and is the first female to achieve this within the Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Join us on EASTER SUNDAY on a steam train journey heading South from Blenheim to ‘The Store’ in Kekerengu, travelling on the historic World War 1 memorial locomotive, ‘Passchendaele’ (1915). Departing from Blenheim Railway Station (The Wine Station) on 12th April 2020 - Easter Sunday! Other summer excursions available online including Picton-Blenheim-Picton.

Karen achieves senior firefighter status

Continued from page 1. It’s another ‘tick’ for her 21-yearlong service to the Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade which has seen her carry out a variety of roles. “For me personally this has been something I’ve wanted to do for a number of years,” Karen says. “But family came into the mix so it took a backseat while I waited for the right time.” For Karen her achievement isn’t just about being ‘the first female’ for her brigade, but rather seeing her own personal goals through. “If I’m asked how I feel being the first female, I say it’s not about that. It’s about the goal I set for myself and the hard work it’s taken to achieve it. “For me as a senior firefighter it’s the beginning of a journey of diversity and inclusiveness where I can help make a difference within

my brigade’s wellbeing now and in the future, where anyone, regardless of gender, age, religion, their backgrounds or interests, can contribute their skills to volunteering for Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). If someone has skills and knowledge to share, not only can this benefit FENZ but their community in a variety of ways. “You don’t necessarily have to ride the truck, but there are other aspects of fire and emergency which are also important such as fire reduction, fire prevention education, promotion, and health and safety.” “Everyone has something to contribute and everyone is valued for that,” she says. Supporting Karen as she worked through her training to reach the senior rank has been firefighter husband, Senior Station Officer, Chris,
and their four children. “To get to this point and complete my studies, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without Chris, the kids and our family and friends supporting me,” she says. To become qualified as a senior firefighter Karen had to work through a series of study modules, spend a week in Nelson on a course, then return to her brigade to apply the training. Her course book was then sent to the national training centre for sign off. Also taking part in the course with Karen were two other female firefighters from Christchurch, as well as fellow brigade member Rowan Ingpen, and Craig Stephens from the Blenheim Brigade. With her new senior rank Karen can ride the truck as an officer if required, take training sessions and
in general, be a mentor for other brigade members. “I love what I do. It’s a passion to help the community in its time of need. It’s something special that Chris and I share. Our children are a part of the brigade family and I hope one day they will either follow in our footsteps or volunteer for an organisation in need.” According to the Fire and Emergency NZ 2018/2019 report there were 11,801 volunteer firefighters and 1,810 career firefighters in NZ; 18 percent were female. “Please come down to training on a Monday night from 7.30pm to talk with Chief Fire Brigade Officer or Senior Brigade members if you’re interested in volunteering for FENZ, and don’t forget to check out our Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade Facebook page,” Karen says.

“If it’s what you want to do, then go do it. Follow your passion.” That’s the advice of Blenheim local and talented young musician, 18 year-old Jonty Zydenbos, who was recently awarded a prestigious scholarship to study jazz performance at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington. It’s a three year degree that will hopefully sky-rocket Jonty into the professional world of music; in fact, he’ll be heading to the school this Saturday February 22 to begin his musical journey. “I can’t wait to go... I’m very excited,” Jonty says. “It’s pretty much been my dream since I was about eight years old.” According to Jonty, his passion for music was born when he was five. “I joined the Salvation Army Band with David Brooks as band master,” he says. “When I got a little bit older, I saw one of the Marlborough District Brass Band’s concerts... I wanted to take my music a little bit further so I started getting lessons from Graham Moseley, and eventually joined the junior brass band. “Kevin Moseley took over teaching me, and probably taught me for about five years or so. “That got me into the main MDBB and I made my way up there.” Since then, Jonty has attended five national brass band contests, winning three national titles in the solo section. Buildings come down for library/art complex The striking blue and green coloured buildings which used to house Warehouse Stationery, PC Media and Liquorland, are now turning to rubble as demolition work begins. The site is being cleared to make way for the construction of the new Marlborough District Library and Art Gallery. The building’s floor plan and concept design will be available for viewing next month.

overseen by Tony and Coral Thiel. In fact, Jonty competed in his final Southern Jam Festival in August last year, which saw MBC take out gold award and Jonty receive multiple individual awards such as best trumpet player. Jonty only recently returned from a tour of Japan alongside the Wellington City Salvation Army Band and a tour of the South Island with the New Zealand National Youth Brass Band. T here a re too many of Jonty’s other achievements to mention. After completing
his degree at the NZSM, the young musician plans on going abroad. “I’m looking at travelling over to Chicago or NYC to finish my studies at Berklee or Julliard,” Jonty explains. “America is the heart of jazz and I want to immerse myself in it. “After that, I’m open to anything. I’m interested in performing on cruise ships, maybe some recording work. Eventually, Jonty aims to start teaching – inspiring other young musicians like himself and acting as a role model to look up to, much like the various teachers he has had over the years. “I’ve been given all these talents and I think it would be a waste not to pass my knowledge onto the next generation,” he says. “Music is my whole life.”

Penpals Trish and Pat finally unite It’s not every day that you come across two women – from different countries – who were penpals from the age of 10 to 22 and, after approximately 50 years of no contact, have finally met each other for the first time. When Blenheim local Trish Robertson discovered a picture of former UK-based penfriend, Patricia Young (nee Wood), when sorting through a box of old photographs, she was inspired to find a way of getting in touch. “I couldn’t get Pat out of my mind!” Trish says. “I really wanted to do something, so I went online and googled [local] newspapers [in the area that Pat used to live].” From there, Trish got in contact with one of the city’s community newspapers and had a notice published on it’s ‘Reunited’ page. Amazingly, the notice was discovered by a family friend and was passed onto Pat herself. “It was meant to be, otherwise nobody would have seen it,” Trish smiles. Soon afterwards, the two women were back in touch again – but this time via email. The pair first began corresponding back in the early 1960s, when Pat was living in Low Fell, England, and Trish was living in Levin. “We had neighbours that we called Aunty Gladys and Uncle Jim,” Pat explains. “One day, Aunty Gladys asked me if I would like a penpal [who
lived] in NZ.” “The relation there was that Aunty Gladys was my grandmother’s cousin,” Trish adds. “So that was how it all began.” After that, Pat and Trish became dedicated penpals; writing airmail letters and aerogrammes to one another, and sharing stories about family, school, and even their favourite celebrities. “When I was young, I loved Elvis Presley,” Trish reminisces. “Pat wrote to me and told me about this up-and-coming young singer they had in Britain, Cliff Richard, so I must’ve gone out and bought some of his records or something. “I fell in love with him. My mother was very grateful to Pat [because she didn’t like Elvis]!” Correspondence between the two came to a standstill when they got married; uncannily, with both Patricias marrying men named David! The last communication Pat remembers is a telegram from Trish that arrived on the day she and her husband Dave got married. Since then, both parties have lived very separate lives – raising children, having grand-children, and moving from place to place around the country (in Trish and David’s case). Soon after Trish and Pat got in touch once more, Pat broke the news that she and Dave were planning on coming to NZ. The couple arrived in NZ last week, with Trish and David picking them up from Marlborough Airport last Friday.
“I don’t think we’ve stopped talking since,” Trish smiles. “We’ve got a few years of catching up [to do]!” Pat adds. Pat and Dave will be in New Zealand until March 1 and plan on playing “a number of games of golf”, going on a mailboat trip in the Marlborough Sounds, visiting Milford Sound and Te Anau, and simply catching up with Trish and David.
Trish’s notice that she placed in a Low Fell community newspaper.

Rock’n’soul live By Frances Chin
Blenheim is currently preparing for a performance by San Diego band, the Schizophonics, on Wednesday February 26. Promoting their new album ‘People in The Sky,’ American couple Pat and Lety Beers team up with kiwi bass-man Takumi McIntyre as they tour New Zealand and Australia. Heavily influenced by artists like Iggy Pop and James Brown, the Schizophonics sound like the 70s refreshed and renewed. They come bringing the Rock’n’ soul sound to The
Plant, one of Blenheim’s newest performing spaces. Their live-shows are athletic feats, with Pat Beers described as “levitational,” capable of splits and 720 degree spins, all while channelling Jimmy Hendrix as he one-handedly destroys his guitar and the ear drums of those closest. It’s all gyrating, all groovin’, all rock ‘n’ roll! So, if you want to see a live show like nothing you’ve ever seen, buy your ticket to see the Schizophonics today! Curiosity over sculpture F o u n d a t A d a m ’s Place on Market Street, a sculpture of a giant hand holding a $1 coin is quickly on its way to becoming another addition to Blenheim’s landmark artworks. The a r twork, called ‘Heads Nor Tails,’ was anonymously donated to the Millennium Art Gallery on the condition it be displayed in central Blenheim, and is already causing a stir in its day to day observers, with buzz generating around the sculpture’s hidden meaning. Sculptor Josh Olley will be travelling to Marlborough from Otago around March in order to provide the sculpture with an explanatory plaque. This plaque will aim to help the public understand the meaning behind the sculpture’s symbolism.

A sustainable Marlborough future The insidious silent march of wilding pine across our mountain catchments is the greatest threat to water yields of most Marlborough river systems and every year they go unchecked leads to a greater loss in water yield (river flow). It is now becoming an annual summer headline as local papers read, Waihopai, Awatere, Wairau and tributaries are just days to a week away from shut off thresholds which could effect close on 600 irrigators while not
forgetting urban dwellers reliant on our river systems for potable water and electricity generation. Marcus Pickens (Wine Marlborough General Manager) said (Marlb. Express 7th Feb) “I would say the whole industry is badly exposed” So perhaps its time to act, before worst case scenario we lose 80% of our river water yields. Its an election year so perhaps the political party candidates need to be quizzed on their political partie’s position to mit-
igating in Marlborough’s case, successive governments planting conifers through the 60s,70s and 80s. These pests which are now regarded as Crown Legacy Plantings and subsequent spread need to be eradicated for the good of Marlborough. So vote accordingly. It should also be noted the PMEP (Proposed Marlborough Environment Plan) is due to be released on Feb 20 and some groups are very interested to see how Council propose to manage
the Wairau Aquifer which is losing volume and provides water to Renwick, Woodbourne and Blenheim. The simple solution, rid the upper catchments of wilding pine to increase water yields which in turn will increase the recharge of the aquifer. Hopefully the Council have a management plan with teeth in the PMEP to deal with coni-fers and there spread and if not its time for fresh faces. Murray Chapman.

International artists to showcase in local exhibition By Celeste Alexander
The Marlborough Art Society will be presenting an exciting international exhibition curated by local artist and educator, Sudhir Duppati. The exhibition is titled ‘Hononga’, which means connections in Maori culture. The opening preview will be held on Friday, February 28 at 6pm and the exhibition will run through to March 22 at the Marlborough Art Society Gallery. As an artist and educator, Sudhir will be bringing together works by six contemporary international artists; Fawad Tamkanat, Ermias Ekube, Sreekanth Kurva, Pramod Reddy, Kandi Narsimlu, Afza Tamkana, along with his own as well. All of these artists have connections to Sudhir as friends and associates throughout the course of his career as an artist. Sudhir says it is his desire to bring together an exhibition that is “diverse in nature as the artists span across various countries”. “This is also to establish and promote within New Zealand an international perspective of different artists and their cultural backgrounds,” he says.
“I travelled to India in January 2020 and collected their works to bring back with me. I am also planning to take this show to other cities in NZ.” Indian artist, Sreekanth Kurva, who is one of the six exhibiting artists, is mainly influenced by animals on the street and in the flea market near his Begum Bazaar home in Hyderabad. Through his original paintings of the animal world, he engages with human traits such as passion, anger, vanity and submissiveness as well as virtues of patience, benevolence vigilance and pragmatism. Kurva is also coming to NZ to hold a workshop in Mixed Medium art on May 2-3 He is a skilled artist with a lot of techniques up his sleeves to share. This two day workshop is aimed at all levels and age groups and most of the material will be supplied. Don’t miss this golden opportunity to come and indulge in picking a few new skills and techniques in art. Book your space at the Marlborough Art Society by contacting Helen Ballinger on 02102678711 or email: workshops@marlboroughartsociety.co.nz PBA.

Sue’s selling point - people Sue Duckworth is a people person. After 35 years in the real estate industry, retirement has seen her launch a new business as a family historian. She talks to Blenheim Sun reporter Jacob Page about getting used to small town life, the evolving real estate industry and why Gold Card life has never been for her. It could be argued few people have adjusted to life in Marlborough better than Sue Duckworth. Growing up in Christchurch attending St Margaret’s College, and then having a stint in Wellington before settling in Picton in 1976. “I thought I’m a city girl, I’m not sure how I’m going to go in a small town. “When your children are young it’s easier to meet people and I found I quite liked living in a small town. “I just threw myself into everything playcentre, squash, tennis.” Her foray into real estate came after a thought in the back of a car in Wellington during the early 1970s. “When we lived in Wellington in 1973 we were trying to buy a house and we were being shown places by this company in Johnsonville that was all women. “In that day women weren’t in real estate, it was unheard of. “I had a light bulb moment in the back of the car when the woman who was showing us around said she needed to drop off her daughter to her parent’s place after school and I thought ‘this is a job I could do’.” It was not until 1983 when her career got the break it needed after several failed attempts. “I’d been selling education books as a little job before then but I couldn’t wait to get started. “When I moved to Picton I approached one of the firms saying I wanted to work in real estate and was told in no uncertain terms that they did not hire women - I was set back on my heels somewhat. “I got a job at the TAB on the weekends but I was still determined to do it. “There was a guy who moved up from
Christchurch called Derek McKay who was going to open a small office with his wife and he said ‘you come work for me, I’ll teach you’.” Sue says selling real estate came naturally. “Because I had lived in Picton since ‘76 I was reasonably well known. “I never found it difficult. “I always knew I had to have a job interacting with people. “Back in the 80s we were called land agents and it wasn’t as sophisticated - a fax machine was a novelty and we certainly didn’t have mobile phones. “The expectation was to sell a house you had on a one line ad in the paper and you didn’t have to pay for it.
“I didn’t have a holiday for the first 33 years because I didn’t want one, I was having too much fun.” “There were no photographs and you never let people look around the property, you just drove them to various addresses. “Open Homes didn’t come in until 1990. “We used to have a saying that we’d drive people around until they purchased a house or died. “The industry certainly has changed.” Sue says looking back on the industry she retired from in 2017, she never expected to be in it so long. “I initially went into real estate to get the kids through boarding school and I thought I would have to earn some extra money.

Retired real estate agent, Sue Duckworth, has started a new business as a family historian.
“I didn’t have a holiday for the first 33 years because I didn’t want one, I was having too much fun.” I often wondered what my city contemporaries were doing while I was jetting around in a float plane in the Marlborough Sounds - it was amazing.” She says a proud moment for her was when she became an auctioneer in the early 90s. “Nobody really did auctions back then but once I fully valued auctions as a way to sell a house, it really rounded out my career nicely. “I think it’s a great method of sale because it creates competition and you just never know who is there and what bids you might get.” Sue has always been community-minded and it was those ideals that got her involved with The Blue Door Charitable Trust.
“I got involved through Graeme Fuller who was a well-known accountant in town. “When he approached me I felt that was something that would appeal to me. “I started as secretary and then eventually became Chair and nine years later I’m still here,” she says. “We are recognised as a major funder in Blenheim and when we started 22 years ago we wanted to be a household name but we started to fly when we moved from our Charles Street premises to Seymour Street. That’s when we took off. “People say the store is like a supermarket and it’s certainly grown over the years. At 73, Sue is not one for retirement, which is why she has started her own family history business which allows people to better
understand the history of both themselves and their loved ones. “I needed to have that people fix even when I left real estate. “Because I’m at the age where funerals become part of my life, you meet people who say ‘I didn’t know that about them etc’ and while I wasn’t any good at English at school my years in real estate taught me how to write a good ad and I used to write the odd newsletter.” I was talking to Catherine Donnelly from Age Concern and she said ‘why don’t you write people’s life stories?’ “So I jumped at it and I love it.” While splitting her time with the new business venture, she also gets to play more golf. “Is it improving? she ponders. “Well I’m playing more so it’s a work in progress.”

Half a century of Rotary service By Frances Chin
In this modern age when free time is limited, less and less people are prepared to commit to volunteer roles long-term. This makes Blenheim resident Doug Saul all the more remarkable, as for 50 years Doug has been a member of the Blenheim Rotary Club. Doug was born in Palmerston North, and moved with his family to Blenheim when he was young. Doug’s family own the company Zorite, which does painting, plastering, and roofing services. Doug and Ralph Caulton both coached the Marlborough Rugby Team together for two years, and in 1973 the Marlborough Rugby team won the Ranfurly Shield. “Winning the shield was like magic,” he says. Doug also coached the Marlborough seven-a-side rugby team and won the NZ Championship in Auckland in 1975 and again in Christchurch in 1976. He then took the team to the Sevens competition in Hong Kong where they were runner up to Fiji. Doug has been a member of the Blenheim Rotary Club since the 1970s. The club has changed greatly since Doug first joined. Back in the day, there used to be 84 members, each with a different qualification.
“In those days we could only have one person for each classification. The rules have changed.” After half a century with Blenheim Rotary Doug continues to fully believe in the necessity of the club and the services they provide the community. “What I do in Rotary is really good,” Doug says. “It’s a good club and there are lovely people to connect with. “We’re always looking for members, and anyone can put their name forward.” A cause that Doug is especially proud of is the effort to “immunise the whole world against polio.” Spear-headed by Rotary International, this initiative goes back 20 years or so. “We’ve almost done the whole world,” he says. “Some people from Blenheim went to India, to jab the old needle in.” Despite Blenheim having its own Polio epidemic in the 20th century, “a lot of people didn’t know what polio was”. “Some people had to go in the iron lung, and some people were crippled for life.” Doug continues to serve as a member of the Rotary Club, and has no plans to give it up. “What we do is for the province and the young ones,” he says.

The Sun
Welcome to The Blenheim Sun’s - Men in Business Feature where we shine the light on local men in business
Name: Jason Anderson Occupation: Company Director Anderson Architectural Design
Name: Brendon Price Occupation: Owner / Manager of BPComputers
What does your role entail?
What does your role entail?
Creating contemporary, stylish, and comfortable homes. I work with my clients to bring ideas to life in a way that compliments the environment they are building in.
A lot of people assume I sit behind a computer all day repairing them. Most of my day is actually spent in an admin type roll and talking with customers. I also take a general overview of the business and make sure the team have what they need to do their jobs effectively.
What has been your biggest achievement?
What has been your biggest achievement?
Most recently, winning gold at the 2019 Master Builders House Of The Year for a house that I designed for myself. Aside from that, setting up my company almost three years ago and building it up from a home-based business into what it is today.
There’s no big achievements spring to mind. Maybe lots of small to medium size achievements?
What do you love about what you do? I love the creative nature of what I do, but also meeting and working with some great people and watching their dreams materialise into bricks and mortar. No two collaborative processes with clients are the same, which makes what I do very enjoyable.
How do you define success? Having clients who are 100 percent happy. It’s as simple as that.
What do you do in your downtime? Living in Marlborough has so many advantages. I spend my downtime camping, playing golf and tennis, fishing, bush walking, and taking the dogs to the river. And I quite like firing the bbq up from time to time.
What is your unique selling point that sets you apart from the rest? According to my clients I’m fun and easy to work with. They use words like ‘talent’, ‘vision’, ‘energy’ and ‘passion’. I’m big on communication and offering an all round excellent service.
What do you love about what you do? It’s a bit of a cliché, but genuinely I get a lot of satisfaction in solving peoples problems or making things more efficient. To know you’ve made someone elses job easier is quite satisfying. Also through my job I have met a wide range of people, some of whom have become good friends.
How do you define success? For me success is being happy with life. I’m grateful to be surrounded by so many good people, both at work and in my private life. Success is being able to do what I want, when I want (within reason). Success is having a great team to work with who all have the same overall goals. I’m very fortunate to have this as well.
What do you do in your downtime? One thing I don’t do is use computers! My wife Hannah, two daughters Grace (6) and Sophie (3) and I live on a lifestyle block just out of town so there’s always something needing doing there. Otherwise I’m spending time with family and friends, I’ll be in my shed tinkering, or if I’m feeling motivated up the Wither Hills for a walk / run.
What is your unique selling point that sets you apart from the rest? We’ll fix anything IT related, and if we can’t we’ll most likely know who can. The team here love a challenge. We’ve done this for 22 years and we’re fully locally owned and operated.
Name: Brendon Adams Occupation: Company Director Laser Electrical Blenheim
Name: Garry Boyd Occupation: Company Director Viridian Glass Blenheim
What does your role entail?
What does your role entail?
My role is very much a ‘people’ role. I like to say that I ‘look after the people who look after the people’, in other words my staff, our clients, our suppliers and subcontractors. I also spend some of my time carrying out electrical inspections, being one of the few in Marlborough certified to do so.
I manage a large team of highly skilled glaziers, ensuring we have the right stock at the right time to meet job deadlines and keep the flow of work moving at a timely pace. I also spend a lot of time on the tools.
What has been your biggest achievement?
What has been your biggest achievement?
Being involved in four Monkey Off Your Back motorcycle rides in the last four years, and helping to raise $250,000 for mental health. I’ve been on three rides in Australia and have just returned from a ride that covered the length of New Zealand.
Transitioning a well-established family-owned business that had been operating in Marlborough for over 30 years into a franchise model under Viridian Glass, through a couple of relocations into our state-of-the-art glass solutions showroom on Grove Road.
What do you love about what you do?
What do you love about what you do?
That’s easy. Working with people. It’s an old saying, but when you love what you do you never work a day in your life. This extends to all the people I am in touch with day to day.
This industry is constantly evolving and some of the technical innovations that are coming through are simply amazing. Providing a range of glass solutions that improve peoples lives, enhance their environments, and increase the value of their property is the most rewarding part of what I do.
How do you define success? Success for me is seeing the smiles on the faces of the people that my team and I interact with on a daily basis. We often have clients who are blown away by the quality of our work and our level of service. For me, that’s a great result.
What do you do in your downtime? It’s a busy life but I do manage to play a bit of golf, do martial arts training, and more so of late, ride my motorbike.
What is your unique selling point that sets you apart from the rest? If I was to point to one thing, it would be the family culture within our team and work environment. This flows through to everything we do, but most notably our service and response times for our clients.
How do you define success? It depends on what you determine as success. Success for me at work is having customer satisfaction whatever size the job is. It’s not always obtainable but a great target, and something I am constantly aiming for.
What do you do in your downtime? Downtime is generally something I don’t do well. As a recovering workaholic I’m always keeping busy, though it is good to chill with family whenever I can.
What is your unique selling point that sets you apart from the rest? We are part of the largest network of glass suppliers and installers in Australasia, but we are essentially locally owned and operated and still very much a family business. When you talk to us, you’re talking to locals who are passionate about what they do.

Nod of approval for new bus routes By Celeste Alexander
As the Monday morning sun shone over the Uxbridge Street bus stop in Renwick, three patient locals waited in anticipation, and out of curiosity, to experience one of the first commuter bus rides to take them to Blenheim. The Blenheim to Renwick service, and a new Blenheim commuter service, will provide Marlburians with greater transport, and will operate from Monday to Saturday, running four daily circuits on weekdays - one early morning, one mid-morning, one mid-afternoon and one early-evening. It will also run two circuits on a Saturday - one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon. Monday’s three passengers, two Gold Card holders and a mother with her young daughter, eagerly stepped up into the Ritchies bus and took their seats. Also along for the journey were Marlborough District Councillor, Cynthia Brooks, MDC finance and information supervisor (assets and services), David Craig, and yours truly - Sun reporter Celeste Alexander. This was the 9.30am bus from Renwick to Blenheim. The earlier
run arrived in Renwick at 7.25am for anyone wanting to take advantage of using public transport to get to work. As the bus took us through Renwick, into Woodbourne, stopping briefly at the Marlborough Airport, before driving through to Blenheim and even pulling up right outside Pak’nSave supermarket, David and Cynthia shared their combined hope that more people would use the service. For David, it’s been a project that’s been building momentum since April 2018 when a survey was first undertaken. He has coordinated the planning and implementation of the services. “The plan is to run the two new bus services over an 18month trial period, and then afterwards we will do an assessment to see if it’s viable to continue,” David says. “We are really encouraging people to take advantage of this and hoping for a good pickup in the Woodbourne area. It’s also suited to Gold Card holders who ride for free during the off-peak times and all weekend,” he says. For Cynthia it’s a transport solution that not only provides a useful link for Renwick residents to Blenheim, but also an opportunity for people to visit Renwick for a few hours.
Marlborough District Councillor, Cynthia Brooks, and council's finance and information supervisor for assets and services, David Craig, pictured Monday morning taking a bus ride from Renwick to Blenheim; the launch day for the new commuter bus services for Blenheim and Renwick.
“I’m a firm believer in public transport and the effectiveness of it,” she says. “I’m definitely taking advantage of this more regularly when I retire; you can sit back and be taken to town. “There’s also a nice social element to it as well,” she adds. “I can see this benefiting young mums, seniors and even teenagers
on the weekend wanting to go to town.” Renwick residents, George Arnesen and Fay Bowler, both agreed. “I like to go to the stadium for a swim three times a week, so this is a great option for me,” George says. “I can see myself having a swim and staying in town for
a bit of lunch before returning home; plus it’s good for us Gold Card holders as it’s free between 9am – 3pm.” “I think it’s a wonderful idea,” Fay says. “I can get into town without having to drive, pay my bills and do some visiting. “I think I will use this every week now,” she adds.

The right vitamins can aid healthy sleep patterns.
Vitamins for good sleep It’s the middle of the night but you still haven’t managed to fall asleep. You have been tossing, turning and willing your body to rest but for some reason it just won’t; and you’re wide awake! Aside from stress, busy work schedules, late night use of devices and caffeine after 6pm, there are other overlooked factors which could be causing your sleep problems – vitamin deficiency. Here are some of the vitamins which could aid in your sleep recovery, whether it be through diet or supplements. Vitamin C: You probably already know of vitamin C’s importance to your immune system, but did you also know it’s vital to sleep? According to studies people who have low blood levels of vitamin C had more sleep issues and
were more prone to waking up during the night. Iron: Iron helps transport oxygen throughout your body, which is why a deficiency can leave you feeling fatigued. Remember how Popeye eats spinach and becomes strong and powerful? Yep, spinach is packed with iron. An iron deficiency has been linked to restless leg syndrome, a condition that causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an urge to move the legs when falling asleep. Magnesium: This essential mineral assists your body in producing the sleep hormone melatonin. Magnesium also relieves muscle tension that can prevent restful sleep; it can even help ease tension by encouraging production of an amino acid known as GABA, which that relaxes

the nervous system. Vitamin B12: This vitamin keeps the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy and helps the body create energy. However low levels can cause fatigue, sleep disturbances, numbness and tingling, and other symptoms. L-tryptophan: This essential amino acid builds proteins. You need tryptophan to make niacin, a B vitamin vital to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that helps produce healthy sleep patterns. Calcium: Sleep studies have found that found calcium deficiency could disrupt the dream cycle of sleep known as rapid eye movement (REM). When the researchers brought calcium levels up to normal, the volunteers regained normal REM sleep.

his team. “It hasn’t just got one runway, so classic aircraft can take off into the wind,” Tony says. Omaka has become a bit of a hub for aircraft restoration, Tony says. Paul and Pip Hally from PMH Aviation Limited collect aircraft that have a rich history with the region. They’ve brought back to Marlborough a De Havilland Foxmoth from 1947, one of only seven in the world. With two other parties, they are rebuilding a Waco aircraft, which is the only one of its type in the world, and was previously owned by Marlborough Aero Club in 1936. “Whether you like aviation or not these aircraft are very significant to the region,” Pip says.

Graham Orphan has been publishing the Classic Wings Magazine for 25 years out of Omaka. Having lived in three different countries and travelled many more, Graham chooses to live in Marlborough specifically for the airfield. “I can’t think of a place I’ve lived in or visited, or another community with the richness and ability to work together for the greater good than Omaka,” Graham says. From the world-class Omaka Airshow to the Aviation Heritage Museum and everything else in between, the buzz around Omaka still grows. “People from all over the world are drawn to the positive energy and great activities here. “The community is absolutely remarkable,” Graham says.
The Marlborough Aero Club at Omaka Aerodrome has a long and intertwined history with the Marlborough region and its community. Established in 1928, it is one of the first aero clubs established in New Zealand and the first to own its own plane. Last year the Marlborough Aero Club celebrated its 90 year anniversary in April with an open day, where the public were invited to have a look around the Omaka Aerodrome. The club has over 350 members from all over the country and around the world. The Aero Club teaches students of all ages and stages flying and other vital aircraft skills, whether for recreational or professional

Omaka a world-wide attraction
Omaka Aerodrome is a hidden gem in Marlborough, but is well known on the world stage. With its grassy runways, wide open spaces, world class restoration projects on classic aircraft, and one-of-a-kind aeroplanes, it’s a buzzing community. For aviation enthusiasts, you can’t beat the ideal flying weather that the region offers. With facilities like this, it’s no surprise that a small town like Blenheim has individuals from all over the globe coming to check out its heritage. For Classic Aero Machinery Service’s Tony Wytenburg, the Omaka Aerodrome location is essential to his aircraft restoration work. The several grass runways provide ideal conditions for the many classic aircraft which are built and tested by Tony and

Ten GP Hydroplanes will be the stars of the show as the Hydro Thunder race series stages its third event at the ENZED Rotoiti Power Boat Club Regatta over February 29 and March 1 in the Lake Rotoiti National Park. Always a popular event, club spokesman, Joe Blakiston, says this year’s is particularly impressive with several new divers and boats in the GP series as they prepare for next year’s World Championships, which are to be held in New Zealand.
As always the Lupton family will be strong contenders with Ken Lupton driving LUCAS Oils GP577 which is currently ahead in the tightly contested series. The GP 77 Miss New Zealand is currently second, driven by Canadian speed merchant Scott Liddycoat with former NZ champions, Jack Lupton and Scott Coker, and David Alexander also right in contention. South Island support will be all on GP273 Lady Liz driven by Southlander Jason Haggerty.
A full weekend of racing will be offered on Lake Rotoiti with Formula 1 Tunnel boat racer and current New Zealand champion, Julian Stilwell, racing to fix his engine in time for the regatta plus racing runabouts, inboards and the popular clubman racing. Joe Blakiston says the club is fortunate to have the support of DOC and the Rotoiti community, and reminds people that racing starts at 10am each day. No Dogs or drones are allowed in the National Park.

Marlborough athletes smash coast-to-coast By Frances Chin
Marlborough athletes are already playing sports, running, and preparing for next year’s event only three weeks after completing the Coast to Coast multisport event. Marlborough Boys’ College prefect, Logan Lowther, placed third in the school’s individual category, with a time of 14 hours and 23 minutes, despite not being able to run the Goats Pass section. Local business owner, Ian Martella, placed 90 of 136, with a time of 15 hours, sixteen minutes and 42 seconds.
“I was within a minute of my last time,” Ian says. “I had a few goals, but didn’t really hit them. “If you don’t hit your targets you have to do it next year,” he says. For training, Ian ran 1000 km a month, through tracks such as around Lake Rotoiti and the Lake Angelus Cascade. “You turn the training into little adventures,” Ian says. “I saw some amazing country in the back of Marlborough.” During the Coast to Coast Ian found the run the most difficult as he injured his knee. “It was in a lot of pain.
Saturday and Sunday saw the annual South Island Show Jumping Championships held at Marlborough Equestrian Park for the first time in 20 years. Approximately 170 riders and 240 horses from around New Zealand – including 30 locals – took part in the champs, with horses jumping to heights as tall as 1.6metres. Many members of the public came along to support those taking part. “It was a fantastic weekend,” says Marlborough Show Jumping committee member, Ross Bisset. “The feedback from those who came along was amazing.” Organisers of the event are incredibly grateful for the support from Marlborough District Council and other sponsors, and would like to say a big thank you to all who helped out in preparation of the event. Mentally, it was difficult to push through. “At the end of the day it’s a really mentally taxing race,” Ian says. However, Ian still managed to appreciate the beautiful South Island scenery as he made his way from the West to East Coast. “[The Kayak leg] is always visually stunning.” Ian managed to make up for lost time while cycling the home stretch. “The last bike ride home was awesome; I did 70km in Local business owner, Ian Martella, battled two hours. It’s a pretty cool the elements while competing in the Coast-tofeeling.” Coast multisport event recently. Photo provided.
