Bike to work By Frances Chin
It’s time to leave the car in the driveway and jump on a bike, as today is ‘Go By Bike’ Day. Sponsored by the Marlborough District Council, ‘Go By Bike’ Day is part of the nationwide Aotearoa Bike Challenge. The Marlborough District Council held a free breakfast at Liz Davidson Place this morning to support participants as they peddled their way to work. A local who often “goes by bike” is retiree, Joanna Hepburn. A keen environmentalist, Joanna likes cycling as it fits into the ecofriendly lifestyle she lives. Continued on Page 2. Blenheim retiree, Joanna Hepburn, says her quest to be more environmentally conscious sees her cycle almost daily, rather than driving.

Continued from page 1. Joanna’s environmentalism was inspired by her father, who was a great admirer of Richard St Barbe Baker, an environmentalist who travelled the world fighting deforestation. Joanna worries about the consequences of not respecting the environment. “The picture gets lost with eco stuff,” Joanna says “We don’t see any consequences for years. “My grandchildren will be living with the consequences.” Joanna owns a specialised e-bike, purchased two years ago, and rides it most days. “I’ve been out to Renwick, and the Vines Village. “I’ve done 30 kilometres. “It’s comfortable, with a proper seat, easy to ride and quiet.” However, there is a feature Joanna likes the most.

Joanna prefers to pedal “I’m adverse to hills and wind,” Joanna says. “No hills or wind on an electric bike.” E-bikes have certainly made cycling more accessible and convenient for people of all ages and abilities, says Marlborough District Council’s Walking and Cycling Coordinator, Braden Prideaux. “For many people this allows them to cycle faster and more often, meaning they’re more likely to swap the short commute in their car for their bicycle. This is not only a positive outcome for their own health and wellbeing but is also a low-cost, emission free option that reduces congestion on our roads. “I cycle to work every day – I enjoy the fresh air on the way to work and is a low-cost option to travelling around Blenheim,” he says. Joanna understands that cycling

can be intimidating, especially on busy roads. “I think a lot of people are scared to be on the road. I’d walk on a back-road and get on a cycle road,” Joanna says. “Get your confidence up.” The Marlborough District Council
will be running an Adult Cycle Skills training programme in March. If you would like more information on this course, keep checking this page: www.marlborough.govt.nz/recreation/cycling-and-walking/cycling/ cycle-skills-training.

From the community’s perspective, Marlborough Colleges’ representatives seem to have gone quiet in regards to news about the ongoing colleges’ co-location project; but sources say the project is definitely continuing to progress. With the education brief (which lays out the schools’ visions for teaching and learning in a new environment) currently being finalised, Head of Education Infrastructure Service at the Ministry of Education, Kim Shannon, says that the project brief (a document outlining how the visions will come to life through
the design of the new property) is also expected to be completed by at least halfway through 2020. The design brief is set to be completed by the end of 2020, but there has been no decision made about when the $100 million process of moving Bohally Intermediate School to the current Marlborough Boys’ College site, and vice versa, then the re-construction of the schools, will begin. The project is one of the Ministry’s largest projects that they have worked on yet and is “particularly complex” because of the need to “minimise disruption” to the schools throughout the building process, Kim says.
Marlborough Girls’ College principal, Mary-Jeanne Lynch, says that she, other staff members, and students are all feeling “really positive” about the project. “It’s a really exciting project,” she says. “It will offer a remarkable chance to create learning opportunities for Marlborough Girls’ and Marlborough Boys’ students. “That’s really what we’re aiming for.” “We are in regular contact with all three schools,” Kim says. “Supporting them in continuing to deliver high quality education during the project remains a key priority.”

Bride show back on By Celeste Alexander
Brides; save your wedding dresses and mark this date in your diary, September 12, because the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Club will once again be holding the Bride of the Year Show for 2020. At the beginning of the year it was announced that this popular and almost iconic Marlborough event would be taking a break. However, a new organising group is stepping in and it will be headed by local marriage celebrant, Carol Taylor, who many will remember has previously hosted the show for 12 years. “It’s happening ladies and will be going back to a previous format with tables at the Marlborough Convention Centre,” Carol says. “There will be some new changes here and there; however the important thing to know right now is that the show isn’t going anywhere. “I’m excited to be stepping back into the role as convenor with the backing of the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Club.” Carol is encouraging local brides who were married between July 21, 2019 and August 31, 2020 to hold on to their wedding gowns and consider entering into the Bride of the Year Show. “This show has always been held annually, and by the Lions, to raise money for local charities. Brides can relive their wedding day by putting on their gowns again, meet other ladies and have a really fun night,” she says. A new organising committee is coming together to begin preparations

Locator beacon helps find tramper Last Saturday a Blenheim man tramping in a remote area of the Awatere Valley on the western side of Mt. Tapuae-o-Uenuku, suffered a disabling injury to his knee. He tried to persevere, and continued walking out as best as he could, but eventually the pain and damage to the knee meant he had to stop and he was unable to continue. Fortunately the man had a personal locator beacon with him and was able to activate it. Within an hour he had been picked up from where he was by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter and was flown to Wairau Hospital where his injury was assessed for treatment. If you tramp, hunt or travel in remote or rural areas, you should always carry a personal locator beacon. If you find yourself in serious trouble, it could be the difference between living and dying, Police say.

Police have been receiving a steady stream of information in recent weeks from the public about suspicious activity and cannabis plants found growing on rural and suburban properties. Police invite anyone who believes that they have growers using their land, or who thinks they have located a cannabis growing plot, to contact Police via the local Police station, or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Toxic algae present
The 24 brides who took part in last year's Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show.
Toxic algae is starting to show up in some of Marlborough’s streams and rivers. Parents and dog owners are warned that it poses a health risk to children and animals. The algae is present in parts of the Taylor, Omaka and Wairau rivers. Council has placed warning signs at some of the river access points. In humans, contact with toxic algae causes vomiting, diarrhoea and skin irritation.

Helping out from ‘house to house’ By Aimee O’Hagan
Every month, families from around NZ travel an average of 210km to get from their homes to a Ronald McDonald House; a roof over their heads while their child is in hospital. There’s no question that these families need as much support as they can get, and Blenheim locals Rachel Haigh, Nicole Baker, and Jen Horsley are doing their part to make a positive difference. The three women are among hundreds of others from around the country who will soon be taking part in House to House 2020; an initiative which will see them run, walk, cycle, or even swim 210km over the month of March. Before doing so, participants have to raise $210 each to go towards providing families with a night’s accommodation, toiletries, staple food items for a home cooked meal, and other essentials. According to Jen, the idea to take part in House to House came to her when newborn daughter Frankie was flown to hospital last year. “Having a place to call home close to the hospital, family meals cooked by amazing

volunteers, and the support of others in a similar situation is an absolute godsend,” Jen says. So far, the three have raised over $2400 between them for the Ronald McDonald House Charities organisation, but they still want to obtain as much as they can before the cut off date at the end of February. Convinced to take part by Jen, Rachel and Nicole have their own motivations for helping out. “[The money helps] keep families together while their child is needing specialist medical care,” Nicole says.
“Getting fit is an added bonus!” “Having this service available allows the parents/caregivers [and other family members] the opportunity to be there supporting their child,” Rachel adds. “Helping a worthy charity raise funds is definitely a feel good moment.” The trio aim to make up their kilometres by going on walks together and exercising whenever they can. Here in Marlborough there are many families which open their hearts and homes to children who are placed into foster care. Supporting these families is the organisation Foster Hope NZ, and here in Marlborough it’s coordinated by Blenheim woman and foster parent herself, Leonie McLauchlan. Leonie has been a foster parent for almost 25 years, and in the Foster Hope NZ coordinator’s role for three years. It’s something she feels passionate about, so when it was announced recently that the organisation was named a finalist in the 2020 New Zealander of the Year Awards, it came as a “pleasant surprise”. Foster Hope was nominated in the Mitre 10 Community of the Year Category, chosen as one of three finalists, with the winner to be announced later this month. “Receiving this nomination reflects the incredible support our volunteers, local businesses, members of the public, social workers and foster families provide,” Leonie says. “Foster Hope NZ was formed in 2010 to support foster children who often arrived at new placements with nothing but their clothes on their backs and belongings in a rubbish bag. Last year alone I put together 80 backpacks for children uplifted for emergency care situations and new placements, and at Christmas we

He korero no te Kaunihera o Wairau NEWS FROM THE MARLBOROUGH DISTRICT COUNCIL
All aboard - new bus service trials begin The new Blenheim to Renwick and Blenheim commuter bus services began on Monday and Marlburians are encouraged to jump on board. The trial services provide people with greater transport options and complement the existing Blenheim to Picton and Blenheim bus services. The Blenheim to Renwick service operates from Monday to Saturday, and runs four daily circuits on weekdays; one early morning, one mid-morning, one midafternoon and one early-evening. It will also run two circuits on a Saturday; one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon. The new Blenheim commuter service operates Monday to Friday and provides two simultaneous services to Maxwell Road, Redwoodtown, Witherlea and Taylor Pass Road. The morning services depart at
7.30 am and 8.00 am. The evening services depart at 5.15 pm and 5.45 pm. Wairau-Awatere Ward Councillor Cynthia Brooks says the new services are fantastic for Renwick and Woodbourne residents and for Blenheim commuters wishing to take the bus rather than drive to work. “The new services are an 18-month trial. Through the public survey we ran last year, I know many residents are passionate about improving public transport in Marlborough. It’s now up to our community to support the new services so they become a long term transport option.” Timetables including fares and route information are available on Council’s website: www.marlborough.govt.nz/ services/parking-roads-and-transport Hard copies can also be picked up from Council reception.
Positive Ageing – Advocacy Services Older people are sometimes reluctant to voice a complaint because they don’t like to ‘make a fuss’. It’s a good to be concerned for the wellbeing of a dependent elderly person who is relying on health and disability services provided by professionals. The Health and Disability Commissioner’s Office has a free and confidential
advocacy service where a trained advocate is available. There is a Nelson-based advocate who deals with Marlborough cases and travels here as required. For more information please contact Jacqui Gough Ph: 03 544 4116 or 0800 555 050. Age Concern Marlborough also provides an advocate. You can contact Catherine Donnelly on Ph: 03 579 3457.
Environment Plan decisions released The Proposed Marlborough Environment Plan decisions were released today, following a powhiri (welcome) at Omaka Marae. The plan brings three of the region’s major management plans, the Marlborough Regional Policy Statement, the Marlborough Sounds Resource Management Plan and the Wairau-Awatere Resource Management Plan, into a single document and sets out the rules around appropriate activities in Marlborough’s urban, rural and coastal environments. More than 1300 submissions were made on the plan, covering more than 17,000 individual submission points in support of, or in opposition to, the notified provisions. Hearings for the plan started in November 2017 at Omaka Marae and finished in April last year. The release of the decisions on the Plan mark the culmination of over two years’ work by the panel, submitters and Council staff.
Mayor John Leggett said the plan’s release is a ground breaking development among local authorities in New Zealand. “Others are looking to us now. It’s a new way of bringing documents together into a single resource management document,” he said. The members of the Hearings Panel who oversaw the process are Trevor Hook (Chairperson), Councillor David Oddie, Councillor Jamie Arbuckle, Ron Crosby, Shonagh Kenderdine and Rawiri Faulkner. Former Councillor Laressa Shenfield was on the Hearings Panel but resigned in November 2018. The Sun Music opinion Not impressed with closing act at Wine and Food... Eden Kavannagh would have been much better.
Thanks but no thanks Huge thanks to the Marlborough District Council who, after I’d worked a 12 hour nightshift on Wine & Food festival night, decided to cut Muller Road’s water off with less than 5 minutes notice when I awoke on the Sunday afternoon. It’s not like we peasants have anywhere to be on Sunday or needed any ‘proper’ warning. I bet my rates pay someone handsomely for such stellar communication.
Pool vs dam...
Share the path??? If you are cycling down Taylor river, it is far more sensible for a cyclist to go around walkers, kids, dogs and scooters than it is to ding your bell and wait for people to move. It is only grass, I’m sure any bike can handle that kind of ‘off road’ instead of muttering and dirty looks when kids or dogs don’t move. Sometimes walkers have headphones in too.
Fishing licence advice Fishing? Be aware that your new licence does not allow fishing everywhere, despite what the document says! But wait; there’s more. The FREE ‘Backcountry Endorsement’ can ‘only’ be obtained when one logs on to the Fish and Game website, and ‘only’ there tick the box which automatically allows you to freely fish! Thanks cycling Don of F&G, great advice and PR. We had absolutely no idea. Saw heaps, caught zilch!
Get on with building Labour and National declaring how great their housing policies are. Yet history shows neither have up-scaled building houses over the last forty odd years. In fact selling off state houses and military rentals, have been in the thousands. Not since 1950s -60s governments seriously built up state house stocks! Neither. National nor Labour take high ground blaming the other. They are responsible for our housing shortage and high rents! The new generations struggle to find a house can blame them for this situation. Enough talk get on with building! No more political bull just do the job.
Please. If I need to child proof my pool then why don’t vineyards have to do the same around their dams. Come on council play the game fair for one and all.
Maiden name Re Maiden Name. Fair enough, but surely if you knew and kept in contact with a person you would know of a passing. I think it is very rude of people that attend funerals but never bothered to visit them when alive.
Be a tidy kiwi To the person eating pizza in his car while waiting for someone to come out of Pizza Hutt, we saw you open your car door and throw the empty pizza box under your car and drive away. How difficult is it to get your lazy butt out of your car and put it in the rubbish bin a few steps away? Don’t leave it to others to clean up after you.
Blenheim. Sunniest Town in NZ !!!! That would shut up the nit pickers.
Re Rubbish and recycling in Blenheim. We work hard and have to put up with bad public for minimum wage. We don’t get anything else at all and we work hard all day long so please we need positive talk back thanks and gud on you bros.
Re: EU RE EU!!!! yes I did realise I had put the wrong letter, it was meant to be the UN dictating to us. We have become a PC country.
Thank you A big thanks to the helpful staff at our local Mitre10 store. Both Jess in the Kitchen area and Ross (from Picton) in the Trades section. It made a big difference to get good advice and practical help. Ross was so kind to help with pieces of wood I needed for my shelf. Nothing was too much trouble for him- really made my day!
Whats the story? I too was annoyed by TV1 omitting our daily temp and I changed to TV3. “What’s the story” 14 Feb is mistaken. TV3 does give daily highs for Blenheim as well as forecast highs for the next 4 days.
Near misses
GREAT JOB! Well done to the contractors who removed the two old toilets in High St, Picton, & erected the new block all in less than 2 weeks. We need to acknowledge more often for a job well done.
Happy for bus service
Overgrown Trail Riverlands Bike Trail. When is the overgrown, dry grass going to be cut down there? Has been like it for months. A real fire hazard with the amount of trains going past.
Heads up to the ladies at Whitcoulls who are coping with the extra work load and being so helpful and still smiling.
I had no idea what was going on after seeing a Ritchies bus driving through Woodbourne past my house this week. But once I found out it’s a new service and got the timetable from the Sun I reckon I’ll use it often. More should! And if you don’t, don’t grumble that there’s no public transport outside of Blenheim.

Dangerous U-Turns
‘Near misses’ (14/2) New Renwick Rd/Richardson Ave. You’re wrong. You were turning right on the ‘give way’ from Battys and I was proceeding straight ahead after my ‘stop sign’ from Richardson. When New Renwick road is clear I have right of way (you turned and almost hit me). Right turning traffic from Battys always gives way to straight traffic proceeding across to Battys. I checked with the police. Please give way as you will cause an accident. Thanx
Keep up the good work
Sunniest Town
Positivity goes along way
Keep It Simply Safe... Yikes. Yet another horror near miss T-bone accident at Morrington & Weld due to a highly dangerous (& illegal) U-turn manoeuvre. Local School, Council & Traffic Authorities are well aware of this ongoing problem in Witherlea but obviously don’t care. Local Residents though, do not want to see or hear of the senseless maiming (or worse) of a Witherlea School Pupil. So come on. If your children are unable to walk, bike or scoot to school at Witherlea, use the logical alternative of a 3 point turn further up Morrington or simply drop them off in McKenzie St. Oh, & U-turns at Weld & Solway are dumb too. Keep Them Safe.
New Seat Thank you to MDC for the new seat at Scott Street by the Muller Road dairy bus stop.
Passing lanes Nelson - Blenheim speed review. Speeding drivers will always speed. Lowering speed limit is just going to frustrate the law abiding drivers. I often see slower drivers or trucks causing long lines of traffic along this stretch of road. There’s just very limited passing opportunities because of the nature of the road. PUT in some good passing lanes.

Seeing one of my team members named as Harcourts No 1 Property Manager in the South Island and having the whole team in the top 10. Very special.

Four seasons shanghai restaurant
Just when you thought t a ke away m e a l s we r e quick and convenient, local restaurant owner Bu-nga Krataitong introduced an online ordering system for her restaurants Bamboo Garden and The Lemongrass. Bu-nga says she is always “looking to the future” when it comes to the technology she uses, and online ordering was the next step forward. “This is a new system for us and we are welcoming feedback, but so far it’s been positive and I hope our customers find it to be an easier option for ordering their takeaway,” she says. How it works; simply visit the restaurants’ websites and along the top there is a tab ‘Order Online’. Click and scroll through the menu, selecting the dishes you wish to order along the way.
Once complete go to the shopping cart and complete the order. It’s that simple! The order is then accepted by the restaurant chefs and they quickly get to work on preparing the order. “Of course you can still phone or call in to order, but with the online ordering it can speed up the process,” Bu-nga says. Bamboo Garden Restaurant is now also offering regular chef specials, giving diners the opportunity to try new and exciting dishes. From classic Chinese to Thai and Japanese dishes, Bamboo Garden Restaurant embraces the richness and diversity of Asian cuisine. With their top chefs from all over Asia and their commitment to using the highest quality and freshest of ingredients, the menu is sure to deliver new and exciting taste to your palate.
Try a slow cooked lamb shank, sizzling pork, a tasty curry both mild or hot, or even a vegetarian option and finish off your meal with a cocktail, beer or wine. There are also children’s options available. Whether a couple’s night out or a big group function, Bamboo Garden’s 110 + seater restaurant can cater for them all. It’s also the perfect location to host fundraising dinners. Located on the outskirts of Blenheim’s CBD, it is just a minute’s walk from the town centre. So come and enjoy a truly authentic Asian meal in a sophisticated yet relaxing atmosphere where our team of friendly attentive staff awaits with a warm welcome. Book a table by phoning or going online and order from Bamboo Garden Restaurant and The Lemongrass.

Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life? Not one person – just anyone that has a dream and then does what it takes to achieve it!! What was the last photo you took? Before and after of renovations. What thing do you really wish you could buy right now? A launch to travel the Marlborough sounds.
Favourite programme currently watching? I don’t tend to watch TV. I am more of a Netflix movie person or listen to music. If you had to flee the country, where would you choose to live? There is no other place that I have travelled to, that I would want to live permanently. Maybe, just travel the world until I found that place. It would be somewhere waterfront away from the crowds.

Halberg Awards celebrate the known and unknown alike It was a fascinating Halberg Awards last week. Israel Adesanya’s speech taking aim at New Zealand’s tall poppy syndrome was a ballsy play considering many mainstream sport fans would have not known anything about the UFC champion until he received his sportsman of
the year award. Ignorance of UFC does not mean Adesanya is not deserving of the award because he is. To be a world champion in mixed martial arts is a truly global feat. Far more people compete in MMA than cricket, rugby, netball, V8 SuperCars etc.
Take nothing away from Kiwi driving ace Scott McLaughlin who dominated the V8s last year but it’s an achievement done in an Australasian fish bowl. The world champion Silver Ferns, won the team and supreme award after their form-reversing final win last year.
It goes to show the fine line between success and failure. Their one goal win was enough to see them and wonder-coach Noeline Taurua lauded with accolades. Meanwhile, spare a thought for the Black Caps who drew their World Cup final with England in
Richard achieves gold star status By Celeste Alexander
What do a Mitsibishi Evo and a Datsun 1200 have in common? They both starred in a recent championship rally event and came away with top podium finishes thanks to the skill of their drivers, locals Richard Bateman and Steve Cattermole. Richard and Steve, members of the Marlborough Car Club, competed at the New Zealand Hillclimb Championship event held at Port Waikato last Weekend. MotorSport NZ’s Gold Star Hillclimb Championship is a ClubSport championship comprising of four qualifying rounds run by member clubs in both the North and South Island, and a final round which alternates between the islands each year. The outright NZ Hillclimb Champion is awarded the title of NZ Gold Star Hillclimb Champion, reflecting the championship’s status as one of MotorSport NZ’s Gold Star championships. Richard won the New Zealand
Hillclimb Gold Star Championship after completing the final round of the champs after a closely fought battle against second place getter, Michael McLean in his WRX. Richard managed to score the maximum points across the championship to become the Hillclimb champion. He will receive his Gold Star at the Motorsport New Zealand Awards Dinner in Wellington in May. “I’m absolutely rapt to have it,” he says. “It means a lot after having strived so hard to win. “I’ve had a lot of great feedback which makes you feel good, but I think it will really sink in when we’re at the awards and receive the medal; it will make it more real. “I’m looking forward to that, and I’ll be in a suit for a change,” he laughs. “And not a race or wet suit either.” Steve also performed extremely well in his Datsun with a 599.17 points overall lead in the 2WD category, as well as in the Gold Star Championship, coming home on the podium in third.
Marlborough Car Club members, Steve Cattermole and Richard Bateman, are pictured celebrating after their incredible wins at last weekend’s New Zealand Hillclimb Championship. Photo provided.
For Steve, it’s been a huge achievement which has “taken a while to sink in”, he laughs. “It’s a bit surreal to be honest. At my age it’s probably one of few chances to win at a NZ title; a bit of a one-off deal,” he says. “But I’m really stoked.” Steve’s Datsun will be semi-retiring his Datsun from rallying this year as
it will be 50-years-old, but not before he competes one more time in it for the Golden 1200 Hillclimb event in two weeks. However speedway fans may still be able to see it in action when the car club holds a fundraising race on Friday, February 28 where they will be selling rides in a rally car around the track.
every conceivable way yet only have a runners-up medal and the memories of what might have been that still bothers me to this day. A run here or there and the Halberg Awards would have been their night. That is sport in a nutshell.
