Surprise wedding

By Celeste Alexander

Imagine being proposed to by your loved one on one of the most romantic days of the year – Valentine’s Day, then opening an invitation to your own wedding which would also take place that day. It sounds like a fairytale romance

but for local couple, Daniel and Liana Prictor, it was their real-life wedding day. The couple who are parents to two sons, Odin (3) and Percy (6 months), had been casually talking about their wedding, but little did Liana know Daniel had planned a surprise for her. Continued on page 2.

Liana and Daniel Prictor were married on Valentine’s Day in a surprise wedding organised by the groom, with the help of family and friends. Photos by Karmyn Ingram.

Continued from page 1. Daniel says he had always thought having a surprise wedding would be a nice way to get married, so before Christmas he began hatching his clever plan with the help of family and friends. For Liana, Valentine’s Day was meant to be “just another day” without a fuss and no gifts. “We had discussed it and decided it would just be an ordinary day, and we wouldn’t do gifts or anything,” Liana says. “We woke up in the morning and got up to get our toddler ready. “Daniel took Odin out with him, with the cover story that they were going to his work. A friend had messaged me to organise breakfast that morning, saying she had an announcement to make,” she says. Liana’s friend insisted they all be blindfolded, but took theirs off leaving Liana in the dark with what was about to take place. “We got in the car and drove around for 15 minutes. I was imagining we were heading out to the Vines Village for breakfast,” Liana laughs. “They pulled up at Pollard Park, still with me blindfolded, and walked me through to the rotunda.

“Then Daniel lifted the blindfold and all I could see was my friends all bolting away.” Daniel took Liana’s hand and got down on one knee to propose. After a moment of shock and realisation, Liana said yes to the love of her life. The couple then sat down to a glass of bubbles which was when Liana saw an envelope sitting on the table. In it was an invitation to her own wedding! “Daniel asked ‘what do you think?’ then we laughed. I was still in shock but laughing at how amazing yet crazy the whole thing was,” Liana says. Liana’s mother was waiting nearby to take her to a fitting for her wedding gown, made by Bernadette Thomas. “I had talked about dresses before so Daniel knew the style I liked,” Liana says. The couple then saw the Minister who would carry out the ceremony before Liana was whisked away to have her hair and makeup done. The ceremony took place in a beautiful backyard setting on the property of a close family friend, with their close family and friends watching on including Daniel’s siblings who travelled from all over the world for

the wedding. The reception was held at the Clubs of Marlborough main hall, decorated by Liana’s friends at Glamour Weddings & Events. “The most amazing part of all of this was how many people came together to make this happen,” Liana says. “Daniel had got into my

Pinterest account where I’d saved wedding ideas. Like I said in my vows, if Daniel can put this much effort into our wedding, imagine the effort he will put into our marriage. “Never did I expect a wedding on the same day as my engagement, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. “It was so special,” she smiles.

Acting workshops with Peter Hambleton this weekend One of New Zealand’s finest actors, Peter Hambleton, will be at the Marlborough Girls’ College drama room this Saturday February 29 and Sunday March 1 to hold a collection of workshops exploring acting techniques for both onstage and onscreen acting. The cost to attend one workshop is $30; two workshops, $55; three workshops, $80; and four workshops, $100. Funds raised via these public workshops will help fund Peter to work with students at MGC and MBC for free. There are still a few places available, so for more information or to sign up, contact Shalom Del’Monte-Aberhart at peaceprincessrose@gmail.com or on 0276441513.

By Aimee O’Hagan

On Saturday, 26 brave souls from around Marlborough gathered at Skydive Abel Tasman in Motueka to complete the jump of their lives: whether it was with the motivation of pushing themselves beyond their limits and out of their comfort zones, to feel a thrilling rush of adrenaline and the wind through their hair, or to simply do some good for young people in the community – or maybe all three. They were all participating in Drop for Youth Marlborough, an initiative raising money for the regional Graeme Dingle Foundation. In the lead up to the skydive, the group of ‘droppers’ – which included real estate agents, teachers, a 91 year-old pensioner, yours truly (Sun reporter, Aimee O’Hagan), representatives from wineries and the aquaculture industry, and others – were feeling a range of emotions; from excitement to nervousness, terror to determination. For me, the hardest part of the jump was when the instructor opened the plane door. Looking down at the world below, it was hard not to feel absolutely petrified. Luckily, the feeling didn’t last. There was no time to really feel the panic; five seconds later and we had already leaped out of the plane. After returning to base following the jump, I could not get the earto-ear grin off my face. Others seemed to be exactly the same - regardless of what they had been feeling beforehand. As a collective, the jumpers raised over $68,000 prior to the day of the event.

Wither Hills tracks closed - fire danger The hot dry summer has forced the closure of most tracks in the Wither Hills Farm Park, including the Mountain Bike Park. Due to the ‘very high to extreme’ fire risk conditions within the park, walkers and runners are asked to stay on the lower tracks around the town boundary only, and not to venture up the gullies or ridge paths. Cyclists are asked to avoid the Mountain Bike Park as this area would be particularly dangerous in the event of a fire. Signs advising of the track closures are being installed at the Farm Park on Monday. The closure of these areas will apply at all times of the day.

The Sun reporter, Aimee O’Hagan, was one of 26 participants to go skydiving on Saturday as part of Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough’s initiative, Drop for Youth Marlborough 2020.

The tally is continuing to climb, with the participants’ Givealittle pages still open for an additional three weeks. All money raised is going towards funding Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough programmes such as Kiwi Can, Stars, and Career Navigator – positively impacting over 3000 Marlborough young people, from five year-olds to year 13 school leavers. To make a donation before this year’s Drop for Youth initiative finally comes to a close, visit https://givealittle.co.nz/event/ dyf-marlborough. Fired up for quiz By Frances Chin

Is your trivia knowledge anything but trivial? Then grab some mates and come along to the Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade’s quiz night. This is the perfect occasion to catch up with some friends while testing your basic knowledge. A barbeque will be provided to fuel your brain as you puzzle over questions. The proceeds of the night will go to an amazing cause, as the Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade is sending firefighters Liam, Regan, and Keegan to attend the 2020 Sky Tower Stair Challenge. This is the first year the Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade will be sending a team to the event. Firefighters in the Sky Tower Stair Challenge must climb to

the top of the Sky Tower, which has 51 flights of stairs, with 1103 steps. In addition to this, they have wear 25 kilograms of fire-fighter gear. All proceeds of the Sky Tower Stair Challenge go to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ. As 6 Kiwis on average are diagnosed with blood cancer daily, this is an incredibly worthy cause. So go along, and support local firefighters as they fight blood cancer by climbing the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. The quiz takes place on Friday February 28, and will be held at the Picton Fire Station. Start time is 6.30. Teams can be between 4-6 people, and those interested can confirm via the VFB’s Facebook page. Entry is $5 per person.

The Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade will be hosting a quiz night on Friday, February 28, at 6.30pm. All proceeds will go towards Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ.

Council plans So far in 2020, Marlborough District Council has received applications for subdivision resource consents enabling 263 residential lots to be built on, representing several years’ worth of new builds for Blenheim. They include provision for 131 new homes on Alabama Road, 56 at Rose Manor on Old Renwick Road, 40 on Turnbull Drive at the-

Boulevard on Taylor development, and 15 in South Street. Kainga Ora - Homes and Communities has also applied for resource consent for 30 units. Council Chief Executive Mark Wheeler says the Council will continue to work with landowners and developers to provide support to assist the progress of the larger developments.

The Proposed Marlborough Environment Plan (PMEP) decisions document was released last Thursday, bringing together the region’s major management plans into a single document. More than 1,300 submissions were made on the plan and submitters made 386 appearances over 54 days of hearings. This plan brings three of the region’s major management plans, the Marlborough Regional Policy Statement, the Marlborough Sounds Resource Management Plan and the Wairau-Awatere

Resource Management Plan, into a single document and sets out the rules around appropriate activities in Marlborough’s urban, rural and coastal environments. More than 1300 submissions were made on the plan, covering more than 17,000 individual submission points in support of, or in opposition to, the notified provisions. Hearings for the plan started in November 2017 at Omaka Marae and finished in April last year. Mayor John Leggett said the plan’s release is a milestone for

Marlborough. “This is the first fully integrated resource management plan produced by a council to emerge intact. It’s a first for New Zealand and an achievement that shows our region as a leader in environmental planning,” Mayor Leggett said. The decision document is now subject to an appeal process. Submitters may appeal the decisions to the Environment Court by Friday, April 3 2020. Further details of the appeal process can be found on Council’s website.

Half marathon for friend battling cancer By Celeste Alexander

Anything is possible when you have the right people to support you. This couldn’t be any truer for Renwick Kindergarten teacher, Jo Leahy, who is a loving friend to many but is also facing a battle of her own. Jo is described by many in the local community as “someone special” and who has taught many young children during her time teaching in Marlborough. Sadly Jo became very ill last year with a rare and inoperable bile duct cancer, Cholangiocarcinoma, and now has a tumour on her liver which is growing at an aggressive rate. Because she has touched the lives of so many local families it was noticed when she was absent from the kindergarten and very soon after, the community rallied around the mother of two upon hearing the news. One of these people was Leanne Broughton. Leanne, who is proud to call Jo a close and personal friend, met Jo when her own two children attended Renwick Kindergarten. There were times when Jo was a support for Leanne’s family in need; one time in particular when Leanne’s daughter, Bella, who has Type 1 diabetes, was admitted to hospital. “The first person who came to see us was Jo which meant so much to us to have that love and support,” Leanne says. “It was so nice at the time and was just another reason why we love her as it takes someone special to care so much about others.” Now Leanne is in that supportive role

for Jo, and is one of many friends walking alongside Jo through her cancer journey. Wanting to do something to help support Jo and her family, Leanne decided to compete in the 10km Christchurch Motorway Half Marathon, which takes place this Sunday, while raising money. “When I found out Jo wasn’t well I began wondering what I could do. It was one day while running up the Wither Hills that the idea to run a half marathon came to me. “Two days later I saw the Christchurch marathon and decided then that I’d dedicate it to Jo. “And I’m so pleased that I’m doing it; Jo has had a huge impact on me and my children and not only is she an amazing person, but it’s an uplifting feeling knowing I’m doing this to help someone,” Leanne says. Leanne’s goal is to complete the half marathon in 1hr 34minutes. This will be her fourth half marathon. “We’re hoping to have fun girls’ night with our good friends Sheryl and Ainsley before the marathon on Sunday,” Leanne says. Leanne started a Givealittle page titled ‘Running for Jo’ and in the nearly a month it’s been running, it’s received over $10,000 in donations. The page closes on March 4 – www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/ running-for-jo. This money will go to Jo’s family as they support Jo through her chemotherapy and numerous hospital visits. “It’s really humbling,” Jo says. “Especially to know there’s some really beautiful people in my life who are supporting me and my family.

Leanne Broughton (left) is running a half marathon in Christchurch this weekend for her friend Jo Leahy (right), a well known and loved teacher at Renwick Kindergarten, who is battling a rare form of cancer. They’re pictured with two of Jo’s youngest fans, Corban Broughton and Polly Bell.

“We’ve had meals brought to us, donations of grocery vouchers from coin collections held, I have friends who come to sit with me during chemotherapy… the outpouring of love

is incredible. “So thank you to everyone for being with me on my cancer journey. It means more than you will ever know,” Jo says.

He hasn’t offered violence to anyone in this particular existence so let us, for Pete’s sake, get to watch him demonstrate

Biking everywhere Bike to work? Not us! My wife, Robyn, and I are both retired. But we still bike everywhere. We have just completed the iconic Alps to Ocean (A2O) cycle trail for the third time. Actually, it was third time lucky because our previous two attempts have failed due to weather and trail washouts. The photo shows us at the trail end in Oamaru. Biking around Blenheim we always wear matching hi-viz jackets and some

Blenheim shopkeepers call us the Yellow Pair. Robyn and I are e-bike fans and use them to bike the Alps to Ocean and all over Marlborough. We could not have done it any other way. One of our favourite rides is along the Wairau stop bank from Spring Creek to Selmes Road. It’s just one of many great rides around Marlborough. Now in our mid-seventies, every day counts. In the 1960s he created Brayshaw Museum Park. Festival champions diversity By Frances Chin

The Marlborough Multicultural Festival will be taking place on Saturday March 7. This event exists as a celebration of the wide variety of different, wonderful places Marlburians hail from. There will be cultural performances from various nationalities, and art and food from Japan, India, and more. “The Multicultural Festival embraces cultural diversity and unites the community in a celebration and sharing of a variety of cultural dance, food, ethnic craft and performance,” says Migrant Services Manager, Margaret Western. “The festival, which acknowledges Race Relations Day, has become

a key family event for Marlborough. Not simply because it is fun and colourful, but because it embraces our growing diversity and provides the opportunity for our multicultural community to showcase their culture and feel they have a visible and valued place here. Long term Marlburians too, can see the richness of the ethnic mix of people who call Marlborough home.” Ruth Hayward is someone who is part of the multicultural community in Marlborough. From Lae, East Sepik, Papua New Guinea, Ruth, her kiwi husband and their daughter moved to Blenheim in January. They are settling in well. “I think it’s good,” says Ruth. “The people are

lovely. My daughter is doing really well.” “Papua New Guinea loves Kiwis. We are both Pacific Islands, so we all love each other.” However, the Marlborough weather is a bit different to the warmth of Papua New Guinea. “When the wind blows, I have to put on a jacket.” Papua New Guinea is an incredibly diverse place, with Polynesians, Melanesians, and Papuans all living together. There are over 800 languages spoken, like Motu; a Polynesian language similar to Maori. An example of Papua New Guinea’s diversity is Burie Lilly, another Papua New Guinean who moved to Marlborough. Burie is “from a multicultural family,” as her two children

have a Hungarian father, but were born in Papua New Guinea. “They’re half Papua New Guinean, half Hungarian, made in New Zealand.” “They don’t think like me. New Zealand is their home. It’s lovely to see” Although Ruth and Burie can speak English fluently, they enjoy speaking Pidgin to each other; one of Papua New Guinea’s many languages. They exchange stories of home, and chat about their lives and families. “To come to a place like the Multicultural Centre, and meet people from different worlds, talking and sharing similar struggles, the support we get here is phenomenal,” says Burie. “Margaret is like family.”

Riding that mental high Brendon Adams may have just clocked 8000km around New Zealand all in an effort to raise awareness for mental health, but he is determined the journey continues. He talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about the adventure, what motivates him and his plans to go beyond Australasia later this year. Blenheim businessman, Brendon Adams, is fast becoming a mind over matter person. A year ago he rode more than 4000km across Australia on a hired Harley Davidson bike to raise funds for Lifeline and now he’s just returned from doing the same thing in his own backyard. Brendon, the managing director of Laser Electrical Blenheim, said it was a thrill to ride the length of the country - and a little bit more on his own bike. “I’d sit there and I’d think this is such a cool job, I wish I could do it every day.” He and 20 others completed the ride to help raise funds for the Lifeline Foundation and Beyond Blue. The ride, dubbed ’Monkey Off Your Back’, has helped Brendon raise more than $14,000 so far and he hopes that figure would push $20,000 over the next six weeks. He says preparing for the physical side of the three week journey was important. “I needed time on the bike,” he says. “Short trips to Nelson, Christchurch and just riding it to work really helped. “Plus I drank lots of whiskey to get into that bikie mode,” he jokes. “I’ve been filled with gratitude and humbled about the amount of donations I have received so far, it’s been incredible. He says his new Indian Road Master was ideal for the journey. “1800cc with all the bells and whistles, even an ashtray - not that I used that much. “Doing this Burt Munro Challenge, I had to get an Indian. “It’s like a couch on wheels.”

Brendon plans to head to Auckland in late April to present a cheque with all the money raised which he hoped would exceed $60,000. “Getting involved with a like-minded group of people, who have been through a mental health battle or seen it first hand, was great when we were travelling around the country. “To have people come up to us with big smiles on their faces and thank us for the work that we are doing was incredible.” Brendon was also a guest on the Newstalk ZB radio show called the Nutters Club where he took calls from people around the country on the subject of mental wellbeing. “A lot of us are still riding on a bit of a high. “Every day was so full-on from 6am to 9pm and we are feeling really good about what we did. “I had to try to get some sleep since I’ve been back because I was starting to lose function.”

“Life is too short, look after your mates, it’s OK to not be OK and it’s OK to ask for help” Brendon had his own seven-year mental health battle which he was able to overcome. He says it was great to return the favour and show several Australian riders around New Zealand while also travelling some unfamiliar roads himself.

“It was great to get to know the Aussies even more after last year and realise they are in the same boat. “There are the same issues there about it being under-funded. “I am someone who knows New Zealand by the state highways and major cities but we went off the beaten track to some of the most beautiful untouched areas of the country like the Whanganui River Road that leads to Mt Ruapehu National Park was amazing and the ride through the Kaikoura leg was an eye-opener for the Aussies as well. “The back-blocks of Wanaka and Alexandra was also very nice. He says the common theme on the trip was trying to encourage men to be more open when communicating, especially when it came to feelings and emotions. “Men are renowned for not

wanting to talk about things but a theme was that those tough guys were starting to open up more which is a positive.” Brendon says he has little faith in the public health system and encouraged others to look for their own practitioners. “There is more than just anxiety and depression on the spectrum of mental health. “The only cure in the public health system seemed to come at the bottom of a pill bottle. “They are the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. It’s totally under-funded and under-resourced.” Brendon says he is keen to do the same ride next year “because there are so many places left on the table”. In August he will do a 15-day ride from Anchorage to Seattle. “None of us thought that this cause would get to this level in our

wildest dreams,” he says. “Initially it was just a couple of mates saying ‘I’ve had a guts full, let’s go for a ride and clear our heads. “It all started on 110cc postie bikes from Melbourne to Surfer’s Paradise and that was the last time anyone has ridden anything like that.” He says clearly progress is being made. “There were ups and downs on this trip from broken trailers to people going missing, accommodation failures, weather bombs, road closures but it was great to be with a bunch of people that didn’t see the problems and only saw the way forward. “Life is too short, look after your mates, it’s OK to not be OK and it’s OK to ask for help - that’s the message we are trying to get across.”

Rai Valley A & P Show Saturday March 7

A great day out in the country

The Sheep and Dog sections have been expanded this year with new classes added, including the addition of the Valais Black Nose sheep.

There’s no better event which brings town and country together than an A&P Show. Every year the Rai Valley community welcomes people of all ages to enjoy a day in the country for the annual A&P Show which takes place on Saturday, March 7. There will be a touch of tradition and modern day practices featured throughout the event as well as entertainment and sections for people to experience. Vintage displays, wood chopping, trade stalls of machinery through to arts and crafts, bow and arrow shooting are just a few of the things on offer. Take the children along to enjoy the variety of Sturgeon Amusements rides and sideshows, the animal nursery and fancy dress pet, plus so much more. Organisers say they have expanded the Sheep and Dog sections this year with new classes added, including the addition of the Valais Black Nose sheep. “We have the come-back of dog trials at the Rai Valley A&P Show this year. Enter on the day and win some fantastic prizes.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Rai Valley Show

“The horse section now includes InHand, Future Stars, Show Jumping and HOY qualifying classes,” they say. For those who enjoy the art and crafts, the Indoor Sections have extended to include more of these including new vegetable, fruit and baking classes. The popular BMX/MotoX course display is back again by popular demand, and of course the highly entertaining ‘Rai Challenge’ will once again take place. This challenge is unique to the Rai Valley A&P Show where adults and children carry a pig or possum through an obstacle course. The adult’s competition kicks off at 10.15am and the children’s from 1pm, immediately after the Grand Parade has finished (12.30-1pm). Another highlight for families will be the Harcourts Really Young Farmer Competition which is back with new and improved tasks. This is free entry for ages five-14 years, held from 10.30am-12.30pm. Prize giving will take place at the end of the Grand Parade. And what agricultural show would be complete without a giant pumpkin

growing competition? “Our giant pumpkin judging begins at 10.30am followed with a Pumpkin Roll down the Hill competition held later in the afternoon, once the horse classes are completed,” organisers say. The Nelson North Country Club Bar will be open from 11am through until 8pm, along with live band NINE95 for entertainment. Gate Admission: $7 per adult; $3 child (5-16yrs). Under five-years free. Schedules available online: www. raivalleyshow.co.nz or email Andrea at raivalleyshow@live.com There are also small bales of hay for sale for $6/bale, with all proceeds going towards the Rai Valley A & P Association, contact Andrea for more details. “A huge Thank you to all the local businesses who continue to support our show through trade and sponsorship of prizes. Look out for our sponsors banner and signs on show day, and help support the businesses that support our show. “Come on down to the Rai Valley A&P Show for a true rural show atmosphere where town and country comes together for a great day out.”

Unique wedding vows As you commit to a life shared with another, it’s always important to find the right words. Some like to be serious. “(Name), with all my love, I take you to be my wife/husband. I will love you through good and the bad, through joy and the sorrow. I will try to be understanding, and to trust in you completely. Together we will face all of life’s experiences and share one another’s dreams and goals. I promise I will be your equal partner in a loving, honest relationship, for as long as we both shall live.” While some like to be more humorous. “I vow to wash if you’ll dry, just so we can be together in the kitchen, laughing, all night - every night. I want us to grow old and crusty together, to shake our collective fists at teenagers, and to talk endlessly about the old days when things were better, cheaper, and generally more wholesome.”

The wedding ring is an ancient tradition, dating back to the Ancient Egyptians who made them out of reed and hemp. Nowadays rings are made of more solid stuff. But, with so many different designs to choose from, how can you be sure which is right? If you’re uncertain, the Solitaire ring is a classic choice. This is the archetypical engagement ring; an elegant band with a diamond in the middle. This style can be easily modified too, as the band can house nearly every type and shape of stone.

Sweet treats for weddings Who doesn’t love candy! Jelly beans, giant lollipops, cotton candy and pineapple lumps – it makes the mouth water just thinking about it. Fortunately, candy is becoming a popular addition to weddings and a great option for guests to fill their own ‘goodie’ bags. Decorate a table and fill jars with different types of candy, and provide paper bags and tongs for guests to use. To change it up a little, add a section for donuts decorated in brightly coloured icing, include some extra jars with home baked cookies, and bags of coloured candy floss. Make your own popcorn and create different flavours for light snacks, put together beautiful cheeseboards with sweet chutneys, or even have a chocolate or cheese fondue with fresh fruit to dip. The options are endless but one thing is for certain; these all create a fun way for friends and family to come together.

Naomi’s Scottish journey By Aimee O’Hagan

At 6am yesterday morning, Blenheim local Naomi O’Hagan grabbed her suitcase and headed out to Marlborough Airport. When she was there, she checked in her bag, collected her boarding pass, got on a plane, and officially set off on her journey across the world. The 17 year-old is heading to Edinburgh, Scotland; not for a holiday, but to volunteer in a homeless shelter for approximately nine months. “The shelter I’m volunteering at is an organisation that

supports youth aged 16 to 30 in Scotland who struggle with addictions, mental health issues, and other circumstances that cause them to become homeless,” Naomi says. “Basically, my job will be helping them gain positive skills that will help them in the everyday world and get them back on their feet. “They might have interviews setting up jobs and they might need a companion. “I’m like a peer supporter; there if they need any guidance or emotional support.” She was placed in the shelter through Latitude Global Vol-

unteering – an international organisation that sends young adults aged 17 to 25 all over the world to volunteer in different community businesses and organisations, from schools to camps and everything in between. An avid humanitarian, Naomi chose this particular placement because of her love for taking care of others. “I’m passionate about it... This is what I want to do for the rest of my life,” Naomi says. “I want to be a counselor and help people with mental health problems. “Having this experience away

from home and putting myself in this environment will really benefit me and make me more emotionally mature.” She’s feeling excited about it, but says she will find it challenging being away from family and having to navigate a new environment on her own. With Naomi’s food and accomodation being provided by the shelter, most of her weekly allowance and savings will be spent on exploring the surrounding area – visiting castles and museums, watching tattoos, and admiring the beautiful, old Scottish buildings.

Friendship across the globe By Aimee O’Hagan

Regional Support Manager for Friendship Force International, Kimberly Fraser (left); Friendship Force of Marlborough president, Rosemary Kirk; and President and CEO of Friendship Force International, Jeremi Snook.

Last Wednesday to Friday were a huge three days for members of Friendship Force Marlborough, who hosted the annual Friendship Force of New Zealand National Conference in Blenheim. Hundreds of FF members from around New Zealand attended the annual event - the aim of which is to celebrate and recognise

the positive impact of the organisation on people in New Zealand, whether that impact is made through home-hosting or by travelling overseas. Two special guests attending the conference were Friendship Force International CEO, Jeremi Snook, and FFI regional support manager, Kimberly Fraser, who say that the organisation is amazing in the sense that it “builds bridg-

es, internal connections, and understanding between countries”. Since it was founded in the late 1970’s, FFI has grown dramatically; there are now approximately 365 clubs in 63 countries around the world. New Zealand itself is home to 21, and was one of the first countries to start up a club. Jeremi and Kimberly plan to keep the organisation thriving.

“The goal for us is to bring the mean age of members down,” Jeremi says. “Most of our current FFI members have been part of it for a lifetime.” “We want to get more teenagers and young families involved,” Kimberly adds. “There’s nothing like connecting with people from another culture and having a sit down, face-to-face meal!”

Road code debate By Celeste Alexander

A text which was sent into the Sun’s Friday publication last week (February 21), which was in response to a driver’s text a week earlier, has struck a chord with a number of people in the community who say the New Zealand Road Code seems to not be understood. The original text which sparked the debate was sent in by a Sun reader on February 14, highlighting the intersection of New Renwick Road with Battys Road and Richardson Avenue. “Intersection of New Renwick Rd with Battys Rd & Richardson Ave. Traffic exiting Richardson Ave at this intersection are on a STOP sign and must give way to all other traffic EVEN traffic from Battys Rd turning across them. Number of near misses by those on Richardson Ave thinking they have right of way over before those turning out of Battys. They don’t!”

In response, another text came in for the February 21 publication claimed they were wrong. “You’re wrong. You were turning right on the ‘giveway’ from Battys and I was proceeding straight ahead after my STOP sign from Richardson. When New Renwick Road is clear I have right of way (you turned and almost hit me). Right turning traffic from Battys always gives way to straight traffic proceeding across Battys. I checked with the Police. Please give way as you will cause an accident. Thanx.”

This interaction has sparked a response from members of the public who have expressed their concern at the apparent confusion of the Road Code rules. One of these people were Nigel Perry who previously served on the Road Safety Council and is now a Road Safety volunteer. “The intersection these texts are referring to is a controlled intersection. “What this person has got wrong is that a car facing a STOP sign gives way to a car facing a Give Way sign. “If it had of been an uncontrolled intersection then this person would have been right, but it is controlled so coming out of Richardson Avenue you must have patience and great eye coordination. And if you have any shadow of a doubt, then don’t go,” he says. “A car facing a STOP sign gives way to a car facing a Give Way sign. Likewise at a Give Way sign you give way to all other vehicles except those facing a STOP sign.” For more information about the NZ Road Code, visit www. nzta.govt.nz

Bag appeal By Celeste Alexander

With headlines around the world sharing sad stories of abuse, mental health struggles and even worse – crimes which result in injury and death, are all too common. New Zealand is not exempt from this and here in Marlborough, we have our own members of the community experiencing daily struggles. So how can we help? The Sun Newspaper will be holding an appeal for the month of March collecting donations of items for women and children who are struggling, and who would appreciate something to brighten their day. Items such as toiletries and essentials, perfume, makeup, hair accessories and jewellery are appreciated; all things which help someone feel more confident. Personal items for families who otherwise cannot afford luxuries

The Sun Newspaper is launching its first ever handbag appeal, to run for the month of March to benefit local women in the community.

are also welcome. How this works: We encourage members of the community to find a nice toiletry bag, or handbag (new or in good second-hand condition) and fill it with some of the mentioned items. Donations can be brought into the Sun Newspaper office on High Street. The Sun Newspaper will be working with SF Marlborough, based in the Mental Health Hub, who will ensure local families who need these donations the most will receive them.

Volunteers are an essential part of the centre’s day-to-day operations, including foster homes for cats and kittens, dog walkers, general maintenance around the grounds and of course – fundraising. Clash of the super saloons Two huge nights of racing this weekend By Celeste Alexander

Marlborough, you are in for a treat! Eastern States Speedway will be hosting two thrilling nights of super saloon action on Friday and Saturday. Friday night, from 7pm will see the MTF Finance Blenheim NZ Super Saloon Grand Prix event which has attracted around 26 entries. For those who love watching the methanol fuelled V8 motors tear their way around the track, racing will continue on Saturday night with the Mag & Turbo Super Cup. Super Saloons have long been dubbed the race-bred ‘Monsters of Speedway’. Don’t be fooled by first appearances. Beneath their fibreglass bodies painted in attractive colours and adorning stickers are some of the most sophisticated and complex chassis designs and powerful engines. Just handling one of these beasts takes huge effort and skill, something which locals will see firsthand this weekend. Friday’s Grand Prix lineup is looking pretty impressive with around 26 drivers from all over
