Taking place on March 17, St Patrick’s Day is a celebration of Irish culture; a global phenomenon that is held in almost every country in the world. Marlborough will be taking part in the celebrations, with Blenheim’s only Irish bar ‘Biddy Kate’s’ planning various Irish foods and activities for St Patrick’s Day. Continued on page 2. Happy Saint Paddy’s Day! Continued from page 1. Owner Terry Sloan knows how to properly celebrate the holiday. Born in Belfast, Terry named the bar/backpackers ‘Biddy Kate’s’ in honour of his Irish mother, Bridget Kathleen. St Patrick’s Day is “a big long day” for Biddy Kate’s. Damon Ward will be providing live music, and there will be a specially pre-

pared Irish menu, with Irish stew and fried potato skins. Extra kegs of Guinness have been stored in preparation. “[There are] a lot of foreigners in town for harvest, looking to celebrate,” says Terry. “Everyone who doesn’t drink Guinness - drinks Guinness on St Patrick’s day. Everyone wants to be Irish.”

Biddy Kate's employees Hannah Fennell and Eden Kavanagh are both Irish; with Hannah hailing from Whicklow, and Eden being from South Dublin.

Seán Mercier, Barry Looney, and John O'Connor are from Limerick, Ireland. They will be celebrating their first St Patrick's Day in New Zealand this Tuesday.

Two people very excited for St Patrick’s Day are Seán Mercier and John O’Connor. Born and raised in Limerick, Ireland, Seán and John are keen to experience a “Paddy’s Day” away from home. “We’re nearly the farthest point away we could be from Ireland,” says John. “It’ll be interesting to see how big [St Patrick’s Day] is here.” “We’re excited,” says Seán. Back in Limerick, St Patrick’s Day is a slightly different affair. A national holiday; it is celebrated by people of all ages with parades happening in most cities. The parade is “a demonstration of Irish traditions and a way to welcome other cultures,” John says. Different areas of Irish society are represented, with boy-scouts, military, actors, and dancers all taking part. People wear face-paint, and sing ‘Fields of Athenry,’ while watching the parade. In Limerick, the Daniel O’Connell Fountain is dyed green by students every year. Of course, there is drinking. Everyone

is outdoors, and despite not being allowed to drink in public places, guards (police) look the other way, as long as you are behaving yourself, John says. “A running joke is that St Patrick’s Day is in the middle of Lent,” Seán adds. “St Patrick’s Day is our day off.” “Everyone is wrecked the day after,” John says. “On March 18 we have to work.” “The cure is hair of the dog; a full Irish Breakfast, and a pint,” Seán says. With the Dublin St Patrick’s Day parade cancelled because of COVID-19, Seán and John are saddened they will not get to watch the parade via broadcast. However, they are excited to see how Kiwis celebrate Ireland’s national holiday. What will Seán and John be doing next Tuesday? “Finding the most amount of Irish possible,” says Seán. “Honestly, one of the best parts of St Patrick’s Day is that it’s celebrated in so many countries. It’s like your home country can come to visit you,” says John.

Tai’s memory honoured with family’s donation By Celeste Alexander

A loving wife and mother of two, best friend to many, and a caring midwife who poured her heart and soul into her work, Tai Dixon’s legacy continues on nearly 12months after she was killed in a car accident. Tai’s family, including husband Scott, young daughters Iona and Lucia and father Bernie Hartley, will be visiting Wairau Hospital tomorrow to donate two cold cots in Tai’s memory. Tai was a well known and loved midwife who worked in Blenheim for around eight years before she, and her husband Scott and two daughters, moved to Christchurch at the end of 2017. Sadly Tai was killed by a drunk driver on June 2, 2019 as she was driving to work for her evening shift at Christchurch Women’s Hospital, where she worked as a hospital based midwife. The other driver, Daryl John Price, was driving his work van drunk and under the influence of drugs and crossed the centre line, colliding with Tai head-on. It was a huge shock for everyone who knew Tai, and now with the one year anniversary of her passing approaching, those who loved her are coming together to remember her in a way she would have approved – by helping others. According to Scott, Tai was passionate about helping women and families going through the trauma of stillbirth. “These cots will help to continue her legacy,” he says. “Tai will be remembered for the amazing mum and midwife that she was, as well as her warmth and compassion for all people and her passion for helping those most

Tai’s friends and family have raised around $7500 following her death, and Scott topped the amount up so they could purchase three cold cots from the UK.

“One of which has gone to Christchurch Women’s Hospital where she worked for the last year of her life,” Scott says. Flags out welcoming motorcycle organisation By Celeste Alexander

A large gathering of members belonging to New Zealand’s Ulysses Club will be in Blenheim today and all weekend for the club’s national rally and AGM. Blenheim has put out the welcoming mat for the 280 Ulysses members by putting up flags along Maxwell and Grove Roads sporting the club’s logo. The Ulysses Club for older motorcyclists (40-years and over), one of the largest organisations of its kind in New Zealand with around 3000 members, is now a familiar part of this country’s riding scene. The Marlborough branch is proud to be hosting the club’s national rally which hasn’t been held in Blenheim since 2006. While it’s not an event for the public to attend, there may be some members riding about on their motorcycles as part of the weekend’s activities

including treasure hunts. Members of the Marlborough Branch, Kelvin and Julia Watson, John and Jane Laing, Tom Brown and Gisela Schulze have been working hard behind the scenes to co-ordinate the event, as well as promoting the region to the out-of-town members. “It’s our opportunity to showcase some of what Marlborough has to offer,” Kelvin says. “We will also be hosting three vice presidents from Australia… it’s exciting that they want to come here.” The rally will include meetings between national committee and branch co-ordinators today, an AGM tomorrow then four treasure hunts for members. Two will be done on their motorcycles on gravel and sealed roads, one self-drive and one walking hunt around the CBD area. These will be followed by a function with the dress-up theme; Pirates of the Marlborough Sounds.

Marlborough singers head to NYC By Aimee O’Hagan

As Alicia Keys famously sings, New York is the concrete jungle where dreams are made of – a place where there’s nothing you can’t do. In January, four singers from Marlborough were lucky enough to go there and experience the magic of the American city themselves. Rien Wagenvoort, Natalia Shabanava, and Elaine and Ian Blair made up the excited group of Marlburians who travelled to New York with six other singers from Nelson, Wellington, and Lower Hutt (as part of kiwi choir, Vox Kiwiana). They performed the works of composer Sir

Karl Jenkins, ‘The Armed Man, A Mass For Peace’, alongside 270 singers from around the world at New York’s Carnegie Hall. According to Rien, the group’s overseas adventure was “out of this world”. “It was a tremendous experience, particularly being in a hallowed venue such as Carnegie Hall,” Rien says. “It all happened so quickly.” “I’ve never had such an experience!” Natalia adds. Rehearsals for the performance were held

in the grand ballroom of Park Central Hotel, about 50 metres from the venue, and were four hours long – something Natalia says she will never forget. “It was very tiring and quite hard on my voice,” she says. Highlights for the group included meeting Sir Karl Jenkins himself, going sight-seeing, and experiencing the atmosphere of being on stage; being squashed tightly against other singers, feeling the lights on their faces, and hearing the swell of the music and the symphony of voices.

Aerial LiDAR survey takes off

Second Hand Sunday coming soon

Aerial surveying has started in Marlborough using the latest LiDAR (Light Detecting and Ranging) technology to collect geographic data, used to create detailed 3D maps and landscape models. Mayor John Leggett says the project will provide valuable information to support the development of 3D landscape modelling. “These models will have a major benefit for long-term planning and can be applied at a farm-scale level to benefit viticulture, forestry and pastoral farming.” “We can use them for land management decisions, understanding potential sea-level rise impacts, and geohazard mapping including flooding, fault lines, liquefaction and slips,” he says. “Flying to gather the aerial survey data is a very large task and expected to take three years, with flying occuring mainly over summer.” “Data capture will focus on three areas, with the Marlborough Sounds as a first

The first Second Hand Sunday for 2020 is coming soon to a driveway near you. On Sunday 29 March you have the opportunity to clear out some of your unwanted household items and leave them at your letterbox for others to take away. This Council initiative aims to encourage Marlburians to reuse and recycle household items – your unwanted items may be someone else’s treasure!

Here’s how it works: Aerial Surveys’ P68B Partenavia twin engine light aircraft is being used for the LiDAR project, along with a Cessna 206 single engine craft with an additional sensor.

priority, followed by South Marlborough and then Molesworth. The data will be processed with final results expected in 2023.” The LiDAR survey is being carried out by New Zealand company Aerial Surveys Ltd. Local surveying companies will provide ground services to verify the flight data. Land Information New Zealand is managing the initiative on behalf of the Government, which is investing up to $19 million to expand 3D mapping in

the regions. The Council has funded some of the cost, with contributions from Port Marlborough, Nelson Forests Ltd, Merril Ring Ltd and Tasman Forest Management Ltd. Once complete, New Zealand’s LiDAR coverage should increase to approximately 80%, from 10% today. Blame the Nelson food trucks who didn’t show for the lack of food! It takes more than 5 min notice to prepare food so when there are no shows, of course the ones who do show up will be super busy and run out of food..

The Sun Bike Walk Marlborough Such a pity that their efforts proved fruitless. To encourage biking in Marlborough it would be great if roads were re-sealed with smaller aggregate on main cycling routes.

Costly Ratepayers of Blenheim. Revolt Don’t let the Council away with 1.6 Million for furniture for Library.

Dogs stay please!! Blenheim has made some great strides recently and it’s been so great to see more dogs in the CBD! It’s a shame that some irresponsible dog owners ruin the reputation of responsible dog owners, but as a rule of thumb always ask an owner before approaching their dog! They will usually say yes the dog is friendly! Banning dogs is not the answer, educating owners and doing what we can to prevent irresponsible people from owning dogs is.

Shameful I witnessed a dog being hit over the head numerous times after being let out of a ute at the Taylor river. The dog was excited but cowered down to the guy. When confronted his girlfriend stuck up, shame on you. How would you like being wacked over the head with a strap? Those dogs should be taken from you, I rang the council after hours dog control and I still haven’t heard a thing 1 week later. Disgusting.

Made from NZ? What meaningless nonsense when a product has a label ‘made from NZ’ and imported goods”. Imported from China, Canada, Mongolia or Mars?

Vaping Golly all this stuff on vaping. I know someone that vapes, they seriously think it’s an alternative to smoking. I saw a young man online VERY CLEARLY showing he has a lung disease caused BY vaping, very dangerous in fact. Just saying, take note, get educated people.

Business space Re the ‘5’ empty business spaces out opposite Paknsave and Bunnings. Shouldn’t we be thinking about what businesses could be put in the many empty buildings in the Blenheim CBD??

Re: Share the path It was a silly idea by council to make the path shared by bikers, walkers and dogs. It was put in as a foot path, you’re not allowed to bike on foot paths anywhere else, why do it here. The path isn’t wide enough for bikes to pass someone walking unless the walker moves over to the very edge, like the bikers say, there is a gap, perfect for a sprained ankle, and if you don’t it’s a handle bar scrape along your side. Maybe time to put bike path in.

What is happening with all these business’ popping up in residential streets? In an already saturated and difficult housing market how on earth can first home buyers and buyers in general get into this ridiculous market? You’re not just competing with other home hunters now but businesses and out of town investors? Its getting bloody tough!

Wheat spraying Check out the use of glyphosate being sprayed on the wheat crops prior to harvesting. I have been informed that the processing is more efficient because it releases the grain.

Re: New bridge Cut me off Hey driver of the crappy silver plumber/gas van, did your cutting off manoeuvre really save you time? Hope your workmanship is better than your driving.

The new bridge is NOT paid for by ratepayers! Road users pay for it as it’s a State Highway. A bypass is not needed now or ever. With more and more freight on rail, fewer trucks will be using the roads in years to come.

NELSON MARLBOROUGH HEALTH MARLBOROUGH (03) 520 9999 NELSON (03) 546 1800

Let’s talk about…

CORONAVIRUS There are simple, highly-effective actions you can take to help reduce the likelihood of a significant Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in our region. Viruses like the Coronavirus are designed to spread. So let’s not welcome them into our lives. Let’s make an unfriendly environment where viruses cannot thrive. To do this:

1. Prevent yourself from catching a virus • Avoid close contact with people with cold or flu-like illnesses • Cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing • Wash hands for at least 20 seconds with water and soap and dry them thoroughly. Do this before eating or handling food, after using the toilet, after coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose or wiping children’s noses and after caring for sick people.

2. Prevent spreading viruses • If you are unwell with flu-like symptoms or think you may have come into contact with someone with the virus, stay at home. Don’t go to school or work, and especially do not go to a GP, pharmacy or hospital waiting room without calling Healthline first for specialist advice: 0800 358 5453

3. Prepare to care for yourself and others at home • The majority of people with Coronavirus experience mild symptoms and can care for themselves and others at home • Prepare for this. Can you work from home? What extra support will you need and who can help with this? • If you have to stay at home, refer to official information and advice from the Ministry of Health: www.health.govt.nz Dr Nick Baker - Chief Medical Officer, Nelson Marlborough Health

Farmers are busy preparing their animals, and horse owners practising their routines while bakers have been in their kitchens testing out their top recipes. So much preparation is going into next weekend’s Flaxbourne A&P Show that it promises to be a fantastic day out in the country. The Flaxbourne area has been holding it’s hugely popular and well supported A&P Show for decades, with this year being the 95th year it’s been held. For those who have already attended a Flaxbourne A&P Show you will know that there’s something for all ages to enjoy, and for those who have yet to experience it – organisers say it’s a day not to be missed. Like all good A&P shows there’s a fantastic array of agricultural machinery and equipment and industry experts on hand to talk too.

New and classic car displays provide an added element of interest for motoring enthusiasts, while the many trade sites showcase local businesses with their products and services. With animals making up a huge part of the A&P show lineup, the public won’t be disappointed. Horse events kick off the day as well as the Handy Dog Challenge, followed by a sheep counting competition. Farm animals will be groomed and put on show for judges to award prizes to, and for something a bit different there will be dairy goats being judged and as well as a milking demonstration. Nestled within the centre of the showgrounds will be a selection of arts, crafts and food sites for people to view. Everything from farm fresh produce and plants through to clothing, soaps and

jewellery will be on display and available for purchase. Sturgeons Amusements will once again bring their rides to the event, providing hours of fun for the whole family. Jump in one of the bumper cars and race against your friends, enjoy the views from the ferris wheel and try your luck at winning a prize at one of the side shows. Once you have worked up an appetite, enjoy some food from one of the sites organised by Ward School, the Flaxbourne Café and the Seddon Lions. Then sit back and relax, watch the competitions and show entertainment and enjoy a fun day out in the country. Entry to the show is $10 for those over the age of 17-years, and free for the younger. There is no Eftpos on the grounds so make sure you have cash.

Elevated E.coli levels found in the Taylor River Marlborough District Council’s weekly monitoring of coastal and river swimming sites around the region has found unusually high E. coli concentrations in one part of the Taylor River. The area covers about 1.5km of river upstream of the amphitheatre in Blenheim, up to Murphys Creek where it joins the Taylor at the old flax mill (see map). Environmental Scientist, Steffi Henkel, says the Council has decided to extend the length of the Taylor River that is considered unsafe for swimming. “We are investigating the source

of the contamination but in the meantime we advise people not to swim and avoid contact with the water in this part of the river. We have also put up warning signs.” “Although the swimming guidelines are based on the risk level for our most vulnerable people, such as young children and people with pre-existing conditions, dog owners should also be cautious and try to avoid their pets swimming or drinking from this part of the river.” Further information on the Council’s water testing regime is available at www.lawa.org.nz.

sports talk With Jacob Page

Changing times for cricket coverage These are changing times in the country for cricket. With Sky Television signing off it’s test match coverage earlier this month, the way New Zealand consumes its summer sport is about to change. As home cricket moves to Spark Sport from next summer, questions will be asked over the quality and look of the service. Their effort with last year’s Rugby World Cup was erratic

at best and there were many technical glitches. Sky’s service, while overpriced for many years, was reliable and world class for the most part. Cricket fans will not tolerate any teething issues with the coverage. The other big question is who will be the main face of the newlook summer. Long time cricket lead Ian Smith has chosen to stay with Sky where he has run the rugby

sidelines for many years. A bold presenter choice would be Brendon McCullum. A highly respected player who is relatable to the TV audience but also relatively new to commentary. Spark could lure Simon Doull, Craig Cumming or Mark Richardson to front it, all three would be a safe, but an unspectacular choice. The two filters could be Laura

McGoldrick and Mark Nicholas. McGoldrick has no actual cricket experience but is a familiar face to Kiwi viewers. Nicholas was the long-time cricket lead on Channel 9 in Australia and would be a respected international option. The split in the major sports has now happened and like any good arms race, both companies will be trying to impress with their respective trump cards.

Rally cars drive for Hospice By Celeste Alexander

There are many ways to raise money for charity but the Marlborough Car Club definitely stood out with their recent fundraiser; providing rides in rally cars at a local speedway event. Club members attended Eastern States Speedway’s race meeting on February 28 with a number of their cars and ‘sold’ rides in the co-driver seat in an effort raise money for Hospice Marlborough. This has been a popular initiative for the club in the past and once again it was well supported. Husband and wife racing team and club members, Jason and Tracey Clark, proudly presented $510 in cash to Hospice Marlborough fundraising and events co-ordinator, Sandy Inwood on Wednesday. Hospice is a cause close to their hearts as they have seen first hand how “important” the service is. “It’s after seeing how great the Hospice team is here through our own experience that makes us proud to support them,” they say.

Hospice Marlborough fundraising and events co-ordinator, Sandy Inwood was thrilled to receive a cash donation from Marlborough Car Club members, Tracey and Jason Clark.

“People who paid for a ride that night really enjoyed themselves and we ended up having nine of our club cars there,” Jason adds. “One lady came from Nelson with her son to go for a ride. They had supported it last year and

were so excited to come back for it again.” Sandy was delighted to receive the donation and says it’s “fantastic” when events such as this support the Hospice. “We are so grateful, so thank

you to those who paid for a ride and supported us,” she says. The Marlborough Car Club will have a number of their cars on display at this Sunday’s Hospice Vehicle Display event at Waterlea Racecourse from 11am – 3pm.

Indoor Bowls open days By Frances Chin

If you’re looking for some excitement, come on down to Simcox Stadium and join in a game of indoor bowls. The Marlborough Indoor Bowls Association will be holding open days March 17, 24, and 31, providing an opportunity for people interested to try out the sport. “All Indoor Bowlers, new players, and Green Power members are especially welcome,” says Association coach Glen Hurcomb. Indoor bowls can be played by people at any age. It is a game of strategy, with skill being more important than endurance or strength. This low cost sport provides its own bowls and mats, and is a fun way to socialise, with

young and old both mingling over some friendly competition. Whether you are keen for a social game, or want to play competitively, the Marlborough Indoor Bowls Association will provide, with tournaments and championships held most weekends. “[Indoor Bowls] require careful game analysis and skills that make each game you play a real challenge of wit and mind,” says Glen. “Positive factors include a mild level of exercise and no weather worries along with mental stimulation and good social contact.” In addition to their open days, The Marlborough Association is also holding a ‘Family Fun Day’ on March 22 at 1pm, meaning the whole family can come on down and play together.

On a side note, New Zealand Cricket is still yet to front on the axing of radio commentaries from Radio Sport. Chief executive David White should be ashamed of his handling of this situation, it is yet another in a long line of mediocre PR moves from the man in charge. His silence is a slap in the face to all cricket fans, especially those who rely on that form of coverage.

Miss playing rugby? Love the game but not the drama? The Cobras - arguably the most successful Marlborough rugby team over the last five years - are always looking for guys who love the game, a good chat, and a casual beer with the lads. We’re mostly dads with families so we keep it to one training a week, but we welcome anyone with a passion for the game. All we ask is you give 100% on game day.

Keen? Contact Barny 027 493 3924 or Dan 021 976 697 or come to training at Oliver Park, Thursdays 6pm.

Indoor Bowls coach Glen Hurcomb helps Janice Phelps practice her skills.
