Go the All Blacks

By Jacob Page Four die-hard rugby fans may have split allegiances during Super Rugby but when it comes to the All Blacks during a World Cup, their unified support is easy to see. Terry Reed (left), Brett Lawton, Tanya O’Brien and Ian Dunlop, created a three by two metre polyurethane, waterproof All Blacks sign that hangs proudly just off the main highway between Blenheim and Havelock. Terry says more than 100 man hours were put in to the sign, that is clearly visible to all passing traffic just 10 minutes outside the town.

United in support of men in black Continued from page 2 “Originally Tanya came up with the idea to do a banner for the last World Cup, so a few of us got together and decided how big we wanted it to be and chucked around some ideas for designs and things happened from there. “Brett did the stencilling of the fern design and it’s held up really well against the weather which is what we wanted,” Terry says. Tanya says the sign was a big hit in 2011 when it was hung from the top of her two-storey home. “It’s massive but it looked good and pretty much dominated the view when you

looked at the house,” she says. “We didn’t want to put a date on it so we could use it for future events,” Terry says. Brett says while painting the sign, his spare room was turned into a glorified sports art studio. “I think we went through seven cans of white and the paint took forever to dry. “It took three or four days to really come together,” Brett says. “We had a ceremony every process but it looks really great as you’re driving past. The All Blacks are trying to become the first team in history to win back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles.

With the sharp wintry weather finally dying away, the Awatere Play Centre utilised the spring sun to showcase their first pet day. Local parent Ally Avery says the pet day offers the children the opportunity to mingle with other children’s pets too. The event is predominantly parent run and includes a vast array of animals, with everything from lambs to ponies and a couple of fish too. Another parent, Eileen Eriha says that the pet day provides the opportunity for everyone to come together as a family. She also says that we get so caught up in our daily lives that it is nice to be brought together through a fun day like a pet day.

Blenheim band piping mad By Jacob Page The Blenheim Highland Pipe Band are angry a Nelson pipe band is moving in on their turf and performing a concert with the same name, at the same venue in the same month as their fundraising concert. Drum major Alan Kernick says the Stoke Celtic Pipe Band will play a fundraising concert at Blenheim’s St Andrews Church this Sunday called ‘Celtic in the Kirk’ which is the exact name, location and month of the Blenheim Pipe Band concert last year. However Stoke Pipe Band president Bryce Gilchrist says there was no intentional malice in the move and it was simply one Blenheim man’s idea who wanted to see it happen again. The 2014 concert raised $2000 for the Blenheim Pipe Band and was the brain child of its former president who was not re-elected and has since aligned himself with the Stoke Celtic Pipe Band. Alan says while they have no issue

with the Nelson group performing a concert of the same name, he is at a loss to work out why they would do a concert in Blenheim and with so many similarities to last year’s concert. Posters for the event do not say it is the Stoke Pipe Band that is putting on the concert. “We don’t have an issue with the name but we don’t see why they think they can put a concert on in our patch,” Alan says. “They’ve made no attempt to ensure people know they are a Nelson group and we wanted to make sure people knew that their money would not The Blenheim Highland Pipe Band are regulars at many events around be going to us but to a Nelson group Blenheim including Daffodil Day. instead. been naïve in their approach to the The concert last year helped raise “It seems like a sneaky move.” concert but he denied there was money for Blenheim club members The Blenheim group had sent any intent to annoy their Blenheim to compete with their band at a emails to Bryce, asking him to counterparts. national event. reconsider the move but those calls He says his band had several Bryce says he would like a good went unanswered. members from Blenheim and they working relationship with Blenheim “Surely they can do their own “deserved to play in front of some but admitted that would be difficult fundraising concert in Nelson, we home town support”. for a while. don’t think there is any need for “The reality is that the concert is He says if Blenheim wanted to perthis,” Alan says. this Sunday and we have too much form a concert in Stoke “they would Bryce says his band “may have invested to pull out of it.” be welcomed with open arms”.

Marion and Bono star at resthomes By Jacob Page Marion Preston is a regular at Ashwood Park and Springlands Retirement Homes with her twoand-a-half-year-old german shepherd Bono. The dynamic duo wanders the halls as familiar faces as they conduct a form of pet therapy where residents have a pat with Bono and have a chat with Marion. Marion has a smaller dog called Herbie who also does some of the duties. Marion, a former midwife, says the positive impact her two hour visits can have is incredible. “I think a lot of the residents look forward to seeing Bono and Herbie. “Many of the people in here are country people, farmers who have

spent a lot of their lives with dogs.” Bono is also a hit at Ashwood Park’s dementia ward. “Bono is a big dog being a ger-

man shepherd and sometimes that’s intimidating to the residents but he loves the attention as much as they do.

“When I got Bono, you could see how placid he was,” Marion says. “You could see the other dogs just running around and there he was just lying there.” Marion says she felt like she was able to give back to the community through the two dogs. Ashwood Park owner Ross Bisset says the addition of Marion and Bono as regular visitors had been a huge success. “Marion has been coming here for the past two months and it’s been great,” he says. “The residents really enjoy it and the dementia ward residents really enjoy seeing them. “For many, it makes their day.” “I’m certainly hopeful Marion keeps coming as long as she wants.

No online voting for Marlborough The Marlborough District Council has decided not to take part in a proposed trial of on-line voting. Cost and risk were the two factors that prompted a majority of councillors to oppose participation in the trial for the 2016 local body elections. Central government had agreed to the trial so long as the local bodies involved also covered the costs and could provide assurances about the security of the voting process. Marlborough councillors while supportive of the concept did not agree that a few councils should carry the financial responsibility for testing a new voting procedure.

Man in court on wounding charge A 63-year-old Blenheim man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following an incident at a house on Muller Road on Sunday afternoon. Police were called to the address about 5pm where a woman had received a knife wound to her arm. She had sought assistance from a neighbour who called Police. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment. The man was arrested shortly after and appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday.

Rick to get hearts pounding By Daniel Stephens You can expect lots of colour, fantastic costumes and props and great characters, along with the incorporation of Roman culture in Rick Edmond’s latest show, ‘The Last Heart.’ Rick is passionate about Marlborough Sounds heritage and loves that this show allows him to utilise this in the play. He has written and directed the show, says it’s premise is centred around the Ancient Romans sailing to the Marlborough Sounds and the traces of their presence that they leave there. Rick admits he loves that the show allows him to incorporate Roman culture and blend it with Marlborough history. The show, which will be performed in the Havelock Theatre, is currently in the dress rehearsal

stage, which Rick says is going “really well”.

He says he prides himself on the great age range in its cast,

with actors as young as seven and eight performing. Rick says that is what he loves about the Havelock Theatre, it has a very nurturing feel to it, which allows the youth of Marlborough to work alongside adults as equals. As a self-confessed comedic writer, he says to expect a lot of laughs, great entertainment and a bit of quirkiness, including a flying cow. As well as all this, expect a few surprises too. ‘The Last Heart’ will take place in the Havelock Theatre, with the Gala Opening tonight at 7:30pm. Further performances take place on September 24-26 and October 1-3, all at 7:30pm. A matinee performance will also take place on September 27 at 4pm.

New bus shelter Blenheim Toyota d will benefit all e it k By Daniel Stephens Blenheim residents are set to benefit from a new bus shelter that has been donated to the town. The bus shelter had its grand opening on Middle Renwick Road, on Friday. The shelter has been donated by the local ’41 Club’ and is situated on the outskirts of the Ashwood Park Retirement Village, opposite the Springlands Countdown Supermarket. This is the fifth shelter to be donated to Blenheim, but the first by the ’41 Club.’ Members of the club wanted to do something for the local community and offer something that would benefit Blenheim residents. The shelter is the first one to contain a frosted glass film and this was incorporated with the intention of allowing

privacy for the Ashwood Park residents. Ross Bisset, owner of Ashwood Park Retirement Village, says with 150 residents on site, the shelter will benefit those at Ashwood Park and compliments the safety crossing that was placed across Middle Renwick Road nicely. Ross says that the current public transport situation in Blenheim is good, but the more public transport options available the better. Ross also mentions that public transport is ideal because it keeps up the level of independence amongst Ashwood Park Retirement Village residents. The council intend to add three further shelters to the Blenheim bus route by the end of the year. One will be on Hutcheson Street and two on Wither Road.

Blenheim couple Chris and Jo Lane and their five children – from left, Keegan, 18, Bob, 16, Casey, 15, Spencer, 12 and Poppy-Jo, 8 – in the front row of the Civic Theatre after deciding to buy seven seats in the new ASB Civic Theatre.

Seven heaven for Lane family A Blenheim family have bought seven seats in the new ASB Civic Theatre because they want to give something back to the community that has helped raise their family. Jo and Chris Lane moved to Marlborough 17 years ago and have grown to a family with five children. They get huge satisfaction from watching Marlborough people create music and “magic” on stage. “We’re always there in the front row watching the shows and concerts,” Jo says. “I’ve always joked I’d like to buy the front row for the family.” The couple see this as their chance to give support for the enjoyment and opportunities their family have had. Jo is animated as she talks about the cultural life of a town like Blenheim and the way it adds to the experiences and possibilities open to young people. She talks about the “four sides of the marae” that help build a strong child – family, school, sport and culture. She and Chris watched that growth in their eldest son Keegan when, aged seven, he started playing the cornet with tutor Kevin Moseley. That learning, and his involvement with the Marlborough District Brass Band over 10 years (“at virtually no cost”), gave him a sense of place and purpose, Jo says. The people in the band influenced him and helped his transition to a young adult. Keegan has performed regularly on the old Civic Theatre stage and is involved with three

bands in Wellington now he is at university in Wellington. Jo is excited that younger family members are beginning to follow in his musical footsteps. She says they have also watched people such as dance teacher Jeannie Mark and speech and drama teacher Pam Logan develop strong life skills in the many children they work with. All these factors prompted the Lanes to decide to buy seven seats in the new theatre. Their seats are in the bronze section, which are available to sponsors at $1500 each. Jo says they are not wealthy and it’s a big commitment for the family but they see it as a legacy for their children. “We are able to pay it off over three years, which makes it possible for a family like us.” “Let’s face it – if we were living in Auckland we would have paid far more than that just in tuition fees.” They also see the theatre having clear benefits for the region. “People will start coming over the hill from Nelson to see shows here, and to use the theatre in other ways.” Details of seat sponsorships are available from the Civic Theatre ticket office in Blenheim. Options range up to $10,000 for platinum level seats, with a $2000 premium added for the buyer to select the exact seats they want to sponsor. The seats sale is part of the final campaign to raise $2M for the stage fitout. The theatre is due to open in February.

I didn’t notice it was gone, but yes, I guess it’s a good idea.

Dear Ed, I didn’t mean to upset John Key fans as apparently has happened judging by a text message you published. But politicians stand and fall in a voter’s eyes by their performance. As an independent voter not committed to a party, I am prepared to give any PM a fair go. But policies like the China free trade deal (benefits shaky), the proposed TPPA, foreign buy-ups of our economy and land, violence in society, sycophantic fawning to the All Blacks and pony tails and the absolute waste

of the flag referendum to name several, form your assessment of the performance. The $27 million flag referendum would give about 500 additional police officers, over 550 nurses. When crime is rife, hospices have to beg for funds and people are on operation waiting lists, it’s a jumbled priority list to be running around after All Blacks and holding a referendum on a trivial issue. If the majority believe in the “Emperor’s New Clothes”, so be it. - Don Coyote

Dear Ed Re; All the incredible hu-ha about our national emblem, for which we have every reason to be absolutely proud of. It is one of the most beautiful and very meaningful national flags in existence on this planet. Why would anyone want to change it for designs of imagination? The very fact that there are a number of designs without particular significance cancels out every reason for dramatic change. We are swamped with enormous revolutionary changes that bite deeply into the stable foundations of our traditional values, which guidelines have stood the test of time and given us this country New Zealand, for which we have every reason to be very proudly supportive and loyal. Old hat some say, absolute rubbish. We desperately need stability and God defend New Zealand. We have just correctly celebrated 100 years celebrations of the huge loss of precious young men’s lives, in two wars plus smaller conflicts. That was the precious emblem they flew in the face of often vicious odds. What an insult to that sacrificial obedience against numerous odds to change the flag. Of course there are rights for Maori and there is plenty of room below the Jack and the stars to sail their respectful canoe. Southern X

Pioneer looks back

Dick Simpson turned the first sod of soil at the Brancott Estate for Montana Wines in 1973. As one of the pioneers of the wine industry of Marlborough, he talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about the trials and tribulations of planting one of the first vineyards in Marlborough, his frustrations with the industry today and how he was able to shoot rabbits while lying in bed during his seven year tenure with the company. It’s fair to say Dick Simpson did not realise he played a big part in Marlborough’s history until he looked back years later. “I was operating an agricultural contracting business with a big Ford tractor; a large rotary hoe, chisel plough and the first direct seed drill in Marlborough. In June of 1973, I was phoned from a Ford tractor agent telling me to go to a property in Brancott Rd to demonstrate to some interested people and he told me to bring my chisel plough. “A bunch of men came and it turned out to be people from Montana who were interested in planting the first vines in Marlborough. They were very impressed and immediately asked the Ford agent for 19 different tractors which he could not supply as all the tractors in the country were allocated. “Of course I was available with my one tractor,” Dick says. “I went to John Marris who was their land agent and I said ‘I’m for sale.’ “They brought my tractor and then my services because they wanted me to develop 1300 acres in six weeks. “Besides the gear they purchased off me they had nothing else… “It was a very inept start. “I had to destroy acres of Lucerne and there was no round-up back then let me tell you.” Dick worked for a month by himself as Montana struggled to buy the machinery they wanted because agents would not pass with their allocation of equipment. “Nobody knew who was paying for it until I started. “People were against the vineyards… They weren’t welcome and that’s why there aren’t a lot of photos from that period.”

Dick Simpson was there at the start of the Dick with one of the vines at Brancott Estate in the mid-1970s. wine boom in Marlborough.

Montana initially wanted to be here in such a scale that nobody else would want to come in. The four properties I prepared for grapes were the Fairhall Estate, The Brancott Vineyard, The Renwick Estate and another property on Hawkesbury Road. “I said to Jim Hamilton that since I did all the developing I wanted to be the supervisor of the yard with the best soil but he said no and told me I was going to Brancott “to fix it” because that was the one with the toughest soil type. “It was hard but in the end, that’s the property that created Marlborough’s reputation. “I was there seven years and we lived on a house on the property… In fact, I could shoot rabbits while lying in bed.” Dick says there was little margin for error in the early days as Montana’s budget was tight, however with a drought and a 50 per cent fail to strike rate, early progress was difficult.

“We had to be very innovative with our machinery, often we’d encounter something and then have to think about ways to solve it,” Dick says. “Thank goodness they had such a good engineer. “It was big scale work so any mistake was a big mistake. “Many of them had never seen dry creeks or drought like it.” Dick and his wife Jenny were the first to put in private plantings in 1975, a single acre of Muller-Thurgau. Dick looks back with only fond memories. “It’s a pretty big achievement. “It was difficult to establish here with the drought and the vine failure…There was a lot of replanting. “We had to modify equipment, we had to build our own and there was no irrigation, they didn’t expect to need it. “They came here to produce quality not quantity and that’s all changed.”

“There was no over cropping, no leaf plucking, no hedging, we let our vines grow out. “The way we grew them made this reputation. First year you grow the roots, second year the trunk and the third year you cropped according to the strength of the vines but now they’re in a rush for grapes. “We planted the rows east to west to get as much sunlight as we could. “We were taught to never waste any sun because the leaves need it. “Now the grass between vines has plenty of sun because the vineyards, not just Montana, want the property looking nice, which I feel is hurting the quality of what is being produced in all vineyards.” Dick and Jenny have done many things since, including many lifestyle blocks, an avocado farm and a stint in Tasmania and the Sunshine Coast in Australia but say it’s great to have returned to Blenheim.

Flavours that take the cake No matter how beautiful or aesthetically pleasing a wedding cake may be, what matters most is how it tastes. These are the top eight most popular wedding cake flavours for 2014. 1: Red velvet Appropriately named for its deep red colour, red velvet cake is the perfect hue to represent love and romance on your wedding day. 2: Chocolate It has so many different levels of richness and options for flavour pairings.

3: White chocolate with raspberry The sweet richness of white chocolate with the tart fruitiness of raspberry is a winning combination. 4: Lemon Light and tangy, lemon cakes are perfect for a spring wedding and is a great choice for couples who don’t want a cake that is too heavy and rich. 5: Vanilla You can’t go wrong with plain vanilla. It can be dressed up any way you like with essentially any frosting,

filling or fruit. 6: Coconut and Lime Rich and creamy coconut cake combined with tangy and tart lime filling or frosting is a match made in heaven. 7: Pink Champagne What better way to celebrate than with some bubbly in your cake. 8: Carrot The ideal cake flavour for couples who want to go the non-traditional route.

Red velvet was the most popular choice last year for wedding cakes.

With the many bridal bouquet styles, choose unique bridal bouquets and floral arrangement to making a lasting impression. It’s your day, you are the star of the show. Here are just a few of the many options available. Posy bouquet The posy is round and small and can easily be held in one hand. This style is widely used where the natural stems are wrapped in a beautiful satin, velvet or organza ribbon and can be embellished with pearl pins and beading trims. Presentation bouquet These are long stemmed flowers and foliage that the bride carries cradled in her arm. It is a stunning alternative to more traditional styles of bouquets with popular floral choices including calla lilies, gladiolus, orchids, long-stemmed roses, delphiniums, and larkspur. Cascading bouquet Also known as a teardrop bouquet or trail bouquet. This is one of the most formal and most traditional of bouquets and is designed to spill gracefully over the bride’s hands as it flows downward for a sophisticated and stylized look. Almost any flower can be used in this style. Scepter bouquet The scepter bouquet gives a dramatic accent to your wedding day, it takes the shape of an over-sized wand. The handles are extra long, entwined with ribbon, cording, ornaments etc. The scepter bouquets are suitable for any wedding occasion and may be carried by any member of the wedding party.

Add sentiment to your wedding You spend months (if not years) picking out the perfect venue, choosing the right dress, hiring the best photographer, videographer, DJ... the list goes on and on. With everything you need to check off your to-do list, it’s easy to forget about the emotional side of a wedding. Adding some sentimental touches to a wedding can make all the difference as well as create some special memories. Here are a few ideas to give you some inspiration. • Did your mum preserve her wedding dress? Wrap a piece of her gown around the stem of your bouquet. • Snap a photo where you each hold up a photo from your parents’ wedding.

• Right before you’re pronounced man and wife, take a pause to give your mums one last kiss. • Engrave the title of your first dance song inside your ring. • If your father passed away before the wedding, attach a photo of him to your shoes so that he can still walk you down the aisle. • Attach photo charms of your ancestors to your bouquet. • Gather photos of your guests who can’t be with you on your wedding day, and display them inside mason jars for a unique twist on a photo table. • Snap a precious photo of you and your flower girl, and save it to give to her on her own wedding day.

Add your favorite quotes about love on your table numbers.

Attach a photo of a relative or ancestor to your bridal bouquet.

“Until today, the day that I told you I loved you, the day that I knew I was going to marry you, that was the best day of my life.”

Are you looking to work in a complex and challenging engineering environment where you can work with a diverse team? KiwiRail is looking for a Field Asset Engineers to join their newly created team in the Upper South Island. Ideally, we are looking for people with a strong background in Asset Engineering and we would consider applications from the West Coast, Blenheim, Kaikoura and Christchurch. Are you seeking to grow your career in Asset Management and hold an engineering degree? This role involves engineering analysis, scoping and costing jobs and inspecting the assets to help inform decisions about renewals and upgrades. Once you have completed your assessment of the work it is then handed over to our Production Team for execution. Your role will then be one of a QA, to ensure the work has been completed to a quality standard and within the specifications. This role provides you an opportunity to get out of the office and work at the ‘coal face’ while undertaking engineering analysis “back at base”. Knowledge of rail is not essential, the willingness to learn is. If you demonstrate the aptitude and want a career role with one of New Zealand’s largest employers, then we can provide you with comprehensive performance development and a career growth plan. You will enjoy working alongside a highly functioning team, who work hard and like to have fun. You will be committed to zero harm in the workplace and be able to work with and alongside all team players in KiwiRail. You will have a demonstrated capability of being able to make sound decisions based on fact and logical arguments that meet the scrutiny of our professional heads of engineering. In addition, you will need to be flexible to accommodate a change of work bank at any given point and we envisage that 1/3 of your time will be in the field, so a current clean licence will be essential. Are you a bright spark looking for a career role? Then apply online today via our careers site using reference code 3405.

Doctor David Orsbourn of enhanceskin, (Nelson), continues to offer his Blenheim client’s relief from achy, unsightly varicose veins. His clinics at the Churchill Private Hospital, where he performs Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) have, over the last two years, proved immensely popular. In fact, David finds that he no longer needs to spread the word about how life changing this treatment can be, because his patients are doing it for him. Now the word is out, David finds he is regularly treating family, friends and workmates of past patients who are enjoying the results of this non-invasive procedure and looking forward to summer, because for the first time in years, they’ll be wearing shorts again. David stresses, it’s not just about the improved look of his client’s legs following treatment, it’s also about the relief from painful, heavy legs, he says. “Just last week I treated a client who drove to work every day, because she couldn’t endure the short fifteen minute walk home. “She couldn’t believe how instant the relief from heavy legs was following the procedure, she was literally walking to work the next morning.” The great advantage this method of treatment has over surgery is the minimal downtime, with very little impact on your usual lifestyle over the days following your procedure. You will simply need to wear compression stockings, walk forty-five minutes a day and avoid immediate international air travel. Asked whether the surgery is painful, David assures us that he’s had clients compare him favourably to the dentist, with most saying that they have no idea why they delayed having the treatment. The outpatient procedure requires no general anaesthesia or hospital stay David says. “You quite literally walk in and walk out, and in fact you’re able to drive home after a short walk.” It’s clear that David has a real passion for what he does. “I never tire of seeing the profound results of this procedure; to know that I’ve helped

improve a client’s quality of life, is just gold.” Enhanceskin has Affiliated Provider status with Southern Cross, and is accepted by most other insurance companies. Even if you don’t have health insurance in place, the clinic has removed potential financial barriers to treatment as your payments can be spread, interest free, over a period of time utilising Q-Card or Farmers Card. The success of the Blenheim vein clinics has resulted in David offering additional cosmetical services and treatments in Blenheim, with Cosmetic Botulinum and Dermal Fillers now conveniently accessible. Whichever cosmetic treatment you decide upon, remember that nobody knows what you are visiting Dr David Orsbourn for, it could be for a skin or vein assessment... so your secret to looking refreshed is safe with enhanceskin. Your friends and family will all notice how great you look, but nobody will know why.

Two decade trophy drought over Sport By Jacob Page A 12-week development programme searching for the next hockey stars of Marlborough has earned two trophies not held in the province for 20 years. The Marlborough Under-13 development girls’ hockey team won the Ward-Maley Cup and the Supporters Cup over Nelson after a two decade drought. The two wins have catapulted the girls in to being able to run on and warm down with the New Zealand women’s Black Sticks before and after their games against Argentina in Blenheim next month. The first game, for the Supporters Cup saw the match locked up at 1-1 with six minutes to play following Hannah Chapman’s goal. However, in the dying minutes, Marlborough were awarded a penalty stroke. Riley Foote, who was only taught the penalty stroke as an afterthought prior to the game, calmly slotted the goal for the win and to break a 17-year trophy drought. A lone goal from Arlie Bates was enough to secure the Ward-Maley Cup as Marlborough’s defence impressed. First choice goalie Paige Sheridan had suf-

The aim of the 12-week programme was to create depth and hopefully allow Marlborough to be more competitive at the National Under-13 Girls tournament for the Collier Trophy.

Alex says it is easy for anyone interested in playing to get involved and anyone is welcome to come along to the Tuesday trainings. Girls just want to play football By Jacob Page Marlborough Football had 45 girls aged between five and 12-years-old at their Girls Only training academy on Sunday. The Tasman Makos suffered their first defeat of the ITM Cup rugby competition with a 28-19 loss to Auckland at Blenheim’s Lansdowne Park, on Sunday. Auckland made better use of the wind at their backs in the first half, racing out to a 20-6 halftime advantage that proved difficult to chase down. It was the Makos first loss of the campaign but they are still at the top of the table. The Makos play Counties Manukau on Saturday.
