This is according to the large number of complaints The Sun has received in the past three weeks, about the poor state of the fast food chain restaurant. Slow service, dirty tables and seats, foodcovered floors, forgotten food items, cold food, and standing in queues for too long, were

amongst the most common areas of concern. Jock Rattray (above) describes himself as a ‘loyal supporter’ of KFC for the past 10 years, but said the restaurant has recently lost his custom. For the past decade, Jock has treated himself twice a week to KFC, but he has recently cut all ties with the fast food chain. “Tables are always dirty and floors are covered in crumbs.

It’s never cleaned up properly and always looks shabby. I am normally there before lunch and it doesn’t look like it was cleared from the night before.” He said it was sad to see a new restaurant in such a bad state now, and it will be doing the reputation of the town no favours. “It’s not a good look, especially for the outof-towners.” Continued page 4.

Hair chopped for Cancer

More than $3000 raised The air breezed against their heads as their locks fell to the ﬂoor last Friday evening. Rachel Hutchinson and Maria Boniface have had their heads shaved for Marlborough Cancer Society, and a big crowd turned up at Biddy Kates Irish Bar, as eight people braved the clippers. “It’s so cool, there’s a great crowd and I’m absolutely rapt,” said Maria. Nearly two months ago Rachel’s sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. First up was Craig Forman from Rangers football club, in the hands of Michelle Caldwell from Endeavour salon. She said reactions from cancer patients to having their hair shaved off, varies. “Some women are totally emotionally prepared.” Michelle described Friday’s event as awesome. “I’ll donate my time, but not my hair!” Maria sported a mullet for an hour or more, at the request of her son, Zach

Kennett-Boniface. “It feels really good,” said Maria, admitting a few initial nerves. Rachel’s facial expressions told a story of their own. “I haven’t seen a mirror yet, but it feels alright, better than I thought it would.” Rachel’s daughter Ashleigh, 18, had her hair shaved off two years ago to support the children’s cancer charity Canteen. “I knew mum would do it, I’m very proud.” Kassandra Freeth, 21, had heard about the challenge on the radio that morning. “I just heard about it and thought I’m going to do this sort of thing too.” Finn Sloan was the youngest head shave candidate. “Oh, I decided about ﬁve minutes ago,” said the 11 year-old. His dad Terry, who owns the pub with his wife Audrey, was very proud of his eldest son. “It’s for such a great cause and so many people are connected and affected by cancer.” Maria’s workmate, constable Brett Burns also got taken to with the clippers. Cr Terry Sloan took the honours with the hand piece. Brett has a short haircut for work anyway, and was happy to support his workmate. Caitlin Wilson and Hayley MortimerJones also had their heads shaved. Maria and Rachel added in a huge thank you to Terry and Audrey Sloan for their wonderful support. “Donations are still coming in, and we would love to get over $3000.00,” she said. Maria ﬁnally had her mullet shaved off, with the help of Chris Mortimer-Jones.

A crowd close to 1000 people braved the cool weather to welcome home Picton’s first Olympic Gold Medallist Joseph Sullivan. He was rowed ashore by members of the Picton Rowing Club in the skiff he ﬁrst rowed on Picton Harbour. Once on the foreshore young children crowded around Joseph and his Gold winning medal. Picton Rowing Club members then formed a guard of honour, marching the Gold medallist rower through the cheering crowd to a welcoming haka by the Queen Charlotte College kapa haka group at London Quay. Joseph was then introduced to the crowd after speeches from Marlborough Mayor Alistair

Sowman, New Zealand Rowing chairman Ivan Sutherland and Picton Rowing Club president Jim Anderson. Joseph told the crowd he was overwhelmed and humbled by the turnout. “I couldn’t have come from a better region or a better community, so thank you,” he said. He thanked his ﬁrst coach Dave Bugler “for telling me I was too bloody small”. He also told the large gathering, “this gold medal proves that anyone can do what I have done and I really hope that someone else has the guts to get up and do it as well. Finally Joseph was happy to sign autographs for his young and not so young adoring fans.

By Annabelle Latz Mayor Alistair Sowman says he was never given the opportunity to discuss the idea of more salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds from New Zealand King Salmon. He ad m it te d Cent ra l G ove r n m e n t m ay h ave been ‘disappointed’ when Marlborough District Council submitted against nine new marine farms being developed in the Sounds, and he always would have stood by the Council’s word to defend the District Plan. “The district plan is being reviewed, but at this stage, as it is formulated, it stands.” The EPA recommended to the Minister of Conservation that the proposal was nationally significant and should be considered by a board of inquiry. “They decided to go the Environmental Protection Agency route, which took any discussion out of the frame.” The NZKS proposal was lodged with the EPA last October. “We didn’t know until very late in the piece where they wanted to establish the farms,

Alistair Sowman and discovered it involved the prohibited area of the Sounds for marine farming.” The EPA’s board of inquiry hearing began in Blenheim on Monday morning, to decide whether NZKS can develop nine more marine farms in the Marlborough Sounds. It is expected to last 10 weeks. “The EPA will have to look at all sides of the argument,” said Alistair. Alistair’s response to the Government’s recent pressure to change stance, was that the District Plan took 10 years to put together, and involved much input and consultation from the Marlborough community. Alistair said the council is not

opposed to aquaculture. At the hearing yesterday mor n i ng, D erek Nola n, Counsel for NZKS, presented an overview to the Board of Inquiry, on NZKS’s position. He acknowledged a number of areas of concerns brought up by Sounds residents in the submission process, such as noise levels, air quality and changes to the natural environment. He said NZKS had carried out thorough research, and concluded, after assessing information gathered from a number of environmental researchers, the affects on the Sounds’ natural environment and landscape would be minimal or non existent. Derek added that the net positive social effects of the proposed farms would offset any concerns. The nine new farms will grow NZKS business to grow 21,000-22,000 tonnes of salmon per year. “There will be no overall

The Board of Inquiry is made up of ﬁve members: Judge Gordon Whiting, Commissioner Helen Beaumont, Edward Ellison, Mark Farnsworth and Michael Briggs. NZKS has requested: a plan change to the Marlborough Sounds Resource Management Plan to rezone eight speciﬁc areas; has addressed the method of allocation of the right to apply for coastal space for marine farming; eight concurrent applications for resource consents to allow salmon farming; and an application for resource consent to allow salmon farming at a site at White Horse Rock, Pelorus Sound, on a site zoned Coastal Marine Zone 2, therefore not requiring a plan change for resource consent to be applied for.

Saturday, August 25 At about 5.30pm a single vehicle accident on State Highway One, two Kilometres North of the Awatere Valley Road was reported. All three emergency services attended and the power authority were despatched to deal with the power pole that was knocked over. The cause of the accident is unknown. At 6.25pm a 41 year old female administration clerk and a 20 year old unemployed female were arrested for Possession of Cannabis after Police invoked a search when smelling cannabis whilst making an unrelated enquiry at the address. A total of 30 grams of dried cannabis plant material was located at the address. At about 8.15pm Police received a number of calls in Lucas St about a party that had

got out of hand. Police Arrested three youths for breaching their bail and are now being dealt with by Blenheim Youth Aid. At 10.20pm a 27 year old unemployed male was arrested on a Warrant for his Arrest for Failing to Appear. At 11.45pm a 15 year old male student, a 14 year old male student and a 15 year old male student were all arrested for breaching their bail conditions namely their curfew. Sunday, August 26 At 1.15am an 18 year old unemployed female was arrested on a Warrant for her Arrest for Breaching her Community Work. At 2.15am a 21 year old male engineer was arrested for disorderly behaviour and his partner a 22 year old female mother was arrested for obstructing police after

an incident on Francis Street, Blenheim. At about 3am a Springlands resident was woken by a noise in her garage. The Blenheim Police Dog unit attended and located a male within the Police cordon with alcohol from the address. He will appear in the Blenheim District Court charged with burglary. At 3.20am a 36 year old male beneficiary was arrested for Breaching his Bail Conditions namely consuming alcohol. At 1.20pm a 15 year old male student was arrested for Breaching his Bail namely associating with a co-offender. At 5.45pm a 21 year old male engineer, an 18 year old male labourer and a 19 year old male labourer were arrested for Wilful Damage after they allegedly set ﬁre to vegetation at the base of a large Wattle tree at the Wairau River Floodway Reserve,

Bothams Bend Road, Spring Creek. One other male decamped, his identity is known however he is yet to be spoken to by Police. These males have been bailed to appear in the Blenheim District Court on the 10th of September 2012. At about 7.15pm a two car collision was reported to Police at the intersection of Weld St and Muller Rd. The road was blocked for 15 minutes while the vehicles were removed from the intersection. All occupants were able to extract themselves from the vehicle; one of the drivers was checked by ambulance staff with a possible head injury. Overnight a vehicle parked in Litchﬁeld St had two of its tyres slashed. Nil suspects.

There were bubbles galore at Witherlea Kindergarten as the children got on board with raising awareness for cystic ﬁbrosis. The Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Association’s “Bubbles Week,” August 13-19, - an annual date in the calender to fundraise for people suffering the rare disorder. Madison Hones was diagnosed with the condition in December last year, but plenty of support from the CF Association of New Zealand

and the community has been great, said mum, Lisa. Madison’s older sister Georgia attends Witherlea, and Lisa had asked to put up a poster of Madison to help raise awareness. The kindergarten were more than happy and suggested holding a “bubbles day,” so the kids can participate in Bubbles Week too. Lisa wanted to thank the local businesses they approached who allowed them to put up posters and donation boxes.

Laser beam strikes pilot At approximately 6.30pm an Air NZ flight coming into Blenheim was struck by a green laser beam on its approach. The pilot who was sitting on the left side of the cockpit was struck in his left eye with the laser beam and two passengers on the plane reported seeing the green laser beam come from within Blenheim residential area. Budding talent at Springlands By Robbie Parkes Talented artists at Springlands School are expressing themselves in a variety of mediums in a bid to raise money for their school camp. Students from the senior syndicate classes will be showcasing their artistic ﬂair at the Budding Young Talent Art Exhibition this weekend at the Drylands Winery Conference Rooms. Artist Gynelle Blake, has been running Friday afternoon art sessions for the students to paint, draw, sculpt and snap. “They have worked enthusiastically for the past 10 to 12 weeks, dedicating time to working on their pieces, and have even given up lunch breaks to complete them. “ She said they have created some

fabulous photographs using their surroundings as inspiration, with new techniques to focus on the smallest details. “We have acrylic still lifes, bold geometric abstract, water colour and pencil landscapes, and several acrylic and oil pastel pieces to name a few.” Sculptures are made using hebel, a building product similar to a lightweight aerated concrete, the results of which are similar to Oamaru stone, she said. “These children have achieved amazing results for their ages.” The money will go towards the senior classes school camp in Wellington for the week of the 3rd to 7th of December. Papa, Capital E, Weta Workshop, the Police College, Zealandia, City Art Gallery and much more. There is free public entry and silent bids on Saturday between 10am and 4pm as well as Sunday, 10am to 1pm. The exhibition will be concluded with a limited ticket event on Sunday between 2pm and 3pm with three feature live auction lots. Tickets are $15 per person which includes a complimentary glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres, and can be purchased at the Springlands School Ofﬁce, or at the venue during the weekend if all tickets are not sold prior. A second fundraising art exhibition will be held at the school during term four.

Sizzling success for World Vision Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Friday sausage sizzle Fridays at Redwoodtown School have contributed hugely to helping its Cambodian friend Putheavey Rouen, receive clean water, sanitation, food security and education in his village Samrong Tong. The project with World Vision over the past nine years has been so successful that Putheavey, 16 years-old, no longer needs the school’s help. The success was celebrated last Friday, when the students were this time shouted their weekly sausage sizzle. Chris Davis, World Vision coordinator for 320 schools in the South Island, said it was a sign of the school’s ongoing generosity that Putheavey no longer needs help. Currently, 10 development programmes like this are closing down. “This means success stories, because all the goals have been achieved.” He said the weekly sausage sizzles have meant the students have been able to identify what their money is going towards, instead of having oneoff fundraising events once a year.

Re txt talk in the Sun Friday 17-8-12. I have been a loyal supporter of KFC at least twice a week for the last 10 years. I agree the service has got very slack lately. Seems to be each time I go in there one of the new male staff members is always on the customer side of the counter ordering up big time with his mates & using his staff discount to pay for it. That I would have thought is abusing his privilege to get discount KFC for himself. After the new KFC store was built it was lovely till now. Tables are always dirty and floors

covered in crumbs never cleaned up properly and looks shabby. I am normally there before lunch and it doesn’t look like it was cleared from the night before. The waiting time is way too long especially when it’s all just sitting there ready to be served. There seems to be no urgency in the staff. Sadly for KFC I have had to take my takeaway business elsewhere, where the service is good, you don’t have to wait, food is hot, place is clean and staff are friendly and bubbly. Keep it green A few dedicated “Greenies” at Wairau Hospital have helped establish a new recycling programme which aims to reduce the amount of waste going to landﬁll. After a year of trialing services, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) has rolled out recycle collection points around the hospital grounds with the introduction of 30 “Happy Weka” branded recycle wheelibins to collect either glass, plastic or co-mingled recyclables. L oca l f i r m, Waste Ser vices Marlborough were chosen by the NMDHB to provide the recycling programme for the hospital. Theatre nurse, Jill Burrows was an instrumental driving force in establishing recycle services for the hospital. When the DHB Green Team kicked off the greening project in 2007 it was a great opportunity to start recycling in a more robust way and start to put systems in place, she said. “There is so much plastic waste, particularly in the operating theatre department, that it was a crying shame to see it going to landﬁll.” Initially a few “Greenies” would collect staff kitchen plastics, tins, glass and even all the food scraps, and either

take it home or to the local resource centre. “We needed to be quite committed and persistent with our practices, as we were met with some resistance from staff, who understandably see recycling as “just another job” on a very busy day.” “We now fill a large Weka bin in our department alone within two days, so it just goes to show how much we are diverting from landfill.” Waste services company director Patrick North said, if everybody plays their part we can look forward to the long-term sustainable future of the Marlborough Region. “While the hospital has always had a separate cardboard recycle service we believe we can reduce waste to landfill by a further 25 to 30 percent.” This will be monitored with monthly reporting back to NMDHB. “ We a r e p a s s i o n a t e a b o u t Marlborough, and passionate about recycling, we are proud to play our part,” said Patrick. “It’s about locals supporting local business, we all contribute to the long term environmental and economic sustainability of the region, and that’s a win-win for everyone.”

Batty about bats No one is sure of the exact population of long-tailed bats in Marlborough, but if it disappears, the whole world will lose out. Siobain Browning from Picton spoke to Annabelle Latz about her role in the project to save the long-tailed bat at Pelorus Bridge, to share her encouraging words about the quest to save this unique mammal. In 2005 the long tail bat made itself noticed in the Pelorus Bridge campground. There are less than 100 longtailed bats at Pelorus, part of a South Island population that is experiencing a desperate decline in numbers. They must be saved. Two years ago Forest and Bird started a trapping programme, in partnership with DOC and Ngati Kuia, to reduce the number of possums, stoats and rats, which are a threat. There are more than 1000 bat species in the world, but no other country has the long-tailed or the lesser short-tailed bat. “This is a really special country. We have many species that if we lose them, the whole world has lost them.” These bats are the only native land mammals to New Zealand. Short-tailed bats have higher population numbers than longtailed bats, but these days, short tailed bats are found in fewer but larger colonies. Long tailed bats have more pockets of populations, but each population has fewer bats in it. Siobain said just a few decades ago people would regularly see bats in Marlborough. “Today people barely even know that they should be here. It’s quite depressing to look at a map of where bats use to be, they were once found throughout New Zea-

land.” From Pelorus Bridge, the long-tailed bats can sometimes be spotted at night time, when they come out to eat. “They can eat between 2000 to 4000 insects in a night.” Bats also work as pollinators. “Everything is connected, and losing one species can have repercussions all through the system.” These bats are the only mammal in the world to hunt both on the ground and in the air. Siobain is a community relations ranger for DOC, based at the Picton ofﬁce, and has been living in Marlborough for the last year. As well as her involvement professionally with the project, she is also one of more than 20 volunteers who check the traps regularly on a rotational weekly basis.

“This is a really special country. If we lost it, the whole world has lost it.” “I’ve been so impressed with so many individuals and community groups in the Marlborough Sounds, there are just so many passionate people here.” There are nine set lines of traps, each with between 10 and 70 traps. Siobain checks her line of traps once a month, which takes her about three hours, taking her up to Trig K and the lookout track about Pelorus Bridge.

“ I t ’s one of the best bits of bush in the area. Anyone can do this, and it makes a walk worthwhile.” She said the different lines of traps vary in difficulty of terrain and length. “There’s something for everybody. My line has no bush bashing, but it’s quite a climb.” Siobain admitted it’s an advantage not to have a squeamish stomach. “I see lots of rats and mice. I take out the body, then put more bait in the trap and re-set it.” The rat traps are set with peanut butter and oats, stoats like dehydrated processed rabbit, while possums like apple dipped in cinnamon. The bodies are either tossed away, or sometimes the possum fur is used by people, and stoat tails will be sent to another project where they are made in to fishing flies. “It’s great to make use of the products.” Health and safety is a bit part of being a volunteer on the project. Siobain said personal locater beacons are given out to those on remote trails. “I like to get away and have some peace and quiet.” Some people also like to make a

people to explore the area, and experience the beauty she and the volunteers get to enjoy regularly. “There are so many people I feel don’t make the most of what is in their back yard.” The open day at 10am on Saturday September 15 will provide a chance to ﬁnd out what it is like to be a volunteer here. “It’s not that hard but it is very satisfying!”

All about attitude Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Brenna Nation says it is vital that people suffering from cancer have the chance to talk to survivors their own age. The Renwick resident, who has been here since last September, has recently turned 30. It was April 2007, and Brenna was just 24 years-old, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her first son Benji was five months old, and she had just finished breast feeding. Brenna has recently completed a Cancer Connect training course with the Cancer Society, which provides an easy way for cancer sufferers to get in contact with sufferers or former sufferers their own age. “It’s a way for people to find a real person to talk to.” On the two-day training course in Wellington, she said it gave a realisation of how many cancer types there are, with many sufferers finding it very hard to have someone to talk to. “Breast cancer is so in your face, it’s got quite a monopoly really, but there are so many other cancers out there that are not so public.” Living in Christchurch at the time when she was

diagnosed with cancer, medical trends leaned to the normality factor of Brenna finding a lump, given that she was young, and had recently finished breast feeding. “I was a bit worried, but I didn’t know how worried I should be.” She had a six week wait to see a specialist, who told her it was most likely a blocked milk duct. Brenna was determined to have that confirmed, so a core biopsy by ultra sound was taken, to be sure. “That afternoon they rang me, and said I was to bring somebody with me. I thought this can’t be good!” Brenna and her husband Andrew were told she had an aggressive form of breast cancer. “I said okay, now what, I just wanted to know what to do next.” A lumpectomy removed the lump from the right breast. She insisted both breasts were removed, and she would have reconstruction. “I was told a double mastectomy was too extreme. But I didn’t want the ongoing risk.” But as cancer was found in one of the four lymph nodes too, she knew it was for the best. It was a massive few months for the young mother, and Brenna remembers finding it hard to find someone to talk to, close to her own age, who had been through the same thing. “I knew there were more people out there.” At the time, Brenna was an administrative worker at a newspaper in Christchurch, so started blogging. It created a way for Brenna to find people to talk to, and help others. “I’m a really honest straight up person. I just kind of jumped on the bandwagon. I knew if I could help one person, my job was done, and I felt I could get something back.” Brenna wanted to make people aware that young healthy people get cancer too. “Life is not fair, it is what it is. But my positive

pened during her break from hormone treatment. They also have two year-old Jemima. “When I was sick I also met sick children, and they had the best attitude. They just lived for now. They don’t have the worry that adults create. There’s no reason why we can’t be like that.” She said being open about her cancer helped her and her family. “We were hand in hand and we tackled it together.” Brenna made sure she surrounded herself with positive people. “I don’t think I ever thought I might die, I don’t think it ever entered my head. Realistically, it just wasn’t an option.”

She remembers losing her hair. “It wasn’t that bad, I woke up and there was hair all over my pillow. I thought this is annoying!” Andrew shaved it off. “I was ﬁne with it. I had a really nice wig, but I didn’t wear it because I felt like I was hiding. I ﬁgured this is me, this is what I’m going through.” Brenna and Andrew married in February 2009, when she was pregnant with their second son Blake. “It was a huge shock to get pregnant again so soon,” she said, which hap-

Not your typical fair By Robbie Parkes You won’t see your typical jams and pickles on sale at the Tua Marina Craft Fair this weekend, but daffodils will certainly make an appearance. Now in its second year, the fair is bigger, with about 28 to 30 stalls to be set up, said organiser Margaret Foster. Last year $450 was donated to the Cancer Society from money raised at the event, and the same will happen this year. Cancer Society Marlborough centre manager Margot Wilson, said they will have a stand there with merchandise and daffodils for sale. “It’s just a good way for us to get out there in the

community.” “We just really appreciate it when a group such as Tua Marina, through their connections want to help us, it’s a really nice way of helping out.” Margaret said the previous year’s fair was successful so they would make it an annual event, which runs the weekend straight after Daffodil Day. “Last year was just absolutely incredible.” “The hall was full of people, we had them waiting in lines outside the door.” The Craft Fair will include rafﬂes, sausage sizzles, stalls with lavender products, knitting, pendants, wheatbags, puppets, wooden toys, felted slippers, and the

list goes on. “It’s all handmade by the people themselves.” The craft fair is just one of the events Margot said, volunteers will attend to help spread the Daffodil Day message. “On Friday, we’ll swing into action and people will be out on the day from eight in the morning.” “We’ll be looking close to 200 volunteers in every capacity on Friday, and we’re so very grateful to them.” There will entertainment and a BBQ in the Market St Forum on Friday from 11 am. The Tua Marina Craft Fair is on September 1 and 2, from 10am until 4pm at the Tua Marina Hall.

But Daffodil Day is about much more than raising funds. The people involved on the day are often in high spirits, donning a Cancer Society vest or in bright yellow fancy dress. That’s because Daffodil Day is as much about people having fun together, and a symbol of hope, as it is about fund-raising. Over 7,000 dedicated volunteers and hundreds of keen employees from the Cancer Society and its principal sponsor, The National Bank, will be out in force on a street this August.

The impact of cancer in NZ Each year around 21,000 people are diagnosed with cancer, with around 9000 people dying from cancer. The most commonly diagnosed cancer is prostate cancer with around 3300 men diagnosed. Colorectal and breast cancer were the next most commonly diagnosed cancers. The leading cause of cancer related death was due to lung cancer with around 1600 deaths. Second was colorectal cancer causing over 1200 deaths. For all adults with cancer, there was a statistically signiﬁcant improvement in survival between 1998–1999 and 2008–2009. Mastering the slopes Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Racing bibs get pulled on just once a year for many of the Masters skiers, and they always make a great social weekend of the Atomic Masters competitions at Rainbow Ski Area. Favourable weather conditions managed to hold out for the grand slalom and slalom events, which all took place on Saturday, attracting nearly 60 competitors. Sun reporter Annabelle Latz joined the skiers over a lunch of hot soup and sandwiches to ask them how their day was going. She had even braved the giant slalom course that morning, giving her a slightly educated idea of what all this ski racing fandom was about. Assistant organiser of the event, Kerry Stratford said there was a great turnout of competitors for both competitions, open to skiers aged 21 years-old and above. Despite the cloud slowly rolling in all day, he said everyone was enjoying themselves. Mike Shirer from Mapua has been racing for four years, and said snow conditions were good. “It’s a fast but soft course.” Allan Martella was helping on the start gate. “It’s great for people to support this sport, you can do it until you are eighty.” Alain Hauswirth said many of the Masters skiers had skied all over the world, but on a good day, Rainbow Ski Area was as good as any other ﬁeld. Garry Askew was the pioneer of Masters skiing in the region. The ﬁrst competition was in 1991, with just a handful of candidates. He said once the basic elements of skiing are gathered, anyone can do Masters skiing. “It’s a life time sport, it keeps you young,” said the 74 year-old with a grin on his face.

By Robbie Parkes Green-thumbed children can start digging out their tools for this year’s Spud in a Bucket competition. The contest is par t of the Marlborough A & P Association’s 140th annual show, and is now open to youngsters wishing to enter. Under the ‘Home Industries’ section, the Spud in a Bucket event challenges children to grow the biggest potatoes in time for the November 9 and 10 festival. ‘Home Industries’ organiser Katherine Dobby, said the competition has been put forward to allow the 90-day spuds to truly ﬂourish. The event reaps a decent number of potatoes that are

donated to the foodbank following the weigh-in. “It’s teaching them how to be self sufficient from a young age, and it’s instilling some important information in them too.” The contest is open to the first 100 children up to 16 years old, who can collect their spuds (donated by Feedlands) and buckets from Feedlands Ltd on High St. Entries need to be planted by September 1. T he pr ize money is sponsored by Sam’s Computer Clinic, with The Chocolate Shoppe, Topshots Photolab, Langwoods Photo Centre, and The Sewing Store sponsoring other prizes in the ‘Home Industries’ section.

Cupcakes appeal By Annabelle Latz Hundreds of cupcakes were making their way into work places and people’s homes on Monday, as part of SPCA’s cupcake appeal. Jess Monk is animal care manager at SPCA, and was busy spreading the sweet goodness. “The weather is a bit of a dampener, but I’m sure people

will come to morning tea and be hanging out for a cupcake on a day like this.” The cupcakes were sold for a donation, and their differing shapes and colours were thanks to the creative minds of people at Marlborough Vintners Hotel, Hotel d’Urville, New World and SPCA volunteer Sophie Matthews who
