No smoking Let’s keep it that way Photo and story by Robbie Parkes The Wairau Taniwha are making more than just a stand against smoking, they’re trying to get their team, their whanau and their stadium smokefree, and want to keep it that way. The team has imposed a non-smoking ban on themselves, keeping their smoking to outside of any practices or matches. The goal is to leave smoking at the door - crowd included. “It was all about having a healthy lifestyle because we held a big percentage of smokers,” said Powhiri Cooper, the team’s manager. “We’re making a stand here in Blenheim.” He said a lot of the players were heavy smokers before the ban but most have given up. Powhiri said the ban is about building healthy ideas within the community, and getting the boys onto it was the first step. “We wanted a clean image of it,” he said. “Just promotion for our kids too.” The ban has been in place since the day they started, and has shown a lot of progress, said Powhiri. He said it is good to see it working, especially as the guys have really stepped up their fitness on the field. Taniwha player Josh Samuels is still a smoker but said the team mentality has definitely pushed the ban. In that team environment, the other guys will have a go if you do smoke and can’t keep up on the field, he said. “Definitely they push you in a way.” He said once a few guys got into the habit of not smoking, it soon became widespread. Stephanie Samuels, mum to Josh, Luke and Ceyphus, all in the team, said it was great to see the ban enforced. “I’m a smoker myself, I used to smoke 20

$50 off selected boots

a day but I totally support that,” she said. “I believe that there should be a ban when they go to practice, any team, the Kaupapa would be good for any team.” She said the ban works so well because it helps to lead the community in healthy ideals. But, Stephanie said it is a massive struggle, especially for those who have had smoking in their lives for such a long time.

“My boys are smokers, it just breaks my heart but you can’t break the cycle,” she said. “It’s an addiction, it’s a total addiction.” She said it would be great to have an outright ban of smoking and cigarettes in the country, but even with prices on the rise, that demand is not easing. “You’ll find that people are buying more.” “It’s not that it’s getting dearer, they need that hit.”

Kiwis may need more money for funerals

According to recent Department of Work and Income statistics, nearly one in five New Zealanders is too poor to die. A total of 5473 funeral grants were made over the 12 months leading to March, equalling $9.8 million in costs, and recent Statistics New Zealand death data shows that 30,080 people died here in 2011. Those figures together show that 20% of Kiwis need financial assistance with funeral arrangements.

Barry Hayman.

Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors here in

Blenheim is seeing those figures reflected in their own business. “Certainly people are more conscious,” said Ma nager a nd funeral director Barry Hayman. He said that people are definitely more mindful of costs nowadays, especially given the economic climate. “Some people want to spend the top dollar but some are certainly more conscious,” he said. “There are more families that go for grants.” He said they do see cases

regularly each month where families need a grant to pay for their departed family member, but they are always made aware of the alternative processes. “We would certainly guide families through the arrangements, and certainly costs do add up.” “I think its throughout New Zealand and probably further afield.” Barry said at the end of the day, families are choosing what they can afford, and are being more cost conscious in that regard.

By Annabelle Latz All locals are being encouraged to voice their thoughts on public safety in Marlborough. Marlborough businesses and agencies are working together to make Marlborough internationally recognised as a safe community. Input from the public is a vital link in this project, working towards The World Health Organisation (WHO) Safe Communities model, which is about promoting and building a strong sense of community safety. Tomorrow brings an opportunity for anyone to participate in a wider community meeting, to help determine which areas of safety should become the focus of collective action. Paul Johnson, manager of Safer Communities, is working alongside Community Constable Russ Smith, and a number of others, to lead Marlborough into a safe future. There have been 10 proposed categories developed, which now must be put to the public, so a working draft can be developed. Paul and Russ are asking for lots of public support at the meeting tomorrow, and one next Wednesday, so all areas of community safety can be discussed. “We want to get a really diverse group of the public along to the meetings so we get good input,” said Russ. “Let’s have a review of what is working well in Marlborough, and what can be improved,” Russ Smith and Paul Johnson want the public to give their said Paul. thoughts on public safety.

Public health, council, ACC, churches, rural representatives, and Chamber of Commerce are some groups making up the team working together for the WHO project. Gaining accreditation to this model will be great for business, tourism, and international recognition that Marlborough is a great place to visit. Tasman and Nelson have recently received their accreditation. With the huge wine industry here, community safety here has to take into account the transient nature of the district. “Vineyards that have developed have changed the nature of the workforce,” said Paul. Rule books identifying our social laws have been produced in 18 languages, and made available to all seasonal workers. “It’s about identifying the great stuff in the community and identifying the gaps,” said Russ. The meeting tomorrow, Thursday May 10, will be at the Clubs of Marlborough Hall, 42 Alfred St, Blenheim. The next meeting is on Wednesday, May 16, 7pm-9pm, at the St John training rooms, 93 Seymour St, Blenheim. Breaking the barrier Serious accident waiting to happen By Annabelle Latz Phil Brown, of Phil Brown Motors, is worried there will be a serious accident at the roundabout by his car yard, very soon. He has recently seen three trucks fail to stop for the warning bells that sound for an approaching train, at the Main St roundabout where his car yard is. They have subsequently wiped out the barrier arms, and continued to drive over the crossing. “Is there enough time for them to get through?” he asked. He also said cars rush over the railway line when the bells start to sound, because they don’t want to wait. “The record is about seven cars rushing over the line before the

arms come down.” The roundabout includes four entrances, five exits and one

railway line. “I reckon I could get rid of my cars and put a grandstand here and sell tickets for people to watch the traffic!” The barriers are always replaced the same day they are broken. “There’s always a traffic build up, the whole thing is quite a process.” A KiwiRail spokesperson said barrier arms are designed to break if hit, and cost around $400 to reinstate if broken clear of the track, and around $2000 if they need replacing, depending on the length of the arm. Lights start flashing five seconds before the barrier arms come down. “Barrier breakages are caused

typically when a heavy vehicle driver fails to take sufficient notice of the lights starting to flash. The bells at any level crossing are primarily installed as a warning to pedestrians and cyclists and are not designed to be loud enough to be heard inside a vehicle with its windows closed.” The roundabout has been in use since September 2000. “There has been an unusual “cluster” of five breakage incidents since the beginning of December.” There are 1360 public road level crossings in New Zealand, and 20% of these are protected by barrier arms plus flashing lights and bells.

Churches pre-empt Council earthquake assessments By Robbie Parkes Following the Christchurch earthquakes, risk assessments of buildings all around the country are underway, and the churches in Blenheim are pre-empting these processes. Both Catholic and the Anglican Church authorities have made steps to get their Blenheim churches assessed before any Council involvement. “We decided we needed to know reliably just what the earthquake

risks were with our buildings,” said Paul Bayliss, general manager of the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington. He said they set off to run their own process prior to any Council authority involvement because they have a responsibility to their parishioners. “When we get results we advise the local authority in due course,” he said. Paul said assessments have been made for insurance purposes too. “We just decided to be proactive and

I guess it’s driven by the Christchurch experience.” Likewise, Anglican Diocese of Nelson finance manager Wayne Harding said they are going through risk assessment steps before any Council involvement. “The Trust Board, who is the legal owner, is going through to process their engineer’s reports on all the churches,” he said. “The Council has their statute process they’re going through and we’ve started that process, independent of that.” Marlborough District Council resource management projects officer Neil Morris said their involvement at this stage is minimal. “We’ve had some contact with the Catholic Diocese but are not looking at any of their buildings,” he said. He also said that the Council will not be looking at churches outside of Blenheim, which includes the Wairau Valley Anglican Parish in Renwick. The Parishes Vicar, Steve Allcutt said the Diocese is looking after outlying parishes such as theirs but the fact that the Council doesn’t include them in any assessments does seem unfair. “I take umbrage to that, we’re still paying rates,” he said. “Other than just wanting to save some money, I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t do something.”

St Mary’s Church in Maxwell Rd will be closed shortly f o r e ar th quake strengthening.

Wayne said the Diocese will certainly look at each of those Church buildings outside the area, but to exclude any is up to the Council. Paul said the practicality of Council assessments on those buildings can be futile, especially when their church in Renwick, consists of a small building with a tin roof.

“We deal with about 23 territorial local authorities, and each of them has a variant on how to apply their own policy,” he said. A number of churches in the area have already been deemed an earthquake risk and will be closing their doors.

Free blood pressure check New World is calling for Blenheim residents to get a free blood pressure check on Saturday May 12. The free checks are available at New World Blenheim, and are part of the Stroke Foundation’s national Blood Pressure Awareness campaign, aimed at lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of stroke for Kiwis around the country. Foodstuffs New Zealand Managing Director Steve Anderson says, “This is the third year our New World stores have been supporting the campaign. We’re really pleased to be able to do our part in helping the Stroke Foundation to raise awareness of the link between high blood pressure and stroke

by providing the locations for these free tests.” “Being 100 percent New Zealand owned and operated, each of our stores is an integral part of their local community. That’s why we’re calling on Blenheim residents to pop down to New World Blenheim on Saturday 12 May for a free, fast, and painless blood pressure check,” says Anderson. Information about blood pressure and other risk factors for stroke will be provided during the check, and people with raised blood pressure will be referred to their GPs for medical advice and treatment. For more information, please check in store at New World Blenheim.

Filming with a difference By Annabelle Latz Storytelling holds the power to unleash a better world, and increase visibility of young people making a positive impact in New Zealand. A group of high school students will gather at Marlborough Boys’ College tomorrow, for a day of film making discussion and observation. Hosted by Inspiring Stories Charitable Trust, which was set up in Wellington last year, the trust promotes young New Zealanders to unleash their potential to change the world through film making. It has partnered up with New Zealand Film Commission for 2012. Scott Webley and Logan Anderson are Year 13 media studies students at Marlborough

Boys’ College, who will be joining Marlborough Girls’ College and Queen Charlotte College students tomorrow. Scott, who enjoys being behind the camera and collecting footage, is documenting fellow school mate Hugh Gilchrist, a young musician in a band who wants to pursue a career in that field. Logan, who favours the editing side of film making, is producing a documentary asking other Marlborough Boys’ College students, and staff about their life at the College. Logan said the workshop will allow them to be more objective in their film making, adding new skills to what they learn in the classroom. He said the College and their teacher Dan Searle provide

great equipment and facilities. “Mr Searle is a great inspiration, our class is really fun, with a bit of banter but we get lots done.” Scott said they are encouraged to think about how their documentaries will affect society, and they can take these thoughts to the workshop tomorrow. A film screening is taking place at the Marlborough District Library tomorrow evening (Thursday) from 7-9pm; documentary-style short films made by young New Zealanders. The Trust is also holding a film competition, open to all young film makers. Registrations close on July 31. For more information, visit www.inspiringstories.org.nz

It was a clean slate for the twenty ‘Off license’ premises who were approached by under age potential buyers last Friday evening, May 4. A Control Purchase Operation [CPO] was completed by Police, with the assistance of NMDHB Public Health. The operation targeted premises in Blenheim, Renwick and Picton. Two Police volunteers, under 18 years of age, visited 20 Off license premises and attempted to make an alcohol purchase. These premises included Supermarkets, Four Squares, Convenience Stores, Bottle Stores and stand alone licensed outlets. At all of the premises, the volunteers were asked for identification. When they informed the server that they did not have any, the sale was refused. Police are pleased that the premises all have a system which prevents young people purchasing alcohol. “They were asking the question about identification, which is really good,” said Senior Sergeant Naera Parata.

By Annabelle Latz Nicolas and Shana Perez are used to being woken up by speeding cars. But the Ford Falcon ute that drove through their garage early last Friday morning was a surprise. The house they rent on Howick Rd was left with a gaping hole, a crushed lawnmower, a dented car, and a burst water pipe. Shana is eight months pregnant. “The first concern was the baby,” said Shana. They also have a two year old toddler, Téo, who slept through the whole episode. The ute sped through the neighbours’ fence, and over and into the Perez’s garage. The driver and passenger were in their mid twenties. Nicolas said the driver was clearly drunk. The police, a St John ambulance and two fire engines were quickly on the scene. The driver was subsequently processed for drink driving and an evidential breath test produced a positive result of 1100 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. At about 4am the passenger of the ute turned up again, looking for his dog. “I want these drivers to slow down. They could have died, and they could have killed us,” said Shana. Nicolas is from France, and moved to Blenheim in 2008 with Shana, from the UK. “They think nothing will happen to them,

they think they are invincible. They have just got to wake up and think,” he said. Erin Evans lives next door, and now has a broken fence. She was sad for her partner Stephen, who had put a lot of time and effort into the front garden next to the fence, which is now destroyed. They have five children. “But that is material, and we are lucky that none

of us got hurt.” Constable Michelle Stagg of Blenheim Police said the problem of driving behaviour like this is not confined to Howick Rd, and is not necessarily limited to ‘boy racers.’ “Occupants of houses around most of the main thoroughfares through town would give the same messages around driver behaviour,” she said.

Stage challenge steps up Photo and story by Robbie Parkes Bohally Intermediate are upping their game for this years Stage Challenge with their first full dress rehearsal yesterday and the competition approaching fast. “We entered what is called the under the Raw open section which means we’re going competitive,” said co-ordinator Mandy Aldridge-Neal. “That’s the reason we’ve really

stepped it up,” she said. Sarah Tredinnick and Emily Stein are choreographing the perfomance and the group will be practicing even through school time and the weekends. The school hasn’t entered the competition since 2009, but with the big performance in Nelson happening on the 15th, practice is key right now. Fifty-seven year 7’s and 8’s have been working hard for the past

eight weeks on their performance which is themed around what the kids are actually learning in school. “They are looking at what it is to be involved during the wars,” said Mandy. “They’re actually telling the story of New Zealand identity,” she said. “We want to make clear links, we want to tell a story.” She said the kids are always

interested in performing and this is their real chance to excel. Mandy said they seem to be the only competitive school from Marlborough going to the competition and will be competing against five other schools. “It’s an exceptionally long day but one full of buzz and excitement for what they’re achieving.” Tickets for the Nelson competition can be bought from Ticketek.

Sun readers have their say... Q: Do you think you will be affected if New Zealand Post cuts deliveries from 6 days to 3 days?

Chris Brunt Blenheim

Grant Robinson Blenheim

Sandra Kirk Blenheim

Alisa O’Kane Blenheim

Olwyn Patchett Blenheim

Andy Cowe Blenheim

I won’t be affected if they do. I only get mail around three times a week. When you know you need to send something for it to get there on a certain date you make allowances to post it earlier so it does make it on time.

The cut back should have been made a long time ago; there isn’t much of a demand for six days a week anymore. It’ll be a shame for people who lose hours or their jobs but that’s the only downside I can see.

I don’t have much use for mail anymore, with the exception of bills I don’t get any mail. The only shame will be for the people who lose jobs from the cut backs.

We expect to get our mail six times a week and so we should. Businesses are only in it for the money so they don’t feel bad for cutting back on hours or their staff. A loss of jobs is a loss of respect for them; there are plenty of people relying on them.

It won’t affect me at all as I don’t get much mail these days. But causing people to lose thier jobs is unfair and wrong.

I don’t get that much mail anymore so I can’t see it affecting me too much.

Station may not have an executive Boardroom but what were we paying for, a visitor centre or a corporate suite for the few and famous? One suspects the rental of the old may well be less then the new and that does not take into consideration depreciation, repairs and maintenance (paid for by Rail NZ presumably) and the cost of capital that could have been used for more community related needs. It does make you wonder doesn’t it? Well, it’s time for public comment on the long term plan and the elections for Council are not that far away either. i Tried

Dear Ed Take a long hard look next time you are down Grove Road way at the beautifully restored Blenheim Railway Station. It looks fantastic. That is, of course, providing the new i Site does not obscure the view of a slice of Marlborough’s history. Then consider the $1.5mill of your rates that went towards the new triangular i Sore which could have been accommodated in the refurbished slice of history. It even has public toilets which you don’t get in the new building unless you are staff! OK, so the Railway

Dear Ed In support of Danny Boulton’s letter about the process not favouring the objector, at the public meeting the Environmental Protection Authority outlined the way the process was set up. The EPA was at pains to say the process was “without prejudice.” I raised the point the process was flawed and prejudiced right from the start. The government through the then minister of fisheries Phil Heatley have publicly lauded fish farming and aquaculture.

But the government’s own cabinet have appointed the “board of inquiry” to assess submissions and make a decision. Already the aquaculture officer with NIWA has proclaimed King Salmon’s plans. Again the grubby hand of government. Again government prejudice tainting what should be a democratic process. And as Danny Boulton mentioned, I had “trouble downloading the submission form”. Others I have spoken too found the same. Tony Orman

Pedestrian crossing or not Dear Ed Please can somebody lessen my confused state about pedestrian crossings. Blenheim’s town centre is full of raised brick pathways across the road. Some have white painted lines, some do not. When I am a pedestrian, I am never sure which ones I have right-of-way at. And as a driver, I am never sure what ones I need to stop at to let pedestrians walk across.

It seems that all pedestrians and drivers have similar tracks of thought, as I often observe hesitant behaviour from both parties. A clarification on what acts as a pedestrian crossing, and what is merely a speed bump that requires no pedestrian right-of-way, would be much appreciated. Yours hesitantly Annabelle

Salmon farm expansion plan Dear Ed I note an American “Food and Water Watch” says in its recent seafood guide on farmed salmon. “Don’t be fooled by ‘organic salmon’it’s usually farmed internationally and is not controlled by US standards.” Expansion plans by King Salmon will despoil the public’s Sounds visually and the fish faeces and food waste will pollute the waters. So King Salmon want fast current sites. All it does is spread the gunk akin to sweeping the dirt under the carpet. I hope the Marlborough District Council stand firm and strong in the face of the corporate giant, owned by the Tiong family of Malaysia who are already here with thousands of hectares of pine forests, having milled rain forests elsewhere. There is certainly not much in the deal for Marlborough. DM

Sufferers dealing with arthritis alone By Annabelle Latz A group of arthritis sufferers met up for the last time on yesterday afternoon, before the winter chill sets in, for some housie. Jeanette McKay and Anne Adams would like to see more people join up. Jeanette is the youngest member in the group of about 20. At 49 years old, she developed Osteoarthritis. That was six years ago, and the Springlands resident misses not having the Arthritis New Zealand office here. It closed mid last year, due to funding cuts. Over the past year, Arthritis New Zealand has managed to save over $750,000 in ongoing expenses by shutting regional offices. A nurse used to visit from Nelson for two days each month, giving free one-hour consultations. “Every month there were bookings made, at least 10 people would visit,” said Jeanette. Anne Adams is 75, and she devel-

oped Rheumatoid arthritis when she was 43. “It’s just not the same now, I think it’s such a shame.” Noel Frater has been coordinating the Arthritis NZ fundraising appeal in Marlborough for 10 years. He hoped the appeal would continue to be supported. Arthritis New Zealand Chief Executive Sandra Kirby said Marlborough volunteers are still needed. More than $14,500 was raised in the region from the 2011 Appeal. Sandra said an Arthritis Educator will visit Blenheim and Kaikoura at least four times a year. The next scheduled visit is 11 – 13 June, including a seminar on osteoarthritis. People can also call 0800 663 463. “Unless there is guaranteed ongoing funding, and a demand for services in Marlborough that justifies a permanent presence, we are unlikely to reopen an office.” For more information on the social group, phone Anne Adams, 578 4742.

Mothers’ Day brunch Renwick Plunket is hosting a Mothers’ Day brunch at the Marlborough Club from 10am to 12noon. A relaxing restaurant area will be set up for mothers to sit and enjoy, while children can enjoy their own play area. Renwick Plunket committee president Jennifer Potts says the brunch is the perfect opportunity for mothers of all ages to spend

quality time together with their children. “Tickets cost $25 per adult and $10 per child and include a drink and meal and can be purchased from the Clubs of Marlborough or by phoning 021 209 1129.” Money raised from the brunch will go toward Renwick Plunket’s ‘Snug as a Bug’ campaign, supplying woolen blankets and singlets to babies within Marlborough.

German visitor Andreas Hahn was sentenced to a four month jail term in the Christchurch District Court last week after taking four endangered jewelled geckos from Banks Peninsula. The current maximum penalties under the Wildlife Act for taking protected wildlife are a fine of $100,000 or 6 months in prison. Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson is currently working on a Bill that would double the maximum penalty to $200,000 and lift the maximum jail term to three years. This stronger penalty regime also means convicted smugglers would not be able to return to New Zealand for 10 years.

Chris Downs Does your business have an occupational Safety & Health plan in place? According to occupational health nurse and consultant Christobel Downs, a well thought through health and safety policy is key to running a successful business. “Both businesses and individuals are personally liable for the many eventualities that can happen in the workplace, so having safety policies, procedures and actions in place will help to prevent illness and injury. “The truth is, you just can’t afford not to,” Chris says. Chris owns and operates her business Safety

& Health Services from her Blenheim home and regularly visits clients in the workplace. “One area of my business I really enjoy is spending one on one time with clients, assessing their workstations to make sure chairs and desks are at the right height, computers are at the right angle and any repetitive actions while sitting at the desk are not creating an injury risk to the individual,” she says. Chris also provides workplace assessments in all areas from factory production through to computer workstations, runs in-house training sessions and advises on practical H&S Plan writing for businesses. With the colder weather moving in, so are the pesky critters which invade our homes for food and shelter. In the battle to help residents and businesses control rodents and insects is Alan Robinson, owner of The Spiderman Pest Control. Alan purchased the business in 2010 and has continued to provide a specialist service in domestic and commercial management of spiders, flies, ants, cockroaches and rodents to the whole of Marlborough. Being locally owned and operated means Alan is just a phone call away and carries his own workmanship guarantee. Heading into winter Alan says cockroaches have kept him busy, with many householders wanting their firewood stacks sprayed. “It’s easy to carry them in with a basket of wood, and once in they can hide in every possible crack including fridge seals, ovens, microwaves and anywhere they can be close to water,” he says. For those purchasing firewood, bags of pine cones or stacking bark now is the best time to have The Spiderman Pest Control visit your home. “If you can have your outdoor areas treated for cockroaches, it will help to prevent them coming inside and control the spread,” Alan says. Being involved in an accident is stressful enough and the last thing you need is confusion over which panel repairer can guarantee their work for insurance purposes. This is where Blenheim business Forbes Panel & Alignment steps in, taking the hassle out of the repair process. “We can do any insurance work as we carry our own guarantee. “Simply bring in your vehicle after the accident occurs and we will help you with the claim process,” owner Shaun Forbes says. Shaun and wife Trudy have owned the business since April 2003, first setting up in Grove Road before relocating to their current premises at Sutherland Terrace. Forbes Panel & Alignment specialises in panel beating, all types of rust repair and warrant of fitness repairs, plastic welding, fibre glass repairs and full panel repairs on all types of vehicles.

In the workshop Fabian, who has been with the business for three years, is a trained wheel alignment technician using the John Beam four-wheel alignment machine to service light vehicles. Co-worker Luke is working toward completing his apprenticeship in panel beating after starting out as a part time worker five years ago. Together the Forbes Panel & Alignment team goes out of their way to take the hassle out of panel repairs by providing a professional service and even offering a pick up and delivery service. There are also two courtesy cars available for customers while their own cars are being repaired. “Nothing is a problem, simply call in and see us and we will do our best to get you back on the road as quick as possible,” Shaun says.

Stong results in the first of the Winter Duathlon series By Steve Smith The first round of the Winter Duathlon series was matched with nea r-perfect weather conditions on Sunday. The long hours involved in vintage did not hinder pre-race favourite Jeremy McKenzie’s form in the long distance race. Leading from the start, he had more than a two minute lead on the rest of the field when he jumped on his bike after a 16.38 minute 5km run. By the end of the cycle this had blown out to five minutes and he powered away to win in a time of 1.07.48. Leatham Landon-Lane had finished the first run in a group of three who only had a second between them but showed his class on the bike and comfortably took second place in a time of 1.16.26 from Ryan Lock who had been 5th after the first run. The Women’s race was a far closer event. The young up and coming Jess Barnes was favourite for the race but had to be content coming second after the first run leg. However, a quick transition saw her gain a lead of approximately 100m on the bike from Natasha Ford and this helped her to eventually take an advantage of 4 minutes heading into the final run.

There was a strong turnout at the first of the Wiinter Duathlon series in the Wither Hills on Sunday. The runners at the front, left to right, are Ray Boardman (QwikKiwi outfit), Ryan Lock (NZ outfit) and Martyn Crossley. While Ford did gain some time it was not enough to catch Barnes who finished in a time of 1.26.52 with Ford just over three minutes back with 1.29.58. Anna Lee was third in a time of 1.37.35. Rachael Bell was the first home in the Mountain bike section in a time of 1.48.50. In the medium race run over a course of 2.5 km run, 16 km cycle, and 2.5 km run Connor Guillemot was the quickest athlete in both the Mountain bike and Road bike races finishing in a time of 1.01.33 followed by

Fergus Greer, 1.04.03, and his brother James in 1.09.38. In the short race over 2.5 km run, 8 km cycle and 1 km run Alex Connor-McLean emulated McKenzie to lead from start to finish and won in a time of 39.21. Francesca Crossley was second in 40.55 and Anna barnes the younger sister of Jess showed enough to suggest a sibling rivalry may develop with a very credible finish in 43.13. The next event is on June 24 at the same venue and the long race will be run on handicap.

Mixed results for Marlborough cyclists By Annabelle Latz It was a mixed bag of results from Marlborough’s cyclists at the RaboDiret National Club Road Championship in Hawke’s Bay at the weekend. After last Thursday’s time trails, Friday and Sunday was set aside for the road race category. Georgia Catterick had a strong finish in her first season riding under-17 grade, crossing the line in 12th place, part of the front bunch. Her brother Brodie unfortunately had to pull out of his race,

suffering cramp, after a strong start where he had made the breakaway bunch. Peter Crampton finished 16th place, in the second bunch, and Leatham Landon-Lane finished in 35th place. Martin Fletcher finished in 23rd place, managing to stick with the lead bunch until just over threequarters way through the race. “That’s the best I’ve done, I’m very pleased, and was only two minutes behind the lead bunch.” He said the weather was faultless on Friday, when they all had

their road race, except for Ben Verhof who raced on Sunday, but did not complete the race. Martin said the fields were strong, attracting about 35 to 40 riders for each race. There was a good mix of flat and hill riding. “It was certainly a lot hillier than a lot of the races here,” he said. The next couple of months will be spent riding for pleasure, enjoying down-time before the cycling season kicks off again after the colder months.
