By Celeste Lodewyk Mel Greenwood came close to pulling out of the Beavertown Blenheim Bride of the Year 2012 show, but is now thanking her lucky stars that she did not. Mel was named the winner of the show on Saturday night, much to the delight of her husband Hamish. For Mel it was simply a chance to wear her dress again so when her name was called out as the first place getter, shock and amazement set in. Continued page 2.

Guardian of the Sounds group appeal to public By Annabelle Latz Scientific research is expensive but essential, if the Marlborough Sounds is to avoid being a giant salmon farm. Guardian of the Sounds chairman Peter Beech (pictured right) said it is a race against time and money to oppose King Salmon’s proposal to extend its salmon farming operation. “We need to fund scientific experts, because that’s the only way we can win this case.” Pet e r is ple a d i ng w it h t h e Marlborough community to continue supporting the fundraising efforts of these groups. “I’m just appealing to people to look at the Save Our Sounds website, and the Facebook page. Join SOS and donate to the cause.” Guardian of the Sounds group
has been working closely with Save Our Sounds group to fund scientific analysis of the Marlborough Sounds,
for next month’s hearing. “A small handful of us are trying to hold back this huge tidal wave.” The case is with the Environmental Protection Agency, and submitters’ evidence is due on July 27. Peter said the recent revelation that New Zealand King Salmon’s farm at Waihinau Bay has gone ‘code red’ after a higher than normal amount of fish have been dying has brought little comfort to him, in the group’s bid to stop the company from expanding. “It’s really disturbing that King Salmon can lose half a million fish or more, and not be able to tell the public why all these fish have died.” He said there will be a reason why, but NZKS would have chosen not to share the information, in fear of damaging its reputation.
Peter described the mystery as NZKS’s “dirty little secret.” The Sun tried to contact NZKS for comment, but all staff concerned was unavailable for comment at the time. Peter said having Marlborough District Council, Department of Conservation, and local iwi groups on its side added confidence, leading up to the hearings date in Marlborough next month. Peter admitted that taking on a multi-million dollar internationally majority-owned company like NZKS was very tough. “The only thing we can really deal with is science. Research costs an absolute fortune. NZKS has $10 million to play with, and we can’t even afford a lawyer.”
Bride show - best yet Continued from page 1 “I think Hamish and I were both shocked, we still are,” she laughs. “I didn’t enter the show to win, just to have a fun day in my dress.” Already Mel has put one of her prizes to good use. “One of the first things I did was book tickets to go see Ben Harper perform with my travel voucher. “All of the prizes I received were amazing and it took a good half hour to look through them. Local businesses were very generous in their donations,” she says. Show organiser Carol Taylor says this year’s show, the 10th anniversary, was “outstanding”.

“The judges remarked to me that this year was the hardest ever to judge and their marking was so close between the brides. “Each of the girls looked spectacular and had groomed themselves from head to foot, and in my eyes there were many deserving brides,” she says. Judging the event were Arthur Devine, Julie Penman, Ray McCormick, Carol Vercoe and Melissa Ruffell. “I wish to thank the judges, the sponsoring businesses, the community and the brides for contributing toward making this year’s show the best yet,” Carol says.

That wish has been granted, with work on the Springlands site for the proposed Speight’s Ale House predicted to be underway soon. As developer of the bar and restaurant on Middle Renwick Rd next to Countdown supermarket, John can now move onto the next stage of development. “It is exciting times.” Resource and discharge consents were granted by the Marlborough District Council last Friday, and
the decision was made public on Monday. John said floor plans are 99 per cent done, and pricing work will begin soon. Tenders will be offered to local building companies, and will take place during the next month. “The cost will be well into the millions of dollars with the fitting of the bar and everything else.” He said a lot of work was carried out for the consent process - looking thoroughly at areas involving noise control, traffic volumes and roading - so the consent conditions given were not a surprise.

Conditions include doors be kept shut from 10pm, deliveries occur only between 7am and 10pm, and a two-metre high acoustic fence to block noise. “They were all things that we had offered in the consent. I had a group of people who did a really thorough job.” He predicts doors will open to
the public at the beginning of next year. “In the next six to eight weeks I hope to get things started.” Marlborough Heating and Plumbing will also be involved in the development. “There will be lots of innovation. Lion Breweries is very pleased with it.”
Katie makes first arrest Photo and story Annabelle Latz Stuart Johnson and his dog Katie like their peaceful Saturday mornings. But one recent Saturday provided a trend of a different kind. “I was sitting at the table in the sun and I saw a young man come running down into our section, and jump the fence.” It was just after 9am when the disruption occurred for the Avening Close resident. His section backs onto the reserve at the De Castro subdivision. Katie, his Schnauzer, was also taken by surprise. Stuart went outside, and peered over his fence to see a person hiding in the bushes. At the same time two policemen came walking over, and without saying a word Stuart pointed to the bushes. “As soon as they knew I was pointing at the bushes, they came running. The policemen yelled out to the youth to come forward
because they had dogs.” With this excitement Katie started barking. “The guy shot up saying ‘I’m coming out!’ He thought the barking from Katie was a police dog.” Stuart said Katie’s barks were very angry at this point. “She just let loose, barking and barking.” The youth was arrested at the time. Moments earlier the 17 year-old crashed the car he was driving into a power pole on Avening Close, then abandoned it and ran through a series of back yards, before hiding in the bushes. He appeared in The Blenheim Court on Monday, pleading guilty to the two charges of Driving with Excess Breath Alcohol (his level was 840 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, but his limit is 0), and Careless Driving. He was sentenced to six months disqualification, nine months supervision, and is to undertake alcohol and drug counselling.

By Robbie Parkes Crowds of eager exercise buffs made their way through the doors of Blenheim’s latest gym on Saturday to get their fitness fix. After a five-week fitout, 24hour gym Snap Fitness on Grove Rd held its grand opening. “It’s gone good, we should open with about 500 members,” said Korey Gibson, holder of exclusive New Zealand rights for the gym franchise. “Blenheim people are lovely, and they seem to like what we’re doing.” Families with kids, couples, and even a few older clients turned up on the day to sign up or go through the induction process.
Staff from The Rock radio station were there working the barbecue while the Classic Hits crew were handing out Subway vouchers. “It’s a good quality product that doesn’t cost you much,” said Korey. “It’s fantastic and there’s no joining fee so the cost was certainly an invitation,” said Sheryl Ruffell who recently joined the gym. The wide variety of stands and products on show at the 2012 Marlborough Home and Garden Show packed out the Stadium 2000 indoor courts.
By Robbie Parkes Record numbers of attendees gave exhibitors at the 2012 Marlborough Home and Garden Show something to celebrate at the weekend. Over 6,000 people came through the doors of Stadium 2000, similar numbers to the 2009 show. “There was a good increase on the number of people who attended last year,” said Anne Joll of Jade Promotions, which organise the event. “People were really happy, some people sold out of product and others said they found good leads.” She said the market has been tough, but from the success this year, other local businesses will be able to see the benefits of exhibiting at the show.
A range of products such as heat pumps, electric knife sharpeners, shammy cloths and garlic salt were on display. Darryl and Cecilia Norman of GroutPro Marlborough worked their first stall this year. “It’s very well organised and every stand is full, and that shows the popularity of it,” said Cecilia, on the day. “It just allows people to wander around at their leisure to renovate their homes and gardens.” She said the Home Show is about demonstrating their wares to the customer face-to-face. “People are often reserved about making that phone call and inviting people into their homes.” “It breaks the ice,” said Darryl.

Local wine proves strong competition Eight Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wines have received awards at the 2012 San Francisco International Wine Competition. The show awarded 13 Double Gold awards to the Sauvignon Blanc variety, the majority of which came from Marlborough. Saint Clair Family Estate won the Best of Nation Trophy NZ for the second year, along with two Double Gold awards. The competition has been running for 32 years, and this year a record number of wines were judged. Over 4,556 wines from 1,300 wineries across 29 different countries were entered in the competition. New location, new look for SBS By Robbie Parkes After a long time in the pipeline, Blenheim SBS bank’s new building has officially opened. Staff, customers, and Makos players were present when Mayor Alistair Sowman cut the ribbon on Monday morning. The branch moved from their former Market St address to a bigger set-up in the Stirling Sports building on the corner of Market St and Main St. Long serving customers Tom and Nola Hurford were invited along with one of the Bank’s youngest clients, Harrison Kirk’, to commemorate the occasion and cut the cake. Tom and Nola have been SBS customers since the 1980’s, both in Christchurch and Blenheim. “It’s a pleasure to come down here and see their much larger premises,” said Tom. Makos players Hayden Cripps, Bryce Heem, Tim Berry and Vernon Fredericks handed cake out to the Bank’s new neighbours to celebrate the opening. Extensive earthquake strengthening and interior work has been done to the new location over the last eight weeks. Local architect Tim Barton designed the interior layout. Manager Greg Stretch said the higher profile site was fantastic, and will be a great location for further development.

I think that if you dress for the weather it’s not so bad.
The weather has been terrible. I’ll come in if I have stuff to do in town and I am glad to have a heater in my car.
I’m sometimes less motivated to go out in the cold. But I’m prepared with more layers of clothing.
I don’t find that it affects me much. I’ll go into town when I have to, but I make sure to dress warmer. It’s certainly been cold, but other places are worse off.
I’ve just moved from Christchurch so compared to the cold and snow down there this isn’t so bad.

I would challenge her to name one new event that she has instigated that has brought additional tourists/ revenue to Marlborough and hence justify her enormous cost to the Shire. Vicky’s musical success Two-time Queen Elizabeth II Music Fund Award recipient and Blenheim girl, Vicky Mack talks to Robbie Parkes about her musical success. Routine seems to be the key ingredient for accomplished musician Vicky Mack who received her second Queen Elizabeth II Music Fund Award last Friday. Vicky, 18 starts her day at 4:45 am with an hour of violin followed by the gym, and piano if she has time. Then it’s straight into the university books. Vicky studies Business Management at Waikato University, majoring in Accounting. She manages to squeeze in a couple of violin papers too. “It’s good when it pays off.” At Marlborough Girls’ College, playing both violin and piano demanded early mornings.
“And n o w I’m at uni it’s earlier.” “ T here’s been so m a n y moments when I wanted to quit because it was quite stressful at college.” She had regular school exams, music theory, as well as her Trinity College of London Grade 8 violin and piano exams. “It was way too much.” A lot of serious talks with her parents about dropping an instrument didn’t deter Vicky from continuing with both. “My parents have always been so sup-
portive.” “If I had dropped one I wouldn’t be who I am today.” After nine years of piano and 11 years of violin, that dedication has paid off. Vicky’s second QEII award came from receiving Distinction for Grade 8 piano, and her first was for Distinction in Grade 8 violin last year. Kaikoura and Marlborough District Councils administer the award. She shared this year’s award with Marlborough Girls’ College head girl Olivia Sheat. “I worked hard, but I wasn’t really thinking about the award so much.” “The main thing about it isn’t the money, it’s the prestige of the award.” Vicky was ecstatic about winning for the second time, and equally as excited about having tea with the Mayor. The Grant money will go towards her violin studies in Waikato. She attributes a lot of her drive in music to her brother’s success. He began violin from an early age, and when Vicky was given the opportunity to choose an instrument, she picked it too. Her brother received the QEII award a few years ago. “When he got it, I thought the pressure was on.” Vicky has eased up on playing piano in the Waikato because she doesn’t own one. It has not stopped her from enjoying it though. “For piano, it’s so relaxing if I’m having a hard day.” If the technical work is getting a bit tough, she’ll break into a bit of pop music. Vicky has set up her own website, playing at weddings and functions. A highlight was playing violin at Dan Carter’s wedding rehearsal. She also performed at a function down in Christchurch with the Prime Minister present. At the end of the day, playing piano to her dad is what Vicky still enjoys most.

Babies will now be enrolled with their GP soon after their birth so they receive essential healthcare such as immunisations, sooner. Health Minister Tony Ryall announced the new enrolment policy last Friday. He said it makes it easier for parents to enrol their baby with their family doctor, because currently fewer than half of newborns are enrolled with a GP at 12 weeks.

About 120 people attended the Golf Club Ball at Fairhall, an inaugural event which Club member Jane Bay said was such a success it may well happen again. “It was an opportunity to show case our club house to people not involved with golf.” Janet Woolf, from Blenheim, plays the
electric piano in Janet’s Old Time Dance Band, which was hosting the evening. “It just went with a big bang.” The band also included a bass guitar, piano accordion and drums. Janet said everyone just danced the whole night, also having a go at the Gay Gordons Dance. “I wasn’t sure whether people would get up and dance, but they certainly did. Everyone just had a really good time.”

Sadly, domestic violence is one of NZ’s most serious social issues. Domestic violence is a pervasive, life-threatening crime that impacts on thousands of New Zealanders with serious physical, psychological and economic effects. Crime and injury statistics show how significant a problem domestic violence is in our country. It is one of the leading causes of injury and death to women, and also leads to short and long-term health problems such as mental illness, and problems with sexual and reproductive health. As a n i ndep endent com mu n it y organisation Women’s Refuge works at
many levels. From contact with individuals and families through to involvement with local community and government agencies, the organisation strives to help prevent and stop domestic violence. Money raised during this appeal week goes toward providing support services for women and children of Marlborough including offering Women’s Education programmes and a Wairau Children’s programme. These programmes are offered in addition to Marlborough Women’s Refuge’s core services, which aim to educate women and children in preventing family violence from re-occurring.
Stories of hope and support There have been many inspiring and real life stories shared by women throughout the years who used the support of Women’s Refuge. This a story of hope shared by one very brave woman who suffered psychological and physical abuse at the hands of her husband. “He never hit me, but he would stub out his cigarettes in the meals I spent ages cooking him. One day he wrapped the curtain cord around my neck and said; ‘I could kill you right now.’ He was a CEO. Women’s Refuge came to my aid 20 years ago. I did leave him, but he actually got help for his behaviour and we were able to be together. When we did part 10 years later it wasn’t because of violence.” Here is another story shared by a woman who is now living a life abuse free after escaping a violent, seven-year relationship.

Get out when you can, and don’t wait for things to become better – they won’t. The grass is definitely greener on the other side, so don’t worry about the barbed wire on top of the fence. Wounds heal. Use the support that Women’s Refuge offers and never look back.”

‘Pay it forward’ through volunteering Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk In the opinion of local volunteer Jac Lockington (pictured right), finding people who are skilled and passionate about volunteering is like finding gold. Jac, who is chairperson of the SF Marlborough Board of Trustees believes as the world seems to be getting busier, skilled volunteers are becoming “thin on the ground”. “They are like gold to organisations like ours. “And we are not the only organisation in need of board volunteer members,” she says. Jac and members of her board have come up with a solution to boost their numbers and benefit other local organisations as well. “We are inviting people with a range of skills to contact us to
find out more about serving on our board, and if there is anyone who might not suit our particular organisation then we can refer them to Volunteer Marlborough. “In addition, if we found someone suitable for a role such as treasurer, then we would suggest they come on board with us as well as other community organisations. “This way skilled volunteers are helping to service a range of organisations,” Jac says. Becoming a volunteer for SF Marlborough was Jac’s way of “giving back” to an organisation which helped her family through some tough times. Organised by Marcel and Helen Rood and Helen’s mother Ann Morgan, the High Tea afternoons will be held July 17, 18 and 19 in recognition of Alzheimer’s Awareness week. This year will be the restaurant’s third year holding the event. For Ann this particular fundraiser is close to her heart as she is a member of Alzheimer’s Marlborough, and has had friends and family affected by the incurable and progressive disease. “I recently have had a childhood

Threatening behaviour leads to cannabis charges Saturday, July 7th At 12.05am a 20 year old unemployed male was arrested for disorderly behaviour after an incident on Scott Street. At 12.35pm a 32 year old unemployed male was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon, namely a car jack after he allegedly threatened his father in law. Whilst police were at his Rarangi address a search pursuant to the Misuse of Drugs Act was also invoked and cannabis plants were located at the address. Ten cannabis plants were found ranging in height from 20cm - 60cm, there were also nine cannabis cuttings located. Police also located a quantity of dried cannabis plant material including 36 cannabis “tinnies” and approximately 1000 cannabis seeds. He now also faces further charges of, cultivates cannabis, possession of cannabis, possession of cannabis oil, possession of cannabis seeds and supplies cannabis.
He has been bailed to appear before the Blenheim District Court on the 16th of July 2012. At 11pm a 28 year old unemployed male was arrested on a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear. At 11pm a 15 year old male student was arrested for unlawfully in an enclosed yard after he was located in a yard in Bomford Street without a reasonable excuse. Sunday July 8th At 12.10am a 21 year old male student was arrested for disorderly behaviour after an incident on Kinross Street. At 12.40am a 17 year old male farm hand was arrested for disorderly behaviour after an incident on Main Street. At 1.15am a 17 year old male vineyard worker was arrested for breaching the liquor ban. At 2.10am a 17 year old male labourer
was arrested for breaching the liquor ban on Scott Street. At 2.20am a 21 year old male student was arrested for male assaults female and breaching his bail conditions after a domestic related incident at a Koromiko address. He was held in custody and appeared before the Blenheim District Court on Monday. At 2.55am a 20 year old unemployed female, a 17 year old unemployed female and a 19 year old unemployed female were arrested for fighting in a public place namely Scott Street. At 5am a 17 year old male student was arrested for unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle on Alabama Road. He has been bailed to appear before the Blenheim District Court on the 16th of July 2012. At 11am a 21 year old male boat man was arrested for unlawfully in a building after he was located in a Picton address without a reasonable excuse. He was held in custody and appeared before the Blenheim District Court on Monday.

Graduating as a Pilot Officer (PLTOFF) in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) yesterday was the icing on the cake for Blenheim’s Sara Potter. Sara (25) a former Marlborough Girls’ College pupil, is one of 25 Officer Cadets who have recently finished an Initial Officer Training Course (IOTC), learning the skills they need to perform as Officers in the RNZAF. The completion of the course was marked yesterday with a graduation ceremony at RNZAF Base Woodbourne. PLTOFF Potter joined the Air Force in January this year, because it was an excellent opportunity to turn her academic studies and life experience into a career where she could travel, learn more, and experience things she wouldn’t normally experience in the civilian world. “The best thing about the IOTC has been seeing the changes in myself and my course mates as we develop into Officers,” PLTOFF Potter said. “Whether it has been through our command, leadership and management training in the field, or through
communications exercises such as speeches, all of us have really grown into the roles we are about to fulfil.” Both of PLTOFF Potter’s parents have also been in the Air Force. “My mum was a telephonist in the Women’s Royal New Zealand Air Force and my dad was in the Air Force as an avionics technician. I’ve grown up knowing a lot of Air Force personnel, and I’ve certainly run across a few of them while I’ve been training.” PLTOFF Potter loves being outside in the New Zealand environment and the RNZAF has given her the skills to be out in the field. “The RNZAF provides such awesome opportunities to really experience life and push yourself further than you have before. “Every day you go to work, even if it’s training, you know that what you’re doing is part of something bigger, and it gives you a lot of satisfaction. “At the end of the day everybody is there working towards the same goal, and there’s an immense feeling of teamwork and family,” PLTOFF Potter said.

Brass band returns with titles By Robbie Parkes The Marlborough District Brass Band has returned from Timaru with range of titles, and plenty to celebrate. The band placed third in the street march, fifth in the test, and eighth overall in A grade at the 132nd National Brass Band Championship. The band’s musical director Kevin Moseley said they went really well. “We tend to do better when the test pieces are more musical and highly technical.” “The test piece this year was probably the third hardest piece to play, and all the A grade bands struggled.” Kevin said they had some tough competition, especially being in the top grade. “The bands that got in front of us were really senior bands.”
He said there was a lot of outstanding solo work from the band members, with awards to show it. Mike Ford was first in the open tenor horn and third in the invitation slow melody. He placed third in the open champion of champions competition, and Riki McDonnell was fourth. Riki also took first place in three sections - the masters, invitation slow melody and the open euphonium. Jeffrey Mulraney came third in the masters, Todd Smith came second in the junior euphonium, and Ivan Suminsky came third in the junior cornet. David Moseley was first in the amateur cornet. “For our small band, the results are still outstanding,” said Kevin. “We’ll come back next year and we’ll work hard.”

To make the meatballs, combine chopped bay leaves, cinnamon, parsley, basil and meat, eggs, bread, Romano cheese, salt and pepper to taste; stir. parsley and salt and pepper to taste in 5. The generous coverage of snow, thanks to recent cold snaps, meant a good base for skiers and boarders down the main tracks, and plenty of powder for tobogganing and snowman building, as part of Family Fun Day. Hamish Neill, Rainbow Spokesperson, said it was an outstanding weekend for weather and turnout. “Family Fun Day is there to entertain those that are up there enjoying the mountain.” “The shuttles were busy and we had nearly two carparks full. So it was a busy day that was well managed.” Hamish and his team have been busy during the school holidays, and the School Programme is always well supported during term time. “Every night that it is possible, we are
making snow, and we have a really good base to run off.” Mike Edridge, from Mike Edridge Contracting at Pelorus Bridge has been busy terrain grooming and extending the terrain park. “All in all, we just need more snow now, but for early July, this is really good,” said Hamish. Lynne Gray and her six year-old daughter Samantha from Wairau Valley were enjoying their second day on the slopes this season. “We can’t keep her off the snow,” said Lynne. “I hate having to go home,” said Samantha. Pip Herd from Blenheim said for this early in the season the snow was great. Jacob Herd, 6, did not have any complaints. “It’s really good, I like that I can ski with nick Collins with dylan, 4, tobogganing at rainbow skiflield, my friends.” as part of saturday's family fun day.

Local wins truck in boar hunt
Keen hunters and Crusaders fans Liam and Alan McVicar were excited to meet the Whitelock brothers at Sunday’s Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Local man Brian Barclay is a man of few words, so when he was handed the keys to a Toyota Hilux yesterday all he could do was grin. Brian won the major spot prize from the Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp which ran at the weekend. Although he didn’t catch a boar “big enough” for the competition, he still enjoyed taking his niece Taylor-Jane (6) out hunting for possums. “It never crossed my mind that I would win a prize, let alone a truck. I only entered the comp for some fun and for my niece who loves going hunting with me,” he smiles. The comp, in its third year, was a complete success and organisers Matt and Lisa Willis were pleased. “We run the comp as a family event as a way to share our love of hunting and importance of family time shared, so we are thrilled that Brian won,” Lisa says. Hunters came from as far as Invercargill to take part in the three day competition which concluded on Sunday with a prize giving.

Sam, George, Adam and Luke Whitelock took part in the Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp at the weekend. Fellow Crusaders Ben Funnell, Luke Romano and Joe Moody took up the challenge and joined their teammates for the event. “We’re from a farm so we grew up hunting and fishing,” said George. The brothers would go out with their dad, starting small with possums and rabbits, and eventually got into bigger game. Recently, all four have got into boar hunting, with Luke and George leading the charge. “It’s really cool, we’re all interested in it and we enjoy it,” said George. “We always get a few boars, but occasionally we get a big one,” said Adam. Being brothers, there is a bit of

rivalry out in the bush. “There’s a bit of banter that goes round but if someone gets one we’ll all come and have a look,” said Sam. In between tight training and work schedules the boys try to get a hunt in each week. They hunt more around North Canterbury, but Sam said there’s some decent game in the hills around Blenheim. George said it is hard to find the time to head north but Blenheim, being Crusader’s country, is a big incentive to make the trip. They came out of the comp with a couple of small boars, and made the most of the weekend. The Crusaders players got their hands dirty on the day, handling the boars as they came off trucks and trailers and working the weighing station. They also took part in the Power Pulling competition and posed for pictures with a few gobsmacked fans.
