Blenheim builders strike gold Great workmanship is what creates golden opportunities at building awards. This was the belief of Andrew Lawson of Andrew Lawson Builder, and Ant Clarke of Clarke Construction. Both Marlborough building companies won a gold award in the Nelson Marlborough Region Registered Master Builders Placemakers 2012 House of the Year awards, for their houses in Blenheim and Renwick respectively, for between $600,000 and $1 million. This was the first time the two regions had been conglomerated for the competition – a reflection on the current quiet building climate according to both award winners. The results were announced last Friday even-

ing in Nelson. Ant Clarke said attention to detail was a key to the gold award for the house built in Renwick, and designed by Wulf Borrmeister Architect, of Christchurch. “It’s about moving with technology, and at the end of the day it all comes down to workmanship.” Points were accumulated over different categories, and a score of above 90% had to be achieved for gold. “To get gold is very difficult, so we were pleased,” said Ant. Last year the company won both the Marlborough Master Builder House of the Year and the Renovation of the Year, and went on to

win the National title of Supreme Renovation of the Year. Ant said building is picking up again now in Marlborough. “There’s probably no better time to build than now, because once Christchurch kicks off, it will effect Marlborough as tradespeople go down there.” Andrew Lawson said the points system was like a pyramid, with only the top few entrants achieving gold, whose work is assessed on workmanship, design and functionality. “We have been around for a long time and we know what we’re doing. It’s nice to have another result - it’s fantastic to get gold.” Continued page 2

A wonderful author and a colourful kiwi icon By Annabelle Latz Margaret Mahy shared wonderful moments in the Marlborough Sounds with her good friend and fellow children’s author Joy Cowley. One of New Zealand’s favourite authors, Margaret, 76, died on Monday in Christchurch, after being diagnosed with cancer in April. Joy lived at Fish Bay in the Marlborough Sounds for 20 years, and it is still a favourite holiday spot for her family. “Margaret and I had a lot of fun together. We had various coincidences,” said Joy. They met in the early 1970’s. The year they were born and the year their first book was published, were the same. Margaret’s first book, published in 1969, was A Lion in the Meadow, and Joy’s, also 1969, was The Duck and the Gun. “And we both discovered we had got a tattoo in the same year, we both had a rose on our arm.” Joy remembered one particular visit to Margaret’s Governors Bay home during the 1980’s. “We got lost once when Margaret picked me up from Christchurch. We made up a story that someone had stolen the road. So I ended up writing a story called ‘The Road Robber,’ which was used as part of a reading programme.”

Joy said Margaret always had lots of animals. “She showed me that rabbits don’t stop growing when you keep feeding them. Her rabbits were like small dogs.” Margaret’s wonderful colour and imagination has been shared with generations New Zealanders through her short stories and New Zealand School Journal Pieces, like ‘The Wind between the Stars,’ and ‘The Little Witch.’ Margaret Mahy Joy Cowley “She always seemed to work Joy said she wrote and spoke Joy Cowley is releasing another chilat 600%, she was always there superbly, speaking as effortlessly dren’s book very soon called Dunger. for everybody.” It is set in the Marlborough Sounds. “She always dressed up when she about children’s fiction as she did about Lindy Kelly is a farmer near Nelson, went to schools, often using wigs, or a quantum physics. ‘Memory’ was a book published and has written 25 children’s books. witch’s outfit.” She said Margaret has been a huge In the 1970’s Joy and Margaret in 1987, which Joy said was about produced a television programme with Margaret’s auntie who also lived in inspiration, both for her own writing TV1, about their lives as authors, called Governors Bay, who suffered from and for many New Zealanders. Blenheim builders strike gold Continued from page 1 For the last two years Andrew has been president of Master Builders, and said he had a good feeling about the gold-winning house his company built in Blenheim by the Taylor River, which was designed by Marlborough architect Jimma Dillon.

“We love building, and it shows,” said Andrew. He said his company has still been busy, despite the last couple of years showing a trend of less building going on. Harris Builders in Nelson took out the PlaceMakers Supreme Award for the House of the

Donations flood in for Hospice ball auction Auction items for the Hospice Marlborough fundraising ball this weekend are coming in thick and fast. And along the way, people are learning that being old or sick is not a requirement to be involved in the organisation. Debby Jensen, from Hair by Kardos, said this has been the biggest challenge for herself and workmate Donna Tupoutoa. “We are just organising the ball because we want to do it, and some people are confused by this.” But the event planned for this Saturday July 28, at The Winery in Riverlands, is proving very popular. There have been 170 tickets sold so far, with 215 available in total. “It would be neat if we could sell out,” said Debby. She said the generosity people have shown along the way has been the highlight of organising the ball. “Offers of auction items have just

come out of the blue, and that’s the nicest thing.” Almost all items have been donated, including all the food. “We never ever thought we would have got what we got.” Footloose Blenheim has also made a very generous donation, 48 pairs of beautiful women’s slippers worth over $1900. “The level of care provided by Hospice was extraordinary when I had a close family member ill, so it is a pleasure to make this donation,” Footloose owner Jos Smith said. Hospice fundraising and promotions officer Natalie Lawler was thrilled with the slippers and said they would be gratefully received by patients. “What an amazing and lovely idea to donate slippers. They are beautiful and will make our patients feel really special.” Tickets for the ball are $85 each.

He will read the first two or three chapters with them, leading them into the story. “I try to make it exciting from the first page.” His other three books, ‘Silence of Fear,’ ‘Playing for Keeps,’ and ‘Face,’ are set in the Marlborough Sounds, and read widely by high school students. “I would say I’m an author. But I’m retired, (from being a teacher) so I like to play a little golf, take the dog for a walk, and I like to write every day.”

It is set in the Coromandel, a change from his previous three novels which have been set in Marlborough. Denis said he was careful to write a book that high school students could easily pick up and become absorbed in. “Literacy was the most important skill people will ever learn. More funds needed to help Sustain our Sounds Sustain our Sounds chairman Danny Boulton (right) has a request for the people of Marlborough to help the group save the Marlborough Sounds from a giant salmon farm. With the Environmental Legal Assistant Fund reaching its capping for funding, Sustain our Sounds is calling for further support to cover costs for expert witnesses. Sustain our Sounds Inc chair Danny Boulton said this has occurred through the added process of facilitation and discussion of offshore experts. “There are ongoing costs that can’t be foreseen. This is a rollercoaster ride where you can’t hold back until all funds are available otherwise you miss the boat,” he said. “To date we have supported our case with raised funds and extensive amounts of pro bono work. We have called offshore experts on a diverse range of subjects. We have one of the best Environmental modeling experts on Salmon farming in the world, some experts have contributed their time for free or for a reduced rate, and

others have to be paid in full and they don’t come cheap.” Danny urged people who were serious about retaining the Sounds they cherish, to realise the applications will have a very detrimental effect on all those things they value. “We have one of the rarest seabirds in the world, the king shag. Its habitat is at risk and there are just over 600 of these birds. King Salmon continue to modify predator nets yet marine mammals, dolphins and seals, keep dying. We can learn from overseas experience. Salmon farms are a menace for biodiversity, commercial and recreational fishing and tourism. They leave behind a seabed devoid of life and as we have seen a biosecurity threat’. Danny said Sustain our Sounds has a

very strong case but it can only be fought once. The group has projected a $20,000 top up is needed to optimise opportunities. “Every little helps. For those who have made contributions, thank you.” For those who would like to contribute, please visit the website www.sustainoursounds.org. “We are fighting a budget in excess of $6m from a majority offshore owned billion dollar family and the government has contributed $500,000 for the promotion of King Salmon product, not what you would call a fair playing field,” said Danny. The Family Court has already received about 600 divorce applications this year. Issues such as job losses, increased work hours, and financial concerns were mentioned in the applications.

Sales star wins trip to Hawaii By Robbie Parkes After making waves in the Telecom sales department, Blenheim woman Aysha Bradley will hit the surf on an all expenses paid trip to Hawaii. The retail sales consultant for the communication giant’s Blenheim branch won the trip for two after her sales record earned her the title of Top Hybrid Sales Person in New Zealand. She was invited to the awards dinner in Auckland last Wednesday, not knowing she had won until her name was read out at the ceremony. “I was quite surprised and honored,” she said. “I’ve won televisions and phones through selling at work, but nothing this big before.” Sales made throughout the financial year (July 2011 to June 2012) were recorded and added to a tally for each salesperson across the country. Aysha attributes the win to her drive and the customer experience she provides. Along with a lucky friend from Wellington and a number of other award winners, Aysha will spend one week in the islands from September 18.

Sun readers have their say... Q: Do you understand the proposed asset sales and what are your views on them?

Paul Fletcher Blenheim

Josh McKay Blenheim

Louise Whitmarsh-Everiss Blenheim

Ian Brokenshire Blenheim

Yes, but my view is to keep what is owned by New Zealand in New Zealand by New Zealander’s.

I have a good understanding of them and I can see where John Keys is coming from but at the same time I don’t agree because it’s our assets and we should keep them Kiwi.

Yes I do understand, but I don’t agree with selling assets off, because once we lose them they’ll be hard to get back. It’s a short term gain and a long term loss if we do sell them.

Yes I understand them and I feel we need to get New Zealand working economically again. We need money so it’s essential to sell some of our assets to keep the country afloat.

I understand them. I don’t like to sell family silver, but if you haven’t got socks you can’t pull them up. So if you can’t pay debts you need to look at selling assets. It comes down to a valued judgment of what you can afford to do.

Free speech? Dear Ed, In reply to Chris Fortune’s offer to fund a oneway trip out of New Zealand to a certain critic, does this mean he will also do the same for all of Her Majesty’s Opposition in Parliament? The only difference I can see between the two is that the Opposition gets paid for its criticism (and by the taxpayer, what’s more!). Has Mr. Fortune not heard of the phrase “free speech”? Dear Ed, What a great short story on Ken Lawrence (right), (Weds 18th Sun Newspaper). I started work as an apprentice mechanic at River Park Motors Nov 1964, Ken was a Senior Mechanic there at the time and I can remember he was trying to get a motor up and running that ran on Hydrogen or water, thats 47 years ago, so he has been trying hard to get something working for a long time. Ken and his brother Stan were mad keen speed boat racers, speed boats were a big part of Marlborough at that time,

Tru Jen etc. The Lawrence family lived down the road from us in South Street, as a young 7 or 8 years old I can remember Stan taking me for a spin around Waikawa bay in his stepped Hydroplane, I think it was called Thunder Bolt, not sure, it was a long time ago. As a youngster we always looked forward to speed boat racing near the old Ferry Bridge on the Wairau River on a Sunday, great times, great memories. Kerry Jacques Tugun Australia

One Way Ticket Dear Ed, In response to Chris Fortunes challenge to Chris Davies (Sun July 18th) regarding the rather obvious shortcomings of our regional RTO, I put this challenge to him. Declare that the croissants served at your stall, Chris, at the Farmers Market are not the very same as those produced and sold the previous day at New World, that you looked very “sheepish” wheeling out a trolley load a few weeks ago on a

Saturday afternoon, that you profess to serve local produce, deny other stall holders the right to serve hot foods as it competes with your kitchen, that this does not contravene the Farmers Markets code of ethics and that you are also the National President. A little honesty and humility goes a long way to instilling trust for your unwary customers upon whom you serve dishonest goods! Disillusioned

Karting to the top

Two brothers, Tayler and Cooper Forbes are aiming high, as Celeste Lodewyk finds out. Many of New Zealand’s racing greats, including the likes of Jason Richards and Scott Dixon share one commonality. They all began their motorsport careers as youngsters behind the wheel of a go-kart. To achieve what these driver have is part of a lifelong goal shared by two brothers, Tayler and Cooper Forbes who are karting their way to the top. Tayler (16) and Cooper (9) have been members of the Marlborough Kart Club for around four years and both admit it has been a great sport that has “kept them out of hospital and trouble”. “I wanted to get into racing motorbikes but Dad thought I would break too many bones. “So he gave me the choice, broken bones or karting,” Tayler laughs. Wa t c h i n g h i s brother from the sidelines Cooper

initially wasn’t interested in following in his footsteps, but after his first lap around the track he was hooked. “I was busy running around being a pain so Dad suggested I give it a go,” Cooper jokes. “When I finally did I ended up crashing through a fence and getting chucked out, but I loved it and got straight back in and kept on racing,” he grins. When Tayler began karting he struggled at first with his weight and size as he was significantly bigger than most other kids in the Club. Now he has settled into the Rotax Heavy class racing others his own size and is starting to achieve some podium results here and on other tracks throughout the South Island. Tayler also had the opportunity recently to represent the South Island at the KartSport NZ National Schools

Championship held at the beginning of this month. “I didn’t do as well as I had hoped as I had to race in a lighter class, but I did ok with my times and finished 12th. “It was good practice for nationals next year and an opportunity to get to know the track,” he says. For Cooper the podium finishes have also come into close view as he begins to dominate in his Cadet (6-12-years) class. Cooper has won a number of local events including Club Champs and the Marlborough Enduro, and has achieved some fourth placings outside of the region. Another event where Tayler and Cooper raced well in was the Top of the South Sun Belts 2012 challenge, where they both won second place in their classes. “Bot h boys are starting to come on form a nd get up amongst

the front runners,” says proud father Shaun. For parents Shaun and Trudy Forbes motorsport has played a major role within their own families, and is now providing some exciting opportunities for Tayler and Cooper. Trudy’s brother Gary Orton operates a Toyota Racing Series team in Nelson with business partner Guy Griffith called Victory Motor Racing. One of his drivers Damon Leitch who was in last year’s team took on Tayler as a pit crew member. “It was great learning from those guys as it’s the direction I want to go in,” Tayler says. For Cooper, it was meeting the late Jason Richards which spurred him to pursue his passion for motorsport. “Jason spent some time with me and told me

to live my dream, it’s something I’ll always remember,” he says. Shaun’s experience in karting has also provided invaluable, from competing all over the South Island to holding the Marlborough Club Championship for three years running. “I began karting in 1987 and have always believed it is one of the best ways to prepare yourself for driving on the open road. “You talk to any professional driver and they will say they have been in a kart at least once. “It’s one of the safest motorsports around with rare incidences of injuries and now that Tayler is driving to Nelson every weekend to attend college, Trudy and I have full confidence in his driving ability and we don’t have to worry about him,” Shaun says. Bupa Technology allows more freedom Bupa Personal Medical Alarms have a variety of new technology aimed at helping older people with dementia or other medical conditions stay in their homes for longer. As new medical alarm technologies continue to grow in popularity and peoples’ desire to stay at home longer increases, health and care company Bupa has invested in sourcing compatible technology to make staying at home easier. This range of sensors, help detect both activity and inactivity, when the person is moving about or not moving. These sensors either link to a personal pager used by the carer (in the same house), or link to the Bupa monitoring centre, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is the first time this technology has been linked in this way in New Zealand. This allows the person whose activity needs to be continually monitored more freedom in the home. Their carer can be more relaxed, secure in the knowledge that they will be alerted immediately, if needed. There are three products available for supporting carers and people living with dementia or other

medical conditions. A pressure mat sensor which can be placed in a range of locations and will trigger a pager or send a call to the monitoring centre when the person with dementia crosses the path of the mat, indicating that they are on the move. The bed occupancy sensor works in a similar way and is activated when the person with dementia gets out of bed which in turn alerts the pager of the person in the home caring for them. This sensor can be set at various levels depending on the normal movement of the person ie. It can be set to trigger after the person has been absent from the bed after a set amount of time. This sensor can also be used for inactivity ie. If the person does not get out of bed at the pre determined time an alert will also be sent. The third product is the property exit sensor that is triggered by the door opening. Generally used on a front or back external door, to indicate that the person is leaving the house. Senior Living Retirement planning in your thirties

The years following your 30th birthday are full of changes. While high school seems like a long time ago, retirement feels even further away. But planning for your retirement is an important goal, and if you have not done anything about it up until now, your 30’s are the perfect time to set a plan. If you have any unnecessary debt (high-interest credit card or hire purchase debt), the first step in your retirement plan should be to pay that off as quickly as you can. Where will your money come from? Many retired New Zealanders get their income from two main sources – NZ Super, and their own

enjoy your retirement

The ‘Sandwich Generation’ Are you part of the ‘Sandwich Generation”? An increasing number of people in their 50’s and 60’s are finding themselves caught in the middle of financing the costs of aging parents and paying for children’s college fees, all while they are funding their own retirement. This is the Sandwich generation! Until recent years the need to at least partially support both aging parents and adult children simply didn’t exist, but today it is caused in part because lifespans are much longer than in years past. How to avoid Sandwich Generation problems: - Preserve your assets. Encourage your children to finance all, or part of their own tertiary education, and use your parents own assets to finance their care for as long as possible. - Plan ahead. Keep the sandwich generation trend in mind when you’re projecting what kind of income you’ll need in retirement. Be sure to consider the possibility that one or more of your children may need to come back home for awhile, raising your monthly costs or maybe delaying your plan to move to a smaller home. - Assess the situation before sandwich

savings. However it is estimated that around 40% of New Zealanders over the age of 65 rely on NZ Super alone. Most likely, there will be a gap between the income NZ Super provides, and the income you want in retirement. So you will need to have other sources of your own such as: Income and lump sums from retirement savings schemes like KiwiSaver, other pensions and workplace savings, investments, and cash deposits. Other sources of income could include investment income from the sale or rental of property, the sale of a business or an inheritance.

generation problems arise. As early as possible, talk with your parents about their assets, how they want to live as they age, what kind of health care and lifesaving measures they do or don’t want, and who should make legal and medical decisions for them if they are no longer able to handle their own affairs. This may be a difficult and uncomfortable conversation for you and your parents, but answering these questions while there is still time to plan ahead can help you both avoid a lot of issues later on. - Put yourself first. Because you’re both a conscientious parent and a dutiful child, you may be tempted to put your own needs after those of your aging parents and adult children if you find yourself in a sandwich generation scenario. Don’t! The only person who can save for your retirement is you. To avoid many sandwich generation problems--and help your parents and your children--you first have to keep your own financial house in order. Finally, don’t forget that being part of the sandwich generation and caring for others can be hard on your physical and emotional health as well as your financial well-being.

Did you know that falling down is one of the leading causes of injury in people aged 65 and over? Falling down is not just the result of getting older. Falling can be caused by a variety of circumstances of which many can be prevented. Here are four simple steps you can take to significantly reduce your risk of injury by falling down. Improve your body balance with exercise: If you don’t have a regular exercise programme, start one! Lack of exercise leads to weakness, which in turn increases your chances of falling. Try exercises such as Yoga and Tai Chi for balance and co-ordination. If you are 50-years and over and haven’t exercised regularly, check with your health care provider for advice on the best type of exercise programme for you. Increase your home’s accessibility and safety: A majority of falls happen at home so to increase accessibility and make your home safer, here are some tips. • Remove items you might trip over • Remove small throw rugs or use double sided tape to keep the rugs from slipping • Keep items you use often within easy reach. Avoid using ladders or step stools • Have safety handles installed next to your toilet, in your tub or shower • Use non-slip mats in the bath tub or shower • Improve the lighting in your home. Use lamp shades or frosted bulbs to reduce glare • Install handrails and extra lighting in stairways • Wear shoes that give good support and have thin non-slip soles

Reduce the risk of falling with our simple steps. Watch out for medication side effects: Age can affect the way some medications work in your body. Look out for drugs, or combinations of drugs that have side effects including drowsiness or disorientation. This is especially important with over-the-counter cold and flu medications, which can often increase drowsiness. Be sure to check with your health care provider before trying new medication, especially if you are already taking prescription drugs. And ask your pharmacist for a complete list of side effects you might expect when taking them. Have your vision checked regularly: Vision problems can increase your chances of falling. You may be wearing the wrong glasses, or have a condition such as glaucoma or cataracts that causes vision problems or limits your vision. To reduce your risk of falling, have your vision checked by an eye specialist every year for early detection and correction of vision problems.

Is Your TV Ready for the Digital Switchover? The New Zealand Government has announced that New Zealand TV is going digital, which means the current free-to-air analogue transmission will be replaced by a free-to-air digital only transmission. This digital switchover will take place in stages, from September 2012.

If you want to continue watching free-to-air television when your region completes the switch from analogue to digital, your TV will need to go digital. You do not need to replace your existing TV with a new TV, almost any TV can go digital with Freeview.

Reserve used as shortcut By Robbie Parkes Joan Squire’s daily walk around the block has been ruined by the needless damage done to one of her favourite parks in Blenheim. Deep tyre tracks run through Eric Young Reserve, a small area connecting Robalan Pl and Westhaven Pl. There is no road connecting the two streets directly, but someone has obviously used the park as a shortcut, said Joan. “They made a real mess, they’ve gone right through the whole area.” This is the second time in two weeks the reserve has been muddied by cars going through, according to Joan. She noticed damage the week

before on Wednesday morning and saw even more damage last Thursday. She thinks those taking the shortcut must be of a younger disposition going for a drive and being “a bit silly.” “It’s a lovely little reserve and it’s a shame it’s being ruined by someone with no intelligence.” Joan contacted the Marlborough District Council last week, but admittedly, she did not think there was much they could do. The houses around there must hear it all happen because they’re so close, she said. “I think they should ring the police when they see or hear them.”

Tobacco: behind closed doors Story and photo by Annabelle Latz New Zealand has taken another step towards being a smokefree nation. As of Monday this week, stockists of tobacco cannot make reference to it, and the product must stay hidden behind view, behind cabinet doors. Grant Stubbs of Caltex in Blenheim is happy to support the new law, but said it will take a few years before people stop smoking cigarettes because they cannot see them. “I don’t think it will make any difference for a while.” These new rules are to keep in line with the Smokefree Environments Amendment Bill, passed in July 2011. Fines for selling tobacco products to under-18’s has also been raised, with the maximum penalty now $10,000 for the business, compared to the old fine of $2000. An instant fine of up to $1000 for underage sales will also be imposed. He said people who smoke now know what they want, so nothing will change. “The whole idea is that it will stop younger people from starting.” He said during busy times it might get annoying

having to poke around behind cupboard doors to get cigarettes for buyers, but overall it was “no drama” for him. Grant said his customers haven’t really said too much either. “The questions have been more from curiosity really.” Andrew Lawson from Andrew Lawson Builder Ltd has had two of his builders on the roads around Marlborough, Nelson and the West Coast, fitting these cabinet doors at tobacco outlets. The Blenheim-based company was contracted to fit the doors to all Imperial Tobacco display cabinets in dairies, supermarkets and petrol stations. “It was nearly a week’s work,” said Andrew. He said the project was fairly straightforward, as the doors were built in the North Island then delivered to Blenheim. “It took about 15 or 20 minutes for each job,” said Andrew. Being a non-smoker himself, Andrew supported any law that would deter people from the habit.

Julie, along with partner Billy Hebberd has owned Bounce With Us for the past five years, supplying bouncy castles for a wide range of events throughout Marlborough. “You can imagine how fun it is owning a business like this. There’s nothing better than seeing how happy our castles make people and hearing the positive feedback,” she smiles. Bounce With Us currently has eight bouncy castles for hire to suit a range of ages, from toddlers through to teenagers. One exciting development soon to happen will be the arrival of four new castles, of which one is designed for adults. “We are really excited about these.” All castles can be delivered anywhere in Marlborough, indoors or outdoors as long as there is access to electricity. “Our castles are definitely available during the week as well, not just weekends,” Julie says. Fast heels for duathlon The third round of the BikeFit Marlborough Winter Duathlon Series took place on Sunday at the Wither Hills Farm circuit. For the long race over a 5km run, 20 km bike and 5 km run, competitors were randomly drawn in teams of two with each person doing the full course, and the average speed was used to determine final placings. As expected Jeremy McKenzie ran away from the field, completing the first 5 km in 16.25 mins, to take a lead over Dave Grono and Robbie Barnes. McKenzie continued to shine and by the end of the cycle leg had increased his lead over Grono to 5 minutes, and comfortably took line honours in a personal time of 1.07.10. The race for line honours for the Women was a much tighter affair and a good battle developed between the experienced Rachel

Monk, the winner of many local races in the past, and the up and coming Jess Barnes. Barnes had lead Monk into the first transition by a matter of seconds, and by the end of the cycle leg, held a 19 second advantage, improved on this on the last run, to take the honours in a time of 1.23.25 - 22 seconds ahead of Monk. The medium duathlon was a 2.5km run, 16 km ride and 2.5 km run. Anton Horton showed the field a clean pair of heels to finish in a time of 58.51 to record his second win. Mel Jones was the first Woman home in 1.04.18. The short course, 2.5 km run followed by an 8km bike and ending with a 1 km run, had Toby McKendry crossing the line first, in time of 43.18. The next event is scheduled for 12 August with course details to be advised.

Every club has a scorebook so figures and records from any game played are easily available, but these stories are not. David hasn’t reached the stage where he is rifiling

New fence means more fundraising

Stories come out of the woodwork By Robbie Parkes Classic sporting memories and anecdotes will hopefully come out of the woodwork in time for Picton Cricket Club’s 150 year celebrations in September. Member David Baird was asked to compile something “vaguely representative of a reunion document” to mark the occasion, and he is asking anyone with a story to come forward. The main focus is on the people, their stories, and any old pieces of history that might come with it. David said cricketers tend to put their memorabilia straight into storage, but they always

Wednesday July 25, 2012

For the past five years Eastern States Speedway vice president John Blokker (right) has been involved in the planning of upgrading and replacing the track’s safety fence. The time has arrived to have it done before the race season starts up again in September, and so far all work carried out has been a true community effort. The changes being made are all in line with Speedway New Zealand regulations. Not only are the new regulations being implemented including added height, but the whole fence has been designed with “future proofing” in mind. “We looked at the speed of the track and added in extra safety measures to ensure the track’s fence will stand the test of time for future race generations,” John says. The previous fence has been completely taken down and main posts have been put in over the weekend by club members and volunteers. So far money raised through grants and

through old museum documents, and hopes it won’t come to that. The Club will celebrate their milestone from September 28-30. A number of events will be held in Picton over the couple of days to mark the special occasion. Anyone with memories or anecdotes from playing cricket with the Club can fill out a registration form available from the Picton Cricket Club, by calling secretary Coral Beaton on 03 573 6580 or emailing coral.beaton@ xtra.co.nz.

donations have financed many of the materials, but there still is some fundraising needing to be done. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to show their support by purchasing the naming rights to a post, and in return will have their name on it for as long as the post stands. To sponsor a post costs only $150, or $150+ gst for businesses. Carrying on the giving spirit By Robbie Parkes Bread of Life Trust manager Brian Gull says his new role helping the community is rewarding. “It’s not a job at all, it’s just wonderful to be here, and to be involved in the team.” Bread of Life Trust is a Christian Charitable organisation that works within the Marlborough region. “For me it’s an answer to prayer and it’s something I’ve been seeking for some time, it ticks all the boxes.” Originally from Zimbabwe, but having lived in South Africa for some years, Brian moved to New Zealand with his family in 2007. “I think I just wanted a new season in life and we felt as a family we needed a new challenge.” He was involved in similar

projects in Africa and helped initiate one incentive that fed 30,000 people a day. Brian replaces long-serving manager Val Seatter, who he said, has really set the standard. “Val has built a very, very strong foundation and I can only hope to fill those shoes and build on that.” “She has done a superb job in the community.” Brian’s goal as manager is to help serve the public in the best possible way, and bring some of the group’s ideas into fruition. “I would like to see steady growth. Most of the people here have got a vision and we want to build into that.” “Our aim is to uplift lives.” It runs a range of services for the Marlborough public, including OSCAR, afterschool and holiday programmes for children.

Two lanes considered for Market St Marlborough District Council are considering making a section of Market St two-way. The area of Market St between High St and Wynen St, may be changed as part of a number of roading projects being contemplated by Council. Among the other projects is the installation of three roundabouts in Middle Renwick Rd, the planting of trees along Grove Rd, and making the intersections at Jacksons and

Old Renwick roads, and Bells Rd and State Highway 6 safer. Currently, $70,000 is already allocated for making alterations to Market St, but a loan of $2.46 million may be needed for the previous three projects as they do not qualify for Government funding. A mini park at the corner of Queen and Charles Streets has also been allocated funding amounting to $540,000.
