By Chris Tobin Signs of increased levels of debt are being shown by Blenheim people according to the Marlborough Family Budgeting Service and power bills remain a big issue.

“Cases are now more complex than before with the debts people are getting into,” said the budgeting services coordinator in Blenheim, Fiona Patrick.

“Previously people had a couple of debts; now there’s quite a few and

people are looking at insolvency.

“It’s a shame people get to that stage because if they had seen us earlier we could have done something.”

Nationally the number of people requiring the help of budgeting services has increased dramatically and this has occurred in Marlborough also.

“This year we saw over 300 client cases that reflects the dire state in which some families in Marlborough are finding themselves,” Fiona said.

“It’s because of the recession and redundances. If people don’t have savings when they have a problem, there’s nothing for them to fall back on.

“A lot of people are living pay to pay.”

She said power was a big issue in Blenheim and the power companies had begun checking the credit ratings of clients.

“The days of hopping from one power company to another are

behind us. We’re finding people in the situation where they can’t actually get the power on. They have to get a guarantor or a family member or they are moving somewhere else where someone has the power on.

“It’s only the start of this issue and it will get worse.

“We don’t have prepaid meters here in Blenheim and it’s an issue people need to be aware of. They have to keep their power up to date.”

“We’re getting more older people than we used to see,” she said.

By Robbie Parkes Classic cars to modern motoring marvels will be on display for the Club Holden Marlborough All Makes Car and Bike Show fundraiser next weekend.

Taking place every two years, the event is only in its second year, but proved a popular attraction at its debut in 2010.

“We only expected to get about 20 cars, but we got around 60, and for just a little club, that’s quite good,” said organiser Leeanne Chandler.

“It’s not so much the vintage cars, we had such a big range of all sorts last time.”

The event raised money for the new St John’s Ambulance building in Picton, as well as Picton School the first time

around.

This year the money will got towards Picton School as well as Coastguard Marlborough.

“We just thought we would do it for the coastguard because they’re local and an important group in town.”

Leeanne said Picton School handles the food side of things on the day, such as a sausage sizzle, and there will also be a coffee cart at the event.

By Chris Tobin A proposed $1 million expansion of the Picton Museum at London Quay will have tourism benefits not just for Picton but for all of Marlborough.

This is the view of Picton Historical Society president Mike Taylor.

The society has applied for land use resource consent to build a two storey 18 metres long and 12m wide extension

to its existing museum on the Picton foreshore which will be heard before an independent commissioner at the Marlborough District Council today.

“It’s big for tourism,” Mr Taylor said.

Mr Brehaut said the project grew out of donations made to the society. Ron Perano, of Blenheim, donated a replica of an 1890 Swiftsure whaleboat he built which was taken to London in June this year where it was crewed by students from Marlborough Boys’ College in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Boat Pageant.

The other donation came from Jon Perano, also from Blenheim, of a 1960 whale chaser Cachalott III. Other whaling artefacts, presently in private hands, are also expected to be donated.

Mr Brehaut said if consent was granted, fundraising would begin in earnest with construction possibly starting in the third quarter of next year.

Tourists flood in for day

By Chris Tobin Buses were busy ferrying 100s of tourists from the cruiseship Radiance of the Seas in Shakespeare Bay to Picton yesterday morning as the summer cruiseship season started.

More than 2000 tourists wandered the town’s streets or took the opportunity to embark on short trips further afield to wineries and to Blenheim.

Tracy Johnston, general manager of Destination Marlborough, said 700 of the tourists had already pre-booked excursions for the day while the others took the option of travelling into Picton on buses.

Some of the 900 crew members were also visiting the area’s attractions and Ms Johnston said the captain of the vessel toured the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.

“This is a great opportunity for Marlborough,” she said.

The buses ferried the tourists to the Picton Museum where they were greeted by the Picton Meet and Greet Volunteers who handed out pamphlets and directed them to the shopping area or to the nearby i-Site office.

“We’re quite excited to come here since we haven’t been here before,” Margaret Clark of Sydney said.

Mrs Clark and her husband Bill boarded the Radiance of the Seas in Hawaii on September 24 and this was the last leg of the trip.

“We love Marlborough wine,” Mr Clarke said.

The tourists were of all ages and mainly from Australia or the United States.

Clara’s got talent Marlborough’s budding young singer-songwriter Clara van Wel has impressed the judges on New Zealand’s Got Talent.

On Sunday night the 14 year-old Marlborough Girls’ College pupil made it to the next round of the television show.

Clara sang her own composition and played the guitar.

The judges then had to cut down the final contestants from 240 acts to 30.

A third education partnership deal has been signed between the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and a leading university in China, the Hubei Polytechnic University in Huangshi.

The partnership deal adds to NMIT’s existing partnership arrangements with the Hunan University of Technology and Zhejiang Water Conservancy and Hydropower College.

The latest partnership was yet to be signed off by the local education authority, but it was hoped it would be up and running by the start of the 2013 academic year.

King disputes police allegations that he rendered Mr Heagney semi-conscious in a headlock during an incident when Mr Heagney was removed from Shapeshifters Bar, dropped on his head and later died.

There were discrepancies in witness accounts of the incident.

As the bar manager, King was permitted by law to use reasonable force to remove Mr Heagney from the premises.

The Crown’s submission was that King used excessive force, wholly out of proportion to the demands of the situation.

Outlining the defence case, counsel Bryony Millar said King’s actions were reasonable.

The defence case was that Mr Heagney was struggling the whole time and it took three people to get him out of the bar.

King retrial begins in Wellington The retrial of former Blenheim bar manager Kevin King for the manslaughter of Matthew Heagney started in the High Court at Wellington on Monday and is expected to continue for 10 days.

King, 52, is being retried for the manslaughter of Mr Heagney, 24, early on August 23, 2009, at a bar in Blenheim.

He denied the charge before Justice Stephen Kos and a jury.

By Chris Tobin Work on building a new frost machine at Hardcase Vineyard in Casey’s Road, Seddon, had to be stopped after a neighbour complained that it was too close to her property eventhough it had been given Marlborough District Council approval.

“It has since been ascertained that the frost machine had been placed too close to the neighbour’s house and that is being rectified,” a Marlborourgh District Council spokesperson said.

The council’s compliance manager Garth Congdon was not available for comment.

The neighbour Vanessa Schonberger said she was unaware that a frost machine was being built on the property until she saw work starting on a concrete pad at the site.

Then she checked the council website to view the land use resource application made in July by Hardcase Vineyard for the 13.7 metre high frost machine including one other.

To her surprise the council had granted non-notified consent on September 13.

In the documentation backgrounding its decision, the council stated: “The nearest of the houses is approximately 290 metres from the closest proposed frost fan’s location.”

Elsewhere the council report stated: “The nearest residential boundary is approximately 270 metres from fan 1.”

However Ms Schonberger said the law required a frost machine to be 300 metres from the nearest dwelling and this was not the case as far as her property was concerned.

She pointed this out to the Marborough District Council after council approved the application stating as it did that the wind fan would not have any significant adverse effects on the environment.

Also, after she complained to council, Ms Schonberger said surveyors returned to Hardcase Vineyard and the concrete pad was relocated further away.

“How did it slip through by non notification where the application clearly stated persons were affected and it didn’t matter?” she asked.

The council spokesperson said the land use resource consent application was not notified as the activity was a controlled activity in that zone.

“That means it must be approved if it complies with the rules for that activity in that zone which the application did.”

Frost fans are a permitted activity pursuant to the Wairau/Awatere Resource Management Plan.

Record numbers for geese shoot

By Robbie Parkes A record number of shooters are heading to Molesworth Station for the Canadian Geese spring shoot this weekend.

“There’s over 300 going, and that’s the biggest one at the Molesoworth since they’ve been running shoots up there in 23 years,” said New Zealand Game Bird Hunters Association (NZGBHA) chairman Tom Lanauze.

“It’s massive for us, it shows local hunters are really supportive and we can help farmers in response to Canda Geese.”

Early in 2011, the Government moved Canadian Geese to schedule 5 of the Wildlife Act, and Fish and Game had no further involvement in the management of the bird as they were not officially a game bird anymore.

The NZGBHA was formed so as to keep the hunting of the birds from becoming a free-for-all.

Tom said the numbers of shooters heading up just shows hunters are proactive, and it is gaining a lot of interest.

Canterbury University Hunting Society (Huntsoc) have joined with the NZGBHA and plan to send members on each shoot, with a full team heading up to Molesworth this weekend.

NZGBHA committee member Russell West, also going on the shoot, said the record number of shooters is a good sign.

Now that the bird has come off the game bird list, a few hunters stopped, but a new influx have come in, he said.

“With them stepping back, it’s sort of opened up the debate and discussions, but perked up interest.

“I know of at least three pig hunters coming up for their first shoot.”

Some people think geese shooting involves a lot of waiting by ponds for things to happen, he said.

“That’s not what’s on offer in the Molesworth, you could be walking for hours.”

The spring shoot also bags the biggest numbers.

“What happens at this time of year, the adult birds start pairing up for mating.

They’ve had their goslings from last year, they’ve gone through the malt and followed the folks back home.”

The adult birds then leave their young to fend for themselves.

“Those young birds have only had one year’s tutelage, and they’re more susceptible to doing stupid things.”

A spring shoot could bring somewhere between 900 and 1200 birds overall, said Russell, and he has heard of single blocks bringing in 190 in one shoot.

Traditionally the shoot has taken place on Labour weekend, but this year the shooters are going up this weekend so as to include the school holidays.

Coast Guard responds Dear Ed, It is with regret that I find it necessary to write to you because of the accusations, made by Mr Peter Beech in regard to Coastguard Marlborough Inc, not supporting his flotilla on September 30 last.

Coastguard Marlborough Inc is a charitable trust, made up of a very dedicated and selfless group of volunteers, who all freely give their time in support of the Coastguard’s motto of Saving Lives At Sea. Being a charitable trust means that the Coastguard can not take sides in politically motivated issues.

It is their role to assist all those who work and play on the water.

I did attempt to explain this to Mr Beech prior to the flotilla, but that obviously fell on deaf ears.

Mr Beech is completely wrong and misleading when he states that New Zealand King Salmon Limited has some hold over organisations such as

Afternoon delight Dear Sir, The social/dance held Friday 5th October to bring together residents of rest homes was enjoyed by a large crowd.

Great music, decorations and friendship.

A wheel chair dance a highlight.

Sadly the afternoon tea, a big disappointment.

Half cold savouries, four on a plate on a table with eight people.

No fresh cakes and nondescript sandwiches piled together on one plate, hardly exciting for those who recall the afternoon delicacies of their youth.

A world of canvas and pegs

The Department of Conservation celebrates its centenary this weekend, and Colin Davis chats with Annabelle Latz about his time as campground operator at Pelorus Bridge in the early days.

Pelorus Bridge has always captured the heart and eyes of Colin Davis.

He knew, when the opportunity arose, he was the man to revive the campground there in 1977.

He and his wife Lorraine, and their two young children packed up from Picton, and called Pelorus Sound home until 1982.

“We were a very outdoor family anyway, and it was the most wonderful place to raise a family,” he said.

Pelorus Scenic Reserve Board, (PSRB), with characters like Charlie Saunders and Basil Hundleby, were involved in these early days.

On arrival there was no power, the Davis family set up their business in a double garage, one metre off the ground, at the end of the house.

“My job was to maintain the tracks, and Lorraine ran the café.”

The café was soon revamped and up to full speed, catering for the day trippers and the weekly 300 campers.

A fire six years earlier had destroyed the original café.

People used to camp along the side of the road when they came to Pelorus.

“That was quite popular. The road was a lot slower and much narrower.”

“The significance for us was the generations of campers who had gone there.”

Pleasures were simple and wonderful.

“On weekend mornings I’d go around the campground with fresh milk, hot bread, and the paper.”

Bread used to come from the bakery at Rai Valley.

Managing the Old Man’s Beard, or the Clematis Vitabla, was a big job.

“The Outward Bound students would camp up the road and spend lots of time unveiling the trees of the Old Man’s Beard - the weight of it would tip the trees over.”

“Over the years farmers and people in the community have spent thousands of man power

hours on the tracks and the reserve.”

The summer of 1978 was a hot one.

“In one week we went through two 44-gallon drums of ice cream. It was huge!”

During the summer months, campers had their daily ritual, including a morning pilgrimage to the river for a swim and a play in the waterfalls.

The reserve and nature tracks were afternoon choices, and the glow worms were a feature of the night.

“People just enjoyed the birds, the bush and the river, and for a few people this hasn’t changed.”

Possums and wasps were a problem, and each winter dormant wasps’ nests were destroyed.

“The largest one was under the bridge. You could have put a small car in it, it was huge!”

Floods, fires, and regular power cuts threw constant challenges their way.

“For communication, we were on a party line with seven other people, and we all had individual codes. At weekends the phone would go off at 10.30pm om a Froday and come on again at 6am on a Monday. That was it.”

Organisation was essential.

‘Carless days’, meant one day each week when they would opt not to drive, to save energy.

Petrol was unavailable during the weekends, which used to catch people out coming off the ferry from Wellington.

“A man was in the back yard one night, he said he needed some petrol because he was the AA man! So I got out of bed and gave him some.”

Impromptu magic shows, organ playing in the bush, a visiting New Zealand band Blerta, a motorcar rally passing through, and the Wizard’s visits from Christchurch with his upside down globe, all formed great memories.

Colin remembered one evening when a row between a couple broke out in the campground.

“This caravan door slammed, and they just drove off with their poles and awning still attached. They got to the road and it ripped off,

and they just carried on driving!”

Colin and Lorraine loved their time at Pelorus, but as their two children reached high school age, after five years of working every day, they were “dead on their feet.”

Morrie and Margaret James took over Pelorus campground in 1982.

The Davis family moved into Blenheim,

and Colin continued working for DOC as a conservation officer, which took over Pelorus Bridge campground in 1987.

“We were very sad to leave, but we had a time slot put on it, we wanted to leave while we were still fresh.”

Big variety for garden tour

By Robbie Parkes Cacti may not be the most common feature in your average Marlborough garden, but a tour of Donna Anderson’s expansive property certainly showcases the prickly plant.

Donna’s garden at her Brancott Road residence is one of ten gardens on display for the annual Wairau Valley Parish Church garden tour.

Now in its 21st year, the tour is giving focus to the Fairhall area, looking at the wide variety of shrubbery, foliage and flowers in some of the region’s best kept gardens.

Donna has been involved in the tour in previous years, but over time, her garden

has expanded and grown even more.

“It’s always evolving,” she said.

Overall, her garden sprawls around one acre, but covers a wide variety of plants, including native Australian types, cacti and flowers.

Tour organiser Nicki Stace said there is a big range of gardens to see this year.

“People are very generous at showing their gardens.

“And we’ve got a few new, different gardens, and some that are already established.”

Being in the midst of spring, means lush gardens with lovely flowers are beginning

to emerge, she said.

There are a few that require a bit of a walk, but at certain points there will be a sausage sizzle available, as well as a few cold drinks on hand.

Money raised from the tour goes towards the Wairau Valley Anglican Parish, mainly to help with running costs.

The tour takes place this weekend, October 13 and 14.

Programmes are available from Islington Gardens, Renwick Dairy, Selmes Garden Trust Nursery, Roselands Pets and Plants, Devon Nursery, and Springlands Garden Centre & Cafe.

Impact of Clifford Bay Government responsibility M a r lb o r o u g h M ayo r Alistair Sowman right, says any future decision on moving the inter-island port to Clifford Bay will be based on the national economic benefit of such a move.

He suggested ferry operators would face difficulties getting renewals for current resource consents which

expire in 2015 and that it was “prudent for the Government

to have an alternative”.

Mr Sowman says there is

no reason to suggest the existing resource consents are under threat or that conditions are likely to be changed significantly.

He said the continued improvement to ship designs have minimised the impact of the ships’ wakes and the Sounds shoreline is not being subject to the wave damage caused by the previous fast ferries which crossed Cook Strait.

“There is no talk of ferries being required to reduce

speed and drop a crossing from their timetable so, really, this is not a factor in the Clifford Bay debate.”

Mr Sowman said the future of Clifford Bay will be a national government decision and it will be the Government’s responsibility to ensure that all economic factors are taken into account, including the direct effect on the Marlborough economy of any move.

However, Mr Sowman said that it was widely understood

that the final decision would be determined by the overall national benefit of moving the terminal further south.

“There are a number of factors to be considered including the economic benefit of faster north-south travel times for rail and trucking freight measured against the cost of building and maintaining a terminal off Marlborough’s eastern coastline rather than at the head of the Sounds,” he said.

Fashion show ‘a roaring success’

By Chris Tobin A fundraising fashion show for Alzheimers Marlborough last week was a “roaring success” says society spokesperson Jean Main.

“We raised over $5000 on the night and all of the money will be used to benefit those affected by dementia in Marlborough,” she said.

Held at the Clubs of Marlborough Main Hall, 20 models took part in the Forget Me Not Fashion Show which was enjoyed by a crowd of 200.

Jean said the force behind the show was Denyse Saunders who is well known in the fashion, beauty and modelling industries.

“Most of the models came from Marlborough Girls’ College and Denyse spent hours schooling them,” Jean said.

“It was a huge undertaking and

Denyse ran the whole show.”

Jean said the money raised would go into the society’s general funds.

The society had many expenses having to maintain a building, run a van and provide daycare four days a week.

“Daycare is a wonderful thing. We pick them up at 10 and drop them off at three o’clock. There’s no pressure and they have a wonderful day with their friends.”

Alzheimers Marlborough was formed to assist and support carers and families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.

Jean said if people were concerned about any member of their family showing signs of dementia they should contact the society at 5776172 between 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday or visit the centre at 8 Wither Rd.

Here in Marlborough we are spoilt when it comes to accessing local fresh fish at our stores, at good prices.

Lawrence Gledhill of Ngamahau Fishing Fresh Fish, in Kent St, Picton, has been in the fishing game for more than 35 years, and as a fish retailer for the past 20 years.

All the fish in his counter is caught locally, except for the salmon that is from Stewart Island, but smoked by his team.

He sells to a lot of local restaurants and chefs, and his fish stand is a familiar sight at the Sunday Farmers’ Market in Blenheim.

Blue cod season is coming up, but at the moment scallop season is in full swing.

“Look at the rule books and be safe,” she said.

Recreational fishing for blue cod in Marlborough Sounds From April 1, 2011, recreational fishers were allowed to take blue cod from the Marlborough Sounds area.

Rules were applied, for different areas of Marlborough: Area 1: Marlborough Sounds.

Closed every year between September 1 and December 19, (both days inclusive).

You can only take or possess two blue cod per fisher at any one time.

This applies even if you caught the fish from outside the area and you are transporting the fish through the area.

You can only have blue cod 30-35cm.

You must not fillet the blue cod, unless you eat them immediately.

Any blue cod eaten form part of your daily limit.

You must not use more than two hooks per fishing line, when fishing for any finfish species (excluding longlines).

Fishers staying in baches and aboard vessels are not exempt from these regulations and may only land or transport by sea, two whole or gutted blue cod on any one day.

Area 2: Maud Island Area: closed year round.

No finfish of any species can be taken.

Area 3: Challenger East Area.

The daily limit is three blue cod per fisher at 30cm or greater.

When accumulating your daily bag limits, you may only have a maximum of six blue cod at any one time, even if you caught the fish from outside the area.

You must not fillet blue cod, unless you eat them immediately.

Any blue cod eaten form a part of your daily limit.

During the open season you cannot transport blue cod from other Fishery Management Areas into the Marlborough Sounds Area, unless it meets the regulations.

Veteran riders to tear up Northbank

By Robbie Parkes Motocross veterans from all over the country will be making their way to Marlborough this weekend to tear up the track at the 2012 JT Racing New Zealand Veterans & Womens MX Champs.

More than 110 riders are signed up for the national competition, hosted by the Marlborough Motorcycle Club, with the action kicking off at Wadsworths MX Park, Bartletts creek, Northbank.

There are five races per class, over the two-day event.

The competition pits the aged, but experience riders against one-another in the Veterans grades, starting at 30 years-old increasing in five year age groups, up until 50 plus - one of the larger classes.

The Women’s championship includes 12 to 16 years-olds right through to 30 plus.

Co-ordinator Craig Douglas said the event brings a bit of a cross-section of competitors.

Numerous current and ex New Zealand champions will be hitting the track, including Marlborough’s very own Moston Wadsworth, reigning 50 plus national title holder.

“He’s just won numerous, 20 or more, New Zealand titles,” he said.

“He’s the Richie McCaw of motocross.”

The likes of Steve Lange and Mike Holland will also be amongst the group of riders representing the region at the weekend.

Craig said the competitors really make the most of the track, “cutting it to shreds,” making it a great sporting event to watch.

“It’s a good track for spectators, it’s natural terrain with a few man-made improvements.

“We’d like to think we’d get about 400 or 500 people each day.”

It is a great family day out, said Craig, there is plenty of coffee and hot food available too to keep the cold out.

The general public can head along from 10am, with gate charges of $5 for adults and gold coin entry for kids.

Directions to the venue will be sign posted from State Highway 6 at the Wairau bridge.

The Marlborough Motocross Championship kicks off on Labour weekend, also at the same venue.

The best two performing local riders were third placed Pam Neal riding Granitz Arrow in the Teschmaker Trophy, and second placed Jess Sonne riding her pony Showtym Nip ‘N’ Tuck in the Penfolds Pony Trophy.
