Richy died in February in Whangarei, following a two year battle with colon cancer, just a matter of weeks after Amelia was born and days after the couple were married.

The school’s Parent Group, teachers and students have been working hard behind the scenes since the beginning of the year to organise this event, and say this year there are some very exciting features.

If you love a challenge there will be a range of inflatables including the Zorb Balls, the Mega Course, a Gladiator Ring as well as bouncy castles.

For the animal lovers, pony rides will be available as well as a petting zoo and an SPCA Marlborough ‘adopt a pet’ display.

There will also be ‘Smash a Car’ where kids can smash a car with a bat, paintball, monster truck rides and a speedway car display for those who enjoy an adrenaline rush.

More than 435 hectares of new forest will be planted in the Marlborough region through the Government’s Afforestation Grants Scheme (AGS).

Havelock will be one of a handful of rural areas to lose their Saturday postal service from November.

New Zealand Post has confirmed about six percent of NZ Post rural delivery customers will move from six to five day delivery, Monday to Friday, in some rural areas near Auckland, Wellington, Whanganui, Rotorua, Havelock, Oamaru, Dunedin and Invercargill.

Students arrive in formal fashion, carnival style Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk The lead up to the Combined Colleges Formal on Friday night was nothing but suspenseful for those attending, but when the moment arrived the students went all out.

Transporting them to the ball, held at the Marlborough Convention Centre, was everything from large transport trucks adorned

with carnival decorations, through to classic cars and even a boat on a trailer.

The excitement levels were at a high pitch as demonstrated by one group of students who arrived on a trailer giving a cultural performance, and from the cheers of the crowd when a new group arrived.

For those who braved the cold to arrive early and secure a good viewing position, they weren’t

disappointed.

Looking dapper in their suit and tie ensembles, the boys showed off their sharp dress sense while the girls dazzled their way along the red carpet.

Inside the country style carnival themed decorations and photo booths added to the atmosphere, and even some of the teachers embraced the carnival spirit with their outfits.

Last year’s Memory Walk attracted a large following.

Step up for dementia Blenheim is host to a Memory Walk this month, with young and old stepping up and walking for dementia.

The Memory Walk will take place on Saturday, September 19 beginning at 10am at the Munro Street carpark.

Walkers progress down the Taylor River walkway through to Seymour Square before finishing at The Forum.

On completion there will be a hot milo drink and a display will be held with information stalls and Alzheimers Marlborough staff available to talk to people.

Alzheimers Marlborough centre manager Donna Rainbird says she’s looking forward to a good turn-out.

“Last year was the first year we held a Memory Walk. This year we’ve pulled out all stops to make this bigger and better, and registrations are running hot.

“People’s enthusiasm to get out there and draw attention to dementia, is hugely encouraging.”

Alzheimers NZ executive director Catherine Hall says the Memory Walks

are a way to shine light on dementia in New Zealand.

“Dementia is the major public health issue of our time, and these Memory Walks allow us to publicly support people with dementia and their families, friends and carers. They’re also a time for us to remember the people we know or have known with dementia.

“Raising awareness through these walks is an important step – we need to do all we can to help people with dementia to live well.”

An estimated 60,000 people are living with dementia in New Zealand and this is expected to increase to 154,000 by 2050 due to the ageing population.

The whole community is invited to join in and preregistrations of walkers can be done at Alzheimers Marlborough (8 Wither Road, Witherlea, Blenheim) or by emailing.alzheimersmarlb@xtra. co.nz.

Dogs’ safe return wanted

By Jacob Page Michelle Wratt is desperate to have her two dogs back that she believes were stolen on Friday afternoon from a farm near Kaituna.

Billy, a mastiff cross boxer and Ben, a bully cross are believed to have been taken between 12.30 and 1pm on Friday afternoon with one of the dogs being taken from a kennel.

Both dogs are 18 months old.

“We think this has been a deliberate act in the middle of the day, especially when one

of the dogs was secure in a kennel,” Michelle says.

“Whoever has done it has clearly gone to some effort.”

“Billy is so friendly that she’ll go with anyone, she loves people.

“They are members of the family and there is a reward for their return.”

Michelle says a police report has been filed but if the dogs are returned safe and well she would not pursue legal action.

Civic Theatre Trust general manager Andrew Scott sits at the trust’s Yamaha grand piano, which is to be joined by a full-size concert grand donated by a Marlborough couple.

The new ASB Civic Theatre will have a full-size grand piano thanks to the generosity of a Marlborough couple.

The couple, who want to remain anonymous, have gifted the new theatre a Steinway D274, recognised as the ultimate performance model produced by the top piano-maker in the world.

A brand new, full-size grand piano would cost nearly $250,000. The piano being gifted to the theatre has been purchased from a private owner in Auckland.

Theatre manager Andrew Scott says the piano has only ever been in a private home and is in absolutely top condition.

He is excited about the donation and thrilled to have a full-sized Steinway grand piano for the theatre.

“I run out of superlatives to describe the generosity of this gift,” he says.

The Theatre Trust already has a Yamaha C3 grand piano, which it bought for about $25,000 after a fund-raising campaign in 2004 when a Steinway it had been loaned had to be returned to its owner.

Andrew Scott says the piano gift came about by chance. The couple were paying for sponsored seats in the new theatre and asked him about the existing piano.

He told them the Yamaha was a good piano, and still in top condition, but he was worried its sound would be too small for the new theatre. Mr Scott says the next thing he knew, the couple had contacted a Trust member

with the news they had bought the Steinway in Auckland and were gifting it to the new 720-seat theatre.

Trust fundraising manager Ross Anderson will not reveal any details of the couple but describes them as generous, communityminded supporters of the new theatre.

Andrew Scott says top-flight soloists, recital accompanists and orchestras expect a theatre to have a full-size grand piano and the Steinway will add to the ASB Theatre’s reputation as a performance venue.

The Trust will keep the smaller Yamaha for rehearsals and for use in the smaller performance space. At 185cm long, it is smaller and easier to move than the 274cm Steinway, which will be kept for prestige concerts.

Inside the new theatre, a special air-conditioned “garage” is being created under the stage for the two pianos so they can be stored in a controlled environment. This is essential to maintaining their quality, Andrew Scott says. They will be raised into the auditorium on the hoist that creates the orchestra pit at the front of the stage.

The ASB Theatre is scheduled to be opened in February and the Trust has started a final two-month campaign to raise $2M to fit out the venue with specialist theatrical equipment, mainly sound and lighting gear. Much of the funds will come from the sponsorship of auditorium seats. Details of seat packages are available from the theatre office in Blenheim.

Boneseed is being eradicated around the Marlborough Sounds.

Banishing boneseed from Marlborough The Marlborough District Council and Department of Conservation staff are once again tackling boneseed in the Marlborough Sounds in their long term goal to eradicate this weed from the district.

Fast-growing and a prolific seeder, boneseed can rapidly replace native plants, and its dense thickets can also restrict people’s access to beaches.

Introduced from South Africa as an ornamental garden plant, boneseed has been in New Zealand since the 1870s.

It has become widespread in coastal habitats throughout the country.

In Marlborough, scattered infestations exist in the Marlborough Sounds and on the Rarangi coast and it has been declared a “total control pest plant”.

Large specimens can produce up to 50,000 seeds with seed remaining viable for up to 10 years.

Boneseed’s fruit is eaten by birds and possums which spread the undigested seed.

The weed programme has been occurring annually since 2001, and DOC ranger Johnny Joseph is pleased with the low number of plants they have seen this year.

“It looks like we are finally getting on top of this weed with very few plants found where they used to be abundant.

However, we still need to be vigilant in hunting out this weed, as it can grow in low light under dense vegetation and can colonise a large area unnoticed”.

Dear Ed, We would like to say a big thank you to the very kind lady who knocked on our door Sunday night to enquire if we had a white cat.

A cat had been run over on Maxwell Road and she kindly picked it up and put it on the side of the road and then went out of her way to find out the owner.

She found out that we had a white cat and insisted that she would pick it up and bring it to our house.

This lady was NOT the person who hit the cat but a wonderful thoughtful person who cared and she really made things easier for us.

As we were wrapping up the cat getting it ready for burial our own white cat walked in so now we have peace of mind again.

Dear Ed, It always ceases to amaze me, how many people don’t realize when you come to a crossing with people on it, some people don’t know how to STOP. Today, my friend and I went to Countdown in town to get groceries.

We left about 2 pm.

As we left the building, we went out onto the crossing to her car, only to have an ignorant vineyard driver, (Driving an old white Ace viticulture van,) drive straight through the crossing without giving way.

How rude is that?

The foreigner obviously doesn’t understand the meaning of STOP when it comes to approaching crossing with people on or near the crossings.

Makes one wonder how he got a license?

Adventure beckons

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Karen Jennison first jumped out of a plane for her 30th birthday, now she is planning to do it again for charity.

Karen, owner of Curves Blenheim has signed up to be one of 18 taking part in the Foundation for Youth Development Marlborough’s ‘Drop your Boss Skydive’ fundraising event for Kiwi Can next month.

“Last year I heard about the FYD’s Drop your Boss event on the car-parking building and thought then it would be great to get involved. So when the skydive came up I thought ‘even better’.

“It’s a great idea, very adventurous with a new spin on it. It’s right up my crazy alley,” she laughs.

To make this a success Karen has been encouraging friends, family and the ladies who go along to Curves to make a donation.

To add an incentive, she is giving people who donate the opportunity to go into a draw to win a free month at Curves.

“I’m motivated to do it, hopefully people on board too and donate,” she says.

Asked who her biggest supporters were, Karen says her family.

“They weren’t surprised.

“They just expect me to do these crazy things now. One of my children did ask if I could do flips as I jumped out that might be a bit much,” she jokes.

Growing his presence Sam Forrest is happy to be out of the shadow of his family’s wine business… for now.

The talented Marlburian is taking his high energy approach to marketing to the national stage with energy drink V and its parent company.

He speaks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about his national success, his entrepreneurial ways and why the family vineyard is sure to lure him back to Marlborough one day.

Sam Forrest has come a long way from the young boy charming American wine connoisseurs at his family’s winery.

The 25-year-old is now a Brand Manager at Carbonated Soft Drinks which, in simple terms, is the company that produces drinks like ‘V’ and Pepsi.

While he still has some commitments to the Forrest Estate Wines company that is still very much in his family, he is turning heads nationally.

Sam was named New Zealand Rookie Marketer of the Year.

His work on new drink V Kaboom was the catalyst for propelling him into the spotlight.

“I was very stoked to win the award, it’s validation that I’m on the right track and doing well which I think is something everyone craves in any job.

Sam says the basics of marketing he learnt as a child in the vineyard have helped mould him into the person he has become.

“It’s like all family businesses, everyone helps when needed and you do all kinds of jobs.

“I remember I’d often pester my parents asking if I could take some of the, usually American, tourists on the tour because I knew, even as a kid that they had money to spend and tipping was customary.

“So I’d do the tour and try to be as charming as possible and make myself some decent money at the end of it.

“I also used to make postcards to sell in the shop, I was always thinking.”

Sam says the family business is always in the background.

“It’s always home and I have so much respect for my parents and what they achieved and now the next generation is having more of an impact and those skills I’ve learnt growing up have helped me when I decided to do my own thing.

“Any business is all about people and I learnt the ability to talk to anyone in any role within our family business, whether it was an executive or a vineyard worker and I think that’s really helped with my progression.”

With what I’m doing at Frucor at the moment, I’m really enjoying it.

He says it’s important to be committed to your product but not let it absorb you.

“I think you can get emotionally attached to a product that you are trying to take to market.

At the same time you have to maintain the hunger and continue to be innovative so you produce a product that a lot of people want.”

He says competing against a major brand like Coke can be challenging but also offers a lot of freedom.

“It has its moments being the other guy in the market but I believe that we as individuals are given more creative freedom to come up with ideas for new products.”

Sam says he thrives on creating a product people want to buy rather than having a product where he tries to get them to buy it.

“Marketing and branding are very important to ensure you’re on the right track but if our drinks don’t taste good then it doesn’t matter how nice the branding or packaging is.”

Brewing some fun The children at Pelorus Community Preschool have brewed up a lot of fun in recent weeks by setting up their own coffee shops and making pretend hot drinks for themselves and their teachers.

This pretend play has been ongoing for a number of weeks so to extend their learning and add to the fun, the teachers invited local coffee cart owner Kylie Quinn to visit the preschool.

Alongside Kylie, each child was able to make their own hot chocolate while others were able to go into the cart and help serve.

The children, parents and staff enjoyed their hot drinks and being able to see exactly what goes on behind the scenes in a coffee cart.

Opportunity in China’s wine region for locals Last week’s visit by a Marlborough delegation to the Chinese wine-growing region of Ningxia has opened the way to broker new business relationships between the regions while the Chinese industry is still in its formative stages.

Delegation members say the early contact and the chance to establish person-to-person links during a visit sanctioned at regional government level had created access that would not otherwise have been possible for individual businesses.

Although the visit was primarily for familiarisation, one Blenheim-based company made a significant sale during the trip.

Ningxia province is about 800 km west of Beijing and its wine industry has been growing rapidly since the 1990s. It has 34,000ha in grapes, compared with Marlborough’s 23,000ha of vines, and is now the fifth largest grape-growing area in the world with plans to double its size in the coming decade. It focuses mainly on red wine blends, with a small amount of chardonnay and Italian Riesling. Sauvignon Blanc vines do not grow there.

A 17-member delegation from Ningxia visited Marlborough earlier this year, primarily to look at wine tourism and marketing, although discussions extended to winemaking technology and vineyard management and

the opportunity that Ningxia presents for Marlborough businesses.

In return, the six-member Marlborough delegation, representing the wine technology and wine research industries, were hosted by the Ningxia Wine Bureau last week.

Marlborough District Council economic development officer Cathie Bell accompanied the delegation to explore the potential for a future regional friendship agreement between Marlborough and Ningxia’s provincial government.

Cathie says Marlborough has a good reputation with those in the Chinese wine industry and there appears to be genuine interest in the potential for mutually beneficial exchanges.

The visit had also helped to show China that New Zealand, and Marlborough in particular, made a contribution to the global wine industry, she said.

The business people on the trip say the visit had given them a good overview of the situation in Ningxia.

Marlborough wine equipment supply company Vitis made a significant sale of winery equipment during this visit and chief executive Cathy Robinson expects to sell more in the coming months, having now set up supply outlets in Ningxia.

Paddon and Kennard keep pace in Australia

By Jacob Page Hayden Paddon and Blenheim’s John Kennard scored their fourth top-five result of the World Rally Championship season so far with a strong run to fifth overall in the World Rally Championships Rally Australia.

The two Kiwis had high hopes for a podium finish at this event, the closest to a home rally for the New Zealanders.

Having held third place overall after Friday’s opening loop of four stages, their hopes were dashed by handling issues and the pair finished Friday in sixth.

The duo blitzed the field on Saturday morning’s first two stages to secure two consecutive WRC stage wins – and take his career WRC stage win total to seven.

For Pure Samoa, Kennar’s serving and spiking was impressive while Filipo Vaetui stood out as well, cheered on by a vocal crowd and they won the last set 25-21 Dank Lords had the double header and they won their first game against Bella’s Team in three tight sets 25-21, 25-18 and 26-14.

Dank Lords were well warmed up to play their second game but Cri Clovers really took it to them in the first set.

Cri Clovers had three set points before Dank Lords got the two-point advantage at 29-27.

Cri Clovers carried on their great play and stole set two with Phil Gleeson and Tim Abrahams being stand outs.

Gleeson did a fantastic job of spotting the gaps for valuable points.

Harrison Kilgour playing for Dank Lords got some towering spikes as did Toby Hogg. The fitness and youth of Dank Lords came through in third set to give them the set win 25-15 and the game.

Afa Lauvai and Kaisa Faalilo from Uso Fiafia showed some great serving in their game against Treefellas, While Treefellas’ captain, David James also played well. Uso took the first set easily 25-14 then seemed to ease off a little so as to give both teams a better game but still took the last two sets 25-20 although it was a closer third set at 25-23.

Marlborough brave in defeat

Marlborough’s indoor bowlers were brave in defeat against Canterbury in their interprovincial match at Simcox Stadium at the weekend.

Winning three each of fours and pairs, Marlborough needed to win six of 12 final round pairs encounters to claim the win however Canterbury won seven to scramble home for the win 56-52.

Futsal teams impress in debut outing

By Jacob Page Marlborough futsal coach Marcello Pinheiro is hailing Marlborough’s first age-group matches in the sport as a success.

A junior team and a 12 to 14-year-old team travelled to Nelson to take on Nelson Bays with the older boys prevailing 8-0 and the youngsters drawing 4-4 despite dominating much of the second half.

Marcello said he was delighted with how the two games went considering all the players were part of his training academy.

“The atmosphere was great and all the guys played really well.

“They had been looking forward to the

games for some time and I think they showed what they had learnt.”

The indoor version of soccer is popular in Pinheiro’s native Brazil and he believes it offers young players a chance to touch the ball more than in regular football which helps them improve their skill level faster.

Marcello says he would like Nelson Bays to play games in Blenheim in the near future but he would also explore options for matches against Christchurch in an effort to get his players more exposure and game time.

“For now we will keep training until we have a league here in Marlborough.”
