most widely-used power company as the region’s most expensive retailer. Figures supplied to The Sun this week by energy comparison site ‘Switchme’ show TrustPower,

used by an estimated 70 per cent of Marlborough homes, as being nearly $15 a month more expensive than any other company, even with Contact’s price increase. Continued on Page 2.

Paulette Wyatt, the mother of 12-year-old Jacqueline Wyatt, right, who was seriously injured after colliding with a truck trailer while biking to school recently, has been assured her job at nanny agency ‘Annie’s Nannies’ is secure. The Sun reported last week Mrs Wyatt was unsure whether or not she would be able to return to work when she returns to Blenheim, after a family friend expressed doubts. The Sun has since been contacted by the mother of the triplets who Mrs Wyatt had been looking after, who says she will be gladly welcomed back. “She still has her job and we are really eager to have her back working with us,� she says. Mrs Wyatt also confirmed she had been told she can take as much time as she needs before returning to work. Note: Jacqueline was hit by the truck trailer; not the truck itself, as the Sun reported last week.

Switchme pricing manager Brett O’Donnell says the gap between Marlborough’s most and least expensive energy company [Genesis] is one of the largest in the country, and is encouraging people to “shop around�. “TrustPower put their prices up by 4.3% in March this year and, given that nearly three quarters of all Marlborough households are with TrustPower, it makes the impact so much greater.� The figures show a ‘low-user’ household with one to two people will pay an average of $162.56 a month with TrustPower, compared with $131.63 with Genesis. A three to four person household will pay $258.37 compared with $206.34 respectively. Mr O’Donnell says the Switchme site enables people to accurately compare energy prices, something which they need to do to in order to keep up with price changes. “Power companies do

Going with another retailer they could save $30 a month.� Contact Energy communications advisor Jeremy Seed says the rise is reflective of the increasing cost of generation electricity. “We had a number of people on a pricing promise which means we don’t increase their price, but that scheme finished prior to December 1,� he says. “I’d expect there will be some residual movement from our customers, there’s always some movement when there’s a price increase.�

Finding work in a roundabout way The Blenheim man who resorted to attaching a sign to a Grove Road roundabout in order to find work has since found employment. Anita Donnelly says her husband Martyn has been working as a forklift operator at Translink for the past week and is getting “good hours�. “It’s really cool, it’s all going well,� she says. “We don’t know if it’s going to turn into full-time work or not, but fingers crossed.� Mr Donnelly attached the advertisement two weeks ago simply stating “job wanted� and his phone number, highlighting the unemployment problem in the region.

By Celeste Lodewyk If you saw a brand new red Suzuki Swift driving down the road slowly yesterday morning, it was Blenheim woman Hilary McCarthy. Hilary was named the winner of New World Blenheim’s Great Car Giveaway promotion, and after receiving the keys from owner operators Andrea Boock and Mark Elkington she gingerly drove home to show off her gleaming prize. “I am absolutely thrilled. I was quite amazed when I found out I’d won. I have never had a new car so to get given a new car is just out of this world,� she said. Hilary, who turned 72-years-old earlier this month, has been shopping at New World for 11-years. “I love coming here and seeing all the friendly faces, I wouldn’t shop anywhere else.� Equally as pleased was Hilary’s husband Ian who said the couple own two old cars. “Hilary has been driving a Toyota Corona and I drive a Toyota Corolla

which I have owned for 15-years. “So we do have an attachment to our old cars, but we are both over the moon with our new one,� he grinned. Asked where she planned to drive first with her new car, Hilary laughed and replied “home, and very slowly.� “But I am looking forward to driving around town to get used to it, then I might plan a trip to see family and friends in Nelson and Christchurch, maybe even Wellington.� “Plus I am looking forward to parking it, my car isn’t the best to park,� she said. Hilary simply spent $50 at New World Blenheim between October 11 and November 7 and swiped her Fly Buys card to receive an entry into the competition. Mark and Andrea said the giveaway had been the best promotion they had run. “Having a car in store has generated a lot of interest and it is such a great prize,� he said.

TH Barnes and Co Ltd was named the winner of the Health Project in the Registered Master Builders 2010 House of the year and RMB 2010 Commercial Project of the Year for the Springlands Lifestyle Village.

The awards were announced on Saturday and when the Sun spoke with TH Barnes and Co Ltd chief executive John Smithies, congratulations were still going around. “I would like to thank project foreman Neil Phillips for his hard work and efforts that he and his team put in which were what won this award. “We are all rapt to have won this award and for us this is a real feather in the cap for Marlborough to win such a prestigious award on a national level,� he says. The finalists – all

National Gold Reserve winners – were selected from 530 entries in 19 regional competitions held throughout New Zealand during June, July and August. Previous Commercial Project winners in the Marlborough region were Thompson & Devanny Construction Co Ltd who won the 2004 Commercial Award over $5 million for the Bay of Many Coves Resort in the Queen Charlotte Sounds, and in 2006 Robinson Construction Ltd who won the QBE Insurance Retail and Business Commercial Project for the Cellar Door in Blenheim.

Leo’s help spread Christmas cheer Members of the Marlborough Girls College Leo club were doing their bit to brighten Christmas for the region’s disadvantaged families last week, wrapping presents donated to the club by the Blue Door recycling centre. Year 13 Marlborough Girls College student Hannah Cocker, president of the club, says they received close to 200 presents which were then handed on

to the Women’s Refuge and ‘Birthright’. Those agencies are now distributing them to families under their care. “All the presents are pretty good, because they’re all brand new,� Hannah says. “Some of them still even have the price tags on them. “It feels good to help out some families who can’t afford Christmas - it’s like a good-will gesture.�

Underdogs take out two South Island racing titles By Damian George Two Blenheim racing teams have defied the odds to take out dual titles in the South Island Endurance Series which finished in Christchurch on Saturday. Pat Heagney, right, won the Matt Heagney memorial trophy for the four-cylinder class, dedicated to his son who died in August last year, while Scott McDermid and father Craig won the 3501CC class. “I don’t think people realise Heagney finished fifth in the final race at Ruapuna raceway, in what context we are racing,� while the McDermids finished he says. “We were just a little team second in their race. Heagney also finished third from Blenheim racing against in the overall standings, taking GT3 Porsches. “It was a pretty big achievement into account all classes on show for us and the family - we’re just throughout the competition. He says the result is a huge little boys on a big boys paddock achievement for a team competing really.� He also says the victory was an against much more fancied cars emotional one as he was racing from across the South Island. 7 ( % . / . ,9 4 ( % " % 3 4 7 ) , , $ /

They’re some pretty big players in there so we were pretty happy. Scott says the team managed to avoid any major mechanical mishaps which have dogged the team of late. “Nothing to stop us from finishing anyway. There’s a couple of things we need to do to the car before the next race but nothing major.�

Mistletoe Market this Saturday The annual ‘Mistletoe Market’ is being held this Saturday in the area around ‘The Forum’ and adjoining areas of Queen and High Streets from 8:45am to 2pm. This Blenheim Lions Club project has enjoyed huge popular success over the many years it has been held and this year is promising to be just as successful with the ‘full house’ sign out with the maximum 164 sites pre sold. The Lions club view this project as one which benefits many people in many ways.

The stall sites are booked by clubs, organisations, and individuals who use the opportunity to raise funds for their activities from the thousands of visitors who come to enjoy the ‘Christmas Market’ atmosphere. The small fee charged for each stall creates a profit which adds to the thousands of dollars which the Blenheim Lions Club distributes to numerous needy groups and individuals in our community each year.

Shake for a good cause By Celeste Lodewyk Four local Zumba instructors have organised a ‘Zumbathon’ to raise funds for the Pike Mine River Family Relief Fund. Daylene Cooper, Wiki Chilvers, Huia Crosby and Maryanne Tairea will be hosting the two hour Zumba session which is open to all ages and abilities. Because each instructor has her own dance style, the session will

be broken into four half hour segments headed by a different instructor each time. If two hours sounds daunting, do not worry, Wiki says, you can stay as long as you want. “If people can’t come for the whole two hour session it’s not a problem, Finish when you want to. This is all about getting together and celebrating the lives of the men who died at Pike River

Mine and to raise funds for their families,� she says. There will spot prizes on the night which have been kindly donated by Fairweathers, The Honey Company, Wairau Pharmacy and Liquorland Blenheim. Bohally Intermediate School is donating the use of their hall for the Zumbathon. Entry is an open donation and the Zumbathon runs from 6pm to 8pm.

Wairau Valley School students paid tribute last week to the 29 New Zealand men who lost their lives in the Pike River mine tragedy. The school’s flag flew at half-mast on Thursday and Friday, while the pupils observed a minute’s silence, laid roses at the bottom of the flag pole, and wrote poems expressing their sadness.

“We just felt a connection and wanted to mark it in some way,� acting deputy principal Amy Eberhardt says. “The West Coast is only just over the hill, so to speak.� Mrs Eberhardt says the mother of one of the students has a history of mining in the family, which made the tragedy more poignant.

Terrible tragedy. I feel awful for the people involved, families etc.

What’s in a name? A brief history: Sinclair Street With Mark Stevenson First National

James Sinclair, known as the founder of Blenheim, was an active supporter of Marlborough’s independence from Nelson, gained in 1859. He was also elected to the first borough council in 1869 serving until 1872. A. Beverley, in ‘The First One Hundred’ recorded that by August 1879 there were “stormy scenesâ€? at council when Sinclair, as the largest ratepayer, opposed the proposal for an annual rate of 1/- in the ÂŁ. He wanted a rate of 6d, but lost. The next year, he was reported as appealing to the magistrate against his rates which he held were the result of faulty valuation. Again he failed. Marlborough Online records that Sinclair was born in Caithness, Scotland in 1817. He moved to Wellington in 1852 with his wife and child and with, it is recorded (perhaps unkindly) a nurse selected for her plainness so as not to attract a husband. (The strategy failed dismally as she ultimately announced her marriage to a Mr. Brindle.) Sinclair first set up shop in Nelson then built the first hut at Wairau in 1852, just nine years after the Wairau Affray. The Sinclair’s new home was built in what is now Sinclair Street. As well as building Wairau’s first wooden house, Sinclair built a row of buildings along the edge of the Opawa River including a bank, the Victoria Hotel and a general store. The Saint Clair winery name originates from the vineyard’s main property, originally settled by the Sinclair family. In time the name reverted to the original, Saint Clair. Through his many businesses, Sinclair amassed considerable wealth. He died two years after his wife in 1897 aged 79, with a reputation for always having his door open to both poor and rich. All new outpatients? Recently I had cause to attend an appointment at the all new “Outpatients Department� at Wairau Hospital. What an eye-opener! This new area reminded me of an emergency department in a hospital in a war zone. There were people everywhere, in a facility that is clearly too small for it’s intended use, there appeared to be no organization with a number of the staff wandering around looking like “stunned mullets�, and there were even staff having their afternoon tea in a patient waiting room. While I appreciate the fact that a bright shiny new facility has been built, it strikes me that perhaps this new colocation of the Outpatient departments was not really planned, just thrown together as an afterthought. The most appalling thing for me was that from where I was sitting in the waiting room, I could see straight into what appeared to be the nurses/ administration area, (looked more like a shoebox to me with far too many people in it for it’s size) and was able to hear quite clearly a conversation being held on the telephone regarding another patient, their name, their illness, and what their treatment was. I find this totally unprofessional and I would not like to think that a total stranger could go to the hospital and find out what was wrong with me! There were no details left out! On reflection, this is not a staff problem, more a management failure.

Over the years, I have had contact with both the Surgical and Medical Outpatient departments. My experience of the Surgical department left me in no doubt that this was a department with a lot of problems. Just getting an appointment for an “urgent� referral was an issue in itself, and organization was not something that could be associated with this department. I have also had a large number of dealings with the Medical Outpatients Department and, given that departments organized, professional and friendly approach, I know which one I preferred. Quite clearly, there is a bureaucrat or manager somewhere who felt they had to justify their position so they have taken something that worked perfectly well (Medical Outpatients) and made the decision to combine it with something that is seriously flawed (Surgical Outpatients). I guess my primary concern is that amidst this chaos there is a great possibility of paperwork being lost or overlooked. The problem of course is that they are not just pieces of paper, they are peoples live. How long before the lost piece of paper equals a lost life? I sincerely hope it does not happen, but more so I hope it’s not me or one of mine. A Nervous Patient

Embrace all people Today I was reading the current issue of The Blenheim Sun and stumbled across Chris Brosnan’s Letter to the Ed, regarding the Bible Answer question.�I know that homosexuality is an abomination and a sin, but do the scriptures address how to treat a homosexual person?� (published 26 October). What utterly horrified me were, not only the narrow-minded views of Pastor Jeff Williams, but that the editor chose to publish the Bible Answer in the first place. Furthermore, The Sun reinforced this judgemental view of homosexuality by later Mr Brosnan’s

Letter to the Ed, which applauded “pastor Jeff’s last Bible Answer on the sin of Homosexuality�. I am disappointed with The Blenheim Sun for validating these judgemental opinions by publishing them. People volunteer their time and services for many different reasons, but for what ever reason – volunteering can be rewarding, challenging and varied. It also provides many opportunities to learn new skills and to further develop existing ones. The Sun caught up with Hospice Shop manager Marlene Weatherall to discuss the importance of volunteers and

One exciting feature of today’s breakfast is a speech being made by the country’s longest serving manager of a volunteer centre in NZ, Ruth Gardner who is also the manager from Volunteering Canterbury.

The Hospice Shop, Deja-Vu was established as a quality charity shop in 2005 to significantly assist the Marlborough Hospice Trust in providing ongoing financial support to

the Marlborough Community Hospice. Since the shop’s expansion earlier in the year the need for more volunteers has risen, Marlene says. “We have a larger shop space, more goods to sell, a larger customer service counter and now eftpos. This all contributes to us being much busier and a larger turnover, so we really need more volunteers,� she says.

Currently the Hospice Shop has 36 volunteers, all of whom are rostered on a daily basis. “Now we have a lot of new roles being created by the shop’s expansion, we are currently looking for more volunteers. “If anyone is interested and has skills with computers, customer service or simply a passion for helping others, come in and see me at the Hospice Shop,� Marlene says.

Double milestone for Blenheim Car Parts

Geoff and Coral at Blenheim Car Parts are celebrating two milestones. It is their 15th anniversary of having owned the business and the 1st anniversary for the new building in Timandra Place. When they took over back in 1995 Blenheim Car Parts was a reasonably small business in a huge shed over the tracks in Horton Street. With Geoff’s extensive knowledge and dedication the business quickly grew, sometimes supporting up to five staff at one time. After 12-years in the big building, the devastating news came that it had been sold and the business would have to move. “What a huge job that was taking three months of working until midnight most nights cataloging and packing up

everything,� they said. Finally it was done and they moved on to a new chapter. Down-sizing the business to just Geoff and Coral, and running it as a delivery service only seemed like a good idea but many customers preferred a shop to go to so they were soon on the move again. This time they have put down permanent roots in their own building in Timandra Place. As Coral says, “Moving Blenheim Car Parts again is simply not an option.� “In these tough times, recycling and second hand is a great option. Having thousands of parts for most Japanese makes and models at very reasonable prices makes Blenheim Car Parts a must if you have an accident, breakdown or fail a warrant of fitness,� Coral says.

Now that they also have the workshop set up, Geoff does mechanical repairs and parts fitting. Blenheim bakery almost ready for business The mouth watering aroma of fresh, hot bread, wholesome filled rolls and sweet bakery delicacies will soon fill the Blenheim CBD as Picton Village Bakkerij owners Peter and Rachel van Beek prepare to open their second bakery next Tuesday. The Picton Village Bakkerij in Blenheim has been three years in the planning but much to the relief of Peter, Rachel and their many excited customers the bakery will officially open its doors next week from 7am to 4pm. What began in September 2001 with a team of four staff, soon grew to 10, a number they are at today. In order to service their Blenheim customers, Picton Village Bakkerij started with the Farmers Market on a Sunday and before long they were inundated with requests to

open a bakery in Blenheim. “The idea to open a second bakery grew from there so we completed business training and gained the knowledge we needed to make this a success,� Rachel says. “Owning one business has been a huge learning curve so we wanted to be prepared with the appropriate knowledge to open in Blenheim, we felt this was the best approach.� Now in 2010 and after a long wait looking for the right place to open, Rachel and Peter found the ideal location for

their Blenheim bakkerij in The Forum. “It has an amazing front area, bright and cheerful with a relaxing atmosphere and has the bonus of being centrally located,� Peter says. “Come in and see us for a tasty lunch and meet the new Blenheim bakkerij team.�

Meet Peter and Rachel Picton Village Bakkerij owners Peter and Rachel van Beek both share a lifelong passion for food. Originally from the Netherlands, Peter came to New Zealand in 1996 where he immediately fell in love with Marlborough. He began working at Redwoodtown Bakery as the head baker and says there is nothing else he would rather be doing. “I have been a baker all my life. I went to bakery school in Holland until I was 21-years and have been involved in all aspects of the industry including sales of baking equipment, teaching and working in various countries throughout the world. “I love being around food and am passionate about what I am doing,� he says proudly. The following year Peter met Rachel who was working as a chef at a local winery. Born and raised in Marlborough,

Rachel did her chef training at the Marlborough Polytech and after finishing her training in 1996, went on to work in wineries, cafes and restaurants. “I loved the challenge of the long hours and hard work, especially working in an industry which I am so passionate about,� she smiles. After the couple met and married, they took over the Picton Village Bakkerij in September 2001. The couple was soon inundated with floods of positive feedback so they decided to open their second bakerij in Blenheim. “We are so excited and thrilled that after three and a half years of planning, the day has finally arrived,� Rachel says.

At 11am, a 39-year-old female street sweeper was arrested for possession of drug-using utensils. At 1.10pm, a 19-year-old unemployed man was arrested for growing cannabis after five small plants and drug-using utensils were found in his bedroom. It is understood he also stole alcohol from his father, police say. He has been held in custody and was due to appear in the Blenheim District Court on Wednesday. At 4pm, a 19-year-old male forestry worker was arrested for breaking a window in Leitrim Street. At 9.10pm, a 17-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching his bail conditions. Just before midnight, a 44-year-old self-employed man was arrested for threatening to kill, and breaching his bail conditions, after he sent numerous threatening text messages to the victim. He has been held in custody and will appear in the Blenheim District Court today.

At 7pm, a 25-year-old unemployed man was arrested on two warrants for his arrest. At 9.20pm, a 15-year-old female student and a 17-year-old unemployed woman were arrested for attempting to break into a car on Dashwood Street.

“Now the mo is gone, I will be able to go faster in an up and coming half marathon,� he chuckles. “The response to Movember has been really good and has encouraged more conversation about cancer and general men’s health. “The only hurdle has been keeping the mo clean – you have to double check it before going anywhere.

“This mo has been very trying,� he laughs. “I have been tempted to pick up the razor many times but I haven’t because I am committed to raising the awareness of men’s health. “And even though I couldn’t wait to get it off yesterday, I think it’s a great cause and will definitely do it again next year,� Dick says.

“It would be good if more men went and had health checks, rather than laughing at us with our mo’s,� he smiles. “I did my health check and everything came back clear which is peace of mind when you have a family. “The mo was a bit spikey this time round and has taken ages to grow. But I will definitely do it again next year. It creates an awareness which is important,� Peter says.

“Schick and Gillette shares would certainly have dropped during Movember,� Brian jokes. “Describe growing a mo? Exasperating! It’s a shame it was so multicoloured.� “I have had plenty of comments and encouragement and it’s been great to raise the awareness. But in the end – it was great to get it off,� Brian says.

Each year, “Movember� is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in New Zealand and around the world, with the sole aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health. The money raised through the Movember campaign is channelled by its men’s health partners into a number of education, research and awareness initiatives. Movember New Zealand collaborates with two men’s health partners – the Cancer Society and the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.

Baby Whisperer works wonder on baby Sativa Celeste Lodewyk

Choir’s final concerts to ‘raise the roof’ The Blenheim Choral Society Choir members are settling down after a memorable trip across the Cook Strait. Two weekends ago, the choir sailed to the North Island where they were hosted by the “Wairarapa Singers� and took part in combined choral concerts with them at Masterton and Greytown venues. A

spokesperson for the Society, Helen Chapman stated that “the Choral society here in Blenheim has been fund raising over recent months to make this trip possible and are very grateful for sponsorship received to help boost self generated fund raising through garage sales. “I’m sure that the homes

of the members involved are a couple of tonnes lighter,� she says. There is now only a two week gap before the end of year concerts will be held at the Wesley Centre in Henry Street. Of course with audience participation invited (along with any squeakers, hooters

or noise makers they will be encouraged to bring with them) the Wesley Centre should really resound. Guest artists including Sally West, a brass band ensemble, and Barry Parker are expected to feature, so the programme is going to be a very well rounded affair, Helen says.

Four-month-old Blenheim baby Sativa Scott gurgles happily in her mother’s arms after having yet another successful nap time, all thanks to New Zealand’s Baby Whisperer. Why is this you ask? Sativa’s mother Tara Scott was gifted a private session with well renowned pre and postnatal advisor Sharlene Poole (NZ Baby Whisperer). Before this Tara says Sativa barely slept during the day and was almost always overtired. This left Tara feeling tired and frazzled, unable to comfortably enjoy motherhood. Sharlene held a seminar and a number of private sessions with families on November 4, Tara and baby Sativa being one of them. “I found Sharlene’s advice and techniques really helpful and ever since, Sativa has been really content and a good sleeper,� she says. Sharlene showed Tara winding and settling techniques as well as advice on feeding Sativa with a bottle. “Before, I would pick Sativa up if she cried rather than trying to settle her which

left us both feeling tired and drained. “But what Sharlene showed us has been amazing. I went straight home and tried the techniques with Sativa and they worked straight away. I now feel more confident and Sativa is much happier, Sharlene worked wonders,� Tara says. Heavens Above personal assistant and events coordinator Carol Jacques along with Cherubs Childrenswear owner Lynda Butt and Educarents Blenheim coordinator Miranda McFarlyne were the three women responsible for organizing Sharlene’s Blenheim visit. What’s more, due to the success from her last visit, Sharlene is planning to return to Blenheim for more private consultations and workshops early next year. Super Cup kicks off By Celeste Lodewyk This Friday 16 super saloons will descend upon Blenheim for the first round of the ELF Super Cup Series, which will feature local driver Paddy North. Competing in his 2010 LRC Monaro Super Saloon, Paddy is eyeing up a top five placing amongst what has been described as “the cream of the south’s Super Saloon drivers and cars�. “It’s normal to feel a bit nervous on the day of racing but because Eastern States Speedway is my home track, I am confident of a top placing.� “But at the end of the day of all the 16 drivers competing on Friday, anyone one of us could win. It’s a combination of getting a good car setup, having the right frame of mind when racing and a bit of luck,� he says. In the line up, Super Saloon 3NZ’s Mike Verdoner will also be racing. The ELF Super Cup is a series for Super Saloons run over five rounds. Each round

contested by a minimum sixteen-car field consists of a time trial, two 15-lap heats, a two lap pole shuffle and a 25-lap feature. The feature, run over 25 laps, determines the winner for each round. Trophies are awarded for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd placed drivers across the finish line. The Series kicks off this Friday at Eastern States Speedway before carrying on to Nelson, Dunedin, Cromwell and finishing at Woodford Glen in Christchurch on March 12, 2011. Local boy Paddy who recently returned from the Valvoline Trans Tasman Challenge last month has had plenty of practice in his new Monaro after the 10strong kiwi team beat the Australians. This was the first time the Challenge was run and after a successful series, Paddy says the drivers and organisers hope to bring the Australian team over for next year’s event. “There will be a meeting in January

where we will discuss organising to bring the Australians over and host the Challenge here. “So far we have no idea of dates, costs and tracks but I will definitely be pushing to have Eastern States Speedway included.� Paddy North pictured right.

Team push for Marlborough uniform By Damian George The Marlborough Under-13 mixed touch team are heading to Christchurch for the South Island Junior Provoncial Championships later this month and, while they have set their sights high, their first goal is to get a uniform. With the 14 squad members paying for all other costs of the trip out of their own pocket, the team has decided to fund-raise for team uniforms in order to reduce the burden on the players, coach Vanessa Campbell says. “We’re doing this so we all go down there in the proper gear,� she says. “At the moment, we don’t look like a

team.� She says the side will need to raise nearly $1400 to kit themsleves out in Marlborough colours and have put together grocery, seafood, $50, and ‘scratchy’ raffles to help them get there. “Our uniform order comes in on December 13 so we hope to sell the raffles within the next two weeks.� The side will play at least seven games during the tournament, which takes place on December 18 and 19, and hope to have some new silverware to go with their new kit. “We’re looking to take out the grade this year.�

New junior tennis comp begins By Damian George A new junior tennis league got underway at Marlborough Girls College on Wednesday night, under the direction of local coach and former New Zealand representative Michael Mooney. Seventeen players turned out on the opening night, with another eight competing on Thursday, in a competition designed to foster development of some of Marlborough’s best young tennis players. Many of them have been left without a club after their coach Michael Mooney became entangled in a legal dispute with the Marlborough Tennis Association, who have since banned him. As a result, he and others set up their own club known as The Wanderers. Mooney initially planned to stage the tournament at the Marlborough Tennis Club, but moved to Marlborough Girls College after his request to hire courts was rejected.
