Karen Gibb from Paper Plus Blenheim shows one of the first copies of Woman’s Day magazine with Dan Carter and Honor Dillion’s wedding. It has been reported that the Carters received $50,000 from Woman’s Day for the exclusive wedding photos held at Lake Timara Lodge. Karen thought Honor looked absolutely gorgeous and beautiful and Dan wasn’t too bad either. “Honor’s wedding dress looked better than Kate Middleton’s,” says Karen.

Dan Carter and local born Honor Dillon wed The wedding ceremony between All Black Dan Carter and Marlborough born Honor Dillon was reported as being an intimate and family orientated affair with around 180 guests. Because security was tight and local businesses which were involved in the wedding preparations stayed tight lipped leading up to Friday’s nuptials, the public was still able to enjoy their All Black sightings throughout the weekend. Amidst the excitement, others like local businessman Rhys Ransby have up until now remained secretive about the part they

the wedding vehicles on behalf of the groom. Pictured, the black Range Rover Sports V8 and an additional Range

Rover Sports supercharged V8 were collected, groomed inside and out and returned to the groom last Friday ahead of the couple’s nuptials at Lake Timara Lodge. “Admittedly I’m not a huge rugby fan but it was a bit exciting as it was the first time I had done work for a high profile celebrity,” Rhys laughed. “We were under strict instruction not to reveal any information but I had the odd person come past and joke that the cars must have been for the Carter-Dillon wedding, as one of the number plates was RWC-159,” he said.

THREE CHEERS: Eight Marlborough secondary students were presented with Marlborough Lines 2011 Tertiary Study Awards on Friday. Thrilled and looking forward to their tertiary studies next year are Amber Woolf, Hannah Askin, Alora Johnson, Aidan Gibson, Alison Faulls, Paul Dey and (front) Nick Blankendaal and Matthew Curnow.

Another feather in their academic caps Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The proud parents of eight high achieving secondary students watched on as their children accepted Study Awards at a special ceremony on Friday at the Heartland Hotel in Blenheim. One parent, Nick Blankendaal told the Sun he was very “proud” of his son Nick’s achievement. “He has worked hard and done very well, we are so proud of him,” he said. The Study Awards were presented by Marlborough Lines

Chairman David Dew, who told the students he hoped they would one day return to Marlborough with their qualifications. “I also look forward to hearing from those attending Victoria University next year where I studied myself,” he said during the ceremony. The Study Awards have been presented annually since 1991, with $18,500 having been given out to approximately 188 students since its establishment. This year’s recipients are going on to study a diverse range

of subjects throughout New Zealand. For two Marlborough Boys’ College students Matthew Curnow and Paul Dey, this award was just another feather in their academic caps after they were jointly named dux earlier this year. “I have been ready to move out and get into studies for a year now,” Matthew joked. “Receiving this award means it will take the pressure off me finding work while I’m studying.”

David Shearer has won the battle for the Labour Party leadership. Shearer beat David Cunliffe after a close vote by party MP’s on Tuesday. Shearer will have Grant Robertson as his deputy, both relatively inexperienced politians, only in their second term. Shearer is a former United Nations high-flyer who replaced Helen Clark when she retired from politics in the Mt Albert electorate.

Sun Christmas Appeal inundated with gifts The Sun Newspaper’s annual Christmas Appeal has sparked a lot of support from the Marlborough community with gifts of all shapes and sizes pouring through the doors. The gifts will be donated to the local Open Home Foundation which works in the care and protection of families and children at risk, including foster, respite and long term care of these children. Local businesses and their staff have also been encouraged to put together gift donations in the lead up to Christmas. There are only five days left for people to get their gift donations into the Sun office on High Street, Blenheim in time for the December 19 cut-off. Support the Sun and the Open Home Foundation, your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Devine out Arthur Devine has cancelled his lease with William Yates and will not be re-opening at 62 High St, says Devine lawyers Radich Law. He will be looking for new premises elsewhere in Blenheim. Yates lawyers have lodged a ‘Notice of Appeal’, which seeks to bring Arthur’s occupancy to an end, a decision which could take months to get a hearing says Radich Law. This makes it very difficult for our client Devine to continue trading. William Yates disputes this and says the court has already upheld the original five year lease in Devine’s favour, they (Radich Law) are saying the judge might overturn this. An electrician was seen by The Sun on

Tuesday morning removing the ceiling lighting and last Friday staff from Arthur Devine Hairdressers removed furniture. This is after his landlord Mr Yates was told by the courts to reinstate Arthur’s salon. (Although Mr Devine himself removed the furniture). Mr Devine has had an on going legal battle with his landlord William Yates after being wrongly evicted for not paying his rent on time. Mr Yates’ former lawyers (Hardy-Jones Clark) wrongly told Mr Yates that a rent payment had not been made when in fact it had been made on the last day. Hardy Jones Clark then made a $20,000 payment to Mr Devine six days later, presumably for the mistake.

Story by Celeste Lodewyk The Renwick School’s Board of Trustees has chosen to await the Marlborough District Council’s decision on the future of the Renwick Memorial Community Hall’s committee, regardless of recent requests to settle the matter independently. Hall committee RSA representative Ian Blue has attempted at calling two meetings recently with the intention of reforming the committee according to the hall’s Deed of Constitution. He also claims that the Council withdrew its membership from the committee in 1997 which was later verified in 2006, losing all authority in any decision making. Council and school committee representatives chose not to attend both meetings. Mayor Alistair Sowman responded to Mr Blue’s claim by stating it was untrue and that the Council had not pulled out. “This is Mr Blue’s opinion and I don’t believe this is correct. The Council has not pulled out and it is not for the RSA to call any meetings.

“They need to be patient and wait for the outcome as we are getting close to making a decision. “We are working with the Ministry of Education to have the trustee updated and then there will be an election for the community representative,” Mr Sowman said. BOT chairman Brian Roughan told the Sun they wanted to have an agreed process with the council as they do not want to be open for legal challenges, and will not be attending any meetings until this process is in place. “It would be remiss of the BOT to be party to an illegally formed committee and to decisions made by such a committee,” Mr Roughan said. According to Mr Blue, the RSA was disappointed by the BOT and Council’s refusal to attend the meetings. “After both parties saying they wanted the committee legally reformed, it frustrates us that they declined to come to our meetings. “We all want the same thing, to have the committee up and running,” Mr Blue said.

Proposed Pocket Park upsets retailers More than fifty business people and public attended a meeting at the council on Monday night to discuss the Queen St Pocket Park. Cr Sloan explained the CBD Streetscape Design Brief dated April 2011, was only a concept plan at this stage. Cr Sloan then discussed a submission proposed by GM & CY Haymes, who are part owners and tenants of the building which adjoins the Queen St carpark. In their submission Haymes said they had concerns at the process that council has adopted. In 2009 a concept plan was prepared by Urbanism Plus, and put out to the public for comment. The 2009 plan had part of Queen St carpark as a pocket park on the eastern side of the existing carpark, with the remaining land being retained for car parking. Now the new 2010 Streetscape plan which council had not consulted with the public had taken away 50 carparks, and then approved funding for the construction of the 2010 plan Haymes says. The loss of carparks would impact significantly on existing businesses, including UFS Chemist and Roselands Pets who rely on short term parking he says. Bruno Dalliessi voiced his concerns

saying this is the first opportunity for the public to speak against the loss of carparks, and seems stupid and a complete waste of money ($600K to $1m for the Pocket Park) and at a time when retailers are hurting he says. Cheryl Greer, questioned Cr Sloan as to why the immediate retailers weren’t canvassed before the 2011 report. Cr Sloan replied it was only a brief. Craig Pocock one of the designers said the brief was started to give council an idea of costs. Marcel Rood from Raupo said the town is boring. “We need to lose a couple of carparks and provide open spaces”. UFS manager Chris Furness said the immediate retailers will be affected with the loss of carparks, the council need to weigh up the cost of customers needs. Nine out of ten of our local customers park in Queens St carpark. For UFS this is not a good move , “this will kill us” he says. John Gale owner Roselands says if the Pocket Park goes ahead we could move out of the CBD, we need customers to park at our door. Cr Sloan said he would take the meetings comments back to council and the council would consult the public again in January.

Radio man An interest in family history has led Blenheim man Bill Marsh to build up a big collection of his father’s valve radios, and now it is leadng him to split the collection up. He says he and his father had a shared interest in long distance radio. Mr Marsh senior was a respected member of the NZ DX League, whose members listened to stations around the world, competing to get the signals of the most distant stations. “You would listen to a station, record its programme, and then send it to the station. They would confirm it with their programme directors and send you a letter or card to confirm you had picked up their signal. Dad had one from South Africa, the furthest.” Mr Marsh is a geneologist, who has traced his family history. The valve radio collection is part of that

family history, and in order to maintain the family’s heritage, he promised his sisters their father’s radios. Each of his two sisters will get one of the radios built by their father to pass down their family lines, and Mr Marsh intends to restore his father’s first valve radio to fully operational next year.

Others, such as the large black radio, are special to him, as it was the one kept in the family kitchen while he was growing up. “It’s a bit dented now from where it was taken around the country on our holidays.” The valve radios, mostly dating from the 1930s, are of American origin, except for the two Mr Marsh senior built himself.

Local Marlborough Girls’ College student and aspiring musician, Clara van Wel will open The Classic Hits Winery Tour’s Blenheim show in February next year after being spotted by the promoter’s office as promising young talent. 14 year old Clara has secured a 20 minute opening slot before the first act takes the stage at Villa Maria Estate on Thursday 23 February. The full line up includes headliner Gin Wigmore, The Mutton Birds and Avalanche City. Helen Eccles, from Auckland based Civic Events (annual Winery Tour & Acoustic Church Tour promoters) was so impressed with Clara she invited her to join the line up: “I listened to Clara’s CD and then saw her clips on You Tube, she is clearly talented and has such a lot of confidence for someone of her age.

It didn’t take much to convince me she should have a chance to perform at the show. “We don’t normally add an opening act, and we won’t be doing this at any other shows....but Clara is special. “ Clara’s thrilled with the opportunity to perform to such a large audience: “This is an amazing opportunity and I’m so excited to be part of such a huge NZ event. I’ve always loved going to the Villa Maria Concert and I can’t believe I’ll be playing at it this time!” No stranger to the stage, Clara has already has a string of awards to her name including Marlborough Stars In Your Eyes competition and the Marlborough’s Got Talent show. She was also named among the top-20 finalists in the annual Smokefreerockquest competition this year, which attracted more than 800 entries.

Blenheim Toyota Every now and again there is a car produced that becomes significant and iconic. As we have now reached the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the AA thought it appropriate to honour the vehicle that has been significant in NZ throughout that time. The Car of the Decade Award has been introduced to recognise long standing excellence. To be eligible for this award a

vehicle must have been in the market for the past ten years and made a significant impact in the NZ Motoring scene within the past decade. All vehicles and technologies available in the market were considered for this award. The criteria for this award included:

• Sales volume • Safety • Reliability • Environment

The New Zealand public have voted with their wallets, based on market analysis the dominance in sales volume of our finalists was compelling. The overall car of the decade is a true testament to a vehicle that has stood the test of time.

The winner is the Toyota Corolla.

Zirka Circus set to amaze

inbrief

The Sun

Prepare yourself for a visual extravaganza for the Zirka Circus is coming to town from December 15 to 18. Being held at the A&P Showgrounds in Blenheim, there will be a myriad of new international acts that have never before been seen in New Zealand. Organisers say the audience will be ‘wowed and amazed’ by the acts they have dubbed as scarier and more beautiful than ever. “Other circuses boast of having the globe of death act, but that is nothing compared to our three storey high monster globe with more riders and more death defying tricks than ever. “And of course our crazy clowns are back, along with many other new and exciting acts, organisers say. This is what The Whakatane Beacon had to say in their review. “Zirka Circus, which has just completed a sevenperformance visit to Whakatane is cast in the mould of the newfangled Cirque de Soleil, which combines acrobatics with street performance … and in this case a distinct influence of the wuxia-influenced films (and the Olympic Games opening ceremony) directed by Zhang Yimou.” “And the finale – the “globe of death” – was

Christmas spending slow

record majority for king

Christmas hasn’t loosened the pursestrings in Marlborough yet, with electronic transactions in November only slightly up on last year. Figures released by Paymark show that while the build up to Christmas has begun, spending during the month could best be described as a slight intermission breaking up the busy Rugby World Cup period and the pending Christmas rush.

Kaikoura National Party sitting candidate Colin King has increased his election night majority, after special votes were finalised. Picking up a further 1470 votes King’s record majority is 11,445 over Labour candidate Liz Collyns on 8516.

Paymark, which processes around 75 per cent of all electronic transactions in New Zealand, processed 82,000 electronic transactions in Marlborough in November, up from 81,000 last year, a rise of 1.2 per cent. That was worth $43.2million, up 1.6 per cent from $42.5 million for the previous year. Paymark spokesman, Phil Deason, says that over the past year or so Kiwis have kept a close

watch on their outgoings and this appears to still be the case. “The pre-Christmas spend up typically begins mid-November and it has nationally with spending in the last seven days of November up 9.3 per cent as compared to the first seven days of the month. However, the annual increase in value is slightly below the trend of recent months,” says Deason.

Chorus sounds victory call Members of the Marlborough Sounds Barbershop Chorus ventured down under to compete at the 2011 National & Pan Pacific competitions in Brisbane, Australia from September 28 to October 2. The field held stiff competition with 26 choruses and 42 quartets each singing their hearts out for the top awards, but Marlborough managed to shine ahead of most with a silver in the NZ National Small Chorus and 5th out of 13 in the Pan Pacific Small Chorus competitions. Both local quartets ‘Euphoria’ and ‘WWW.Doc’ made it to the finals with ‘WWW.Doc achieving bronze in the NZ Seniors Quartet Finals.

Best of all, Marlborough and Auckland’s ‘City of Sails Chorus’ were jointly awarded the NZ Most Improved Chorus Award. Members are thrilled with their amassed medal haul, now with a total of seven golds and two silver NZ medals, and one Pan Pacific gold medal, says spokesperson for the Marlborough Sounds Barbershop Chorus Hugh Robbie. “With members of the chorus aged from 55 to 80 competing in open competition against singers as young as college age, achieving success has over many years earned respect and admiration from barbershop members all over New Zealand,” he says. Where to from here?

yolks into chocolate until glossy. Beat the cream until very thick, stir one spoon full of cream into the chocolate mixture until well combined and the chocolate is loose. Then add the rest of the cream bit by bit. Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form, slowly add the sugar until glossy and stiff. Fold half the egg whites into chocolate mixture until combined, repeat with the rest of the egg whites. Separate into six containers and chill over night if possible. Serve with fresh berries a drop of whipped cream and shaved chocolate. For a variation you can add a drop of your favorite liqueur to the melted chocolate, or substitute the dark chocolate for white.

Knitting for premature babies Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Baby Indiana Rose was born three weeks prematurely at Wairau Hospital last month, and thanks to a group of charitable knitters, babies like Indiana will receive a blanket and hand knitted garments. Carol Crouch and Thelma Halliday donated two large boxes of singlets, hats, booties, blankets and little jackets to the maternity ward recently as part of a project called ‘Knitting for Premature Babies’. The national project has been supported by the Freemasons Charity by compiling a library of knitting patterns for the many volunteers who knit for the project. The project was set up by Jan Cooper, the wife of the Grand Master of New Zealand Freemasons. “The idea is to provide knitted garments to the 6000 to 8000 premature babies born each year and the wives and widows of Freemasons knit the garments”, Carol says. Carol and Thelma’s husbands are both previous district grand masters for the Freemasons in Nelson and Marlborough.

Sun readers have their say... Q: What do you think of our jail system and what is your idea of punishment?

Peter Scott Blenheim

Paige Gropp Blenheim

Kirstie Hollis Blenheim

Bruce Earnshaw Blenheim

Bell Anderson Blenheim

Ted Atkins Blenheim

Having jails that put bad people with other bad people for a period of time doesn’t work. There needs to be something that rehabilitates them.

Having TVs and being comfortable is crap, it is supposed to be punishment! You don’t deserve to have fun.

I think harsher punishment is necessary. If you do the crime, you deserve to do the time.

Serious offenders are sentenced for 12 years, so they should stay for 12 years! Why do they deserve parole? It doesn’t make sense to get out earlier.

I think they should throw away the key! They are too lenient on them.

I don’t think the punishment is severe enough as the crimes keep happening. We seem to have all the laws in place, but we lack the bite and action.

Dear Ed, Each Wednesday is a ‘magic’ day for me. Rain or fine. That is the day I get my Sun. I recall that Sun Song of a millenium ago, in the days of the Hot Sun, gorse pods a popping, salt water swimming, and fun. My catchy tune that lingers went, I think, thus“Let the Sun shine in Greet it with a grin Open up your heart And the let the sun shine in.”

Well, my Sun comes on a personal delivery. Each afternoon I get a knock on the door. It’s the Sun Girl. She’s vivacious, cheery, and always happy. She shoulders a canvas bag, and my paper is placed in my hand. A bit of cheery news, a “and how’s your puppy?” and my visitor is off to the next stop. And I feel “Good!”. Ka tangi te ruru. Old Timer

Scrooge is back for Christmas Dear Ed, It’s nice to see Val Alcorn put all that time and effort and at her own expense put up all of those (over 38,000 at her last count) to bring cheer to people over this holiday period, and on the same page have Mr Trapp say that Marlborough Lines won’t put up their Christmas tree and lights because it will cost too much.

He says that probably the world has moved on, and it has moved on for him. I personally think that he needs the ghost of Christmas to bring him back and be like Val and get in the spirit of the season, but then again I suppose you must have one Scrooge in every Christmas tale. Glow Bug

Tennis charges dropped Dear Ed, Twice I’ve been arrested and twice now the charges have been withdrawn or dismissed on the police’s legal advice. Under the deed the public on the basis of good behaviour and or a reasonable fee have access to watch and book courts to play tennis. The faclilty is a public facility open to everyone for 325 days of the year. If the club is foolish and refuse to mediate and not lift an invalid illegal ban then there will be no alternative but to file a civil suit. Not only is this club breaching my public right it is breaking my (and everyone’s) human rights. If the council choose to uphold such

behaviour then they are equally guilty of breaching their own lease conditions. The club and association have always talked about competition and fairness, surely there is room for equal treatment. I will be back down at the club to watch and support my kids. If the police are called I question whether this is a good use of public money and time. 1. Under my contract the club denied me the right to two courts. 2. The club contrary to public access conditions is constantly locked. 3. Juniors are regularly discriminated against being shut out of play and competition due to age and not merit. Michael Mooney

Good medicine While believing the South Island is the best place in the world, and having a thriving GP practice in Redwoodtown, Jim Vause has also developed an international medical career. He talks to Cathie Bell about his work, the importance of IT, and why it’s so hard to find a doctor these days.

Redwoodtown GP Jim Vause decided while still studying medicine at Otago University that the South Island was the best part of the world and that he would be a rural GP. “As a rural GP, you have an ability to be a person who relates to people, not diseases.” Initially starting up in Central Otago, Dr Vause and his wife Ruth moved to Blenheim after having their children. “We came here and set up a practice in Redwoodtown. We put up the shingle, said we’re here, and got two patients the first day. It’s grown since then.” Doing a masters in general practice led him to get involved in research for the College of GPs – the professional organisation that looks after standards and education for GPs. “That degree set me down the path of more work and the presidency.” Now, he is on the executive of the New Zealand College of GPs, and works through the world organization of GPs with other countries, chairing the NZ Guidelines

Group which assesses new drugs, as well employees or contractors. And that’s what as a role advising the Ministry of Health on makes it hard for people to find doctors…. medical screening programmes for diseases It’s not that they’re not out there, or they’re and on good IT systems for medicine – all not being trained, they are, but they don’t areas of personal interest. want to go into business in a practice. “I spend half my time here, and at least one “It’s not a good business. says changes are happening. Working internationally gives him a strong belief in New Zealand’s place in the world. “We’re a very small country at the end of the world… but we have a strong place in the world. We are a bit player in some things, but make a really important contribution that I’m really proud of.” He highlights the “cornerstone system” set up by the College of GPs, aimed at consistency of procedures across practices. New Zealand set up the programme after Australia, and our system was chosen by Canada to implement for themselves. “It’s a very pleasing thing to see – we can have international collaboration that shares learning. I enjoy that. We’re making an improvement in New Zealand and Ontario.” All his work nationally and internationally has benefits for his own practice in Redwoodtown, Dr Vause says. “You’ve got to walk the talk. We’re doing a pilot of the latest iteration of quality standards.”

Ian Foster and Mary Rix-Miller from Hedgerow are happy with this year’s berry season.

Duller weather has slowed down strawberry ripening, but made the berries sweeter, Hedgerow Strawberries owner Mary RixMiller says. She said the berry season was going well. “We have had a particularly good season this year. We are trialling a new system, doubleplanting our plants, and it was worked really well. We’ve got big production.” Hedgerow were also selling value-added strawberry products

this year at their shop, including a local strawberry balsamic vinegar and an innovative strawberry fudge. “The strawberry balsamic vinegar is a South Island-produced item – it’s our strawberries, Taylor Pass manuka honey from the Honey Company, and the vinegar from a Canterbury firm.” Ms Rix-Miller said the strawberry fudge was a unique product. “Usually it is too hard to put whole berries into the fudge – they are too wet for the fudge to

set. We are freeze-drying them, the moisture is taken out. We put them in the fudge, and they rehydrate enough to become plump and tasty. It’s really special.” Hedgerow are also producing jam and strawberry shortcake. She said the season for Hedgerow was likely to run till the end of January, with pick-your-own available. However, because the plants are grown hydroponically, children need to be 12 years old to pick their own.

Queen Charlotte student wins aquaculture scholarship Brook Lines is the inaugural winner of the Queen Charlotte College Aquaculture Academy New Zealand King Salmon Scholarship. The scholarship is worth $11,500 over two years and will fund Brook’s tuition and course fees to complete a diploma in Aquaculture at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Queen Charlotte College assistant principal Betty Whyte says that year 12 student Brook was thinking about going to work but with this scholarship he has an amazing opportunity to continue his aquaculture education. She said he had a good academic record and was very familiar with the industry. “Brook has had work experience out on the mussel boats and he is a very outdoors sort of a person, keen on hunting

and fishing – he lives at Anakiwa on Queen Charlotte Sound. “He had also previously won a scholarship to South Australia where he spent two weeks visiting tuna, mussel, kingfish and oys t e r fa r m s which confirmed his aquaculture Brook Lines ambitions.” New Zealand King Salmon CEO Grant Rosewarne says Brook has demonstrated tremendous commitment to learning about aquaculture and making it his life’s work. “We and QCC have a shared objective in nurturing up and

com ing talent a nd we believe this scholarship enhances Brook’s employment opportunities. We are looking forward to welcoming him to the industry on his graduation.” The New Zealand King Salmon S c h ol a r s h ip i s awarded to a year 12 or 13 Aquaculture Academy student at QCC selected by college staff and approved by principal Tom Parsons. The recipient is a student who has shown enthusiasm and diligence during the school year as well as attitude and commitment to a career in aquaculture or marine science.

Zuppas pizzas a treat Last Friday night the Sun was invited to sample some of Zuppas new pizza additions which will be on their menu Thursday and Friday nights. Of the many mouthwatering options we chose BBQ Chicken and Bacon and the Margarita. Anticipating some ‘petite’ gourmet pizza rounds baked on the traditional thick crust, we were pleasantly surprised to receive large, thin crusted pizzas. The first smells to hit were the fresh basil and homemade tomato sauce, followed

by the tangy wafts of BBQ sauce and chunky bacon. The bases were crispy and we enjoyed the big flavours which were further enhanced by the free wine tasting, 2008 Montepulciano provided by Framingham Wines. Two pizzas eas-

ily filled three people and the fact that they were made with locally produced and sourced ingredients makes them all more appealing. To the ‘pizza boys’, Dion Brown and Jason Kennard - thank you and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Drivers are asked to take particular notice of cyclists using the new cycle lanes in Seymour Street and Maxwell Road. The cycle lanes are marked clearly in green paint and have been designed with the high density traffic use of these streets in mind. CBD Councillor Terry Sloan says the lanes should help make it much safer for cyclists to cross town. “Other towns and cities have designated cycle lanes and they work very well, but all drivers need to remember the rules,” he says. • Drivers should not be using the cycle lane. • Drivers should check for cyclists remembering their blind spot when

making a turn or before crossing a cycle lane. • Drivers using the parking spaces next to the cycle lanes should take particular care when opening their car doors. Police are looking out for drivers who fail to give way to cyclists at intersections or cut them off at corners, and those who fail to indicate correctly when turning or when using a roundabout. At the same time, cyclists will need to take particular care until Blenheim drivers become accustomed to the new lanes. “It’s all about learning to share the road and that means courtesy on each side,” said Councillor Sloan.

PREMIUM House Paint Gloss Exterior 15 Year Guarantee

Students paint out their lives on poles Year 6 and 7 pupils in Riverlands School’s Room 8 have painted out their lives on poles, in a similar way to carved totem poles made by American Indians, as part of a long-running art project. Teacher Jane Tibble, who takes the children for art classes once a fortnight, said the project had begun in term 2 and was only finishing now, at the end of Term 4. “The children have thought a lot about themselves, their families, and what they do. They have made that information into

symbols and painted them on their poles. It’s been a process, all about them. I think they have learnt a lot about themselves.” She said the children had put a lot of themselves into the project. Originally, the plan was for finished posts to be put in the school’s garden, but most children now planned to take them home as presents for their parents. The poles are fencing posts donated by a local farmer and the paint was donated by Resene.

Blenheim’s Ralph Gillespie gets taken to the wall by Regan Anisy of Greymouth in a near roll over, both of which survived to finish the race. Photo by Blair Hall.

By Darrell Bate Blenheims Ralph “Chopper” Gillespie was happy with his weekend’s efforts on the dirt oval at Greymouths Greenstone Park Raceway after winning a second overall place in the 2011 South Island Stockcar Championship. Gillespie joined other local drivers Brent Goulding, Sam Thompson, Ricco Gray, Gavin Marshall and Steve Biddulph along with 36 other hopefuls competing for the title over two days of racing. Although Ralph finished only a few

points shy of event winner, Cleve Kokshoorn his trip there was not an easy one with a near rollover along with a few other mobile obstacles along the way. Greymouth racer Kokshoon on his home track was unstoppable and performed well enough in all three heats to secure the top spot. Having just purchased a later model car, Gillespie is rapt with how he has adapted to its different characteristics. “It is a totally different car in many ways to my previous one but I’m really happy with how quickly it is coming together. I would have really liked to win the event

but am glad with the outcome,” he says. Gavin Marshall is also enjoying his efforts finishing 5th as is Goulding in 8th spot, Thompson and Gray 11th and 12th respectively. Biddulph was not so fortunate, unable to collect points due to not finishing the rounds. “It was great to see all the Blenheim Boys qualify into the final 26 for Saturday night,” commented Marshall. After such a strong and positive outcome by the Blenheim squad, they all are holding high hopes when in January they head to Palmerston North in search of a victory at the prestigious NZ Stockcar Teams Title.

Young members excel with birds Willy and Jessie Dredge pictured left, were winners of this years Stewart Island cup for the longest pigeon race. Blenheim Flying Pigeon Club president Don Morrison is also pictured. Another young member, Sindy Kirkwood won the Club’s points trophy. She did well in all the races over the year to win this trophy.

Jenna aims for London stage

Book commemorates kindergarten

Involved in the design and publication of Redwoodtown Kindergarten’s fundraising recipe book – Worth the Wait, are from left Phil Smart, Jody Percy, Jolene Humphreys and Michelle Jobanobic.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough Girls’ College year 13 student Jenna Kelly thought she already had an exciting year planned for 2012, but after being selected to perform at the Globe Theatre in London she has plenty more to look forward to. Jenna was one of 48 students selected to attend the National Shakespeare School Production Week in October, and from that she made the top 24 who will travel with the Young Shakespeare Company to London. She freely admits that it was a huge honour to be selected, but it also presented a financial challenge. Jenna had already planned to travel to the UK

to volunteer at a boarding school so all of her savings had gone toward her travel. Now in order to travel to the Globe Theatre Jenna must raise $6000. Aside from working “every available roster” she can at her Countdown supermarket job, Jenna has organised an Improv Night show for this Friday from 7:30pm to 9pm at the MGC hall. “Come and be entertained as Marlborough Boys and Girls’ College students take to the stage for improvised acts such as; Thank God You’re Here”, she says. Door sales are just $5 each, so support Jenna and enjoy the show.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk ‘Worth the Wait’; The name of Redwoodtown Kindergarten’s new recipe book and the general feeling described by those who contributed toward it. The idea of producing a recipe book illustrated with vibrant photographs depicting everyday life at the kindergarten, was a combined effort of parents, teachers and children. “We began talking about how we would commemorate the kindergarten’s 60th anniversary two years ago, and the idea for a recipe book came about. This is why we named the book Worth the Wait,” says Jolene Humphreys, one of the book’s layout artists. Priced at $25 each, the Worth the Wait

recipe book is also Redwoodtown Kindergarten’s major fundraiser for the year. More than 250 recipes were submitted and 75 of those made the final cut, in a project which has been ongoing since July this year. Already a number of the recipe books have made their way to South Africa, Sweden, the UK, Australia and America, and there are still plenty more available for sale. Some of the people involved with design and publication are Jolene, Phil and Debby Smart, Jody Percy, Michelle Osgood and Michelle Jobanobic who donated their time and expertise toward the book. Copies of Worth the Wait available at Redwoodtown Kindergarten, or order online at redwoodrecipes@inbox.com
