By Damian George Marlborough’s TerraVin Wines could well find itself on the menus of some of the world’s finest restaurants in the near future, after securing the sales services of a renowned wine professional. Jean-Marie Pratt, who worked as head-sommelier in Gordon Ramsay’s Chelsea restaurant for three years, has taken up a role which will see him responsible for promoting and selling TerraVin’s Pinot Noir worldwide. French-born Jean-Marie was in charge of all aspects of the beverage service at the celebrity chef’s five-star restaurant between 2007 and 2010, before deciding to

focus his attention on working in wineries. After spending three weeks visiting the wine regions of New Zealand earlier this year, it was the favourable wine-growing conditions in Marlborough which swayed him towards his new company. “I’ve worked in Australia, I’ve worked in South Africa and I knew what to expect from California, he says. “New Zealand caught my attention because of its cooler climate and it’s potential to make finer wines. “I was very happily surprised and impressed by some of the New Zealand wines and when I tasted a couple of TerraVin’s

wines, I thought ‘this guy’s making something special’. TerraVin Wines owner Mike Eaton says the pair struck an immediate accord when they met at a dinner in Wellington earlier this year. “We very quickly realised we had the same vision, he says. “We’re very happy to have

him come on and we’re hoping to use his connection with fine-dining restaurants around the world. “I think restaurants are also excited in that it will help them service their customers and create opportunities for them. Jean-Marie’s Londonbased role officially starts

on February 1, but already the wines are listed on Raffles Hotel in Singapore, and Sydney’s Tetsuya’s and Quay restaurants. Jean-Marie’s addition meant a double celebration for TerraVin, who opened their cellar door at the Brookby Road property a few weeks ago.

Locks fetch $2000 By Celeste Lodewyk Cheers echoed throughout the Redwoodtown Community Hall last Friday as four local women shaved off their locks for fundraising donations. Anne Bassett, Maria Zydenbos, Judy Newman and Char Morison right, shaved their heads in an effort to raise money for the Marlborough Dragon Boat Team, Simply the Breast. The team needs to replace their existing wooden boat with a new fiberglass model, estimated at $14,000. Simply the Breast chairperson, Coralie Holdaway said around 60 people attended the shave-off and donated

approximately $2000 on the day. “The public support was tremendous with cheering, positive comments and a lot of generosity shown through donations, it was wonderful. “Our whole team is delighted that these women are supporting us and by doing something as amazing as this is a wonderful tribute to the ladies in the team, she says. CHARITY: Char Morison smiles as she has her curls shaved off.

thing she says she has done for most of their anniversary milestones. “I have always loved making cakes for weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. Cake making along with gardening are my two greatest passions, she says. The couple first met at a church social gathering in Oamaru in their early 20’s, and after forming a strong friendship they became engaged. They married a year later and enjoyed one year together before Leslie went away for the war. After four-years of army service he returned and the couple went on to purchase a poultry farm in Hilderthorpe, which they owned for 12-years. Various jobs followed before Noeline and Leslie retired in the early 70’s and more recently moved to Blenheim seven-years ago to be closer to their son Owen and his family.

“There is no secret to a long and happy marriage, says Noeline Norrish as she gazes lovingly at her husband Leslie. “All it takes is patience, tolerance and real love for each other, adds Leslie. On December 28 Blenheim couple Noeline, 91-years and Leslie 96-years will be celebrating a very special milestone – their 70th wedding anniversary. Reflecting on their marriage, Noeline and Leslie say they often laugh at many of their memories and stories and look forward to more in the future. “It’s been an honour to get to our age and celebrate this milestone, we have had a wonderful marriage, they say. School leaves mark on Taylor River By Damian George Springlands School has again done their bit to help the Marlborough environment, setting up a ‘writer’s walk’ at Blenheim’s Taylor River designed to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the area. Mayor Allistair Sowman was on hand to officially unveil the first in what is hoped to be a long line of environmentally-focused poems to be placed along the river bank. The first, written by Springlands School student Fynn Sawyer, was fixed to a boulder donated by the Blenheim District Council. Springlands School recently won the participation award in the schools category of the

Marlborough Environment Awards for their ‘eco hut’. Mr Sowman extolled the efforts of the students and acknowledged the work the school does for the community. “I just want to congratulate you on what is another wonderful idea from your school, he says. “In years to come, when you walk down here, you will be able to say ‘I created that’. Springlands school teacher Cathee Wilks, who oversaw the project, says the idea came about after the class carried out tests on the lake’s water, and found it had suffered due to rubbish washing in through stormwater drains. “What we decided was that it

was a really important part of the Marlborough environment and people needed to start caring for it and looking after it. “The students’ vision is that we put the challenge out to other schools and each year we put another piece of environmental writing along the river bank. The poem was written on a granite plaque donated by Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors, who say they are happy to help out the school as it puts a lot back into the community. RIGHT: Springland’s School students Yazmin Shipley and Fynn Sawyer check the poem that Fynn wrote for the ‘writer’s walk’ plaque on the Taylor River.

The social network By Damian George A Blenheim woman hopes her new social networking initiative will make it easier for ‘over30’s’ to meet new people. Wendy Joy says she decided to create ‘Something Random’ - a weekly forum for single people to get to know each other - after seeing the success of a similar venture in Nelson. “The idea there was ‘you won’t meet your soul mate, but you will have fun, she says. “That’s what I want this to be like - the concept is to take it right away from the idea of dating. The weekly gatherings will be held at Fairweathers on Scott, who will provide a ‘DJ’, food platters, and a free drink for each person on their next visit. Ms Joy says the demand for an organised setting to facilitate social interaction among the age-group is evident in Blenheim. “I found myself chatting to quite a lot of single people and it always comes up - where do you go to meet new people? “This is a place you can come along to practice chatting to new people, find some new friends and celebrate being single. She says Fairweathers was the ideal location as it has a “discrete back entrance and the capacity to accommodate a large group of people if the idea took off. Ms Joy, who works at Repco and The Factory Shop but is also a qualified life coach, says people who are apprehensive about attending should not hesitate to contact her.

ACTION PLAN: Wendy Joy has set up a social network for Blenheim’s ‘over-30’s’.

“Some people might be interested in coming but might not want to walk through the door by themselves, so they are welcome to contact me and I can effectively pair people up. Something Random will hold its first meeting on January 30, and will take place on the last Sunday of each month thereafter. Interested in joining Something Random? Call Wendy on 579 5706 or email at something random@xtra.co.nz

Old Boys set up Foundation to assist College A new initiative to boost the quality of secondary education in Marlborough is to be established through a Foundation to provide support for academic, cultural and sporting needs. The new body, to be known as the Marlborough College Charitable Foundation, has come about after informal discussions amongst a cross-section of Marlborough people who believe that strongly performing secondary schools are essential for the region. The Foundation has been established by the Marlborough College Old Boys’ Association and is working with senior College staff and the Board to develop future plans. “We have been saddened to see this school struggling in recent times given the impor-

tance of Marlborough Boys’ College to our community, said Foundation member Lawrance Saunders who has invited interested people to a planning and information meeting this evening. “It’s clear that improvements are expected at the College and we have been heartened by the recent changes that have been made. But we think, as a community, we should share some of the burden of that expectation by actively support the rebuilding of the school spirit, said Mr Saunders. As a first step Mr Saunders wants to build stronger connections between the College and the community. “We know that we can find individuals and businesses within Marlborough willing to

assist the school with finance and expertise. At the same time we want to build up the links between the College and the community by creating an active and engaged organisation. We believe tangible support will go some way toward establishing a greater sense of security for the school as well as encouraging higher aspirations across a range of fields, he said. Marlborough Old Boys’ Association president Ferg Murray says it’s a terrific initiative which is strongly supported by the Old Boys’ Association. “During the planning for the college jubilee in 2000, we discovered to our horror that the Old Boys’ Association had barely $800 to its name so we began saving steadily. Now,

Blenheim man wins national award By Damian George Blenheim man Stuart Dudley has won the 2010 New Zealand horticulturalist of the year award following a two-day competition in Auckland. The viticulturalist for Oyster Bay Wine’s grower division was the only Marlborough representative at the awards, and beat eight competitors from around the country to take the title. “I’m over the moon, he says. “It’s surprising, you don’t know what to expect going over there. The judging of the contestants over the two days was extensive, and included interviews, presentations and practical tests. Stuart says the judging panel praised him for being well-rounded and holding a strong global view of the industry, not just of his own area of expertise. “It’s such a big industry, you can’t possibly know everything so you’ve just got to go in with a wide

with the next generation on board and their ambitious fundraising objectives, we’re really going to be able to make a difference, said Mr Murray. Mr Saunders says everyone agrees that more could be done to celebrate the many successes already achieved. Marlborough Boys’ College, for example, is currently the top performing New Zealand boys’ secondary school in rowing. We need to build on that reputation and ensure the boys get the resources they need to secure that national status, he said. “I would also like to see similar successes in other fields of endeavour at the College so that other people get to experience the immense pride which I have felt at the success of the school’s rowers, he said.

Good Coffee and Great Company “It’s been a dream come true,â€? says Fran Roche, owner of The Fix CafĂŠ in Blenheim. As Fran looks around her bustling cafĂŠ in Queens Market Mall, she reflects on the hard work and dedication which went into making her business the success it is today. Fran spent most of her life in Marlborough and a number of years cooking for local bars and restaurants. After searching for a “quiet little businessâ€?, Fran soon found The Fix CafĂŠ and purchased it seven and a half years ago. Fran began working the cafĂŠ alone serving around 30 cups of coffee per day. As time went on and customer numbers began climbing she took on more staff and expanded the kitchen area.

This opened up the lunch menu to incorporate a wider variety of bagels, toasted sandwiches, homemade baked slices and muffins, most made by staff member Coral. “Our philosophy is simple. To create fresh, simple food which is made to order and to really look after our customers; it’s what we are all about. “It’s been hard work but since I purchased the business, we have attracted a huge following with regular customers who come in every day for coffee and lunch, and who are now our friends, she smiles. The Fix serves L’Affare coffee which is brewed in Wellington, along with a delectable range of teas, smoothies, frappes.

Marj reaches 100 milestone Blenheim woman Marj O’Leary, who turned 100 this week, says she attributes her longevity to regular exercising and eating healthy home-cooked food. Mrs O’Leary celebrated the milestone with family and friends at Bethsaida Retirement Village yesterday, where she currently lives. Born in Claremont, Timaru, she studied nursing in Wanganui after school before making Blenheim home in her twenties. She says she is at a loss to explain why she has lived for so long, but pinpoints her upbringing as a contributing factor. “I suppose it’s inheritance. I come from a family that were well looked after, she says. “I enjoyed biking and walking and we ate healthy home-cooked food. That active lifestyle has carried well into her old age - she walked every day until the age of 86, and stopped driving only eight years ago at the age of 92. As for reaching the century, Mrs O’Leary is taking it all in her stride. “I don’t feel any different.

A helping gift The journey toward becoming a spiritual healer began after leaving the US Marine Corps for Canadian born Robert Middaugh. Robert who now resides in Marlborough with his New Zealand partner says using his “gift to help people is something very special. “The most lifting experience for me was when I worked on a gentleman who had cancer and was struggling with the side effects of chemotherapy. He was weak when I met him but after seven treatments with me in one month he regained some weight and hair. “This proved to me that if you expect nothing and pray for everything, that is when you get your true miracles, he smiles. Spiritual healing is when spirit intervenes, identifying any illness or injury as a symptom of life imbalance, he says. Robert says he was young when he first discovered his gift. Not only does Robert specialise in healing, but he can also do “readings, clearings and anything spiritual, he says.

What’s in a name? A brief history: Robalan Place With Mark Stevenson First National

Greed and neglect Robalan Place is not named after a noted citizen but an equine superstar, described as “charismatic “big and powerful, “a freelegged pacing phenomenon with astonishing speed. He was bought by Peter ‘Bluey’ Hope of Blenheim and trainer Denis Nyhan of Templeton after a shaky start in the Deep South. Nyhan was reported to have a no-nonsense attitude to the horse he (affectionately) later described as a “dirty, low, mongrel. He’s always been a cow of a thing. He would jump anything and hated workcarts, severely damaging several. He was also very difficult to catch, though Denis’s wife Denise was able to manage it. Born in 1966 he was five before he shaped up, winning five major races. At six he won six. His tally by this stage included the Ashburton Flying Stakes, the NZ Free-For-All, the Wellington Cup, a heat of the Easter Cup and a heat of the 1974 InterDominions in Sydney. At seven, he won a record twelve races, six of them consecutive. The NZ Free-For-All and the Miracle Mile, as well as the National Flying Pace were just three. He took two Wellington Cups and the NZ Cup and created a world record in the NZ Free-ForAll. His career peak was as a seven and eightyear-old. After his retirement the public favourite was spared being shot but in May 1986, at 29 and with arthritis, he was put down. He was buried on Nyhan’s Templeton property. Proudly sponsored by...

Dear Ed, Trustpower is squealing like a stuck pig over your excellent articles on power prices. Trustpower is only interested in profits at the expense of consumers and our environment. Drive over the Branch River on the West Coast highway and see the trickle where Trustpower has neglectfully ignored the river. Who is meant to monitor the residual flow meant to be going down the Branch? The dry river bed is mute evidence of Trustpower’s greed and neglect for the environment. Consumers should know what to do. Switch! Megga Watt

Happy Xmas NZ Post Dear Ed I sent a package to a Christchurch shop which unknown to me had closed their Post Office box. Back came the package to me “PO Box closed. Well! Well! Well! Wouldn’t you think NZ Post would have a smidgen of initiative to look up the street address and redirect it instead of sending it back here to be posted again? Happy Christmas NZ Post! Shelby Wright

Not a bludger Dear Ed, With regards to your article “Health Board Welcomes Complaints In late June -10, I parked my car in the only available space, this space proved to be very narrow. I did myself serious injury to my foot and legs trying to get my jammed foot on the ground. This was in the Hospital grounds I managed to get home but the next day my foot and leg were badly swollen, I was very immobile and grounded and had four bad falls, so I phoned the Hospital physio. Susan was very helpful and arranged a walker for me, visited me twice and also arranged an ACC form. The only way I could sleep, for the extreme pain, was in an armchair for three months, being also grounded for this time. I received a phone call, very rudely implying that I was an ACC bludger and I would get no help from them. In this time I phoned the Health Board complaints person, adding in also about no handrail at the Nurses Hall steps (Physio had made me have a hand rail at my back door steps) I received a letter from the Health Board stating “find yourself a wider car park and NOTHING has been done. I am still not fully recovered from the accident. K.O.Lawrence

1) Drink plenty of water. It is very important to drink water. Your body needs water to prevent dehydration during warm summer days. Take special care to make sure infants and toddlers drink enough water. They can become dehydrated much more easily than adults. 2) If you have asthma or other respiratory problems, keep a careful watch on the daily air quality reports. Also, don’t forget to take

your inhaler or other medication with you when you go out. 3) Take a rest or nap. Don’t push yourself beyond your physical limits. 4) Wear Sunscreen. Sunburn is painful and unhealthy. Use a sunscreen that is right for your skin. 5) Stay Cool. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing to help you stay cooler. 6) Wear Sunglasses. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays.

7) Maintain your energy level by limiting your intake of fat and sugar; focus on carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables. 8) Before leaving for vacation pack a few items (calamine lotion, baking soda) that will help with itchy or painful insect bites. 9) If you have allergies and plan to be travelling away, find out which plants will be pollinating in your vacation spot.

Come to Church

this Christmas

Christmas is for giving Christmas is a joyous time of year where families come together, homes are beautifully dressed in lights and decorations and a magnificent feast is prepared. For some people Christmas can also be a stressful time with some feeling overwhelmed by the need to buy gifts for friends and family. To save money and avoid the shopping burden, the message of giving can be translated many different ways.

"LENHEIM -ETHODIST 0ARISH ¶:KHUH &KXUFK &RPPXQLW\ 0HHW·

A basket of home baked goodies, handmade gift cards and crafts are just some of the things which can make special Christmas gifts while – at the same time can hearten children by sharing with them the joy and gift of giving. When shopping, encourage children to choose a tin of food for donation, paint a colourful picture for a nursing home or make some cookies and give them to someone less fortunate and brighten their day. Merry Christmas!

Drunk minors concern police Police are reminding parents to keep a close eye on their children over the holiday period after two young boys were found heavily intoxicated in central Blenheim. Constable Martin McDonald says it unclear why the boys, aged 11 and 13, were unattended and drunk early on Wednesday morning.

“I don’t know why they were out or if the parents knew or if they had just snuck out, he says. “It is very concerning to find such young boys wandering around town influenced by alcohol. Police took the children back to their parents and will be advising Child Youth and Family of the incident.

Drink-driver crashes into ditch A 40-year-old woman has been arrested for drink-driving after she crashed her car into a ditch on Friday night. Police say the woman was driving at a low speed when she lost control

Titans beaten but not out By Celeste Lodewyk It took more than hard hits, drivers being rolled and cars catching on fire to suppress the Eastern States Titans as they battled fiercely for the New Zealand Stock Car Teams Championship earlier this month in Wellington. Unfortunately for the team they did not win a podium placing but according to the Titans team captain Ricco Gray, they “put up a good fight. The teams championship was held in Wellington on December 10, 11 and 12 and featured nine of the country’s best stock car teams including the Palmerston North Pumas who went on to win the championship. Charity walkers stride on By Damian George Two university students completing an epic on-foot trek from Bluff to Cape Reinga reached Blenheim on Thursday, just in time to put their feet up for the weekend. Otago University students Kate Medlicott and Tim Geaney began their journey to raise awareness of child prostitution and child pornography in New Zealand on November 15, and are scheduled to reach the finish line on February 4. While most university students will likely be enjoying the summer break lying on the beach or around the barbecue with beer in hand, Kate says the pair felt their time could be better spent. “We wanted to do something worthwhile for our summer and wanted to do it on quite an extreme level, she says. “We want to let people know that it happens in New Zealand and it’s a pretty big issue. As of Friday, they had raised $2500 for the cause and, while that may not be on track to reach their lofty initial target of $30,000, it is still a sizeable contribution. “It was kind of hard to know what

Winners The five lucky winners of the ELF Supercup Colouring Competition all received family passes to last Friday’s Eastern States Speedway event, food and drink vouchers for the meeting, hats, posters.
