New Year
Celebrations set for Blenheim and Picton The sky above Picton will be lit up by not only the Ignite Marlborough firework celebrations, but also by the smiles of those who will be at the Foreshore to welcome in the year 2012 this Saturday night. Go Marlborough, with the support of major sponsors Interislander, Port Marlborough and the Marlborough District Council has
organised two New Year celebrations in both Picton and Blenheim. Despite Picton having the fireworks display again this year, Blenheim will still play host to its own celebration which is set to take place at The Forum. Celebrations in Picton begin on the Foreshore at 7:30pm with exciting features such as a
bouncy castle for children, music from top D.J Glen Kirby and talented local artist Lee Stewart. The popular Chilli Dogs band will entertain the crowd up until midnight when a spectacular fireworks display, masterminded by local fireworks guru Kelvin Holdaway kicks off. Continued Page 3.

deep water fishiNg shows positive results The deep water fishing industry has come through tough conditions and ended the year on a positive note. Annual results of Sealord Group Limited holding company Kura reported revenue at $573.3 million, up from $530.8m for the previous year. Tough conditions of reduced quotas, increased fuel costs and a strengthening dollar has caused challenges, but there is still a global demand for nutritious protein that New Zealand seafood delivers.

What do women want? A lighthearted rant from a male’s perspective Fellas, hands up if your other half has ever ended an argument with the word “fine”. Okay, now leave your hand up if you tried to continue the fight. All right, you blokes in the neck braces had better listen real close. The word “fine”, when used by a woman involved in a disagreement, is not an indication that everything is good. Nor is it an invitation to continue with the debate. “Fine” actually means “if you don’t stop talking now there will be physical violence” – end of argument. Are you getting the hang of it? Try this one – “Nothing”.
Any experienced man will tell you this means “something” and is the calm before the storm. Be on your toes because arguments that begin with “nothing” usually end in “fine”. In a similar vein, “go ahead” should not be seen as permission to do something. It is actually a dare. Whatever it is, don’t do it! Also, don’t be confused by use of the word “thanks”. While this may be a woman thanking you (in which case just say “you’re welcome” and run away), it should not be confused with “thanks a lot”, which is actually pure sarcasm. Responding with “you’re wel-

come” will bring on a “whatever” which is a very dangerous place for you to be. Just as dangerous is “don’t worry about it, I got it”, which usually means a woman has told you to do something several times but is now doing it herself. This will often result in a man asking “what’s wrong?” to which the response is usually “nothing”, which inevitably leads to an argument ending in “fine”. There you go. If you’re smart, you’ll cut this column out and put it somewhere for easy reference. Not on the fridge, you idiot! She’ll find it there, for sure!
Blenheim behind on 128 hours of sunshine Blenheim might be trailing behind Nelson and Whakatane in sunshine hours, but the year is not over yet. Statistics provided by NIWA current up to December 19 show Nelson sitting at the top of the table with 2389 sunshine hours, Whakatane on 2304 and Blenheim at third with 2261. According to a NIWA’s Dr James Renwick, Blenheim has had a “relatively dull year to date”, about 93percent of normal for the year to date. “Looking at the MetService web site, they are expecting essentially fine weather in Marlborough through to December 29 then rain on the 30th,” Mr Renwick says.

Marlborough blue cod fishery opening Molesworth Station road opening for summer
Road to history marks 25th anniversary When the road through Molesworth Station opens on December 28 it will mark the 25th anniversary of the road through the Marlborough high country station being opened to the public in summer. This season will celebrate the popularity of what is New Zealand’s biggest farm and Acheron Road which has seen around 85,000 people in more than 40,000 vehicles travelling through in the summer opening period since it was first opened in 1987-88. The Acheron Road through the 180,787 hectare station was first opened to the public in the summer of 1987-88 for six
weeks. The open period for the road has since increased and this summer it will be open for more than 14 weeks, up until 7pm on Easter Monday, April 9 (road and fire risk conditions permitting). The Department of Conservation managed the opening of the road through the Crown-owned station and in July, 2005 Molesworth Station became a recreation reserve under DOC administration, with Landcorp Farming Limited continuing to run its cattle farm. The Acheron Road goes through a vast awe-inspiring landscape of towering moun-
tains and river valleys. The station is steeped in history, in its farming evolution and as a Maori and early European travel route. The journey takes in two historic cob buildings, the Acheron Accommodation House and the Molesworth Cob Cottage. Anyone planning to travel the road should first check the road is open as it can close at short notice due to weatherrelated conditions. Calls can be made to the DOC South Marlborough Area Office, ph (03) 572 9100 or people can ask at visitor centres in the region.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is calling on recreational fishers to follow the rules when they go fishing for blue cod in Marlborough this summer. Field Operations Manager Ian Bright said Fishery Officers would be out and about making sure recreational fishers follow the new rules that were introduced earlier this year. “The season in the Marlborough Sounds Area (MSA) opened yesterday and runs until the end of August next year,” Mr Bright says. “It’s very important for the future of this iconic fishery that fishers know the rules and apply them. Fishery Officers and Honorary Fishery Officers are willing and able to help them do that.” The key rules for the MSA are: • No fisher may possess more than two blue cod, between 30 and 35 centimetres in length • A two-hook per line limit • A requirement that blue cod must remain in a whole or gutted state at all times while on the water • No fishing at all around Maud Island. Fishers staying in baches and aboard boats were not ex-
empt from these rules. “They may land or transport by sea only two whole or gutted blue cod of between 30 and 35 centimetres on any day,” Mr Bright says. “They don’t want to write tickets but will if they have to. Fines of $250 to $500 per offence can be imposed on fishers who ignore the rules. Serious breaches can result in confiscation of gear, boats and vehicles.” Mr Bright went on to add; “Scallops must be landed in the shell, and cannot be shucked or shelled seaward of the high water mark.” “This includes transporting on the water from a permanent or temporary place of residence. “The exception is that scallops may be opened at sea for consumption on a boat. Scallops that are eaten at sea form part of the fisher’s daily limit. Any scallops landed must be in the shell.” Anyone seeing suspicious activity in Marlborough or anywhere else should call 0800 4 POACHER (0800 476 224).
King granted retrial Kevin King was granted a retrial last Tuesday after being convicted of manslaughter of 24-year-old Matthew Heagney in February 2011. Mr King was sentenced in February to 12 months home detention but while
awaiting the appeal decision, has not served the sentence. It was reported that the Appeal Court judges felt the jury had not been unanimous in agreeing on the sequence of events which caused Mr Heagney’s death.
Summer music festivals Smokefreerockquest’s role as an incubator for Kiwi music is evident in the summer music festivals, with this year’s award winners lined up to play across the country from Parachute to the Kaikoura Roots Festival. The 2011 national winners, The Peasants,a seven piece Nelson indie-pop band whose singer Georgia Nott stunned the judges with her ‘powerful, emotional and dynamic’ voice, will welcome the New
Year at Nelson’s Trafalgar Square Countdown. They then have a slot at the Kaikoura Roots Festival on January 14, alongside such established names as Salmonella Dub and Kora. Back on their home turf they are booked for the Brightwater Food and Wine Festival on January 29 alongside hometown girl Sharon O’Neill and Aussie rocker Glenn Shorrock, founder of the Little River Band.

Sanctuary opening only a year away Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk It has been five years in the making but thanks to the tireless work of volunteers and the many generous grants received to date, the Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary could be open to the public this time next year. The Sun spoke with Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society Chairman Alan Izard to highlight the progress to date and talk about the ongoing work which will be carried out in 2012. The 40 hectare native sanctuary located between Shakespeare Bay and Picton Harbour was initiated in 2006 and is part crown reserve administered by the Department of Conservation and part private land owned by Port Marlborough New Zealand Ltd, foundation partners in the project. In order to isolate Kaipupu Point from the mainland and keep pests out, a predator proof fence was built in 2008. Soon after, plans were drawn up for a jetty to be built on the western side of the point for public access. Grants have been provided for the construction of the jetty and currently volunteers are working on the landing area, which to date has taken around 400 volunteer hours. Once this is completed the pontoon complex will be installed, Mr Izard says. “We are definitely on track to open to the public by Christmas 2012 which is particularly exciting for those involved. “There is a lot to go but there’s nothing that can’t be done,” he says. The next step is to complete surveying positions for the walking tracks around the sanctuary. Sponsorship is still being sought for this stage of the project as the Society still needs around $40,000 to complete tracks and signage. “This provides a unique opportunity for a major

Another exciting event for the Society is the Trust Power National Community Awards which will be held in Ashburton in March. The Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society was named Supreme Winner at the 2011 TrustPower Marlborough Community Awards, which were announced and presented on October 26, which enables the Society to put forward a presentation at the national awards. “We are confident we will do well and are looking forward to the awards,” he says. Dear Ed, I walked through a Blenheim department store last Wednesday and could not believe the lack of customer service, lack of friendliness that one would expect from retail staff and lack of willingness to greet customers. As I stood at a perfume stand looking through samples I heard a long sigh from behind me. I turned around and it was a sales rep who was obviously frustrated by my

I carried on to another department where I took some items to a counter to pay and stood for exactly 14 seconds before the staff member even looked up at me. Dear Ed, In response to the letter written by S Chaffey in December 8. I agree with you whole heartedly, that Renwick School is one of the finest in Marlborough. But on the other hand I am not ready to jump in and say “let’s give the hall to the school”. My husband and I researched every school in Marlborough to find the best for our three children. We decided to move to Renwick two years ago specifically for the school, so I am not for one minute speaking against it, but at the same time I can understand the concern with giving away a ‘community asset’. From what I have read and have discussed with many of my Renwick friends, I firmly believe that the school has sufficient use of the hall and that the only reason it would benefit to have the ownership, would be for funding purposes. But is that enough reason to want the hall? Mum of Three

Dear Ed, Thank you Sun Newspaper and thank you Marlborough community for bringing some cheer into my home. My three children have all moved to Australia now and will not be returning home for Christmas so I have been a little down in the dumps lately and not looking forward to Christmas.
But reading all the lovely stories about the community and the many good things people are doing for one another makes me happy, so this Christmas I think I will treat myself to an extra slice of Christmas cake, a nip of brandy and read all about Marlborough in the Sun Newspaper. Swimming pool safety and fencing is the responsibility of every pool owner. Not only are complying fences required around all pools, it is very important that the fence be maintained regularly so that its safety can be assured. Check the gates are self-closing and that the latches are self-locking. This is the most common area of non-compliance seen by Council. Make sure that no pot plants, trees, hedges, timber stacks, outdoor furniture, toys or anything else that a child can stand on are anywhere near the fence. A child has drowned in New Zealand by dragging a small trike up to the fence and using it to access a pool. Don’t let that happen in your pool. Spa pools can be just as dangerous as larger pools and must meet the same fencing requirements. If you have an exemption from the fencing requirements and have a lockable cover in its place then it must be locked at all times the spa is not under supervision. Two minutes inattention can result in a drowning. A drowning in a private swimming pool is a tragic and distressing occurrence but drowning is preventable. It is every pool owner’s duty to keep their pool safe at all times. The Marlborough District Council has information that explains the pool fencing requirements and can be obtained from the Customer Service Centre at Blenheim and Picton. A brochure explaining the pool fencing requirements is also on the Council web pages.

Playhouse is delivered in time for xmas At the end of October the Mitre 10 Mega Marlborough team began building a playhouse to be raffled as part of a nationwide Plunket competition. The playhouse was designed by the team and built by local Mike Newport or Newport Building and Renovations. Raffle tickets were sold instore and the winner was the Large family from Wairau Valley. All proceeds from the raffle went to Plunket.
Above; Arthur Deans (left) manager of Deans Lifting Services and John Valk (Spinner) were happy to deliver The Mega Mitre10/Plunket playhouse to the Large family in the Wairau Valley at no cost and just in time for Christmas. Right; Gentle as she goes, the playhouse is lowered onto the Deans Lifting Services truck at Mitre 10 Mega.
Be safe in the water this summer
Last summer, ten New Zealanders drowned between 4pm Christmas Eve and 6am January 5th. In a year that has already seen 117 Kiwis lose their lives to drowning (30 more than last year’s total figure), Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) is calling for caution and reminding holidaymakers about the basic water safety precautions. WSNZ’s chief executive Matt Claridge says the drowning toll for the year to date is unacceptably high. “Our drowning death toll has been in decline over the past two decades, but - tragically – this year the trend has reversed.” “Many deaths can be avoided if people behave responsibly and remember the safety basics. With thousands of New Zealanders flocking to beaches, lakes and rivers during the holiday period, we’re asking people to use their common sense and make safety the first priority when in and around the water.” Historical trends suggest that it will be boaties, divers, fisherman and swimmers who are most likely to feature in drowning incidents through the holiday period. “Wear life jackets, check the weather forecast, stay within your limits, don’t swim alone and avoid alcohol. It’s not rocket science but it could save your life,” Mr Claridge says. Children are particularly vulnerable, and of last year’s ten Christmas/New Year period deaths two were children aged under five. This year there have been 14 preschoolers drown in New Zealand, he says. “We’re hoping New Zealanders will remember the safety basics and have a lot of fun in the water this summer. No more unnecessary tragedies please.”

Protect hearing on New Years Eve More and more children are suffering from hearing problems, with noise a major reason. With New Year celebrations about to begin, parents should take notice of what is going on around them and take steps to protect their children’s hearing. Fireworks are an exciting feature of New Years celebrations but for children, particularly infants it is important to protect their hearing. Remember to sit a distance away from the fireworks, and encourage your children to wear hearing protection devices such as ear plugs. Good hearing is essential for children to communicate with their peers and develop social skills, so enjoy your New Year celebrations in a safe way and responsible way.

Don’t let food poisoning spoil your holidays It is barbeque season, a time for friends and family to come together in the outdoors to enjoy the classic kiwi burger and sausage in bread. But with BBQ’s comes the threat of food poisoning. Food poisoning is usually mild and in most cases people recover within a week, but sometimes it can be more severe – even fatal. Risks include undercooked meat, food left sitting in the sun and spreading germs from raw meat onto food that’s ready to eat. Raw or undercooked
meat can contain germs that cause food poisoning, such as salmonella, E.coli and campylobacter. However, these germs can be killed by cooking meat until it is piping hot throughout. Here are some easy to follow tips to ensure your meat is cooked properly on the BBQ: • Make sure the coals are glowing red with a powdery grey surface before you start cooking, as this means that they’re hot enough. • Ensure frozen meat is properly thawed before you cook it.
• You must turn the meat regularly and move it around the barbecue to cook it evenly. Some meat, such as steaks and joints of beef or lamb, can be served rare (not cooked in the middle) as long as the outside has been properly cooked. This will kill any bacteria that might be on the outside of the meat. However, food made from minced meat, such as sausages and burgers must be cooked thoroughly all the way through. Happy holidays and remember – cook, cover and refridgerate!
Be sun smart! Skin can burn in as little as 15 minutes in the sun, so this summer protect your family by following this simple message – Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap. Slip on sun protective clothing, slop on some SPF 30+ sunscreen, slap on a hat and wrap on a pair of sunglasses. Australia and New Zealand have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, so don’t let this be you.

Christmas spirit

Dear Ed, I am writing in regards to the Christmas tree feedback printed on 21st Dec. Firstly I was disappointed in the Sun when they limited the feedback from adults only, who are quite frankly, always to busy! Christmas is for the children, maybe you should have been asking the kids of Blenheim what their opinions were. It’s a matter of keeping their christmas spirits up while being dragged around town with their

highly stressed out parents. I miss showing my kids the huge tree and getting the response “there must be really big presents under that tree at christmas mum”. Secondly, to all those involved (Marlborough lines): This is a once a year celebration, and you say you can’t afford it, who is responsible for your budgeting? Maybe you should employ a housewife to do your budgeting, as we budget all year round and still have good christmases. Bec, Canvastown.

Cycling for change By Annabelle Latz The best way to observe climate change is to be outdoors. So for the last seven years, that is exactly what Stani Martinkova and Richard Fergé have done, on their pushbikes. They rolled into Blenheim on December 20, spent four days looking at bio-dynamic and organic wineries, and then set off to Hanmer via the Molesworth Station road. On December 28 2004, they set off from Richard’s home town in France, Challerault in the Loire Valley, and took off across the world. Stani is from England, they met in a nightclub in London in 1996. Stani met a version of Richard that had no interest in biking, but as a wine sommelier, had a passion for wine. Stani worked for a charity organization in London, promoting sustainability in small villages in Central Africa. . She convinced Richard to swap the taxi rides for a bike, and spend the unused taxi fare money on wine instead. He agreed, and it was the catalyst for their future. For this trip they sold their house in London and quit their jobs. With just the essentials for a self sustained life, they set off to spread the word and awareness of climate change around the globe. “It seems everywhere we have been, people say ‘this is not normal weather’, we feel there is definite proof of climate change,” said Stani, reflecting on experiences the floods they experienced recently in New Zealand. She said societies and governments need to work together in a number of areas, from simple things like encouraging no litter dropping and taking reusable bags to the supermarket, to making public transport an attractive option

and investing in sustainable farming. The pair has loved their time in Blenheim, their hearts bounced when they clapped eyes on the surrounding bronzed hills and blue sky. They will spend a total of six months in New Zealand, and the message for kiwis is a simple one; “You have a beautiful country, and keep it that way,” said Stani. Although there are days when they miss small comforts like fluffy slippers and com-

fortable beds, Stani said they plan to be on the road for at least another four years, working here and there when need be. But in the meantime, they wouldn’t swap their lifestyle choice, and laugh fondly when describing funny incidents like cheeky keas stealing their underwear as they have their morning wash. “We’ve never had the inclination to stop and go home, nothing is set in stone,” said Stani.
